Fall 2014

Letter from the

Editor Hello DAMchic Readers! Have you ever been at a great concert, but the band has just walked off the stage and you’re left thinking, “Wait. Now what”? You know they aren’t coming back out and you instantly feel that sense of nostalgia for everything that just happened. The adrenaline is still pumping through your body and now you’re unsure if you should yell, dance, or just take a long nap. The experience of an amazing performance is exhausting, but what happens after the show? That’s exactly what this issue is all about – capturing that sense of “now what?” that comes after a big event. It’s dramatic, intense, and messy; a perfect follow up to The Metaphysical Issue. Every day, when we get dressed, we are performing. What we wear often says a lot about how we feel inside. What does your wardrobe say about your performance? Fall is my favorite season for many reasons. The weather cools and the leaves change colors, signaling a physical change in our environment. That sense of restlessness can inspire our wardrobes and transform our personal styles in a way that promotes internal change as well. Plus, Corvallis looks amazing in fall colors. If you’re looking for ways to revamp your wardrobe, check out our amazing Polyvore 2.

pages that showcase some of fall’s best and most wearable trends. Proving that style is prevalent among all age groups, check out our Street Style feature where we have a few fun guest stars showing off their unique wardrobes. As always, Health & Fitness makes working out way more fun with tips and suggestions for both low and high intensity workouts. On a personal note: Perhaps the reason I am so in love with this year’s fall theme is because it reminds me that this is my last issue as Editor in Chief for DAMchic Magazine. Now that my time here is done, I am also left with a taste of nostalgia as I let go and say goodbye to an organization that has given me so much during the past two years. With love and pride, I bid farewell to our loyal readers and my talented staff who I am lucky to call my friends. With great pride, I pass on the role of Editor in Chief to a trustworthy and talented woman: Eliot Frack. A special thank you to everyone who has made my past two years with DAMchic Magazine memorable, including current and past staff members, our faculty advisors, and you – our reader. DAMchic will always have a special place in my heart. Xx, Katie Sherpe

Fashion Week in

Cities

by Safia Khan

Fashion week has become one of the most prominent events in fashion industry. Twice every year, different countries around the world celebrate fashion like culture. I call it culture, because every culture has set traditions followed by rituals, in the fashion world this event too has a ritual of ‘week-long fashion fasts’. Major designers, models and celebrities take part in this runway of art. It’s how our favorite designers communicate with us. Each city is specific for the designers they showcase, and each designer keeps in mind the authenticity of the region they represent. Combined, they are a culture of their own, i.e. Fashion.

Paris

This year’s fashion week hosted in Paris featured well-known designers such as Chanel, Lanvin, Celine, Christian Dior and Saint Laurent and also up and coming designers namely Zadig & Voltaire, Masha Ma and Moncler Gamme Rouge. Known for putting up the most artistic and authentic fashion runway shows, this year Paris awed not just the fashion industry but also common fashion lovers, like myself. The credit for making Paris the hub for fashion innovation goes to none other than Chanel this year. The brand created an intricate grocery store for fall 2014, where every single item was labeled Chanel. This runway show was credited to be one of the most creative things fashion

industry has ever witnessed. Karl Largerfeld, who was the genius behind this idea is all about modern art. There were so many items in this grocery store that if I were to list every product it would be like doing an inventory of an actual supermarché. The fashion trends spotted during the show were probably even more relevant to this theme than one can imagine. From a bouclé pant suit to slouchy leather track pants and the cozy mannish overcoats, there was something for every type of girl. Not to mention delicate floral appliqués alongside edgy sneakers were also spotted. This was also one of the most talked about runway shows of the year not just because of its location but also the variety of trends it delivered.

14.

New York

Global

When we talk fashion week, New York almost always follows Paris in terms of creativity and variety. This year’s top runway shows were hosted by Marc Jacobs, Ralph Lauren and J. Mendel though there were many other’s like Calvin Klein and even Hernan Lander that brought extra ordinary work to the table. Marc Jacobs suspended clouds from the ceiling for his fall 2014 show, to which audiences looked up to in pensive ways. The whole theme had a dreamy feel to it, which was depictive of fashion world which is free and mystic. Color trends were neutral and very basic yet bold for this year, comprising of brown, pastel and white hues. Next in line for this year’s NY fashion week was Ralph Lauren. We all known if anyone knows how to do classic whites and blacks, it’s Ralph Lauren. Their trends bring sophistication that is distinct from any other designer. Personal favorites of this year were their all white monochrome trends that are perfect for fall and winter. J. Mendel is worth mentioning for this year, as they not only brought fierce to the list of trends but also glamor. The edgy colored fur pieces and pretty, jewel-toned dresses are all a girl needs for her winter blues.

London London is the epitome of originality and versatility. British designers bring to fashion industry a mix of modern history and art which is a little different from what Paris and New York runways have to offer. This year we noticed old designers like Tom Ford spicing it up and new designers like Peter Pilotto who became a big hit for their abstract prints, immediately after their collaboration with Target for spring 2014 in NY. Other amazing designers like Preen, Anya Hindmarch, Marques’Almeida, Antonio Berardi, JW Anderson, Christopher Kane, Burberry, Topshop Unique and Erdem blessed the runway with their unique imagination put in the form of colors and prints. Tom Ford this year opted for many extremes ranging from glitzy to muted glamor. Cuts were simple and straight and color theme went from black to white to vibrant reds. Some leopard print was also spotted. Peter Pilotto’s contribution to fashion industry is noteworthy, as never before have brand collaborations made such a hit. Their boxy patchwork and tech-y prints are very modern and futuristic. They could even be named masters of digital prints in today’s fashion but this type of work isn’t new in London, many other British designers have opted for Aztec prints. A lot of mixing of different colors and prints was spotted on their runway for spring 2014. Another very British designer who brings raw authenticity to the runway is Burberry. Personal favorite this year was their personalized monograms on their ponchos, perfect to keep you warm and chic.

15.

Milan

Global

Many of us understate Milan as a fashion hub when compared with Paris or New York, however, some of the best fashion trends spruce from Italy. Some of us may not have considered Italy to be our fashion destination, but many of us know Italian designers who have been wowing fashion industry for decades. This year’s designers who stole our fashion-filled hearts were Giorgio Armani, Prada, Salvatore Ferragamo, Fendi, Missoni, Dolce & Gabbana, Moschino, MSGM, Emilio Pucci, Etro, Versace, Roberto Cavalli and many more. Being a hat fanatic I was immediately captivated by Giorgio Armani’s elegant idea of putting together three girls on the runway together rocking the old style ‘big hats’ with pastel-y scarves wrapped around from below the neck to above the knees, pairing that with sparkly, strappy heels was the most perfect combination. There were a lot of watery blues and greens spotted in their runway, the ambiance was hazy which went perfectly with their trend theme. And unlike other times, this year Giorgio Armani was more about suits and loose pants then black and red dresses. In contrast Salvatore Ferragamo displayed a lot of neutrals –cream, white, navy and beige, however up-close the neutrals were highly detailed. Ferragamo’s neutrals this year were the most creative in my opinion, be it their sheer bomber jacket or cluster pleat dresses. The looks were both feminine and masculine perfect for a girl who likes to live on either end. When talking about fashion in Italy it’s hard not to mention designers like Dolce & Gabbana, as their fashion screams history and culture. This years was no different. The brand showcased art in the form of clothing by printing ancient Sicily on the spring dresses for 2014. The dresses were shaped loosely with belled sleeves, along with simple accessories. The main themes were prints of ancient ruins and rocky stones, along with bold colors on neutral prints. While this being the most intriguing trend of their runway show, there were also a lot of basic and lacey blacks. That totally shift their theme on ancient history and transformed the runway into platform of beauty and sex appeal. Dolce & Gabbana slammed the end of the show with ravishing models who came out as group, dressed in gold, looking like Sicilian goddesses.

Fashion weeks complexity and beauty cannot be summed up in a four page editorial, talented designers cannot to be talked about enough and the impact of their work in this industry cannot be treasured enough. Each city is distinct in the kind of designers they choose, the models they groom and the set up they use. Many developed and even undeveloped countries now host Fashion Weeks, which makes fashion more than just a matter of glamor and beauty. Fashion is culture.

LeDramatique Creating Drama in your Home This Fall

by Bridget Shelton

My favorite time of year is when the warm weather begins to fade and the crisp fall air fills my lungs. It is the season for layers; sweaters, jackets, scarves and boots; this is also true for your home. Warm blankets come out of storage, bedding becomes thicker, bake ware that was neglected during the summer are now back in regular rotation. As you’re storing your summer décor, this is the perfect time to update your home to this season’s current trend. Le Dramatique is full of drama; it combines feminine and masculine qualities for an elegant balance. Look for rich textures and lush materials like wool blankets, (faux) silk curtains, thick area rugs, and velvet accent pillows. See my examples on how to pull off Le Dramatique in your home.

Men’s Style:home edition by Bridget Shelton

Men’s home décor is quickly rising in popularity. With fall term creeping up and the annual move to a new place for the school year, take advantage of the opportunity to express your taste! You don’t have to spend a lot of money for your home to look like you hired an Interior Designer. I will give you a checklist so you know exactly what you should splurge on and where you can save the most money. Have comic book posters, art or figurines? That’s fine! You don’t have to hide it, but there is a way to display your collections in a tasteful way. Hang floating shelves on the wall for the figurines, or put them in shadowboxes. Put your posters and comic books inside frames. You can find super cheap frames at craft stores, Wal-mart or Target. Not only will this make them look expensive, it will protect them for long term use and make them easier to move place to place

Linens-Sheets can be hard to shop for, trying to decipher what the words mean is similar to reading a foreign language. Let me make it easy for you: look for 200-400 thread count in 100% Egyptian Cotton, the best quality is made in Italy. Please, please, please, wash them every week, at the most every other week; or more often if you have an active lifestyle. You should aim to spend around $50-60 for a quality set. They will last a long time and you will love how soft they feel. 22.

ComforerHave an old comforter that needs updating? Look for a duvet {doovay} cover; it is a fancy name for a sheet that you put an existing comforter into. They are relatively inexpensive and will appear as though you spent a lot of money on bedding.

Bed FrameHaving your mattress and box set off the floor and placed in a bed frame will not only give you extra storage under the bed, it will also make your bedroom look more “grown up.” There is something sexy about a man who has a comfortable, adult bed. IKEA has a nice bed frame for only $129. Too much? Craigslist is the perfect place to find cheap or free furniture. The best time is when school terms are ending, people don’t want to move a bunch of furniture so they often give it away!

Art-Having unique pieces of art throughout your home that portray your taste is a big turn on for women. You don’t need to drop a large amount of money on original art pieces, unless you want to. You can easily get prints of famous artwork online. Art students are also an underused resource, most will be willing to create a custom piece for as low as the cost of the materials to make it..

FragranceNobody likes the smell of dirty laundry and gym bags. Putting a reed diffuser in your room is a no fuss, no maintenance task that will emit steady fragrance for months. These can be found at most department stores including Bed Bath & Beyond and Pier 1 Imports.

6. 7. 10. 11. 12. Shower CurtainDid you know that you should have two separate shower curtains? A decorative one that stays on the outside of the shower and a clear plastic one that stays on the inside of the tub so water doesn’t spill out. You can get the clear plastic liner at the Dollar Store. They need to be cleaned with bleach or replaced once they start to get pink mold at the bottom.

Bath MatHaving a bath mat to step onto after you take a shower will not only feel wonderful, it will help keep your bathroom floor puddle free.

Accent PillowsI’m not talking about frilly pillows all over your seating area. Find nice, comfortable and most importantly, soft pillows. Having a couple on the sofa is perfect for when you need a cat nap, or just want to lounge comfortably while watching television. Solid color velvet pillows can be found at Pier 1 Imports for $19.95 each, but can be as low as $15 each if you wait for a sale.

ArtAs I already mentioned for the bedroom, your living room is another great place to show your style and taste. If you are living with roommates then you can all pick a theme together based on your similar interests. I suggest looking at Jackthreads. com, a men’s discount site that has awesome home decor like these Marvel Comics canvas prints on page 21!

OrganizerUtilizing a tray for your coffee table may save you time and frustration. Having a place to put the remotes, phone, keys, and other items will help you keep everything in order. Skimp on tables; these LACK tables from IKEA come in a variety of bright colors and they are cheap! The Red Metal TV stand also from IKEA is only $99!

After the Show

by Kathleen Menard photography Teresa Yoshiura

A beauty feature describing the inner confidence one experiences after they’ve attended a concert.

27.

Focused on the buoyancy that is revealed after one attends a concert featuring their favorite artist, the goal of “After the Show” relies solely on the reflection of beauty from the concert to the fan’s exterior. The absorption of musical riffs and well-executed lyrics leave the admirer feeling renewed. The expression on the concert-goers face after they leave a show is a symbol of rebirth, confidence, exuberance and adrenaline. The makeup isn’t perfect like when she left the house, but it’s elegantly disheveled in a way that tells her peers who she is in that moment. She absorbs the energy that the music exhales and carries it with her in poise. This shows in her face especially, with her smudged eyeliner, dewy face, dark lips and messy hair. On a deeper level, it is visible in her eyes with hope that the next concert will be just as magical. Her bodies still pulsing from swaying to the music, not yet ready to stop.

28.

Dark lips create an edgy aesthetic that lets their peers know their identity without saying a word.

Quick Fix Trail Mix

Making Moves Muffins

Just Right Salad Jars

If you’re in a rush between your classes and can’t find the time to stop for a mid-day snack or lunch, try packing a healthy trail mix and keep it close at hand in your bag. Instead of a mix full of sugars and fats, try and find trail mixes that substitute those with ingredients such as dehydrated fruits, seeds, almonds, and dark chocolate chips. Trader Joe’s has some awesome and healthy pre-made trail mix options as well as stores such as Fred Meyer and Winco, which offer bulk selection making it easy for you to pick and choose items to make your perfect mix.

Dragging yourself out of bed for an 8:00 am class, energy level nonexistent, and no time for breakfast? We all have those days, weeks and even terms but stop making excuses. Your body needs it’s morning energy to keep you going all day through classes, work, and even that time in the gym. Try a nutrient filled muffin for breakfast. It’s easy to take on the go, tastes great, and is good for you. Whether you buy a 4-pack from Trader Joe’s or try baking them yourself, you can’t go wrong with these healthy little chunks of goodness. If you’re buying your muffins at the store, make sure you chose an option with little to no non-organic or processed ingredients.

Mason Jar salads are the newest and most environmentally friendly way to transport your salad, especially for times when you’re on the go. Mason Jar salads allow you to get creative with your meal, shorten your meal prep time for your busy weeks, and keep your body and the environment clean. Start by filling the jar with your favorite salad dressing. Follow your dressing with the topping you please. Last, place your greens in and you’re ready to go. If it seems like you have no time for getting healthy meals together, try putting a few of these salad jars together at the beginning of your week so that they are easily accessible during even your busiest days.

Kick the Coffee Habitt

According to Harvard Health, getting outside not only gives you a physical boost but a mental one, too! Getting out and active can get you that much needed Vitamin D and the adequate amount of exercise that will lead to a happier, more concentrated, and healthier you. Check out some of these popular areas right here in Corvallis: Bald Hill Nature Area, The Riverfront, and Irish Bend Covered Bridge.

Receiving a massage is a great way to not only feel great but help relieve tension and the stress of your busy life as a college student. Don’t worry about racing around Corvallis in search of a massage studio, OSU offers students and faculty massage services through Dixon Rec Center. With only a small student fee and an appointment standing in your way, you’re on you way to a better, refreshed, less stressed you.

If you’re in search for a healthy alternative to coffee that offers not only that energy boost but concentration and stress relieving agents as well, look no further than tea. With the same positive aspects as coffee, tea is a better choice when it comes to your coffee mug liquid. Corvallis may seem like it harbors coffee shops on every corner, but it is also home to a tea house that offers a wide range of different teas that customers may mix and match as well as buy in bulk. SDHE Project Spotlight by Katie Sherpe photography Hannah O’Leary

If you are anything like this writer, your heart rate increases on the first day of class when a teacher says the dreaded words, “group project.” For some, there is nothing more stressful than having to rely on another student for part of your grade. Sometimes, the important message that a project intends to teach is even lost during the chaos of trying to work with an especially difficult personality. In one class, titled ‘Cross Cultural Aspects of the Near Environment” (DHE 366), a requirement for students in the School of Design and Human Environment (SDHE), yet another group project is assigned by Dr. Genna Reeves-DeArmond. This class focuses on the social-cultural study of the design and function of clothing, interiors, and textiles and the impact that cross-cultural contact may have on modern design choices. In a world that continues to become more globalized and interconnected, DHE 366 aims to teach the importance of meaningful design; that is, to have a deeper understanding and respect for whatever, wherever, and whoever buyers, designers, and future apparel industry workers pull inspiration from. With advanced technologies and quick media sources on the internet, companies come under rapid fire for misconceptions of cultural inspiration that are used to sell apparel products. If you have time, you could probably spend hours researching how often Urban Outfitters, a women’s fashion retailer, is criticized for using generalized terms that do not accurately represent the cultures they are attempting to portray in their products. In a short quarter term, students, Josie Gonzales, Elisa Olsen, and Chelsea Wilkinson partnered up to create a functional, yet meaningful, design inspired by the Armenian culture. “The assignment was to create an acculturated object for someone coming from a different culture to the United States, who wished to represent their culture in a fashionable, modern way with respect to the culture’s values,” said Olsen. “The purpose was to help someone show pride in their culture while also being trendy and able to ‘mesh’ with American fashion and culture.” The group’s goal was to create a product that a modern Armenian bride would wear that could compare, and look similar, to current Western trending jewelry. Likewise, the idea is that a

Western bride, marrying into an Armenian family, could also feel comfortable wearing this jewelry. This makes the designed headpiece more applicable to diverse groups of women. The result of this project, as intended by Reeves-DeArmond, was a newfound respect for Armenian culture. “Personally, it opened my eyes to how interested I could be in something I had never thought of before. As a group, we had so much fun doing this project and were so invested in learning whether it was a realistic product for an Armenian bride that we decided to go even further with our idea and enter the International Textile and Apparel Association competition,” said Olsen. According to Reeves-DeArmond, all three students were awarded the “SDHE Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award” at the 2014 SDHE Celebration of Academic Excellence. So what makes this project so important for future apparel industry workers? “The demand for cross-cultural clothing is best met if there is an accurate understanding of the cultural factors that influence clothing needs and preferences,” Reeves-DeArmond says. “An understanding of cross-cultural near environment design can be fostered through the study and use of the Cross-Cultural Project.”

This fall season, take a cue from the outdoors and natures pure tones. Just as in nature, this doesn’t mean eliminating color; it simply means less is more. When using neutral tones you can create looks using any color family to create a crisp and clean look. This is appropriate for both the office or on the weekend. With these neutral tones, you can still incorporate your pops of color by adding a stripe, print, or bold color to the mix. This look is easily achieved through just simplifying your look by keeping the color palette muted, accessories bold and the styles tailored. By keeping your wardrobe basic, and accessories bold, season after season your fashion will remain a mystery.

The

Surprise in Costume Design By Katy Williams

I

t has been said that behind every great man is a great woman; that is true when talking about AMC’s show “Mad Men” and their costume designer. Emmy nominee Janie Bryant is a well-known television costume designer, and is famously known for “Mad Men.” The show tells the story of a successful ad agency in New York during the 1960’s, which was a pivotal time in the fashion industry. The costume design in “Mad Men” is one, for looks, and two, tells a story about the characters. Bryant pays special attention to the men of the show, adding subtle details to suits, ranging from the kind of cuff link the character is wearing or the style of shirt that is worn under the suit. Don Draper, the star of the show, was a touchy character to dress. He needed to be dressed in what was considered high fashion at the time but also conservative- Bryant needed to find a balance. “The guys in the office,” Ken Cosgrove, Harry Crane, and Paul Kinsey, are dressed in a more relaxed tone. The colors of their suits are darker than Dons and they are seen wearing mainly skinny ties. When Harry gets married changes the way he dresses; he starts dressing for comfort, wearing short sleeve dress shirts and bow ties. Pete Campbell 64.

is the youngest partner in the show. His style of dress changes constantly throughout the show. His suits are made up of different hues of blue and portray him to be the serious, straight-line business that he is. The 60’s were a transitional time for women’s dress. Peggy Olson, secretary turned copy chief, has a consistent style through out the show. Her outfits reflect a sense of innocence, like she is seeing everything for the first time, in respect to her work. The cut of her garments are conservative and old fashion, nothing too revealing or short. Joan Harris on the other hand embraces her femininity through out the show. She wears fitted outfits that exaggerate her silhouette. Bryant dresses the secretaries in the show very similarly. Styles were mixed from both the 50’s and 60’s to create the professional yet fashion forward look. The costume design on “Mad Men” has heavily influenced today’s fashion. Designers such as Marc Jacobs created a spring line inspired by the designs in the show. In the spring of 2013 Jacobs released a ready-to-wear line made up pencil shirts, three-quarter length trench coats, blazers and trench coats. He put a modern touch on the once famous trends by adding sequins or ombrè coloring to the

garments. Also in 2013 Banana Republic launched a “Mad Men” inspired collection. The collection included a variety of cocktail dresses and blouses with geometric patterns. The design in the show is being brought back to this century then given a new modern twist. In 2012 the first movie of “The Hunger Games” trilogy was released into theaters. The movie was an instant hit, not just because of the action packed story line but also because of the brilliant costumes in the movie. Judianna Makovsky has been nominated for three academy awards because of her work in motion pictures over the years. The designs for the movie were at opposite ends of the spectrum at times. At one end, in district 12, the characters were dressed similar to coal miners. They wore pale blues and grays, which was an important detail in the movie. Katniss Everdeen, the star of the movie, wears a blue denim dress when she volunteers as tribute. The dress is noticeably worn in and faded in some parts. She used pale colors so that the black dust of the coal would appear on the garments easily. Because their recourses were so scarce it was important for the audience to believe in their lifestyle based on their clothing.

At the other end of the spectrum is Panems capital city. Where their resources are unlimited and their lifestyles are lavish at the expense of the rest of the country. Effie Trinket, the escort of the district 12 escorts, always has a powdered face, bright wig, and lavish gown on, no matter the occasion. When designing for Effie, Makovsky was inspired by a combination of 1930’s and 18th century aesthetics. The dresses were brightly colored, had excessive rushing and mile high shoulders. She wanted to give Effie a ghostly and evil look which is why she chose to have her face and eyebrows powdered at all times. Since the release of the movie there have been countless “hunger game inspired outfits.” Outfits with a combination of bright colors with black accents to break down the bright colors to create an Effie appearance or a simple blue dress with oxford shoes to recreate Katniss’ first look. Fashion lovers are constantly being inspired by the looks in the movie and then adding their own touch to modernize the look.

Brand Spotlight

eterna bsentia

by Sofiya Popova photography Bret Lorimore As an avid YouTuber, I am always browsing through videos that feature up and coming brands. That is how I stumbled upon Aeterna Absentia and was intrigued that this was all happening in my own hometown. Aeterna Absentia, Latin for Eternal Absence, is a Portland based clothing brand run by two very ambitious men, 22-year-old Marcus Gores and 24-year-old Brayden Hill. Marcus attended Oregon State for a few years and then transferred to Portland State University, where he is currently working on his degree in Business. Brayden is a senior studying Graphic Design and will be graduating from Oregon State in the spring of 2014. I had the opportunity to sit down with the both of them and find out what goes on beneath those perfectly groomed heads of hair.

Sofiya Popova: To start off, how did you two meet? Marcus Gores: Here, actually, at Oregon State. I started noticing Brayden around campus because of his shoes; it all went from there. SP: Why did you guys want to start a clothing brand? Brayden Hill: We got tired of buying other people’s stuff, when we knew that we could do it better. MG: Everything on the market right now is almost what we want it to be, so we thought that we should make something that is exactly what we want. SP: All of your designs are very monochromatic and have an eerie twist to them – what inspired you to create this image for your brand? MG: Black is the new black. It’s eternal. We are very dark and mysterious and enjoy walking on that very thin line. But in actuality, it was a monetary thing. When we first started we couldn’t afford all of the crazy colors, black and white is the cheapest to print. BH: It’s just very classic; it’ll never get old. SP: How did you guys go about sourcing a printing company and deciding what kind of t-shirts to print on? MG: Our shirts are printed on American Apparel; everyone likes the feel and fit. I am close with the guys at Corvallis Customs, so we [go there] to do all of our printing. BH: Our new cut and sew is getting made in San Diego, we met the company on Instagram actually. SP: How does your design process work? Who does what in this partnership? MG: I take care of the business side of things. My focus is on marketing, advertising and networking. BH: I do the actual design work, we both come up with ideas and things we want to try but I am the one who makes it happen.

Brand Spotlight

Dark, rebellious and mysterious. Designer Rick Owens is Aeterna Absentia’s biggest inspiration.

SP: Now that all of the basic questions are out of the way, if each of you could pick only one brand to rock for the rest of your life (apart from Aeterna Absentia), what would it be and why? MG: Rick Owens or Givenchy, they are both so ahead of the curve. BH: Rick Owens everything. SP: What is a brand that you think is way overhyped? MG: It’s hard to just pick one! Diamond Supply Company, Stussy. Everyone is selling out to mass distributors. BH: I would say Been Trill, they have forgotten about the fundamentals of making clothes for their people. It is all the same old same old, nothing new anymore. SP: If you could collaborate with any brand, what would it be? MG: Black Scale, it fits so well with everything we are trying to portray. BH: I agree. But it is hard to choose because everyone has a lot of different markets that they provide for. SP: Walk me through your favorite way to style your shirts? MG: I love to layer. Start with a black biker pant, throw on an under layer like a u-cut tee and a jacket, I prefer a leather or varsity jacket. BH: Always got to have fly shoes! I almost always wear black leggings with black shorts, then wrap a button up around my waist and top it off with a black jacket. Oh, and always have the flow.

SP: And what is this “flow” you talk of? MG & BH: POMADE. Slicked back hair. SP: To finish up, I am sure all our lady readers are dying to know, are you both single? MG:Very. BH: Yes.

Movement is undoubtedly beautiful, but even more striking are the lines that we trace as we move about the world. Think of this work as a blueprint, for the lives we live each and every day - the intricate work of art we could create if we slowed down and thought about where we’ve been and where we’re going. The lines intertwine, tangle, and eventually straighten out, only to create an amazing guide to our past, present, and future. 80.

Music

As a curious anthropologist I decided to conduct some market research consisting of what Oregon State University students listen to when they move about. Specifically, I am interested in what kinds of music gets Oregon State students moving — whether this is during a work out, walking around campus between classes or going on road trips. This anonymous study was conducted because this issue is devoted to the nature of movement. I also believe music has the ability to enhance and inspire much of this movement, and wanted to provide some examples of what students listen to in hopes of inspiring DAMchic readers:
