West End Retailers Give Back

Minnesotans are renowned for being charitable civic leaders. The retailers at The Shops at West End are no different. They recognize that donating time and money to support local charities influences the community in a positive way. By Sarah Howard

Anthropologie As a company that thrives on artists and creativity, the retailer has created The Anthropologist. Founded in 2009, this virtual workspace allows for the creative process to be followed and for inspiring artists to post their work. The goal: to expose the passions and pursuits of artists. Charming Charlie In the month of October, Charming Charlie began the 3,000 accessory challenge. For every hat, scarf or pair of earrings purchased during the month, Charming Charlie will donate one of those same items to Look Good Feel Better, a non-profit organization that helps women battling cancer deal with the appearance-related side effects of battling the disease.

Pink Champagne

CRAVE In 2010, CRAVE Cares raised $100,000 for local charities, and it’s on track to exceed that in 2011. The local chain has a committee made up of managers, servers, other team members, and the owners, that meets every month to decide which charity Crave will sponsor that month. To raise funds, the restaurant features a Crave Cares menu featuring local cuisine, and a percentage is donated to the charity. Crave also has a corporate matching program, and patrons can donate right to charities on their check.

Omaha Steaks

lululemon athletica

The fifth-generation, family-owned business strives to give back to the community. In October 2011, the meat retailer paired with Susan G. Komen for the Cure with the promise that throughout the next year Omaha Steaks would donate 10 percent of the purchase price of select steak combinations to the foundation, with a minimum donation of $25,000. The ‘Raising the Steaks’ program features such combos as The Hope Package and The Cause Collection.

As part of the charitable giving program at lululemon, up to eight charities are chosen for the store to support. Events, donations and special programs are put into place to raise money. Customers are very involved in the process — they help decide which charities should be supported!

Creative KidStuff The children’s company’s Gift Card Give Back program allows customers to buy a gift card for a non-profit that they would like to support. The local charities all affect the well-being of youth and improvement of children’s lives, including Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare, Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota, Washburn Center for Children, Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Minneapolis, and more. You select the dollar amount and the quantity of cards you’d like to give. For every $250 donated, Creative KidStuff will kick in an extra $50 gift card.

Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill Ladies nights is even more fun when the proceeds are going to a good cause. Every Wednesday, from 7 p.m. to midnight, ladies get drink specials with a $5 wristband and the entire cost is donated to the Minnesota affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation.

Rainbow Foods Owned by Milwaukee-based Roundy’s, the grocer is tied to The Roundy’s Foundation, which supports non-profit organizations committed to creating strong families and communities. The foundation focuses on three efforts: hunger relief, helping families in crisis and aiming to end illiteracy.

The trendy boutique pairs up with the nonprofit Soles4Souls, a shoe charity that donates shoes to adults and children in need. From now until Friday, December 16, donate a pair of new or slightly used shoes or boots and receive 30 percent off any one item. Plus, for every pair that is brought in by customers, Pink Champagne will donate $1 to Soles4Souls, which is enough to provide shoes for one person in need. For two weeks in October, Pink Champagne partnered with ICON Services Corp., a security company offering bodyguards to celebrities (and pro-bono to battered women’s shelters), to donate 10 percent of sales to local battered women’s shelters.

The Shops at West End Since opening in 2009, The Shops at West End has raised thousands of dollars for local charities through their themed community events. The shopping center has raised funds for Greater Minneapolis Crisis Nursery, St. Louis Park Emergency Program (STEP), Courage Center, Children First, St. Louis Park Kid’s Place, JOBS Foundation, and local band and choral programs. In 2012, The Shops at West End will again be raising funds for local charities at events throughout the year.

West End Retailers Give Back Subway Subway employees picked 10 charitable organizations for 2011 company donation. “Team Subway” – their employees, franchisees, developers and staff around the world - has a long history of giving back to their communities and helping those in need. Whether it’s collecting supplies for a local animal shelter or helping franchisees and neighbors recover from a natural disaster, these folks always come through big. So, when it came time to decide on a charitable organization to donate $100,000 to, it only made sense to put it to the entire team. Organizations who received donations this year included: Doctors Without Borders, Feed the Children, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, UNICEF and Save the Children.

Duke Realty While individual retailers strongly support charities, so does the shopping center’s owner, Duke Realty. The company has a strong mission to help the community in many ways. Employees are given two paid days per year in which they are encouraged to do community work, Duke often matches employee support of non-profits and the company has an annual drive every year in support of the United Way. In 2010 alone, Duke employees donated approximately 6,000 volunteer hours and monetary contributions surpassing $385,000.

How to Choose Your Charities Charitable giving comes in many forms — all of them helpful and beneficial to society. The key is to give in a way that is consistent with your personal values and passions. Here is information on several popular ways to give.

MAKE A DIRECT GIFT TO CHARITY Making direct gifts to charities from your current income is a familiar route for most of us. Direct gifts provide immediate financial support for nonprofits working to meet community needs in such areas as education, health care, the arts, the environment or human services. Gifts are sometimes made “in memory” or “in honor” of an individual. To learn more about an organization before making a gift visit a charity evaluation website such as www.give.org or www.smartgivers.org.

GIVE AT WORK Federated funds, such as the Greater Twin Cities United Way, participate in annual workplace giving campaigns that raise millions of dollars for nonprofit organizations. Workplace giving campaigns allow employees to set up an automatic deduction from their payroll check to be donated to a federated fund(s), and sometimes individual charities, of their choosing. Consult your employer for details.

GIVE TO/THROUGH A FOUNDATION Community foundations are charitable organizations that administer a number of funds primarily for local purposes, to solve community or regional problems and improve the lives of people in their geographic area. Because community foundations are public charities supported by donors from across the community, all contributions to community foundations are allowed significant tax benefits.

MAKE A PLANNED GIFT TO CHARITY “Planned giving” is a term commonly used to describe giving to charity during your lifetime and/ or after your death. Planned giving is typically done in conjunction with estate planning and is a viable option for donors of all income levels. From a donor’s perspective, planned giving is attractive for many reasons. It may allow you to make larger gifts than you otherwise could out of your current assets. Depending on how a planned gift is set up, it may also let you receive a stream of income for life, earn higher investment yield, or reduce your capital gains or estate taxes. Planned gifts often appeal to people who want to benefit a charitable organization but aren’t certain how much of their assets they’ll need for themselves during their lifetimes. FASHION & ENTERTAINING Being fabulous during winter gatherings isn’t always easy, but somehow you manage to pull it off. This season, we’re offering you help in the form of tips and hints on how to be fashionable and stylish all season long. We’ve enlisted two local style experts to provide solutions to fashion and entertaining challenges.

FOR FASHION Working within a budget When you’re on a limited budget, planning and prioritization are key. Invest in key pieces that define your signature style, like a trendy accessory or top from Hot Mama, and seek out quality at the lower price point retailers for basics from Love Culture or Primp. To help you make decisions in the dressing room, ask yourself the following: • Do I have something like this already in my closet that fits and is in good shape? • Does this flow with what I have and like to wear? • How often will I wear this? • On a scale of 1-5, how much do I love how this makes me look and feel?

Getting unstuck from a funk Break out of a boring funk with inspiration from stores that ooze creativity and trend. Pink Champagne is filled with one-of-akind ways to stand out in a crowd, while Republic of Couture brings the best of the South Beach to the Midwest. Experiment with your own twist using one or all of the following ideas: • Mix tops, bottoms and accessories that have common colors and different pattern sizes. • Instead of monotone, pair different shades of the same color. • Incorporate bold metallic accessories, which are neutral and go with every color.

26

theshopsatwestend.com

• Break out of your routine and try on at least one thing that you would never normally pick. If it doesn’t work, try something else.

Running short on time

Cooking the meal

When time is scarce or seemingly nonexistent and the list of things you need continues to grow, stores like Hot Mama, Pink Champagne, Republic of Couture, and White House | Black Market, can help – from special ordering to personal shopping.

Anthropologie carries a nice selection of cookbooks filled with new meal ideas for occasions of any type. When trying a recipe for the first time, test it ahead of time so you are comfortable with the recipe.

Keep your sanity intact with the following time-saving tips: • Know what works for you. Think about the the colors, shapes and styles of the items you like wearing. Zero in on these same types of things instead of trying to look at everything. • Keep it simple. Classic, timeless and flattering are always in style, as long as your pieces do not appear aged and tired. • Ask for help. Store employees want to help you look and feel your best and can reduce your time in the dressing room by getting you different sizes. • Call for reinforcements. Independent personal shoppers can help you make sense of what you have in your closet and shop for you at your favorite stores.

FOR ENTERTAINING The holiday season doesn’t have to be stressful, even when unexpected parties and get-togethers pop up. No matter what the occasion, here are a few tips that can help keep you stress-free. Obviously, it is important to plan early for larger events, but when a spontaneous gathering happens, you can still be prepared.

Determining your budget If you are hosting a party determine your budget before you write the guest list; remember the budget should include food, beverages and additional décor. Your budget will dictate the type of party you will be able to host and how many guests will comfortably fit within your budget. If you find your budget does not allow for all the people you wish to see over the holidays to attend one lavish party, consider other options such as a breakfast, lunch or coffee and dessert.

© Chronicle Books

To make meal planning easy, follow these steps: • Photocopy the recipe and put away the cookbook so you free up more room on your counter work space. • Make a list of what items you already have and what you’ll need. If you shop at the same grocery store visualize the store and group items on your list according to department and flow in the store – this will save you time. • Watch Rainbow Foods ads for coupons and specials that will help save you money. Rainbow’s Roundy brand can be substituted for national brand items and will often be less expensive. • Guests often ask what they can bring, do not turn them down. If you want something specific keep a list of items or dishes that would be helpful to your party. • If you are not comfortable in the kitchen or your party is larger, many restaurants, such as CRAVE, offer catered dinners.

Creating a drink list Instead of offering a full bar, choose a cocktail and make it your signature drink for the season. Or, select a couple bottles of your favorite wine; don’t forget to have nonalcoholic drinks available as well. On a budget? Boxed wines were once frowned upon by wine enthusiasts, however they’ve become more popular because wineries have been able to develop a variety of great tasting wines. Not only do party hosts purchase boxed wine for the flavor, but also for the value; most boxes are 3-liters, equivalent to four bottles. For a beautiful holiday presentation you can pour your box wine into a carafe or decanter.

Creating centerpieces Create table centerpieces by using natural materials such as winter squash, fresh herbs, citrus, apples, pears, pomegranates and nuts. You can use them in recipes later. If you have young ones around, think about decorating with children’s artwork as part of the total design so they are involved in the project. Creative Kidstuff has creative supplies to get kids involved with decorating or to keep kids busy while you’re decorating.

• Use the china pieces that maybe sitting in a cabinet waiting for a special occasion – it’s finally a special occasion! • Mix and match your pieces, including glassware. Anthropologie carries a great selection of affordable mix-and-match stemware and glasses. • Go faux. This season, Pink Champagne carries a faux-wood line of dinnerware handmade in England for a Minnesotabased company. Serving dishes from this unique collection would create interesting conversation. • If you are missing something, check with family and friends. Often you can find someone with extra serving pieces, linens and even decorations.

Decluttering the kitchen Because you will spend a lot of time in the kitchen, make sure it’s organized before you start; this will help maximize your time and minimize frustration. Don’t forget to add special touches to the kitchen when decorating. Add a bowl of fresh fruits that you may incorporate in dishes or beverages later. Sprigs of pine or holly are long-lasting and look great in a porcelain pitcher or vase. Dress up your table with table linens, centerpieces and dinnerware.

Aromas for your occasion can be achieved in many ways – from candles to natural items. Orange pomanders are easy to make; the scent of orange blended with the spicy aroma of cloves is a not-to-be-missed holiday smell. Rainbow Foods has all the supplies you need for this aromatic décor. You simply need fresh, ripe oranges and a jar of whole cloves. Insert the pointy ends of the cloves into the rind of the orange in any pattern you choose. For another combination, glue cinnamon sticks around a candle holder. They will exude their aroma as the candle burns. When selecting candles choose a variety of sizes and aromas; purchase quality candles to ensure the scent will last as it burns. Sales associates at Anthropologie can help you select the perfect candles for your occassion. Purchase simple holiday greenery arrangements from a local florist and embellish them yourself for a unique touch.

Selecting music Create a festive atmosphere with music. A winter party doesn’t have to have holiday music - create a theme for your gathering and choose music to match. Keep the volume low so guests can easily converse.

Hosting a shopping party If you feel you don’t have time to entertain at home and shop for the holidays, contact the staff at Charming Charlie and host a CC Social. It is a great way to get your shopping done and get together with friends while enjoying snacks, beverages and a 20% discount on jewelry, accessories and handbags. After shopping, head to one of the restaurants at The Shops at West End for a nice group dinner.

A Perfect Proposal Two local couples share their story of becoming engaged and finding the perfect bauble at The Shops at West End. < Kristin & Tim When Kristin Wozniak got a new puppy in March with Tim Hanrahan, her boyfriend of three years, she was overjoyed. And then, the first day the couple had her, Haven walked into the living room with a princess cut ring attached to her collar. “I bounced around a lot of ideas, but involving the new dog seemed fun,” Tim says. “We’re real homebodies,” says Kristin. “It was perfect.”

The couple, who met while working together in an operating room in St. Louis Park, had looked at rings earlier in the year and loved the selection they found at Wedding Day Diamonds. “I wanted something that I’d like for a long time and I fell in love with this ring,” Kristin says. “At Wedding Day, they were so attentive and we got a diamond education.”

So when it came time for the final decision, Tim didn’t look anywhere else. “Wedding Day was willing to work with me, and they had so many rings,” he says. “I really felt taken care of there.” And now the couple looks to their wedding day, planned for Sept. 22, 2012 in Kristin’s hometown of Brooklyn Park. The dress and many final details are yet to be planned. “We’re enjoying just being engaged,” Kristin says.

A Perfect Proposal < Caitlin & Brian They met in middle school in Elk River, but Brian Persyk and Caitlin Conley didn’t start dating until they had graduated from high school and were off to college—him to the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and her to University of Wisconsin-River Falls. The couple endured the distance and after six years together, Brian decided it was time to pop the question and went to Bergstrom Jewelers to find the perfect ring for Caitlin. Brian is the second in his family to go to Bergstrom to see family friend and salesman Rod Else. His brother had done the same just two years earlier. When he headed into the store “just to look,” Rod helped him find the perfect ring for Caitlin—a 1.5 carat cushion-cut antique ring. “I knew generally what she wanted, but we

hadn’t shopped together,” Brian says. “Bergstrom was so helpful and really helped me find exactly what I was looking for.” And Caitlin couldn’t be happier. “He nailed it,” she says. So, with the custom-designed Simon G ring in hand, Brian headed off to Barcelona in June to surprise Caitlin, who was doing a Semester at Sea as part of her graduate program at St. Thomas. After a lot of coordinating and a few delayed flights, a tuxedo-clad Brian met Caitlin on the steps of a church in the Spanish town. “I was completely shocked,” she says. “He really put a lot of thought into it and it was perfect.” The happy couple is planning a fall 2012 wedding - likely not in Spain, but we can bet it will be just as memorable as the proposal.

A Guy’s Guide for a Perfect Proposal Let the jewelers help you. Brian and Tim both took advantage of the expert knowledge and attention to detail jewelers offer. Ask lots of questions, take advantage of their expertise and remember that they want to work with you and earn your business.

Custom? Give yourself lots of time. Both Wedding Day Diamonds and Bergstrom Jewelers can custom-make rings. But remember that this takes time.

Plan something memorable. Every proposal is unique, and something that works for one special someone might not work for another. Both Caitlin and Kristin agreed: the element of surprise is important! You can go to extremes, like Brian did, or stay close to home and find a unique space to make it memorable.

Caring for mind & body Winter provides amazing skiing, sledding and other outdoor fitness options. For some people, the cold temperatures and lack of sunlight may simply mean another day indoors. But for others it can have an effect on their mood and quality of life. The “winter blues” are when a person experiences increased sadness during the late fall or early winter months, with mood improving in the spring or summer. As many as 10% to 20% of Americans struggle with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), including symptoms of increased sleep and daytime drowsiness, irritability, fatigue, diminished concentration and increased appetite, especially for sweets and carbohydrates causing weight gain.

Build Your Family Naturally

Consider the following tips to stay energized and healthy during the long winter months and busy holiday season:

Trying to get pregnant? Recent medical research has shown that acupuncture can improve the outcome of IUI and IVF cycles. Whether you are trying to get pregnant on your own or if you are using Assisted Reproduction Technology (ART), acupuncture and/or Chinese herbs can help increase your chances of getting pregnant and can also help prevent miscarriage.

Light therapy: This involves daily doses of artificial light. Light therapy devices can be purchased over-the-counter, without a doctor’s prescription. Most people have a good response by sitting in front of a light box for 20 to 90 minutes a day.

Vitamin D: Studies have found that taking vitamin D, which our bodies naturally produce in the sun and which drops during the winter, may help ease the winter blues. Vitamin D can be found in products at Nutrishop at The Shops at West End. Physical Activity: Get at least 30 minutes of moderate to intense exercise per day. Alternating throughout the

week between strength training, cardiovascular exercise, and meditative movement is best. This promotes oxygen to the brain which can increase a stablized, steady mood. Community: Increase weekly structure to prevent isolation and connect with others. Consider registering for a group activity such as indoor tennis, meditation, or learning a language. Initiate inviting friends to a movie at the ShowPlace ICON Theater or treat yourself to a pedicure at Glamour Nails at The Shops at West End. Nutrition: Eat more foods that contain Omega 3 fatty acids (found in fish oil) and the amino acid Tryptophan. This is found in fish, turkey, chicken, dairy products, avocados, bananas, and wheat germ. These foods also boosts serotonin, a “feel good” chemical in the brain. Stay hydrated: Your body needs water to stay healthy. Add moisture to your body by drinking plenty of water, and to the air you breathe with a humidifier. Yoga: With it’s focus on movement paired with breathing, different styles of yoga can assist in bringing energy to those who feel lethargic, or bringing calm to those who feel stress. Consider one of the free yoga classes held Sunday mornings at lululemon athletica at The Shops at West End. As with any medical condition, if your symptoms aren’t easily alleviated with these tips, consult your physician or mental health professional. You may have a more serious form of depression that can be assisted with other treatments.
