Aus der zehnten Etage des »K2«, einer der beiden Hochhausscheiben der Universität Stuttgart, sieht das ungewöhnliche Gebilde am Rand des Campus wie ein maßstabs­ loser geflochtener Korb aus. Erst in Relation zu den Menschen, die in dieses Flechtwerk strömen, erkennt man seine wahren Dimen­ sionen von beachtlichen 10 m Durchmes­ ser. Über der Rundung einer jahrelang un­ beachteten Betonbank wölbte sich Ende des Sommersemesters 2010 eine filigrane Konstruktion aus dünnen Holzbändern, die nachts wie die überdimensionierte Lampe eines dänischen Designers leuchtet und vorbeifahrende Autofahrer verblüfft. Dabei handelt es sich bei dem Bauwerk keines­ wegs um eine gefällige Stadtmöblierung, sondern um ein wissenschaftliches For­ schungsobjekt, das im Hinblick auf Innova­ tion und Vernetzung verschiedener Diszipli­ nen seinesgleichen sucht. »Ausgangspunkt unserer Überlegungen war eine Eigenschaft von Sperrholz, deren Möglichkeiten bislang nicht für statische Zwecke genutzt wurde: die Elastizität durch die Eigenspannung des Materials«, erklärt Manuel Vollrath bei der Pressekonferenz. Mit wenigen Sätzen beschreibt der Architekturstudent stellver­ tretend für sein Entwurfsteam das Konzept: »Zuerst mussten wir an unseren Versuchs­ ständen durch Messungen die relevanten Materialkennwerte ermitteln, d. h., mit wel­ chen Radien sich die Sperrholzplatten bie­ gen lassen und welche Spannungen dabei auftreten. Der zweite Schritt bestand darin, eine Geometrie zu finden, die einerseits die Potenziale des Materials optimal ausspielt und andererseits gestalterisch und funktio­ nal als Architektur überzeugend ist«. Den geometrischen Ausgangspunkt der Kons­ truktion bildet ein Bogenpaar, das so anein­ ander gekoppelt ist, dass sich eine Auftei­ lung in zug- und biegebeanspruchte Seg­ mente ergibt, wobei jedes Zugsegment das benachbarte Biegesegment elastisch in Form hält (Abb. 2). 40 dieser Bogenpaare, also 80 radiale Holzstreifen, sind nötig, um einen Torus mit 10 m ­Außendurchmesser zu schließen, der – mit senkrechten Span­ ten in die mit Kies gefüllten Holzwannen als

Widerlager gesteckt – eine äußerst filigrane und mit 3,50 m Spannweite zugleich leis­ tungsfähige, in sich stabile Struktur ergibt (Abb. 1).

Produziert wurden die Holzstreifen nur ­wenige hundert Meter vom Standort des Pavillons entfernt, im Institutsgebäude vom fakultätseigenen Industrieroboter, der als CNC-Fräse konfiguriert ist. Spätestens hier wird klar, dass die Realisierung des Stu­ dentenentwurfs ohne die Einbeziehung der aktuellsten Forschungsergebnisse des ICD und ITKE undenkbar gewesen wäre. Sämtli­ che der über 500 Holzteile weisen individu­ elle Geometrien auf. Dazu kommt, dass die 10 m langen Sperrholzstreifen gestückelt

werden mussten, um auch durch Engstellen transportiert werden zu können (Abb. 3).

Einfache Steckverbindungen und Schrau­ ben ersetzen die sonst im Holzbau üblichen aufwendigen Stahlknoten. Die im Material ­innewohnende Eigenspannung erhöht die Tragfähigkeit des Gesamtsystems erheblich und ermöglicht es, den gesamten Pavillon aus nur 6,5 mm starken Birkensperrholz­ lamellen zu fertigen. Das Biegeverhalten ­bildete die Grundlage für das computer­ basierte Informationsmodell (Abb. 1), das auf einem Skript mit ca. 6500 Zeilen Code beruht, das entspricht ca. 170 DIN-A4-­ Seiten. Das geometrische Informations­ modell war Ausgangspunkt für alle weiter­ Frank Kaltenbach arbeitet seit 1998 als Fachredak­ teur für Detail.

führenden Schritte: die statische Berech­ nung durch »Aufwickeln« der ebenen Strei­ fen mittels FEM-Analyse (Abb. 4), die robo­ tische Fertigung und die exakte Positionie­ rung auf dem Gelände. Während für einen Durchlauf des Informationsmodells nur weni­ ge Minuten erforderlich sind, benötigt ein leistungsfähiger Computer für das FEM-­ Modell eineinhalb Tage reine Rechenzeit!

Schließlich können die Wissenschaftler am gebauten Pavillon anhand von Belastungs­ tests das Relaxationsverhalten, d. h. das ­alterungsbedingte Nachlassen der Eigen­ spannung von Sperrholz messen, um die Werte in künftige virtuelle 3D-Modelle einflie­ ßen zu lassen (Abb. 5). DETAIL 10/2010

At the end of the summer semester in 2010, a vaulting temporary research pavilion was built at the edge of the Stuttgart University campus.

The starting point for this student scheme was the unexploited structural potential of plywood.

The geometry is based on linked pairs of segmental arches (ill. 2), 40 of which (i.e. 80 radial strips) were needed to close a torus with an external diameter of 10 m. With a span of 3.5 m, this filigree structure is both efficient and stable (ill. 1). The faculty’s own industrial robot, configured as a CNC milling machine, was used to give each of the more than 500 timber elements its own ge­ometry. The 10-metre plywood strips also had to be cut into segments for transport (ill. 3). The individual segments

are subject to either tensile or bending stresses, whereby each tensile segment elastically maintains the form of the adjoining bending segment (ill. 2). The entire ­pavilion was constructed from birch-plywood strips only 6.5 mm thick. The digital information model was based on the bending behaviour (ill. 1) and a script with roughly 6,500 lines of code. This forms the basis of all further steps: the structural calculations in a process of “coiling up” the flat strips by finite element analysis (FEA) (ill. 4); and the robotic production of the elements and their positioning on site. The relaxation behaviour of the finished pavilion as a result of ageing can be measured and the results used as data input for future virtual 3D models (ill. 5).

Reiner Holzbau oder Mischbauweise?

Holz ist zurzeit aufgrund seiner ökologischen Eigenschaften besonders gefragt.

Selbst bei größeren Bauvorhaben wie im Geschosswohnungsbau wird viel mit dem Material experimentiert. Dabei zeigt sich ­jedoch immer wieder, dass ein reiner Holzbau schnell an seine Grenzen stößt.

Die Kombination mit anderen Baustoffen kann daher eine sinnvolle Alternative ­darstellen.

Die Frage nach Sinnhaftigkeit, Nachhaltigkeit, Wirtschaftlichkeit und Logik einer ­Konstruktion lässt sich nicht allgemeingültig ­beantworten, sondern muss stets in Abwägung aller Rahmenbedingungen und Vorgaben aufs Neue untersucht und überprüft werden. Während bei der reinen Holzbauweise die Vorteile vor allem im Bereich der Ökologie und Nachhaltigkeit sowie dem ­höheren Vorfertigungsgrad liegen, bietet die Mischbauweise Vorteile bei größeren Bauvorhaben mit mehreren Geschossen und größeren Spannweiten. Bezüglich Kosten und Planungsaufwand ist die Mischbauweise gegenüber dem reinen Holzbau tendenziell günstiger zu bewerten. Ab­hängig von der Nutzung und Größe und den damit zusammenhängenden gesetzlichen Vorgaben stößt der reine Holzbau in den Bereichen Brandschutz und Schallschutz früher an seine Grenzen. Bei mehreren Geschossen muss ein Holzbau oft mit einem weniger leicht brennbaren Material verkleidet werden, sodass das Konstruktionsmaterial Holz gar nicht mehr sichtbar ist.

Das Potenzial, einen Niedrigenergie- oder Passivhausstandard zu erreichen, kann grundsätzlich bei beiden Konstruktions­ weisen als gleichwertig betrachtet werden, da hier überwiegend die Ausbildung der Außenhülle maßgeblich ist. Der Vorteil des reinen Holzbaus liegt vor allem in den Möglichkeiten des Recyclings und der CO2Neu­tra­lität des Baustoffs Holz.

Die folgenden drei Beispiele unseres Büros zeigen verschiedene Arten von Holz- bzw.

Mischkonstruktionen und verdeutlichen die Zusammenhänge, die bei der Auswahl der Konstruktion eine Rolle spielen.

Gemeindezentrum in St. Gerold Die gewählte Konstruktion lag in Anbetracht der vorgegebenen Rahmenbedingungen auf der Hand (Abb. 1). Da der Bauherr sich ein möglichst ökologisches und nachhal­tiges Vorzeigeprojekt wünschte, fiel die Wahl schnell auf eine Holzkonstruktion.

Auch die Möglichkeit, Holz aus dem gemeindeeigenen Wald zu verwenden, sowie die Bauaufgabe mit eher kleinteiliger Raumstruktur und geringen Spannweiten sprachen für den Baustoff.

Der viergeschossige Neubau ist als kompakter Baukörper im Passivhausstandard konzipiert und energietechnisch nahezu ­autark. Mit Ausnahme der in Stahlbeton ausgeführten erdberührenden Außenwände wurde das gesamte Gebäude in Holzbauweise erstellt. Sowohl die tragenden Außenwände als auch sämtliche Innenwände konnten als vorgefertigte Holzelemente vor Ort versetzt werden. Auch der Liftschacht wurde in gleicher Weise aus vier massiven Holzelementen aufgestellt. Sämtliche Geschossdecken sind in Form von massiven Holzdielen ausgeführt. Die Dachkonstruk­ tion besteht aus einer Holzbalkendecke mit hinterlüftetem Flachdach, das für Wartungsarbeiten zugänglich ist.

Musikhaus in Röthis Ursprünglich hatten wir auch für das dreigeschossige Musikhaus in Röthis eine reine Holzkonstruktion geplant (Abb. 2, 3). Die spezielle Bauaufgabe als Musikprobelokal in Kombination mit einem Café erforderte jedoch im Laufe der Planung aus Schallschutzgründen eine Änderung des konstruktiven Konzepts.

Die tragende Konstruktion besteht aus ­einem Untergeschoss in Massivbauweise; auch der Lift- und Installationskern mit aussteifender Wirkung sowie die Decke über dem Erdgeschoss sind in Stahlbeton aus­ geführt. Unsichtbar in die Außen- und Zwischenwände integrierte Stahlstützen übernehmen die vertikale Lastabtragung in der Erdgeschossebene. Die Ausführung der obersten Geschossdecke als Holzbalkenkonstruktion ermöglichte die Führung von

größeren Installationsquerschnitten für die Belüftung des Musikprobesaals. Zusätzlich werden die Deckenhohlräume als Tiefen­ absorber für die Optimierung der Raumakustik aktiviert. Sämtliche Außen­wände sind als vorgefertigte Holzelemente aus­ gebildet, im Obergeschoss wurden diese tragend ausgeführt. Aus Schallschutzgründen erhielt das Dach eine stärkere Kiesschüttung.

Wohnanlage Lerchenpark in Lauterach Aus wirtschaftlichen Gründen haben wir für die Wohnanlage Lerchenpark eine Mischbauweise gewählt. Die tragende Konstruk­ tion der fünf dreigeschossigen Häuserzeilen besteht aus massiven Stahlbetondecken mit eingelegten Lüftungsrohren sowie Stahl­stützen in Fassadenebene und in den Zwischenwandbereichen. Die tragenden ­Innenwände zur Tief­garage und zum Untergeschoss sind massiv in Stahlbeton aus­ geführt, wobei deren Auf­lager zur Unter­ geschoss­decke zur thermischen Optimierung auf einzelne Auflagerpunkte reduziert sind. Auch die Treppenhäuser und Liftkerne sind massiv ausgebildet und übernehmen die statische Aussteifung der Gebäude. Die Außenwände bestehen aus vorgefertigten, eingeschossigen Holzelementen.

Ein wesentliches Argument für die Mischbauweise war neben der Wirtschaftlichkeit, dass die speziell im Wohnungsbau erforderlichen Schallschutzanforderungen zwischen den einzelnen Geschossen einfacher umzusetzen sind als bei einer reinen Holzkonstruktion.

Ein weiterer Vorteil lag im Erreichen größerer Spannweiten bei gleichzeitig geringerer Konstruktionshöhe. Auch ließen sich die vorgeschriebenen Brand­schutz­anforde­ rungen mit der gewählten Mischbauweise problemlos erfüllen: Die zur vertikalen Lastabtragung der Fassade notwendigen Stahlstützen sind hinter einer raumseitigen Beplankung in die innen liegende Installationsebene der Außenwand integriert; dadurch konnte auf einen Brandschutzanstrich verzichtet werden.

The application of any form of construction is dependent on the context and purpose.

The advantages of all-timber construction, for example, lie primarily in the realm of ecology and sustainability, as well as in the greater degree of prefabrication that is possible. ­Timber construction has its limits, however, when it comes to fire protection and sound insulation. Mixed forms of construction are advantageous in larger projects in allowing several storeys and greater spans to be implemented. In addition, mixed forms tend to be more economical in terms of design and building costs. The two forms are more or less the same when it comes to complying with low-energy and passive-building standards. All important in that respect is the design of the outer skin. The advantage of ­all-timber construction lies principally in the scope it allows for recycling and in the CO2 neutrality of the material.

The following three examples show the potential of different kinds of timber and mixed forms of construction.

Community Centre in St Gerold In view of the existing constraints, it was the clients’ wish to create a model community centre in St Gerold, Austria, that would be as environmentally sustainable as possible. An all-timber structure was chosen, for which it was possible to use the local authority’s own wood in conjunction with a small-scale spatial structure and small spans.

The compact four-storey volume has a ­passive-energy form of construction and is virtually self-sufficient in its energy supply.

Apart from the use of reinforced concrete for the external walls where these are in contact with the earth, the entire building has a timber structure.

The other load-bearing external walls and all internal walls consist of prefabricated timber units. In addition, four solid timber elements were used for the lift shaft. The floors are in a vertically stacked plank construction; the flat roof was built with solid timber beams. The roof is designed to bear foot traffic for maintenance purposes.

House of Music in Röthis This three-storey building was originally planned as an all-timber construction, but changes had to be made to meet the special needs of a music rehearsal centre (combined with a cafe), primarily for reasons of sound ­insulation. The load-bearing elements of the basement storey as well as the slab over the ground floor are in concrete, as are the lift and services core, which has a bracing function.

At ground floor level, vertical loads are borne by steel columns concealed in the external and intermediate walls. The timber-beam construction of the uppermost floor allowed larger service runs to be laid for the ventilation of the rehearsal space. In addition, the voids in the floors act as bass absorbers and optimise the spatial acoustics. Prefabricated timber elements were used for all external walls, which were executed in a load-bearing form on the upper floor. A thicker bed of gra­v­ el was laid on the roof for sound-insulation purposes.

Lerchenpark Housing in Lauterach For this development, a mixed form of construction was chosen for economic reasons.

The load-bearing structure of the five threestorey housing tracts consists of concrete floors with integral ventilation ducts, and steel columns in the outer and intermediate walls.

The load-bearing internal walls in the basement and underground garage are also in a solid form of construction, although the bearings for the floor slab on top are restricted to specific points in order to optimise thermal transmission between floors. The staircases and lift cores were ­executed in concrete and serve to brace the building. The external walls consist of prefabricated storey-height timber elements. Apart from economic considerations, an important argument in favour of mixed forms of construction – especially in housing – is the sound insulation between floors. It is not so easy to implement this with all-timber structures. In addition, mixed forms of construction allow greater widths to be spanned with a smaller structural depth. It is also simpler to achieve the necessary fire protection.

Wood is particularly suited to prefabricated construction. It is light in weight, has excellent load-bearing properties and is easy to work.

Centuries ago, the walls and floors of half-­ timbered buildings as well as roof trusses were prepared on the ground for erection. ­Today, wall, floor and facade elements are commonly prefabricated in their entirety; ­indeed, complete spatial units are available.

Of great significance in this respect are the cladding and coverings of the constructional elements. Since the 1950s, plywood, chipboard and composite wood boards have been used for this purpose, as well as plasterboard and gypsum fibreboard, which, used in conjunction with mineral wool and wood-fibre mats, are ideal for fire protection, sound and thermal insulation. The greater the complexity of compound units, the more important it is to manufacture them under workshop conditions and with appropriate machinery. Transport to site should not cause any problem if the usual constraints of freight and assembly are observed.

With panel forms of construction, entire wall and floor elements can be produced, including the linings, insulation, fixings, service installations, doors and windows. Load-bearing elements can be fabricated in timber-frame or solid forms of construction and consist of squared timbers and/or semi-finished products (ill. 2). When panels are used as a spatial enclosure, they have to comply with high standards in terms of thermal and sound insulation, fire protection, impermeability, etc. Individual requirements can be met through the use of multi-layer elements, but it is important in this respect to find an economical system with a simple form of construction and quickly executed connections. The degree of prefabrication can be very high in the case of wall ­elements; it also makes sense to supply external walls units complete with finished surfaces and built-in windows (ills. 16 –18).

Manufacturing panels is based on the principles of timber-framed construction. Posts are set on a horizontal plate and held in position by a rail at the top. The studding is covered on both faces – usually with two layers of plasterboard to ensure the requisite rigidity –

and the intermediate spaces are insulated.

The plasterboard also provides protection against fire. This form of construction has ­excellent sound-insulating properties. If elements of this kind are used for external walls, the outer cladding can consist of a 2 cm layer of wood fibreboard lined with a moisture-­ diffusing sealing layer and boarding or facade slabs with a ventilated cavity to the rear. Alternatively, reinforced rendering can be used as a finishing coat. Internally, the insulation will be separated from the lining by a vapour-­ retarding layer. Special forms of framed or stud construction consist of stacked-plank and block-stud walls. The latter are formed with square or rectangular timber members set closely next to each other. Elements of this kind can bear much greater loads than other systems and can also absorb and store heat and moisture better. A boarded finish will be necessary as a means of fixing and bracing the loose studs (ills. 7, 10). Insulation thicknesses of up to 24 cm will be necessary for external walls, which can be finished with cladding and a rear ventilated cavity. If rendering is used as a finish, the insulation slabs must be adhesive fixed. With thicknesses of up to 42 cm, external walls of this kind take up a greater floor area than post-and-beam construction, which can be 10 –12 cm thinner while providing the same insulation standard.

Stacked-plank floors (ill. 2) consist of vertically stacked planks laid out in the direction of the span, connected by nails, dowels or adhesive. The stacked planks are joined with sheeting to form solid slabs; but units of this kind require additional sound insulation – walls in the form of dry lining; and floors with a layer of stone chippings (ill. 10).

Laminated cross-boarded elements (ills. 2, 13) are also a solid form of timber construction.

They can be of various thicknesses. Openings can be cut and plasterboard applied at works.

Walls of this kind have a high load-bearing ­capacity.

A much greater quantity of wood is required for the production of solid timber elements than for framed systems.

Coffered floors (ills. 2, 6) are suited to large spans. The load-bearing capacity can be ­considerably increased if the upper and lower layers of sheeting are adhesive fixed. With a floor thickness of 40 cm and a surface loading of 3.5 – 5 kN/m2, spans of up to 10 m are possible, whereby the construction is much lighter in weight than comparable concrete slabs.

Similar spans can be covered using a hybrid type of construction (ill. 4) with equivalent overall thicknesses. Hybrid forms consist of a tension layer of solid timber slabs (stackedplank or laminated cross-boarded elements) or timber beams, plus an upper compression layer of concrete. The two form a structural entity. A friction bond between the materials can be achieved by cutting shallow recesses in the wood or by means of plugs. Hybrid slabs can be prefabricated and assembled in a finished state with grouted joints. Alternatively, the concrete can be laid in-situ.

The floor systems described above are ideal for places of assembly. In a school refectory 18

pline during the planning stage. Wall and floor elements are supplied in a more or less finished state and cannot be adapted on site. Elements made by different trades are executed parallel to each other in part, which requires very tight tolerances. One condition for this is the control and approval of the workshop planning. Much of the supervision, therefore, occurs in the office prior to production and assembly. Planners need to familiarise themselves with this manner of working. Multi-­ storey timber construction is not an everyday occurrence; nor is wood usually regarded as an ideal material for urban situations, even though prefabricated timber units are emin­ ently suited to work in cities because of the short erection time they allow. In view of their light weight, they also lend themselves to erection on the existing basement structures of demolished buildings. As the examples show, timber can be used in many cases ­instead of concrete, steel and brickwork. Of importance, too, are the ecological and economic aspects associated with this material.

In the centre of Zurich, not far from the main railway station, a spectacular office building has recently begun to demonstrate the ­potential of wood as construction material.

Shigeru Ban designed this new seven-story building with its visible timber structure as an addition to the headquarters of the Tamedia publishing company. The structure allowed an assembly process similar to building blocks and feature a comprehensible load-bearing system. Wood elements were to remain exposed. To realise these architectural preconditions by using glue-laminated wood in premium quality for visible application and locking pin connections milled with extraordinary ­precision comprised a great challenge for all partners involved.

One of Shigeru Ban’s aims was to build the structure in its entirety of wood, similar to traditional Japanese timber buildings. Not only columns and beams, but also joint connections consist predominantly of wood: instead of screws, nails or steel connectors, special dowels made of beech plywood serve for load transmission and reinforcement of construction components. The load-bearing structure with its full-height columns, beam pairs and girders with oval cross-section was created as a precise, CNC-milled construction kit and assembled on-site similar to a three-dimensional puzzle. Planning and realisation of this ambitious project were a great challenge for the timber engineers and builders.

As in previous projects, Shigeru Ban once more collaborated with Hermann Blumer and the Blumer-Lehmann Corporation, jointly ­responsible for developing the concept. The 38.15-m-long main tract is comprised of eight wood frames each set apart at 5.45 m. They consist of four columns each connected to a beam pair per floor. The continuous columns terminate at eave height and are delivered in one piece. Each column is made of three glue-laminated block-bonded timber components. They are 21 m tall with a cross section of 440 by 440 mm and weigh 2.5 t. The beam pairs span 11 m across the building’s main tract and are cambered at 25 mm.

Columns and twin beams are attached via joints that feature specially crafted connectors made of beech plywood. The 240-mm-wide beam pairs are made of two elements of 120 mm in width. They are supplemented by 40-mm-wide oval beech plywood panels as reinforcement along the four joints of the gluelaminated timber beams. In follow the beams were block-bonded along the end section.

As result, concentrated load introduction can be controlled in regard to lateral pressure.

The beam pairs are attached to a large, oval beech plywood dowel placed into a precisely milled oval notch within the column. Two oval beech plywood panels reinforce the reduced column cross section along the joints, enabling controlled introduction of loads. Since in this case loads are transmitted via contact,

exact fitting is a prerequisite for planning and production. The beech connectors are concealed. As result, the precisely balanced ­geometry of the joint form contributes to its impression – a fact that the architect placed great importance in. Roof slabs made of 45 mm three-ply panels stabilise the structure.

They are connected to the reinforced-concrete staircases along the transition to the existing building and the northern wing.

The roof construction consists of rigid frames spanning 17.38 m. These are placed on cantilevers made of beech plywood panels anchored by the beam pairs of the floor slabs below. The interior columns on the top floor do not transmit loads and are merely attached horizontally via wood connectors. The connections in the angled rigid corners of the roof frame were also made of beech plywood panels. In the corner area, these were grooved along both ends in order to support an harmonic load transfer from the beams, thus increasing load-bearing capacity and ductility of the shear connections. The building wing along Werdstrasse is merely 4 m wide. Here, only one interior and exterior column each remain, set apart identically to the main tract.

One distinctive feature is the entrance area at the narrow end of the building. In order to create a column-free entrance area, a truss frame along the first floor connects to the two centre columns of the northern column line.

i­nto the corner columns via joints and diagonal struts. Specially shaped beech plywood dowels were developed for the joints of the truss frame. The doubly curved chamfer of the truss struts meets the requirement that sections along both columns should be horizontal although columns are not parallel to each other in plan. Special design tools for 3D modelling that aren’t widely used within wood construction were required for these components.

Precision of fitting and geometry played a central role in the planning and production of the structure. Roughly 80 per cent of construction components, including the timber construction, as well as the glass facade, stairs, interior glass partitions and cooling ceilings were prefabricated to guarantee high quality and quick assembly.

The production of the timber construction included the primary structure and manufacturing of the ceiling elements measuring 2.70 ≈ 5.30 m. The hollow-core ceilings were already infilled with sand and insulation in the workshop. They provide the necessary thermal storage mass, as well as improved sound proofing. The prefabricated construction components were first placed into storage. Corner guards and foil served to protect the primary structure during transport and storage. On the inner-city construction site, logistics were a rather difficult task: There was only one driving lane available for delivery and storage. All deliveries were coordinated just-in-time by the general contractor. For the timber construction this resulted in up to four deliveries per day during peak periods.

Assembly began along the existing building’s southern perimeter. The 8 timber frames were pre-assembled and erected in succession, with every preceding frame serving as a template for each successive one. First, the initial half of the two-part beams pairs was fixed ­onto precisely measured cantilevers along the southern building wall. After that, the four columns with the pre-assembled beech plywood dowels were pushed into the five beam pairs lying above each other. Then the second row of beam pairs was assembled. Each successive one was erected directly along the completed frame. The entire frame element,

The schedule was optimised by simultaneous work processes and also supported by the vertical sequence of structural assembly. As result, the timber construction was already ­finished along the first column line, while the concrete of the northern wing staircase was 16 still being poured. The extraordinary structure of the new Tamedia building displays the qualities of wood as a construction material; a remarkable reference for a wood building in an urban context. Most of all, aside from the structural solutions for timber construction almost completely devoid of any steel components, it is the atmospheric quality of the building interior that fascinates employees as well as visitors: the planed and unfinished surface of the wood construction creates a warm, pleasant spatial impression.

The project demonstrates the idea of simplicity and clarity within a precise construction kit as a structural system and combines digital technology in design and production with the natural character of wood as construction material.

Mit 26 m Höhe und schimmernder Aluminiumfassade ist der »LifeCycle Tower One« in Dornbirn schon auf den ersten Blick kein typischer Holzbau. Der achtgeschossige Holz-Hybridbau ist der Prototyp einer in interdisziplinärer Forschungsarbeit entwickelten Systembauweise, die bis zu 20 Etagen ermöglicht. Vorgefertigte Fassadenelemente und Verbundgeschossdecken bilden das modulare System, ergänzt um den aussteifenden Treppenhauskern aus Ortbeton. Als hybride Konstruktion optimiert die neuartige Verbundrippendecke aus Holz und Beton den Materialeinsatz. Die 2,70 ≈ 8,10 m großen Elemente bestehen aus einer 8 cm dicken Stahlbetonauflage als Druckplatte, die

zugleich dem Schall- und Brandschutz dient, und Brettschichtholzbalken (24 ≈ 28 cm) als Unterzüge. Synergien nutzen auch die Fassadenelemente, die – ausgenommen der Aluverkleidung – komplett mit Verglasung und Stützen vorgefertigt wurden und die Montagezeit wesentlich verkürzten. Alle ­Stützen ­haben einheitliche Querschnitte (24 ≈ 24 cm).

Als Doppelstützen nehmen sie in Fassaden­ ebene an den Modulstößen jeweils ein Deckenelement auf. Stahldorne am Stützenkopf verbinden die Module. Das Gebäude wird »zusammengesteckt« und die Fugen mit Beton verfüllt. Die Deckenelemente werden so zur aussteifenden Scheibe, die als nicht brennbare Schicht die Geschosse trennt. Der

»LCT One« ist das erste achtstöckige Gebäude, bei dem Holz in tragenden Bauteilen ungekapselt, d. h. nicht brandschutzverkleidet ist. So strukturieren die Stützen und Träger die lichtdurchfluteten Räume, die unbehandelten Holzoberflächen kontrastieren mit den Deckenpaneelen aus Stahlblech. Passgenau zwischen den Holzbalken eingesetzt, verbergen sie die Installationen und dienen als Heiz- bzw. Kühldecken. Nicht zuletzt ist auch die Nutzung des Gebäudes hybrid: Dank des Fassadenrasters von 2,70 m und großen Spannweiten sind die Etagen frei unterteilbar und eignen sich für Großraum- oder Zellenbüros ebenso wie für Wohnungen und Hotelzimmer.

With a height of 26 metres and a shimmering aluminium facade, the LifeCycle Tower in Dornbirn does not have the typical appearance of a wooden structure. This eight-storey timber hybrid building is the 6 prototype of a form of construction created in interdisciplinary research work. The modular system can be employed for developments up to 20 storeys in height and consists of prefabricated facade elements and composite intermediate floors, complemented by an in-situ concrete staircase core with a bracing function.

The use of materials is optimised by the hybrid form of construction of the new composite ribbed floors in timber and concrete. The 2.70 ≈ 8.10 m elements consist of an 8 cm 6

compression topping layer in reinforced concrete (which also serves the needs of sound insulation and fire protection) and 24 ≈ 28 cm laminated timber downstand beams.

Synergetic concepts are also exploited in the facade elements, which (apart from the aluminium cladding) were prefabricated complete with glazing and columns, thereby considerably reducing the assembly time.

All columns have a uniform 24 ≈ 24 cm crosssection and occur in pairs at the junctions between modules in the facade plane, each one bearing a floor element. The modules are connected by steel pins at the heads of the columns, and the joints were ultimately filled with concrete. The floor elements function as brac-

ing slabs that form non-combustible layers separating the individual storeys.

The LifeCycle Tower is at present the tallest building in which exposed timber is used as a load-bearing part of the construction; i.e. not clad to provide fire protection. The columns and beams articulate the light-filled rooms, their untreated wooden surfaces forming an attractive contrast to the sheet-steel ceiling panels, which conceal the service installations and act as heating/cooling soffits. The building also has a potentially hybrid use: thanks to the 2.70-metre facade grid and the large spans, the storeys are freely divisible and can be used for open-plan and cellular office layouts, as well as for dwellings and hotel rooms.

Unter den zahlreichen natürlichen Baustoffen nimmt Bambus eine besondere Stellung ein. Er ist als Pflanze nicht anspruchsvoll, wächst schnell – laut Fachleuten bis zu 1 m am Tag –, wächst nach dem Ernten ohne Aussaat von selbst nach und weist Festigkeitswerte auf, die teilweise sogar Stahl übertreffen. Bereits nach drei bis fünf Jahren kann man die Gräser ernten. Es gibt über 1000 Arten. Zufällig hörte ich von einem Riesenbambus in Yunnan im Süden Chinas, und tatsächlich haben wir den Giant-Bambus oder auch Julong-Bambus an der Grenze zu Myanmar gefunden. Die insgesamt 96 Stützen, die aus 30 m langen Rohren herausgeschnitten wurden, bilden nun mit 22 cm Durchmesser am Fußpunkt und 7,40 m Länge die imposante Hauptkonstruktion des Bauwerks.

Insektenschutz und Haltbarkeit Zur Haltbarkeit von Bambuskonstruktionen gibt es keine verbindliche Aussagen. In Bali werden laut Auskunft der Einheimischen nach sieben bis zehn Jahren viele Bauteile ausgewechselt oder es wird neu gebaut.

Unter Einhaltung bestimmter Regeln lässt sich die Haltbarkeit wesentlich verlängern.

Alle bekannten Maßnahmen beruhen auf individueller Erfahrung sowie auf Versuchen.

Gegen die größte Gefahr, den Insektenbefall, nützt ein sechswöchiges Bad in einer Borax-Salzlösung. In einigen Gebieten werden die Rohre in den Fluss gelegt, um die Stärke auszuspülen, auf die es die Insekten besonders abgesehen haben. Aber auch Schimmelbefall und Fäulnis kann bei hoher Luftfeuchtigkeit zum Problem werden. Unterschiedlichste Anwendungen wie Behandlungen mit Chemikalien oder Dieselöl, Räuchern in großen Kammern, Kochen der Naturrohre oder Dampfdruckbehandlung sind die bekanntesten Methoden. Wird Bambus geschlagen, bevor die Struktur verfestigt ist, nach dem Einschlag vor der Trocknungsprozedur zu kurz gelagert oder ist das Material von schlechten Wuchs, kann es schnell zu Rissbildungen kommen. Vorteile gegenüber dem Naturrohr bieten die von

uns entwickelten Laminate – nicht nur wegen ihrer Rissfestigkeit, sondern weil zur Konservierung eine umweltschonende Dampfbehandlung ausreicht. Wir hatten auch die Möglichkeit, mit einer Nanopartikelbeschichtung zu experimentieren. Feinste Siliziumpartikel werden auf die Oberfläche gesprüht und bilden eine unsichtbare Glasschicht. Abblätternde Lackschichten durch Bewitterung oder UV-Strahlung könnten damit der Vergangenheit angehören.

Pilotprojekt »Deutsch-Chinesisches Haus« Das »Deutsch-Chinesische Haus« steht als Abschlussprojekt der drei Jahre währenden Kampagne des Auswärtigen Amts »Deutschland und China – Gemeinsam in Bewegung«. Als Künstler eingeladen, schlug ich für die Präsentation Pavillons aus Bambus vor, da ich mit diesem faszinierenden Material seit mehr als zehn Jahren an unterschiedlichsten Rauminstallationen Erfahrungen gesammelt hatte und gemeinsam mit den Ingenieuren Knut Göppert von sbp und Mike Sieder von der TU München innovative Verbindungstechniken weiterentwickeln konnte. Gegen große Vorbehalte – in China gilt Bambus bisher noch als primitives ArmeLeute-Material – setzte sich diese Idee nach und nach durch. Es entstanden fünf unterschiedliche Grundtypen mit insgesamt 22 Einzelbauten, die in fünf chinesischen Wirtschaftsmetropolen für jeweils drei Wochen aufgestellt wurden. Die Tatsache, dass wir von den Veranstaltern in Schanghai als einziger Gemeinschaftspavillon zweier Länder einen so prominenten Platz auf dem Expo-Gelände erhielten, war nicht zuletzt eine Folge dieser guten partnerschaftlichen Zusammenarbeit. Dennoch brachten die Herausforderungen das Team an die Grenzen des Möglichen: Steht man vor ganz praktischen Fragen eines konkreten Bauvorhabens, können einem selbst die zahlreichen Forschungsinstitute, die sich mit Bambus beschäftigen, nicht weiterhelfen. Ein solches Abenteuer kann man nur mit Erfahrung, empirischen Untersuchungen, einem professionellen Planungsteam und einer gesunden Portion Selbstvertrauen bewältigen. Zu den rein

technischen Fragen, die bei jedem Prototyp auftreten, kamen noch der enorme Zeitdruck von nur sechs Monaten für Planung und Bau sowie die restriktiven Zulassungsverfahren, die die Expo-Organisatoren allen Architekten abforderten und die bei anderen Pavillons so manche Innovation verhinderten. Für Optimierungen war keine Zeit, der Teststand war das Gebäude im Maßstab 1:1 selbst. Uns hat verblüfft, dass ein Land wie China mit reicher Tradition für Bambus über keinerlei Bauspezifikationen oder Genehmigungsgrundlagen für dieses Naturmaterial verfügt, in Europa aber solche Regelungen existieren – ein Paradoxon, das in naher Zukunft für europäische Planer und Firmen von Nutzen sein könnte. Obwohl Bambus aufgrund seiner ex­ trem harten Oberflächen auch ohne Zusatzmaßnahmen über hervorragende natürliche Brandschutzeigenschaften verfügt, mussten alle Materialien zusätzlich mit einem Brandschutzlack beschichtet werden. Zu unserem Erstaunen haben die Leimbinder zunächst den Brandschutztest nicht bestanden. Der Grund lag jedoch bei der ausführenden Firma, die versehentlich einen besonders gut brennbaren Leim verwendet hatte.

Letztlich konnten wir als Team aus zahlreichen Firmen, Planern und Hochschulen in Deutschland und China viele Innovationen durchsetzen: neuartige Verbindungsknoten und Anschlüsse für die Bambusrohre, Fassadenelemente aus Bambus-Laminatholmen, die durch ihre facettierten Flächen selbststabilisierend sind, 4 m hohe BambusLeimbinder, die 6,40 m weit spannen und die die 80 m2 große Plattform für Sonderveranstaltungen tragen sowie ein neuer multifunktionaler Möbeltyp, bei dem mit wenigen Handgriffen die Sessel zur Seite gekippt zu Stehtischen werden und die aufeinander gestellten Hocker zum Rednerpult; so lässt sich die Lounge in einen Vortragsraum oder eine freie Plattform verwandeln, ohne dass ein Möbellager erforderlich wäre. Nach der Expo wanderte das »Deutsch-Chinesische Haus« ins Museumsviertel in Hangzhou – als Nachbar von Museumbauten von Herzog & de Meuron, Steven Holl und David Chipperfield.

ee A Natural High-Tech Building Material

Among the many organic building materials that exist, bamboo occupies a special place.

The plant is fast-growing and undemanding, and we managed to find a giant species on the border to Myanmar, so that the main structure of the pavilion consists of 96 columns 7.4 m long (cut from 30-metre stems) with a diameter of 22 cm at the base.

No reliable information exists on the durability of bamboo buildings. By protecting the ­material against insect attack, mould, rot and fire, its life can be considerably extended, how­ever. Bamboo can also crack if it is cut too soon or not properly matured and dried.

The laminates we have developed offer certain advantages over natural bamboo – not just because of their resistance to cracking, but because an environmentally safe steam treatment is sufficient for conservation. We ­also had the opportunity to experiment with a surface coating of silicium nanoparticles to form an invisible glass-like protective layer.

The “German-Chinese House” marks the ­conclusion of a three-year campaign by the German government with the title “Germany and China – Moving Ahead Together”. In ­collaboration with the engineers Knut Göppert of sbp and Mike Sieder of the University of Technology, Munich, it was possible to develop various innovative jointing techniques.

Five different basic types of pavilion were ­designed – a total of 22 individual structures.

These were erected in five commercial ­metropolises in China for three weeks at a time. The team faced an enormous challenge, though. As well as the technical ­questions that arise with any prototype, ­only six months were foreseen for the ­planning and construction, including the ­restrictive process of obtaining permission.

Paradoxically, despite ­China’s rich tradition in bamboo, there are no building regulations or standard procedures in that country for gaining permission to use this natural material, whereas in Europe a certificate does exist.

European designers and ­companies could take advantage of this in the future. Although bamboo has excellent fire-­resisting qualities, all elements had to be given an additional coat of fire-retardant varnish.

Last, but not least, as a team comprising firms, planners and universities in Germany and China, we were able to implement many innovations such as new node con­ nections; laminated-bamboo facade elements that are self-stabilising as a result of their ­facetted surfaces; four-metre-deep ­laminated-bamboo beams that span a distance of 6.4 m and bear the 80 m2 platform for special events; plus new multifunctional types of furniture.

After the exposition, the German-Chinese House will be moved to the Hangzhou district near museum buildings by Herzog & de ­Meuron, Steven Holl and David Chipperfield.

Die Region rund um den Kosterfjord an der schwedischen Westküste wurde 2009 zum ersten maritimen Nationalpark des Landes erklärt. Damit sich Touristen und andere ­Interessierte über die umliegende Flora und Fauna zu Lande und unter Wasser informieren können, wurde ein Besucherzentrum ein­gerichtet, das neben einem Ausstellungs- und einem Vortragsraum auch Büros für die Nationalparkverwaltung bereitstellt.

Der Neubau liegt auf Sydkoster, der größten Insel des Gebiets, und fügt sich in die kleine Hafensiedlung der Ortschaft Ekenäs ein. Ähnlich den traditionellen Bootshäusern der Umgebung bestimmen die aneinandergereihten Giebel der Hauptfassaden sein Er-

scheinungsbild. Auf diese Weise wird auch das im Verhältnis deutlich größere Volumen geschickt integriert. Durch die unregel­ mäßige Grundrissform bzw. die zueinander versetzt angeordneten Giebel von Vorderund Rückseite ergibt sich eine komplexe Dachgeometrie mit diagonalen Firstver­ läufen. Diese dreidimen­sionale Struktur ist innen als ge­faltete Decke wahrnehmbar und erzeugt ­einen spannungsvollen Raum. Die wenigen Fenster­öffnungen sind bewusst ­gesetzt und rahmen die umgebende Landschaft wie ein Ausstellungsstück. Das Material Holz ist allgegenwärtig. Innen ist das Gebäude komplett mit Holz ausgekleidet: Der Boden besteht aus Kiefernholz, Decken

und Wände besitzen eine Oberfläche aus einer lasierten Fichtenschalung. Außen kommt die gleiche Schalung als Fassadenverkleidung und Dachdeckung zum Einsatz.

Hier wurde sie jedoch zusätzlich mit Holzteer behandelt und in dem typisch schwe­ dischen Dunkelrot gestrichen, sodass sich das Besucherzentrum auch farblich harmonisch in die Umgebung einfügt. Ökologische Kriterien spielten bei der Planung eine große Rolle. Bei einem prognostizierten Verbrauch von 40 kWh/m2a nutzt der Bau Geothermie und Strom aus erneuerbaren Energien. Darüber hinaus sind alle verwendeten Materialien frei von Schadstoffen.

In 2009, the region surrounding the Koster­ fjord on Sweden’s west coast was named a national maritime park, the country’s first. A new visitor centre has been set up to assist tourists and other interested persons in gath­ ering information on the flora and fauna – both above and below the water’s surface. In addi­ tion to an exhibition space and a lecture hall, it also has offices for the administration of the national park.

The new building is in Ekenäs, a small port town on the island Sydkoster, the largest in the area; it has been carefully inserted in the town’s existing fabric. Like the traditional boat­ houses nearby, gables are lined up one next to the other; these define the appearance of the

visitor centre. In this manner the architects were able to integrate building massing that is considerably larger than the other buildings.

The irregular form of the building footprint and the shift between the gables on the two long sides of the building create a complex roof ­geometry in which the ridges run at diagonals.

The three-dimensional structure is visible ­inside the building; it creates an intriguing inte­ rior space. There are only a small number of windows, and the utmost care was taken in determining their positions: they frame the ­surrounding landscape, making it appear to be part of the exhibition.

Wood is ubiquitous in the visitor centre. The interior of the building is completely clad in it.

The floor is of pine, and softwood boarding with a scumbled finish cloaks the ceilings and walls. The facades and the roof are also clad with the same softwood boarding, but were treated with tar and painted the dark red typi­ cal of Sweden for these uses. This colour con­ cept by the architects is another design deci­ sion that allows the visitor centre to blend in with its surroundings.

Ecological criteria also played an important role in the planning. The expected energy con­ sumption per annum of 40 kWh/m2 is to be ­attained through the use of geothermal energy and electricity from renewable sources. On top of that, all materials employed in the building are free of toxins.

Ein 42 m langer Steg verbindet den am Ost­ ufer des Bodensees gelegenen Pfahlbau mit dem angrenzenden Naherholungsgebiet. Übersetzt in die moderne Formensprache Vorarlberger Architektur führt das Badehaus die über hundertjährige Tradition dieses Gebäudetypus am »Schwäbischen Meer« erfolgreich fort. Auf 30 Rundstützen und einer Plattform aus Stahlbeton ruht ein schlichter, eingeschossiger Baukörper. Er beherbergt neben Umkleiden, Duschen und Sanitärräumen einen rundum verglasten Restaurantbereich mit nach Südwesten orientierter Terrasse, von der eine Treppe auf das großzügige Sonnendeck führt. Die zahlreichen Faltläden in der äußeren und Glasschiebetüren in der

inneren Fassadenebene erlauben eine flexi­ ble Nutzung von maximaler Öffnung bis hin zu hermetischer Abgeschlossenheit. Holz als Konstruktions- und Ausbaumaterial prägt das Erscheinungsbild: Sowohl die Stützen und Träger als auch die Fassade, sämtliche Böden und die Deckenschalung im Café bestehen aus unbehandelter Weißtanne vom heimischen Pfänderstock, die dem Wetter ausgesetzt natürlich altern wird. Das Energie­ konzept sieht eine kontrollierte Be- und Entlüftung mit Wärmerückgewinnung vor. Eine Luftwärmepumpe dient in der kalten Jahreszeit zur Vortemperierung der Zuluft, um eine rasche Erwärmung des Gastronomiebereichs zu ermöglichen. DETAIL 01– 02/2012

This bathhouse in western Austria offers spectacular views of the Lake Constance and the foothills of the Swiss Alps. A 42-metrelong pier connects the structure to the shore.

Resting atop the platform – which is supported by 30 columns – is a single-storey structure housing a glazed restaurant (whose ­terrace provides access to the sun deck), as well as changing rooms, showers and WCs. Wood plays the leading role: the columns, beams, cladding, floors and decks are all made of it. In a nod to sustainability the architects worked with untreated ­silver fir from nearby forests. The energy concept incorporates heat-recovery and an air-to-air heat pump.

Auf dem Weg vom Norddalsfjord in das Bergsteigerörtchen Andalsnes lädt die viel begangene Schlucht Gudbrandsjuvet zum Verweilen ein. In ihrem ­oberen Abschnitt ­bieten die ebenfalls von Jensen & Skodvin gestalteten Aussichtsplattformen spektaku­ läre Blicke auf den tosenden Fluss. Unten im Tal entstand, geleitet von dem Gedanken, den Gästen die Natur so nahe wie möglich zu bringen, das »Landschaftshotel Juvet«.

In Form einfacher Pavillons liegen die Zim­ mer verteilt auf dem Gelände eines ehe­ maligen Bauernhofs. Was zunächst beliebig erscheint, ist Ergebnis einer sorgfältigen ­Planung. Jede der sieben Hütten nimmt durch ihren individuellen Grundriss Rück­ sicht auf Vegetation und Topografie und ermöglicht gleichzeitig dem Besucher eine unverstellte, einzigartige Aussicht. Die raumhohen Panoramafenster setzen mal den Fluss und die Berge in Szene, mal ­zeigen sie meditative Kompositionen aus Felsen und Farnen.

Die Wahl des Konstruktionsmaterials fiel leicht: Mit Holz als natürlichem, günstigem und überall verfügbarem Baustoff griffen die Architekten die Tradition der norwegischen Fjellhytten auf. Wände, Boden und Decke bestehen aus Brettstapelholz; eine zusätzli­ che Wärmedämmung fehlt fast vollständig, da die Pavillons nur zur Sommernutzung vorgesehen sind. Eine vertikal laufende ­Kiefernholzlattung bildet die Fassade. Mit Eisensulfat gestrichen wird sie bald die silb­ rige Färbung verwitternden Holzes anneh­ men und so Gebäude und Wald optisch miteinander verschmelzen lassen.

Den Innenraum bestimmen dunkle Farben: Die Holzoberflächen sind mit schwarz ­pigmentiertem Öl behandelt, den Boden bedeckt ein brauner Teppich. Spartanische Einbauten – Tisch, Bänke und Regale – aus ebenfalls dunkel lasiertem Kiefernholz üben sich in Bescheidenheit. So werden störende Spiegelungen auf der Glasfläche vermieden und nichts lenkt die Aufmerksam­ keit von der Natur ab. Sollte eines Tages die Architektur nicht mehr gebraucht werden, bleiben nur ein paar Gründungs­löcher im Granit zurück.

On the way from the Norddalsfjord to the mountaineering community of Andalsnes, the popular and picturesque Gudbrandsjuvet gorge invites travellers to linger awhile. Platforms designed by the architects offer spectacular views of the upper reaches of the roaring river; and inspired by the idea of bringing visitors as close as possible to nature, the Juvet Landscape Hotel was created in the valley below.

The hotel rooms are housed in a number of simple pavilions scattered about the area of a former farm. What may at first sight appear to be a random arrangement is, in fact, the outcome of careful design. Each of the seven pavilions takes account of the vegetation and

topography in the form of its individual layout, as a result of which visitors enjoy unique, unimpeded views of the landscape. Some of the full-height panorama windows frame superb prospects of the river and the mountains; in other cases, the scenes of rocks and vegetation are conducive to contemplation.

The choice of material was simple. With timber an economical option that was readily available in the area, the architects adopted the tradition of the Norwegian fjell huts. The walls, floors and ceilings consist of vertically stacked plank slabs. Additional thermal insulation was hardly used, since the pavilions are occupied only in the summer months. The facade consists of vertical pine strips. Painted

with iron sulphate, the wood soon acquired the silvery coloration of weathered timber, so that the buildings merge harmoniously with the surrounding forest. Internally, the coloration is predominantly dark: the wood surfaces were treated with black-pigmented oil, while the floor finish consists of brown carpeting.

The furnishing is spartan. A table, benches and some shelves, also in dark pine with a scumbled finish, are a token of restraint. In this way, disturbing reflections on the glass surface are avoided, and nothing distracts from the natural surroundings. If these structures should no longer be needed one day, all that will remain after their removal are a few 11 foundation borings in the granite.

»Beim Bauen ließen wir uns Zeit«, so die ­Architekten, die den größten Teil der Kons­ truktion, darunter die Holzarbeiten von Fuß­ boden und Fassaden, in Eigenarbeit errich­ tet haben. Den Anfang nahm das Projekt im familieneigenen Wald im österreichichen Schwarzenberg. Im Dezember, in den Ta­ gen vor Neumond, machten sie sich auf, um das Holz zu schlagen, im benachbarten Hittisau zu sägen und dort einige Monate an der Luft trocknen zu lassen. Die Restfeuchte wurde dem Holz in der Trockenkammer ent­ zogen. Von insgesamt 20 Fichten und 40 Tannen kamen nicht nur die besten Stücke, sondern die ganzen Bäume für die Tragkon­ struktion, Wände, Türen und Böden zur Ver­

wendung. So entstanden reizvolle, lebhafte Strukturen: Der Riemenboden besteht aus 2 Holzdielen sehr unterschiedlicher Länge von e 40 cm bis zu 5 m in1 sechs variierenden Brei­ ten. Die Architekten verwendeten3keine in­ dustriellen oder verklebten Produkte wie Brettschichtholz, Werkstoffplatten oder Gips­ karton. In den diagonalen Vollschalungen a b der Konstruktion konnten sie auch minder­ wertiges Restholz einsetzen. Das einfache Tragwerk aus Holzelementen besteht aus Fichtenholz, der Riemenboden aus band­ sägerauer Weißtanne, für Verkleidungen von Wand und Decke wurde die Tanne glatt ge­ schliffen. Für Außenfassade und Terrassen­ dielen wählten die Architekten Lärchenholz

In the words of the architects, “We took our time with the construction,” for they executed a lot of the building work themselves, such as the wooden floors and facades.

The project had its beginnings in the family’s own woodland in Schwarzenberg. In the days before the December new moon, they set about felling the trees, sawing the timber in nearby Hittisau and leaving it there to season for some months. Further excess moisture was removed in a drying kiln. Not just the best timber was used from the 20 spruce and 40 fir trees that were needed; the entire stems were exploited for the load-bearing structure, the walls, doors and floors. This accounts for the attractive, lively textures in the house.

The strip flooring consists of boards of quite different lengths (from 40 cm to 5 m) and in six different widths. The architects did not use any industrial or adhesively produced materials, such laminated timber, nor mineral-based panels like gypsum plasterboard.

In areas of diagonal boarding for the structure, it was possible to apply less qualitative residual wood. Spruce members were used for the simple, timber load-bearing structure, and bandsawn silver fir for the boarded floors.

Where used as linings to walls and soffits, the fir boards were planed smooth. As boarding to the facades and terraces, larch was chosen from woodland belonging to friends in Graubünden, Switzerland.

While excavating the cellar, a layer of loam was discovered. This proved to be useful as a thermal storage mass in the floors. The loam was pressed into blocks, which were air dried and laid in intermediate spaces with bearers on top to support the boarded floor. Heating runs were laid in grooves in the blocks.

The simple craft techniques associated with timber construction, consisting of a number of layers screwed together and used in the roof, facade and floor, are no longer common today because of the great amount of time and materials needed. By executing the finishings by oneself, however, these methods can be applied without any problem – and what’s more, the structure will be easy to dismantle again.

Wie ein filigranes Origami-Faltwerk stehen die sechs geheimnisvollen hölzernen Kokons vor den Toren der kanadischen Stadt im Schnee. Im Zentrum Winnipegs, einer der kältesten Metropolen der Welt, wo die Temperaturen im Winter monatelang auf durchschnittlich -20 °C sinken, fließen der Red River und der Assiniboine River zusammen. Sobald deren Oberfläche gefriert, entstehen kilometerlange Eisflächen, die die Einwohner zum Eislaufen, Eishockeyspielen und Spazierengehen nutzen. Unter den temporären Dächern können sie sich, geschützt vor Wind und Wetter, ausruhen.

Jedes Schutzdach besteht aus 5 mm dicken, gebogenen Sperrholzplatten, die die formgebende und tragende Hülle zugleich darstellen. Keilförmige Kanthölzer an Basis, First und Rückgrat stabilisieren die nach ­einem Schnittmuster erstellten Platten.

Schrauben verbinden die Elemente an den überlappenden Kanten zu einer kontinuier­ lichen Fläche. Der Schnee gleitet von den geölten, steilen Oberflächen ab. In zahlreichen Experimenten an Proto­typen erarbei­ teten die Architekten die optimale Biegung der Platten. Einschnitte, Lochungen und ­Öffnungen mindern zu hohe Spannungen im hauchdünnen Material.

Die sechs Kokons wenden sich einander paarweise mit ihren Öffnungen im 60°-Winkel zu, ganz wie die lockeren Gruppen ihrer plaudernden Besucher.

DETAIL 10/2011 Six mysterious wooden cocoons stand in the snow like fine origami folded structures outside the Canadian city of Winnipeg, near the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers.

As soon as the rivers freeze, kilometre long tracks and other areas are formed, which ­residents use for ice skating, ice hockey and walking. In recent times, the public has also been able to rest beneath temporary roofs that provide protection against the wind and weather. Wedge-shaped edge strips at the “base”, “ridge” and “spine” help to stabilise the sheets, for which the architects developed an optimum bending curvature. Cut-outs, holes and openings help to reduce excessive tensions in the wafer-thin material.
