Waikato Stud Matamata Swifts v Waiuku ASB Chatham Cup - 2pm, Saturday May 9

Challenge Matamata Swifts Ladies v Cambridge Waikato Ladies Division B - 11am, Sunday May 10

A Few Kind Words Welcome to the Matamata Domain for this weekend’s ASB Chatham Cup 1st round match against Waiuku. The club is delighted to draw a home fixture in this round, after being forced to travel north in the qualifying round. Our reward for getting past that trickier than necessary 2015 outing is NRFL Division 1 opposition. Management It’s safe to say the quality of today’s visitors will be Committee several levels, and then some, up on Auckland Wanderers, but it gives us an opportunity to measure our progress Patron since taking on the likes of Ellerslie in pre-season. Jack Poole In a way we have a natural affinity with Waiuku, given we’re both small rural clubs. We’ve had some good President encounters over the years, particularly back in the ‘90s, so Julie Clothier it’s great to be able to renew our old school rivalry. Vice-President I still follow the NRFL and it’s been pleasing to watch Malcolm Raynel Waiuku’s progress into Division 1 and their solid start to Treasurer life at that level. We struggled when we had our opportunity Dave Mann back in 2011, so we’re fully aware of just how tough life at Secretary that level can be. Debbie Sankey Assuming I make it back from Hamilton on time, after a late kick-off for my junior team, I’ll look forward to catching Club Captain up with Jim and watching how his team has evolved from Ronan Costello the last time they visited the Domain. On that day we were Committee 3-1 up at one stage before falling apart to lose 4-3 in what Pete Challis turned out to be our final home match in the NRFL. Most Ana Paterson fans would be delighted if we see a similarly entertaining Junior Convenor game today. Cathy O’Callaghan We’d like to thank Richardson Racing Stables for Club Development Mgr coming on board recently as naming sponsor of the Swifts Dwayne Barlow reserves. That means all three senior teams now have front of shirt sponsors. Thanks to Richie and Rochelle for placing this sort of faith in the club. The logo looks pretty cool on a PICTURED background of black and white! FROM THE SWIFTS ARCHIVE A LOT HAS GONE ON DURING OUR 85 YEARS. HERE’S A QUICK LOOK BACK IN TIME...

Our focus is on ASB Chatham Cup football today, so here’s an interesting piece from the archives. For the record, Matamata was defeated 4-1 by Clendon, but were still in the match at half time. A goal from Wayne Graves saw us trail 2-1 at the break, but the visitors made sure of the result in the second half. Current Swifts Mini-Kickers coach, Tony Merry, was Matamata’s man of the match. Matamata Swifts AFC was established in 1930 and we’re celebrating our 85 years over the course of the 2015 season.

Carter Memorial Women’s Challenge Cup Presented by Matamata Swifts AFC

Today’s Waikato Women’s League Division B match between Challenge Matamata Swifts Ladies and Cambridge White sees the introduction of a new trophy to the local football scene. The Carter Memorial Women’s Challenge Cup was donated by the local Carter family for women’s competition. It will be introduced as a challenge cup, similar to the men’s Federation Challenge Shield. The cup will be up for grabs at all home league and cup games of the holders. The team holding the cup at the end of each season will have their name engraved for that year. As the Carter Memorial Women’s Challenge Cup was an initiative of Matamata Swifts AFC and the Carter family, Challenge Matamata Swifts Ladies will be the initial holders.
