Welcome to the May issue. May promises to be a very busy month. There are numerous outdoor events, including concerts and festivals, farmer’s markets, and sporting events to attend. In downtown Statesville, the PHC Friday After Five concerts begin a new season on May 4. Mooresville has their annual Race City Festival on May 12 as they welcome thousands of folks to downtown for this event. The second Sunday in May is set aside to honor the wonderful women who are terrific mothers and role models. Be sure to celebrate this special day with your mom, and let her know just how much she means to you. Thank you, Moms, for all you do every day! We remember our military men and women from all wars who gave the ultimate sacrifice on Memorial Day, which comes on May 28 this year. Their heroism and bravery is hard for us to fathom as they defended our freedoms. Let us never forget them. Until next month, thank you for reading the May issue of Iredell Living Magazine!

The Best Mother’s Day Gift By Kathy Wheeler

©iStockphoto.com | AndreaObzerova

Sunday, May 13th is Mother’s Day and an opportunity to let your Mom know how much you love and appreciate her, although, this should be more than a once a year event. We all know the things our mothers have done for us in a practical sense, and may recognize many sacrifices they have made, from staying up all night when we ran a fever to doing our laundry and cooking our meals, or taking us to after-school activities and making sure we had what we needed to participate in those activities. What we probably don’t know are the internal struggles they have had walking a fine line between giving us our freedom while trying to keep us safe. I used to tell my children that I wanted them to have as much fun as possible; I just wanted to make sure they were safe while doing whatever they wanted to do. That worked for a while until I made them vests out of an old comforter 8

IREDELL LIVING • MAY 2018

before they attended a paint ball park. They patronized me and took the vests, but after their friends almost laughed them off the bus, they threw them away, swearing they would never listen to me again. We moms struggle between protecting and preparing our children, between letting them learn from their mistakes and preventing them from making mistakes that could have dire consequences. We moms don’t always make the wisest choices, but we always have our children’s best interests at heart.

So, just know this: a mother’s input lessens as we grow up to the point that her advice is no longer needed, but her internal struggle never stops. She may not express her opinion anymore, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have one. It doesn’t mean that she has stopped looking out for your best interest or stopped being concerned about the decisions you make or your safety. It just means that she is silently observing, waiting for you to ask for her opinion, and trying so hard not to interfere.

I often think of my own mother and how she was able to keep her sanity while raising five children without cell phones. If we wanted to call and check in, we had to call from someone’s home or from a phone booth. I don’t think she had much faith in me to make good decisions. After all, I gave her no reason to trust my judgement, but she had faith in a higher power to keep me safe. She no longer gives me curfews or rules to break, but she is still concerned about my life decisions.

This Mother’s Day, let her know how much you appreciate her love and lifelong effort to encourage your success and support you emotionally while you pursue your endeavors. Ask her advice occasionally; you may be surprised at what she has to offer. Most of all, make her proud by being the best you that you can be. The happiness and success of her children is a large part of her life’s work and the best Mother’s Day gift around!

Beautiful Lawns for Everyone By Kristie Darling

Spring is here, finally! I bet you’ve been checking out flats of flowers and tubs of bushes to plant around the house and patio. It’s hard to resist. Your lawn, on the other hand…have you thought about getting your lawn up to speed with your flower beds? For those of us who just settle for a spotty, weed-filled yard—help is here, and I am happy to say, I’m signing up! I met with Cameron and Leighann Williams, who own Bio Green of Charlotte/Lake Norman, and I’m impressed. Cameron has guaranteed me that even my yard, one that hasn’t received much TLC in a very long time,

can be healthy, green, and beautiful— with his professional help. All in a very affordable manner. EXPERIENCE, EXPERTISE, EXCELLENT PRODUCTS Cameron comes by his skills honestly. “My grandpa and uncles were entrepreneurs who built golf courses,” he explained, “and that’s all about grass. I started with my own contract mowing business when I was 16 and graduated from NC State’s Turfgrass Management program at Catawba Valley Community College. And, I did an internship

at Statesville Country Club while I was in school.” All in all, Cameron is a third-generation grass guy with about 10 years’ experience keeping it healthy, green, and growing. “I love knowing my customers pull into their driveways and enjoy a bank of beautiful, green grass,” he said. Cameron and his bride of eight years, Leighann, who is a former Air National Guard SrA, purchased the Charlotte/Lake Norman Bio Green franchise in 2016 with plans for a thriving business. “We service some very nice lake homes, large properties in northern Iredell County, and lots in between.

There’s no minimum size yard, and we don’t require a contract. Our trucks are all over town,” Leighann told me. “We’re proud to be part of a change to more environmentally safe products. As an all-natural, odor-free lawn care and fertilization service, we help protect people, pets, wildlife, and even our lakes. Our products are on the USDA bio-preferred list.” FREE LAWN EVALUATION “We begin with new customers by walking their property, taking note of the lawn’s condition, and also examining landscape plants, shrubs, and trees,” Cameron continued. “We’re looking for issues we can help with, like stressed areas in the lawn that aren’t growing well, insects, weeds, diseases, and nutrient deficiency. We assess what type of grass you have and how healthy it is. We’ll test the soil—we don’t waste time guessing—and ask questions to find out what your goals are and what your budget is. With this information, we can give you options for weed control, soil nourishment, over-seeding with the right seed for our area, and winterizing to get ready for next spring’s growing season, all designed to match your budget at different price points. We’ll recommend up to seven services annually, but our visits are customized to your lawn and landscape, with on-call treatments as needed. I like to design a plan suited to your needs throughout the year.”

Photos:

Above and opposite page Bio Green products make any lawn lush and beautiful; however, the products used are especially great for lake front property because they are environmentally safe and biologically sound with no harmful chemical runoff. Family health is also an excellent reason for using Bio Green’s safe natural fertilizer. (Photos provided by Bio Green) 14

IREDELL LIVING • MAY 2018

Because Bio Green is local, they’re competitively priced to their customers’ favor. “We stay in touch between service calls to make sure all is going well,” Cameron explained. “Whether you mow and water or hire a service, we’re a great partner. In fact, we work with many area landscapers. We’re always available if you have questions about our service, products, the health of your lawn and landscape—about anything. At each service call, we’ll walk your property again to make sure all is going according to plan. Big box stores and large chemical companies don’t do that.” Emergency service calls are critical if something comes up, and Cameron guarantees 48-hour service.

NATURALLY, A BEAUTIFUL LAWN Cameron’s customers appreciate the environmentally safe, biologically sound Bio Green fertilizer and other products that he applies throughout the year. Spring is the time to apply pre-emergent to prevent weeds from taking over. Cameron’s team treats and eliminates brown patches in summer. Fall is time for seeding, and Bio Green germinator encourages new seedlings to develop. Winterizing in December will keep your lawn nourished until spring when your new grass really takes off. Much safer fertilizers are available for families who want that for their lawn and landscape. Sensitivities, pets, and caring for children’s play areas are good reasons to ask Cameron about this. A quick outline of this and other service options is available at www.biogreennc.com. Cameron explained that easy changes can make a big difference in the health and beauty of your lawn. “Often, when landowners spray with fertilizer they bought at the hardware store, they’re only getting to what’s above ground,” he said. “Our natural fertilizer is complete—a macro and micronutrient package for turf, bedding plants, trees, and shrubs. It gets into the soil, feeds the roots, improves fertility, builds topsoil, and encourages steady growth. Our products do much more than chemicals.” Bio Green is especially needed with our red clay soil. With an on-going schedule designed for our climate and your specific lawn, your plants become healthier over time. After a couple of seasons, you won’t need to do as much. You’ll see better results than you’ve seen before.

healthy, with strong roots and proper nourishment, they become more drought and disease resistant. Bio Green products for plants and trees offer the same effective natural ingredients as turf products. And, just like taking care of lawns, Cameron can evaluate shrubs and trees and recommend a suitable care schedule. RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL EXPERTISE “Cameron provides excellent customer care; he’s a loyal vendor,” DAS Architecture’s owner, Dane Suchoza, told me. “He services a number of my properties throughout the area, and I appreciate his professional management. He’s energetic, and I like his entrepreneurial spirit.” Businesses of all types and sizes want to make a good first impression, and Bio Green’s corporate customers appreciate how great their grass looks all year. Cameron’s team can manage any size property and service the trees, flower beds, and lawns. LOVE YOUR LAWN! Cameron’s best advice for keeping your lawn looking great? First, don’t mow short! Grass should be cut about four inches high or more. Second, only water in the morning! Don’t put your grass to bed wet. And, third, water and mow regularly. “What you do in between our service calls makes a big difference in how well our products perform,” he explained. Put Bio Green’s natural products to work in your yard, and you’ll be showing it off to everyone. Like I said, I’m signing up!

A full, deep green lawn is the result. I’m beginning to believe even my yard could become Better Homes and Gardens material.

Call Leighann and Cameron now. Spring is the perfect time to turn over a new leaf, so to speak, and bring your lawn and landscapes beautifully to life. Soon, all our yards will be House and Gardens beautiful!

FLOWERS, SHRUBS AND TREES More often than not, if your lawn needs good nutrition, your flowers, bushes, and trees do, too. When these plants are

Spring Cleaning for Happiness By Lauren Davidson

©iStockphoto.com | Ridofranz

Spring has sprung and not a moment too soon! I don’t know about you, but for me, it seemed as if winter would never end. Any remotely sunny day (even if it was 45 degrees) meant that my fiancé and I were outside pressure washing the house, painting the shutters, you name it. It’s our third year of home ownership, and even though it feels like we’ve done so much already, when this time of year rolls around, our brains go into a frenzy thinking up all the things that we’d like to do to improve our humble abode. Lately, it feels like Lowe’s, Home Depot, and Walmart have become our second homes—I’ve even struck up quite a friendship with the sales woman at the paint desk in Lowe’s. I love this time of year. It may have happened a little later this year, but I won’t complain that we finally have 16

IREDELL LIVING • MAY 2018

some warm weather. My favorite part of spring cleaning is getting rid of everything I don’t need anymore (or, let’s face it, everything that doesn’t fit anymore) and starting fresh. It’s hard to let go of things sometimes, but it’s also a part of life. I’ve experienced this in more ways than one this spring. I’ve renewed old friendships and let go of ones that didn’t serve me. I left a job that was soul-sucking and started one that allows me to flex my creativity. Although all of this transition led me to a sunnier, more positive place, the changes themselves were scary. But it’s important to recognize when things aren’t working anymore and decide if it’s worth your time to stick it out or to move on. During this time of major transitions in my life, I kept clinging to the old saying, “When one door closes, another opens.” At some moments, it was hard to see the

light at the end of the tunnel, but I had to hold on to that belief to get through the challenging times, or I would’ve given up and continued to be miserable. Just like spring cleaning, I had to recognize that some of the things I was keeping were holding me back, and others needed to be unpacked from that dusty old box in the far corner of the closet. Life is ever-changing, which to me means that it’s crucial to live in the present every moment. Enjoy happy times to the very fullest, and if one day you look up and realize that you’re unhappy, it’s okay to reboot. Let go of what doesn’t fit. Life will continue to evolve and unfold into different paths that you may have never seen. Give yourself permission to do a little spring cleaning. The days of summer sunshine are bound to come around soon.

One happy customer wrote on Facebook, “My 11-year-old Denali is driving fine, but the interior 18

The leather seats have been renewed and all stains cleaned out of the carpet. The wax job has brightened the exterior. I am happy to say that I will not be trading this car in anytime soon.” Staying current with the latest advancements in painting and repairing vehicles is one way Alan makes sure to keep customers happy. “When new technology comes out, we take classes to learn about it,” he said. Detailing is one component to the business, and collision repair is the other. DNA Collison & Detail can replace or repair vehicle parts damaged in a wreck and use their expertise to guarantee paint matching. “If you’ve damaged your vehicle, and you’re worried about the paint matching, bring it to us. We guarantee paint matching,” Alan said. “We don’t use excuses like ‘those bumpers are plastic and you can’t make them match,’ or ‘you just can’t match the paint on those imports.’ We have the very best computer-controlled Valspar Automotive paint mixing system and a state of the art Blowthem USA paint booth to make sure your car’s paint comes out perfect.” The industry recognizes the quality of work from DNA Collision & Detail. They have built show quality vehicles for

customers that have won awards, including Outstanding Paint, Best of Class, Best of Show, and many first- and second-place awards in various classes. “We are very particular about all the details, not just on show cars, but for any customer,” Alan said. “We strive to make any customer’s vehicle look as good or better than new in everything we do to them.”

Nothing says spring or summer like beautiful flowers! Simple and cost effective, annuals can brighten any curb appeal on any budget. Needing inspiration? Proven Winners makes it easy! Each year they produce The Gardener’s Idea Book for the asking. Visit their website at provenwinners.com and request it to be mailed to you, sign up for their newsletter, or get recipes for container gardens and flower beds.

SUPERTUNIA VISTA® Fuchsia Petunia (24 Plants)

One of my favorites is container gardens and the quickest way to add color to any outdoor space. They make a perfect Mother’s Day gift, and will bring Mom a full season of joy. Mixing flowers and greenery in one large pot creates a small garden of its own, however, filling a pot with a single annual and grouping the pots work just as well.

LEMON CORAL™ Sedum (10 Plants)

LADY GODIVA™ Orange Calendula, SUPERBELLS® Garden Rose Calibrachoa, DAHLIGHTFUL® CRUSHED CRIMSON™ Dahlia, SUMMER SHANDY™ Humulus (Hops Vine), Pardon My Lavender Monarda (Bee Balm), SUPERTUNIA® BORDEAUX™ Petunia, Golden Delicious Salvia, Tangerine Slice A-PEEL® Thunbergia, planted along with herbs and vegetables.

Flower beds are a little more work, and depending on their size, can be a lot of work, but they don’t have to be complicated. Large areas of the same blooms accented with greenery can be striking in their simplicity. Prefer planting something edible? Herb gardens are useful and can be a landscape feature by edging with pretty pavers. The French call this kitchen garden a potager. Whatever you decide to plant this season, I hope you enjoy digging in the dirt, the fresh air, and the fruits of your labor.

SOUL FOOD: Taking A Gulp of Life By Emily Buckley

A common mantra passed down by generations of doctors, nutritional experts, and disapproving parents claims, “You are what you eat.” Often this can be a harsh reality check on our health, stamina, and even appearance. We begin to evaluate what we are feeding ourselves and the positive or negative effects certain substances yield. Sometimes it is necessary to cut something out. Other times our body is deficient and starved of vitamins and nutrients. Much in the same manner, we must examine the condition of our inner psyche.

my mind and physical being to the life that was swelling around me. After wrestling with lethargy, restlessness, and exhaustion I realized I needed to invest my time into the things that awakened my spirit.

When I first began making an intentional effort to feed my soul, I was shocked at how malnourished I’d allowed it to become. When faced with downtime, I’d plug myself into a multitude of distractions such as social media, movies, or electronic games. Entertaining and relaxing? Sure. While these tools can be used in valuable ways, I slowly found myself numbing

The first time I explored a popular waterfall by myself was both daunting and exhilarating. Through this process of nurturing the psyche, we are more capable of reflection, which allows us to learn many lessons. Since that day, I’ve uncovered astounding “happy places” in the landscape that I can visit to rejuvenate and feel fulfilled. I’ve also

Initially, it can be difficult. Often we make the mistake of thinking we aren’t prepared or that we can’t experience our passions independently. In this way, however, we can minister to our soul from within. We unearth strengths we may otherwise live our entire lives unaware that we possess.

discovered that nature has a habit of turning fear into great admiration. Nutrition for the soul does not have to be complex. For some, a pen and paper will suffice. For others rhythm, motion, and dance is a full-course meal. Some feel the most alive when their hands are stained with paint or clay. For some, it’s the peace of a summer rain. My friends—whether it’s when we’re traveling, indulging our creative sides, or simply pushing past our comfort zones—these are the foods we must consciously devour for endurance and longevity. We can’t be passionate to the fullest about our goals and dreams until we are self-passionate in inner care. Let’s not ignore the present! Do the things you need to do in order to build a healthy spirit, body, and mind. After all, we are what we eat.

I A WORD FROM

The Longest Table

David Bradley President and CEO Greater Statesville Chamber of Commerce

IREDELL LIVING • MAY 2018

am a creature of habit. I seek out those things in which I have found comfort. In our living room, I sit in the same chair, virtually every day, when we watch television. If we go to one of our favorite restaurants, it is not abnormal for me to order the same thing time after time. Ashamedly, when I walk into a room crowded with people, I will flock to those I know and with whom I have a comfortable relationship. For me to do something different would require me to be very intentional. Yet, I am ALWAYS surprised at how being intentional about meeting new people makes me more whole. On May 22, the United Way of Iredell County will host “The Longest Table” from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Statesville High School. United Way’s Executive Director Brett Eckerman noted, “We are looking for the opportunity to bring our community and its citizens together. Great conversations are often realized around the dinner table. We expect to place our participants around tables with people they might not know in order to better understand and appreciate each other.” The event’s Facebook page notes, “Neighbors of all income levels, ethnicity types, and beliefs will have a common table to foster new friendships in Iredell County. Building the basic introduction to new individuals can add to everyone’s confidence and ability to reach out to one another and bridge gaps in future community planning decisions.” There is no cost to attend and have dinner. Upon arrival, you will be given a table number and directions on where to sit. Be prepared to be separated from

your friends and family and meet new people. “Our hope is to build a network of new friends and to have intentional conversations that we might not have otherwise. Through this, we will make this community stronger on a grassroots level,” Brett noted. Wait! There will be great food, wonderful conversation, and the event is FREE? Thanks to the generosity of Cheney Brothers, one of Statesville’s most recent business partners, there will be no cost to attend. Cheney Brothers is a food distributor that serves customers throughout the Southeast and is currently expanding its existing facility to almost 300,000 square feet. They will employ more than 200 people. President Rick Stapleton said, “Cheney Brothers is delighted to help sponsor The Longest Table. We believe that investing in our community is an important part of being a good neighbor! This event allows us an opportunity to do just that, while supporting something that also aligns with our values as a company. We want to do everything we can to help make Statesville the best place possible to call home. We are also very pleased to be working with Grill 4 God Ministries in preparing an extraordinary meal for people from every area of our community.” Longest Table meals have been around for a few years. THIS event, however, can be one of a different magnitude with as many as 500 people dining together! The value of having that many people committed to breaking bread and knocking down the barriers that separate us is limitless. To register for the event, please go to: bit.ly/2018longesttable

A WORD FROM

2018 Race City Festival

Kirk Ballard President and CEO Mooresville - South Iredell Chamber of Commerce 30

IREDELL IREDELL LIVING LIVING •• MAY MAY 2018 2018

T

he 2018 Race City Festival is celebrating its 35th anniversary. On May 12, we welcome food trucks and more than 20,000 people to downtown Mooresville.

As the world becomes more connected and people care more and more about their food and the environment, locally produced ingredients are making a huge impact on food trucks this year.

Today, a new generation of food lovers is lining up at food trucks and food carts like never before. Like so many other popular trends attracting millennials, food trucks are the latest version of an older part of American history and world culture. Food trucks have been on the streets, in neighborhood pods, and private events for years. Coming on strong in 2018 are food trucks paired with beverage makers for a full meal in one stop. Wineries, breweries, and distilleries are partnering with food truckers, making food and drink choices easy. Food truckers are becoming more creative as a result of tight vending regulation, overcrowding of food trucks, and new ideas to serve consumers.

Rain or shine, the festival itself starts on Saturday, May 12th and runs from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Main Street and Broad Street will be closed to traffic between Iredell and McLelland Avenues. Filling the street will be a colorful festival of food trucks, crafts, games, and entertainment. With nearly 200 vendors, this year’s festival will be complete with a children’s entertainment area, dance troupes, live music, aerobic martial arts performances, a variety of arts and crafts, and even a spotlight on locally grown produce and products. Entertainment will be provided throughout the day with the main stage offering various performances. The main stage will be positioned on Broad Street in the food truck court and beer garden area near the Mooresville Christian Mission. Because we are a racing community, NASCAR will spotlight race cars and historic automobiles from some of our motorsports museums and other participating vendors. Pick up a racing collectable or a beautiful piece of locally produced artwork. There will be family fun and food for everyone.

Local means everything in food in 2018. The new twist to mobile food menu favorites is locally grown ingredients. Food truckers are turning to suppliers that are partnering with local growers and producers, and even stepping into farming or artisanal preserving themselves. The benefit? Strong flavors, wholesome ingredients, more connections between consumers, food truckers, and producers. Where was that fish caught? Who grew those salad greens? Who made that amazing strawberry jam, or pickles, or bread?

The 2018 festival welcomes young and old to downtown Mooresville. Everyone will be there. You should be there, too!
