Chairman’s Welcome

O

n behalf of the organising team I should like to welcome everyone to the second Tetbury Classic Car Show. Just as last year, many thanks are due to the exhibitors who have come in great numbers to support the event, some from quite far afield. They’ve paid us a tremendous compliment. It’s nice to see old friends here again this year and also to welcome new people and new vehicles. I think you will agree that the marvellous variety of classics on show today is a great tribute to their owners, who can be justifiably proud. I should also like to thank our sponsors and advertisers, of course. Our main event sponsor is again Tetbury Audi who have supported us since the start; it’s very much appreciated. Our other sponsors are listed here in the programme and all have come with a marvellous display of either their vehicles or their wares. Do go and have a look! A good deal can be struck today. As usual, we’re supporting two very worthy causes: The Dolphin Hall Development Fund - bringing our public facility up-to-date to answer the needs of the people of Tetbury, and the Stroudbased charity ALLSORTS who are with us today. Do go and say hello and see what they do! Their excellent work for disabled children cannot be over-emphasised. Have a look at their website www.allsortsglos. org.uk and you will quickly realise why we are so very happy to support them again here today. Lastly, a big thank-you to all those people who have worked so hard to make today a success; the Organising Team, the staff of the “People’s Pod” and their friends (they are themselves a very worthy cause) – Jesse Smith and their “Big Pans”, the Tetbury Lions, the ladies of the Tetbury WI, the Recreation Ground Committee and the usual custodians of the ground, the football, rugby and cricket clubs. And, of course to you, the paying visitor, thank you for your support. I hope you enjoy your time here today and will want to come back next year! Look out for the 2015 event date and details on our 2015 web site and in the Tetbury Advertiser. John Billington On behalf of the Organising Team

llsorts is a busy member-led charity that supports families who have children with disabilities or additional needs. We have a membership of over 150 families and two special schools, and we provide a wide range of services locally, across the Stroud District. These include two youth clubs, a year-round programme of activities and outings for the whole family, parent/carer groups, a siblings group, a specialist toy and equipment library, inclusive sports sessions and information and training. You can find out much more about what we do on our website, or follow us on Facebook and Twitter. We are a small charity that achieves a lot with the funds we raise. We are always developing new services as needs arise. The proceeds from this event and your donation will be very gratefully received and will be used directly to support children with disabilities and additional needs. Allsorts would like to thank the Tetbury Classic Car Show for continuing its fantastic efforts to raise funds for our work and for its continued support. www.allsortsglos.org.uk Telephone: 07582 378422 Email: info@allsortsglos.org.uk, Facebook and Twitter ‘Allsorts Gloucestershire’

Dolphins Hall Regeneration

T

etbury’s Dolphins Hall provides the core space for an amazing variety of activities and interests from playgroups to dance classes, from Polling Station during elections to the regular Blood Donor sessions. Insured for 120 guests, the Hall also provides an excellent family party and celebration venue. It’s a fundamental ingredient in many of the local fund-raising activities and social events, hosting film screenings, amateur dramatics, dances, race nights, charity lunches and much, much more. However, this Hall was built before the need to protect the environment became a factor in construction and before issues such as good insulation, effective heating systems and flexible use of space became important; the new hall will address all these issues. The Dolphins New Build Appeal has been set up to raise the funding to build and equip a completely new Hall, with extra facilities such as flexibly-sized meeting rooms, an updated kitchen and restrooms, and other upgrades which will offer a modern, upgraded service to families, clubs and organisations needing social space. Also planned are changing and social facilities for sports clubs. The first tranche of funds was used to commission architects to prepare initial plans from the brief and a public presentation of these has been held already – more details are available from the website, but of course the drive to raise funds continues. Many thanks are due for the generosity of all contributors. http://www.dolphinshalltetbury.co.uk/ Telephone: 01666 504670 Email: contact@dolphinshalltetbury.co.uk

Last Years Winners Well classic car ownership isn’t really about who or what is “best” or indeed about “winning”, we know. Every vehicle at the show has unique attributes, like its own personality - things which keep the owners treating it so well. Nevertheless, it’s nice to honour them and their owners! Last year the applause was for: Best Car in Show: Humber Super Snipe FRW 312C. Ray Hill Best Sports Car: Austin Healey 3000 NWJ 381D. Peter Pender Best Motorcycle: Racing Velocette. 583 YUM. Geraint Miles Best Club Stand: Cotswold Classic Car Club Best Commercial Vehicle: BMC Morris owned by Howard Tenens Ltd. entered by Brian Bates

1935 MG PB Midget , Registration: BOK 244, Chassis number 0522

ome background on the model: One of the most sought-after of all the small cam MGs, the PB was almost identical to its PA predecessor but can be identified by several visual differences, like the slatted radiator grill and revised dashboard layout. However, the major difference is under the bonnet.

The ‘overhead’ cam shaft engine which was very advanced for its time was uprated to compete with the Singer 9 at Le Mans of that year and with an improved gear ratio the significances were noticed both on- and off-track. Sadly, production ceased after 526 were built, so PB-522 is one of only 408 in two-seater configuration, built between 19356 chassis PB-251 to PB-0776. When the MG car Company was bought back in late 1936 by the Morris Group from Lord Nuffield, it discontinued the racing/trials division and it also spelled the end of ‘true’ MGs, designed and built in Abingdon. By the way - why did so many pre-war MGs start with the chassis number 251? That was the factory telephone number. As you may imagine, I did an enormous amount of research before I set off to purchase a pre-war MG in 1997. Let’s not forget, these cars are now almost eighty years old, thus most have been through several owners. My heart was set on this particular model after reading up on the subject; I went to see several pre-war MG’s, advertised through various clubs. BOK 244 or “Bertie” as I call him (on good days), was the forth example. I replied to the advert assuming that I would be speaking to a man but to my surprise a lady answered the ‘phone and quite assertively saying ‘It’s my car, it belonged to my late husband and not only that, it was the deluxe model’. I was quite taken aback!

I expressed my concern in travelling all the way from Surrey and also, quite impertinently, asked if the car was as immaculate as described in the advertisement. I wanted to view the car on the following Sunday, but was advised that that was not the most appropriate day to come, as the lady owner would be attending church with her mother, both morning and evening. We arranged a weekday, then - and I played hooky from work to view the car. When I arrived in East Dereham, the door was answered by the lady who I’d spoken to on the ‘phone -Madeline Disney - who I later found out on looking through the documents of the car, was the second owner from new. The first owner was Flight Lt. Day who tragically was killed in 1944 and according to Mrs Disney it was then stored in a barn until about 1962 when they purchased the car. After viewing all the numerous documents and chassis files I realised that I had found a bit of a gem, with all matching serial numbers. The next move, obviously, was to view the car, so we went from the conservatory to her heated garage. The car was under a wonderful old bedspread. We tried to start it under its own steam, but to no avail. We found later that the battery was completely flat, so we jumped it from my company car and to my surprise it started first time! I took the car for a spin in the wilds of Norfolk then returned to negotiate the price. I had noticed that there were several things wrong such as incorrect road wheels from a later model, the wrong steering wheel and wrong upholstery, but knew all these could be sourced. To my surprise a large brown cardboard box appeared with a collection of spares and it contained a steering wheel which I later found out to be a much sort after optional extra. (I have subsequently been offered £700 for this original piece as the standard steering wheel would be a three-spoke version.) Later during my research I found that the deluxe model had the full instrumentation on the dash such as the oil and water temperature gauges and also a clock, a “quick release” radiator cap and water pump. “Bertie” is now as originally built when it left the factory on the 19th October 1935, the same day as the three PB’s “Cream Cracker”’ trials-team cars. Finished with Cerulean blue upholstery and the side-laced road wheels, BOK 244 when new was £222.0s.0d. Subsequently unsold stocks of PAs were then offered at the reduced price of £199.10s “to clear”. The production run of ‘P’ Types and variants, totalled 2,500 ending in 1936. The successor in 1936 was the MG TA which sported the MPJG overhead valve units from the Wolsey 10 and hydraulic brakes; never a “proper” MG!

cars in the Midwest’. Determined to stop on my return, I noted the intersection and hoped I would have time. When I did, what greeted me were ten barns full of mainly US Classic cars from 1910 onwards, and my first view of 50 or more delightfully beautiful late 1930’s and early 1940’s designs from various makers.

My business took me frequently to the United States, and visiting a new Customer, I passed on the freeway a large sign advertising ‘The biggest stock of classic

There were Buick’s, Pontiac’s, Chevrolet’s, Mercury’s, Ford’s and Packard’s, all displaying the characteristic curvaceous art-deco styling that gives a soft, floozy

elegance, so in keeping with the pre war era. Prices did not seem too high for tidy models and on further research I found that these cars were reasonably modern in terms of design and operation. I was tempted, but passed the opportunity by on this occasion. Fast forward a couple of years, and on a trip to the West Coast, I came across a chance to buy a real beauty in the form of a 1946 Packard. This car was from a 1938 design, but was made just post-war before Packard’s introduced their ‘new styling’ for the post-war tastes. This was a throwback to the pre-war affluence. To give the car its full title, it is a 1946 Packard Custom Super Clipper 8 Touring Sedan, series 2106; you can almost hear Glenn Miller playing from the radio (well, you could if it worked!). A reasonable price was agreed after a thorough independent inspection, and a shipping agency hired to get it home and registered here. After some delays my beautiful beast, all red and with whitewalled tyres, arrived in October last year - and great fun she is too. The trouble is I have no undercover place for her and do not have the time to give her the care necessary, so I am seeking a Classic Car enthusiast who would like to take care of my Packard as its “minder”. Come and view the car and talk to me here at the show or email me at peter@ avening.eclipse.co.uk

Lessons Learned !

I

still have the 1972 Triumph Spitfire I bought as a 19-year-old. I bought it in 1979 when my bank manager, having reminded me of the responsibilities of incurring debt and that sports cars were “inherently dangerous”, gave me my first loan. Against his sage advice, I immediately went out and bought a French Blue Spitfire 1300 Mk IV “in reasonable condition” with after-market air horns fitted. Loud and distinctly unsociable, they clinched the deal. I arranged to collect it when funds cleared, two days later. Driving back into Tetbury a car pulled out in front of me and I pressed the horn firmly, to be greeted with silence. What?! I checked under the bonnet and the air horns had been removed. I later found the spare wheel gone from the boot, too, the cover still in place, sitting on a bald tyre. Lesson 1: Caveat Emptor! Spitfire engines can be fragile, so I rebuilt it. I ran it in carefully for 500 miles and then let rip. Two miles of ripping later, it seized solid when a piece of piston ring found its way right along the crankshaft journals. Goodbye engine. Lesson 2: Check the piston ring gap. I replaced the engine with something smoky from the scrap yard – something I ended up doing regularly, since I had a heavy right foot and very little money. In fact I used up replacement Herald, Toledo and Spitfire units with impunity, becoming very good at judging engine life expectancy by start-up rattle. None lasted long… Lesson 3: Check the oil, drive carefully. Eventually the car failed an MOT, since it was a colander - and several years passed. I bought a Capri (everyone did!) Then in 1985 I gave the body to Ron to get it together and to spray it in black for me. The chassis I kept for myself, so I could play “wire-brush-and-Hammerite”. I found a GT6 bonnet too, since I had an idea I’d change the power plant at some time and it made it look a bit more “E - type”. Lesson 4: Bodywork is expensive.

Lesson 7: Listen to your wife. And then the engine blew up. I acquired a straight six from a GT6 for it, but soon realised the swap wasn’t trivial. Damn! And then we fast-forward through company cars, house moves, and the acquisition of several other classics. From 1991 until the noughties, the Spitfire languished. I bought an MGB. Sacrilege! Lesson 8: If you’re not going to use it – sell it. It wasn’t until 2002 that the Spitfire was again dragged into the light and I started replacing things. Cosmetically it was still reasonable. Mechanically, it was rather sad. Everything rubber had deteriorated completely, the trunnions had seized solid and even the bright yellow Spax shock absorbers had turned a rusty brown. I spent three years of wrestling with it when time allowed and then one fateful evening I dropped a bell-housing bolt straight into the aperture for the clutch actuating fork. I pushed the car into a corner for another year… Lesson 9: Use it or lose it – and that applies to mechanical aptitude, too.

I then solicited the help of a renowned Triumph specialist from Wotton - and with lots and lots of his help it attained an MOT again, just about 20 years since its last lay-up. At that time there was still plenty to do, replacing the interior, freeing off the rear suspension and acquiring “bling”. That process is ongoing, of course. Lesson 10 –The fun never ends! Now? Well, it has a frustrating oil leak, the seats are back to Spitfire (there was even less room in it with MX5 ones), the expensive discs pulsed terribly so I changed them, it failed its last MOT on a track rod end (the new ones are made out of plasticine and cigarette ends) it’s too small for me and I can’t get out of it easily because I’ve got a grouchy knee. Is it “my pride and joy” as someone said recently? Well, yes. Last Lesson – One day everyone grows up. In my case, not yet.

Lesson 5: If you want an E-type, save up. After use as a second car and then having rested for several years, marriage happened. The Spitfire was resurrected - inevitably with another engine and gearbox – this time from a late Spitfire 1500. My wife was then its careful and caring custodian and far kinder to the car than I’ve ever been. She mentioned that the seat squab was absorbing water one day; I ignored her until (much later) driving it for myself. Ick! Lesson 6: Use more windscreen sealant.

I always had an E-type !

W

hen I was a very small boy I had a Carmen Red E-type Mk 1, car number 120 - a coupe and one of the few Dinky toys which performed and handled really well on linoleum. When I was slightly older, my bath time toy was a Signal Red-type series one-and-a-half. It was a Scalecraft “snap together” model with a plastic body and movable front wheels, just right for shooting around the end of the bath “wall-of-death” style. I found that If I propped the plug chain out of the way over the hot tap, the little red roadster would do an almost perfect half-circuit and come back, before gravity took over and it dived into the soap bubbles. Other lads had sailing ships, or perhaps tugs. I always had an E-type. Years later, I had an after-school job working on a garage forecourt. It wasn’t self-service in those days - if you wanted petrol one of us would dart out of the office and fill up your car for you. We’d also check the oil and water if required, and clean the windscreen. Good old-fashioned service.

idiots in equal measure. Why do E-types do that? I had great chats about it (suddenly it seemed everyone used to own one and had a story about it) and I also had to persuade people that pulling on the petrol flap wasn’t a good idea. I also found drivers on the other side of the road would unexpectedly veer toward me; they were so compelled to look at it they forgot to steer, creating an interesting new hazard to deal with. I was abused and applauded in equal measure at traffic lights and once, even, chased all the way up the lane where I live by a smitten schoolgirl (it must have been the car, right?) anxious to get a closer view. I teased her by driving slowly. Great. I owned the car for a little over five years; I fulfilled my boyhood dreams. Do I regret selling it, although it cost a small fortune to run and repair, suffered

from a seemingly-unfixable crankshaft oil leak since the day I got it, couldn’t safely be parked anywhere (I once came out of a restaurant to find a drunken gentleman lying on the bonnet kissing it) and even though it mis-fired terribly on anything but the purest of 4-star? You bet I do. It’s still the one car I wish I’d kept. At this very event last year I found myself walking up to a gentleman who was standing next to his Signal Red E-Type Series 3 and saying “I used to have one of these!” He looked at me and tried to judge, I think, my level of idiocy…

At the time I had a passion for 3-cylinder Kawasaki H2 750’s. It was unshakable until a gentleman drove in behind the wheel of his Signal Red E-type Series 3. He confidently told me to “fill it up”. It was the 70’s and petrol was briefly being rationed at the time, to regular customers only. I had a short internal debate. Was I going to challenge him? Ask him was he a regular customer? Earlier in the week Prince Charles’ security men wouldn’t let me fuel his DB6 in case I damaged it – so it wasn’t a long debate; this car I was going to fill! When I collected the money I somehow felt compelled to ask, “Is it expensive, driving one of these in a recession?” He paid me in cash – of course – and replied, “Recession? What recession?” It was inevitable then, really. At the end of the 90’s when I found I suddenly had a little more money than usual, all in one place, I took the entirely sensible decision to buy a Series 3 manual in Signal Red, with black leather interior. Almost immediately, I found the car attracted charming people and complete

23 years with a Triumph Vitesse

A

life-long interest in cars, coupled with an inclination to take anything mechanical apart ‘just to see how it works’, meant that on passing my driving test I needed something to tinker with, something interesting and preferably something fast. A trip in a Triumph Herald 13/60 convertible showed me what fun open-top motoring could be. The only downside was that the Herald could not hold its own in the performance stakes against my friends Capri’s, Golf ’s and the like. If I was going to stand at least a chance of keeping up with my mates, it was going to have to be a Vitesse rather than the Herald.

The body was removed to repair the chassis, all mechanical components were checked and repaired or replaced as necessary, and a re-spray was carried out, this time “under cover”. The phrase ‘Do it once, do it right’ could never have been more aptly used than when referring to this particular classic car restoration - and over the last nine years the car has provided reliable service (not one breakdown!) and the rust has not reappeared. It was even trusted as transport for the bridesmaids to our wedding.

So finally, 23 years on, I own the car I thought I was buying back in 1991. I still love the way it looks and enjoy driving it, which after all is what owning a classic is all about. And there will be no need to carry out a fourth restoration any time soon - although, sometimes, I find myself looking at the car and thinking “If I took it all apart again, I could get those panel gaps just a little bit better….. and while I was at it, a respray would freshen things up a bit…”

In March 1991 I spotted a white Mk2 convertible with overdrive in Autotrader and soon after I went to view it, clutching a list of checks to make when buying such a car. The vendor started the car up and as the twin exhausts snarled, the check list was forgotten and I was sold. As was the car. Over the next few years the car broke down repeatedly, failed countless MoT’s, caught on fire, leaked spectacularly every time it rained, and showed itself to be part steel, part rust and part filler in roughly equal amounts. Both of us soldiered on, until during a rare period of reliability the car was involved in an accident, resulting in the most obvious rust being repaired at the same time as the accident damage. The car then continued to be used for another seven years - and despite only being taken out in the summer months, rust reappeared all over it. Consequently, I couldn’t resist taking it apart again to attend to the problems, once more. This time I did the work myself, carrying out the welding in a very cramped single garage, rebuilding the engine in my dining room, and much to my neighbours delight, carrying out the re-spray on my drive. Afterward I continued to enjoy the car, one summer even driving it down through France to Monaco and back. However the dreaded rust just kept on appearing, albeit in previously un-repaired areas. So finally, I actually did the decent thing and restored the car properly.

Can you drive a classic car to and from race meetings?

I

s it possible to drive a classic car to and from a circuit race? In the 1960’s and 1970’s a lot of club racers drove their pride and joy to and from the racetrack, so surely it would be possible now? There are many arguments for doing so, and anyway, my wife wouldn’t let me buy a trailer! I compete in a red Morgan 4/4 which you will see parked here today, having survived its last race at the Bentley Drivers’ Club meeting at Silverstone in August.

Driving your car to a race has undeniable downsides

Driving home in the rain in an open car with a four hour drive ahead of you in the dark springs to mind, but most racers who bring their classic car on a trailer will immediately say “What if you have an off ?” I would argue that you are less likely to, if at the back of your mind you know you have

to drive the car home! Although I re-assure myself that if I did, someone from the Morgan community would put my car on a trailer and give me a lift back…. In terms of competitiveness, the main downside is that having this knowledge at the back of your mind means you will drive more slowly. Some people thinking that bringing your car on a trailer is worth several seconds a lap. Nursing a poorly car home can also be stressful, although on a long journey back from Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire, where mechanical woes meant that I could only come back at a maximum of 60 milesper-hour, seeing a Lancaster overhead put my problems into perspective., After all, if bomber pilots could make it back from Berlin on 2 engines and half a tail, surely getting my car home couldn’t be so difficult? Sometimes mechanical maladies can make for a challenge- having driven home from Silverstone without any gears due to a snapped clutch cable became an interesting mental challenge! At the end of a long day with an early start, I often look wistfully at my fellow drivers as they drive their cars up onto a trailer, lash it down and leap gracefully into a warm

modern estate for a comfortable drive home listening to the radio, and guided round any traffic jams by Sat-Nav. Meanwhile I am still putting my car back together and frantically packing in race kit, clothes, tent and sleeping bags. So if there are many downsides, what are the positives? Well, since I drive my race car on the road all the time on the same tyres I race with, I know how my car will handle under most situations (fantastically well in the dry, and moderately frightening in the wet!). On a lovely summers evening, after a successful day of racing, and still buzzing with adrenalin, there are few things as pleasant as driving home on the Fosseway in an open car passing through beautiful towns such as Stow-on- the- Wold and Moreton, with the engine running crisply on cool air and the sound of the race exhaust barking behind you.
