30 Years Ago: Karen Johnson sells 30 subs One Year Ago

Diboll T-Ball All-Stars wins state championship. Proud team members include Carson Morales, Izaac DeJesus, Andres Palacio, Adian Jaraguchi, Angel Rios, Briar Manley, Ben Smith, Conner Grigg, Tristan Hernandez, Brody Finley, Colton Havard and Coaches Juan Morales, Raymundo DeJesus, Roy Rios and Javier Jaraguchi. Republican voters in Precinct 4 go back to polls to decide between Mark McLin and Ray Anthony for constable. Former longtime Diboll resident Jack Shadix returns to Diboll to visit friends after a 27-month stint with the Peace Corps in South America. Diboll High School FFA officers travel to Corpus Christi for the annual Texas FFA Convention. Making the trip are Cheyenne Swor, president; Jessica Skipper, vice president; Eric Concha, secretary; Sarah Smith, sentinel; Hollie Cole, treasurer; Tyler Allen, reporter and ag teachers Kevin Swor and Adam Thompson. Newly elected officers of the Pilot Club of Diboll 20122013 are Brenda Russell, outgoing president; Sue Beaty, president; Fran Rodriquez, president electi; Geneva Ard, 1st vice president; Barbara Nash, recording secretary; Diane Tate, corresponding secretary; Hellen Schmidt, treasurer; Billie Willmon, Betty Capps and Vivian Holt, directors.

Five Years Ago

Diboll’s (13-14) baseball all-stars win district title. Team members include Zane Anthony, T.J. Colwell, Jay Lowe, Everado Castillo, Jason Cook, Javy Hernandez, D.J. Jesus, Sergio Castillo, Doug Waters, Cody Gelvin, Tony Hernandez and Coaches Derek Lowe, and Ray Anthony. Diboll ISD board of trustees votes unanimously to hire Gary Martel as it new superintendent of schools. Fred Mitchell receives belated swearing-in oath to a new term on the Diboll City Council. Diboll City Manager Kenneth Williams states that none of the $800,000 grant money the city received will be spent on upkeep/improvements at the Diboll baseball facilities. The resignation of Diboll High School Principal Daniel Lopez is accepted by Diboll ISD trustees without comment.

Ten Years Ago

City of Diboll is cut from Angelina County in Texas House redistricting plan. Angelina College Fire Academy’s 10th class graduates 15 recruits. Diboll High School Senior Joey Tamez, future civil engineer, is the recipient of a

Temple Foundation Scholarship. Diboll High School allsports standout Jermichael Finley is “hooping it up” this summer with the Houston Hoops summer basketball program. Diboll High School Lady Jacks receiving Dist. 21-3A softball honors are Stephanie Abbott (pitcher), Heather Warren (first base), Allison McClain (third base) and Vanessa Suarez (short stop).

Twenty Years Ago

More than 250 gather at meeting between the shareholders and the Burke Water Supply Corporation to ask questions concerning sizable hikes in the system’s water rates. The newly organized Lufkin Spanish League Baseball gets season underway. This league is a hardball baseball league for men over age 18. There are seven teams in the league competing this season. Newly elected Pilot Club of Diboll officers include Alma Breazeale, presidentelect; Sue Beaty, president; Sharon Brown, secretary; Alice Ashworth, treasurer; and Essie Hankins, Bettie Havard, directors.

Thirty Years Ago This Week

Diboll Ponytails All-Stars finished a close second to Central at the state softball tournament. Members of the Ponytails are (front) Nochia Padillo, Countina Moore, Sherri Capps, Staci Covington, Catherine Johnson, Marvetta Rhone and Mary Tamez. In back are Angela Barkley, Sharon Rodgers, Erica Simmons, Benita Sheffield, Erica Joshua, Jerla Lyons, Cheryl Moore and Coach Cheryl Bean. In far back are coaches James Furgurson and Fred Barkley.. Former DHS band twirler Carey Luce Havard is chosen as one of the 1993-94 TwirlO-Jacks to represent Stephen F. Austin State University. Aribbon-cutting ceremony is held for the new 49-n-More Video & Game Super Store and Subway located at 210 North Temple Drive in Diboll.
