Cumberland Valley contains some of the finest agricultural land in Pennsylvania and the United States. One third of the County's land is considered "Prime Farmland" according to the Natural Resource Conservation Service. As a result of the highly productive soils found here, agriculture contributes significantly to the economy and rural character of Cumberland Valley. Agriculture is one of the top industries in the County. There are approximately 1,500 farms of varying sizes in the County, 156,000 acres in agricultural use. This farmland provides residents and visitors with the enjoyment of open space and scenic views of gently rolling farmland. Although large and small crop and dairy farms dominate a majority of the rural landscape, Cumberland Valley also has opportunities for residents and visitors to obtain local fruits and vegetables at its farmers markets, farm stands, CSAs and other retailers.
