Introduction

Welcome to Your June Issue.

When I was at school many, many years ago, June was a month that filled me with mixed emotions. It was the time of year when the dreaded school exams were in full-swing. A time when out of school hours you knew you should be revising but the lure of meeting your mates was hard to resist. At the end of it all, was the prospect of what was then the six-week summer holidays, the best time of year for most school pupils, although often blighted by the need to earn some pocket-money. On a serious note. Exam-time can be extremely stressful for both schoolkids and parents. As teenagers get older and face the prospect of becoming equipped to deal with life at college or in the so-called ‘real world’, exams take on an even greater importance which can lead to increased stress and anxiety, so give them your support. On a completely different note. This month also sees England’s latest bid to win the football World Cup for the first time since 1966 when my namesake Geoff Hurst scored a hat-trick to help secure a famous victory. Unfortunately, the prospect of watching England play fills me with another bout of mixed emotions…

Andy

Andy writes this month about the anxieties of the end-ofyear school exams which become even more important as pupils reach the end of their school lives. However, school days also represent a time of excitement; of learning new skills and developing the attributes that help personal development. One of the great pleasures for many schoolchildren is reading, so I was pleased to hear about our local MP Steve Barclay’s Read to Succeed Campaign which aims to raise enough money to buy a new reading book for every Year 4 child in North East Cambridgeshire. Reading opens up children’s imaginations and can lead to a life-long love affair that will continue throughout their lives. Whatever your politics, I believe his campaign is great news for local schoolchildren…

Local Business

MARCH QUALITY MEATS Summer is the season of the great British barbecue. It’s the time of year when men who would not dream of using a kitchen cooker proudly get out the barbecue as they try to impress their friends and family. But, of course, it’s all about obtaining the finest meat for your barbecue such as from local butcher March Quality Meats. The company has built up an enviable reputation for more than 25 years and offers a selection of BBQ packs from its High Street premises. It supplies bronze, silver, gold and platinum BBQ packages, with prices starting from just £10. The business is run by 55-year-old Dave Lyons who said the warm weather influences customers’ buying habits. He said: “The weather makes such a difference to what people want to eat. They don’t want roasts when it is hot; they buy different things at different times of the year and in the summer our BBQ packages prove really popular. “We have invested £30,000 in new machinery so that we can make our own sausages and regularly make half-a-ton a week, but with the recent hot weather we produced a ton of sausages in a week. We also make our own burgers and put 8

together a wide range of packs, but we are also flexible and can make individual packs up to suit our customers’ preferences.”

Dave, who with a full and part-time staff of 16 also runs a butcher’s shop and cafe in High Street Manea called Meat & Eat, has a loyal customer base with many people travelling regularly from as far afield as Peterborough and King’s Lynn to buy at his shop, and some even stopping off to purchase when they travel to the area from France. As well as the shop trade, he also supplies a number of local restaurants, pubs, schools and residential homes with his produce which includes all the traditional beef, pork and lamb cuts and poultry. Dave started out in the meat business as a 13-year-old schoolboy when got a part-time job at a butcher’s in Hayes, Middlesex. Married to Zena with four children, he spent many years selling at local markets in London and the south before moving to Cambridgeshire in 1992 when he opened his first shop, also in High Street, March before moving to his current impressive premises in 2002. He said: “I’ve been involved in the meat business virtually all my life. It has changed a lot over the years, but I still really enjoy it.” March Quality Meats, 27-29 High Street, March PE15 9JA. Australia’s Great Barrier Reef - More Than You Can Dream Of!

Ellie Cuthbert

Marketing & Admin Assistant

The Great Barrier Reef, off the coast of North Eastern Australia, is the world’s largest living structure, as well as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. And it isn’t hard to see why… The reef, at around 65km wide in some parts, is a gathering of brilliant, vivid coral, containing an abundance of tropical marine life, providing divers with the most spectacular underwater experience imaginable. The reef is a breeding area for humpback whales, migrating from the Antarctic and is also the habitat of a few endangered species, including the dungong (sea cow), and the large green sea turtle. There are a wide variety of ways to experience the reef, allowing you to choose your own adventure. Whether you’re diving amongst the fish, or viewing it through a glass bottom boat, the reef is sure to leave a lasting impression. Snorkelling is the easiest, cheapest and most popular way to be in close contact with the reef and its array of colourful creatures. Alternatively, keep your hair and face dry and breathe as normal whilst walking beneath the waves with the ‘Seawalker’ experience. The specially designed Seawalker helmet allows you to walk along the sand of the Great Barrier Reef without swimming or diving. You can also go sailing, hire yachts, catamarans or even give yourself the tour and hire a paddle board. For those looking for a more daring experience, you can even sky dive in Cairns and view the reef from above!

out of the deep waters into the outer reef. Or for something completely different, try ‘Scuba Doo’, an underwater scooter that you can drive around underwater to see the reef at your own leisure. There’s also the option to go whale watching or swimming with dolphins. If exploring the Great Barrier Reef is on your bucket list, then why not start planning that dream trip with one of our Travel Experts today?

To make the experience even more exciting, you can hire a Liveaboard boat for three to fifteen nights and venture

Get RID of that Fungal Nail Infection! Fungal infections occur when microscopic fungi enter the nail usually due to trauma to the nail. Fungi that are already present in or on your body can also reproduce and spread through the nail, causing nail infections. The fungi thrive between the toes in the moist warm environment of socks and shoes.

Fungal nail infections can affect 8% of the population at any one time. They can be unsightly, and people are often embarrassed by the way they look. It may affect part of the nail, the entire nail, or several nails. Common signs of a fungal nail infection include a distorted nail that may be discoloured; it may lift off from the nail bed and become brittle and thickened. Podiatrists have been researching new methods for treatment, and we are now delighted to offer ‘The Lacuna Method’. This involves drilling multiple holes across the fungal area. We then direct anti-fungal

spray into the holes and spray across the nail plate. The treatment involves this spray being re-applied at home every day and returning to us in six weeks for a review. This treatment has proved to give very effective results, it is relatively painless and no anaesthetic is required. We allow about an hour for the treatment. Our podiatrists can discuss with you multiple treatment options, including the Lacuna Method, and we can help you to have nicer nails in time for summer....

Hearing Problems? No Problem! Come to Clearer Hearing We, at Clearer Hearing, like to give our clients just that... clearer hearing, whether it be by performing safe, effective, painless wax removal and/or supplying ‘state of the art’, discreet hearing aids. Why is it that people think nothing of getting their eyes checked, but they rarely think about getting their ears checked? We think ears and hearing should be checked regularly, just as eyes are. We have hearing centres in the Broadway, St Ives and the High Street in Wisbech, with clinics held regularly in March and Wells-next-the-Sea. Home visits are available upon request, and we are always happy to offer free, friendly advice on all hearing issues. Our wax removal services are very popular, and we aim to see clients for this service within forty-eight hours of them originally contacting us. Our hearing aids are ‘state of the art’ and very discreet and, above all, very effective.

If you are a hearing aid wearer and you use a mobile phone or tablet, we can programme our hearing aids to play phone calls direct into your hearing aids, and any music you may have on your phone or tablet can be played directly through your hearing aids. If you have any questions on any hearing-related issues, please feel free to contact us at either of our hearing centres.

• Free hearing tests • State of the art rechargeable hearing aids which are compatible with all mobile phones • Effective painless wax removal • Noise protection You can visit us at one of our local clinics: St Ives Practice 13 The Broadway St Ives PE27 5BX Tel: (01480) 300955

The event on Saturday, July 28th promises to be full of fun, with a live band to entertain until the film begins. In addition, there will be hot food and drinks, or guests are welcome to take a picnic. CHILDREN PUT SAFETY FIRST AT WORKSHOPS Hundreds of primary schoolchildren learned vital safety skills as part of a series of interactive workshops being held across Fenland. Around 350 Year Five pupils from 11 schools in and around March and Chatteris took part in the Safety Zone, which teaches children how to stay safe at home and in the community. The first workshops were held at March Fire Station with more due to be held at Whittlesey Fire Station and Wisbech Fire Station in June. This year’s lessons include what do to if there's a fire in your home, the best ways to help someone struggling in water – and even how to avoid scaring a dog. Other topics include staying safe in cars, coping with bullying and how to identify and report antisocial behaviour. The Safety Zone is a Fenland Community Safety Partnership project and has been running for more than 10 years. It is organised by Fenland District Council and Cambridgeshire County Council with help from Cambridgeshire Police, Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service and Wood Green Animal Shelter. Councillor David Oliver, Fenland District Council’s portfolio holder responsible for community safety, said: “The Safety Zone events continue to be a huge success, with around 850 year five pupils taking part in them every year.

Teacher Dan Ryan, Year Five leader at Westwood Primary School, March, accompanied the pupils during their visit. He said: “We all found the day really useful and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. The staff and volunteers were brilliant with the children and all the activities were hands-on and very inclusive, with all of the children engaged. They had great fun and learned a lot in a short space of time.” Photo: Firefighter Matthew Wilson shows Westwood Primary School pupils how to dial 999 in the event of a fire

“They offer valuable life skills to our young people in a fun and interactive way, helping them to protect themselves and their families too. “Sessions are free and would not happen without the support of all the agencies involved, and the feedback from schools is always really positive.”

Home Interiors

Kitchen Trends – by Interior Designer, Yasmin Chopin Want to know what’s popular in the world of kitchens right now? There are designs with timeless appeal and others that offer state-ofthe-art contemporary style. Fitted and unfitted. No two kitchens are the same. You can spend a lot or a little, but every penny will be thoroughly considered; a new kitchen is not an impulse buy. So, to help you think about the priorities for your new kitchen here’s a short review of what’s happening in the kitchen showroom. COLOUR: All white kitchens are highly popular – they’re the most saved images on-line. This aspirational look satisfies the wish for a clean, easy to maintain, hygienic kitchen. Choose a fresh white kitchen from any supplier, in any style. Smooth and unfussy? Go handle-less. Smart and crisp? Add stainless steel door furniture. White is way out in front in terms of popularity, but other colours have character and warmth. Close in second place is the more masculine grey/black combo. And, you may be surprised, dark blue and heritage green follow up in third and fourth places. These two-colour options take on a traditional look when accessorised with gold, brass or bronze. APPLIANCES: Integrated appliances make the space neater and less fussy, but if you want to show off a space-age fridge, your designer can incorporate it as a free-standing item. Cooking ranges are rarely requested. Hobs, especially induction hobs, are steaming way – even professional cooks find these better than gas; easy to clean, immediate response, quicker cooking. Tip: Gas isn’t great for open plan kitchens because the flame accentuates smells. Wine cooling fridges are popular, and dish-washing drawers as well. To find space for them in your kitchen you could move out the washing machine and freezer. The boiling hot-water tap is seen by some as an essential, but not by all. And side-byside ovens (one being a full-size microwave oven)

are practical for home entertaining as you can get a lot of food ready simultaneously. NEW: We want to spend time in the kitchen, we want to make the kitchen central to family life. We want the kitchen to look, not like a kitchen, but homely, like a lounge. These unfitted units from SieMatic are designed to fulfil these needs simply and stylishly. Their sturdy elegant legs allow you to see the floor run under them. I love them, they’re the perfect answer to open-plan living. Photo credits: SieMatic

A NEW BOOK FOR EVERY YEAR 4 CHILD IN NORTH EAST CAMBRIDGESHIRE - By Steve Barclay MP

book donated, we will place a library token, which each child can take to their local library and take part in the Reading Agency’s Summer Reading Challenge.” Last year, local libraries recorded an 11 percent increase in children participating in the Summer Reading Challenge as a result of the scheme. Thanks to the kind donations from local businesses and the community, the MP raised enough money to buy 2500 books – one for every year 4 and year 5 child in the constituency.

T

his week, Steve Barclay MP launches his Read to Succeed Campaign which aims to raise enough money to buy a new reading book for every Year 4 child in North East Cambridgeshire. Steve first launched the campaign in 2016 after teachers raised the difficulty of encouraging children to read throughout the summer holidays which caused their literacy skills to suffer a dip after the school break. The initiative, supported by the Bishop of Ely, teachers, businesses and community groups, ensures that every Year 4 child in North East Cambridgeshire can have a new book to take home and keep before the holidays. This year group has been chosen because it is the age at which children often begin to read more independently. Steve Barclay MP said: “I launched the campaign three years ago after a number of teachers raised the issue that many children fail to make progress during the summer holiday, when they are out of school. Read to Succeed aims to help combat this. In the back of every

Local parent and teacher, Catherine Pearson said: “As both a parent and teacher I would like to thank Steve Barclay for his efforts with the Read to Succeed campaign and would encourage anyone who is able, to support this initiative. Fenland is a deprived area and anything that can be implemented to increase children's interest in and enjoyment of reading has to be worthwhile. Giving some children the opportunity to own a brand-new book for the first time and to experience the feel and smell of fresh pages can have such a positive impact. For other children, they may be introduced to a new author or different series of books which may open a new world to them. My own daughter was lucky enough to be able to choose a book on a topic she was interested in, World War II. Every year she has taken part in the library summer reading challenge and this year she very much enjoyed a trip to The Houses of Parliament as she was fortunate to be one of the prize winners." The Summer Reading Challenge encourages children to read six books of their choice throughout the school summer holiday and once completed, children will receive a medal

and a certificate at an awards ceremony. But this is not all, there are also prizes on offer for the schools with the most children who complete the Summer Reading Challenge. Prizes which can be won include: • Whole Class Film Screening at The Light Cinema (Wisbech) • Swimming pool party at any FDC swimming pool • Roald Dahl’s ‘Revolting Rhymes’ Workshop Session with Rhubarb Theatre • Fenland Bushcraft Workshop Session • Animal Handling Workshop with Lion Learners • Individual Prize Winners will also win a tour around the Houses of Parliament To continue the success of last year’s campaign Steve needs donations from local businesses and individuals to buy new books. This year Steve has partnered with the Norfolk Children’s Book Centre who are kindly supplying books at a reduced rate. Just £150 would be enough to purchase a new book for a whole class of

children in Fenland and any donations will make a positive contribution towards encouraging children to read throughout the summer break and fostering a life-long love for reading. Mr Barclay added: “I hope that constituents will join the Bishop of Ely, local head teachers and above all students, to allow for some children their very first book to own and for others the excitement of having something new to read over the summer. 1347 books will allow us to give every child in Year 4 a new book and should we receive more, we will be able to roll it out to further year groups.” Donations may be made payable directly to the Norfolk Children’s Book Centre via electronic transfer, cheque or telephone by Monday, June 25th. IT is well known that the UK population is ageing, with more people living longer lives than previously. There are now over 15 million people aged 60 or over, making up 23 per cent of the UK population. And where possible, often taking into account financial circumstances and health, many choose to continue to live in their own home; safe and secure surroundings they have worked their lives for. But with getting older also comes the need for additional help; perhaps to aid with mobility and generally getting around. It may come as no surprise that rogue traders work in this area too, often targeting the most vulnerable in the community. Scams including cold callers claiming to be from their victim’s GP surgery, asking for an appointment to discuss the person’s mobility needs, are not uncommon. The calls are targeted because in many cases, it is believed that unscrupulous firms are buying databases containing details of patients and their medical / mobility needs. Quite often they arrange to meet the person either in their own home or at a designated place – and will persuade them to buy mobility aids (which could include bath lifts, scooters or reclining chairs) at inflated prices. More often than not, these aids are unnecessary, inappropriate and always expensive. But as champions of the consumer, Safe Local Trades and Safe Local Services are able to offer recommended reliable trades/ companies, which elderly and less abled people can use with peace of mind. Our member skilled traders work across the PE area, and talk with customers and their families and loved ones about their needs and expectations; whether that be a low level shower room or wet room, ramps and rails, non slip flooring, hoists, door widening and much more. They will make an appointment to come and discuss your needs and deliver a first class service allowing the quality adaptions and modifications to help customers live a little more comfortable in their home. And did you know that as part of our Safe Local Services offering, we have signed specialist company Bentley Nursing Supplies - a retail outlet providing Mobility Aids, Nursing Equipment and Consumables and Continence Supplies to the general public. The company was formed in 1991, based on the need for a reliable supplier in the local area; offering free no obligation home or premises visit with demonstration and professional assessment on all equipment. So Remember: Never deal with cold callers – however persuasive they are. If you receive a call of this nature, always check with your GP surgery before agreeing to a visit. Likewise, any cold callers offering to carry out work on your property should be met with extreme caution. If you need a recommendation for a safe, approved local tradesperson, visit www.safelocaltrades.co.uk or call 0800 014 1832. Legal

Always use a Legal Professional for your LPA – by Bev Chase

A former Court of Protection judge, Denzil Lush, claimed last year that he would prefer the creation of a deputyship over a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA). I find this to be a strange comment because a person at risk of losing capacity cannot choose a Deputy; these powers can only be arranged by the court after they are no longer deemed to have capacity. It is true that LPAs are powerful and binding, but this is a reason why undertaking an LPA should only be done under the guidance of a legal professional, not to argue that the system is flawed. A legal professional will have the training required to give sound advice, and will also still be around in years to come. By choosing a professional, the client will also have some comeback should the forms be incorrect or something goes wrong with the registration process, whereas by using an unregulated practitioner there will be no comeback whatsoever. Personally, I would prefer a client to sign an LPA, providing they have capacity, than to go for a Deputyship order, not least because it is faster and less expensive. I want my clients to understand their decision; as such I always spend sufficient time with them explaining the risks that can arise when choosing the wrong attorney or from not making an LPA at all. I can also certify their forms when they are ready to make a decision on this. An unregulated LPA provider will not be able to act as certificate provider, unless they have known the client for a period of two years or more. This means that the client would also have to involve their doctor or friends to do so and, in my experience, many people would rather keep their personal

business private. By acting as certificate provider on these forms, I can also ensure that I see my client alone so I can be satisfied that they have full mental capacity and are not being coerced into signing the form against their will, and sign a statement to that effect. Fraser Dawbarns securely store your original LPA and send you two certified copies; we also monitor how many copies have been sent out. If a non-professional has nowhere to store the original LPA, they would likely send it to the client for safekeeping. If it is lost, this would result in new forms being prepared, with additional and unnecessary costs to the client. Unlike the ‘Enduring Powers of Attorney’ they replaced, the LPA has to be registered in order to be legally binding. Registering the form doesn’t mean that the Donor has lost mental capacity as per the EPA, but I always recommend to my clients that it is better for the forms to be registered once they have been signed as they will then be available for immediate use, should the Donor lose capacity. Considering the Office of the Public Guardian has at times taken three months to register LPAs, it is best to be prepared in case something urgent arises which the attorney needs to deal with. I personally feel that Mr Lush’s comments were unfair towards LPAs. As with everything, there is the risk of abuse but the procedure for putting an LPA in place is considerably more straightforward than appointing a Deputy – and you retain control. If you feel this is something you may need in the next few years, then by seeing a legal professional, you are limiting the opportunities for this to be misused.

Phil’s Ride

Community Spirit on Two Wheels! – by Holly-Jean

P

hilip Beeton, aged 50, from Southery, Norfolk was a fiancé, a father, a brother, a son and an all-round family man. In 2015 he was killed in a road traffic collision by a 20-tonne lorry tipper, while on his way home from an average day at work. He is remembered and loved by many.

In his memory there is an annual charity event called ‘Phil’s Ride’ held in Southery. It was set up back in 2016 by his fiancee, Jane, and really good friend, David Fletcher. The idea was that people would show up on motorcycles for a 100-mile-long trip or bicycles to participate in a 24-mile round trip. This was to celebrate his life and raise money for the East Anglian Air Ambulance who attended to Phil on the day of the crash, and saved the life of his nephew, who was also in the accident. Riding two wheels was close to his heart as he and his fiancee used to ride together. On the motorbike route there is one stop, Blakeney. This is a place where Jane and Phil used to visit regularly. Every penny raised on the day goes straight to the East Anglian Air Ambulance. On the first year in 2016 they didn’t expect many. There was no ‘sign up’ and no sponsorship forms to fill out and so, they had to wait and see how many showed up on the day. They were astonished by the turnout from such a small village and £6278 was raised in just one day in memory of Phil. The ride starts outside the Olde White Bell pub in Southery, which was Phil’s local pub. Jane, Phil’s fiancee, says that there is a ‘sense of family’ at ‘the Bell’.

34

D I S C O V E R I N G

March

Shocked by how much money they initially raised, the event was scheduled again for 2017 and the target was to raise just 1p over the previous amount. The turnout was even bigger and the emotion that Phil’s family and friends felt as they saw all of the people show up to support the EAAA and remember Phil was overwhelming. This event shows off such a beautiful sense of community, camaraderie and family. Everyone got goose bumps and clapped as the bikers departed and when they came back, the music started, the raffle was called, and pride was felt by all. On this day in 2017, £12,155.22 was raised through buckets and sponsorships. I was lucky enough to be a part of this event and I couldn’t be happier to support such an amazing cause. I think just by reading this article you can sense how special this event is. It is so easy to get involved and without a doubt it is so worth it. This year will be the third year of Phil’s Ride and although the target amount is just 1p over 2017’s money raised, I think you’ll agree it deserves so much more. You never know when you might need the air ambulance, please get on your bike and get involved! Phil's Ride 2018 will be on Sunday, August 26th and is open to anyone on two wheels who would like to take part. The team, comprising family and friends of Phil, are hoping to repeat the success of 2017 and also encourage children to take part in their own course, mapped out on Southery playing field. To find out more, donate and get involved in this incredible event, visit the website www.philsride.org JUNE 2018

Property

Top Tips on Getting your Home Ready to Rent - by Mike Ellis

Becoming a landlord is nothing to be taken lightly, so avoid the pitfalls by following these three simple steps: 1

Seek out a good local lettings agent. Especially for inexperienced landlords, a good lettings agent can be worth their weight in gold. Responsibilities include recommending the monthly rent to charge, advertising your property, finding and screening tenants, drawing up contracts and other documents, taking the deposit and conducting the inventory when your tenants move in.

2

Think about the type of tenants you want. This will depend on the size of your property but you may have your own opinions too. Are you happy with small children, for example? Or a family with

36

D I S C O V E R I N G

March

three cars? What about if tenants work from home or work nights? And will you allow smokers or pets? Give your lettings agent an idea of who you are looking for and request to meet them before you sign the contract.

3

Make your home into a blank canvas. Homes are personal to their occupants so if you want your property to appeal to as many tenants as possible, it needs to be neutral. Give walls (and ceilings) a lick of white paint and lay reasonably- priced flooring or one carpet throughout. If you are renting your home furnished, remove any items that are old and tired, not fit for purpose – or are just an ‘acquired taste’.

Your Garden

June Gardening Tips What an awful start we had to May; let’s hope June starts with sunny, warm weather. Although we see it as a summer month, it can often disappoint. However, as we approach Midsummer’s Day, the nights are lighter which gives us more time in the garden, especially if you go out to work. I remember my father digging until it was too dark to see! June is one of the busiest months of the year for the vegetable gardener: there are crops to plant, sow, and harvest, weeding, watering, feeding, getting rid of pests – the list seems never-ending. You really do need to keep on top of all these jobs to get the best out of your plot. Not only will your crops benefit from the longer sunnier days, so will the weeds! Regular hoeing is the best way to keep them at bay, or spreading mulch around the plants, or even growing through weed-suppressant membrane –good for squashes and courgettes. Garden pests can have a devastating effect on crops and, with the latest concerns over chemical pest control, an interesting alternative is using nematodes. Beneficial nematodes as pest control will attack soil-borne insect pests with no harmful effects on earthworms, plants, animals or humans, making it an environmentally friendly solution. You can use water-in nematodes against the following:• Slugs, ant nests, (dependent on soil temperature). • Leatherjackets, chafer grubs (in April and October, to coincide with vulnerable parts of their life cycles). • Carrot fly, cabbage root fly, cutworms, onion fly, sciarid fly, caterpillars, gooseberry sawfly, thrips and codling moth - (all can be attacked with a single product).

sure you harden them off before planting out in their final position. • Thin out seedlings, and plant others in their final growing positions. • Earth up potatoes and, towards the end of the month, harvest earlies. • Cut down broad beans and peas just above the surface, and use for compost but leave the roots in the ground as a good source of nitrogen. • Once you are sure that frosts are over, you can plant out the more tender crops such as aubergines, peppers, chillies, courgettes, marrows and squashes. • Succession sow beetroot, salad crops, carrots and, later in the month, Florence fennel. Traditionally, Florence fennel is sown after the longest day, June 21st, as it is less likely to bolt: sowing in succession is a good idea. If the weather is dry, then water your seed drills well before sowing – this way the young plants will develop a good root system. • Last chance to sow runner beans. • Brussels sprouts, leeks, sprouting broccoli and the last of the summer, autumn and red cabbages and the first of winter cabbages can also be planted. Protect carrots with insect-proof netting, and net brassicas to deter pigeons.

Happy planting!

There are plenty of sites on the Internet where you can find further information on nematodes and where to purchase them. Jobs to do:• Plant out vegetables that you have grown from seed, but make

Technology

Don’t Become the Victim of a Scammer If a stranger knocked on your door and said he was from the Inland Revenue and that you were due a £500/£1000/£3000 tax rebate but that he needed your bank account details and the three-digit verification code from the rear of your card, would you give it to him or her? Of course not. You would probably slam the door in their face and then make a phone call to the Police for good measure. Alternatively, what if another stranger knocked on your door and told you that you are having problems with your internet connection (and who doesn’t have problems with their internet connection at times!) but that he/she would have to come in, sit down at your computer and ‘make some changes’ to resolve your problem. Once again, I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t allow them in. However, if you were to receive an email made up to ‘look’ like it was from BT/Sky/Virgin/TalkTalk/ HMRC it would amaze you to learn just how many people respond to these emails with all the information they need to raid your bank account. The other version of this scam is when you receive a phone call asking for the same information and they ‘need access to your laptop’ to fix the problem. The REALLY savvy people just hang up on the caller, because they realise that their service provider would NEVER do this and, more importantly, would NEVER need access to your computer. Some people that think they are savvy in these things say ‘OK, but I’ll call you back’. When they hang up the phone the caller stays on the line, passes it to another person and when you ‘call’ your service provider they just ‘pretend’ to answer the phone and continue the conversation from where it was left off. As part of their ‘help’ they will install some software which allows them full control over your computer. This usually includes some tracking software, some virus software and, rather than spend the time hunting your computer for the information they want, they will then charge a small ‘fee’, obtain your card/ bank details and, immediately, you are a few hundred pounds lighter. In fact, in some of the cases I have seen in recent weeks people have had ‘£thousands’ taken from their bank account and in a large number of cases, the account has

been emptied of all monies. This is the point the bank realises something is wrong. You then have the inconvenience of stopping your cards, paying to have your computer ‘cleaned’ of everything they have installed – when all you had to do was ignore the mail in the first place. Finally, what I find especially sad is the people who really are unaware of these types of scams and just blithely provide the information requested. So, if you think you know someone who is unaware of these scams then do, please, cut this out and pass it on to them with an explanation.

SALE ON FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOP COMPUTERS Until the end of June all refurbished laptops are discounted by £50.

I now supply a very extensive range of desktops. All carry a one-year warranty. All have i5 processors @ 3.2 GHz. Alternatively, if you want an incredible ‘top of the range’ gaming machine, this can be built for you at £1100 (at least £1800 of value). So, do compare my prices and, remember, your computer will be built to your specification and comes with the highest level of support as expected from AA Whittlesey Computers Ltd. Village Life

Arthur John Green – by Jayne Whytock

A

rthur John Green (always known as John) was born at Hook, which was a small hamlet just outside Wimblington on June 8th, 1941. His parents were Fred and Edna Green. Fred was a farm foreman for Mr Sid Coulson and Edna was a housewife.

John had an idyllic childhood with his two sisters Jenny and Margaret. He was a happy and intelligent boy. Whilst attending Thomas Eaton School he took the 11+ exam and passed with flying colours. At this time, he was offered a scholarship as a boarder at Christ’s Hospital School in Horsham, Sussex. In the Autumn of 1952 he moved to Sussex to start the next phase of his education. Here he excelled at all sports and was a wonderful pupil loved by the staff and fellow pupils. Although John was a boarder he returned home to Wimblington during school holidays and it was whilst back in the village for the Easter break in 1954 that tragedy struck. It was on April 12th at around 6pm that John decided to take his Mum’s bike and cycle to see his friend on the main Doddington Road. As he was going up Chapel Lane he was involved in an accident with a car and tragically died of his injuries. John’s sister Jenny was playing out in the village with a friend when the accident happened. She can clearly remember being told by a policeman on his bike that she should go home immediately. Not knowing what had happened, Jenny raced home to be told the tragic news. The news quickly spread and the whole village went into shock and mourning. The family were supported by countless letters and cards of sympathy and support. The funeral was held at 2.30pm on Saturday April 17th at the Methodist Church, Wimblington, where John had taken an active part in services as a choirboy. Most village residents attended and as the funeral made its way through the village, trains were stopped at the station to allow the cortege

It was whilst back in the village for the Easter break in 1954 that tragedy struck to proceed without having to stop. The village policeman halted all traffic to allow the many mourners to go from the chapel to the churchyard. Ahead of the hearse was a lorry laden with floral tributes including one of John’s school crests bearing the names of the Isle of Ely boys who also attended the school. The inquest concluded that the car driver was exonerated of all blame and the verdict was an accidental death. All information including the photo has kindly been shared by Mrs Jenny Brown (nee Green) – John’s sister.

anxiety and learning became major issues, it was truly heart-breaking to see Liam in such distress. “Naturally we were all very concerned and wanted to help Liam but for Liam's grandad it had a much greater significance, he too had suffered very similar experiences when he was a child. “Grandad is a very determined character and problem solver, being retired with time on his hands it gave him the opportunity to do lots of research in our quest to help Liam.” She added that the research soon lead to Autism as a possible cause for Liam's issues and after many months and many hurdles in 2017 it was finally diagnosed that Liam had Autistic Spectrum Disorder (Asperger’s).

FAMILY DUO’S COAST-TO-COAST CHARITY CYCLE TRIP

A young Ramsey Asperger’s sufferer is planning an epic coast-to-coast cycling trip to raise money for the Autism Research Trust. Liam Rayment (8) will cycle with his grandad David Thorburn from Whitehaven, Cumbria to Roker, Sunderland, a distance of 135 miles. Starting on Wednesday, June 27th they will cycle around 35 miles per day travelling through the Lake District, the Pennines and Durham Dales, finishing on Saturday, June 30th. The route, which will involve 10,500ft of climbing, will raise funds to support research conducted at the Autism Research Centre at Cambridge University. The duo will be supported on the trip by Liam’s mum Gemma and nana Mary. Gemma said: “Autism can be a very difficult thing to accept, understand or talk about for individuals and families who are affected and we as a family want to raise awareness, help research and offer support. “We first started to notice things about Liam when he was very young, fear of certain noises (church bells, aeroplanes flying over etc), his speech development was late and when he started school 52

It was during his research into Asperger’s that David began to notice more and more things that he could relate to and offered answers to the many problems he had faced throughout his life, every time he read something about Asperger’s it was like reading his own personal profile. It was soon very clear that he too had Asperger’s and so it was that he set about getting an assessment to confirm his own diagnosis, 18 months later in March 2018 he got the official diagnosis. Gemma added: “Liam and grandad share a very special relationship, they are like best buddies which we all thought was just shared interests and the usual stuff that grandads and grandsons do but now it's clear that the common thread is Asperger’s. “Although they have differences in character they can relate to each other in so many ways and grandad is able to offer guidance and support to both Liam and the family using his life experiences and knowledge of Asperger’s.” David (61) has been a keen cyclist for many years and completed a solo cycle ride from Land’s End to John O'Groats in 2016 so the coast to coast is well within his capabilities but for Liam who is new to long distance cycling the challenge will be huge both physically and mentally. If you would like to donate please log-on to their JustGiving page at www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/LiamandGrandad You can also follow their story via JustGiving, Facebook & Twitter.

“I’d also like to thank the trained pilots from Chatteris Cycling Club; they were excellent and made the riders feel safe and at ease.” Anyone wishing to take part in the tandem cycling project, or any other activities through Cam Sight, can contact Samantha Wool on 07498 505687 or email: sam@camsight.org.uk The charity is also looking for volunteers to get involved with the project, and others, such as its befriending scheme, which provides friendship and support to those with low vision at their home or out in the community.

RIDERS SADDLE UP AT TANDEM CYCLING TASTER Visually impaired residents in Fenland can now enjoy biking without boundaries thanks to the launch of a tandem cycling project. Following the success of the project in Cambridge, sight loss charity Cam Sight is rolling it out across the district with support from Fenland District Council’s Active Fenland team. The first tandem cycling taster session was held recently in March when three people with low vision and blindness took to the road, riding in tandem with trained volunteer ‘pilots’ from Chatteris Cycling Club. Cam Sight’s community volunteer support coordinator Samantha Wool, who organised the event, said: “The taster was a great success, enabling people living in Fenland with low vision and blindness to enjoy a bike ride with assistance from trained pilots. It was also a great opportunity to raise awareness of the project and we have since been contacted by a number of people keen to get involved.”

COME AND ENJOY THE SOAP BOX DERBY March Lions will be staging its soap box derby as part of this month’s Summer Festival weekend. Competitors will be taking part in the event at 2pm on Sunday, June 10th on West End Park, March. Following last year’s success, the Lions are returning for a second time to stage a fun afternoon for all the family to enjoy, so they say bring the kids and a picnic then sit back and watch the fun as competitors go around the ‘figure of eight’ track. There are three age groups taking part; 8-11 years, 12-17 years and 18 upwards with cups being presented to the winners and shields to the runnersup in all age groups, plus best presented soapbox. Further details and entry forms are available from lynnedrewett5@gmail.com

The project aims to provide opportunities for blind and visually impaired people to improve their health and fitness, as well as confidence with getting out and about. Ms Wool said: “Not only will people gain increased health and physical fitness, but they will also grow in confidence and self-esteem, enjoy the sense of achievement and the social interaction with volunteers and other visually impaired cyclists.” Cllr Mark Buckton, Fenland District Council’s portfolio holder for leisure, who had a go at tandem cycling during the taster session, said: “I think this is a fantastic initiative from Cam Sight that will not only enable visually impaired people to enjoy something that the rest of us take for granted, but also has the real potential to change people’s lives. n the evening of October 5th, 1898, Mr Jeffs left his traction engine in a field near 'Hatchwoods' in Knight's End. The Cambridgeshire Times newspaper reported that the engine had been left with a fire and that it didn't take long to get steam up.

It stated that it was ''impudently'' driven through the town at ''high speed''. The following week's issue had a letter from a local resident who claimed to have been woken up by a terrific rumbling noise and wondered if it was an earthquake but had since found that it was a runaway traction engine. No-one had been able to find out who was with it although it had travelled more than two miles. It had gone down the High Street, had passed the Police Station and continued down Station Road where the ‘Station Gates’ were politely opened for it to pass. On it went past the gates in Elm Road until it was safely left in a grass field. A second correspondent using a pseudonym 'RATS' was moved to poetry. A Traction Engine Frolic in March A ‘Traction’ one night woke up from his sleep, Saying, now for a frolic and now for a leap, Now for a madcap galloping chase, I'll make a stir in this blooming place.

So, away he went puffing towards the old town, Right past the Old Church, and Avenue down. The people en route were aroused from their sleep, and wondering faces from windows did peep. But heedless of all this commotion and fright, The Engine sped showing never a light, No flagman preceded to hinder or stay His triumphal march through the town and away. But, strangest of all and sad to relate, No 'Bobby' appeared to expostulate Or demand explanation or threaten a summons, Now, Sir, don't you think that the rummest of rum'uns! Next morning, excitement was rife when the news Of the engine's escape was proved not a ruse; And people are asking, with minds ill at ease, ''When that Engine went through, where were the Police?'' The Cambridgeshire Times concluded that ''Suspicions have been aroused as to who was the perpetrator of the deed,'' but it seems that no-one was apprehended. Museum Opening Hours are 10.30am-3.30pm, Wednesday and Saturday. Entry is Free.
