The Certificate in Gerontology Program Gerontology is the study of the process of aging and the aged. In an effort to help meet the need for professionally trained gerontologists, primarily to serve the minority elderly in the State of Mississippi, the Department of Sociology offers a Certificate in Gerontology. The Major in Sociology with Concentration in Social Work Students who choose to major in Sociology with a concentration in Social Work are required to take a minimum of thirty semester hours in Sociology, in addition to 18 hours in the Social Work field.
