History of the Palouse The Palouse is a region in the northwestern U.S. that encompasses north central Idaho and southeastern Washington, and is known for the majestic landscapes of rolling farmland and wilderness areas. There is

no clear origin of the name “Palouse,” but one theory is that French-Canadian fur traders converted the name of the Palus tribe to the more familiar French word pelouse, which means “land with short and thick grass.” Since that time, the area has become renowned for growing wheat and legumes, and has held the title of the

Idaho named Moscow as the home of the state’s land grant institution, the University of Idaho. Just across the state line, Pullman, Washington was named in 1890 to be the home of the land grant institution of Washington State University.

Located at the junction of three streams (South Fork of the Palouse River, Missouri Flat Creek and Dry Creek) in what is now the downtown area, Pullman (first known as “Three Forks”) has a rich history going back to the 1870s. First on the site was Bolin Farr from Missouri who settled on present day Park Street and later built a house there. Second was Daniel McKenzie who came in 1877 and built a small home approximately on the present day location of the Manor Lodge on Paradise Street. In 1881 Farr and McKenzie platted the town site. The town’s application for a post office called “South Palouse” was rejected by the Post Office Department. The next application with the town name of Pullman was accepted. One theory is that the adopted name came from George Pullman, the king of the great railroad sleeping car. When informed of the town’s action, the railroad magnate reportedly donated $50 to start a city library. Soon after, McKenzie invited Mark True to come from Moscow and establish a hotel here. The result was the Palace Hotel located on the southeast corner of Paradise and Kamiaken Streets. The town’s first artesian well was discovered while drilling a well for the hotel. These wells soon attracted newcomers to the area. Railroads

came from the west and the north and the town grew and incorporated in 1888. After Washington gained statehood in 1888, there was fierce competition among the towns east of the Cascades to be the location of the land grant college. The award went to Pullman, and the town was forever changed. The Washington State College was established on the northeast part of Pullman in 1889 opening with 21 students, and the town entered a new era. That small school is now Washington State University with branches in other parts of the state.

Today Pullman is the pulse of the Palouse, the largest city in the region and home to a diverse population of more than 29,000 residents and students of Washington State University. Pullman is rich with culture, arts and PAC-12 sports activities comparable to that of a big city. Named the 2011 “Best Place to Raise Kids in Washington” by Bloombergs Businessweek. the area was first named “Hog Heaven” which was later changed to “Palouse Valley.” In 1877, Samuel Neff filed for a postal permit under the name of Moscow because the area reminded him of his hometown of Moscow, Pennsylvania. In 1875, the city’s first store was opened on what is now Main Street. Moscow grew with the arrival of the railroad in 1885. The town became incorporated in 1887 and was chosen as the site for a land-grant institution, the University of Idaho, in 1889. Idaho

achieved statehood in 1890.

Is located in the heart of Palouse Country â&#x20AC;&#x201C; home of the Appaloosa breed. The museum is a non-profit organization established in 1975 to collect, preserve, study, and exhibit objects and information that illustrate the history of the Appaloosa horse. The museumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s modern facility includes exhibit area; a theater; a hands-on Kidsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Area; a library & archive featuring books, magazines, and videos; and the Apalousey Trading Post gift shop. Exhibits themes range from the early evidence of spotted horses in art and literature, to the relationship between the Appaloosa and the Nez Perce Indians, to the highlights of the modern Appaloosa Horse Club. Codger Pole, Colfax, WA At 65 feet it’s the tallest chainsaw carving in the world. It was built to commemorate a football game between Colfax and the town of St. John. The football game was first played in 1938 and replayed in 1988 by those still around after 50 years hence the “codger” in Codger Pole. Located just off Main Street. Cordelia Lutheran Church, Moscow Seven miles southeast of Moscow off the paved Lenville Road, was established in 1883 by Pastor Peter Carlson. The Cordelia Lutheran Church is the oldest Lutheran Church in Idaho. As the state’s smallest church, it is also the site of the first Lutheran confirmation on the West Coast. Bethany Memorial Chapel, Kendrick, ID Freeze Community Built in 1905, is located six Church, Potlatch, ID miles northeast of Kendrick. Norwegian homesteaders built this chapel. Castle Museum, Juliaetta, ID Visitors are always welcome to tour the privately owned Castle Museum, which was constructed by Abraham A. Adams in the early 1900s. This house, located at 191 State Street, was built of concrete blocks with partitions of concrete 12 inches thick. Adams hoped that one day airplanes would be able to land on the house’s flat roof, and today, the museum’s rooms are filled with a collection of antiques and artifacts relating to local and Pacific Northwest history. Four miles north of Potlatch, the Freeze Church was built in 1899 and has been a Palouse landmark for over a century. Genesee Valley Lutheran Church, Genesee, ID The Valley Lutheran is located 10 miles south of Moscow on Old Hwy 95. The church is a quintessential white country church set on rolling green hills. The Old Willow Inn, Potlatch, ID Built in 1916, the 13,000 square-foot facility features a full-size gymnasium of hardwood maple flooring. It is the largest wood-framed building in Potlatch. In the early years, it was the town’s social center, hosting games, dances, plays, card parties and athletic events. Though the Potlatch Company dismantled the largest white pine mill in the world in the 1980s, the gym remains today a quiet reminder of the days when timber was king and the company town hummed with activity. St. Boniface Catholic Church, Uniontown, WA This beautiful church, located on St.Boniface Street, was built in 1904 and became the first consecrated church in the state of Washington in 1910. Steptoe Battlefield Site and Monument, Rosalia, WA Located near the Rosalia baseball field, is a 25-foot granite memorial that marks the last Indian victory over the U.S. Army in May 1858. This historic battle with 158 mounted troops facing between 600 and 1,200 warriors, ended when a cease-fire gave an opportunity for Col. Steptoe’s

escape back to Fort Walla Walla. Rosalia’s Battle Days Celebration commemorates this noteworthy event.

Includes 200 developed acres that border the Snake River as the gateway into Hells Canyon, famous for being North America’s deepest gorge. Hobo Cedar Grove Botanical Area, Clarkia, ID Has old growth trees that were just seedlings in 1492. It is now one of the oldest cedar groves in the world. The 240 acre grove is dominated by a dense canopy of large western red cedar with a carpet of lady fern. The trail has a gentle gradient making it accessible to older persons or those with moderate physical impairments. The trail width is about 40 inches. Laird Park, Potlatch, ID Located just 38 miles north of Moscow and situated next

Latah County Robinson Park, Moscow Located 4 miles east of Moscow, features picnic facilities for large and small gatherings, and RV camp sites including electrical hook-ups and outlets for 20, 30 and 50 amps (no water hookups). Little Boulder Creek Campground & Picnic Area, Deary, ID Located just 28.5 miles east of Moscow on the Potlatch River. Mary Minerva McCroskey State Park’s Skyline Drive, Plummer, ID Has a spectacular view of the rolling Palouse hills. Skyline Drive winds over several mountain peaks for 25 miles and ends in Farmington, WA. Take Hwy 95 north out of Moscow for approximately 25 miles and watch for the Skyline Drive turn-off. Giant White Pine Campground, Harvard, ID Is located on the White Pine Scenic Drive, one of Idaho’s “Scenic Routes,” that takes visitors through a six-mile corridor of majestic white pines in the Clearwater National Forest. The campground area has several hiking trails, 15 camp sites and restrooms. To get there, take Hwy 95 north to the Potlatch turn off on State Hwy 6 and proceed through the small towns of Princeton and Harvard. Signs clearly mark the scenic route. Paradise Path Moscow, 1.5 miles, easy, urban. The Paradise Path is a system of connected paths and bike lanes running roughly eastwest through Moscow. Gain entrance to the Paradise Path from the Chipman Trail on the west, the Latah Trail on the east, and from many points within Moscow, including 6th St. in downtown Moscow.

Pullman Trail System Distance varies, urban. The Chipman Trail also connects to a growing system of trails running throughout Pullman, including paths along Grand Avenue and Terre View Streets.

Latah Trail Moscow to Troy, 11 miles, easy to moderate climbs, scenic. This is another smooth, paved path connecting the towns of Moscow and Troy, Idaho. The trail parallels Highway 8 to Howell Road, where it winds north through a heavily-forested area to complete the last few miles of its journey.

Ed Corkill Memorial Trail Distance varies, easy. The trail begins near the Kendrick High School and runs along Highway 3 and scenic Potlatch Creek for 5.3 miles ending at the Juliaetta Centennial Park and baseball field.

Several boxcars full of new Model T Fords are reported as still at the bottom of this lake. Tips Alison More than one successful landscape picture of the same location on the Palouse can sometimes be made by simply changing your camera’s lens and/ or perspective. A wide angle lens (28 mm or less) set to a small aperture on a camera that is positioned a few feet from foreground details overlooking a broad Palouse field can create a dramatic, traditional landscape image. Alternatively, a long lens of 100 mm or more used at a greater distance from the subtle curves of rolling hills and field textures simplifies and softens the scene and can make for more painterly, abstract images.

Instead, the rolling fields of the Palouse and endless miles of gravel roads provide each photographer with a unique opportunity to follow his or her own vision. I have been photographing around the Palouse for more than three years and seldom shoot from the same location twice. Steptoe Butte offers a reliable location to get above the crest of the hills, but I generally prefer to combine a bit of exploration with shooting. A detailed map will help you find the lesser traveled roads, or go without and explore. Some of my most enjoyable photography has been while lost. Keep in mind that the hills surrounding you are private land. If you plan to trek out across the fields, make a point to introduce yourself to the land owner get their permission. Late spring and early summer

are certainly the best times of the year for photographing green and then golden fields of wheat. Winter in the Palouse is often dull and gray, but a clear sunrise over fields freshly dusted with snow can be a real prize to a photographer lucky enough to be out at the right time.

• Always bring extra film and your tripod • Scout your locations ahead of time, when possible. Head out when weather and light conditions are at their best or

most interesting. • Consider investing in a topographic map of the area, or stop by the Whitman County Courthouse for a county map showing the back roads in the region. Caution – many of these roads are primitive. Believe all warning signs you encounter. • For best light, shoot ½ hour before sunrise/ sunset and up to 1 hour after sunrise/sunset. Interesting lighting conditions also occur when storms brew over the hills.

1912 Center Located on 3rd Street in Moscow, the former Moscow High School, built in 1912, is a three-story, 30,000 square foot building located on the edge of a historic residential neighborhood, three blocks from the City’s commercial core. It is an excellent example of classical style architecture built during the Progressive School Era, with classic details in brick and white terra cotta that are unique to the area. Perkins was cofounder and first permanent resident of Colfax. Shortly after his arrival in 1870, he began building a log cabin in which the first Republican convention in the county was held in 1872. By 1884, the Perkins family built a beautiful Victorian style home that still stands today and is an important historical landmark. The Whitman County Historical Society has refurbished the turn-of-thecentury mansion which is open Thursday and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m., Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Colton, Washington The Colton story began in 1879 when L. J. Wolford, Roy Woodworth and Dr. Cole, being dissatisfied with the proprietor of Uniontown, decided to found a town of their own. They acquired the property from Gregory Koshier and the town was platted that year. The name came from the first three letters of Dr. Cole’s last name and the last three letters of Mr. Wolford’s son, Clinton. That same year the Steptoe Canyon road was built. The main road at that time was from Pullman through Johnson which made the Steptoe Canyon road the best route to the river grain terminals through Colton insuring early success of local businesses. Juliaetta, Idaho In 1878 Rupert Schupfer homesteaded the land where Juliaetta is located. For a short time the town was known as Schupfer or Schupferville. When the post office was established in 1882, the first postmaster, Charles Snyder, renamed the town after his two daughters, Julia and Etta. In the 1890s a tramway was installed and warehouses erected for the grain raised on the ridges above Juliaetta. It was powered by a steam engine and consisted of a track on which sled-like cars operated. Eventually seven wagon roads led to Juliaetta, with lumber, grain, and fruit as the area's principal products. In the late 1890s and early 1900s, Juliaetta was quite a promising town with a flour mill, sawmill,

began on what was then the largest white pine sawmill in the world. Potlatch built homes, commercial buildings, schools, churches, a post office, and an opera house. Nothing was privately owned until 1952 when the company sold the town, giving residents first option to buy their houses. It donated the library, fire hall and truck, church lots, and other public facilities to the town. The mill operated until 1981 and was dismantled in 1983. The spectacular scenery surrounding Potlatch consists of deep pine forests and grassy meadows, clear rivers and babbling mountain streams, providing year-round recreational opportunities. He soon returned with his wife, Lady Charlotte, and two daughters, Gwendolyn and Dorothy. In a few years the Bovills had built a hotel for the accommodation of sportsmen wishing to enjoy the area's superb hunting and fishing. In 1907 he established a store to serve the homesteaders and was appointed postmaster. The extensive logging of the white pine by the Potlatch Lumber Company and the rowdy logging camps and loggers ruined Bovill's paradise. He and his family left the area in 1911. Genesee, Idaho Originally Genesee was a village that grew up about a mile east of the present town beginning in 1872. When in 1888 the Spokane & Palouse Railway was extended to Genesee, the owner of the townsite, Jacob Rosenstein, asked what was considered an exorbitant price for rightof-way and grounds. By the time the railroad tracks reached Lewiston in 1898, Genesee had been the end of the line for ten years and was an important shipping point to which cattle and hogs were driven from as far away as Cottonwood and Grangeville. Hay and grain warehouses sprang up alongside the tracks, and business boomed on the main street. In the early 1900s fruit was an important product, and apples were shipped out by the carload. Visitors to Genesee can enjoy the historic buildings downtown, take a country drive to admire the beautiful rolling hills of wheat, barley, garbanzo beans, peas and lentils, or shop at the local antique store. Another great adventure is to visit the National Historic Site, White Springs Ranch. Take a trip back in time and see the circa 1876 log cabin and the 1884-1904 farm home.
