A man was sitting alone in his office one night when a genie popped up out of his ashtray and said, "And what will your third wish be?" The man looked at the genie and said, "Huh? How can I be getting a third wish when I haven't had a first or second wish yet?" "You have had two wishes already," the genie said, "but your second wish was for me to put everything back the way it was before you made your first wish. Thus, you remember nothing, because everything is the way it was before you made any wishes. You now have one wish left." "Okay," said the man, "I don't believe this, but what the heck. I wish I were irresistible to women." "Funny," said the genie as it granted his wish and disappeared forever. "That was your first wish, too!"

by Elaine Rogers Ok so we know the date February 14th every single (no pun intended) year is called Valentine’s Day. According to our superior on-line encyclopedia (WIKI):

just maybe it’s one of those days, like any other celebratory day, to be left to those who feel like celebrating.

“The holiday is named after one or more early Christian martyrs named Valentine and was established by Pope Gelasius I in 496 AD. It is traditionally a day on which lovers express their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as "valentines"). The holiday first became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. Modern Valentine's Day symbols include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have largely given way to mass-produced greeting cards, and Valentine's Day has become the second-largest greeting card-sending holiday in the United States, behind only Christmas.” So what about those of us who are not involved romantically in the traditional sense? What do they do on Feb 14th? Words such as “cringe”, “hide”, “sabotage” and “rebel” are to be heard across the country. They rush past the shop windows full of romantic paraphernalia. They attempt to ignore the influx of flowers and over sized cards coming through reception at work. They turn off the radio in the car blaring out the classic romantics. They jeer in the petrol station at the unfortunate victims of forgetfulness who purchase the last limp flowers and sagging chocolates as they dash home to get changed for dinner. Is the only other option to rebel? Organise a “singles night”? Defiantly go out with a bunch of the guys / girls to prove it’s not all just about romance? It seems there is just no place for those not involved in romance! Well maybe there isn’t

,

Practically every day in the year is a day of celebration of some kind. But we mostly don’t know about it unless it directly affects us. For example, Mother’s Day - for mothers. Father’s Day - for fathers. Work/Life Balance Day – only for those who work AND have a life? Earth Day is not for everyone, neither is Independence Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Cancer Day etc etc. So here is a suggestion – leave the romance to the romantics involved! Do something else, or do nothing unusual. Valentine’s Day is not a compulsory celebration – if you have nothing to celebrate, then carry on. However, it is a day where we can use the opportunity to show appreciation for one we love. That includes siblings, friends, best friends, colleagues, aunts and uncles, Godparents, pets and many more. There is always someone to be grateful to for something. Valentine’s Day is about love – let us express that love and appreciation for some person, animal, or entity. Let us simply practice gratitude for the universe. Let us simply demonstrate solidarity for a recent event or crisis. Or just have a normal day, and enjoy it.

TG4 Docudrama investigates controversial incident involving Tipperary men in 1942 A docudrama series produced by Midas Productions called Ceart agus Coir is broadcasting on TG4 at the moment. The series investigates capital punishment in Ireland since the establishment of the State and re-enacts old murder cases from the first half of the 20th century. One very interesting case which features across the two final episodes of the series begins on Thursday, February 11th and continues the following Thursday, February 18th is that of Tipperary Protestant IRA man, George Plant. Plant was executed by firing squad in 1942 for the murder of fellow IRA man and alleged informer, Michael Devereux on Slievenamon Mountain two years previously. The case was one of the most controversial incidents during

the Emergency Legislation and Military Courts era of the early 1940s and is still viewed with scepticism by legal experts. Both programmes delve into the history of the IRA and the level of corruption within the organisation and the State’s response to IRA activity during the World War II era.

Tipperary’s Shane Long Shane long continues to hit the headlines with Reading . With Reading facing relegation to the obscurity of League One, this was another crucial game. Shane first put his side ahead with another deft header, before unselfishly passing to team mate Brian Howard for the second. The eventual result, 2-1, keeps Reading within one point of Roy Keane’s Ipswich Town in the dogfight for survival in the division.

Valentine’s Day

Planning a wedding is not easy! When you first begin planning a wedding, there are so many forks in the road, a multitude of decisions to make, and so many ways to go astray. At this amazing and crazy time in your life, take a minute to step back, relax and organize your thoughts. Get a grip on the project you have just undertaken, follow some seemingly simple steps, and planning a wedding can be a wonderful and memorable experience. Establish a budget, stick to it and don't deviate. This is often a neglected characteristic of planning a wedding. It is essential to get your budget in order before making any financial decisions. Too often, many couples book a reception location or a wedding day professionals without solid financials in hand, only to find out they have overspent and are now bound by a contract. Big tip: Use a number for the budget that is 10-15% less than what you actually plan on spending, so you essentially have a buffer when additional expenses arise, because they will. The great thing is that if you don't use your entire buffer, you will have some extra spending money for your honeymoon. Hire Wedding Professionals. When your best friend's second cousin volunteers to do be your wedding photographer, and promises a nice discount, it might be tempting to take advantage of the offer. However, a big word of caution - hiring friends and family can often backfire. Expectations may not be met on the wedding day and friendships can become estranged. Additionally, these friends may not have all the necessary experience or equipment to complete the task effectively. You should hire wedding professionals for their experience, expertise, and resources. True professionals will assist in making your day hassle free. You hire them, you can direct them, and the relationship is not personal. Compare apples to apples, not apples to oranges Many times, when a bride begins a search for a reception location or for wedding vendors, she simply compares prices, not services or characteristics of the services. It is rare that you will find two locations offering the exact same package, or two videographers that offer the same quality of service (time and style) and amount of product (prints and albums). You need to carefully evaluate each aspect

of the potential venue or vendor. What seems too expensive at first glance may actually be a better deal when you realize what it offers compares to others in the same category. Be different - cookie cutter weddings are out of style. Brides and groom continue to look for new ways to add personal flavor to their wedding day. Giving your wedding personal style does not mean doing the same thing your best friend did, or what you watched on Entertainment Tonight about Nicole Kidman's wedding. Think out of the box. Hiring a wedding planner or event designer, even for a few hours, can help you be inspired and lead to amazing results. Instead of a guest book, have guests sign a coffee table book on a subject that is of interest to you. Learn an unexpected choreographed first dance, like the tango, and wow the crowd. Surround yourself with the positive people. When selecting a wedding party and asking other friends to be involved in the wedding, select people who have positive attitudes and those who, as Bill O'Reilly says are, 'lookout for you'. Single girlfriends, your older single sister, even your brother may feel a tad envious of your engagement. For the most part, this is a passing phase, but that does not make it any easier for you to deal with. These people may often criticize your decisions, attempt to have attention diverted away from you with their own theatrics, or simply try to make themselves the focus of many decisions (the style of the bridesmaids dresses, what foods they like or dislike for the meal, or which date for the wedding is better for her schedule). If and when this situation arises, try your best to walk away from it and ignore it. Realize their behavior is not your fault, and if they must be included in the celebrations, have your mother or a trusted friend intercept the stressful dealings with these people. Make your ceremony mean something. The best way to do this is to write your own vows and/or select special poems, readings or Biblical verses. Even though the ceremony is really the only event that needs to take place on the wedding day, so many couples put little focus on the actual planning of the service itself. Is there a special song for you and your fiance, perhaps the one that was playing the night you

Wedding Day

Wedding Day

Valentine’s Day

Wedding Planning Tips, (continued) or he proposed? Why not walk the aisle to it and surprise your fiance? Have you ever written a poem or love letter to your fiance? Read it during the ceremony, or if nerves won't allow you to read it yourself, have the Officiant read it for you. Look into your fiances eyes during the ceremony and focus on the two of you and the life you are preparing together. Create a timeline for the wedding day. If you are not working with a wedding planner, it is your job to create a realistic timeline for everyone to follow. Detail and document all key elements and activities that are to take place on the day. Include addresses of locations and who needs to be where and when. If you do not do this, you take the risk of all the wedding vendors establishing their own agendas. Of course, consult with the ceremony and reception venue, as well as key vendors regarding the timeline, but ultimately most all of the timeline decisions are up to you. Ask for help when you need it.

It is not uncommon for a bride or groom to become overwhelmed with wedding planning. It takes a lot of time, dedication and work. Typically there are many people knocking at your door anxious to help your future mother in law, your mother, your sister, his sister, your best friend, your single best friend the list can go on forever. When asking for help from friends or family members, give them specific instructions and deadlines. Also, make sure they know you still have final say. When wedding planning consumes every aspect of your life, take a breather. Schedule a date with your fiance and go to dinner, take a walk, or just go for ice cream. There is only one rule no wedding talk. Reconnect with the ones you love and then get back to the planning with your mind and heart focused on the right things. Of course these are not the only steps to planning a wedding, but these are very important aspects of planning that will help you keep your sanity and your focus on the reason for this whole crazy thing, love.

"Here comes the Bride" "Here comes the Bride" is a stirring and rousing song that is played as the bride makes her way up the aisle on her wedding day. The music originally came from the opera Lohengrin which was composed by Richard Wagner. The first performance was in 1850 and the music is played as the hero of the opera, Lohengrin, enters the bridal chamber with his new wife Elsa.

Eight years later, the Bridal Chorus was used at the occasion of the marriage of the Princess Victoria who was Quenn Victoria's daughter. She married the German Crown Prince, Friedrich Wilhelm of Prussia. The playing of the Bridal Chorus at the royal wedding made it a very popular choice as the matrimonial music and to this day, remains one of the most popular pieces to be played when a bride approaches the alter.

Allianz Football League Rounds 1 Well done to defending champions Thurles CBS on their 1-10 to 1-5 victory and 2 Tipperary’s Senior Footballers had a frustrating start to their Division 2 Allianz Football League campaign on Saturday evening when they lost by just 2 points to Laois at Portlaoise having been down 10 points at half time and managing to draw level with 8 minutes left. However Laois recovered to score 2 points and snatch victory with Tipp unfortunate not to score a goal with the last kick of the game. Tipp will play Kildare in Semple Stadium at 7.30pm on Saturday, February 13th which is the first anniversary weekend of the switching on of Semple Stadium’s floodlights. Kildare lost to Down last weekend so both teams will both want and need to win this game.

Senior Hurling Challenge Game Versus Dublin Tipperary will play Dublin in a Senior Hurling challenge game at St. Brigid’s GAA Club (Russell Park), Castleknock at 7.30pm on Saturday evening next, February 13th. The game marks the opening of the all weather pitch, hurling wall and 6 new dressing rooms at St. Brigids. It will be preceded at 5.30pm with a Camogie game between Dublin and Kilkenny. The new facilities will be opened at 4.30pm by Criostoir Ó Cuana, Uachtarán, Cumann Luthchleas Gael and blessed by Fr. Walter Harris, retired PP of Blanchardstown, a native of Ballylooby and a great Tipperary hurling fan of many decades standing. St. Brigid’s has often played host to Tipperary teams on their way to Croke Park and it is great to have Tipperary playing on the occasion of these excellent facilities being opened. Among the Tipperary stalwarts in the club are Don O’Mahony from Annacarty, a founding and still serving committee member of the Tipperary Supporters Club and Jerry Nolan of Boherlahan-Dualla, who for many years “minded” the door of Tipperary dressing rooms. We hope Tipperary supporters in the capital will be able to make their way to Russell Park for what promises to be a great occasion.

John Costigan Running for Vice Chair of Munster Council Tipperary County Board has nominated John Costigan to run for Vice Chairman of Munster Council at its annual convention on March 5th. Motoring

New cars registered in January 2010 The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) has released the official figures for new cars registered in January 2010 which at 16,595 are up 5.04% on January 2009 (15,799). Commenting on the figures, SIMI Director General Alan Nolan said, “At 5% up on January last year, we are very pleased with new car sales so far this year. This is the second month in a row that we have seen an increase in registrations. Given that the first two weeks of January suffered a virtual standstill in trading due to the bad weather, the fact that the month has finished 5% ahead of last year is a very strong sign that consumers are availing of the incredible value that is available at the moment. While the snow and ice delayed registrations until well into the month, feedback from dealers around the country is indicating that the significant increase in footfall and in actual sales, in comparison to this time last year, is continuing. Dealers are also reporting that the Scrappage Scheme has been very well received by the public who are

actively seeking out the best value in 2010 low emission cars.” SIMI Press Officer Suzanne Sheridan added, “We expect the current trend to continue for the year to achieve the 70,000 plus new car sales that we predicted.” Light Commercial Vehicle registrations for January 2010 (2,060) are also up 27.7% on the same period last year (1,613) while Heavy Vehicle registrations are down -52.01% (131) compared to January 2009 (273). Imported Used Car registrations for January, at 3,188, were down 45.87% on the January 2009 (5,889), while registrations of imported used Light Commercial vehicles at 590 are also down -50.8% on January 2009 (1,201). Details of sales of New Cars, Light Commercial Vehicles, Heavy Commercial Vehicles and Buses are attached.

Tipperary North County Enterprise Board delivers a number of programmes annually, all designed to heighten business awareness and to foster an enterprise culture in the County. The Board support schools in the delivery of a number of action based enterprise programmes intended to introduce students to the concept of entrepreneurship at an early age. Initiatives such as Enterprise Encounter, Enterprise Days and Student Enterprise Awards help to familiarise students with business operations and terminology generating an appreciation of the benefits that business brings to the local community in terms of jobs and other spin offs. In pursuit of their objective to further link enterprise with education and to cultivate an even stronger enterprise culture, the Board designed this competition for North Tipperary’s primary school students back in 2006. Students are required to identify and interview a local entrepreneur/ successful business person. Based on this interview, students produce a report documenting the story of the entrepreneur and detailing their experience in starting their own business. Students are free to provide

supporting material such as voice recordings, dvds, powerpoint presentations or whatever they like to supplement their report. Entries have to be original with the Entrepreneur coming from the local area. County & City Enterprise Boards are funded by the Irish Government and part funded by the European Union under the National Development Plan, 2007 - 2013.

OpenStreetMap Worldwide Project to Map The World

ARRA Communications

Communications

Providing cost effective Broadband and IT Solutions

by Ken Guest What is it? OpenStreetMap (http://www.openstreetmap.org) is a world wide project with an aim of mapping the world and keeping that map up-to-date and complete. The maps created by the project can be used for any purpose without payment of any kind. Uses These maps can be included on websites (as either static images or ones you can drag around), printed for leaflets, downloaded to iphone and other devices including ordinary mobile phones and Garmin Sat Nav units - all free of charge. The data from which the maps are compiled can also be used for navigation and routing software, compiling local directories of businesses and so on. Maps can be rendered in custom styles - and in different languages. For example you could have a map of Nenagh with all street names as Gaeilge. Cycle maps. Open Piste Map. Orienteering Maps. They're all possible with OpenStreetMap data. One advantage that you have using OpenStreetMap is the quick turnaround between uploading new sections or corrections of the map of your own locality and those changes being ready for others to use them. It can take less than an hour for changes to become evident. With some mapping companies it can take up to 18 months!

on some map because they're not the best at giving directions; or want to assist in "Crisis Mapping"; or might want to map things of specific interest to them, such as pre-Christian burial mounds for example; or they might just find blank spaces on a map where they know there are roads, woods, churches, newsagents, whatever and want to get them on the map. Others do it because they have the technology (a gps device and a computer) and, well, why not? How? The map of Ireland is blank in places so it's quite a bit of fun and very easy to help make it more complete. Adding new points of interest (POI) to OpenStreetMap is relatively simple - and all the more so if you have something like an iPhone. There are silimar apps that you can put on other phones if you don't have an iPhone; a list is at http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/S oftware/Mobile_phones At the walking-papers.org website you can print maps of your area; draw corrections on the map and then upload your update for someone else to do the work of inserting your fix into the live system. If you go to the www.openstreetmap.ie website you can zoom in to where you want to add some detail, click edit (much like on wikipedia), add the info and click save.

'Crisis Mapping' An extreme example of how OpenStreetMap can be used is the "Crisis Mapping" of Haiti - very complete maps of Port-au-Prince where camps were springing up were created using donated [satellite] imagery that was updated on a near daily basis and transferred onto rescue teams' Garmin devices allowing them to very quickly converge where their assistance is vital. Why? People contribute their time to OpenStreetMap for all sorts of reasons: they may want to ensure the new housing estate that they're living in is

If this all seems too technical try the openstreetbug site where you can easily zoom in and add a note for some one else to work on. Who else is doing this? A small community of mappers has sprung up in Ireland; have at look at http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Ir eland for contact details (at the bottom) and to see our project page. If you've any questions, or need some help you should be able to find us through the details there. By Ken Guest http://blogs.linux.ie/kenguest/

Rockabilly/swing guitarist Brian Setzer voted the world’s greatest living guitarist in online poll. Brian Seltzer has topped an online poll of the world’s greatest living guitarists. The former ‘Stray Cats’ member beet 97 other guitarists into first place in the poll carried out by guitar website dbTwang.com. Three time Grammy award winner, Brian Setzer first came to prominence as the guitarist with 80’s Rockabillies The Stray Cats who split in 1984 after a string of UK and US hits. Brian then went on to record several solo projects. In 1987, he played the part of Eddie Cochran in the Ritchie Valens biopic, La Bamba. The 50 year old from New York State also played lead guitar as part of Robert Plant’s 80’s ensemble band. Since then, Brian, a 7 time Grammy nominee, has split his time between further solo projects and ‘The Brian Setzer Orchestra’; a 17 piece swing and jump blues band. Announcing Setzer as the winner of dbTwang.com’s inaugural monthly poll, co-founder Fintan Blake Kelly said “Setzer’s rise to the top was fascinating to watch. Almost 1,200 votes were cast in total over the 3 weeks of this poll, distributed amongst 97 living guitarists from the well-known likes of Clapton to Jimmy Page to the less well known yet still critically acclaimed

such as Tommy Emanuel and Joe Bonamassa. Each voter was restricted to naming their top 3 guitarists. “The poll is really the end result of several, sometimes heated debates at dbtwang.com”, added Fintan. “By being asked to choose just 3 guitarists out of a list of such exemplary musicians, voters were compelled to really consider which of these great guitarists have lengthened the vanishing point of possibilities for the guitar, either through innovative technique or sound. This leaves us with a definitive list - as I believe that within that subjective context, voting in a poll is not totally dissimilar to purchasing a download and having it logged in a Billboard chart.” “There were also some unexpected inclusions and omissions from the shortlist, said Fintan, “and we were certainly surprised at how the vote panned out, but then, that’s the beauty of having a community led poll of people who are really passionate about guitars. This poll is a great start to our ‘monthly poll initiative’ - next we’ll be asking for the the People’s Favorite Metal Guitarists”. For more detailed information on the poll go to http://www.dbtwangpolls.com

Celtic Tour 2010 Billy and Katriona Shanahan and their intrepid team of “Blazing Bikers” Motorbike Charity Run enthusiasts are taking on a new, novel and innovative May Bank Holiday 2010 Charity Road Run. The eagerly awaited announcement sees a team of men, women, bikers and pillions including a few visually impaired head across the channel to Wales for the aptly named “Celtic Tour”. The three stages listed below will see the charity bikers ride a total of 560 undulating miles in Wales. There will be a tour of the Isle of Anglesey and a brief cross over the English border at Hay- On-Wye!

The Highlight of the Celtic Tour will be the Memorial Charity Road Run on Saturday in memory of a Welsh folk hero, former Wales and British Lions Rugby star Ray Gravell. Ray had very close links to the charity benefiting from this event - the National Council for the Blind of Ireland for many years. We hope local charity bikers from all over Wales will join this rally and raise funds for local Welsh Charities on the day. The stages will take the tour down the Welsh west coast via the Isle of Anglesey and the beautiful quaint village of Betwys Y Coed on day one, a scenic ride down to Stradey Park Hotel in Llanelli. Day two, the big event will take the team

east from our official start line at Ray Gavel’s statue in Parc Y Scarlets. Then heading via Brecon north on the Welsh/English border with a slight incursion onto English soil close to Hay-On-Wye! We will then continue on north to a well deserved lunch and rest point in Welshpool, before returning south through the central and wonderful heartland of Wales including stops in Rhayader and Buith Wells! We will finish again at the Stradey Park Hotel our general HQ for the Celtic Tour. The route for day 3 will be “West is Best” this will take the bikers along the south coast of Wales via Carmathen, west to our finish line at the Irish Ferries terminal at Pembroke. Our total is 560 miles!!

A total of 125 bikers will travel accompanied by a support crew from all over Ireland. A fundraising target of €500 per biker pps and €300 per pillion pps is required which can be raised through sponsorship. Book early to secure your place by deposit as interest is already surpassing previous Blazing Bikers Charity Tours. For further details, fundraising pack or to book your place, contact: Billy Shanahan 087-9253225 Katriona Shanahan 087-4106861 or email: billy05@eircom.net or blazingbikers@gmail.com or visit www.bikerschallenge.com NCBI Charity no. Thurles Education Centre, new name, new address In December we moved from the Muintir na Tire Hall in Littleton to our new premises in Kickham Street, Thurles. The building is located across from the Pallottine Fathers. We have changed our name from; The North Tipperary Senior Traveller Training Centre to; Thurles Education Centre. We can be contacted at (0504) 90476 or thurlesbasicedcentre@eircom.net. Our central location offers our students the experience of a wide range

of facilities including The Source Arts Centre and Library which we visited before Christmas. We would like to extend a warm thank you to the library staff for visiting our centre to speak about the importance of reading with children and, later in the day,for their very informative tour of the library. A big thank you is also extended to Liz Flannery (North Tipp VEC) for facilitating this exchange as it has already generated from our students, an interest in using the library.

Cloughjordan Drama Group Celebrate their 44th Anniversary With Noel Coward’s: Blithe Spirit Cloughjordan Drama is alive and well and this year's production will not disappoint. Blithe Spirit is one of those lovely funny plays that never fail to entertain. The play is set in England in the happier days of the 1930's. The strong character of Madame Arcati is brilliantly played by Mary Carroll who is invited to an evening dinner party at the home of the Condomine's where the play is set. Madame Arcati is the local physic who is unaware of the reason for the invitation.

The Condomine's played by Laura Williams (Ruth) and Nigel Quinlan (Charles) give an outstanding portrayal of this sometime strained relationship. Ruth is Charles's second wife. In the past few years, Charles lost his first wife, the tall and sexy, Elvira, aptly played by Fiona Heffernan. The play weaves a web which includes the crossover of life past and present, good and bad for the Condomine family, living and "Passed Over". The Condomine's invite the local doctor, Mr. Bradman played by Bawney Hayes and his wife Violet played by Roisin Cahill, to the dinner party. The group are hoping for

a fun evening with the dotty old medium. Much to the surprise of the dinner party group Madame Arcati pulls off another "smash hit". The play is full of humour and surprise and the role of the maid, Edith, played by June Murphy adds great energy and speed. A servant with more talents than serving dinner, Edith plays a central role when the plot starts to thicken. The period costumes of the female cast give the production a real sense of fulfilment by the drawing together of the period home and the accents of those in the higher echelons of society. The play is capitalised upon by the clever and subtle use of lights and sound. The group have an unbroken annual run of productions since 1966, in the past two years the group have spread their talent to a summer production to partake in the local Arts Festival. A Show to raise your spirits, Blithe Spirit runs at the Parochial Hall, Cloughjordan from : Feb: Friday 19th 20th 21st, Wed 24th, Friday 26th 27th and 28th . The show opens at 8.00pm Sharp Booking is in essential. Tickets can be booked at 087-1482628.

We’re big fans of James Lee Burke here at Sheelagh na Gig bookshop. His sprawling, epic crime novels never fail to satisfy, illuminating America’s dark underbelly and the people who live there with a poet’s unflinching eye. His new novel harks back to Burke’s early works, giving us a hero in the form of one Sherriff Hackberry Holland from his 1971 book Lay Down My Sword And Shield. Set in a Texas that is as hot, dry and dusty as our recent winter, er, wasn’t, Rain Gods opens with Hackberry’s discovery of the bodies of nine dead Thai prostitutes in a shallow mass grave. The complex story that follows is one of bad men doing evil things and good men searching for redemption or groping their way through the moral vacuity of modern America. A hitman and his cronies clean up the mess, a witness hunts desperately for safety for himself and his girlfriend, a brothel owner tries to absolve himself of the terrible crime he helped unleash, low level gangsters ruthlessly pursue money and power and Hackberry Holland doggedly follows the trail of broken bodies and

broken lives to its end. Burke is going from strength to strength lately, each book better than the last. The psychology of his characters is every bit as strange and haunting as the desert landscape their physical and spiritual struggles traverse, while the tension mounts and the stakes get higher. In particular, a showdown at a diner roughly halfway through the book is a masterclass in suspense writing. Burke’s novels draw you in and wrap themselves round you and leave you wanting more, so do yourself a favour and give Rain Gods a go. Rain Gods is available in paperback from Sheelagh na Gig bookshop. Sheelagh na Gig bookshop, Cloughjordan, is open 6 days a week: Tue-Wed10.00am-5pm, Thu-Sat 10am-6pm, and Sunday 1pm-6pm. 10 Commandments of Marriage Commandment 1.

Commandment 6.

Marriages are made in heaven. But so again, are thunder and lightning.

Marriage is when a man and woman become as one; the trouble starts when they try to decide which one.

Commandment 2. Commandment 7. If you want your spouse to listen and pay strict attention to every word you say, talk in your sleep. Commandment 3. Marriage is grand -- and divorce is at least 100 grand! Commandment 4. Married life is very frustrating. In the first year of marriage, the man speaks and the woman listens. In the second year, the woman speaks and the man listens. In the third year, they both speak and the neighbors listen. Commandment 5.

Before marriage, a man will lie awake all night thinking about something you said. After marriage, he will fall asleep before you finish talking. Commandment 8. Every man wants a wife who is beautiful, understanding, economical, and a good cook. But the law allows only one wife. Commandment 9. Every woman wants a man who is handsome, understanding, economical and a considerate lover, but again, the law allows only one husband.

When a man opens the door of his car for his wife, you can be sure of one Commandment 10. thing: Either the car is new or the wife is. Man is incomplete until he marries. After that, he is finished.

Áine Mc Carthy, Environmental Awareness Officer with North Tipperary County Council gives an outline of new national initiative that is being supported by the Department of Environment Heritage and Local Government called 10:10. According to Ms Mc Carthy “10:10 is an ambitious project to unite every sector of Irish society behind one simple idea: that by working together we can achieve a 10% cut in Ireland's carbon emissions in 2010”. 10:10 is a campaign for people who feel powerless in the face of a huge problem like climate change but want to do something. The plan is simple: we work together to cut our carbon emissions by 10% in 2010. By uniting everyone around immediate, effective and achievable action we can make a meaningful difference. Each month in 2010 the 10:10 team will have a theme to promote the campaign and January was ‘Own Your Emissions’. Before you can cut your emissions you have to know what they are – and not blame them on anyone else. Here are three examples. Power Plants The iconic image of smokestacks from a massive power plant belting out clouds of pollutants suggests that this is the polluter. But in fact the emissions from a power plant are due to the use of power by people and businesses. The power plant will cut emissions when we cut power usage. Turn off the lights when not in use; cut the wattage on the security

Prayers Prayer to St.Anthony O Holy St Anthony, gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for His creatures made you worthy when on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble & anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore you to obtain for me....(here mention your request). The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so, you are the Saint of Miracles, O gentle and loving St. Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, whisper my petition

lights and put them on sensors; unplug the mobile phone charger; don’t use standby on electronic devices when not in use. Air Flights Airports are the subject of much environmental criticism – new airports and airport extensions. But in fact the emissions are caused by individuals flying. One transatlantic return flight causes as much carbon pollution as a year of driving by the average motorist in Ireland. Use electronic communications instead of flying. Make a flying ‘budget’ for the year based on last year’s trips. Supermarket Biscuits Globalisation of food with the massive lorries and distribution centres are often seen as symbols of global warming. But do the emissions caused by shipping in a package of biscuits – and all their constituents – belong to the Supermarkets?? They belong to the consumer. You can change your purchasing habits, however, to avoid foods flown around the world. Buy local and seasonal wherever possible. The message of 10:10 is that YOU can make a difference. Ms Mc Carthy advises anyone interested in the campaign to visit the website for checklists and a carbon calculator to help you figure out what your emissions are. Visitors to the website can sign up to become part of the 10:10 campaign. Locally, Nenagh Carbon Watchers are one of the first groups to sign up to the 10:10 Campaign.

Abuse

by Jim O Shea

(Continued from previous issue)

If we consider the impact of a combination of the various types of abuse on children, we have to be alarmed.

They The unfortunate thing is that we all learned it in those days. I was slapped at school, and when I became a teacher slapped my pupils. There was no excuse for this and I greatly regret ever hitting a student, or any of my own children. By doing this I taught them that physical abuse was ok. Both teachers and parents trampled on the boundaries of young people. Young people can be exasperating in school, but beating them is not the answer.
