Relieve the stress of starting another school year Starting a new school year can be a time of great excitement… and great anxiety. Help ease those worries with these tips. • Meet the teachers & tour the school. It’s a three-way relationship between you, your child and their teacher and by working together positively you help your child enjoy going to school and learning. You can also build mutually-supportive relationships with other parents; networking with other back-to-school parents promotes the “village” approach and helps to alleviate the myth of “doing this by myself.” • Create a family calendar. Plan and write down activities and make lists to prioritize and organize sports events, plays, performances, etc. Creating a schedule for daily study time too and knowing when your child is testing is also beneficial. Don’t forget to schedule quiet time, and remember to say no when necessary. • Taking care of yourself and having fun is essential too. Eating health as a family encourages good habits while feeding the body and the brain, staying active and physically fit with the family empowers health and builds self-esteem. Also, be aware of the new National Sleep

Foundation recommendations: it is suggested that preschoolers get 10-13 hours of sleep, preteens 9-11 hours, and teens are suggested to have 8-10 hours. All these tools combined with a positive attitude will help ease the back to school stressors. If you are looking for online resources, MilitaryChildCare.com and MilitaryOneSource.mil have articles aplenty. Call or stop by the Airman & Family Readiness Center to meet with a specialist, or attend a class and meet other parents at the Aug. 17 Lunch & Learn (AB) or Dine & Dash (WS) class.
