If you are feeling like you are wishing you are more involved on campus, now is the perfect time to seek out new opportunities with Fraternity and Sorority recruitment, Resident Assistant selection, and Peer Leader selection all happening in February. Additionally, students wishing to study abroad at any time during the 2013-2014 academic year must apply

by March 4, and the traditional housing deadline for next year is March 22.

First Year Residential Experience (FYRE) The First Year Residential Experience (FYRE) at Wagner College creates an engaging, supportive, and fun living environment in which students can connect with peers, faculty, and administrators as they transition into the Wagner. The primary goal of the FYRE program is to link academic and co-curricular experiences to foster holistic well-being and personal growth. The FYRE program includes a series of events and initiatives supporting first year residential students during their transition. First year commuter students are encouraged to participate as well!

Peer Leader Selection Peer Leaders are upperclass students who play an important role in welcoming new students to Wagner College through their active participation in the Orientation and Link Programs. They are a select group of student leaders who are trained to serve as social and academic guides for new students. Peer leaders aid in the transition to college life by serving as mentors and resources for new students. Each peer leader works closely with the faculty advisor, assists students in moving into the residence halls and is involved in helping students discover the many activities and organizations that students can connect with on campus.

Meet Our New CACE Staff!!!

As we start the new semester, we are thrilled to welcome two new full-time staff members as Assistant Directors in the Center for Academic and Career Engagement.

Barbara Bellesi will focus on Career Services and Employer Relations. She is thrilled to be returning to her alma mater - she graduated in 1999 with her BA in English and Theatre, and she later earned her MFA in Creative Writing from Emerson College. Over the past decade, Barbara has enjoyed a dual career path as both an educator and a writer. She has taught high school English and Theatre, served as an adjunct English instructor at Wagner, and has tutored and advised many students with a wide variety of interests and abilities. As a writer, Barbara has written countless articles and blog posts—many of which focus on higher education and career development--for a variety of print and online publications. She also earned her Certified Professional Resume Writer (CPRW) designation, which will be put to very good use in CACE at Wagner. A native Staten Islander, Barbara is a member of the Staten Island Economic Development Corporation’s 40 Under 40 Leadership Group. She has remained active in the Wagner community as a member of Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society and as an alumna advisor for Alpha Omicron Pi. Barbara is looking forward to connecting and reconnecting with many more faculty, students, and administrators on campus.

Kath Sanders will focus on Academic Support. She will serve as Director of the Writing Center, will supervise the WITs, will teach the Foundations and WIT courses, and will coach all of our students who are on academic probation. A native New Yorker raised in West Virginia, Kath looks forward to uniting practice and theory as she brings over a decade of master tutoring experience to her new position. Winner of the prestigious Maynard Mack writing prize, she graduated with honors from the University of Maryland, College Park, in 2000. Prior to moving to Staten Island in 2003, she worked as a medical technical writer in the Federal government. While earning her MA in English, Kath taught foundational writing courses and lead test-taking skills workshops at the College of Staten Island, CUNY. Kath is an active fundraiser for several Staten Island charities and an avid animal rescue supporter.

Black History Month Events LINCOLN FILM PANEL February 12, 5:30 – 7:30 PM Faculty Dining Room

A discussion on the 2012 American historical drama film directed and produced by Steven Spielberg, starring Daniel Day-Lewis as United States President Abraham Lincoln. The film is based in part on Doris Kearns Goodwin‘s biography of Lincoln,Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, and covers the final four months of Lincoln’s life, focusing on the President’s efforts in January 1865 to have the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution passed by the United States House of Representatives. INAUGURAL BLACK HISTORY MONTH SCHOLAR SYMPOSIUM February 13, 4:30-5:30 PM Spiro 2 Dr. Tricia Rose (Ph.D, Brown University, American Civilization, 1993) is Professor of Africana Studies. She specializes in 20th century African-American culture and politics, social history, popular culture/hip-hop, gender and sexuality. Her lecture will focus on creative and visionary strategies developed by artists, communities and movements to build a more just society.
