Introduction

Welcome to Your December Issue.

A very warm welcome to this, our last edition of 2017. December is a time for both reflection on what’s gone and anticipation for what’s round the corner of the new year. We can think about what we’ve achieved; those places we’ve visited and new people who may have come into our lives; others who we’ll see no more, but whose memory will remain strong. I prefer to look forward, though, and those new year resolutions are already in the planning stage! In the meantime, on behalf of all of the team here, my sincere thanks go out to everyone who has helped us in any way this year, especially our advertisers and contributors, with their regular features, wonderful advice and suggestions. All the very best to you all for Christmas and for 2018 – good luck, but most importantly, good health!

Claire x

Another Christmas fast approaching and we hope that you will be able to enter our £50 Novelty Hunt Competition, and enter into the true Christmas spirit, however, and wherever, your Christmas carousing may take you. Our team of contributors continue to ensure that your favourite magazine is full of interesting features, advice and information to make your lead-up to Christmas as enjoyable as possible. And, as 2017 disappears over the horizon, I’ll share one of my favourite one-liners of this year, this from the Irish comedian, Jimeoin: “I’m rubbish with names. It’s not my fault, it’s a condition. There’s a name for it...” Enjoy the read, and all the very best for 2018.

“What goes round, comes around” is an idiom that could easily apply to the recent resurgence in interest in vinyl records, whether they be 45s or L.P.s. How many of us, I wonder, stashed away our prized collection in the garage or attic, hardly aware that, before long, teenage offspring would be pawing over them, having already picked up a “record player”, on which they can now discover the “real” sound, scratches ’n’ all? Now, things are looking up in our area. Market Deeping Records have already been in business since 2009, trading in the Market Deeping Antiques and Craft Centre, (Unit 28/at the back of the shop), 50-56 High Street, Market Deeping, PE6 8EB. Local enthusiast, Dave, owns the wall-to-wall collection of vintage vinyl, but that’s not all!

Callows B A R B E R S

Dave has recently opened a second shop, this one above Callows, the long-established barbers, at 7 Market Place, Market Deeping. In Dave’s words, “In my vast and ever-expanding stock, across both shops, I have literally millions of vintage vinyl records on LP, 12” and 7” singles, spanning all genres from Rock ’N’ Roll, Jazz, Folk, Rock, 80s, Indie, New Wave and more! If vintage vinyl is your thing, then please come and support an independent brand and treat yourself. After buying all your vinyl, remember to pop downstairs to see Penny at Callows for a haircut, beard trim and a cuppa in the newly decorated barbers shop. I wish to thank all my loyal and regular customers of the last eight years and welcome all my new customers for the years to come.”

Action Beats Intention! (Over one stone weight loss in eight weeks!) by Steve Weston

A

s promised in the November issue, we can now share with you the progress of Sarah Asplin, one of our three challengers who had not stepped into a gym before, until being invited to take the part in the Empire Gym Three Month Challenge. Sarah started her fitness programme in September, one month later than Julie Sallis and Claire Hadley, whose three month challenges ended on November 18th. Both Julie and Claire have achieved significant improvements in cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, muscular endurance and flexibility. We will compare their final challenge measurements in the January issue. Sarah Asplin Sarah’s goal was to lose weight and reduce blood pressure and, two months into her challenge, she is flying. Her first set of comparison measurements is impressive, to say the least! Cardiovascular efficiency - Improved by 13% Body composition (Body fat %) – Reduced by 11% combination which reduces body fat, whilst improving heart and lung function. This increases muscle mass and strength, helping to condition the body’s connective tissues. These physiological changes will improve her body’s shape, posture, joint stability and balance.

Body mass index – Down by 8% Muscle strength – Increased by 28% Flexibility – Improved by 17.5%

We know that calories consumed must not be greater than calories expended, if we are to prevent weight gain. However, dieting alone is not the answer, as weight drops temporarily but comes back, often accompanied by a few unwelcome additional pounds. A focus on dieting alone can place the individual under stress which can cause binge eating, as food becomes the centre of a person’s life, and we end up measuring our worth and health in kilogrammes and pounds!

Systolic blood pressure – Down by 13% Diastolic blood pressure – Down by 17% Resting heart rate – Down by 22% Weight – Reduced by 8% Sarah epitomises commitment and determination, and demonstrates what can be achieved with a positive mind set. Initially reluctant to step into a gym, her dogged determination has brought her quickly to the point where results are being seen and, more importantly, being felt. Sarah has lost 8kg (17lb 10oz) in weight since starting her programme on September 21st, (a healthy reduction rate of 1.14kg (2.5lb) per week). Sarah’s impressive weight reduction is due to good diet control and a structured increase in activity levels, a

Sarah is proof positive that regular exercise, with good diet balance, makes your heart and bones stronger, lowers your blood pressure, keeps your weight under control and reduces feelings of anxiety and depression. While you’re boosting your energy levels, oxygen capacity, muscle tone and general fitness, a side benefit is an increase in selfesteem. Just the success of creating an exercise plan and sticking to it allows you to enjoy a sense of achievement. Getting a move on is good for your body and mind. Our

challengers have proven that it is possible to lose weight and improve levels of fitness by increasing activity whilst consuming a balanced diet, based upon a daily calorie intake calculated to be just below the individual’s Basal Metabolic Rate (the energy required simply to exist), plus the calories required to fuel your daily activities. Everyone is different, and Empire Gym can provide the personal information you require to help you achieve your desired fitness level and body shape, so call in to see us and don’t let weight weigh you down!

• Irritability. • Feelings of despair, guilt and worthlessness. • Feeling lethargic (lacking in energy) and sleepy during the day. • Sleeping for longer than normal and finding it hard to get up in the morning.

Empire Gym Gift Vouchers (A gift of fitness for Christmas) What’s better to offer your loved ones for Christmas than the gift of fitness? Empire Gym gift vouchers are available from our reception desk, starting at £10 and rising in increments of £5 (i.e. £15, £20, etc.) They can be redeemed for gym memberships, personal training, fitness classes, sun bed sessions, protein powders and bars.

• Craving carbohydrates and gaining weight. The exact cause of SAD isn’t fully understood, but it is often linked to reduced exposure to sunlight during the shorter autumn and winter days, causing a deficiency of Vitamin D.

Christmas Membership Offer “Why wait until the New Year to buy your gym membership? Now is a good time to resolve to be fitter and healthier in 2018. New members enrolling on a minimum three month agreement before December 24th, 2017 will benefit from the Empire Gym concession rate. Yes, that’s right, every new member joining between now and Christmas Eve on a minimum three month agreement will enjoy membership at £35.00 per month. Remember, membership at Empire Gym includes access to forty fitness classes each month, all free to members. Don’t be SAD at Christmas Seasonal affective disorder (SAD), also called winter depression or winter blues, is a mood disorder, in which people who have normal mental health throughout most of the year, exhibit depressive symptoms at the same time each year, most commonly in the winter. Symptoms of SAD can include: (courtesy of nhs.uk)

The Ergoline Sun Angel at Empire Gym stimulates the production of Vitamin D by controlling the interaction between UVa and UVb light, harnessing the components that are most effective in promoting the tanning process. The UV spectrum of the Sun Angel is as unique as the individual using it, due to its innovative sensor technology, designed to provide an optimal tanning environment, while significantly reducing the risk of overexposure. The Ergoline Sun Angel is in a class of its own. Why not take advantage of our seasonal offers? A Gym day pass, plus a Sun Angel tanning session, for £15.00 (normal price £21.00). Or Twelve Sun Angel tanning sessions for £100.00 (normal price £144.00). Happy Christmas. See you in the gym?

• A persistent low mood.

How to Survive the Festive Season

by Nicole Woodcock, Hummingbird Hypnotherapy

D

ecember - that wonderful time of year, festive lights going up everywhere, decorations, shops selling Christmas food, extra hustle and bustle.... I have to admit I do love Christmas, particularly sat, all warm and cosy, watching a festive film. For more and more of us though, it becomes quite stressful. Finances take a pinch, lots more to do, extra shopping, fitting in all the relatives and not upsetting anyone. It can be quite overwhelming. Add the demands of working schedules and day-to-day stresses, and it can become just too much. Stress has a huge impact, not only on how we feel mentally, but also on how our body reacts physically. Add a few extra factors and, come Christmas, we can be heading into crazy town before we know it. So how can we enjoy the festive season? How can we achieve what we want to … and remain as cool as a cucumber? • Prioritise what’s important to you. • Write down all those things you want to achieve and off-load any that someone else can do, such as your partner or the children. • Take time out for yourself. Factor even just ten minutes into your week to stop, re-focus and breathe. • Get all your gifts and wrapping complete a week before the event. • Ask others to help at home and become a team – “Team Christmas”! Give everyone a job that needs doing to ensure that you’re not rushing.

• Remember when you start to feel overwhelmed, stop. Ask yourself what you can do differently right now to slow things down and enjoy it. When we enjoy events, jobs or daily tasks, we feel rewarded by a chemical in the brain, known as serotonin. Focusing on us making things happy allows a controlled state of mind, we achieve more and feel much better for it. If you are struggling with stress, anxiety or feeling generally overwhelmed, have you ever thought about trying hypnotherapy? At Hummingbird Hypnotherapy in Bourne, we focus on the good stuff. Those things you want to achieve, the positive outcomes working towards a positive future. If this is something of interest and you would like to know more, please get in touch. All new clients are offered a free initial consultation to talk about how hypnotherapy works and, more importantly, how I can help you create that positive mindset for an awesome future! Matelia Beauty – Market Deeping’s Latest Star Attraction Matilda and Amelia, young daughters of Claire Tomlinson, are at the heart of her exciting new beauty business in Market Deeping. Last year, Claire left a successful legal career spanning over a decade enabling her to spend more quality time with her family and to follow her dreams and indulge in her lifelong passion for beauty, which dates back to her years competing as a ballroom dancer and sharing the floor with many of the faces seen on the popular TV show Strictly Come Dancing. Meanwhile, MATilda and AmELIA’s names combine to provide Claire with her catchy business moniker. Claire has a close working relationship with and shares premises with good friend Lisa Greenwood, the owner of Saxbys Hair & Beauty in the centre of Market Deeping (but both are run as separate businesses). Claire spent several months preparing to launch Matelia Beauty, ensuring that the perfectionist within her won the day, and her clients now benefit from sumptuous surrounds, captivating aromas and an overwhelming sense of quality, emanating from such a relaxing atmosphere. Since opening last month, Claire has been overwhelmed by the positive response and popularity of her treatments and products. In particular, Claire’s “lash lift” (a natural lash enhancement treatment) is the talk of the town. The results speak for themselves – just look at the pictures! Amongst the impressive range of treatments available are: “Fabulous Facials”, (using products by Eve Taylor (London) - the original aromatherapy skincare brand); “Breathtaking Body Treatments”, (massages, including the attractively topical “Yuletide De-Stress Treatment”!); “Heavenly Hands and Flawless Feet”, (manicures and pedicures); “Gorgeous Gel”, (nail treatment, using O.P.I. GelColor); “Luscious Lashes and Beautiful Brows” (tinting and “lash lift”); “Wondrous Waxing”, (face, body and “intimate”); and “Marvellous Male Grooming”, (including eyebrow tidy, back and chest wax, eh, fellas?) Claire has been driven by the desire to ensure that Matelia Beauty becomes synonymous with “Quality”. She is proud to use and stock an extensive range of products from the local, award winning pioneer of modern aromatherapy, Eve Taylor (London), which combine excellent quality with affordability. (Those awesome Aromawax Candles are also available, for that special Christmas treat, while you’re there!) For hands and feet, Claire uses O.P.I – the world’s leading manufacturer of professional hand, foot and nail care products – and Magpie Glitter for that extra little Christmas sparkle! For those hunting for the perfect gift for their loved ones this Christmas, beauty goodies can be purchased in the salon.

Claire was attentive and dedicated to provide the best possible service in a beautifully relaxing and tranquil environment. We loved the gorgeous aromatherapy candles which were burning throughout. A real treat! We’re already planning our next visit! “– Natasha S “I can’t recommend Matelia Beauty enough. I’ve been a nail biter my whole life and always lacked self-confidence. Gobbled It All Up?

t’s the time of year for eating extra chocolates and mince pies, and drinking more alcohol, so it’s no surprise that we often stagger into the new year with a tighter waist band. The average person can consume 6000-7000 calories on Christmas Day alone! That doesn’t include the parties leading up to Christmas or Boxing Day or New Year…it is just on Christmas Day!!! Just think …7000 calories is about 1kg of weight! Whilst we often think that we will “work it off” in January, burning off the extra Christmas calories is an Olympic task and would take more than 2,000 laps of the velodrome! In fact, it would take Victoria Pendleton 2,177 laps at the Olympic Velodrome to shift all 7000 calories. Meanwhile, cycling hero Sir Bradley Wiggins would have to ride 41 miles, the distance from London to Southend, to burn off the 1,500 calories found in an average Christmas dinner alone.

BREAKDOWN OF 6,000 CHRISTMAS CALORIES Breakfast Smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel – 210 calories Starter Prawn cocktail – 200 calories Main Christmas dinner – 1,500 calories Seconds – 500 calories

The problem is not what you do between Christmas and the New Year, it’s what you do between New Year and Christmas that counts! The secret is to get back into your healthy eating and exercise regime straight away. Enjoy your day, but don’t be fooled into eating up the left overs and massaging bad habits until the middle of January! You can get ahead of the game by starting your thirty minute exercise programme now, so you are well prepared for the new year. Our realistic dietary advice and thirty minute workouts are designed to fit into your busy lifestyle for maximum results in minimum time. Call us on 01778 423923 for a free trial.

Rose Lodge Care Home rated ‘GOOD’ in ALL AREAS Managers and staff at Rose Lodge Care Home in Market Deeping were delighted with their overall ‘Good’ rating, following a recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The report rated the care home “good” in all areas, highlighting that people were involved in decisions about their care wherever possible, and that staff took time to listen to people’s choices and responded to these appropriately. “We are very pleased with the report findings”, said Alykhan Kachra, Managing Director of Country Court Care. “The staff team here go the extra mile every day to create a welcoming and homely environment for our residents”. The report noted that people and their loved ones spoke highly of Home Manager, Natalie White, and how she ran the home, with one relative saying, “She’s on the ball and will do anything to oblige you.” People were complimentary about the activities available to them at Rose Lodge. One person said, “They have things on often like quizzes and get entertainers in now and then. They took me in a wheelchair round the town the other day.” People’s loved ones spoke highly of the activities available. One relative said, “All the activity girls are fantastic. A great team and they gel well. The fun and games we have here are amazing. They’re a jolly lot and everyone is involved and gets attention. They put the residents’ needs first, all the time.”

Seasonal Delights with Amy at Vine House Farm Citrus fruits are at their best this time of year & our favourite is the blood orange. Smaller than other types of oranges with a thick skin often with a reddish hue. The inside flesh can be dark pink or even dark blood red, which gives them their name. The delicious raspberry edge to their flavour makes a striking addition to a fruit salad or try mixed with grated carrot for an unusual salad to brighten your lunchtime. Blood oranges are usually slightly sweeter than regular oranges so makes tasty freshly squeezed orange juice too.

ENJOY.... KALE One of the green veg stars is kale. It’s very versatile & can be steamed, boiled, baked, or stir fried. For a simple side dish, try quickly sautéing with garlic, salt, & pepper until wilted. Great in soups & stews because its sturdy leaves hold up well to boiling & adds a pop of colour & texture. Also very nutritious in a smoothie!

Empire Gym support Rotary`s Sponsored Weight Loss for the Nepal Remote Village Trust Appeal

John Slimmon, a member of The Rotary Club of the Deepings, is hoping that, while the pounds drop off him, other pounds will be coming his way, in the form of sponsorship. Here, he explains his ambitious plans: “The challenge is for me to lose three stone in one Rotary Year and the members of the Rotary Club of the Deepings are sponsoring me in my quest. The Empire Gym in Market Deeping has given so much support, I cannot thank them enough, and the Gym owner, Steve Weston, has also sponsored me. The funds raised will help provide solar panels in a school in a remote area of Nepal, thus allowing the children to have the use of an e-library to further their education. This Rotary Year ends on June 30th 2018.....WISH ME LUCK!”

Young at Heart Club – Cakes and Cash for Macmillan Cancer Support

Market Deeping’s Young at Heart Social Club recently held a fund-raising event, where coffee and cakes were very much in evidence, and Macmillan Cancer Support were the beneficiaries, to the impressive tune of £327.60. Over fifty people were gathered to enjoy not just the refreshments and friendly company provided, but also the tombola. The “tallest cake” competition, with its £20 prize, was won by Mrs Maud Ainger. On behalf of the Young at Heart Club, Trisha Smith sends a big thank you to everyone who helped make it such an enjoyable and successful event, especially those who kindly donated all the cakes and prizes, for such a worthy cause.

Will & Probate Services

Can I Make my Own Will? by Nick Ash, Managing Director

One of the questions that I am asked most often is: Can I make my own will? The answer I always give is the same: Yes you can ‌ as long as you follow the rules. Of course, it is free too, which answers the second of our frequently asked questions: Can I make my will for free? The real question that you should be asking, though, is: Should I make my own will? There is no question that, for some people, it is possible to do it. If your circumstances are simple, and you want to pass everything to a spouse, then you could give it a go. Unfortunately, the statistics still show that even this is a high-risk strategy, with over a third of homemade wills failing, as they go through the probate process, leading to costly proceedings to remedy the problems.

If your circumstances are more complex, with children who need guardians, or if you are in a second relationship, then a homemade will could be plain dangerous. It could lead to challenges, disputes and family breakdown after you have passed away. So, we come to the inevitable answer: Yes, you can make your own will. But why would you? A professionally drafted will, with good advice at the time you make it, will almost always be better than a homemade will from the likes of W. H. Smiths. The savings, in terms of heartache and costs after you have passed away, almost always outweigh the relatively small cost of doing it properly in the first place. So, if now is time to make your will, give us a call and we will help you write the right will for you.

Mayor Matthew Lee, Leader of South Kesteven Council, has announced that money has been found to provide the Deepings with a new leisure centre, together with a new office building, similar to Eventus, (on the Northfields industrial estate). Hopefully, this will bring employment to the town. The new leisure centre will be an asset, but it is important that residents state where they think it should be built. The Town Council would like to hear your views on this.

Words from the Mayor of Market Deeping Councillor Mrs Pauline Redshaw to keep all the tolls and taxes. In the 19th Century, the Crown lands of Deeping were sold.

South Kesteven District Council is anxious to encourage and promote retail business in the Deepings, together with the weekly market. It is important that the market is supported, as it is a friendly place, with stall holders happy to help.

Remembrance. Once again, the town has recognised the sacrifice of the service men and women who gave their lives to protect our country. Ceremonies were held on the Riverside Park and The Council joined with the British Legion and the uniformed organisations at the Remembrance service at St Guthlac’s Church.

Market Deeping’s Market Charter dates back to 1220 when Henry III granted it to one William Briwer of Bourn, a relation of the Wake family, in return for a palfrey, (a horse for everyday riding as opposed to a heavy horse for a knight to ride).

By the time you read this, the Christmas Market will have taken place. A huge thank you to the businesses who supported the Mayor’s Tombola by giving prizes, and to all who came and helped by manning road closures, setting up the market stalls and clearing away. The Council hopes the stall holders had a successful day. The Council is anxious that the new Christmas lights have met with approval!

During the reign of Edward III, Thomas Wake married Blanche, (daughter of Henry Plantagenet). When he died, Margaret of Kent became his heir. When she died, her daughter Joan, known as The Lady of Wake, inherited the Manor of Deeping. Now known as Joan of Kent, Joan was received well in Royal circles, and the story of her dropping her garter, which was retrieved by the king, while dancing, was said to influence the forming of the “Order of the Garter”. Joan’s beauty dazzled the king’s son, Edward, the Black Prince. They were married and had a son who succeeded to the throne as Richard II. Joan of Kent never became queen but she was the first Princess of Wales. On her marriage, all her estates became the property of the Crown. In the reign of Elizabeth I, Lord Burghley managed the estate and was able

The Council is looking forward to seeing you at the Carol Singing Event which will take place in the Market Place on Tuesday December 19th at 7pm, where we will be welcoming The Whittlesey Wind Ensemble to play for us. Afterwards, mulled wine and mince pies will be served in the Town Hall, and I hope to meet you there. I wish you and yours a Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

Power-Brush Deep Clean Service from 3D Grass We all know how a deep clean of our carpets freshens them and removes ingrained dirt. ArtiďŹ cial grass is an outdoor carpet and should be treated in the same way. It is advisable to have a deep clean annually to keep it fresh, clean and looking great. Although you may remove leaves and things you see on the surface, and regularly spray a disinfectant on the surface (especially all you pet owners out there) there is, like with your indoor carpets, dirt that gets ingrained. The cost is very similar to a deep clean of your indoor carpets and is well worth the regular maintenance. Here at 3D Grass, we will come out to you to give your artiďŹ cial grass that deep clean, with our sophisticated machine and chemicals, and we offer a friendly and very competitive service. Call us on 01733 390411 for a no-obligation quote.

Consumer Advice

Make sure your Christmas stays Merry – not Miserable! “ ‘Tis the season to be jolly” – presents to buy and proudly display under a beautifully decorated tree. However, it may not just be the intended receiver of the gift who takes a shine to the pile of expensive goodies. Christmas is a time when many of us let our guard down, among the excitement leading up to the big day. For opportunist thieves, visible presents under the tree, open car boots full of shopping while loads are being taken into the house, and even the possibility of an unlocked garage, are rich pickings which can turn your Christmas from being “Merry” into “Miserable”! Equally, flaws in home security while out and about visiting friends and family are a beacon to thieves – so always remember to check your alarm and never leave doors, windows or garages unlocked.

Some tips for a safe and happy festive season: Don’t leave presents in full view – either in the home or on the back seat of the car.

Shorter days mean longer time for thieves to be in operation – always lock your car and front door when entering your home. 10:05 Keep a light on indoors and outdoors, if you are out visiting friends or family. It may be an idea to fit some motion detector security lighting – it won’t just be carol singers who come calling. Keep your personal data safe – and securely dispose of receipts. If buying bikes and/or electronic equipment for Christmas, mark them with your postcode. Away over Christmas? Then plan ahead - be sure to cancel any newspaper or milk subscriptions. Arrange for a neighbour to park on the driveway to help create the impression someone is home. Do not leave descriptive telephone answering machine messages like “we’re away skiing for the Christmas holidays”, nor post your plans on social media. If using outdoor festive lighting, ensure cables aren’t passed through windows, leaving enough gap for burglars to make use of. For any home security improvements, we have locksmiths, alarm and CCTV installers, electricians and many other traders who can help. Before doing this though, I would suggest closing all open programs and to leave Novabench as the only program running. During the testing, Novabench will show you the name of the test being processed.

The Best Destinations to Take Pre-school Clare Lockett Children, Outside of School Holidays Travel Counsellor If you have a baby or toddler not yet of school age, then taking them on a break during May, June and September will ensure competitive holiday prices and a reduction in the number of tourists once you get there. Short flights and plenty of interesting sights to explore, yet stay safe, are at the top of the list when it comes to child-friendly getaways, so take a look at our favourite fly-and-flop destinations, which I’m sure your babies and tots will adore.

Port de Sóller, Majorca, Spain This traditional Majorcan village situated on the west coast, next to an arrestingly beautiful horseshoe harbour, provides pampered luxury for both yourself and your children. This sophisticated holiday destination is lined by an inviting sandy beach for children to play, while the pedestrianised promenade offers a child-friendly environment in which to escape the intensity of the midday sun while enjoying an array of cafes, restaurants and shops.

on the island. Moreover, the beach is highly accessible by ramp with a buggy, and hatching turtles can sometimes be seen in early September, scurrying to the safety of the water. Discerning local accommodation choices for visiting the beach include Diana Palace Hotel just twenty minutes’ drive away, where a kids’ pool is part of a host of family-friendly amenities. Patara, Turkey When taking children closer to school age on holiday, Patara represents a more adventurous, yet hugely rewarding, option for more seasoned young fliers. Gently layered white sand can be found within the country’s largest beach on this south-west stretch, with children particularly enjoying the warm shallow waters and the banks of sand dunes creating endless fun and timeless memories. Away from the beach, bustling local markets and secluded mountain villages provide a distinctly cultural aspect to your trip.

Isola d’Elba, Tuscany, Italy Tuscany’s Elban beaches provide travellers with every imaginable beach type, with your atypical golden sanded coastlines interspersed with rocky shores and well-equipped resorts. These sands are more inviting than ever during the off-peak months, when the holiday crowds have long since dispersed, and you are free to explore the immaculate wonder of the Tuscan coasts. Cable car rides, informal restaurants, and a range of family accommodation options make this a great choice for an out-of-season beach escape with the little ones.

Ile de Ré, France Creating a myriad of fond memories, a trip to France’s Ile de Ré includes beaches with pools at low tide for children to play in and surf-friendly waves for keen surfer parents. Local markets are available to stock up on snacks for a beach picnic and any required baby changing items, while balmy evenings can be spent strolling along the coastline and enjoying a local ice cream, and perhaps something a little stronger for mum and dad.

Zakynthos, Greece A stay at Gerakas beach is a guaranteed trip of a lifetime with small children in tow. Local inhabitants and tourists alike flock to the sloping shores of the beach in the late afternoon to enjoy one of the finest stretches of sand

Woven Chords Christmas Concert Stamford’s Community Choir, Woven Chords, with members from Bourne to Boston, will be performing their mesmerising annual Christmas Concert at Stamford Arts Centre on Friday December 8th, starting at 8pm. Enjoy a vibrant mix of new songs and new arrangements together with traditional Christmas favourites. This will be their first public performance since their exciting new choir director, Emmanuel Omuederiaye, took over this year. Woven Chords is a mixed choir and is run on the principle that everyone can sing, and that nobody should be excluded from music. This means that there are no auditions, the choir is open to anyone who loves singing, and you don’t have to be able to read music, as all songs are taught by ear. Many of the people who join the

choir have never sung outside their bathroom, but they also have more experienced singers who have sung in other choirs. They are a natural voice choir and believe that if you can speak, then you can sing! They are, at the moment open to new members. Why not check out the website www.wovenchords.com? For more information, contact hilary@wovenchords.com Concert tickets are available from Stamford Arts Centre Box Office @ £8 (£7). www.stamfordartscentre.com or phone 01780 763203.

History

Discovering . . . Stagecoach days

Rex Needle

T

he sight of a stagecoach today is largely confined to Christmas cards, a romanticised version of travel from centuries past showing a ruddy-faced driver and a collection of merry passengers heading off to celebrate the festive season whereas reality was very different. Stagecoaches made their appearance on England’s roads in the 17th century but travel was not only extremely uncomfortable because of cramped seating, mud, potholes and puddles on the road, but also dangerous with the possibility of being held up by highwaymen such as Dick Turpin who made rich pickings from passengers until apprehended and hanged for theft in 1739. Flying coaches using steel spring suspension reduced travelling time making it more attractive to travel and as they needed to make stops to give horses and passengers food and rest and often for an overnight stay, coaching inns sprang up along the route, thus making Market Deeping an important staging point on the road between London and the north and the cross country route between Boston and Stamford. By 1743, eight stage coaches were passing through Market Deeping each day. The Express called here as it galloped between London and Barton-on-Humber, as did the Royal Mail coach bound for Hull while The Perseverance stopped here every morning on its journeys

to and from London and Boston and Jackson’s stage coach went through the town on its daily runs between Boston and Stamford. But the coming of the railways sounded the death knell for stagecoach travel and by 1850 they had gone although many of the old coaching inns remain in business, usually identified by the archways which allowed the coaches to pass through into the stable yard behind the inn where an ostler was waiting to help with the horses. Two such hostelries can still be seen in the market place at Market Deeping. The Bull Inn on the north side dates from the early 17th century and although much altered over the years still contains a wealth of period detail including the open semi-circular moulded coaching archway on the front. Across the road is the New Inn, built in 1802 of stone with a Collyweston slate roof and now renamed the Deeping Stage, also with that distinctive coaching arch but now leading to an extension of the bar area. Both buildings have been listed Grade II since 1968 as being of special architectural and historic importance and a continuing reminder of those stagecoach days. Pets and Vets

Keep Your Pets Safe over Christmas by Zoe Reeve from Alder Vets

A

s Christmas is upon us again, it’s good to be reminded of the potential hazards for your pets at this time of year.

to cause kidney failure and usually will result in the death of the cat, so please clear up any spillages immediately.

Onions, fruit cakes, mince pies, blue cheese and chocolate are all toxic to your dogs, and be careful with those turkey bones too! Bones can cause choking, constipation, blockages and can damage your dog’s guts. Grapes and their dried products (currants, sultanas and raisins) are toxic to dogs. Ingestion of even a small quantity can cause severe kidney failure.

Alcohol can have a similar effect in dogs, just as it does in their owners when drunk in excess. They can become wobbly and drowsy and, in severe cases, there is a risk of low body temperature, low blood sugar and coma. Dogs may help themselves to any unattended alcohol left lying around over Christmas, so ensure it’s always out of their reach.

Pine needles off Christmas trees can get stuck in your pet’s fur and in the pads of their feet, causing pain and irritation; hoovering up frequently will reduce this risk. The decorations on the tree can get eaten and cause blockages in the stomach or intestines, sometimes resulting in a Christmas Day visit to the vets! Some decorations will smash or splinter and this can cut the inside of the mouth or injure the gastrointestinal tract. Chewing through those Christmas lights can also give them a big shock!

Holly, mistletoe, and poinsettia plants are poisonous to dogs or cats, so if you normally use these plants to decorate your home, they should be kept in an area that your pet cannot reach. Holly, when ingested, can cause pets to suffer nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Mistletoe can cause gastrointestinal upset and cardiovascular problems, whilst many varieties of lilies can cause kidney failure in cats, if ingested.

Ethylene glycol (anti-freeze) poisoning is very common at this time of year, and we frequently have cases of this in cats. The anti-freeze is very sweet tasting and cats love this taste; sadly, it only takes a very small amount

Please keep all of these toxins out of the way of your pets, so that you can all enjoy the festive season in the best of health.

Merry Christmas from us all at Alders!

Motoring

Top Tips from Go, Go, Go

P

atrick Hunt is Managing Director of Go Go Go Intensive and a member of The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM). Go Go Go Intensive is the only Intensive Driving School in the UK to be affiliated to the IAM, the UK’s leading road safety charity.

As most of us share Christmas with our families, it is inevitable that some of us will be driving over the festive period. Here are my top ten Christmas tips for motorists who are driving over the holiday period: The weather is unpredictable around wintertime. Always keep a two second distance from the vehicle in front and multiply it by two in the wet and by ten in ice or snow. In icy conditions, always use a higher gear, as this provides less power to the wheels and reduces the risk of wheel spin. There is always a higher police presence over Christmas. Make sure that your driving standard is maintained to the highest level. Watch out for pedestrians revelling in the festive spirit, as they could be more unpredictable. Keep an eye on your speed and adjust it according to the environment.

Despite a greater police presence on the roads, drink-driving rates inevitably increase around Christmas time. If the car in front is weaving or making sudden irrational movements and the driver displays inconsistent speed control, give them plenty of room. They could be intoxicated… One of the foremost dangers of driving over Christmas can be black ice. Adjust your speed to the conditions and steer gently with no sharp acceleration or braking. Whilst grit salt can help thaw out frozen water on the road, it can present a problem in itself. The salt crystals mean less of the tyre touches the ground, reducing grip – so bear this in mind when driving through these areas. Opportunist thieves are aware that cars could be laden with expensive items around this time of year, so make sure that they are locked away in the boot, (the expensive items, that is, but then again …!). Car parks are especially busy over Christmas. Take a good look around your vehicle before you get into it and move off, as well as making constant observations when manoeuvring – it could help avoid a costly low speed bump or prevent you injuring a pedestrian. …and finally, having reached your destination safely … Wrap empty boxes for presents and if/when your child misbehaves or doesn’t listen, throw one of the “presents” on to the fire - at least you’ll see the funny side of it.

Merry Christmas everybody!! The most affordable, safe and express learning system to pass your driving test in the UK Tel: 01733 314151 | Email: enquiries@gogogointensive.com

Christmas or Xmas? Christmas is also sometimes known as Xmas. Some people don’t think it’s correct to call Christmas ‘Xmas’ as that takes the ‘Christ’ (Jesus) out of Christmas. (As Christmas comes from Christ-Mass, the Church service that celebrated the birth of Jesus.) But that is not quite right! In the Greek language and alphabet, the letter that looks like an X is the Greek letter chi / Χ (pronounced ‘kye’ - it rhymes with ‘eye’) which is the first letter of the Greek word for Christ, Christos. The early church used the first two letters of Christos in the Greek alphabet ‘chi’ and ‘rho’ to create a monogram (symbol) to represent the name of Jesus. This looks like an X with a small p on the top. The symbol of a fish is sometimes used by Christians (you might see a fish sticker on a car or someone wearing a little fish badge). This comes from the time when the first

Christians had to meet in secret, as the Romans wanted to kill them (before Emperor Constantine became a Christian). Jesus had said that he wanted to make his followers ‘Fishers of Men’, so people started to use that symbol. When two Christians met, one person drew half a basic fish shape (often using their foot in the dust on the ground) and the other person drew the other half of the fish. The Greek word for fish is ‘Ikthus’ or ‘Ichthys’. There are five Greek letters in the word. It can also make up a sentence of Christian beliefs ‘Ie-sous Christos Theou Huios So-te-r’ which in English means “Jesus Christ, Son of God, Saviour”. The second letter of these five letter is X or Christos! So Xmas can also mean Christmas; but it should also be pronounced ‘Christmas’ rather than ‘ex-mas’!

Police Patrol

COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH by Sergeant 600 Rachel Blackwell

A

t almost every Neighbourhood Panel Meeting, our team is asked about what can be done about speeding in our towns and villages. Many residents express an interest in taking an active part against drivers who excessively speed, putting them and their families at risk where they live. Whilst Community Speed Watch has always been in place in Lincolnshire, the scheme was never fully adopted to the degree that communities in our neighbouring counties use it. However, the enhanced scheme was officially unveiled at a Road Safety Summit in Grantham on November 3rd. With backing from the Lincolnshire Police and Crimes Commissioner, Marc Jones, Lincolnshire residents will now be supported in establishing their own groups to combat speeders. Speed Watch, which started in 2014, currently operates in 170 of the 507 parishes across the county, and largely involves placing portable speed notification signs in speeding hot spots.

How will it operate? Now, local residents will be given guidance about buying the proper equipment to operate, and will be offered appropriate training in the use of radar guns to check the speed of passing motorists. The new scheme is designed not to issue penalties to drivers, but is successful in causing drivers to think about and moderate their speed. Drivers caught speeding by the volunteers will be sent a warning letter and road safety advice under the new enhanced Community Speed Watch Scheme. Repeat offenders will be visited by local Neighbourhood Policing Teams. How can I get involved? Information about the scheme and how to register (by any interested group or community), can be found on the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership website. Alternatively, you can e-mail them for joining instructions on staying.alive@lincolnshire.gov.uk. They can also be contacted on 01522 805800.
