Introduction

Welcome to Your August Issue.

Last month I wrote about my impending house move. The good news is that it went well, thanks in no small part to the efforts of the removal men – many thanks – and my wife, myself and the family dog have now happily settled in to our new abode. Now my attention has to turn to another major event… my daughter’s wedding. I’m not sure if this has been a cunning plan devised to get all stress-related events of the year over with in a short, sharp, spell, or an act of madness – I think I now know the answer! Anyway, my future son-in-law’s stag has been safely negotiated and after I’ve finished the magazine I will turn my attention to composing the father of the bride’s speech. As someone who spends a considerable amount of my time hunched over a keyboard and who in the course of my working life has delivered many public speeches you would think this would be a simple matter. Wrong. When the marriage was announced I found I quickly constructed the speech in my head and it seemed like a stroll in the park. Now as the big day approaches, the words have gone, and it seems to have developed in to somewhat of a daunting challenge. Wish me luck….

Andy

This summer has got off to a blistering start with a hot spell not experienced locally for many a year. It is amazing how quickly one becomes accustomed to being greeted by the sun each day and how the dark days of winter are soon forgotten. It’s good news for all those in the local community who are planning family or community events when the fine weather invariably attracts a big turn-out but it’s not so much fun for those people who have to work in the heat of the day outside or who are stuck indoors in a baking hot office. However, I think we should all enjoy it while it lasts and should take advantage of living temporarily an al fresco lifestyle. In a few weeks’ time, the nights will start drawing in, curtains and blinds will be closed earlier, and the summer clothes will be put back in the wardrobe for another year and we will all be reminiscing about the great summer of 2018, so let’s enjoy it while it lasts…

THE SEVEN STARS

T

New tenants Ken Culpeck and Julie Baker are determined to put the sparkle back in to The Seven Stars public house in March. he couple took over the pub in May and already have big plans in place to make it a welcoming attraction for visitors, offering top quality beers, spirits and food.

Ken has more than 30 years’ experience in the licensing and restaurant business, working mainly in the South East of England, including Sweeney Todd’s in his and Julie’s home town of Cambridge, and the couple also ran a restaurant in Tenerife. He said: “We are determined to make it a good, warm, friendly pub for everyone. We have a good range of real ales and craft beers available and are offering top quality pub food at lunchtimes and evenings six days a week.” The couple have moved to the town from the Jolly Brewers pub in Milton near Cambridge and have already enjoyed a warm welcome from regulars and new customers. Julie said: “We didn’t know much about March before we came to the Stars, but we really like the town. We have had a good response from local people and the trade is building week by week.”

The couple plan to host monthly live music as well as holding regular Tuesday quiz nights and VW and classic car gatherings on the third Wednesday of the month. Ken is the pub chef and provides a wide range of good hearty pub dishes and specials, plus specialities such as blackened Cajun tuna steak and salsa and sizzling fajitas, as well as a Sunday roast. Julie added: “We have already attracted a lot of regular drinkers and have also had a lot of repeat business for food. Some of the old regulars have returned, but we welcome everyone to come along and give us a try.” The Seven Stars is open each day (except Mondays) from 12 Noon. Food is available on Tuesday-Saturday from 12pm-2pm and 6pm-9pm, and on Sundays from 12pm-5pm. The Seven Stars, 75 The Avenue, March PE15 9PS. Tel: 01354 655258

Ken added: “It’s a really nice walk into the town centre and March seems lovely. I know that the pub has had a number of different people running it over the past few years, but we have a five-year tenancy and plan to be here for the long-term.”

Eat the Season

PORK AND PEACH KEBABS These are great on the BBQ but if the weather is not on your side, they're just as delicious in the grill!

Method

• Soak eight wooden skewers in cold water for at least five minutes. • Cut the pork into large cubes, then halve and stone the peaches and cut them into chunks. • Grate the zest from half the lemon and squeeze out the juice. Reserve one tbsp of the juice, then mix the remainder with the zest and honey. • Thread the pork and peach slices alternately onto the skewers. • Brush all over with the honey and lemon mix, then grill or barbecue for 10-12 mins, turning regularly, until cooked. • Separate the lettuce leaves and mix with the watercress. • Whisk the reserved lemon juice with the olive oil, mustard and a little seasoning. • Toss with the salad leaves and serve with the kebabs.

Village Life

When Kids Made Their Own Fun – by Jayne Whytock

S

o, the summer holidays are upon us once again. And it made me think back to times when computers were only for offices and holidays abroad were only for the well off. What did we do with our children for six whole weeks?

Well strangely enough we didn’t actually have to do much. They made their own entertainment. Now it could just be my memory playing tricks but years ago the summer holidays were always full of long sunny days, only broken by the occasional thunderstorm (which was always at night). So, every day the children were up early, had their breakfast and were then out. There would be a group of them all from the village and they would head to the War Memorial Field or Eaton Estate armed with bottles of drink and a supply of snacks in a carrier bag. Once there, they would decide what the theme was for that day. It might be soldiers and Red Indians, or spacemen off on an adventure. They improvised with dressing up clothes and it was not unknown for them to pop back home to collect a variety of clothing (often not theirs) to dress up in and I remember a dining chair, clothes horse and blankets (way before duvets were used) disappearing from the house. I never did find out what the chair was for! There were the football tournaments and Olympic Games where they spilt into teams and ran races, did long jump and even attempted high jump, with little success! 8

D I S C O V E R I N G

March

At around lunchtime the front door would open and a dozen children would traipse in, asking for sandwiches and drink. How we managed to feed them all is still a mystery to me. Although to be fair they did go to a different parent’s house each day. When they played on Eaton Estate the tree on the green often played a major part in the day’s activities. It makes me shiver, even now, when I think back to how they used to climb as high as they could and then launch themselves out to see who could leap the furthest. Funnily enough, apart from the occasional scraped knee they never seemed to suffer any bad injuries thank goodness. And if they did have a little accident there was always a mum on hand with a plaster and a tissue to wipe away the tears. The one game that they still remember to this day was the legendary man hunt. Basically, it was a mixture of hide and seek and tag. They’d spilt into twos or threes and go to different parts of the village to hide. Then the rest would rush off to find them. Unfortunately, some of the places they hid were behind hedges in people’s gardens and round the side of houses but I don’t remember anyone ever getting cross with them, although they were often told off by us parents for going on people’s property without permission. All fantastic memories of a time when children were happy to play without the aid of technology and the world seemed a safer, happier place.

Health

Do You Suffer From Tired, Aching Muscles? Most of us who take part in sport, incur physical stresses and sometimes injury. However, similar problems can also occur due to work or family life. With jobs that involve being in the same position for long periods of time, like sitting at a desk using a computer, driving, or standing, muscles can become tired and over-used, leading to aches and pains or even injuries. Sports and Remedial massage can be beneficial to treat tight, over-used muscles, to help relax them, ease tension and help prevent or treat injury. Many occupations result in tension build-up in muscles that are used repeatedly over a period of time. This commonly affects hairdressers, office workers and more manual occupations. Our Sports and Remedial massage therapist can use a variety of massage techniques to treat you and to assess underlying postural and occupational factors, providing you with advice on how to reduce problems in the future. Regular massage can also be beneficial to sports people, to help prevent injury, improve their training regime, assist rehabilitation and speed recovery times after exercise. For information on how you could benefit from Sports and Remedial massage, please call us on 01354 651200.

Matty Alexander has seen his fitness improve dramatically since quitting smoking five years ago. The 28-year-old, a tobacco smoker since the age of 11, gave up a 30-a-day habit and now uses e-cigarettes and e-liquids. He said: “It has been amazing. The difference in my fitness since I stopped smoking tobacco is remarkable. I knew I had to stop when I jogged about a mile into town one day and then felt like I was dying when I returned home. “I now play football, go swimming and generally feel much better than I did when I smoked tobacco. Also, I don’t smell horrible in front of my two children.” Matty, who works for Phoenix Electronic Cigarettes, estimates he spends around £23 a month using a nicotine-based liquid, instead of the £120+ a month he was spending when smoking roll-ups. He added: “I do vape with other flavours but that is more of a hobby. The nicotine fix I still enjoy is both cheaper to use and less harmful.”

Franchise store owner – and fellow ex-smoker – Ramon Wolsing added that nicotine is the only chemical in the e-liquid Matty uses instead of the 6000+ chemicals that are found in tobacco cigarettes. He said: “There is no tar build up, no carbon monoxide and no combustion.” Phoenix Electronic Cigarettes, 4 Fenland Walk, March PE15 8TW. Tel: 07841 974021. Protecting your skin against harmful UV rays can help prevent premature ageing which can encourage pigmentation, sun spots and age spot formation.

Eve Taylor’s Moisturising Solar Shield SPF 25 is ideal for all skin types and conditions. Nourishing emollients moisturise the skin and keep it hydrated – you can also apply this to your chest and arms for added protection throughout summer. Available from Be Fabulous Salon – £11.50

Keep your pout luscious and hydrated

Lips lack a protective outer layer, so they're incredibly sensitive to UV rays. By using Seal and Protect Lip Balm with an SPF 10 you will further guard against thinning, dryness, and sun spots. This lip balm forms an ideal base prior to lipstick application. Nourishing oils lubricate while anti-oxidants quench free-radicals. It also forms a protective barrier against the elements such as wind and UV exposure. Available from Be Fabulous Salon – £4.80

Protect your strands

Protecting your hair is just as important as protecting your skin. UV rays break down the cuticle, leaving your strands dry, damaged, and frizzy. So, spritz a leave-in conditioner with SPF over your strands and this will help protect your hair and keep it soft and stop your colour from altering. Aussie Miracle Hair Spritz is perfect for this.

Light, breathable make-up

My summer make-up changes quite vastly during the summer months. I like products that are weightless and that will allow my skin to breathe through the hot weather. The Lasting Finish Breathable Foundation is Rimmel's most lightweight long wearing formula and it’s my go-to summer foundation.

It perfects your skin with light to medium buildable coverage. It is enriched with breathable skin technology and moisturises for up to 25 hours and with an SPF 20, you don’t need to worry about your skin not being protected from harsh UV rays. Paired with Rimmel’s Lasting Finish Breathable Concealer, with medium coverage, it helps to conceal imperfections. This pair is the perfect duo for natural-looking skin this summer. Available from Boots or Superdrug – Foundation £11.50/Concealer £5.99

Add a pop of colour

I always like to keep my summer make-up minimal but still looking fresh.

If you would like to add some colour try a coloured eyeliner, such as turquoise or green, or add a coral lipstick to punch up your summer look. Minimal and sheer make-up is the way to go when it’s hot and muggy outside.

Have a Fabulous Day!

Available from Boots or Superdrug – £11.99

Home Interiors

Problem Solving – by Interior Designer & Writer, Yasmin Chopin

Design is concerned with function and aesthetics, that is to say, how something works or performs and how it looks. To consider design as an artistic practice is only half of it. It is fundamentally a process of finding solutions to problems. In our homes, problems tend to appear in multiples; not enough storage, awkward shaped rooms, dark corners, too many doors, poor circulation space, ugly pipes, peeling paint. It is a list that can grow the more you think about it. You could argue that the mere fact we have a home, a roof over our head, ought to be sufficient to make us happy. Yet our emotional response to space can be overwhelmingly positive or negative, and understanding the psychology involved is part of my role as an interior designer. Spaces affect our senses, make us feel content, comfortable, ill-at-ease, sad. One aspect that plays a significant role in design and impacts on the way we feel is geometry. Take lines, angles, curves and shapes into account next time you improve your home or make a new purchase. Here are three shapes to consider for the home and garden: Circles: fun and friendly Imagine this summer house with a square window and it suddenly loses its funky appeal. Make it a party - dine at home cabaret-style around a circular table.

Squares: safe and strong Find reassurance in a square’s equal dimensions. Feel grounded and comforted by the neatness of a square rug. Get a sense of stability when a square is cubed as in this planter. Hexagons: clever and classy A single object can have impact but when this six-sided honeycomb shape is used in repetition it makes patterns of complexity as each hexagon fits with the next. Evoke a soupçon of admiration amongst your friends with sophisticated hexagons. Image credits: Porcelain tile – Walls and Floors Ltd. Summerhouse, planter – Cuckooland.

Consumer Advice

How to Avoid the PostHoliday Burglary Blues or a Domestic Drama WHETHER you’ve booked a week or two in the sun or have planned a short family break – don’t forget to add home security and property protection to your checklist. We can all greatly reduce the risk of burglary by taking a few simple security measures to help make our home less attractive to thieves. Before you go on holiday: • Cancel milk and newspaper deliveries. • Set up automatic timer switches to turn your lights on when it gets dark. • Register for the Royal Mail’s ‘keepsake’ service. • Cut front and back lawns and trim back plants. • Don’t discuss holiday plans on social media. • Ask a trusted neighbour to watch over your home whilst you’re away. • Ensure all windows and doors, gates, garages and sheds are locked.

If you are considering installing or upgrading any CCTV security / lighting or alarm systems – or even changing the locks – Safe Local Trades has many reputable traders who can help across the PE postcode areas. However, as well as protecting your property from burglars, it is also worth giving some thought to preventing domestic dramas whilst you’re away. Research has shown that around 25% of Brits have come back from their holiday to a home emergency, with water leaks the most common problem for those who have been faced with an unexpected disaster. Boiler breakdowns, pest infestations, and appliance breakdowns are among some of the other unwanted homecoming dramas. Turning off the water supply at the stopcock, switching off the boiler and unplugging all electrical items before going away are sound preventative measures.

Don’t forget to check...

• Keep items that could be used to break into your property such as ladders, tools and wheelie bins stored safely away.

How to gain up to a third more storage space in your home, in just one day! Space is critical in every home. Think of the number of times you’ve thought: “It would be good to keep this; the problem is where?” Well, how about your loft? In the average home it accounts for between a quarter to one-third of the volume. That’s a huge area that can add so many uses and benefits to family life. Perhaps it’s difficult to get into? Not floored for storage or use? Access4Lofts solve all these problems with simplicity. They specialise in developing lofts for storage. Safe access to your loft... The majority of properties have an access hatch to the space in the loft. Access4Lofts create space the easy and affordable way. They can supply and install a new loft hatch and a safe, sturdy aluminium loft ladder in your home in just one day! That means that your dark and dismal roof space suddenly becomes a useful storage area for all that family clutter. “My experience enables fitting the ladder and converting the access hatch, in double-quick time. The space is accessible and there's no mess left behind," says Paul Norgate of Access4Lofts Peterborough. 24

D I S C O V E R I N G

March

Floored and useful... Another option is to install a loft hatch and ladder and board out a decent sized area of your loft. This gives you somewhere to store the suitcases or keep your winter/summer clothes. As soon as you have this additional space you'll wonder how you lived without it for so long. Added property value exceeds fitting cost... With the problems of moving house today, not to mention all the stress of the move, this is a simple solution which adds value to your property. With a safe ladder giving access to your loft, everybody can store their goodies away from the living area. And, if you are planning to sell your home, easy access to the loft space could give your home the advantage over other houses your buyer might be looking at. If you'd like to find out how Paul can transform your loft into a useful storage area, then give him a call on 01733 663207 or take a look at www.access4lofts.co.uk/peterborough AUGUST 2018

Pre-nuptial Agreements - The Insurance Policy for Marriage BY DANIEL SIMS – TRAINEE SOLICITOR

We don’t think twice about paying for car insurance, we hope we will never need to use it, but in the event of a breakdown or a collision we are grateful for the cover it provides and for the hassle it spares us. So why don’t we take a similar, insurance-based approach to marriage? In the unfortunate event of a marriage breakdown, the courts have considerable discretion to determine the financial matters. The court will look to the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973 and consider factors such as the parties’ ages and earnings before making orders regarding the family home and pension funds. Having a pre-nuptial agreement in place can help remove the uncertainty that accompanies financial proceedings. A ‘pre-nup’ is an agreement in which a couple set out which of them owns certain property and how they would like assets to be divided should they later divorce. This can be particularly valuable where the couple have previously been married to others and wish to safeguard assets for their respective children, or where one of the parties’ families are gifting or loaning money for a home and wish this to be protected.

No agreement will override the 1973 Act nor prevent a judge from deciding on an appropriate division of assets, but it will be considered as a relevant circumstance of the case. The Supreme Court in a case called Radmacher v Granatino (2010) said that pre-nups should be upheld if they are freely entered into by each party with a full appreciation of its implications unless it would be unfair to hold the parties to the agreement in the circumstances. An example of this would be when the agreement would not meet the needs of any children of the family. In order to satisfy this, and to be given serious consideration by the court, there are various safeguards which should be in place when a couple enter into such an agreement. To avoid concerns regarding undue pressure, agreements should not be made within the 28 days preceding the marriage ceremony. Furthermore, to ensure that both parties are making a fully informed decision, they should collect and exchange financial documents, such as bank statements, so that it is clear what their respective financial positions are and what they could be entitled to in the case of a divorce. Each party should also receive independent legal advice so they can fully understand the consequences of entering into the agreement. It may seem an unromantic topic to discuss but having a pre-nuptial agreement in place can save parties money and stress if the marriage does break down in the future. Couples will obviously hope that they will never need to rely on it, but as with car and home insurance, simply knowing that it is there ‘just in case’ can bring peace of mind.

big thank you to everyone locally who supported this year’s Read to Succeed, now in its third year. Together we raised more than 2000 new books, so every Year 4 child in North East Cambridgeshire and many Year 5s received their own book to keep and enjoy over the summer holidays. Last year, the campaign resulted in a 50 percent increase in children taking part in our local libraries Summer Reading Challenge which involves reading six books over the summer break with the free book counting towards their total. You may have seen some of the posters around town. If you know any primary school children, please encourage them to attend their local library to take part as we have a range of fantastic prizes including:

• Individual Prize Winners will also be invited to a tour around the Houses of Parliament All children aged four to eleven years are welcome to take part in the Summer Reading Challenge. This year, the theme is ‘Mischief Makers’ inspired by the much-loved iconic children’s title ‘Beano’ – I am very much looking forward to enjoying some of the books on offer with my own children!

Property

The Sun Has Got His Hat On - by Mike Ellis

As the temperatures have risen over the last six weeks so has the number of property sales so we think we can safely say the usual Easter selling market has finally arrived! We started to see the number of viewings go up which is usually the prelude to offers/sales coming in and that’s exactly what’s happened with more sales in May and June than we were expecting which is great news. Many of the offers are coming in on our new instructions and a few properties that have been recently reduced in price. Over the last few months there has been much uncertainty over the housing market, including buy to lets and the wider economy. With Brexit and interest rates taking over much of the mainstream

media, it's small wonder that buyers are often frightened off by headlines, however read a little further and these predictions are always less gloomy than they first appear. We’ve seen buyer confidence grow and there are still many great mortgage deals available encouraging tenants, who are paying similar amounts for rent as they would on a mortgage, to take advice from our financial advisor and then going out to view and offer on property. If you’ve been thinking about selling but just not sure if it’s the right time, or you would like some information from our financial advisor, please call us – we’re happy to help. There’s never really a right or wrong time to sell, but judging by the business we’re seeing now, this could be the best time to put your property on the market this year. FENLAND EX-SERVICEMEN AND WOMEN ARE HONOURED Ex-servicemen and women from across Fenland were honoured when a special service in recognition of national Armed Forces Day was held in Whittlesey. The High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire, Dr Andrew Harter CBE, presented HM Armed Forces Veterans Badges to more than 30 military personnel when Fenland District Council held a Veterans Day Commemoration Service. More than 100 people gathered at Whittlesey’s St Mary’s Church for the moving celebration, which paid tribute to Britain’s armed forces and their families and recognised the enormous contributions and sacrifices that have been made, past and present. Conducted by Reverend Nigel Whitehouse, the service saw almost every branch of the wider forces family represented. There were veterans of the Army, Navy and Royal Air Force, as well as submariners, marines and special forces. There were regulars, territorial, reservists, auxiliaries and Merchant Navy. Dr Harter said it was a “huge honour and privilege” to present HM Veterans Badges during a year of significant anniversaries – the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War; the 100th anniversary of the Royal Air Force, and the 75th anniversary of Operation Chastise, more famously known as the Dambusters raid. Chairman of Fenland District Council Cllr Mrs Kay Mayor said: “We are proud to be able to honour our veterans at this service, with 34 being presented with their Veterans Badges here today. A further 11 who were unable to attend have been sent their badges together with a letter of thanks. On behalf of us all, I thank you for your service to Crown and country.” Afterwards, light refreshments were served at Childers Sports and Social Club. LOCAL ARTIST CREATES ANIMAL MURAL Cambridgeshire Community Reuse and Recycling Network (CCORRN) have been joined by a team of Marks and Spencer volunteers to transform the outside of their Community Reuse Centre premises.

AN ALL-STAR DAY AT THE CRICKET March Town Cricket Club hosted Cambridgeshire County Cricket Club v Bedfordshire County Cricket Club in a T/20 double header. During the lunch break the local ‘All Stars Cricket’ children demonstrated their cricketing skills under the guidance of activator Rob Tombs. All Stars Cricket is a new initiative from the ECB aimed at providing children aged five to eight with a great first experience in cricket. Every child that registers receives a backpack full of goodies including a cricket bat, ball, activity book, personalised shirt and a cap. Sessions are at the club on Sunday mornings from 10am-11am.

GERMAN VISITORS SAY AUF WIEDERSEHEN Fenland Twinning Association has bid ‘auf wiedersehen’ to its German friends following a fun-packed visit to the district. Among the highlights of their visit was a day-trip to Norfolk, which included seal watching at Blakeney and a steam train ride on the North Norfolk Railway from Sheringham to Holt.

Working with a local artist, the team completed a vibrant mural using paint from CCORRN’s Community RePaint scheme which shows how leftover paint can totally transform a community space. The volunteers were taking part in Marks and Spencer’s ‘Making Every Moment Special’ programme, in partnership with Neighbourly, an online giving platform which connects charities, businesses and communities. It’s one of Marks and Spencer’s most ambitious volunteer programmes to date, mobilising more than 5000 staff members from over 640 stores across the UK and pairing them with over 580 charity events. In March, the eight volunteers worked with local artist and CCORRN supporter Michelle DeynaHayward to complete the exciting mural. DeynaHayward designed the piece which features a range of animals including unicorns, polar bears and penguins, as well as some cleverly disguised paint containers. Nikki DiGiovanni, head of products and policy at CCORRN, said: “We are so pleased to have this support from Marks and Spencer. Their volunteers have allowed us to create a magical mural which we hope will spark local people’s imaginations. We really wanted to do something inspiring and creative which would reflect what people can expect to find inside our Scrapstore and Community RePaint scheme. We’d love for people to come down to take a look at the mural and let us know what they think.”

Guests also visited Wisbech to see the Rose Fair and Peckover House and took a trip to Ely, while others enjoyed time with their host families. There was also a dinner dance at Childers Sports and Social Club in Whittlesey, with music by the One Eyed Cats, and a barbecue at Gorefield Sports Pavilion and Community Centre. Anyone who wants to get involved with the Fenland Twinning Association can contact Mike Cornwell, the association’s secretary, via email at: fenlandtwinning@gmail.com Photo: Saying it with flowers – Fenland District Council chairman Cllr Kay Mayor with Christian Wagner, the Bergermeister of Stadt Nettetal. Technology

The New Version of Windows 10 - Problems and Solutions Very recently Microsoft issued a new version of Windows 10. It is called V1803 (March 2018), and is now being rolled out to most people’s computers. However, it has caused problems for many, many users. Issues range from Chrome not working correctly and/or hardware no longer working, e.g. microphones which are very easy to fix by reinstalling Chrome or reinstalling the driver for the non-working hardware. Major issues, though, include the computer creating a brand new account and making it look as if all documents/ pictures are missing, through to Windows 10 no longer working at all – the ‘whirligig of death’ where you only see a black spinning circle. If you are affected by this, in the majority of cases, your computer will need a fresh install of Windows to remedy the problem. However, there are things you can do to help yourself in the event of something happening to your Windows 10 installation – or any Microsoft installation.

Back-up Make sure your files are regularly backed up to a separate back-up disk. This is best done through the functions available in the ‘Control Panel’. Press the ‘Windows’ key on your keyboard and scroll through your apps and then click on ‘Windows System’, where the second app down will be Control Panel. Alternatively, if you have the ‘Cortana’ search window in your task bar, just type ‘Control Panel’ in the search bar and the desktop app will be offered to you, then press enter and this app will open. If you are seeing eight sections appearing, then within the ‘System and Security’ section choose Backup and Restore (Windows 7) – don’t worry,

this works perfectly fine for your Windows 10. You can now set up a full backup, or alternatively just create a ‘System Image’. A system image is, effectively, a ‘snapshot’ of your entire hard disk. It will contain all of your files as well as your operating system and can be used very easily to restore your disk back to normal as of the date of the backup. Finally, as part of the process to set this up, you can have Windows create backups on a weekly, or other basis, thereby ensuring you will never lose your precious pictures/files; nor your system.

Change Windows Update Settings Whenever Microsoft issues a major revision like the V1803, they always issue an updated version in the autumn. This will contain all the fixes to the problems caused by the first issue. So you can stop your computer updating as follows. Type ‘Windows Update’ in the Cortana search box in your task bar. This will take you to Windows Update settings, where you will chose Advanced Options. Then select ‘Choose When Updates Are Installed’ and select ‘Semi-Annual Channel’ – which means that it is ready for widespread use in organisations. Furthermore, within this section you can also defer the installation of both feature updates as well as quality updates. By following the above simple steps, should any form of major problem occur, including failure of your hard disk, you will have everything available to restore your computer back to normal operation very quickly. Hope this helps and happy computing! Deborah & Len

brought to view a couple of perfectly preserved human bodies hundreds of years old. On the island bells were chimed to warn fishermen to return before sunset or risk coming to grief in the marsh.

Small lakes serving the islanders’ supply of food occasionally became mysteriously agitated, rippling like the sea. It was strong enough to overturn the fishermen’s boats. No-one ever discovered what caused such a phenomenon. People were known to drown. Many had narrow escapes when they ventured too far into the morass. A boy sank up to his armpits and was found just in the nick of time.

Harvests on the island and drained fields were prolific and the islanders sold crops to people living in the upland region. The Fens were famous for speed skaters and many became national champions. The Fens was the best skating region in the country. The inhabitants of March and nearby villages benefitted from regular employment in the winter and during the summer turned their attention to growing wheat which thrived on newly drained soil.

An old story originating from Doddington describes how a villager was seen walking cautiously around the edge of a drained field. A passer-by called to him: “Are you alright?” Turning slowly the man replied: “There was a horse here this morning.” Apparently the animal had sunk into the mud and its handler was nowhere to be seen except for his hat on the surface! In the 1890s deep ploughing

Fenland was regarded as the finest agricultural land in Britain. The fisheries virtually disappeared and the natural rivers and man-made drains are of immense value to the area and farther afield. Numerous pumps including the second largest in Europe keep the water in the Fens under control.

CONCERT IN AID OF HELP FOR HEROES REMEMBERING THOSE WHO FELL IN WW1

This year sees the centenary of the end of World War One. To say thank you to all those who served, sacrificed and changed our world March Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal would like to see a poppy on each lamppost in the centre of March – there are 31 – for the Remembrance Parade and is appealing to local businesses organisations and individuals to sponsor a poppy with a minimum donation of £10. Anyone interested in helping should contact March Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal organisers Alec and Kay Larham on 01354 656034 or 0790 8009378 or email klarham@yahoo.co.uk Many serious issues that affected soldiers and their families after the First World War – including injury, permanent disability, homelessness, poverty and a nation challenged economically – still affect servicemen and women and their families today. Members of the British Armed Forces community, 100 years on from the First World War, deal regularly with risk and sacrifice. The Royal British Legion is here to support them and provide life-long care – today and for as long as it is needed.

A LEGACY FOR LEAH

A charity fund-raising event is being held this month for a little girl who tragically lost her mother. Robyn Dunlop passed away aged just 27 years leaving behind her five-year-old daughter Leah. A Legacy for Leah is being held at March United Services Club on Saturday, August 4th to raise funds for her when she reaches the age of 21. Robyn, a single mother, was taken to hospital with stomach pains in March this year but when no cause was found she was released, went to bed and never woke up. The cause was later identified as a tear in the stomach resulting in sepsis and heart failure. Now a charity event is being held featuring local ska group Skarma who will perform classics from 50

get a good lather, which can aggravate and irritate the skin. As well as being abrasive, hard water doesn’t necessarily wash the entire residue off. This residue can be left on the skin which can worsen dry skin conditions. The NHS website lists “water especially hard, chalky water or heavy chlorinated water” as a common irritant of contact dermatitis.

We can supply all types of water softener and other related drinking water products. We also supply and deliver salt for all types of water softeners and we are especially proud of the personal service we offer our customers. What are the downsides of having hard water? New research has revealed the link between hard water and skin conditions like eczema. Scientists at the University of Sheffield and King’s College London have proved that hard water damages the skin, raising the risk of infection and potentially contributing to the development of eczema. The study, which we were asked to fund, proves what we’ve known here for years; when it comes to skin conditions, softened water can make all the difference. Minerals in hard water, the same culprits behind limescale, were shown to make skin more sensitive to irritation, but when researchers used softened water in their study, they found that softened water could reduce these negative effects. It could even lower the risk of eczema developing in the first place. For people living with chronic skin conditions, this research could be a game-changer, especially when one in five children is affected by eczema. With hard water you have to use more product to

How does a water softener work? In brief, it is designed to remove calcium (scale) and magnesium (scum) from hard water. They are installed at the point the water supply enters the premises and treat the whole house, therefore resulting in: reducing the cost of your soap/ detergent, removing existing limescale, preventing the build-up of limescale in your hot water system as well as around your taps and reducing your fuel costs and heating system costs. The 9 wonders of having a water softener: Bigger bubble baths, Cheaper bills , Fewer products, Perfect cups of tea, Glossier hair, Longer-lasting appliances, Shinier home, Softer skin, Better for the environment. Let us make your home sparkly, your cuppa tastier, your skin silkier, clothes softer and your appliances last longer, all the while saving you money along the way! Martin Coulson

Martin Coulson – Locksmith

Ibal qualified locksmith

Useful tip: When you move into a new, pre-owned property, get the locks changed – you never know who still has a key to get into your (new) home! That sound advice comes courtesy of local sole trader, Martin Coulson, who set up his business two years ago, and who is now developing a favourable reputation, as a qualified locksmith, across his trading area, within a twenty-five mile radius of Peterborough. Martin’s work includes the supply and fitting of most new types of lock, for both domestic and commercial premises. Available at the end of a phone twenty-four hours a day, Martin can also be called upon to repair jammed doors, and to help people who have been locked out of their car or their home. Needless to say, he could also replace your locks, were you to actually follow his advice above!

Adam’s Tyre and Mot Centre prides itself on providing a personal and professional service to vehicle owners in March. The company was formed four-and-a-half years ago by Adam Davis, who has more than 20 years’ experience in the trade including a 12-year stint at Central Tyre where he was a former manager. Adam (42) is joined in the business by his wife Melissa, who runs the office, and tyre fitter Steve Arnold. The two men are fully qualified and have more than 60 years’ combined experience in the business, something that Adam feels is invaluable. He said: “Arnie and I don’t try to upsell; we cater for our individual customers’ requirements. There is no pressurised sell. We always try to make sure they get their money’s worth and we cater very much for what the customer actually needs and supply everything from budget to branded tyres so there are always options for them.” The company carries out Class IV MoT tests and Class I & II motorcycle MoTs as well as supplying tyres from four main sources, with access to other major suppliers when required. The work is split 70:30 in favour of MoTs. A number of local garages use Adam’s for their MoT and tyre requirements with Adam in return also recommending garages for repair work. Adam said: “We have a very good relationship with local garages and recommend each other for the work we each specialise in.” Melissa (38) added that the company’s location in Rookswood Road is ideal for people who want to leave their car and go into town. She said: “Our close proximity to the town centre means that, for example, a woman can leave her car with us and pop into town to do the shopping while it is being looked at. We’re not stuck on the outskirts of March on an industrial estate, we are easily accessible.” Adam’s Tyre and Mot Centre has a healthy, loyal customer base. Melissa said: “We have customers of all ages. It is amazing how many people book up through our Facebook page, especially younger customers. Both Adam and Steve are fully-qualified and with their experience customers can be assured that they will get a professional and personal service.” Outside of work, father-of-two Adam is also well known on the local music scene as he is lead guitarist with local band Catch 22.
