invited Mark True to come from Moscow and establish a hotel here. The result was the Palace Hotel located on the southeast corner of Paradise and Kamiaken Streets. The town’s first artesian well was discovered while drilling a well for the hotel. These wells soon attracted newcomers to the area. Railroads came from the west and the north and the town grew and incorporated in 1888. After Washington gained statehood in 1888, there was fierce competition among the towns east of the Cascades to be the location of the land grant college. The Washington State College was established on the northeast part of Pullman in 1889 opening with 21 students, and the town entered a new era. That small school is now Washington State University with branches in other parts of the state.
