Reitsma crowned 59th Princess Kay of the Milky Way, rst from Stearns County

August 25, 2012

A Princess Kay rst

BY KRISTA M. SHEEHAN Staff writer

FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. – While growing up on her family’s dairy farm, Christine Reitsma always named her calves after princesses. Now, she’ll have to name one after herself. The 18-year-old was crowned the 59th Princess Kay of the Milky Way during a coronation on Aug. 22, the evening before the ofcial start to the Minnesota State Fair. “I’ve been looking forward to this moment all my life … I’ve always wanted to be Princess Kay,” Reitsma said about what she was thinking while outgoing Princess Kay, Mary Zahurones, placed the crown on her head. “It’s such an honor

to be able to represent the dairy farmers of Minnesota over the next year.” Reitsma, the daughter of Paul and Carolyn Reitsma, is from Sauk Centre, Minn., and the rst Princess Kay of the Milky Way from Stearns County. “It’s an amazing feeling,” Reitsma said about being the rst Princess Kay from her county. “We’ve waited so long for this moment, and I’m not only excited to represent dairy farmers in Stearns County, but the whole state of Minnesota.” Throughout the next year, Reitsma said she is most excited to meet other people to spread dairy messages. “I’ll be getting to meet people just like you who consume three servings of dairy every day and share the importance of Minnesota dairy farmers as well as the importance of that cool refreshing glass of milk,” she said. “I’ll be able to share the everyday stories of Minnesota dairy farmers that produce a Turn to REITSMA | Page 8

Rep. Peterson very concerned about Farm Bill passage Congressman meets dairy leaders on visit to Sibley County dairy BY RUTH KLOSSNER Staff writer

LAFAYETTE, Minn. – The road to a new Farm Bill continues to be bumpy, according to Minnesota 7th District Congressman Collin C. Peterson. The congressman talked about the obstacles encountered by the bill during an August 14 visit to Sunshine Dairy, the Sibley County family dairy farm partnership of Ron and Pam Krueger and Scott and Stephanie Krueger. “We’re in a battle that got worse over the weekend, when [Paul] Ryan was named the vice presidential candidate and [President] Obama came out in favor of the bill,” Peterson told the dairy leaders and media gathered for a quick lunch after the farm visit. “When the Farm Bill was passed in 2008, 317 to 109, one of the 109 was Paul Ryan. He opposes this one, too. It’s not good… it will be more difcult for Republicans in the House to move this bill. Their strategy will be to string this out and not pass [the bill] and get a totally new bill. Then the President came out, pushing for a ve-year bill. Whatever he’s for, they’re against. That will make it harder.” Turn to PETERSON | Page 9

“... the one that works best ... a huge savings for us.” — Janny Kleine

KLEINE DAIRY FARM — Three generations of the Kleine Family CEDAR LAKE, INDIANA — 100 Holsteins RHA: 24,700 lbs — SCC: 150 - 180,000 Herb Kleine, his son David , granddaughter Janny and grandson Greg share milking and farming responsibilities on their 160 acre dairy farm. Along with milking, Janny helps with herd health, runs a pumpkin business, and still finds time to be 4-H Dairy Co-superintendent at the county fair. Greg mixes feed, maintains equipment, and farms 900 acres of row crops with his dad. They also find time to restore antique tractors. Herb takes care of the calves. “We all share the jobs that need doing,” says David.

“We’ve been using Udder Comfort™ for a year. I love the smell of it, and the way it works on swelling and edema,” says fourth generation dairy producer Janny Kleine, who milks twice a day and helps with herd health for the 100cow herd at her family’s Kleine Dairy Farm, Cedar Lake, Indiana. “Whenever we have a trace of a problem, we spray the quarter with Udder Comfort, and it usually clears up without having to treat. I love having this option for those early cases. We can be proactive with the cows and reduce our need for treatments.” “This has definitely helped us stabilize SCC,” adds her father David, “especially when the weather is so hot like this. If we feel a little firmness in a quarter, we spray it. By morning, it’s gone. We tried other products, but Udder Comfort is the one that works best with the most noticeable results.”

“We also use Udder Comfort on fresh cows that have edema,” Janny reports. “Swelling goes down a lot faster. “Our heifers have much better letdown and more complete milkout... and we see less mastitis in early lactation. That’s a huge savings for us.”
