Intention behind studio research to devise an architectural typology or logic that would suggest a self sustaining ecosystem. The systematics commonly found in nature like the insectual nest typoloy an ant or termite colony. The work of this project intended to expose an architectural language that support a developable relationship between work and living serving a community of public and student occupants. Inherent in the project’s purpose was that it be an extension of USC’s campus to provide additional research facilities while still embedding into the local community by providing amenities. The analysis of site conditions provided a framework in which to work within and establish a methodology that would allow for suitable adaptation to the existing site. Using existing typologies as reference for a futuristic, self-sustaining city. The development would ultimately lead to producing a largely master plan and a resolved building model for the microlofts that would be used by the students and public residing on the site.

“These super-colonies, found all over the world, are all of the same species of ant - the Argentine Ant. While it was believed until recently that each super-colony was unique, scientists from the University of Tokyo have found that the Argentine ants found in these super-colonies all have a specific hydrocarbon on their cuticles. While ants from different colonies will generally show signs of aggression towards one another, when put together, ants from these super-colonies actually get along very well. Even though they’re from opposite sides of the world, these ants act as though they’re from the same colony. As a result of this discovery, scientists now believe that the Argentine ants forming the super-colonies are actually all working together around the world, forming one worldwide mega-colony. We, as humans, have inadvertently transported the Argentine ants around the world, and they have created a completely peaceful population. Perhaps we should strive to be more like the ants.”

The development of the project suggests a plan that would allow for not only blur the line between architecture and nature, but between a research campus and living space for public. The housing modules’ transparent skin reduces the barrier between the occupant of the dwelling and nature. Use of plants and vegetation takes precedence in the planning of the site and the manmade hardscape carves away from the terrain. The fluid integration between research facilities and housing will allow for mixed use cross pollination. The project deploys an architectural master plan that instills the ideas of a self sustaining society and disrupts the separation between the university and the surrounding community.
