Four to compete for Fairest of Fair Terri Pederson Daily Citizen
JUNEAU | Four women are in the running for the title of 2014 Dodge County Fairest of the Fair this year. Ashley Modaff, Juneau; Laura Schoenike, Oconomowoc; Amber Stangler, Watertown, and Carrie Warmka, Fox Lake, are competing for the title. Modaff, 20, is the daughter of James and Marcia Modaff, Juneau. She attends Moraine Park Technical College and is pursuing a degree in early childhood. After graduating, she plans to attain a master’s degree in social work. Her passion is working with youth. She enjoys cooking, baking, 4-wheeling, playing softball, photography and spending
time with family, especially her nieces and nephews. “I’ve always enjoyed the hard work, dedication and pride the youth put in their exhibits,” Modaff said. “I would love to be selected as the next ambassador of the Dodge County Fair and represent all the high quality youth.” Schoenike, 21, is the daughter of Sally Schoenike and the late Jim Schoenike of Oconomowoc. She attends UW-Whitewater working on a degree in educationbusiness and marketing and a minor in dance. She is involved in many collegiate organizations such as WI Business Education Association, Optimist International and UW-Whitewater Dance Department. She enjoys
dance, canoeing, volunteering and cake decorating. “Dodge County Fair is something that is near and dear to my heart,” Schoenike said. “I grew up on these grounds.” Amber Stangler, 20, is the daughter of Sheldon and Marie Stangler of Watertown. She attends UW-Whitewater and is pursuing a degree in physical education. After graduation, she plans to focus on photography and party planning. Stangler is active in Catholic Student Coalition, Habitat for Humanity and the UW-Whitewater Marching Band. She enjoys working on her dad’s farm, playing sports, drawing, painting and gardening. “When I was little, the
Fairest of the Fair was a role model to me, and I really want to be a role model for the FFA and 4H kids.” Warmka, 20, is the daughter of Russ and Laura Warmka of Fox Lake. She attends UW-Madison majoring in dairy science. She is involved in many collegiate organizations such as Association of Women in Agriculture, National Agri-Marketing Association, Badger Dairy Club and Sigma Alpha. She was recently honored as a 2014 Holstein Association USA National Distinguished Junior Member Semifinalist. Final interviews and the crowning of the 2014 Dodge County Fairest of the Fair will take place at the fair on Aug. 13.

Auction supports dairy youth Dodge County Dairy Youth participating in the dairy project will be recognized for their hard work at the Dairy Youth Recognition Auction Aug. 17 at the Dodge County Fair in the Farm Progress Arena. The pre-sale luncheon begins at 10:30 a.m., followed by the auction at 11:30 a.m. A maximum of 16 Dodge County Junior Dairy Show participants will be represented in the auction. To qualify, the youth must have won at least one of 15 classes at the 2014 Dodge County Fair. The 16th lot at will be filled by a random drawing from all dairy youth
exhibitors who have turned in an educational card of at least 7 points. Live animals will not be sold, but rather a symbol will be offered of the sale participant’s achievements. The auction items for the 2014 sale are custom-made wind chimes. All of the money generated is allocated to help as many 4-H, FFA and junior breed organizations in the Dodge County Dairy Project as possible. The 2013 auction averaged $696 returned to each participant, and a total of $7,500 in scholarships was awarded to post-high school students who attend two and four year degree

programs. Winners of this year’s scholarships will be announced at the Dodge County Fair, just prior to the 2014 auction. Activities receiving financial support includes field trips, educational literature, Junior State Fair exhibits, dairy judging, Badger Dairy Camp and Dairy Bowl. Those dairy youth learning life skills by turning in the top 4-H record books in dairy also received $25. Bidders will be provided with free gate admission for Sunday and a preauction lunch. Holstein Futurity a formal affair
The Dodge County Holstein Futurity, well known for its quality Holstein cattle and formal atmosphere, will be held Aug. 16 during the Dodge County Fair starting at 12:30 p.m. “Holstein breeders enter animals as calves and show the same animals as two-year-old cows, after they’ve had their first calf,” said Dori Lichty, futurity planning committee member. “During the show, exhibitors parade their cows wearing formal attire; and every year, the show arena is filled to standing-room only with spectators.” To enter in the Dodge County Holstein Futurity, owners must nominate their Holsteins by submitting a fee, per animal, when they’re only calves. “Monies received from the nominations make up the purse of any one year and is divided as prize money among participating exhibitors,” added Lichty. “Sponsorships from area businesses help purchase awards, decorations, etc., too.” For more information on the Dodge County Holstein Futurity, search for Dodge County Holstein Futurity on Facebook.

Junior Fair exhibit schedule listed
Junior Fair exhibitors are busy getting ready for the annual Dodge County Junior Fair, Aug. 13 to 17 at the Dodge County Fairgrounds on Highway 33 east of Beaver Dam. Activities begin Aug 9 with the 4-H Horse Show starting at 8 a.m. Premium judging for this show is followed by speed and game competition. Food and Food Preservation are judged on Aug. 11, at 9:30 a.m. in the Youth Building. Tuesday is entry day. All exhibits must be in place at the fairgrounds by 7 p.m. that day. Judging for flowers, houseplants, plant crafts and home grounds is in the Youth Building at 3 p.m. on Aug. 12. Check-in time for

Dairy Fitting contest is Aug. 15
Beef fitting is in second year
Come to the Dodge County Fairgrounds in the Farm Progress Arena Aug. 12 at 8 p.m. for the 15th Annual Dairy Fitting Contest. Fitters will compete in two categories: Junior Fitters, grades 4-8 and Senior Fitters, grades 9 and older. Fitters will have one hour total to fit the animal. Only the head of the animal may be clipped in advance or prior to the contest. One junior dairy project member can help restrain the animal, but not help clip the animal. One top Junior and Senior Fitter will be named by the judge. The top Junior and Senior Fitters qualify to be in the Dairy Youth Recognition Auction on Aug 17 at 11:30 a.m.

Meat Animal Sale is Aug. 15 Come help support the youth of Dodge County at the Meat Animal Sale Aug. 15 at 7 p.m. in the Farm Progress Arena. Preregistered bidders/ buyers are recognized with a free dinner preceding the auction. Each exhibitor, in order to sell, must participate in a number of educational activities, raise, and show an animal of top quality. All animals purchased will be identified with a buyer’s recognition card until the end of the fair on Sunday evening. Each buyer will also be listed among the Honor Roll of Sale Supporters. Did you miss the traditional livestock shows on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday? The Suprme Showmanship Contest is an opportunity to see youth and their livestock projects in action. Livestock project youth have put in many hours preparing their animal projects for the fair. Don’t miss the chance to witness the top livestock youth. The Farm Progress Arena will host the 5th annual Supreme Showmanship Contest Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. The top junior and senior showmen of the beef, sheep and swine projects will compete against each other in showing their own animal, and then go on to show animals in the other two species.

Junior Britches a new contest Join in the excitement of the new “Junior Britches” Showmanship Contest. Youth going into grades 3-4 will be able to show off showmanship skills. This new contest was created to help promote interest in the Dairy Project. The contest will be Aug. 15 at 11 a.m. All participants will use calves already at the fairgrounds. All participants are encouraged to wear white/khaki pants and use rope/show halters. Toplines are also encouraged, but not required. Judging will be based on proper showmanship techniques as demonstrated by the participant and how well the calf has been trained.
4-H to hold style show The Radio Park stage will be transformed into a fashion runway as the 4-H style show is presented on Aug. 17 at 1 p.m. at the Dodge County Fair. The fun will continue as the Style Show is presented for a second time at the WTKM Stage at 1:30 p.m. Don’t miss the latest fashion trends constructed and modeled by Dodge County 4-H members. From pajamas to formal attire, these 4-H members really know how to sew. The 4-H members participating in the style show also took part in the Clothing Revue on June 17. The Style Show is an opportunity for our youth to showcase their talents and for us to thank and encourage them in their sewing projects.

The contestants will demonstrate their showmanship abilities by leading their May or June dairy calf in front of the Judge.

The contest is open to anyone 4 years of age and older (up to grade 4). Contestants will use a sheep already at the fairgrounds and being provided by Sheep Project members. Judging is based on proper showmanship techniques. This event will take place in the sheep building around 3 p.m. on Aug. 17. Preregistration forms can be picked up at the Dodge County UW-Extension Office or through the Open Class Fair book. Commodity game fun and educational
Dodge County 4-H teen leaders will help “steer” youth in the right direction at the Dodge County Fair this year through a new Commodity Carnival game that walks young people through the steps of bringing steer and cattle to market. Located in the Family Farm Adventure Tent, the interactive game helps young people understand the economics of agriculture — from balancing the costs of feed, labor, transportation and electricity to preparing for changes in weather, new regulations and other unforeseen obstacles. New this year, families will be able to access the Commodity Carnival game online and as a new
downloadable app from their mobile devices. Run by 4-H youth leaders, Commodity Carnival educates participants in two phases. In the first phase, youth are tasked with “raising” a steer — balancing the costs of feed, health and nutrition, production and energy and resources. Once ready for market, the steer is weighed and the participant drops a disc down a Plinko-style board, with pegs representing elements beyond the youth’s control — parasites, bad weather, health news, government regulations and seasonal demands. Family Adventure Tent filled with fun The Family Farm Adventure Tent will again be a feature at the Dodge County Fair. The Family Farm Adventure Tent is filled with hands-on learning opportunities for kids of all ages. Activities will include agricultural crafts and visits from farm friends. Also, be sure to test your knowledge with our Wisconsin agriculture trivia for a chance to win fun prizes. Games include Wheel-of-Farming, Adventure Tent Plinko, and the Commodity Carnival. Each day will focus on a specific aspect of Wisconsin agriculture with visits from live farm animals. Aug. 13 will feature dairy cattle and products. Aug. 14, will focus on beef, sheep, and swine. Horses will be showcased Aug. 15 and small animal friends, including rabbits and poultry, will visit on Aug. 16. To finish the fair, be sure to stop by to see the goats on Aug. 17. New this year, the tent will be featuring Veggie Car Races. Stop by and try your luck at the racetrack with races running every hour on the hour during tent hours. The Family Farm Adventure Tent is next to the Youth Building and is open Wednesday-Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. All tent activities are free.

Listen to the classic children’s stories, and hear a number of new ones at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Wednesday, and 2 and 5 p.m. on Thursday. 4-H cookbook now on sale The Dodge County 4-H Family Cookbook, “Recipes from the Heart of 4-H” will be available for sale at the Dodge County Fair in the Youth Building Office. The cost of the cookbook is $10. This is a collection of recipes shared by Dodge County 4-H Families and alumni. The book also features the history of Dodge County 4-H along with historic photos. Pictures of the current Dodge County 4-H Clubs are also included. The cookbook was part of the Dodge County
4-H Special Emphasis program, “Families are the Heart of 4-H.” The cookbook is also available by mail. Pattie Carroll, Dodge County UW-Extension Family Living Educator, said, “If you have a dial gauge canner, it should be tested every year for accuracy.” Accurate dial gauge readings ensure proper canning temperatures. Proper canning temperatures destroy
harmful bacteria and toxins, which provides safe healthy food for your family and friends. Carroll will be at the Dodge County Fair to answer questions on food preservation and food safety and test dial gauge canners. Just bring your pressure canner lid with dial gauge and gasket to the UWEX
display on the Youth Building on Aug. 13 between 2 and 4 p.m. and Aug. 17 between 3 and 4 p.m. “Food safety is, and should be, a primary concern when preserving food at home, from freezing peas to drying of apples. 4-H Centennial to be celebrated Aug. 16 will be 4-H Centennial Day at the Dodge County Fair. All 4-H members young and old are encouraged to wear their 4-H T-shirts. There will be a parade through the fairgrounds starting at 1 p.m. at the Family Farm Adventure Tent. The parade will end at the same location and conclude with a birthday celebration. There will also be an
area in the Youth Building, which will feature a 4-H Centennial Display throughout the fair. Each 4-H Club is submitting items for a 4-H Time Capsule. The Time Capsule will be filled on Radio Park Stage on Friday at 3:30 p.m. The Time Capsule will then be buried for 25 years with plans to open it up at the 2039 Dodge County Fair.
