He registers the events carefully in his mind, but the next day his father tries to convince him of a very different version of reality. The life of the family, from the midst of which the mother disappeared that night, is further built upon this marred foundation. Young Michael, who will later move to London and work there as an architect, does everything in his power to keep the family together; he is like a parent to his younger sister and brother.

manon uphoff (b. 1962) made her literary debut in 1995 with the short story “Poop”, which was awarded the Rabobank Spring Prize. Her oeuvre has enjoyed an extremely warm critical reception and two of her novels were nominated for the ako Literature Prize and the Libris Literature Prize.
