V-Twin Expo advance dealer registrations “up over same time last year” according to organiser PEAKING exclusively to AMD magazine, V-Twin Expo General Manager Jim Betlach revealed that advance registrations from dealers saying that they intend to visit the show in February (Cinciannati, February 4-6) are running ahead compared to the same stage in advance of the 2011 show. AMD spoke with Betlach at the end of November and he said “registrations were running behind until a week or so before Thanksgiving, but as we head into December more dealers are now saying that they intend to visit the expo in 2012 than was the case at this time last year”. As ever, Betlach is realistic about show expectations, saying that the show is was currently hovering at just over the 200 exhibitor mark, and he accepts that this is somewhat lower than 2011, and sees the trend of recent years continuing. “Anybody who thinks that we have seen the full extent of the decline in the custom v-twin parts and accessory market in the United States

is fooling themselves. “The fact of the matter is that consolidation is continuing and if I were a betting man I would judge that it may well have a way to go yet”. Preferring to focus on the unique advantages that V-Twin Expo delivers, Betlach was guarded when asked to comment about any impact seen on the event as a result of the re-branding of the hitherto weak custom area at the Indianapolis Dealer Expo. “To be honest with you I am only aware of one exhibitor who has pulled out of our show in order to focus their efforts at Indianapolis since their announcement was made. The historically proven case for specialty focus is more relevant to the market at this time than ever before. “V-Twin Expo is a bellwether for the market’s own business cycle and when the level of available parts and accessories sales are sufficient to sustain growth, then the industry will surely see that reflected in our exhibitor and visitor numbers. “Meantime, if dealers can only afford to attend one expo, then not to

make that an event that caters to core business is an inappropriate allocation of resources. There is no question whatsoever that V-Twin Expo 2012 will offer exhibitors and dealers alike access to the primary market place for the custom v-twin parts and accessory and Harley-Davidson aftermarket industry, and will continue to do so into the future”. The 2012 V-Twin Expo seminar lineup includes new additions. Following the America Invents Act, the first major overhaul of the US patent system since 1952, there will be a “Patent Law Changes and How They Impact You” seminar. With the motorcycle audio market booming (!) “Make Noise on Audio Sales” will focus on dealer profit opportunities from the Bagger/Tourer audio upgrade sector; the still growing Tourer market will also come under focus with a “Bagger Market review” seminar, and selected leading customizers will also have examples of their custom Bagger work showcased in a dedicated market sector area.

Better products at ever better prices – part deux! T has been another busy month for motorcycle expo trips in Europe since I wrote last, with the Zodiac Dealer Show at the Big Twin Show in The Netherlands followed immediately by the ‘Milan Show’ (EICMA – the world’s largest motorcycle expo), and then the popular Custom Bike Show at Bad Salzuflen in northern Germany. The good news is that attendances at Milan and Bad Salzuflen were strong again, and that most exhibitors, at most shows (including Zodiac International) are reporting that they had a better year in 2011 and expect 2012 to see further improvements in the market in Europe. This is in stark contrast to the continuing market cycle being seen in the United States, where even if vendors are defending profits successfully, they are doing so through house-keeping and still flat sales (especially in the final few months of the year) rather than through any bounce in market volume. As we all start preparing to head for the V-Twin Expo at Cincinnati in February, organiser Jim Betlach is reporting that dealer attendee pre-registrations have started to run ahead of the same period for the 2011 show (see this month’s cover story). He says that while the show has seen further (all be it modest) decline in exhibitor numbers, and continuing retrenchment in booth size terms, his sense is that the V-Twin Expo will deliver viable business opportunity critical mass. espite having stubbed my toe in forecasting terms two years ago, I remain among those who believe that what we are enduring at the moment is the landscape to be found at the bottom of a very broad U-curve. There is no way that the sales revenues and volumes of five years ago are ever going to return this side of the mid-twenty first century, and even if they were to do so their characteristics would bear little resemblance to the unsustainable nonsense that fuelled the heights from which the collapse of the market can now be viewed. Instead, what lies ahead for us is very reassuring in many ways. What we are seeing is the emergence of a true level of market growth since the late 80s, a sustainable growth that in historic terms probably represents low to mid single digit progress over a 20-25 year period. A market composed of sustainable, real-life buying of modestly priced bolt-on custom products, streetsane performance and tuning work that meets regulatory pressures as well as petrol-head emotions, and a service and workshop based culture that should always have remained at the beating heart of what underpins our industry. It remains broadly true, regardless of what has happened to new motorcycle sales, that more people continue to want to do more miles each year, on more motorcycles, and that such a foundation is one that is infinitely better proofed against the fickle fortunes of fashion and fiscal cycles. 25 years ago if we had been offered the kind of net-of-recession growth that remains after the recent financial apocalypse, the chances are that most of the vendors in the market at that time would have bitten your arm off for such a vision. In that time, we have of course seen the nature of what is bought by riders change beyond all recognition, but in amongst the sea of rapid and radical change

that has taken place in both strategic and demographic terms, what hasn’t changed is that we have an industry supported by a vast number of people who want to enjoy the motorcycle ownership and riding experience. The consumer expectations that shape, color and flavor the experience that riders are now demanding is radically different, but the common denominator is having fun and, as discussed last month, seeking out ever-better products at ever-better prices. In some regards, our market is now in the luxurious position of being able to focus on delivering on that consumer demand in a way in which it simply could not do during the custom build bubble. usiness is a relatively simple concept. Sell products that your customers want for more money than you paid for them. A lot of the static that artificially complicated what we were supposed to be doing as an industry all along has now evaporated and the clarity with which we can now approach the future is reassuring. The capital requirements of the parts and accessories industry are now a great deal lower than they were, and the unsuitable lending practices that kept our cash registers ringing are now a thing of the past. We may not like what has happened to us, but if we are smart we sure as heck start to like the place we now find ourselves in and what it means for the future. In among all the changes and issues that we have faced and still are confronted with the one thing that has not happened is that millions of riders have woken up one morning with “urrrggghhh, I liked riding motorcycles once? What was I thinking…” Regardless of the economic and regulatory impacts our industry has to deal with, and regardless of the competitive leisure dollar options we are exposed to, provided riders still want to ride there will be opportunities for businesses to sell to them. The time has long since gone for hand-wringing about what it is we are able to sell, but instead to embrace the fundamentals of capitalism that have always driven the evolution of all markets… namely to be offering better products at better prices and be able to speak to the market that does exist, rather than crying into our beer about the one that has disappeared.

Hybrid Can Am planned by BRP BOMBARDIER Recreational Products (BRP) launched its Can Am Spyder trike in 2007 and the company has now begun development work on a hybrid version, which will combine a conventional petrol engine with an electric motor. The planned new drivetrain from BRP will use a 600cc internal combustion engine in combination with a 20kW continuous power electric motor powered by a Lithiumion battery to give performance similar to the existing Spyder 990 RS roadster. BRP states that it aims to have the hybrid Spyder offer a 20mile range in electric mode, while offering a 50 percent improvement in fuel efficiency and a 50 percent reduction in emissions. New models launched by Headbanger HEADBANGER Motorcycles, an Italian custom bike shop which competed in the Production Manufacturer class at the 2010 World Championship of Custom Bike Building, has launched two new models for 2012. The two motorcycles, the Summertime and Woodstock Boogie, were unveiled at the 2011 EICMA trade show in Italy and join a line-up of four existing models. Both of the two new models are based around a Softail style frame with 34 degrees of rake and carrying a choice of 16in or 21in front and

16in rear wheels. Front suspension on both is a choice of 41mm diameter telescopic forks or a Springer set-up. Power for the Summertime is provided by a 93ci S&S Knucklehead style motor with a carb and Headbanger 2-into-1 exhaust system providing Euro-3 compliance. This is matched to a five-speed transmission via a choice of a 13â &#x201E;4in or 3in belt drive. To give the bike retro styling to match the engine choice, it is fitted with a nine-liter gas tank, mounted high Frisco style, T-bars and a small sissybar. The satin finish on the body work

LWAYS a bellwether for the season ahead in Europe, Zodiac International’s annual Dealer Show profiles US and European vendors from their extensive custom v-twin and Harley replacement parts program. In recent years, like most shows, the event has reflected the fluctuating fortunes of the marketplace, but this year the good news was that dealers were placing larger orders. The emphasis is still on service items, replacement parts and bolt-on custom products rather than the top-ticket items of years past, but in dependency on product supply areas for which there is consistent demand, Zodiac, their dealers and the market in general are demonstrating that the industry has fundamental strength. Whilst speculation about where sales will go in the coming years varies from the flatliners to the u-curvers, right through to the probably overoptimistic who see meaningful growth ahead in the next 36 months. Most experienced analysts hover around the middle view in their expectations, putting future annual growth at low but sustainable single digits and anticipating (or should that be hoping) that 2012 will see a consolidation of the stability that finally emerged in 2011. At least, that is the view in Europe where, by and large, the custom v-twin parts and accessories and Harley aftermarket sectors have fared better in the past three or four years than has been the case in the United States. That goes a long way to explaining why events in Europe such as Zodiac’s are still strongly supported by US vendors. 10 years ago my best guesstimate was that something in the region of 15-20 percent of the world-wide parts and accessories market existed outside of the United States, with the bulk of that being in Europe; these days estimates suggest that anything up to 30 percent or more of the value and volume of custom v-twin and Harley aftermarket parts and accessories sales is now to be found in Europe - perhaps as much as 35 or 40 percent in all ’international’ markets. In Zodiac’s case, depth of inventory, hard earned dealer loyalty and the experience of their international network of sales managers has helped the Netherlands based distributor to remain one of, if not the, primary sources of choice for dealers throughout Europe.

While the market in Europe is facing ever-increasingly fierce pressures, Zodiac’s ability to attract new vendors and offer strong new product additions keeps the company’s profile high. Bobber style bike in a Softail frame. The traditional Bobber style is very popular these days, but a lot of the show bikes lack comfort. We always say that a bike is primarily for riding, so we decided to build a vintage looking Bobber on a Kraft-Tech Softail frame, around an S&S Knuckle engine, to show people that style doesn't have to compromise comfort. “We are really looking forward to 2012. Business wise we think that we can at least do as well as in 2011, even though the economic climate remains uncertain. In some areas sale have obviously gone down, but other parts of the market are doing well. So all in all, we are still doing good, and looking at how the show went, and with all the changes in the custom market, we think we could even see some growth. “Our racing season went very

well this year, with the new blower bike performing in the 6.60 and 6.50 second range, with a best quarter mile speed of 218 MPH / 350KPH. We ended up 2nd in the European Championship, which is pretty good. But if it hadn't been for a crack in the plenum (the supercharger pressure chamber) during the semi finals of the last race, we think we would have had a good chance of scooping the championship title again. Too bad, because it was Roel Koedam's last year in the saddle of our drag bike, as he is retiring. “However, Zodiac Racing will continue next year with our new rider Job Heezen. DIAG4BIKE: Noted Czech company ATAL, a member of the ACTIA Group ( an international automotive company who have 20 years of experience producing diagnostic tool for cars) has now entered the motorcycle diagnostic market. The company gave a global debut to their DIAG4BIKE diagnostics project for serial and parallel diagnostics of OE ECM at the motorcycle show in Prague in March 2011. Zodiac International are the first v-twin industry distributor to sell the product line, which is available for Harley Davidson, BMW and KTM models (Buell and Triumph are in preparation). The DIAG4BIKE range allows non-franchised dealers the same opportunities to download and interrogate data as those enjoyed by workshops equipped with the OE tools. There are still plenty of wheel manufacturers around in the custom bike industry today, but not many of them have a similar business model to Renegade Wheels. AMD’s Duncan Moore talks to founder and President Chuck Frederick to discover the reasons why renegade is the perfect brand name... ENEGADE Wheels’ President and founder, Chuck Frederick never set out to be a custom motorcycle wheel manufacturer. Rather, it was a role he simply drifted into as he aimed to make his bike his own. As a youngster, Chuck was heavily into motorcycles, going so far as to race supercross and take street bikes on track days. However, he realized he was taking more and more risks in order to get a buzz from the rides. He knew he needed to slow down and when he got married he made the decision to give bikes up altogether. Like everyone who rides, the need to be on two wheels never left Chuck and after 10

years of not riding he found himself in a Harley dealership. Both his best friend and his neighbor had decided to buy themselves bikes, and knowing that Chuck had ridden and raced in the past, they turned to him for advice. It was then he realized how much he missed riding and made the decision to buy a new bike. He takes up the story: “At the time, I was running a very successful marine rep business, the economy was booming and I was able to ride out on a new 2003 Anniversary model Fat Boy.” The only issue Chuck had with his new bike was that his friend had bought the same model and they had problems distinguishing

between the two bikes when they went out riding together. The simple answer was to change the wheels out for a custom set. iven the fact that there were about five different manufacturers making wheels for Harleys within twenty miles of his home, this should have been an easy option. It didn’t work out as planned. None of them

had the wheels Chuck wanted in stock. “They all told us we could have what we wanted but we’d have to wait for them,” says Chuck. “At that time the industry was doing really well and companies didn’t worry too much about keeping customers waiting. There were plenty of customers who were willing to accept those long lead times. My business specialty, however, is working closely with the supply chain so there is always inventory ready to go. There was

no supply chain like that in the bike wheel business.” The disappointment at the lack of readily available supply was the catalyst for the formation of Renegade Wheels. As Chuck and his friend could not find what they wanted, they set out to create their own custom wheels. “We started out by making two sets of wheels—one set for my bike and one set for my friend’s bike,” says Chuck. “However, the people that made them did not do a very good job. The brake on one side was so far out of alignment that the wheel just locked up causing my friend to go down with his bike.” espite this bad start, the duo persevered and produced a second version, using different people to do the work. Those wheels got noticed and people began to ask Chuck how he got his custom wheels so quickly. And so, like many companies in the custom bike industry, those questions and requests for

wheels led to the beginning of Renegade Wheels. “That first year of business it [Renegade Wheels] was basically nothing more than a hobby. We contracted all the manufacturing processes out and we still do. The machining, the polishing, the plating is all contracted out. We do the design, assembly and inventory control in-house, though.” Chuck then went on to explain why he takes this unusual approach to business, getting others to do the work rather than bringing it all in-house: “I get other people to do well what they do well, and I do well what I do well, which is managing the supply chain and getting our wheels out to people who want them, when they want them.” In the early days of Renegade Wheels, Chuck contracted the machining of the forged wheel blanks purchased to just a single contractor. Now as the business has grown and expanded, so has the number of machine shops Renegade contracts work out to. He now works with up to eight different shops at any one time. he change to the working practice was not just prompted by the increased

demand for wheels as Chuck explains: “At first we took the contractor we used through the wheel manufacturing process and involuntarily made them into a competitor. However, we learned from that and now we have multiple shops making product for us. This means that during quiet periods we don’t have to lay people off and because we spread the work around between multiple machine shops it doesn’t adversely affect them either. “If I went to only one shop and had him doing so much work for me that I was the only company he was doing work for, then when I reduce my orders in the winter he would have to lay staff off. With the business model we employ that doesn’t happen.” This practice of having multiple options for having machine work done as needed is one of the reasons Renegade is

able to continually fulfill its orders so quickly. “We carry a lot of inventory, but if we get a call and don’t have a wheel in stock we can get it to the customer within a three to four week time frame,” explains Chuck. “I don’t have to stop a production run of one design and then retool for the design the customer wants. I simply order from one of the machine shops I work with and they can run the wheel order for me along with their regular production. If one shop is not able to take the job on, for any reason, I can take it to a different one that we use and the work still gets done.” The ability to be able to select different machine shops to take on jobs has also come into play with the introduction of ABS by the Motor Company. Due to the increased tolerances that the ABS components need in order to work correctly, the level and quality of machine work needed on the wheels has increased. For other wheel manufacturers this means costly investment in new machinery and increased staff training; for Renegade it is simply a case of reaching out to machine shops that have experience in the aerospace industry. Chuck explains, “We now work with a lot of machine shops that have aircraft industry experience because they are used to working within such close tolerances. If I specify a 0.005 inch clearance they’ll machine it to 0.002 inches. It’s not strictly necessary for what we are doing, but that’s the way they operate. That’s reassuring for us because it means we can have supreme confidence in our product.” nowing which machine shop to use to get each individual wheel design machined is a key

Paul has challenged us to do some things outside the box part of Chuck’s strategy. “Alongside the close tolerance of ABS-ready wheels, we have a lot of wheels that are very aesthetic and we need to use machinists who can work to the demands this involves. We tend to match the job we require to the shops best suited to doing that type of work: extreme precision or complex aesthetics.” The aesthetics that Renegade is capable of creating have been tested many times. One customer who has done this more than most is Paul Teutel Jr. of the American Chopper series. “I’ve known Vinnie (DiMartino) and Cody (Connelly) for a few years,” says Chuck. “When Vinnie and Cody left OCC to start V-Force Customs, Renegade made the wheels they used in their builds. Two years later Paul Jr. started out on his own. While he was building his first signature bike he got a call from Geico to build a bike for them, also. In need of a wheel

supplier, he spoke to Vinnie, and Vinnie put him in touch with me. “Since then we’ve done in the region of a dozen custom, oneoff wheel designs for Paul Jr.’s bike builds. He is very active on the design of every wheel we have made for him. We can start with a drawing on the back of a napkin from him and then talk

through the details he wants and create a 3D model. Once we’re all happy with the final design, the file then goes to one of our machine shop collaborators to be made.” The working relationship between Paul Jr. and Renegade Wheels now includes a signature series of PJD wheel designs and matching air cleaners, which Continued on page 20 >>>

Given the name “Garden Party,” the three-day event took place in a 6,000 square foot storefront at the Anaheim Garden Walk in Southern California, very close to the Motor Company event at the Anaheim Convention Center and adjacent to Tom Scott’s Harley-Davidson of Anaheim satellite store. At the temporary store the entire Renegade team was in attendance and met with over 800 H-D dealer personnel from over 18 countries. The dealers were also able to take in displays by Danny Gray, Heartland USA, Avon and Dragonfly. Alongside those companies’ displays was one of Renegade’s own – named

AIM lock-up clutches AIM has now released a line of lockup clutches that have been designed to work with high performance motors. Springers Custom Cycles production models SPRINGERS Custom Cycles offers a range of four production models with each having a range of options that can be specified by the customers. All four models in the range, Zeus, Hera, Ares and Hercules, are all built on Kraft Tech frames housing EPA certified 110ci RevTech motors and six–speed transmissions with BDL 3in open primaries. Phatillac body kit OLD Skool Cycle Werks has extended the range of Bagger body kits it offers with the introduction of its Phatillac kit. The three-piece kit, a fender with integrated bags and two side panels, takes its inspiration from late ’50 and early ‘60s Cadillac cars and fits all H-D Touring models from ‘95-‘12. A revised version is due for release which will fit ‘10-’11 bikes. New pipes from Samson SAMSON has two new exhaust options available; the Legend Series Cannons and Legend Series Sidewinders. ‘Milan Show’ attempts to embrace custom market The 69th annual EICMA ‘Milan Show’ in November saw ANCMA, the Italian Motorcycle Industry Trade Association that organises the expo, reach out to embrace the fast-growing Italian custom v-twin market with mixed results... HE custom motorcycle industry in Europe has long since transitioned from motorcycle industry sidebar to viable mainstream player, and with that growth has come opportunities as well as pitfalls. That custom motorcycles can be a potent ‘poster child’ for the wider mission of turning consumers onto two wheel transport and lifestyle options in general is well accepted in Europe. That the challenges of regulatory impact and public perception need to be addressed by those who would seek to provide the custom market with a showcase, is also an accepted matter of importance for the market. Indeed, this is being increasingly

recognised and realised by show projects whose roots are based in the custom market - we’d like to think that the planned International Custom Conference at our own Big Bike Europe in May 2013 is just such an example. However, in contradistinction the attempts to court the custom market by those whose perspectives are rooted within ‘traditional’ mainstream motorcycling can often appear to be gauche. The Milan show is to be congratulated for being prepared to recognise the phenomenal growth that the Italian custom market has seen in the past five years, and for endeavouring to provide a showcase for the international success and

profile that Italian custom bike builders and parts and accessory manufacturers and designers have been achieving. Their natural instinct to collaborate with industry leaders is also to be commended, but in so doing ANCMA must seek advice in order to ensure that it casts its net widely and avoids the trap of allowing its presentation to be dominated by any single sectional press or vendor interests. Custom Chrome Europe and LowRide Magazine did an excellent job of creating a start-point for the show’s first serious attempt at engaging with the custom motorcycle market, but any trade association lending its name to a specific sector of the motorcycle industry must be aware

interests and reflective of the market as a whole. in consumer terms, the custom market still has historical issues of public perception to overcome if it is to be able to join the top table of the motorcycle industry. The custom market has been working hard to address the negative baggage that is sometimes associated with certain sectors of the enthusiast footprint, regularly enduring negative press coverage and ill-informed

commentary. It was a surprise therefore to see that EICMA hosted an exhibit by one of the better-known patch clubs because in so doing conflicting questions arise. Did they extend that courtesy to all patch clubs? Did they take input from the custom motorcycle industry as to whether or not the consumer audience that a show such as EICMA attracts would regard such associations as being positive messaging for the enjoyment that is to

whether the 1970s-esque interpretation of “biker culture” that saw one of the world’s leading softcore pornography publishers taking centre stage is appropriate and reflective of the custom market’s values as we head towards the mid 21st century. All credit is due to Custom Chrome Europe and Yamaha for the prizes they provided for the Saturday custom bike show - especially to Yamaha Italia for putting up a new VMAX worth €22.500. Abnormal Cycles, popular winner of this year’s modified Harley-Davidson World Championship and several of the year’s championship programme affiliate events, were worthy winners of the Best of Show for their nowfamous ‘Union’ 1940s flathead side-car. In Guiseppe Roncen (of LowRide Magazine fame) the custom bike show jury had a worthy and reliable chairperson with most of the class wins being taken by excellent bikes produced by well regarded customizers such as Boccin Custom Cycles, Asso Special Bike, Garage65, OMT Garage and Totti Mottori. Other judges included Michael Lichter, Fabrice Roux (Freeway Magazine, France), Horst Roesler, Daniel GilDelgardo (Xtreme Bikes and Cafe Racers, Spain), Minoru Uemura (Vibes Magazine, Japan), John Campbell (Canadian Biker) and noted Italian customizer and head of design for Headbanger Motorcycles, Luciano Andreoli. EICMA is a six day show, including the press day, so staging the custom

bike show as a one day event on the Saturday when maximum crowds were available made sense of an otherwise difficult proposition as, inclusive of set-up and tear-down, no competitors would be able to afford to display their bikes, or be in attendance, for a full week. On the other hand though a one day only show misses the opportunity to market the output of Italy’s leading customizers to two or three days of peak attendance. On a moving forward basis it is to be hoped that the largest public attendance motorcycle expo in the world is able to come up with a competitive formula that does justice to the opportunity. EICMA needs to re-interpret its mission and opportunity away from clumsily trying to appeal to the custom market’s existing tribe, and instead towards exploiting the opportunity custom bikes offer to appeal to new consumers for riding in general, and for the custom market in particular. By way of one final ‘memo to EICMA’, contrary to the claims stated in their post show press release this is not the “first time” that the custom world has been showcased “within an international trade fair” - the organisers could do worse than taking a look at how Intermot/IVM have been handling their Cologne Custom Cup since it made its debut as an AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building affiliate event in 2008. www.AMDchampionship.com

Harley-Davidson’s Sportster has often been maligned as the poor relation in the Motor Company’s line-up of bikes. However, the status has not stopped custom builders from turning their attention to it. One such builder, Bernard ‘Buck’ Massart, of V-Twin Mechanic has taken a Sportster and rebuilt it into a machine that is barely recognizable as the baby American V-twin USTOM bike builders in Europe have a different view of what makes a good custom due in part to the way customs developed differently outside of the USA, and because for many years the cost of Harleys, whether new or used, placed them out of the range of many builders, when compared to Japanese and British bikes. As a result of these points, Sportsters have been more popular in Europe than their native US, and one builder who has taken a unique route with a Sportster based build is Bernard ‘Buck’ Massart. Buck, the owner of V-Twin Mechanic in La Fontaine, France, began the build of Spacester, his 4th placed entry in the Freestyle class at the 2011 World Championship of Custom Bike Building. Talking about his build, Buck says: “I wanted to create a futuristic vision of a bike, trying to hide everything that is necessary to ride the bike. And the paint colors were chosen to match the look of the space shuttle to further the futuristic look.”

The starting point for Buck’s futuristic build was a stock ’87 XL1200 motor. While it has been left internally as it came from the factory, the exterior has been highly modified. The most immediately obvious change to the engine’s appearance is the filling in of the ‘V’ between the two cylinders. That idea of filling in also continues with the extension of the cooling fins on each cylinder around the pushrod tubes. Due to the changes to the engine’s look the intake ports have been modified to allow the manifold to place the Keihin FCR carburetor carb between the frame’s main rails, while the exhaust headers have been routed as close to the engine as possible with the rear fitting between the cam chest and the output sprocket cover for the transmission. Both headers feed into the bike’s belly pan, which houses the muffler and the exit is on the left side in between the back of the transmission and the leading edge of the back wheel. he frame from which the motor is hung, as a stressed member, is made up of steel tubes that have been covered in sheet steel to create the simple looking twin spar frame, where it splits into two behind the headstock with >>>

In addition to carrying the engine, the frame now also acts as the bikeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s oil tank with what at first appears to be the oil tank actually housing the battery and electronics. In order to get Spacester rolling Buck then bolted a front end from a Yamaha R1 up. The USD fork has been shortened by 3in and had the brake mounts modified to allow them to carry the calipers for the dual perimeter brakes. The calipers themselves where originally meant to slow a scooter down, and the discs they bite on were made by Buck himself. The wheels, upon which the discs are mounted, came from a Suzuki, and measure 2.75 x 18in at the front and 4 x18in at the rear, and both are shod with Avon tires. The controls for the bike include a hydraulic front brake and clutch lever on the handlebars that operate master cylinders hidden inside the bodywork and foot pegs that pivot to provide gear changes and rear braking. While Buck did the majority of the work on Spacester himself, he did contract the paintwork out and that was completed by Hot Quad et Tiz Creation. At the World Championship Buck was not only the sole French representative, he was also the highest placed builder to use a motor from the Harley factory, and to reward this achievement Harley-Davidson presented him with a Screaminâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Eagle 120 R crate motor when he went to the stage to collect his 4th place trophy.

CCE Supporting young builders CUSTOM Chrome Europe (CCE) has created a new award which it will be presenting at its 2012 Dealer Show. The Rookie Award has been created to encourage a new generation of custom bike builders. Entrants are being accepted on the company’s Facebook page - Custom Chrome Europe GmbH – and entrants

need only to have built the bike they are entering themselves and be no older than 29 on March 25th 2012. Court Upholds K&N Design Rights and Performance Claims K&N Engineering of Riverside, California, has won a law suit filed against Spectre Performance (of Ontario, California) for false advertising and unfair competition. The action was brought in the United States District Court for the Central District of California (Eastern Division) and involved a jury trial that included seven days of testimony by 14 witnesses and the introduction of hundreds of exhibits. After 3 hours of deliberation, the jury reached a unanimous

verdict that Spectre, an importer of Chinese made cotton fiber and cotton gauze air filters that are similar in appearance to K&N's products, had intentionally engaged in various forms of false advertising and awarded K&N $7.3 million in compensation. The finding says that Spectre had intentionally made false claims regarding its products and non-existent CARB approvals.

The jury also threw out Spectre's claims against K&N alleging that the noted originator of cotton filter media technology had falsely advertised the horse-power capability of its products. Furthermore, the jury unanimously found in favour of K&N that its own advertising was not false. Steven Rogers, CEO of K&N, stated that he was "pleased

with the outcome of the trial which should bring a final end to Spectre's making false claims designed to influence consumers with misinformation dressed in the guise of tests that were not reliable, were not performed, or were not representative of the actual characteristics of their products." K&N introduced re-useable cotton gauze filters over 40 years ago and remains a family owned business. Lehman to explore investment options LEHMAN Trikes’ Board of Directors has announced that it is looking at a range of alternatives to enhance s h a r e h o l d e r v a l u e, w h i c h includethe possibility of selling the company. In order to undertake the study of financial options the company’s Board has formed a committee of Directors. The options they will be exploring include and are not limited to the afore-mentioned sale

of the company, cost savings initiatives, or a strategic business merger. An expression of interest from an investment firm to engage in a due diligence review, with a view to making a significant investment in Lehman Trikes has already been received. During this review period, which coincides with the company’s traditional slow time, Lehman will continue to conduct
