Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Sunnyside

May 1, 2013

Pepe Navarro named 25th annual Cinco de Mayo Parade marshal by Jennie McGhan

Those attending Sunnyside’s 25th annual Cinco de Mayo Parade will see a familiar face leading the procession.

Parade to traverse East Edison Avenue at high noon Sunday The Cinco de Mayo Parade will kick off at noon Sunday, May 5, at Sunnyside High School. Anticipated entries this year include the Sunnyside community float featuring the 2012-13 Miss Sunnyside court, Charro horses, Sunnyside Police Department vehicles and many commercial floats. From 16th Street and Edison Avenue, the route will proceed west on Edison Avenue towards Zillah Avenue and end at the Sunnyside Law and Justice Center at 401 Homer Street. Parade entrants can leave vehicles and trailers for transportation after the parade in the Law and Justice Center parking lot. Entry forms can be obtained at the Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce office or online, at www.sunnysidechamber. com. There is no fee to enter the parade.

That’s because Pepe Navarro, owner of Navarro’s Community Center and El Mejor Taquito, will be at the head of the pack. He has been named the grand marshal for this year’s parade. “I am happy,” Navarro said of the honor, noting he was the grand marshal in 2000, as well. Navarro could be the poster boy for an individual who has worked hard to live the American dream. He said, “I feel I am an example for the community.” Navarro said he feels Sunnyside has shown an appreciation for the Mexican culture by celebrating Cinco de Mayo. He said Cinco de Mayo is a tradition he grew up with when he lived in Mexico and by celebrating it here, he feels like he is home. He said he came to the U.S. to live the American dream. He worked hard, opening a taco truck in 1988. In 1998 Navarro was able to open El Mejor Taquito’s restaurant on South Sixth Street. Two years later, he expanded his business to include Navarro’s Community Center. “I want the community to see that those who come here to live the American dream are willing to work hard,” said Navarro. He said, “If you work hard you can achieve your dreams.” Navarro said he was able to accomplish all that he has with the help and support of his

He said his family has dedicated their lives to improving life and the community. “This is an example of hard work paying off,” said Navarro. Being named grand marshal for the parade makes him believe others recognize that aspect of his life.

“I feel very good that Cinco de Mayo has been a tradition in Sunnyside. Celebrating the day that the (Mexican) peasants defeated the French at the battle of Puebla is an honorable tradition,” Navarro said. ‑ Jennie McGhan can be contacted at 509-837-4500, or email JMcGhan@DailySunNews.com

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Sunnyside

May 1, 2013

Charros compete for top honors Sunday This year’s Cinco de Mayo festival will again include a Charro competition. This Sunday, May 5, Charros from far and wide will be ready to take the stage for a chance at top honors. Banda Perla Azteca will be providing live music for the Charros and their horses. The band is set to take the stage Sunday at about 1 p.m., after the parade, to play for the Charro competition. Horses for this competition will be dancing to banda-style music. The competition is scheduled from approximately 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Sunnyside’s Central Park. Competition organizer Samuel

Correa says the competition will be judged by one individual, “… someone that really knows what they are looking for,” he added. The judge will look at horses’ movements, how high they can lift their legs, how relaxed they are and their overall performances. There will be trophies and a saddle awarded to those who place in the competition. This year the parade will have about 40 Charros in it. Nearly 20 of the horses seen in this year’s parade will compete at the Charro competition for prizes. All participants of the competition and those who ride in the parade will receive a bag of feed for their horses.

Ruben Santana (left) and Rogelio Ramirez allowed their horses, Diamante Negro and Principe, to show off for the crowds watching the Charro competition at Sunnyside’s annual Cinco de Mayo celebration.

Five-year partnership between Sunnyside police, chamber beneficial by Jennie McGhan

The Sunnyside Police Department and Chamber of Commerce have been working together in partnership, organizing the annual Cinco de Mayo festivities for about five years. The partnership developed when Sgt. Joey Glossen began attending committee meetings for the annual event. He said police officers were busy responding to numerous calls prior to becoming involved in the planning of the Cinco de Mayo festivities. There were some gang-related incidents and the weekend would become chaotic. One year, several postal boxes at the Sunnyside Post Office were vandalized. Wanting to stem the criminal activity, the police department became more involved and teamed up with organizers so that criminal activity could be reduced each year.

The past two years, said Glossen, there has been a reduction in police calls. That reduction is so great that officers respond to fewer calls over Cinco de Mayo weekend than on an average weekend in Sunnyside. “When planning for Cinco de Mayo begins, I get involved,” he said, stating he attends the Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce committee meetings. Glossen said he provides input regarding the event, “… especially if a particular activity will have a large effect on security.” He said he learns what is planned so that the police department can know what to expect and where a higher security presence will be necessary. Glossen also has insight into where other resources like public works will be needed. “I have a pulse on the event,” he said. Glossen said the Sunnyside Police Department dedicates

approximately 170 man hours to the Cinco de Mayo festivities. The chamber is billed for the officer hours. In addition to the paid time, Glossen said reserve officers, explorers and reserve officers from other agencies donate their time to the event. “The chamber also hires additional security,” he said. Glossen said he is proud of the partnership developed between the Sunnyside Police Department and the chamber because those attending Cinco de Mayo festivities feel safe and can enjoy themselves. “It’s an improvement in the community,” he said, stating the relationships developed also give the public and the business owners an opportunity to interact with officers in a positive manner. ‑ Jennie McGhan can be contacted at 509-837-4500, or email JMcGhan@DailySunNews.com

The history behind Mexico's unofficial holiday A poorly armed military consisting of 4,500 soldiers, some of whom were farmers or native-Indians armed only

with machetes, turned away the invading French in the spring of 1862. The historic battle near Puebla,

Daily Sun News file photo

Members of Sunnyside High School’s Latino Culture Club entertain those at last year’s Cinco de Mayo festivities with a folkloric Mexican dance routine.

Mexico temporarily stemmed the desire of Emperor Napoleon III to take over Mexico. It also marked the first French defeat in 50 years. The unlikely victory over the 6,500-strong Foreign Legion, armed with the most modern military equipment of the times, also served as the catalyst to unite the Mexican nation. Residents of the state of Puebla have been celebrating that May 5th victory over the French ever since. Over the years, other parts of Mexico have adopted the unofficial holiday. Today, Cinco de Mayo festivities also abound in numerous communities in the U.S. where there is a significant Hispanic population, such as Sunnyside. The plan of conquest by the French was simple…march from the coastal town of Veracruz to Mexico’s capital, Mexico City, and ransack it. What the heavily armed French, led by the colorfully dressed Dragoons, hadn’t counted on, however, was the cunning of Texas-born General Ignacio Zaragoza. The Mexican general rounded up a force of about 4,500 men, then mapped out a strategy to stop the French cold in their tracks. The epic battle took place at Puebla, approximately 100 miles east of Mexico City on the morning of May 5, 1862. The French commander, in a move some describe as fool-hardy, divided his troops. He sent the Foreign Legion’s cavalry to attack the horsemen under the command

Se Habla Español

of Col. Porfirio Diaz, who had been ordered by Zaragoza to attack the French flanks. Diaz and his troops annihilated the French cavalry. The remaining members of Zaragoza’s lightly-armed militia then went tooth-andnail with the Foreign Legion’s main force, mainly infantrymen. The French suffered heavy losses, enough so to thwart their march on Mexico City. Napoleon countered a year later by sending 30,000 more troops to Mexico. It didn’t take long for those invaders to conquer the Mexican army. Napoleon thereafter named Maximilian as the ruler of Mexico. Four years later, however, with the help of U.S. military forces, Maximilian was executed and his troops were ousted from Mexico. A common misconception is that May 5 is Mexico’s Independence Day. It’s not. Mexico celebrates Independence Day on Sept. 16. It was on that day in 1810 that Mexico declared its independence from Spain. But, it took another 11 years before Mexico forced the first of the Spanish soldiers out of the country. Mexico remained in a frenzied, political state for the next 46 years, with such incidents as the Mexican-American War in the late 1840s and the Mexican Civil War of 1858. It wasn’t until 1867, with the help of U.S. forces, that Mexico finally took control of its own government.

Find nature’s bounty in your pantry (Family Features) Nature’s bounty has arrived with an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables available everywhere, including the canned food aisle at your local grocery store. Most canned fruits and vegetables are picked at the peak of ripeness and canned just hours after being harvested. So, all of that goodness is always on hand in your pantry, making it simple to get nutritious meals on the table that your family will love. Many canned fruits and vegetables have the same nutrients as their fresh or frozen counterparts, according to a University of California Davis study. Our grandparents and great grandparents knew this. The canning process they used is the same process still used today, which locks in the freshness and nutrients of foods, naturally. “When it comes to canned fruits and vegetables, I know I’m serving the natural goodness of the food,” said Jeanne Benedict, entertaining expert and cookbook author. “Canned foods not only help guarantee a homemade and delicious meal on the dinner table, they’re quick and easy – which means more quality time spent with the family.” With a pantry stocked with canned foods, you have an amazing number of quick and delicious meal solutions right at your fingertips. These no-cook dishes will

have you in and out of the kitchen without breaking a sweat, and earn cool points from the family. For more recipes and to learn how you can get cooking with cans, visit www. audiences in the Lower Yakima Valley is Tierra Caliente. Tejeda said this is because many residents living in the Lower Valley have roots in Michoacan, Jalisco and Colima, states in Mexico. “That region is hot and dry, Tierra Caliente,” he explained. Tejeda said comparing the style of music from the region is much like comparing the jazz style from New Orleans to other musical genres in the U.S. “Its regional flare appeals to the local audience,” he said of Tierra Caliente music. Tejeda said this year the bands bring different styles, exposing those attending the Cinco de Mayo festival to popular groups and expanding their musical knowledge. “Last year we had Alfa 7. Sale of Mexican jumping beans to benefit local church youth group by Jennie McGhan

Members of Sunnyside’s Apostolic Assembly of the Faith in Christ Jesus will be raising funds for the church’s youth group via sales of Mexican jumping beans at Sunnyside’s annual Cinco de Mayo celebration. The group will have a booth where the entertaining beans can be purchased.

Paula Chavez said Mexican jumping beans are really a seed that has been inhabited by a moth larvae. She said there are trees in Mexico that has flowers to which a specific moth is attracted. The moth lays its eggs in the flowers and when the seeds develop the moth larvae remain. Mexican jumping beans are entertaining to people, according to Chavez.

She said the beans must be kept cool. When they are exposed to warmth the larvae will move, making it appear as though the beans are jumping. “The phenomena is entertaining,” Chavez said, noting her group will be selling packages of five beans with care information and a game that can be played using the beans. “They are unique…I don’t know of anything like it,” she said.

Chavez said the once popular novelty is something her group thought would be popular among those attending Cinco de Mayo festivities. All proceeds from the sale of the Mexican jumping beans will be used for youth activities and to assist with the cost of sending youth to summer camp. ‑ Jennie McGhan can be contacted at 509-837-4500, or email JMcGhan@DailySunNews.com

READY TO HELP Spaghetti Verde

Host a Chic Cinco de Mayo soiree Miriam Martinez of Sunnyside enjoys being creative with family meals. She devised a couple of dishes that have become favorites among the people whom she loves. Spaghetti Verde, inspired by traditional Italian spaghetti, involves blending the flavors of Mexican ingredients with pasta. Milanesas de Pollo is a simple chicken dish that pleases the palate. Spaghetti Verde Similar to Italian spaghetti, using Mexican cheeses 1 lb. spaghetti noodles (cooked) 10 oz. Crema Mexicana (table cream) 2 cubes Chicken bouillon 6 oz. Annual Cinco de Mayo softball tourney planned Sunnyside will host a Cinco de Mayo men’s softball tourney during the weekend of its annual Cinco de Mayo festivities. Bob Sarmiento is organizing the tourney, which will be played on Saturday, May 4, and Sunday, May 5. The winning teams at the tourney will qualify for a berth at a slo-pitch state level tournament to be held this coming August. He anticipates eight to 10 teams will participate in the two-day tourney, some traveling from as far away as Moses Lake and Wenatchee. The tournament will take place at Sunnyview Park, located along Yakima Valley Highway between Sunnyside and Grandview. Sarmiento believes the location is ideal because it is central to communities in the Yakima and Columbia Basin regions. The tournament will start at about 9 a.m. Saturday with pool play, guaranteeing each team will play four games. On Sunday, the top teams will play in a single-elimination tournament. Competitors will be divided into four groups; the rec, bronze, silver and gold

divisions. There is an entry fee of $250 per team. Teams can sign up by calling 836-2236 or 830-5727. The top two teams in each division will receive a trophy and a commemorative t-shirt. Every team will also receive two all-star t-shirts for their top players. Each of the teams will bring an average of 13 players with them, as well as family and friends to support them. The impact is one that benefits local businesses, including motels and restaurants. In addition, Sarmiento buys his supplies locally. “I buy all my stuff here, at least $1,000 between food and shirts,” said Sarmiento. “And the players, once they’ve finished a game, they aren’t going to want to go home and eat, so the tournament helps local business as well.”
