Chairman’s Welcome Dear Visitor, Welcome to the 2015 Tetbury Classic Car Show. We hope that you are as pleased as we are with our new location here at Sir William Romney’s School. This is my first year as Chairman, having taken over from John Billington who started the show with our band of helpers in 2013. The show has grown in size since our first event, but we still aim to do two things as well as we can; to raise as much money as possible for our nominated local charities, and to provide a great family day out with an eclectic selection of classic cars in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. I first met John on the forecourt of the petrol station of Tesco’s whilst I was filling up my Morgan 4/4. He asked me if I was willing to help with running a classic car show in town and without thinking twice I said yes. Maybe I should have heeded my mother’s advice about talking to strangers! John has semi-retired from running the show as he has moved “up north”, but he has still found the time to organise a magnificent selection of trade stands for 2015. Tetbury Audi are still our main sponsor, and we are very pleased to work with them for the third year running.

llsorts is a busy member-led charity that supports families who have children with disabilities or additional needs. We have a membership of over 150 families and two special schools, and we provide a wide range of services locally, across the Stroud District. These include two youth clubs, a year-round programme of activities and outings for the whole family, parent/carer groups, a siblings group, a specialist toy and equipment library, inclusive sports sessions and information and training. You can find out much more about what we do on our website, or follow us on Facebook and Twitter. We are a small charity that achieves a lot with the funds we raise. We are always developing new services as needs arise. The proceeds from this event and your donation will be very gratefully received and will be used directly to support children with disabilities and additional needs. Allsorts would like to thank the Tetbury Classic Car Show for continuing its fantastic efforts to raise funds for our work and for its continued support. www.allsortsglos.org.uk Telephone: 07582 378422 Email: info@allsortsglos.org.uk, Facebook and Twitter ‘Allsorts Gloucestershire’

The show would not run without the classic car owners who have kindly brought their pride and joys to Tetbury today, and we are extremely grateful to them. Please take the opportunity to seek out and appreciate some of the rarer cars - the show is already renowned for the gems it attracts each year. Allsorts, one of our main charities we support will be here today and when you visit their stand you will appreciate why we go to so much effort to raise money for the young people with physical and learning difficulties that they support. Helping run the show today are Tetbury Lions and the PTFA from SWR- without their help we could not staff the event, so please say hello and thank you to them. Some of the students from SWR will be running the silent auction for us - details of the lots and a bid slip are in this programme. There are some superb prizes to be had, but only if you fill in the form now and hand it to our keen volunteers on the auction stand by the bar and food area. The Royal Oak is providing the superb bar and Pimm’s stall. They are enthusiastic supporters of the car show and have kindly helped us with marketing, entertainment and much needed refreshment during our planning meetings. Thank you Kate and Chris! Running the car show is not a one man event, and I am indebted to the car show committee - Tim Peacock, Richard Smith, John Billington, Keith Leaver and Stephen Hirst for their hard work, help, humour and advice. The excellent programme you are reading has been produced by Richard - he will not be here today as he assures me he is on holiday - however if you see a black Triumph driven by a man in disguise you will know that he has successfully avoided the clear-up operation after the show closes! John Bevan Chairman, Tetbury Classic Car Show

The PTFA was formed in the Summer of 2013 and all parents of students at the school are automatically members. We would be very keen to hear from you with any ideas you may have, or help you can offer. Involvement can be as little or as much as you wish and you do not need to attend regular meetings. Meetings are informal and are held on the second Tuesday of the month at The Old Lodge, Minchinhampton. Just turn up or contact one of us so we know to expect you. Please contact Catherine Chidley for further details. ALL WELCOME. We are currently raising money for a new kiln for the Art Department. All members of the committee can be contacted via ptfa@swr. gloucs.sch.uk

MGB GT V8

I

n last year’s programme I whined on piteously about a car I was silly enough to sell a few years back – a Jaguar V12 E-type. This year (apologies in advance) – I’ll bemoan the loss of another car I owned in the 1990’s, an MGB GT V8. You see, when in 1985 my Triumph Spitfire finally spat out its dummy and ground to a halt on the A46 with yet another terminal engine failure, I finally realised it was time to invest some time and money in it, if it was going to continue its life. That decision led me into buying the first of a series of cars I acquired “for the mean time”, the first of which was an “It’s supposed-to-be Inca yellow” MGB GT. I admit, I liked the car very much, even though as a Triumph fan I probably wasn’t supposed to – and I learned about several distinctly MGB traits, such as the famous shorting-out of the gearlever overdriveswitch problem, sometimes leading to the car catching fire. Mine did not. It really was a VERY non-factory eye-watering yellow, though, and also really quite slow (no, that’s not necessarily a characteristic of Abingdon’s finest, I know), so I moved it on, PX’ing it against a rubber-bumper 1976 “P” registered MGB GT V8 in black. To address a myth – the MGB GT V8’s don’t have particularly heavy steering. Honest. There’s very little to choose in nose-weight between the 1800’s and the V8 engine’d cars and indeed, they handle just fine. The bare V8 actually weighs 40lb less than the four cylinder – so there! As you may know the V8 cars aren’t too common and confined to the GT body only, in factory form, so there aren’t any “factory” convertibles. This one had the full-length factory Webasto sun roof, so I was able to talk my wind-in-your-hair fan of a wife into letting me buy it – and it didn’t want for much either, except that it was a bit shabby-chic and a previous owner had obviously decided that the factory black Dunlop wheels would look better re-painted in red enamel. (Ye Gods.) I took them “back to black” very quickly, as soon as I got it home. It did want for something in the way of reliability though, since it kept stopping dead – and once very nearly seriously dead, in fact, since on the very same stretch of the A46 where I killed the Spitfire it tried to kill me, suffering complete engine failure during an overtaking manoeuvre. Yikes. I figured out that in colder weather it would perform well, with the soundtrack and performance levels one might expect from

a small car fitted with the Buick-derived 3,500cc V8 in 137bhp form. Fabulous. In hot weather, though, it would conk out quite unexpectedly, only to start up again minutes lately with no complaints at all. My wife didn’t want to drive it - I soldiered on, trying to diagnose it. I replaced the fuel pump and fitted a transparent fuel filter so that I could leap out to investigate the petrol delivery when it died, traffic permitting. I found no problem there; it stopped with a nice full fuel line. I changed all the ignition wiring and the leads – and then began to suspect the after-market “Lumenition” might be at fault. Hmm. As you may know Lucas Electronic Ignition units were the go-to add on for the classic car motorist for many years, and something of a must-have, indeed. Perhaps they still are? I doubt it. I expect we’ve all gone “123” or something else, but I digress. The MG had this aftermarket system fitted and so I set about trouble-shooting it, very expensively, by replacing each component in turn. At this remove I can’t think why I chose this approach instead of pulling the whole lot off and replacing the distributor, but I can only say that “You live and learn!” Having sought advice and having been repeatedly assured by Lucas themselves that it could not possibly be “their” system at fault – and that in particular a problem with the distributor rotor blade and “magic eye” was unheard of, I replaced that bit last. Lucas at the time worked – no doubt in complete darkness – out of a Coventry factory which I once broke down right outside of, as my Ford Capri suffered an electrical fire. But that’s another story. Needless to say it was of course this pretty damn un-magical “magic eye” component which was at fault, despite assurances to the contrary, and which, nestling as it was right between the two banks of the V8, used to get a bit hot and sweaty in the darkness and go into a swoon. Fixed, the car was a dream to drive and went like stink. Only the evil demon of ambition, this time to gain a chromebumper version, moved me to sell it, part-exchanging it against an earlier 1974 car, also in black. Silly me. And that one’s another story, too. Where is it now, my first MG BGT V8? Well, the vehicle enquiry service of the DVLA show it as untaxed since 2006 I’m afraid, so it’s quite probably gone on to the great automotive hereafter. I miss it!

1935 MG PB Midget Registration: BOK 244 - Chassis number 0522

What a gem.

N

ot only did I find the model I was looking for through all my research when I went out to buy this car, I also became the third owner from new, complete with all matching numbers and a complete chassis file of references. Lucky, lucky me! I used the MG Car Club Triple M register for reference and research (the Triple M register encompasses the three pre-war models built between 1929 and 1936, Midget, Magna and Magnette). I concentrated on the P Type Midget, of which the PB two-seater was comprised of 408 ever produced. The P Type Midget was never intended to be a track car, unlike it’s predecessors the C Type Montlhéry Midget and J4’s which were true racing cars with racing specifications and of course the highly successful K3 Magnette. As a matter of interest, MG dominated the track and trials circuits throughout the 1930’s and more races were won by MG sports cars than any other single marque of car. So popular were they that these cars were often seen at race paddocks and sought after by many RAF pilots of the day, one of whom would be Douglas Bader. How he ever managed to drive this car with its ‘crash’ gearbox using two artificial legs is a mystery, but he was often seen at Kenley Aerodrome in his J2 Midget. My car, B0522 - referred to as ‘Bertie’ - was purchased in Birmingham by its first owner Flight Lieutenant Day who was killed, tragically, in 1944. I purchased the car in December 1997, not really knowing its significance, but since I promptly registered ownership with the Triple M Club I soon had a lovely letter in return, saying that my car was

built on the 19th October 1935 alongside the famous trials cars of the period, the ‘Cream Crackers’. The ‘Cream Crackers’ were very successful as a trials team in the 1930’s and sported the uprated PB engine with supercharging. These cars dominated the trials circuits. PB0521 - possibly the most famous of the team and raced by May and Toulmin in many trials - was built not only on the same day as my car, but was actually the one built before mine. When I purchased the car we were living in Cobham, not far from the Brooklands Race Circuit, and I would be a frequent visitor with ’Bertie’ most weekends. The Regency run would set off from there in May down to Brighton, finishing up at the Madera Drive on the Brighton sea front - and we would book this every year and journey down with some friends in their pre-war MG’s. It was always a frantic exercise to get your car ready to set off with the build-up to the Regency run and on one particular year ‘Bertie’ let me down with a failed starter motor. To my rescue came Peter Green, then the chairman of the Triple M Club, who happens to own the Cream Cracker team car PB0533. To my amazement he was kind enough to let me use the car for the run. Not surprisingly, it performed very well and was much admired by my fellow Triple M-er’s at Brighton when we completed the run. They appreciated the significance of the vehicle. Can you imagine my delight at not only driving a Cream Cracker with its historical significance but also being able to park it in the same garage as ‘Bertie’ - built on the same day - 75 years after they were produced? Heady stuff! Unlike its predecessors, the MG P Type’s were never really selected as race cars, but the factory decided to put together a Ladies team for the Le Mans 24 within the one litre class. The team of three cars was put together by Captain Eyston and were affectionately named ‘The Dancing Daughters’. They supposedly came off the production line as production models, but if you were to go through the specifications it’s quite obvious that they never were. They performed faultlessly and finished the endurance race. As a matter of interest, number 56 Registration number JB 6156 is currently on the market, but you may need to speak to your friendly Bank manager to purchase it. It is expected to raise in excess of £120,000…

Getting there in the end!

I

t is fair to say that the first few years of my Volkswagen ownership were a challenge. It started in 2003 following an idle conversation with a friend during which I’d mentioned that I’d always fancied a camper van. “I’ve got a mate who wants to sell his, why don’t you go and look at it?” was the response.

money to deal with the many cosmetic challenges, so the van I finally drove to the MOT station actually looking worse than ever. It did pass though, and even more surprisingly, with the brakes sorted and steering box adjusted it really wasn’t that bad to drive. I was expecting a painfully slow, sloppy driving experience. It was slow, undoubtedly, but that didn’t seem to matter. It was fun!

I hate it when people call your bluff.

Several enjoyable camping trips followed during that summer, and it was even pressed into daily use driving to and from work. The same internet forum users who assured me that a clutch change was an easy task also promised that the VW heating system was more than up to the job ‘if properly set up’.

So there I was, looking at a hulk; a 1972 VW Camper that had been sitting on someone’s drive for two years, following a clutch failure. It was resplendent in a faded murky blue on one side and grey primer on the other - the bottom six inches of the van exhibiting impressive rust holes. And the engine wouldn’t start. However, if I was willing to pay £500 the van was mine, so I agreed, on the proviso that I could hear it running. As I parked outside the vendor’s house later that afternoon I heard the unmistakable clatter of an air cooled engine and realised that I’d just bought a very rusty, very knackered Volkswagen. Just how bad it was became apparent when I tried to push it down the drive (no clutch, remember) - and my hands went straight through the front panel, revealing it to be made up of expanded foam, skilfully crafted into shape. I’d previously noted how pleasingly rust-free that particular panel was. Now I knew why! During the tow home, I narrowly missed careering into the back of my friends Range Rover, as I discovered that the brake master cylinder was past its best. And the steering? Well at least the steering wheel did appear to be attached to the front wheels, but by a piece of bungee cord, judging by the feel of things. First job was to get the van moving and MoT’d. Despite all assurances to the contrary, the clutch was a pig of a job. I began to realise that the front of a vehicle really is the best place to put an engine, not least because you can access it from above, avoiding the need to grovel on your knees with your head and upper torso in a very oily version of the black hole of Calcutta. And then came the welding.

sides of all the breakdowns however, was that slowly I had replaced all of the ancillaries as they failed, so not only did I have a fresh engine, but just about everything bolted to it was also new. And you know what? Nine years and 20,000 miles later I haven’t been towed home since. I am convinced this is due to the fact that apart from electronic ignition and an alternator, the van is pretty much as Volkswagen intended - and VW really did know what they were doing.

Yet again, they lied. Winter mornings were hell, trying to scrape the ice off the inside of the windscreen, battling carburetor icing issues of epic proportion, and finally turning up to work shivering. And yes, reliability was an issue. Once, the accelerator pedal dropped off on a busy roundabout in the centre of Bristol during rush hour. Another memorable moment was when one of the rocker covers fell off on the M5, emptying the engine of oil in no time at all, over the hapless car behind me. Then there was the time the wiring caught fire, again on the M5, and the time the dynamo pulley disintegrated in spectacular fashion. The list of VW Camper experiences went on. Every Monday morning my work colleagues used to wait in eager anticipation to find out where I’d broken down this weekend. One year - 2006 I think - I got towed home ten times in eight months. The final straw was when a piston melted due to a cracked cylinder head. That was it! I had to either sell the van or to get the engine rebuilt, properly. Surprisingly, despite all the hassle I really was quite fond of the thing, so I did what I should have done right at the beginning and spent a decent amount of cash on the engine. It was in such a state that the only re-usable components were the camshaft and push rods. One of the plus

In the meantime the van has been treated new outer panels, including a new front panel to replace all that expanded foam, and a re-spray. I can honestly say that no other vehicle has improved my welding skills more. I think that the roof is the only panel left untouched by my welding torch, but in truth even that is showing signs of rust bubbling around the gutters… I don’t use the van every day now, thankfully. I sorted the carb icing issues, but I’ve never got the heaters to work properly, so it has been relegated to use for camping trips to the coast in the summer, and to less glamorous trips to the tip loaded up with rubbish in the winter. I still enjoy driving it immensely especially on a B road when I’m not in a rush - where with hardly any power, I do get there in the end. A bit like I did with the whole van, really. Note: For any air-cooled VW enthusiasts/ anoraks who may be reading, my van is a 1600cc April 1972 Crossover Microbus, originally in Pastel White over Niagara Blue and fitted with a Devon Moonraker interior.

The sills, floors, chassis rails and jacking points were all replaced, making a mockery of my plan to have all the welding completed in a couple of weekends. I didn’t have the time or
