SQUASH: A GREAT FALL VEGETABLE by: KIRA NORTON

T

here are many types of winter squash. The most recognized of these are pumpkin, acorn, butternut, and spaghetti. Winter squash provides a great source of carotenes. The rule is: the richer the color, the better the concentration. Winter squash is a great source of vitamins B1, B6 and C, fiber, niacin, folic acid, pantothenic acid, and potassium. Studies have shown that with its carotene properties, winter squash can protect against many cancers, particularly lung cancer. Also, diets that have a lot of carotenes offer protection against heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Since summer, squashes have higher water content than winter squash, they are not as nutrient dense. Here is a great recipe to make with winter squash!

TAKE IT TO THE KITCHEN Baked Maple and Brown Sugar Butternut Squash First you’ll need: 1 medium butternut squash, about 2 1/2 pounds 1/4 cup maple syrup 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed 3 tablespoons butter 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract A dash of salt and nutmeg To prepare: You’ll need to heat your oven to 350°. Lightly grease a large baking pan or spray one with non  stick cooking spray. Peel the squash with a vegetable peeler, scoop out the seeds, and cut the squash into small, 1  inch cubes. Put them in a bowl. Heat the maple syrup, brown sugar, butter, cinnamon, vanilla, salt, and nutmeg in a small pan until it is hot and the butter is melted. Drizzle that over the squash cubes and stir gently to coat. Pour into the prepared baking dish; cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil, stir gently, and bake uncovered for about 15 minutes longer, or until squash is tender. This dish serves 4 to 6 people easily and, the plus, the picky eaters will love it! A Fashion’s Night Out For An Editor by: GEORGEZ DABIT Recently Colorado has started to bloom with fashion! Seeing that Colorado isn’t yet recognized for its fashion; its exciting city life and events are helping push Colorado on the fashion spectrum. One event in particular is Fashion’s Night Out. For the United States, Fashion’s Night Out has now become a nationwide event that has opened many doors to many new and exciting trends. The exciting part is that Colorado has now become a part of this nationwide phenomenon. Colorado has hosted a few Fashion’s Night Out Events, but I went to the Orchard Town Center to cover this year’s first annual event. The event took place September 8, 2011 and each city did something different. I met up with one of my photographers, Sean Guerrero, and he shot some pretty amazing pictures of me on the red carpet. I was extremely shocked that there weren’t many people there. What surprised me the most was that Orchard advertised the event for almost two months and I only saw about 40 people at this occasion. Many stores in The Orchard Town Center sponsored Fashion’s Night Out, which is very important for the fashion community, especially in Colorado. The more involvement, the better represented the event will be. Macy’s, Melt, Organics, Pigtails and Crewcuts, Marco’s Pizza, and many more held booths promoting their products. My experience with Fashion’s Night Out was inspiring. Not only is Colorado seeing more fashion, but doors are opening for fashionistas everywhere! I love when the Denver community comes together to help one another out; it shows real companionship. I can’t wait for next year, and hopefully the crowd will be plentiful.

Deadly Sins   ’ next year s halloween costume ideas

Think dirty, hippy, wild, without the substance abuse.

by: KIRA NORTON

Pride: Everyone has pride for their country, but you can go all out with this great costume. Think Pageant Queen taken to a whole new level. Don’t be afraid to go over  the  top with a huge tiara, lots of jewels, a sash, and of course, an elegant evening dress. The more the merrier. If you don’t want to go with the stars and stripes theme, switch to a dark colored gown and stack on the jewelry.

Envy: You are desired by all. The key to making this outfit work is knowing that you are the sex appeal everyone is searching for! Greens and teals are ideal, whether you’re wearing a sexy dress, or experimenting with fabric wrapped around your whole body.

If it’s sultry and sexy, it’s perfect. Red is the color of romance; the more red the better.

Gluttony: This is probably the easiest for most to accomplish. Throw on a night gown, or pajamas with food stains, but make it sexy by wearing a tight, short, night gown with heels. Maybe even a bitten apple in hand can turn gluttony from not to hot!

Lust: Picture the original Poison Ivy from Batman; this is the look. If it’s sultry and sexy, it’s perfect. Red is the color of romance; the more red the better. Add red lace and glitter for a classier, but sexier feel.

Wrath: When you’re feeling angry, pinks and purples don’t feel right to wear. Go with blacks and dark reds. You have free range with this outfit, but make sure it’s not too sweet. Goth with a feminine touch can work perfectly. Dark makeup and dark red lips will pull this together in the most sinister way possible!

Greed: Leopard print! Leopard print! Leopard print! Can’t stress enough about the leopard print. Anything with this print will work great. Throw on some black heels, big jewels, and have money close at hand.

Sloth: You’re avoiding work at all costs. Wearing torn clothes or dirty clothes with wretched hair and smeared makeup will work wonders! Think dirty, hippy, wild, without the substance abuse.

Colorado Fashion Week Thursday 9/29/11 by: KIMBERLY CLERKLEY

T

he Temple Buell Theatre was an enchanting venue, as the models walked the elegant royal plum staircase. Adorned with gold rails, the stairs instantly descended onto the runway creating a glamorous and bold entrance for the collections of the designers. The first designer showcased was Johanna Christine, whose collection was feminine, playful, and elegant. The opening ensemble was an ivory jersey knit halter mini  dress with a flowing ruffle that set the tone for the show: stylish, iconic garments that were bold, well  tailored form fitting and versatile. Johanna Christine had several memorable garments, most noted was the third look, an ivory lace three quarter length long sleeve blouse paired with tan high wasted bell bottom pants. Also noted, was a gorgeous strapless sweet heart cobalt blue satin dress that stole the show. Show–stopping pieces are as follows: a black and gold sequin full length one sided shoulder dress, and counterpart all black one sided sleeveless shoulder paint jumper with black patent belt. Johanna Christine‘s overall collection incorporated everyday, evening, and special occasion, that is in touch with the current fashion cycle trend, the re emergence of 1970 iconic looks with a modern day twist. The Second Collection of the night was Pure by Petra Dannemann, a German designer whose collection is completely organically made. The opening look for Dannemann was a yellow fleece dress suit with cutting edge military details, seen in the zipper and shoulder buckles. The second look that followed was a bright neon blue cape with matching pencil skirt and hat, tall black boots accented the long sleeve black ruffled blouse worn underneath the cape. Petra Dannemann’s collection took a different approach toward the silhouette. Whereas many other designers have form fitting and body conscious silhouettes, Pure played with tailored yet exaggerated features seen in the sleeves of blouses, suits, and skirts. The fabric is looser to convey movement, while personifying a feel of comfy cozy chic. A stand out piece in Pure’s collection was a grey mohair dress with tassels adorning the lapels and hem of dress accented by black belt, capes, and bright neon hats.

The Editor-InChief’s Take by: GEORGEZ DABIT Can I even begin to explain how amazing Colorado Fashion Week was? The show was absolutely spectacular. Here are my highlights from both days!

SEPTEMBER 29, 2011: DAY 1 Johanna Christine

The first designer, Johanna Christine, had a great collection of cocktail dresses. From pinks to blacks, to lace, the collection was chic and great for a night out.

Dannemann

Designer Petra Dannemann, of Pure from Dannemann, had two collections. I really liked the elegant dress collection, but I was very interested in the winter wear collection as well. It was so out  there and interesting to look at. The colors were so vibrant and intense that the pinks, lime greens, and sun yellows mixed together creating a magnificent ensemble that was very New York  style. Eva Hogan, U.S. Manger was so welcoming and charming, and I really enjoyed the collection.

SEPTEMBER 30, 2011: DAY 2 Gino Velardi

Gino Velardi was not only my favorite designer at Colorado Fashion Week, but his collection of 86 pieces was complete genius. I fell in love with the diversity in Velardi’s collection, because his passion for elegance and style was most opportune. Just like sin, the red and white dresses dominated the collection, and the animal prints and furs added absolute divinity. After watching the inspiring collection of 86, I met with Velardi and I came to find out that his presence was just as fascinating as his collection.

Final Words:

I was so honored to have been a part of such an amazing and fulfilling event such as Colorado Fashion Week. Justice Kwarteng, founder and director of CFW really understands that Colorado is growing and, like DenVhere, he wants to make Colorado the next fashion capital of the United States. I want to personally thank Justice Kwarteng and Crystal Gardner for creating an event that will allow Colorado to grow for years to come, and I can’t wait for next season!

DESIGNER: GINO VELARDI

by: KIMBERLY CLERKLEY

F

riday ushered in an electrifying energy. The crowd was a various range of all fashion styles: rocker chic, social lite, indie, street, girly, glam, and the bold and adventurous; everyone was dressed to the nines, polished, and fierce. The headlining designer was Colorado’s own Gino Velardi, who gained national attention for competing on Project Runway showcasing his brilliant, amazing, original designs. The show opened with elaborate Egyptian music and five models wearing beautiful red silk chiffon dresses standing in formation on the plum staircase. The gorgeous gowns varied in silhouette which were as follows: sweet heart strapless gowns with rose fabric embellishments, red belle dresses, halters, hour glass, and princess silhouettes with long trains that poetically cascaded down the runway. Each design was a pure delight as the heart stopping details of design encompassed fearless sex appeal that was created with the use of low cut openings in the back, and unique slender straps that criss  crossed exposing the nape of the back.

COLORADO’S OWN GINO VELARDI, WHO GAINED NATIONAL ATTENTION FOR COMPETING ON PROJECT RUNWAY SHOWCASING HIS BRILLIANT, AMAZING, ORIGINAL DESIGNS

Gino Velardi was one of the few designers to incorporate male designs within his women’s collection. The male models wore exquisite well  tailored corduroy suits in brown and black with attention  grabbing scarves that just added to the color pallet of the phenomenal collection. Colors used were: red, white, black, nude, metallic, hound’s  tooth, grey, brown, plum lavender, and various silk and woven prints. There were so many remarkable looks. The most noted is as follows: the faux chinchilla coat, multiple tiered ivory ruffled V  neck dress, pure black belle dress with immaculate beading and Toole that tiered at the bottom, outerwear capes and boleros. The details were astonishing! Dresses had built in handkerchief scarfs and corsages, bold textures, and use of flowing sensual fabrics and silhouettes from all eras. Gino Velardi is high  end couture that is daring, sexy, energetic, captivating fashion that is in a league of its own.   Andrea Li collaborated with Gino Velardi her alluring elegant daring and jaw dropping jewelry perfectly added to the presentation. Andrea Li’s collection consisted of bold, large bracelets, and necklaces with signature elaborate, and regal detailing that blended magnificently into Gino Velardi’s designs essentially the icing on the cake. The colors of the jewelry pieces were in unison and conveyed bold, feminine, sexy, and confident styles. Overall, this collaboration was a match made in heaven and an honor to witness Colorado’s finest fashion and jewelry designers at their very best.
