Guests who travel to this State of Michigan historic landmark can dine inside one of the cozy dining rooms next to a giant fireplace or outdoors among the lush floral gardens with panoramic views of Lake Michigan, spectacular sunsets and up to four different lighthouses. And kids are free to roam and play among the vast backyard gardens, explore the different rooms throughout the Inn or play in the arcade after they’ve finished their Kids Menu entrée selections. Built in the 1920s by Polish immigrant Stanley Smolak, Legs Inn is known as a “monument to nature” and has become one of the top destinations in Northern Michigan. Smolak wanted to capture a sense of history and an appreciation of nature in the elements Historic LEGS INN of Cross Village is widely known for Dining Destination in Historic Cross Village throughout the building. The façade of this architectural marvel is made entirely of local fieldstone and the roof line is adorned with an inverted row of cast iron stove legs, hence the famous name. The interior is filled with hand carved furniture and features two sets of massive doors crafted from giant pine knots that have been painstakingly pieced together. Every turn inside the building reveals hidden surprises and bizarre creations. Legs Inn is a testament to the Old World craftsmanship and Native American influence, as exemplified by the building’s handmade furniture and decorative wood carvings, which includes numerous totem poles and driftwood sculptures. Varied game, wildlife and stuffed animals throughout the interior also add to the unique décor. Legs Inn has received a great deal of recognition from various media and a great deal of praise from its guests throughout the years. Coastal Living magazine named Legs Inn a “Bonus Find” in its "Top Ten Staff Favorites" piece, with the author noting, "As a native Michiganian and lover of Polish cuisine, I salivate at the thought of Legs Inn." Also voted "Best Family Restaurant" and one of the “Top 10 Local Hot Spots” in the state, Legs Inn attracts guests from all over the USA Celebration July 11-12 July 11-13 34th Annual BlissFest July 1-7 www.petoskey.com/places-of-worship-4/. Local readers of The Graphic have given Legs Inn an unprecedented sweep in the “Best of the Northwest” poll, naming it “Best Family Restaurant,” “Best All-Around Menu,” “Best Outdoor Dining” with the “Best Local Band.” Travelocity.com, the popular online travel site with millions of registered users, has even selected Legs Inn one of the top 10 Michigan “Local Secrets/ Big Finds.” It also consistently receives top rankings, traveler's choice and "Best Of" awards from TripAdvisor.com, Yelp, Facebook, Google, among many others. Legs Inn has even been featured in The New York Times, USA Today, Chicago Tribune, United Hemispheres magazine - and even on the PBS program "Under The Radar: Michigan.” The menu offerings at Legs Inn are as unique as the décor, with the specialty being truly authentic Polish cuisine. The most popular choice is the “Taste of Poland,” consisting of Golabki (stuffed cabbage rolls), Pierogi (dumplings) and Kielbasa with authentic homemade sauerkraut. Other popular entrees include Bigos (Polish Hunter’s Stew), the Legs Inn Kotlet, Goulash, and a wide variety of delicious Vegetarian dishes. Traditional American dishes, such as the famous Broiled Whitefish and various Chicken specialties are also served. And the mouthwatering Old World Szarlotka (Polish Crumb Cake Dessert) is an absolute favorite. The tavern at Legs Inn, with its enormous bar sculpted from a single massive hemlock trunk, offers more than 100 varieties of local, craft and imported beer, as well as numerous fine wine selection, cocktails and an extensive imported Polish Vodka menu, which is among the world’s finest. During the summer months of July and August, guests enjoy live music and dancing at Legs Inn. Also, the Gift Shop offers a variety of unique items, including handmade Native American crafts and imported Polish specialties, including handpainted wooden eggs, jewelry boxes and beautiful amber jewelry. Stanley Smolak’s nephew, George, and his wife Kathy, along with sons Mark and Christopher, operate the beautifully restored Legs Inn, which is recognized as a State of Michigan Historic Site.
