Game #18 continued

DAyton 72 fordham 71 JANUARY 14, 2009 • UD ARENA • DAYTON, OHIO The UD men’s basketball team was led by junior Rob Lowery’s clutch shooting as the Flyers staved off an Atlantic 10 upset by surviving the Fordham Rams in the final seconds, 72-71, at UD Arena. With the win, Dayton improved to 15-2 overall and evened its conference record at 1-1. It was the 13th straight home win for the Flyers. The Rams dropped to 2-13 with an 0-3 mark in A-10 play. The Flyers received double-digit scoring efforts from three different players, including Lowery, who notched 13 points and scored the game-winning bucket with five seconds to go. Fellow junior Marcus Johnson poured in 12, which marked his eighth-straight game in double figures. Senior Charles Little also added 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting in a supporting role. A 15-3 run would put the home squad up by 11 with 12:50 to go. During the run, UD fans saw a monstrous tomahawk jam from Devin Searcy off a fast-break dish from London Warren and two straight Charles Little slams which gave UD a 50-42 advantage. The Flyer Faithful then breathed a collective sigh of relief with 3:16 remaining as Lowery drained his third trey of the night to put the Flyers on top 65-61. Fordham came right back, however, with a 10-5 run over the next 2:21, culminating with two free throws by Trey Blue with 15 seconds to go. Lowery then stormed down the court and maneuvered through the lane for what would be the game-winning layup. Game #16

Massachusetts 75, dayton62 JANUARY 10, 2009 • MASSMUTUAL CENTER • SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS For the third straight season, the Minutemen stopped a Flyer winning streak heading into conference play. This time it stopped a Flyer six-game winning streak, as the Flyers dropped their first Atlantic 10 game of the season. UMass shot 52 percent from the field, had nine blocks and out rebounded UD 33-26. After trailing 39-36, the Flyers went on a run and took the lead briefly off a Rob Lowery dunk. However, the Minutemen countered with a 20-2 run of their own to take a 59-42 lead with 10:28 to play. During the UMass run, UD did not have a point in a six-minute stretch and did not have a field goal for nearly nine minutes. UMass extended the lead to 59-44 with 7:39 remaining and kept the pressure on throughout the second half. Luke Fabrizius nailed back-to-back three pointers to cut the Minutemen advantage to 63-54 with four minutes to play. The Minutemen however pushed the lead back to 15 at 71-56 with less than two minutes remaining to hold for the victory. Game #18

Dayton 78 Duquesne 69 JANUARY 17, 2009 • A.J. PALUMBO CENTER • PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA The University of Dayton Flyers played a strong defensive contest, quieted a Duquesne crowd with thunderous dunks, and used an explosive second half in a 78-69 victory against the Dukes in a key Atlantic 10 matchup. The Flyers used a balanced attack as five Dayton players scored in double figures. Rob Lowery paced the offense with a team-high 16 points. Chris Wright dropped a 15 spot. Freshmen Luke Fabrizius and Chris Johnson also came up big. Fabrizius scored a career-high 11 points, drilling 3-of-5 from downtown, while Johnson accounted for 10 points and nine rebounds. Marcus Johnson scored nine of his 11 points in the second half including the basket on a steal and dunk that gave UD its biggest lead of the night, 70-58, with 3:30 to play. Marcus Johnson tied a career-best with four steals. Dayton continued to be solid on the boards, out-rebounding the Dukes 36-30, and improving to 15-0 on the season when it out-rebounded opponents. The Flyers proved how valuable their depth was as well, the UD bench outscoring Duquesne’s 43-8. UD tallied seven dunks in the A-10 bout, bringing its total to 61 this season in just 18 games, tying a Dayton single-season record set by the 2003-04 squad that put up those same numbers in 33 contests.

Game #19

dayton 63 George washington 61 JANUARY 22, 2009 • CHARLES E. SMITH CENTER • WASHINGTON, D.C. Marcus Johnson scored six of his team-high 17 points in the final two minutes of play to help the Dayton Flyers rally for a 63-61 victory over the George Washington Colonials. Rob Lowery added eight points, eight rebounds and six assists off the bench, while Chris Wright added 13 points and five boards as the Flyers improved to 17-2 overall and 3-1 in the Atlantic 10. The Flyer rally all started when Marcus Johnson answered by sinking a three to pull Dayton within 60-57 with 2:05 to go. Wright then drove the lane, hit the shot, got fouled and sank a free throw to tie the contest at 60-60. Before the Flyers were to inbound the ball with 21 seconds to go, GW had a technical foul called against them for having six men on the court. Marcus Johnson hit both free throws to give the Flyers a one-point advantage. When UD did inbound the ball, the Colonials fouled Marcus Johnson immediately forcing the one-and-one attempt. Johnson hit the first, but missed the second. The Colonials had two potential shots to win only to come up short and allow Dayton to pick up its third win in a row. Other contributors for the Flyers included Chris Johnson with eight points and four rebounds, Warren dishing out six assists and Charles Little adding nine points, three rebounds and three assists.
