THIS IS DEFIANCE

DC BASEBALL 2012 THIS IS DEFIANCE COLLEGE

Defiance College, founded in 1850, is a private liberal arts college affiliated with the United Church of Christ, providing outstanding academic programs and co-curricular activities for a student body of nearly 1,100 students. Building on a strong foundation of more than a century of educating citizens for lives of leadership and service, Defiance College provides opportunities for its students to make a meaningful impact on society in the twenty-first century with an educational experience of engagement. The Princeton Review features Defiance College in Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement. Defiance College has been named for five-consecutive years to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to community service, and for the past two years DC has been named a Military Friendly School for providing significant benefits and services to veterans. Defiance College is also one of 119 U.S. colleges and universities selected by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching to receive its Community Engagement Classification. The McMaster School for Advancing Humanity was created to provide opportunities for DC undergraduate students and faculty to more closely examine global issues and how they affect the human condition. Faculty and students conducted projects during the 2010-2011 year in Belize, Cambodia and New Orleans. The School serves as the umbrella for the Service Leadership Program developing leadership communication, conflict resolution and cultural awareness, with the Carolyn M. Small Honors Program providing opportunities for students to participate in an honors curriculum and Project 701, a student-run nonprofit organization. Defiance College offers students a world of opportunities to enhance their academic experience, from cultural visits in world-class cities across the continent, to international trips through the DC Global program, all of which open minds to new ideas and cultures and provide insights to help in competition for jobs and graduate school placement. Defiance College is also home of the Hench Autism Studies Program, an innovative, multi-faceted program designed to specifically address the late adolescent years and the transition of individuals with autism to adulthood. Student life is an important part of a Defiance College education. Activities include student government, musical and theater groups, religious organizations, intercultural organizations, honor societies, special interest groups, intramural athletics, and four Greek chapters including a service fraternity. As a national leader in the field of service learning and engagement, DC teaches students to take the knowledge they have gained and use it to change lives for the better in their communities, in distant villages, and in their careers. Approximately 10,000 men and women across the globe claim Defiance College as their alma mater, and they excel in all walks of life.

WELCOME TO DEFIANCE

Dear Fellow Defiance College Fan,

The entire Defiance College family joins me in welcoming you to our campus and to today’s game. We hope that while you are with us today, you will have the opportunity to explore as many parts of Defiance College as possible and that you will share in the excitement about DC continuing to grow around the nation. This year’s entering freshman class is the largest in recent memory. During the past year, we have seen significant increases in applications, with particular increases in applications from outside Ohio, as we become more and more a college with national reach and scope. In fact, this past year, more than half of the students applying to DC came from outside Ohio, representing 48 states and territories. Why are students traveling from all around the United States (and other countries as well) to attend DC? I think it is because Defiance College offers students the best of all worlds. At DC, students get the individualized benefits of a student-centered, small college, but they also get a world of opportunities beyond. Let me explain. As a small college, DC works to help students grow as people, providing individualized attention in the classroom, the guidance of Personal Success Plans, mentoring, and assistance geared to the challenges and potential of each student. DC provides this in a rural, caring, and supportive setting, thereby enabling students to challenge themselves in new ways and grow as individuals, leaders, and citizens committed to service. At the same time, however, through a broad array of curricular and extra-curricular activities, DC opens to students an entire world of opportunities, helping students to develop a distinctive Defiance College Resume that will enable them to stand out in the job market and when applying to graduate schools. From a broad-based liberal arts education, innovative programs that link what goes on in the classroom with the realities of the outside world and give students distinctive hands-on experience in their relevant fields, international and domestic travel opportunities, exposure to diverse cultural experiences, the use of technologies to bring the world into the classroom in Defiance and unique service and research opportunities, DC aims to give students the tools they need to become life-long learners and to make distinctive contributions to a changing world. While you are enjoying today’s events on campus, I hope you will have an opportunity to get to know some of our students individually. They are a wonderful group, with incredible potential. I very much enjoy being part of the Defiance College family with them, as they bring excitement, energy, fresh perspectives, and commitment to service, to name just a few of their many attributes. I want to thank our entire team, including players, coaches, trainers and staff, for the great work they do every day and the numerous ways in which they go “above and beyond” on a regular basis. I also want to thank our alumni, the parents of our athletes, and the various organizations, all of whom donate generously to our athletic programs. Members of the Defiance College Board of Trustees, the Purple and Gold Club, and the Alumni Varsity ‘D’ all contribute immeasurably as well, both as individuals and through their organizations. And the incomparable faculty at DC, together with extremely dedicated administrators and staff, all combine to make DC the special place that it is. We are pleased to have you as our guest at DC today, and I hope that you will return to campus frequently for both sporting events and the numerous cultural and academic events we are so proud to host. Go Jackets!

Sincerely, Mark C. Gordon, President

IN THE COMMUNITY

DC BASEBALL 2012 Defiance College has challenged students to defy the ordinary, to explore academic boundaries, to take on roles of civic responsibility and leadership, and to become engaged on campus and in the community. All of this makes for an extraordinary college experience. Nowhere else will you find students committed to their communities like Defiance College, and nowhere else will you find student-athletes and coaches as immersed in service and engagement. Members of all Defiance men’s and women’s intercollegiate sports teams participate in service projects. Many student-athletes at DC have taken leadership roles in service initiatives campus- and community-wide, and several have also received scholarships for international projects. Nicholas Bratt and Ryan McLaughlin are members of the DC baseball team who are Service Leaders for the current academic year. The Service Leader program rewards previous community service and develops students’ leadership skills. For the fifth-straight year, members of the Yellow Jackets baseball team helped to provide Defiance area residents a safe and convenient way to dispose of household hazardous waste. In the fall, team members and coaches volunteered to join forces with Johns Manville and the Defiance County Environmental Services Office to help dispose of thousands of pounds of hazardous waste materials. Members of the DC baseball team combined to spend 240 hours to collect and properly dispose of items as they were dropped off, helping to keep potentially harmful materials from doing damage to the environment. This is not out of the ordinary for Defiance College where student-athletes logged more than 2,940 hours of service in their community and around the country during the 2010-2011 academic year. Such experiences give Defiance College students a greater awareness of a diverse world and its needs as well as the leadership skills to create positive change.

ATHLETICS FACILITIES

GEORGE M. SMART ATHLETIC CENTER

CORESSEL STADIUM

DC BASEBALL 2012 Yellow Jacket Baseball utilizes several facilities on the Defiance College campus. Whether the team is competing against a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival at Craig A. Rutter Field, or eating a pre-game meal at the Serrick Campus Center, DC coaches, administration and staff are devoted to providing the squad with the best facilities possible. Rutter Field sits in the center of the DC athletics complex. The press box was finished in 2004 and is equipped with full sound capabilities, which provide the Yellow Jackets and their fans with an energetic pre-game atmosphere. A unique crushed brick infield with all grass baselines and a compacted limestone warning track accent a Kentucky Bluegrass and Perennial Rye field. All this is complimented by visiting and home dugouts, bullpens and the ‘Green Monster’ in center field. DC recently opened its 84,000 square-foot field house in February of 2012. The multi-purpose floor provides additional training areas for all 22 varsity athletic programs at Defiance College. The George also boasts a full athletic training room, expanded fitness and free-weight areas and two full-length batting cages.

Woodley was also an assistant at Bethany Lutheran for six seasons before taking over the reins of the program and saw the team win four league titles and three regional crowns during that time.

Along with the improved win total in 2010, Woodley also led the Jackets to new all-time single-season records for the program in at bats, hits, doubles, innings pitched, putouts, assists and fielding percentage. Woodley has worked hard to lay the foundation for a successful baseball program at Defiance College and has used his avid recruiting skills to consistently add depth and athleticism to the roster, while nearly doubling the squad size since coming to DC. Along with bolstering the roster and making numerous upgrades to DC’s baseball facilities, Woodley has also implemented an active camp schedule for local youth and high school prospects during the summer and winter months. Woodley has 18 years of coaching experience at the collegiate level and most recently served as the assistant coach at Manchester College prior to accepting his current position at DC. During his stint at Manchester, Woodley helped guide the Spartans to a pair of appearances in the HCAC Tournament in 2006 and 2007 in addition to claiming a Midwest Regional Title.

SEASON OUTLOOK

DC BASEBALL 2012 DEFIANCE, Ohio - Defiance College suffered a setback on the rebuilding trail in 2011, losing seven times by two runs or less, en route to a disappointing, 6-32, overall record on the diamond. Prior to last season, head coach Derek Woodley had guided the Defiance College baseball program to increasing win totals in back-to-back campaigns with a record-setting season in 2010.

bringing back 2010 staff ace and senior, Nicholas Bratt, who missed all of last season with an injury. The experienced unit on the mound will be one of the Yellow Jackets’ strengths in 2012, with Bratt expected to join fellow Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Preseason Players to Watch, junior Stephen Leskow and sophomore Darin Waterman, in the weekend rotation.

Not all was lost in 2011 however, as Defiance hurlers racked up 205 strikeouts for the thirdhighest tally in program history and the Yellow Jackets posted a top-five team fielding percentage in program history for the second-straight season.

Bratt’s ability to bounce back to his 2010 form will be one of the biggest keys to Defiance’s success in 2012. The Ottawa Lake, Michigan native notched three wins, 27 strikeouts and a 5.63 earned-run average during his last full season, while ranking 11th in the HCAC in ERA among pitchers with at least five games started on the bump.

Now entering his fifth year at DC, Woodley will look to continue those trends in order to build on the success of the 2010 breakthrough season. DC will have experience on its side, as it welcomes back nearly 70 percent of its production at the plate and on the mound from 2011. ROTATION Defiance returns 24-of-38 starts on the mound from the 2011 campaign, while also

BRATT 16

Leskow was DC’s most reliable starting pitcher one year ago, going at least five innings in seven-of-nine starts and holding foes to three earned runs or fewer in all but one HCAC outing. The Defiance, Ohio native was named Honorable Mention All-HCAC in 2011, after posting a 4.29 ERA in league action and ranking second on the Purple and Gold with 33 strikeouts.

LESKOW

Waterman led the squad in that category during his rookie year with the DC baseball program, fanning 47 batters in 50.1 innings of work. The Celina, Ohio native joined Leskow as an Honorable Mention All-HCAC selection, by opening his collegiate career with a 2-0 mark and a 2.48 ERA over his first five outings and ending with a DC-leading 10 starts. The trio of hard-throwing righties will be supplemented by Jake Taylor. The junior righthanded hurler took the ball for five starts in 2011 and saw action in 13 contests. Taylor figures to gain multiple mid-week starts, while serving as a key bullpen piece during weekend action. The St. Mary’s, Ohio native will need to improve his consistency this season, after giving up 20-of-44 earned runs in three outings one year ago.

ponents of the DC bullpen this year. Returning seniors Nate White and Clint Hoskins will also see time in relief. Patterson, Habecker and Schomaeker combined for 35 relief appearances last season and will provide Defiance with a trio of dependable options in the late innings. Patterson led all Yellow Jacket hurlers last season by posting a 5.02 ERA and held opponents to a .259 batting average with nobody on base, while the southpaw, Schomaeker, limited left-handed batters to a .125 clip and followed Patterson with a 5.40 ERA. Habecker racked up a team-leading 29.1 innings over 13 relief showings as DC’s long man and will look to continue a stretch that saw him post a 2.70 ERA over his final 10 innings of the 2011 campaign.

BULLPEN Junior hurlers Andy Habecker, Alex Schomaeker and Ryan McLaughlin, along with freshman Matt Goodpaster could all earn an occasional start for the Yellow Jackets in 2012 but are expected to join junior Aaron Patterson and senior Brett Belew as the key com-

Defiance used a closer-bycommittee approach last season and figures to do so once again in 2012. Schomaeker and McLaughlin could get the first look in the closer role however, with Habecker and Taylor poised to slam the door if called upon after each picked up a pair of saves during the 2011 season.

SEASON OUTLOOK

RILEY CATCHER DC’s veteran pitching staff will be received by senior Dave Riley. The Honorable Mention All-HCAC catcher started 33 games for the Jackets last season, setting career highs with a .255 batting average and seven doubles, while leading all HCAC catchers by throwing out 15 runners attempting to steal. Riley will have help, with freshmen Ian Burkhart and Brandon Riley set to join junior Jonathan Murphy on the depth chart. FIRST BASE The least experienced position on the diamond for Defiance in 2012 will be at first base. It will not be for a lack of options however, as Waterman and Habecker are expected to see time there when not on the mound. Returning sophomore Patrick Masopust could battle for starts after hitting .250 when in the starting lineup during his rookie campaign and freshman Stephen Yant will also get a chance to earn time at the position. SECOND BASE Rising sophomore Brad Kremer is the incumbent for DC at the keystone position with 30 starts one year ago but could slide across the diamond to see

LEHMAN time at third base in 2012. The move figures to open the door for rookies Chris Donese and Joel Musser to have an immediate impact on the lineup for the Purple and Gold. Senior Levi Pauli will give the Jackets a more experienced option at second base, after being voted the team’s Most Improved Player as a utility performer in 2011. SHORTSTOP The Jackets will hand the starting job to Bryn Lehman once again in 2012. The Defiance, Ohio native will enter his senior campaign ranked seventh in program history with 208 assists during his two seasons with the Jackets. Lehman began to contribute more at the plate as well, batting .269 over his final eight contests one year ago. Should Lehman need time off, DC will turn to Pauli or Donese to anchor the infield defense. THIRD BASE Brad Kremer is expected to take the reins at the hot corner for the Jackets, after leading the squad with 10 extra-base hits during his rookie campaign. Waterman and Pauli proved themselves capable at the position in 2010 and Musser should provide additional depth.

DC BASEBALL 2012

KREMER OUTFIELD Defiance will likely enter the campaign with senior Brent Kremer in left field, sophomore and HCAC Player to Watch, Aaron Helland, in center field and senior Braden Brugler or junior Jonathan Murphy in right. What the unit lacks in the power department, it makes up for with its on-base capabilities, as Kremer, Helland and Brugler have each posted full seasons with on-base percentages over the .350 mark in their careers at DC. Helland also provides plenty of speed, as the Defiance, Ohio native led all HCAC players with 21 steals during his rookie campaign. A crop of freshmen could battle for playing time in the outfield, with Musser, Nick Norris, Matt Staels and Adrian Serrato joining sophomore Trey Trumpower on the depth chart. DESIGNATED HITTER Much like the closer role on the pitching side of the roster, Defiance will ride the hot hand at the designated hitter slot on the lineup card throughout the 2012 campaign. Early candidates for the job are sophomores Waterman and Masopust, as well as the slugging freshman Burkhart.

DEFIANCE COLLEGE ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY

The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience an extra-curricular educational and physical activity that fits within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person.

The student-athlete will be exposed to a variety of opportunities for personal growth in the areas of intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social and physical dimensions as it relates to each individual and their respective sport. The student-athlete, as a team member, will be involved in a learning community that will strive for excellence both on the field and in the classroom while maintaining a dignity of fair play and continued emphasis on positive sportsmanship.

32

Jointly, the coaches and student-athletes will build an engaged environment that will accentuate the learning process not only within the competitive arena but also within the college campus and the

community as a whole. An emphasis will be placed on the impact of participation and personal growth, rather than scoreboard success, in a balanced sports program where equitable sports opportunities will be available to both genders. The student-athletes of Defiance College choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletics program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related financial aid or the promise of financial security through professional athletic stardom. Through participation in the intercollegiate athletics program, a student-athlete continues to compete for the love of sport, the thrill of competition and the fulfillment of countless intrinsic values. The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program strives to be an integral and cohesive part of the collegiate learning and living process, appropriately well suited to co-exist with the Defiance College mission statement…to know, to lead, to serve and to understand.
