Introduction

Welcome to Your November Issue. Inside Highlights

A particular highlight this month is the Schools Art Competition results, which took place as part of September’s Whittlesey Festival, on page 24. The efforts of our local school pupils were impressive to say the least, and judges and visitors alike were blown away by the talent on display. We’ve also got a detailed report on the Festival itself on page 75; we’d like to apologise for the mistake made with last month’s article, which was entirely due to our own error and was in no way the fault of the Festival Committee.

In other news, I’m sure many of you will have been saddened to see that Wright’s, in Market Street, will be closing in the coming weeks. I recently spent an enjoyable morning talking to owners David and Shirley in the shop, hearing about their tough decision to close and their memories of the business’s six decades of trading. You can read all about it on page 14.

Your November issue is packed with even more news and information from the local community, including extra-large Charity and Club news sections. Our numerous regular contributors have been working hard to bring you an ever-varied range of interesting and useful articles to keep you occupied as those dark nights draw in. We’ve got Bonfire Night to look forward to this month, and I’m sure many of you are looking forward to seeing some dazzling firework displays in the local area. If you’re planning your own fireworks do make sure you know what you’re doing, as the ones I had last year went off totally out of sequence… it was bang out of order! With that terrible pun, I’ll leave you to enjoy the read!

Eat the Season

Jacket Potatoes

The Perfect Bonfire Night Supper Cook the perfect jacket potato and finish with the topping of your choice, as suggested by our readers and the Discovering Magazines team.

Method 1 2 3 4 5

Preheat the oven to 200˚C/Gas Mark 6. Rub oil, sea salt and black pepper into the potato skin. With a sharp knife cut a deep cross into the top of the potato. Place directly onto oven shelf – cut side up. Bake for between 1 hour and 1 hour and 15 minutes. The potato is ready when the skin is crispy and the potato is soft in the middle.

Toppings Barwell Accountants: Is it possible to beat crispy skin, fluffy middle, butter and mature cheddar? : ) Jaqui Fairfax: I love a plain jacket potato with an unhealthy wedge of butter, but if I have a topping it is always tuna and sweetcorn in lashings of mayonnaise. Cheryl Jakes: Prawn mayo Jayne Whytock: Mine is left over mince with carrots, onions in thick gravy or casserole. Scoop out some of the potato, replace with the mince or casserole, replace the potato, then add lots of butter salt and pepper – yum yum.

Claire Saberton: Prawns in Marie-rose sauce and cheese yummmmmmyy! Sarah Gumbley: Got to be baked beans and cheese for me! Or cheese and salad cream... Jack Harris: I'm afraid it's not very interesting, but I just like cheese! Emma Gunner: Cheese and coleslaw for me! Catherine Healy: Decisions, decisions!!! Chilli or tuna & cheese. Andy Armstrong: Has to be either chilli or chicken tikka for me. John Schwarz: It's got to be baked beans, with grated cheese, then slices of Chorizo.

Eat the Season

Root Vegetable Soup In gredie nt s

Something happens to vegetables when they're cooked very slowly for a long time - their flavour becomes mellow but at the same time more intense, and your kitchen is filled with aromas of goodness. This is completely fat free & serves 6.

Method You will need a lidded flameproof casserole with a capacity of 6 pints (3.5 litres). Pre-heat the oven to gas mark 275F (140ËšC)

8oz (225g) pee led ca rro cut int o 2 inch (5c m) len ts, gth s 8oz (225g) pee led celeri ac, cut int o 2 inch (5c m) pie ces 8oz (225g) tri mm ed an d ha lved an d cut int o 2 inc wa shed lee ks, h (5c m) len gth s 8oz (225g) pee led swed cut int o 2 inch (5 cm) pie e, ces 1 sm all on ion, pee led an d rou ghly ch opped 2. 5 pints (1.5 litres) sto M arigo ld Swiss Bouillon ck ma de wit h veg eta ble powde r 3 ba y lea ves Sa lt an d fre shly milled bla ck pepper 6 tea spoon s fat-free Gr ee k yog hu A few fre sh chives, sni ppe rt d

There’s not much to do here once everything is peeled and chopped. All you do is place everything in the casserole and bring it up to a gentle simmer, then put the lid on, place it in the lowest part of the oven and leave it there for 3 hours, by which time the vegetables will be meltingly tender. Next remove the bay leaves and process or liquidise the soup in several batches to a purÊe, then gently re-heat, and serve the soup in bowls with a teaspoon of Greek yoghurt swirled into each and garnished with the fresh chive.

A Fond Farewell to Wright’s

Whittlesey’s high street will bid farewell to a familiar face in the coming weeks, as Wright’s of Whittlesey prepares to close its doors after six decades of trading.

I

t’s a bittersweet experience for owners David and Shirley, who have devoted most of their lives to running the shop in Market Street. David was just ten years old when his father, Herbert Cecil Wright, took over the business from Mackrell’s in 1955; he recalls that his mother was somewhat uncertain about the prospect of moving to Whittlesey from Peterborough!

Top: Shirley and David in the shop. Above: The shop in 1970, showing the toy shop before the upstairs was added.

David has been involved with the business since he was about eighteen, and he and wife Shirley have run the shop since David’s father passed away in 1978. “I first came to Wright’s as temporary Christmas staff in 1975,” says Shirley, “and I never left!” As you might expect over a period of sixty two years, the shop has seen numerous changes during its time. “At one time we had a toy showroom across the street in the building now occupied by

Boome,” explains David, “and until the mid-70s we were also in partnership with the bicycle shop on the corner of Falcon Lane. We extended the toy shop in the main building in 1981, adding the upstairs and rear to the end unit that’s now occupied by Sharman Quinney.” “It was around that time Queensgate was built, and we decided to close the ladies’ and children’s wear sections,” adds Shirley. As well as running the shop, David and Shirley have been active figures in the local community for many years. It was Shirley’s dedication to the Christmas Extravaganza Committee, Friends of St. Mary’s and Whittlesey Business Forum that saw her receive the Whittlesey Citizen of the Year award in 2006, and David too has played an active part in groups such as the Round Table, Rotary Club and Business Forum. “Being a small family business, we’ve always felt it’s important to give something back to the community that has served us so well,” says Shirley. So why the decision to close? “Although we’ll be very sad to go, retirement beckons,” Shirley explains. The couple began their closing down sale a few weeks ago, and while they’ve yet to decide their final closing date, it’ll most likely be before the end of the year.

NOVE MB E R 2017

“We’ve got mixed emotions about closing the shop. What we’ll both miss hugely are the chats with customers, many of whom we’ve known for years, and of course the countless people who have worked with us in the shop over that time.” “It’ll be hard to say goodbye, but we’re looking forward to a well-earned rest!”

Interesting articles to help you understand your body better

Little Scientists When a baby looks at you with a look of astonishment, what are they thinking? When they drop their fork on the floor, what are they doing? We now know the answer – they’re experimenting! Babies are experimenting from the very moment they are born. Their experiments take on the same logical format as any experiment performed by a scientist. They ask a question, research, construct a hypothesis, test the hypothesis and draw conclusions from it, before finally they reconstruct or consolidate their hypothesis. The difference is that our babies’ questions are far simpler than our molecular biologists’! They enter this world with little knowledge of how it the people in it work. In fact, their understanding of the world is similar to your understanding of Gliese 667Cc (a NASA-identified potential habitable planet, twenty light years away!). But what they do have is a set of genes that provides them with the tools and desire to learn, and a group of guardians to teach them. They observe their guardians interacting with the world and develop a set of rules based on what they see. They then test and retest these rules through little experiments, analysing the results as they go. This builds up a bank of data which either agrees or disagrees with their set of rules. If it agrees with the baby’s idea of what should happen, they generally look happy with themselves (just as we would), but if it goes against their hypothesis then they look understandably baffled. As an interesting side note, this is why magic shows appeal to both adults and children; because they defy what we believe to be true. Based on the data, babies modify their set of rules and then ask themselves another question, thus beginning the process again.

Let’s run through a basic example. A baby moves its hands over its eyes and the world disappears! Where did it go? The hypothesis is that the world has disappeared, and the question is ‘how did that happen’? The baby now tries to answer this question with a series of tests. Test one: shake my head and maybe the world will come back. Test two: wiggle my legs. Test three: move my hands. Test four: open and close my eyes. With each test there is an outcome, which the baby records before repeating each test multiple times to ensure the outcomes are reproducible. The baby then analyses its findings and draws its conclusion: the world disappeared behind my hands and eyelids. It then modifies the original hypothesis, having established that the world cannot disappear, but it can be hidden by hands and eyes! Cue the next few days of peek-a-boo! This methodology ensures their understanding of the world is constantly evolving, and it is through experimentation (or ‘creating havoc’, as you might think of it!) that babies and children learn how the world works. They are inquisitive enough to experiment, accept the outcomes and ultimately are open to changing their mind-set... something we adults could learn from!

Local Mayor is Guest at Conservative Lunch James Palmer, Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, was special guest at a Conservative Association Sunday Lunch recently. The Whittlesey branch of North East Cambs Conservative Association hosted Mayor Palmer, who spoke and answered questions on many topical subjects including housing, transport and the future of local government. The lunch raised £480 towards Conservative funds, aided by fantastic donations of desserts and puddings made by the ladies of the branch. Chair of NECCA Julie Windle was delighted with the event, and grateful for the Mayor’s presence. She is pictured here (centre) with Mayor Palmer and Kay Mayor. Photo courtesy of RWT Photography

Football Fun for Whittlesey Pupils Pupils at Park Lane School have recently been in training for a very special day. Thursday mornings have heard the shrill of a whistle and the waving of flags, as the pupils have been learning about sportsmanship, respect, fair play and the role of the match official. The sessions have been supplied by FA Referee Tutor and Chairman of Peterborough Referees' Association Robert Windle, who applied for funds from the Burnt House Wind Farm Fund, with the aim of giving local schools a fun experience as well as top quality football equipment. The big day in November is on Thursday 16th, when Premier League referee Mike Jones will be visiting the school. His visit will give pupils the chance to meet one of England’s top referees, before he then goes to Sir Harry Smith Community College to be part of the primary schools festival. Councillor surgeries will be held in Grosvenor House from 9.30am to 10.30am on the first Saturday of every month throughout 2017. Councillors present on Saturday November 4th will be: Councillor Steve Garratt (District and Town Councillor) Councillor Rita Jolley (Town Councillor) If you have any matters of concern and wish to discuss them with a Councillor, then please come along and let us know.

NOVEMBER UPDATE - By Steve Barclay MP

I

recently had the pleasure of presenting awards with Whittlesey Councillor, Julie Windle, to children who had completed the Summer Reading Challenge at Whittlesey Library. The challenge involved reading six books during the school summer holiday. I hope that all of the children who took part this year enjoyed the challenge and continue to be inspired to read.

I welcome the announcement that the new Chair of the Fenland and East Cambridgeshire Opportunity Area Partnership board will be Tricia Pritchard. Tricia has had an extensive career in education, a former head teacher with experience working in OFSTED, and former Director of Education and Chief Executive for the Diocese of Ely Multi-Academy Trust. Since the Department of Education’s announcement, in January, that Fenland and East Cambridgeshire were going to be one of just twelve areas in the country to be designated as an ‘Opportunity Area’, department officials, stakeholder groups and the Partnership Board have been hard at work identifying where they wish to see the additional £6 million this has brought to the area. In addition to the £6 million funding, being a designated ‘Opportunity Area’ means our schools also have priority access to other Department of Education funding, which the Partnership Board are already looking to leverage. This is a gamechanging opportunity for education in our area and I look forward to sharing how the initiative progresses with constituents. Lastly, with the cold weather upon us, it is the season for catching nasties such as the flu!

Whilst this can produce mild illness in most people, flu can have severe consequences among vulnerable groups such as: • people 65 years and over; • pregnant women; • people with long-term medical conditions; • people living in a long-stay residential care; • and carers of the elderly or disabled. If you fall within any of these categories, the injected flu vaccine is available free of charge on the NHS. Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself, and loved ones, from flu and stay well during the winter period. Don’t put it off; you can get this done for free at your local pharmacists, so you don’t even need to book an appointment with your GP. To find out the nearest flu vaccination service to you, simply insert your postcode into the finder at www.nhs.uk/staywell.

Matters A WORD from...

Your Mayor Cllr. Ralph Butcher

Ralph Butch er

Since last month’s article I have unfortunately had a slight heart problem (dicky ticker), so I have been a little under the weather. However, thanks to help from fellow Councillors, Sue the Town Clerk and my family, I have been able to carry on with my role as Mayor. On Sunday October 8th we held the annual Civic Service at St. Mary’s Church, which was well attended by civic leaders and dignitaries, family, friends and local people. I was also very pleased that the Bishop of Ely took part in the service. My thanks to everyone else who took part in arranging the service, and a special thanks to Sue for all her hard work. There’s not long now before Christmas, the time of the year when we all spend much more than we should! It would be nice if we could use our local businesses as much as possible for our extra needs at this time of year. I am sure it would be very much appreciated, and of course it will help to keep our shops open and our town vibrant. Remember to visit the Whittlesey Extravaganza on Friday December 8th, when a lot of our shops will be open until late. Regards Councillor Ralph Butcher, Mayor of Whittlesey

Schools Showcase Artistic Talent at the Whittlesey Festival Children and students did themselves proud at this year’s Whittlesey Festival, as their artwork and crafts were viewed by hundreds of visitors, friends and family at the event on September 10th. The Schools Art Exhibition was on display in the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street, and featured work from all the local schools: New Road, Alderman Jacobs, Coates, Park Lane and Sir Harry Smith Community College. Marija Lysak, who organised the competition on behalf of the Festival, said: “It was great to have every local school taking part this year. Both the standard of work and the number of entries (which totalled nearly 150) surpassed our expectations. What a fantastic opportunity for others to see first-hand the creative talents of our local young people. On behalf of the Festival Committee, I would like to thank everyone who entered – they should be extremely proud of themselves, and we look forward to next year.” What did visitors have to say about the talent on display? “Wonderful talent from both the junior and senior categories. Such a variety - the best I’ve ever seen!” “Absolutely superb efforts. Some brilliant pieces of artwork from Whittlesey schools. Real artists in the making, and beautifully set out.” “Brilliant exhibition. It was lovely to see my daughter’s artwork on display.” One of the competition judges went on to say: “The standard of work was exceptional, and we had an extremely hard task choosing the winners.”

Home Interiors

A Real Fire - by Interior Designer, Yasmin Chopin Radiators, or underfloor heating systems, remove the need for additional appliances, yet it’s hard to beat the romance of a real fire. A popular request is the wood-burning stove - regardless of property style: modern, traditional, or in between. They look great, toast your toes, and even marshmallows, but is this significant investment worth it? If you take into account envious utterances from friends and relatives, you may think indeed it is. If you talk to an estate agent about putting your house on the market, you’ll get a tick in a box. A stove, or real flame fireplace, is certainly on most people’s wish list. One of my projects, an unusually large lounge, seven metres long and five wide, required some careful choices of colour, lighting, fabrics and furniture to make it feel homely. The client wanted a comfortable, warm atmosphere but, without a gas supply or chimney, (not even the chance of adding a chimney), there was no prospect of including a traditional style fireplace. To overcome the structural drawbacks – interior design is essentially concerned with solving problems – I specified a substantial and glamorous bioethanol fire. As an alternative to other forms of secondary heating, the bioethanol fire is still quite new, but they’re available at different price points, and range in their designs from contemporary to traditional. The big attraction is the real flame, and a bonus for the designer is that they can be freestanding and don’t require a flue. Consequently, you can put one anywhere in the room: wall, floor, even table-top. The one I included in this particular project, the ‘Cosmo’ produced by ‘Glammfire’, is the main focal point, and a conversation piece. Constructed from glass and sculptural corten steel, it’s a circular showstopper, ideal for a big room. Bioethanol burns with an orange flame, and the fuel is renewable, being produced from raw materials such as sugar

beet, potatoes and wheat. These decorative fires give off heat, just like a gas fire, but they don’t provide all round comfort like central heating does. So, if you just want a bit of cosy and a real flame then the bioethanol fire is an option. Image credits: Glammfire, distributed by Biolineofire

A Guide to Financing Your DIY Building Project

- by Andrew Carrier, Senior Commercial Solicitor We have probably all seen the TV show where people are building their dream house, frequently running into problems or running over budget. However, these are not the only issues you may encounter; you may find that securing finance for a self-build may not be so easy from a regular mortgage provider. If you are new to DIY building or thinking about getting into it for the first time, it’s useful to consult a specialist mortgage lender – even if you don’t go on to take up an offer of finance. There are a number of specialist lenders in the market and they can provide invaluable help in the early stages of a project. We can’t recommend any particular lender, but clients looking for a lender to help with a DIY house build may find it helpful to seek finance from a self-build specialist who will offer a mortgage that releases funds in stages. Some mortgage lenders will release funds to purchase the land with outline planning permission, and will then lend further funds for the cost of building, once detailed planning is in place. Apart from the usual information any lender will want, such as proof of identity and finance for any deposit, Fraser Dawbarns would recommend also having the following information ready at the start of the loan application process: • Planning permission • Initial Building Regulations approval • Architect’s drawings • Details of the build and the builder • Costings and a cash flow forecast NHBC or equivalent new home insurance The brief checklist summarised here is just the start of the mortgage process. If you decide to move on to the next stage, all lenders will expect a financial

commitment from you, possibly an arrangement fee and a valuation fee. The lender’s valuer will give the lender a list of further requirements and recommendations that will be invaluable to you as part of your own project checklist. Finally, every lender will have a checklist of legal requirements. Some lenders insist on a separate solicitor representing lender and borrower but others will use the same solicitor as you instruct. It is worth being aware that separate representation will mean double the legal bill, so it is important to check with your lender whether they will stipulate this requirement. Your solicitor can then help pull the project together, identify any legal constraints that may affect the development, and, ultimately, secure your mortgage funds. In summary, a specialist DIY house build mortgage lender will provide you with a wealth of information that can prove to be invaluable, and helpful, at the start of a potentially daunting project, and if you have been able to secure mortgage finance, then you must be doing something right!

Technology

Worried about Upgrading Your PC?

I have seen the concern of some people, and even real fear, of having to learn how to use a new and different operating system such as Windows 10 which puts people off upgrading their PC. I see this on an almost daily basis and would like to give you more of an understanding of what is involved. Firstly, if you are running Windows XP or Windows Vista your computer will be at increased risk of virus infection and of being hacked because since April 2014 Windows stopped support for Windows XP and as of April this year support will be withdrawn from Windows Vista – so you should seriously consider upgrading to Windows 7 or, better still, Windows 10. However, this can only be done if your PC/Laptop meets the Windows 7/10 hardware requirements. This may mean having your machine upgraded internally – we will be pleased to advise you on the best option to take. Windows 10 is the latest operating system for PCs and laptops and has already been around for nearly two years, and is really very easy to use because the changes, at face value are, merely

cosmetic – as everything is designed on the consumer’s love of previous versions of Windows. These cosmetic changes mean the ‘Start Menu’ has been updated to look cleaner and are designed to merge with the online services Microsoft offers such as the Windows store for the ‘Apps’. ‘Apps’ is just the new term for what we used to call ‘Programs’. They can be downloaded from the Windows Store in the form of games or random services and can be manually installed from a distributor’s website just like with previous operating systems. So when you click in the bottom left hand corner of your screen on the ‘Start Menu’ all you are really seeing is the same ‘Programs’ you used to see but just presented to you in a more user friendly and clean way. So, go ahead and try them. You may be pleasantly surprised by what you find. If you have any questions, do call in to the shop where we will be happy to answer them. Happy Computing! Len

Deeping Whittlesea

Give bogus callers the cold shoulder when they come knocking this winter WINTER is knocking at the door and, as the elements come calling, so too do the rogue traders! Gusty winds can attack fences and roof tiles, and heavy rain can play havoc with guttering and drains, as the seasons change. And, with unwanted jobs and the expense of fixing them, also come the unwanted cold callers. The effects of the elements, if and when they do their damage, are like magnets to the cowboy traders. Our advice is to never accept an offer of work from cold callers who ‘happen to be in your area’. They will ask for cash up-front, and more often than not, it will be for work which is totally unnecessary. Don’t be fooled by business cards with websites and telephone numbers which look genuine. Politely take the card – if you begin to feel vulnerable or intimidated - and say you will contact them at your convenience, should you need their services. You can then check their contact details, or ask a family member of friend to do so on your behalf. So, for all those winter maintenance jobs, www. safelocaltrades.com should be your first port of call. We have a range of professional, recommended and reliable trades from chimney sweeps, boiler maintenance engineers, electricians, roofing specialists, plumbers, tree surgeons – and just about anyone who can provide a service for your seasonal maintenance needs. However, there are some simple steps to “winterproof” your home and garden, and avoid a November nightmare or December disaster: Check all external pipes for breaks, leaks and blockages. They can freeze, expand and burst – causing potentially expensive water damage. Think about insulation. A properly insulated property is an absolute must. Make sure that you check the basics, starting with obvious draft points. Invest in some draft excluder to keep doors and windows secure. Check the cladding around your boiler and pipes, and make sure that taps and faucets don’t leak. Bleed your radiators. A great way to warm up your property is to bleed the radiators. This releases any trapped air, allowing hot water to fill every part of your radiator and warm the property more efficiently. Get a boiler service every year. Clear out your gutters, as autumn, leaves can lead to blockages and overflows. Investing in gutter leaf guards could help. Sweep your chimney every year to remove the build-up of dirt and grime from your chimney walls. For more information about the services we offer, visit www.safelocaltrades.com and find a reputable tradesperson in your area. N OV E M BE R 2 0 1 7

Church Matters

A Word from Reverend Nigel We used the two prayers below during our church services on October 1st, the first near the beginning and the second near to the end. The first encourages us to have the right attitude in our worship, while the second is a prayer sending us out into our communities for the week ahead. This prayer reminds us of the commandment Jesus gave to his followers: love God and love your neighbour as yourself. When we leave church after a service, we take with us this command and the desire to live our lives according to its teaching. Being a follower of Jesus is 24/7, not just on a Sunday morning. Please read them through, and if you wish offer them to God in prayer.

O Lord, we beseech you mercifully to hear the prayers of your people who call upon you; and grant that they may both perceive and know what things they ought to do, and also may have grace and power faithfully to fulfil them; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. (Collect prayer for sixteenth Sunday after Trinity Sunday)

Almighty God, you have taught us through your Son that love is the fulfilling of the law: grant that we may love you with our whole heart and our neighbours as ourselves; through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Post Communion for sixteenth Sunday after Trinity Sunday)

God bless you all Reverend Nigel

Whittlesey Christian Church

Food for Thought Someone recently asked: “don’t you think it’s a bit old fashioned to believe in, or read, the Bible?” How can a book be considered ‘old fashioned’ which has accurately foretold many of the things happening in our world today; along with highlighting the importance of embracing certain lifestyle choices which have such a positive effect on our wellbeing? Recently, society has begun to understand the benefits of these more fully. Let’s consider the aspect of happiness or joy for instance. Some four thousand years ago, the Bible recorded these amazing words: “a merry heart will do you good, just like a medicine” “the joy of the Lord will bring you strength” • Laughter relaxes the whole body. A hearty laugh relieves physical tension and stress, and relaxes your muscles for up to 45 minutes after. • Laughter boosts the immune system, decreases stress hormones, and increases immune cells,

improving your resistance to disease. The body’s natural feel-good chemicals increase and trigger the release of endorphins, which promote an overall sense of well-being and can even temporarily relieve pain.

• Laughter protects the heart. It’s a priceless, fun and free medicine which everyone can afford and is harmless to use. Despite entertainment and leisure being a multi-million pound business, unhappiness, boredom and stress are major problems to all ages. In many instances, this has contributed to the constant rise in suicide. I didn’t associate having fun and being happy with church or a Christian lifestyle until my late teens, when I was invited to a church very similar to ours. Yes, it was different to what I expected, but it set me on a journey which turned upside down my concept of God and church. Let’s help you get rid of stress and put some joy back into your life. See you Sunday at 10.45.

Local History

‘Lost Rivers’ of Whittlesey (Part One) - by David Hancock, Trustee of Whittlesey Museum

Were there ever small rivers or streams flowing through Whittlesey? There is scant evidence for them, but a few clues can be found of their possible existence. Let’s start with a few facts.

There is evidence of a waterway that possibly ran behind High Causeway towards the Market Place.

Evidence of a possible river in the form of alluvial deposits were found when the foundations were dug for the redevelopment of the former site of the Angel Hotel, in Eastgate. An old culvert was unearthed on this site, which may have carried a waterway from fisheries or an eel pond situated behind Boots the Chemist in High Causeway. The river’s course may have continued across the Market Place, along the western boundary of St. Mary’s churchyard, before turning sharp right to join an existing drain which may be the remnants of the river. A second opinion is that it flowed, again from the rear of Boots, across Eastgate and the northern end of the Station Road car park, to join the existing dyke to the left of the Manor House. If this waterway did exist, it could be Saxon or early Norman and is thought to have been approximately sixteen feet wide. The name High Causeway may give a clue to any waterway that existed in the area. Was a causeway indeed built to cross a wet or marshy area? Unless an excavation or a geophysical survey is conducted we may never know, and in view of the density of buildings along High Causeway it is doubtful if this will happen any time soon. A pond is also said to have existed on the Market Place, situated near the entrance to Church Lane which connects the Market Place to St. Mary’s churchyard. Whilst on the subject of ponds, Eastrea was once blessed with its own (situated near the entrance to Springfields), and no doubt Coates too boasted one. A now extinct natural river, which flowed south of Whittlesey, may have been used in the late Roman era for the transport of goods and perhaps people. It was abandoned during the medieval period

when the Briggate River was cut or recut to bring trade nearer to the town. It has been suggested on more than one occasion that Briggate dates back further than the medieval period. Pets’ Corner

Neutering - by Whittlesey Veterinary Centre

There are many opinions regarding the neutering of animals. Some say that pets should have one season before they are neutered, while some think that they should have a litter prior to neutering. Others think pets should be neutered as soon as possible, whereas other people say that it shouldn't be carried out at all due to 'ethical' reasons. Leaving aside the ethics debate, there are data sheets available outlining the benefits of neutering. These range from a reduction in the incidence of mammary tumours and male reproductive system cancers, to almost totally eliminating the occurrence of some conditions. There are other more obvious external benefits too, such as females not coming into season, and males generally not being so attracted to females or having the urge to wander. Bitches usually come into season twice per year, but queens (un-spayed female cats) can come into season at any time. Queens are what are known as ‘induced ovulators’, which means that they ovulate when they are mated by a tom. Therefore it is impossible to predict when they can fall pregnant. An un-neutered dog can just be kept close and on a lead when on walks for the time that they are in season - but this is not possible for a cat.

54

D I S C O V E R I N G

Whittlesea

You may be thinking: “well... what’s the problem? It’s entirely natural for animals to procreate!” Yes, of course it is – but who is thinking about all of the animals running around the streets producing puppies and kittens? What about the unwanted pets who find themselves in rescue centres when people suddenly realise how much they cost to look after, and the cost of medical treatment if they are ill?

Neutering has its pros and cons, but from a veterinary perspective there are more pros that make neutering better for your pet’s health. If you would like to discuss neutering, please talk to one of our nurses at the practice.

School News

Grandparents Come Back to School! Once again the classrooms at Alderman Jacobs School were filled with visitors as over one hundred grandparents took time to join their grandchildren for part of the morning, celebrating National Grandparent Weekend.

Reception Class Open Morning at New Road School Prospective primary school parents are invited to see what New Road School has to offer at an open morning this month. The school is holding a reception class open morning on November 15th, from 9.30am to 10.30am, where pre-school children and their parents will have the chance to see the reception class in action. You’ll also have the opportunity to meet members of the school staff in an informal and friendly setting, prior to your child starting school in September 2018.

Walking around school, it was a pleasure to see so many visitors actively involved in learning opportunities. Some were able to share exciting texts with each other whilst others were engrossed in culinary masterpieces. Each class welcomed their visitors on the playground and brought them into school for registration. Having spent time in the classrooms, the visitors were then offered a refreshing drink before making their way home. This has proved to be one of our most popular open events and we welcome both new and familiar faces each year.

“We believe the most important thing about our school is the people in it. If your child is starting school next year, why not come along and see for yourself what we have to offer?” Staff and parents had been busy baking, and there was a wonderful array of cakes and biscuits that Mary Berry would have been proud of! Parents were challenged to guess ‘how high is the cake?’, as well as chat over a refreshing cup of tea or coffee and enjoy a slice of cake. Lorraine Quince, IT Support/Communications at the school, said: “Our annual sponsored walk always creates a real buzz among the staff, pupils and families. We are very lucky to be supported by so many families who turn up on the day to walk with their children and cheer them on.”

Best Foot Forward Park Lane Primary and Nursery School recently welcomed parents and friends into school on a Friday afternoon to raise money as part of Macmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’, whilst the children took part in our annual sponsored walk. 58

The sound system was set up outside to give the afternoon a party atmosphere, and before they knew it the children had completed their laps of the school field. Years One and Two walked ten laps, whilst the children in Key Stage 2 walked twenty laps. Photo: How high is the cake? It was baked by our very own Mrs Bradshaw & Miss Smith!

Is Your Child Affected by Cyberbullying? For the most part, social media networks offer a great opportunity for young people to make new friends, share common interests, learn and have fun. However, the use of social media also brings with it risks, with internet safety being one of the most pressing issues facing parents in the digital age. Cyberbullying continues to be one of the biggest challenges facing young people online, with one in five young people experiencing it.

Let’s not forget the bullies. Some young people who bully others do so as a coping mechanism for their own trauma and stressful situations, and they too may need help. Sometimes all a young person needs is someone to talk to.

Cyberbullying has all the hallmarks of playground-type bullying, but doesn’t stop at the school gates – it follows young people home as they use phones, tablets and computer games. It can have a devastating impact, sometimes causing those subjected to it to experience social anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, self-harm and eating disorders.

If you have a concern about a young person, get in touch with us here at Young Persons Counselling Service. We are a local, not-for-profit charity that provides free, confidential counselling to 11-16 year olds across Peterborough. There’s no need to suffer in silence – we’re here to help. Contact us on 0800 634 4395.

So, it’s important to take a young person seriously if they tell you they are being bullied. However, parents may not always be aware that their child is being bullied. Some common warning signs may include low mood, loss in appetite, a desire for isolation, sudden changes in behaviour and a decrease in the time spent focusing on their studies.

Breathing New Life into Coates Garden After much discussion and soul-searching, it was decided to renovate our plough garden at Coates. During the past few years the wooden sleepers supporting the soil had become rotten and begun to disintegrate. It was decided that the sleepers should be replaced with concrete slabs, and the garden would be rejuvenated with a Mediterranean theme. After consulting with Dobbies Garden Centre, the choice of grasses and plants for a low maintainable plot was decided. We are very grateful to Dobbies for their support and their generosity in supplying us with all the plants and material for this project. The right hand picture shows the team with Samantha Bannister, the Dobbies Community Officer.

whittlesey WI October's meeting of the Whittlesey WI was a very informative and interesting talk by Mr Ketterham about clocks and clock repairing. The next gathering, the group’s AGM, will be on Tuesday November 7th at 7.30pm, in St Andrew's Parish Hall. If you are interested and want to get involved, do come along to the meeting, or contact Julie Windle for more information (01733 204445).

The Local Music Scene

Just the ‘Write’ Note? - by Dave Bailey

This month we start to look at song writing options. For many emerging musicians, there comes a point where looking for songs to perform becomes a chore, and the creative bug starts to kick in. The age old question of “what comes first: words or music?” is a favourite when being interviewed, and it is almost as difficult to answer as the classic ‘chicken or egg’ puzzle! Writing your own songs is usually a reactive process triggered by either a tune in your head or a particular event. The process of sitting down with a blank sheet of paper, with the sole intention of writing a song without a theme or basic tune, is a rare occasion. Over the years man has tried all sorts of tricks to inspire, from random note generators, to using mathematical intervals and even wind noises! Lyrics are equally as elusive to flow at times, with songs being triggered by a phrase heard on the TV, radio or in simple conversation. The dilemma is usually referred to as ‘writer’s block’, and can be as frustrating as trying to complete a thousandpiece jigsaw of pebbles on a beach, without the lid of the box!

On the second Monday of each month at the Boat Inn, Whittlesey, Steve Gibbs runs a songwriters’ evening. It begins at 8pm and is free to attend, and as simple as it sounds, the output from these nights can be both fun and thought provoking. Having covered topics like hook, tempo, chord progression, harmonies and keys, the session is usually given a theme, a key signature and a style from which to produce and perform a working (and in most cases entertaining) group song. When space (or weather, when we use the patio) allows, we split into groups or pairs to collaborate. For those of you who have suffered writer’s block, this can be a refreshing change from the blank sheet stare – and with the optional set piece of homework to bring back to the following month’s session, it can really stimulate the creative juices This activity works for all genres, and you by no means have to be a musician or poet. In fact, it is attended by people who cannot read music or write verse, poems or prose, along with those who simply want an insight into the creative arts. Local open mic listings can be found at www.outa-stock.co.uk/OM.htm N OV E M BE R 2 0 1 7

The team at Discovering Whittlesea give our sincere apologies to the Whittlesey Festival Committee for the mistake made with last month’s report on the 2017 Festival. We’d like to stress that the error was entirely down to our own oversight and was in no way the fault of the Committee.

Highlights

Whittlesey Festival Celebrates 10 Y ears in Style Organisers of the Whittlesey Festival, which took place on September 10th, were once again delighted with its success. We’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone who took part – the stall holders, sponsors and the thousands of visitors who came on the day – as we couldn’t have done it without you! It was an absolutely fantastic day, which started with the colourful and musical parade from Broad Street. Thanks again to all those who lined the streets along the route, helping to create a real carnival atmosphere as the parade made its way to the Market Square. The event was officially opened by the Deputy Mayor of Whittlesey, assisted by the Lord Lieutenant and ten-year-old Kacey Green, who had designed this year’s programme cover. Both released balloons into the air to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Festival.

said: “The Whittlesey Festival is by far our favourite event – we simply love the atmosphere, and the visitors are always genuinely interested and passionate about us being there.” The Festival Schools Art Exhibition was held at the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street, showcasing some incredible work from local school pupils. Prizes and trophies were awarded by the Deputy Mayor, and you can see an exclusive feature on the winners on pages 22-23 of this magazine. Once again, a huge thank you to everyone, and we look forward to seeing you at next year's Festival on Sunday September 9th 2018. If you would like more information about how you can get involved, please contact Brian Smithyman on 01733 752093 or Jenny Parker on 01733 351005.

Children were then free to enjoy free face painting, puppet shows and fairground rides, amongst many other activities. There was plenty to do for the adults too, and everyone enjoyed watching the various dance and music presentations from the likes of the Rug-Cutters Lindy Hop Dancers, The Solas School of Irish Dance, the Romford Drum and Trumpet Marching Corp and the Peterborough and Bedford Highland Bands. Crowds were also treated to the traditional Cockney sound of the Pearly King and Queen. The streets were lined with over one hundred and twenty vintage vehicles, adding a touch of nostalgia to the day. A spokesman from this group

A Word from the Royal british legion

Family Fundraising A Whittlesey family is taking part in a series of challenges to raise money for the British Heart Foundation. Martin and Angela Curtis, along with their son and daughter-in-law, have already taken part in the Great North Run and Great Eastern Run and are now planning more half marathons. Angela and Martin are also planning to run a marathon later this year, and will be taking on several long distance cycle rides and duathlons – feats which require enormous effort and dedication, not to mention a lot of time-juggling and night training to complete. Angela explains what inspired the family to raise money for the BHF: “Earlier this year I almost lost my brother after he had a stroke and needed emergency heart surgery. He was in the amazing Papworth Hospital, where surgeons had to perform several lifesaving operations, and is now on the long road to recovery.” “As you can imagine, during this time we found out first-hand how absolutely vital the work that the British Heart Foundation is in saving lives on a daily basis, and in carrying out essential research that helps millions worldwide.” If you would like to sponsor the family, you can do so by visiting www.virginmoneygiving.com/team/ teamcurtis. Any amount will be very gratefully received and will go to fund the awesome work of the British Heart Foundation. 70

Our Late Summer buffet dance was held on Friday September 15th, and proved to be another successful evening. Over 120 guests enjoyed a carved meat buffet and dancing to two different entertainers. Our social organisers did us proud, and were able to donate the profits of £300 to the Poppy Appeal. The next social event will be our Christmas Buffet Dance, which will be held at the Ivy Leaf Club on Friday December 8th 2017. Tickets will be available shortly. At the Annual General Meeting held on Sunday October 1st, the following members were voted into office for the next twelve months: Ken Mayor (Chairman), Wally Newman (Vice Chairman), Judy Darby (Treasurer) and Ray Thrower (Branch Secretary). The financial year for the Poppy Appeal ended on September 30th, and we are pleased to announce that a record amount of £11,750 has been raised. Our thanks go to all who have contributed and helped in any way. This year's Remembrance fortnight starts on Saturday October 28th and finishes on Saturday November 11th, when a short service will be held at 11am at the memorial in Whittlesey. The Remembrance Parade will be on Sunday November 12th, and will set off from the Ivy Leaf Club at 2pm sharp. If anyone would like any further information please do not hesitate to contact us. Big Thanks from NGNPUK! NGNPUK would like to say a massive thank you to Bruce, Denise and everyone at the Letter B for their continued support. We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who organised and took part in the B2B 54-mile bike ride on July 15th (not to mention all the other fundraising events), which raised in total a whopping £4420. We would also like to thank the Whittlesey 41 Club, who donated £621.42, and the Whittlesey Round Table (with fund matching from Forterra) who donated a further £1000. Finally, big thanks are also due to Alan and Janet Smith and everyone who attended the party in memory of their son Ian, who would have been forty this year. Ian’s party raised a massive £1200, and this was further boosted by a very generous donation of £800 from Jamie and Anish Keshwara at Nisa. These donations will make a huge difference to patients, families and nurses out in our local community.

Celebrate with Loved Ones at ‘Lights of Love’ For hundreds of people across the area, Lights of Love at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice has become a key event in the festive calendar. This year’s event, taking place on Sunday December 10th, will focus on giving guests the opportunity to remember, reflect and celebrate the lives of people close to them. All are welcome at the open air carol concert at Thorpe Hall Hospice, Peterborough, which will start at 6pm and feature the City of Peterborough Concert Band. Due to popular demand, former BBC Radio Cambridgeshire presenter Jane Smith will once again host the event, and all those attending will be asked to join in the singing of favourite Christmas carols. The centrepiece will, as usual, be Thorpe Hall’s Lights of Love trees, decked with handwritten messages of love, remembrance and inspiration. Guests will be able to add their own dedication during Lights of Love. There will be refreshments on sale and entrance is free. Event organiser Suzanne Ostler said: “Lights of Love is a lovely way to remember and celebrate the lives of special people with family and friends in the run up to Christmas. We’re hoping all our guests will bring their best voices with them – along with scarves, gloves and hats to keep warm!”

Finance

De-risking Your Assets by Eamonn Dorling

There is a risk of financial loss when your estate is over-exposed to a limited range of underlying asset classes. For example, a couple with their residential home and two rental properties with modest savings may be ‘over-exposed’ in property because if the housing market falls in value, they are powerless to save their estate from falling in value. Similarly, someone with a large portfolio of banking shares might be overexposed to financial markets, and so it goes on. In this piece, I am looking at investment portfolios using more traditional multi asset classes. Recent rises in the stock market and the potential political threats have made some investors consider pulling out of investment markets to hold funds in cash. There is another risk here – that cash held on deposit earns a very low rate of interest, probably lower than the rate of inflation, and this has been the case for several years. Put simply, after a year the interest earned on cash is likely to be smaller than the increase in prices over that period; therefore the purchasing power has gone down. I am sometimes asked what more sophisticated investors do. One option is to increase diversification, which means investing across a wide range of investment opportunities. An old saying warns about putting all your eggs in one basket, and this is essentially what we are contemplating here. A well-managed portfolio of investments has two key advantages. Firstly, it can pull out of risky areas then invest in areas that continue to perform well. Secondly, funds may be drawn

out when they will do most good, rather than having to remain invested in something that needs time to recover, for example the sale of a property. Some low-cost investments aim to track an investment index. An example might be a FTSE100 tracker, where investments aim to emulate the performance of that index. This is fine when the market goes up, but it will also follow the market down (the saving grace being that the costs are modest). An alternative strategy is the use of an actively managed fund where fund manager(s) aim to ‘beat the market’ by acting sooner than, rather than reacting to, the market, and investing in areas that are perceived as good value. The skilful management teams get it right more often than wrong, but management charges are higher. Sometimes a combination of these approaches is beneficial – it depends on your timescale, your outlook and who you are working with.
