Hello cupcakes!

Happy Spring loves!

Raise your hand if you are ready for cute dresses, fun sandals and maybe a cocktail on the deck anyone? I am so ready for warmer weather! I’m so excited for this issue because HELLO - Molly Sims! Isn’t she amazing? Our team had the best day with her last month in West Hollywood at the beautiful Bel Bambini. Molly -- thank you so much for inspiring us all. For those of you who haven’t grabbed her book yet - run now! The Everyday Supermodel is a must-read. This issue is jam-packed with plenty of pretties to get your spring wish list started. It was so fun putting the pages together. I especially love that so many are small businesses we can support! Plus we’ve chatting with some of the leading ladies in the biz -- Nicole Maybaum, Lara Casey to name a few. And of course I couldn’t forget our interview with American Idol’s top 11! As a fan of American Idol since the first season, it was so fun getting to know them. One of my favorite parts of this issue was letting you take a peek inside my home and watching all of the stories come to life on the pages. It’s always so rewarding to support so many of our favorite places to shop and leading ladies. As always -- I just want to thank you. Yes, you beautiful! Thank you for reading! Thank you for letting us be part of your day. Thank you for the support and love. Thank you, thank you, thank you! We wouldn’t be here without you. 8

SPRING BEAUTY

Simplif ied SARAH FRANK, BEAUTY BLOGGER EXTRAORDINAIRE SHARES HER WHAT’S BEST FOR SPRING

Makeup

In the fall and winter I’m all about a good smokey eye, but for spring and summer, give me all things light, bright, and glow-y. I usually go for one of two looks when the weather starts to warm up: easy neutrals on eyes, cheeks, and lips, or a bold, in-your-face lip with subtle definition on lids. For a fresh-faced look with soft, warm tones, take Charlotte Tilbury’s Filmstar On The Go Palette in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and Beach Stick in Ibiza. Warm up the face by applying Ibiza to cheeks, temples, and across the bridge of the nose, and then blend with a fingertip. Apply the bronze shadow from the palette to eyes, and smudge up into the crease, as well as on the lower lash-line for an easy eye look. Take the peachy-pink shade and dab onto the apples of the cheeks, as well as onto lips. What I love about this palette is how quick and easy it is — to take this look from day to night, add another layer of shadow, swipe on a bit more bronzer, and you’ll be ready for sunset cocktails. When I’m out for the day, I always have five to seven lip products on hand (a girl needs option!), and out of those are a few any occasion, swipe-on-without-a-mirror, neutral shades. A really pretty, affordable lipstick that goes along with the spring freshfaced runway trend is Almay’s Smart Shade Butter Kiss lipstick in Nude-light, a peachy nude with fine shimmer. The formula of these lipsticks is awesome - really creamy, really hydrating. Bright, bold lips are always in for spring, and Nars lipstick in Schiap has to be the most gorgeous hot pink, ever. It’s creamy, cupcakeMAG.com

opaque with one swipe, and stays put on lips. I love wearing this shade with a bare face, or with a fine line of Kat Von D’s Tattoo Liner. If you’re more of a red lover, you must, must check out the new L’Oreal Pro-Last Lipcolor in Red Infallible, a gorgeous, bright red. On one end, you have a creamy, long-lasting lip color, and on the other, a balm that locks in color, and keeps lips moisturized. If you like brights, but aren’t ready for a full-on bold lip look, go with a sheer pop of juicy color. I’m loving the YSL Tint In Oils, especially the shade 6, Peach Me Love. The formula contains a deep conditioning oil that melts into lips, and keeps them feeling great for hours. Peach Me Love is a sheer, bright peachypink.

Nails

I love either sheer, pink neutrals, or bright pinks and corals on nails for spring. Classic shades like Essie’s Mademoiselle and Adore A Ball look clean and chic, and compliment any outfit, from a patterned maxi dress to a crisp white button down and black pant. Two of my favorite bright, fun nail colors are also from Essie — Secret Story, a bright pink-fuchsia, and Cute As A Button, a juicy coral-pink. I always receive compliments when I wear these shades, they are both flattering, and look stunning with a little holiday tan. 15

Skin

To keep skin fresh and illuminated for spring, I’ll rely on these three products. Tula’s Illuminating Face Serum helps to keep skin looking radiant even after foundation is applied. It evens out skin tone, and feels really lightweight. My skin isn’t as dry in the spring as it is in the fall and winter, so I like using a light moisturizer all over my face — something that isn’t too thick or heavy. Glossier’s Priming Moisturizer is the perfect pre-foundation step for spring and summer. It helps to achieve a smooth, dewy finish, and never feels greasy. A face mist is perfect for long days spent in the sun. This Sea Vitamin Boost from Osea is a great mid-day makeup refresher; it helps skin to retain moisture, adds a healthy glow, and acts as a makeup fix-up.

Hair

A Sleek blow-out look gorgeous any time of year, and has been a prominent look on the spring 2015 runways. No product helps me to achieve smooth, silky locks like Fekkai’s Brilliant Glossing Styling Cream. The tiniest drop is all you need for your whole head, so one bottle really goes a long way. When the sun’s shining the last thing I want to do is spend extra time inside getting ready. Bumble and Bumble’s Pret-a-Powder will help to extend the life of your sleek blow-out, and leave hair looking clean and voluminous. Unlike other dry shampoos I’ve used, this powder doesn’t leave my hair feeling weigheddown or gritty. I sprinkle the powder all over, concentrating at the roots, and then shake my hair out to ensure that it is no longer visible. 16

everyday super mama one on one with Molly Sims • interview By Casi Densmore-Koon • Sometimes you have to pitch yourself when you spend the day with a super-model. That is just what we did after our photo shoot at Bel Bambini in West Hollywood with the one & only, Molly Sims. Author of The Everyday Supermodel, Molly is one of the most down-to-earth and sweetest Cali girls we’ve met. Molly sits down with cupcakeMAG to chat about her new book, finding balance and keeping it real. 1. Your new book, The Everyday Supermodel is a must-read and killing the charts. Most don’t realize being a supermodel was truly a twenty-year journey of kicking booty for you. What inspired your book? I’ve always been the go-to gal all my girlfriends come to for advice whether it be how to wear their hair for a wedding or what to wear on that first date. As a model, I’ve been blessed to interact with the top hair, makeup and diet gurus in the biz. It truly takes a village to get the glitz and glamour you see in magazines. Nobody wakes up like that!! I LOVE sharing all the tips and tricks I’ve learned through the years. 2. How do you find balance between being a mom, wife & work -- and of course, being a super-model. How do you find your balance? cupcakeMAG.com

It is a daily struggle. It is a struggle that I don’t always win, but I do try my best to keep my family first. What helps me the most is making lists. I literally carry around multiple scraps of paper of all the things I need to accomplish and do. I have huge pile of all these pieces of paper on my desk and I go through my pile every few days so I don’t loose sight of all the projects on my plate. I use my iphone a lot as well. I will take pictures and make notes to help keep me on track. 3. You’re the type of lady every girl wants to be best friends with - you’re fun, down-to-earth, gorgeous & the list goes on. What would you say is the key to being an “everyday” supermodel? Having a child really helps keeps things “real”. You can’t be too fancy if you are spending part of your day changing diapers. Poop is the great equalizer!! Joking aside, my friends and family keep me grounded. Those relationships are what is most important to me. 4. You have some ah-mazing tips in this book. I’m sure you’ve received tons of advice over the years - what’s the best advice you’ve received that seems to have always inspired you? Simply put… Be nice to EVERYONE. Karma, the golden rule whatever you believe in, it just makes the best sense to be nice. My grandma taught me that lesson and I take that with me wherever I go. 19

Things We Don’t Know About

molly sims 1. I have an addiction to my Momma’s red velvet cake. She literally ships me one in the mail from Kentucky every year on my birthday. Dress: Halston Jewelry: H. Stern Bag: Hermes Sunglasses: Ray-Ban 5. Let’s chat beauty. What can we find in your make-up bag, your essentials? Charlotte Tilbury Wonderglow, By Terry Baume de Rose, Stilla convertible color in Lilium, Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer and Chanel Glossimer in 185 6. In the book you mention you weren’t born with the skinny genes. How do you find time to exercise? You always in shape, how did you get there? Do you have a go-to workout? I consider my workout my “me” time. Taking care of myself makes me a better person, mom & wife. You have to make you health the priority. I love a good sweet treat now and then but that can’t be your everyday reality. Or when I really want that treat you have to pay the piper and work out more! I like to mix up my workouts so I don’t get bored and it is also good to keep your muscles guessing. Right now I would have to say that Pilates, yoga and hiking have been my go-to workouts. 7. Any tips or secrets you can spill that didn’t make it in the book? I can spill that I’m in the process of writing another book!!! 8. That last chapter of the book is called, i made that sh*t happen. You are always so inspiring! If you could give advice to someone struggling are making their dreams happen, what would it be? Don’t give up. Keep on knocking on those doors. I was told no a million times and I just kept getting back up and kept moving forward. Align yourself with likeminded positive people. You can’t soar with eagles if you are hanging with turkeys. cupcakeMAG.com

2. It’s not really her red velvet cake I’m after it’s the frosting. I’ve been known to eat the frosting off a entire cake. 3. I’m awful at online shopping. I keep trying but I always end up returning everything. 4. I’m superstitious. I SO don’t like stepping on cracks. 5. I’m a huge animal lover. I have 3 dogs and if my husband would let me I would have a farm. 6. I still have my Southern twang. If I’m talking to my family it comes on strong. Hey y’all!!! 7. One of my guilty pleasures is watching “Days of our Lives”. I record every episode and have watched it for 25 years. But since becoming a mom my time for binge watching “days” is few and far between. The beauty of soap operas is you can miss six months and be able to catch up in one episode 8. My other guilty viewing pleasure is dateline, first 48 or any of those creepy murder shows. My husband teases me that I’m secretly planning his demise. 9. I love to clean and organize. In an alternate universe I would have been an amazing professional organizer. 10. I cry at the drop of a hat. Happy, sad or anything in between the waterworks will flow. Ever since my first pregnancy, my emotions run just below the surface.

We sit down with business owner and mother, Nicole Maybaum to take you behind-the-scenes of Bip and Bop. See why she’s the best boss after hiring other real-life moms and following her dreams. p h oto g r a p h y by Ru st P h oto g r a p h y

Define Nicole Maybaum? Sure. Nicole is amazing, appreciative, hard-working, the best. Not to mention she has the sweetest voice you’ll ever hear. She is a oneof-a-kind little gem of a lady and followed her dreams to make them a reality. Nicole sits down with cupcakeMAG to share with us just how she made designing jewelry into a career. Introduce us to Bip & Bop. When did you decide to start your own company? I loved spending time being creative since I was a child. I ended up studying psychology in college and worked in the special education field as a young adult. I loved it and was passionate about working with children, but always craved more of a creative outlet in my life. When I found out I was pregnant with twin girls, I knew that my life would be forever changed, and that my role as their mommy would be my greatest joy and ultimate purpose in life. Brooklyn and Isabella were born at 33 weeks. Isabella had no major issues and was released from the hospital after three weeks, which were the longest and most challenging 42

weeks of my entire life. Brooklyn, my little miracle baby, was diagnosed with a hole in her heart (Atrial Septal Defect) and because she was unable to finish her feedings, was diagnosed with “failure to thrive.” Her doctors determined that she would need to have a g-tube surgically inserted so that we could use a feeding tube to help her grow. She was finally released from the hospital after she recovered from her surgery at the age of 11 weeks, which also happened to be the end of my maternity leave. With a heavy heart, I returned to work part time. My days off consisted of taking Brooklyn to multiple doctor and specialist appointments, hoping that I was doing everything within my power to get her the early intervention services she needed. My works days consisted of daydreaming about snuggling with my angel babies and holding back tears. It was a very hard time for our family. I dreamed about being able to find a way to make an income while working from home, during naps and bedtime. I did a lot of research and taught myself to make the jewelry similar to what I sell today. I enjoyed every minute of it, because it was a creative outlet for me, and a way to distract me from the stresses of having a child with special medical needs. Just about the time Brooklyn had her open heart surgery (she was 9 months old and weighed only 13 pounds), I decided to just open up my Etsy shop cupcakeMAG.com

At the end of a long, hard day, the thing I most look forward to is

WORKING

and see what happens. I figured I didn’t have anything to lose. (Very) slowly by surely, sales grew and I was eventually able to quit my day job a few months later. I was thrilled to be able to spend my days with my girls! What originally piqued your interest in jewelry? I was given a little initial necklace to wear when the girls were in the hospital. I held it very dear to my heart. Leaving the hospital without my babies, I just felt so alone and empty. Having their initials next to my heart put a smile on my face and helped me cope during those hard days. I have since made myself about ten other necklaces with their names on them. It truly brings me so much joy to make something for my customers that is so special and that they will treasure. Most aren’t aware that your entire staff is just your everyday mom! Tell us when did you decide you needed to finally hire help? Because my days are spent with my daughters, I am only able to work during their nap times and when they are in bed. There was a point back in 2012, that I realized I couldn’t possibly get everything done in a timely manner. Eventually, sales grew so much that I had to get help. Lucky for me, I had the perfect person to help me out! My friend Gretchen is so detail oriented and talented (like literally there is nothing this woman can’t do) that I knew she would be the perfect addition to Bip & Bop. Just about a year later, Gretchen and I felt like we were drowning in orders and needed another person to help us out. My friend Erin, who is equally talented and detail orientated, was going to be going on maternity leave, so the timing couldn’t have been better. During her maternity leave, Gretchen and I showed her the ropes and convinced her to cupcakeMAG.com

stay home and join the team permanently! I could not ask for a better team. Erin and Gretchen always go the extra mile for Bip & Bop customers and I would be absolutely lost without them. I am so incredibly lucky to have my two closest friends work with me. I went to college with both of them 14 years ago, who knew we would be working together today! Let’s face it - you’re busy. You run a business, you’re a mom and a wife. How do you find time for you? I am so incredibly lucky to be able to say this, but Bip & Bop is honestly the one thing that makes me feel the most centered and fulfilled. At the end of a long, hard day, the thing I most look forward to is working. When I stamping jewelry, all of my worries and stress somehow fade away and I feel like myself again. I also LOVE to run and go to barre class especially with my girls, Erin and Gretchen. What has been your favorite experience being an entrepreneur so far? I just love being able to spend my days with my twins, playing at the park, and then after they go to bed, spending time fulfilling orders in my office at home. Those are the best days! Erin, Gretchen and I also loved getting dolled up for our cupcakeMAG photo shoot. It was fun to get dressed up together! What advice do you have for other creatives trying to create an empire? My advice is pretty simple and something I have strived to do from day one. Work hard and be kind and anything can happen. 45

I honestly feel there’s something in my DNA that’s on the

BORDERLINE OF INSANE when it comes to the drive & passion I have to be successful in my business.

1. For the girl that doesn’t know the awesome-ness of Idieh Design, fill em’ in! idieh design (yep, it’s my name backwards!) is a branding, stationery, paper goodies, gift and tech accessories shop for the ridiculously rad and creatively chic. If you walk the line between girly and gangsta, then idieh design just might be your new BFF, sweet cheeks! With a bold style that’s inspired by offbeat patterns, electric color, playful textures, quirky quotes, and the odd pudgy-shaped heart or fancy frill, idieh design is about empowering girls to show their stripes (while not taking life too seriously, of course). A reminder that sharing the confetti pops AND hard knocks of your life is what paves the way for connection, and that our hearts are only fully amped when we own our story and live our style. You dig? 2. You wear many, many hats. Give us the run down in your heels! How do you balance with your busy schedule? Hats are my jam. No, but really they are. They are literally my go-to piece when I can’t seem to find the time to wash my hair. And, believe me, this hair needs some legit TLC. But, seriously, I laugh in the face of balance. If I had it all figured out, things would probably get pretty boring around here and who wants that? I honestly feel there’s something in my DNA that’s on the borderline of insane when it comes to the drive & passion I have to be successful in my business. (I always say if I had the passion & drive to workout like I have the passion & drive to work on my business, I would be straight super model worthy. But, here I sit... eating Sweetarts. The struggle is real, friends.) Anyways, my real 52

answer. I don’t balance. I thrive off the change up in my schedule from day-to-day and I just roll with the punches. Yes, I use the biz stuff like Google Calendar, Basecamp, & keeping that extra pair of flats stored in my car when my feet can’t take another step in heels, but all in all, balance doesn’t exist around here. 3. You have an amazing passion. Did you have an aha moment when you realized this is how you wanted to spend your life doing what you love? Wow. Do you have a few hours? I’ll try to give you the short & sweet version. First off, I don’t think I ever woke up one day and thought, “I’m going to be a #girlboss.” From a very young age, I was the overachiever. Let me put this into perspective for you. I was the Pre-School Big Wheel Champion. The real deal. I graduated as Salutatorian of my high school, but then my life took a quick turn. I unexpectedly lost my Dad to a heart attack a month before leaving to attend the University of Cincinnati and very quickly perfectionism took a backseat to simply “get shit done.” I graduated college, got married and tried to settle down because all the “cool kids” were doing it. I started my small business with small expectations. But, then reality hit and I found myself in a very toxic and abusive relationship. Divorce stepped in, but failure gripped my heart. I moved to Phoenix to heal and I got a heart tattoo on my wrist as a reminder: You’ve got to love your self first before anything else falls into place. This sparked the true mission behind idieh design and, from then I began to paint the path ahead in my true colors. I stumbled into love, quit the 9-5 daily grind, and poured my creative fuel into idieh design cupcakeMAG.com

full-time. Since then, I’ve worked with rad clients from every nook of the globe. Hell, I even collaborated with a local aesthetician to develop a pinkish-purple lip stain called “Heidi”. Yes, I wear it with a shit ton of pride to this day. Short answer: No, I didn’t have an aha moment, but I’ve experienced a journey that I couldn’t be more proud of myself for. Through all the “hoorays” and “bummers” I’ve come thru in the end a stronger, more authentic and better-version-of-myself. Boom. 4. What tips can you give other aspiring creatives to succeed in your field? Find you. Express you. Do you. No one out there can be you and, believe me, I speak from experience, it’s WAY easier to just be you than it is to try to be like someone else. Dig deep and find what really lights your ass on fire. What keeps you up at night? What will make you “super model worthy” in your own sense? (see question 2). Celebrate what makes you unique. Start wearing your story like a badge of honor. Revel in the creativity, whimsy & silliness. And don’t give a second thought to what anyone else has to say about it. Because, if you ask me, the world could use more girls like that. 5. What do you find the most challenging part of this entrepreneur life? To disconnect. To turn off my brain. And to simply relish in my 54

successes versus being so focused on “what’s next.” I was recently interviewed for a podcast and was asked, “What’s your biggest win?” It was a little disheartening that it took some thinking on my part to come up with an answer, but it’s always been a struggle for me. I’m working on it! 6. Being so busy, what’s your favorite way to relax after a busy day? As cliché as it sounds, snuggling up with my man & pups and escaping reality by diving into the fantasy world of movies and TV series if my favorite way to decompress after a crazy day. I always say my man is the calm to my crazy and he’s exactly what I need after my typical day. 7. What’s up next for Idieh Design, Idieh Shop & your blog? 2015 has already been such a crazy ride. I’m growing my team (SUPER stoked!) and it’s been so refreshing to have others onboard who can help me follow my dreams all while I am able to help them follow theirs. I’ll have a relaunch of my site later this year. I collaborated with an amazing copywriter and couldn’t be more excited to share the awesomeness. It’s seriously like fist bumps to my heart! As for the shop, I have a Spring Collection launching at the end of this month. EEK! It’s always a little scary to launch new products, but I’m anxious to see which items become a favorite for my fans. And, for the blog, we just recently relaunched it with tons of new stuff coming this year from weekly contributors to featured day-in-the-life posts. Make sure to check it out! cupcakeMAG.com

make it Happen Seriously sweeter than sweet tea, Lara is a one-of-a-kind southern gal who makes it happen. Inspiring us all daily with her positive energy and kindred spirit, Lara sat down with us to tell us how she does it all. 1. Lara, you are some kind of amazing. For readers who might not be familiar with your empire, catch them up to speed. Ten years ago, right after college graduation, I made the decision to leave the path everyone thought I would take. Not knowing what I was going to do to pay off my college debt or pay my bills, I left theatre and became a personal trainer in New York. I wanted to help people transform themselves from the inside out. Fast forward to two years later when my family’s home was ravaged by Hurricane Ivan, my brother lost the ability to walk in a snowboarding accident and I, fresh off of a failed relationship, had left NY and moved in with my very disappointed and depressed parents. Then, one Sunday afternoon, a tall, dark, handsome Navy gent walked up to me in the gym and introduced himself. Ari was the first person to make me feel loved, not despite my flaws, but with them. He helped heal my family’s heart. Shortly after we started dating, my brother began to walk. A true miracle. My mom – a French chef – got back in the kitchen and my dad started to smile again. I started to believe in true love. Little did I know that I would fall in love with Ari and we would be married just five months later (in Vegas, but that’s another story!). I started a little event planning company and fell in love with the world of weddings. On our one year wedding anniversary, Ari was deployed to Iraq. I was so afraid for him and needed something to keep my mind occupied. So, one night I found myself dreaming of pretty things – anything to keep my 58

mind off bomb threats. I started mocking up a wedding magazine cover on my little 13-inch PC. Fast-forward to today. Ari and I will celebrate our eighth wedding anniversary next month, have a bubbly three year old, another due in July and we are also adopting this year. I’ve been the Editor-in-Chief of Southern Weddings for seven years, founded the Making Things Happen Conference, do consulting for creative business owners, have a shop full of inspirational goodies, and I recently released my first book, Make It Happen: Surrender Your Fear, Take the Leap, Live On Purpose. While, at first glance, it may look like I do a lot of different things, to me they are simply different paintbrushes on the same canvas. At Southern Weddings, our mission is to inspire brides to focus on what matters: planning a meaningful beginning to married life. The wedding day is just the beginning of a much bigger picture. All I do comes from the same heart — encouraging others to spend their minutes here on this earth cultivating what lasts longer than us. 2. What’s a typical work day for you? Every day is completely different for me, which I love! The majority of my work is a desk job. I spend a lot of time answering emails. About .01% of my job entails glamorous things like photo shoots and wearing beautiful dresses for team shoots. Most people think owning a magazine is glamorous all the time and, while I am sincerely grateful for every aspect of what I do, the macupcakeMAG.com

While, at first glance, it may look like I do a lot of different things, to me they are simply different paintbrushes on the same canvas.

jority of my days are far from glamorous! My activities include being on the phone, doing consulting for small business owners, making editorial decisions with our creative team, creating new shop products and doing magazine layout with our Art Director, managing challenges that arise, doing all the financial planning and book keeping, speaking at conferences about authentic branding and the core of a solid business, motivating our amazing team, and -- among many other things -- replying to a whole lot of email. We work from the second floor of my home, so a typical work day also includes going downstairs to have lunch with my daughter Grace. 3. Let’s talk about Lara Casey Shop - what inspired you to create this online store? For us, creating a shop wasn’t a financial move — we wanted a way to inspire people more often than just once a year with a magazine. We wanted to create products that would solve problems in their lives and encourage them to make what matters happen. Our shop has grown significantly since we first launched a couple years ago. We’ve seen that initial goal come to life as thousands of women have been encouraged to live on purpose! cupcakeMAG.com

4. You recently wrote a book, Make It Happen. Tell us a little about your journey to make this happen. When did you decide you need to share your story on paper? I started the Making Things Happen conference seven years ago after being inundated with requests for business consulting and coaching advice. At first, it was a way to meet a great need I saw in the creative industry to help others make things happen. Over the years as my own heart and life have been changed, it has grown into far more. Now, the goal is to encourage people to make what matters happen. That may not mean “big” dreams in the traditional sense, but rather chasing after what lasts longer than us. We’ve now done the workshop over 45 times and seen thousands of fears met, leaps of faith taken, and new paths paved. The book, Make It Happen: Surrender Your Fear, Take the Leap, Live On Purpose, was born out of the many stories women have shared with me through the conference, my work, and speaking events. I wanted a way to hand women a collection of lessons I’ve learned and have learned from the many brave women I’ve encountered. Thomas Nelson publishers approached me about writing the book after they came across my yearly goal setting series that I run on my blog. The goal for the book and con61

ference is the same: help women live on purpose, using all the gifts they’ve been given to the fullest — in work, motherhood, marriage, and in their communities. 5. Now let’s down to business and how you truly have, made it happen. What are the biggest lessons you’ve learned since becoming such a creative entrepreneur? Failure is fertilizer. The times I’ve fallen flat on my face and have been humbles have been the greatest times of meaningful growth. Now, I welcome failure and trust that it’s going to refine me. Also, doing things God’s way always wins. To me, the Bible is the best business book you could ever read. 6. From Lara Casey Shop to Southern Weddings -- what keeps you inspired? Looking back at how different my life was several years ago! I used to chase “success” in the traditional sense — more money, followers, business, etc. I thought those things would bring me contentment and happiness. I was wrong. Money and business aren’t inherently bad things, but when they become the measuring stick for your worth, it’s time to put on the train brakes. Chasing elusive “perfection” ran me into the ground. So, what inspires me cupcakeMAG.com

daily is looking back at how much my life has changed over the last years as I slowly let go of the chase for perfection and started living on purpose for something bigger than me. Now I know that the impossible is possible when we focus on what matters. That inspires me to no end! It makes me want to work hard to help many live on purpose, too. 7. You aren’t just heading an amazing empire but your a mama too! We have to ask -- how do you do it all? In short, I stay focused on what matters and I rest. I used to work 24/7 until my marriage and life started to fall through the cracks. I had to learn to fight for my time by killing distractions (for instance, I don’t use social media or email after hours or on weekends so I can focus on my family instead of my phone); setting solid boundaries; working my tail off during business hours; and always taking breaks to go hug Grace (my daughter), stretch, pray, read scripture, or just take a deep breath. I don’t work on weekends anymore and it has made me so much more productive during the week. Also, I have a truly remarkable team that helps me keep everything together! I am no superwoman and I don’t do it all. I pray a lot and am surrounded by people who are just as passionate as I am about making what matters happen! 63

4 Legal Tools to protect your brand PLUS 4 Bonus Action Steps to Take Today By Kara Jensen Zitnick, Esq. Premier Legal Partner for Women Entrepreneurs Register Your Trademarks What are Trademarks: A trademark is a word, phrase, symbol or design, or a combination thereof, that identifies and distinguishes your goods or services from those of other businesses. Why are they Important: Trademark registration helps prevent others, from using your business name, symbol, certain designs, etc., without your permission and gives YOU ownership of your word, phrase, tagline and logos. Do it as soon as possible. Examples: We have seen profitable businesses have to change their business name, product name and all the associated marketing material for failing to properly protect their brand through registered trademarks. They essentially had to start over building their brand. Register Your Copyrights What are Copyrights: A copyright protects original works, such as writings, music, and works of art that have been created in a tangible form. Why it is Important: Copyright registrations help prevent others from copying your original works, without your permission. They may also help you stop someone who has already copied your work. Examples: We have countless examples of original work that our clients created being copied and sold as someone else’s work. Photographs, printables and other original artwork, for example, is frequently copied off client websites. Sending a Cease and Desist letter with a registered Copyright helps to stop the infringer faster than if you don’t have a registered copyright for your work. 68

Draft Important Contracts What contracts should be professionally drafted: client contracts, VA contracts, employee agreements, confidentialtiy agreements, certification programs, privacy policies for your website, terms and conditions, etc. Why it is Important: Well-drafted contracts protect both you and the other party by spelling out the terms of your working relationship in clear and understandable plain language. Examples: Most people think they have a good idea of what they’ve generally agreed to, but when disagreements arise, the courts will look at the contract to determine what is legally enforceable. A well-written contract can ensure your rights are protected by avoiding misunderstandings and clearly defining the parameters of the working relationship. Review Important Contracts What are important contracts: Any contracts you have with vendors, contractors, designers, landlords, clients and customers (e.g. leases, vendor agreements, joint ventures, book deals, etc.) Why a Review is Important: Most people assume they know the agreements they have with their vendors and clients, etc., but a review by an attorney or someone experienced with contracts will give you a professional perspective to ensure you know just what you’ve agreed to. Examples: Without a review, you may be surprised to learn that you have signed away very important rights (such as copyrights and royalties) that you never intended to give up, or have agreed to terms you didn’t would have a negative impact on your business. cupcakeMAG.com

So what can you do? 4 Bonus Action Steps you can take TODAY to start protecting your brand 1. Watermark the images you use online – images with a watermark are less likely to be used by someone else 2.

Periodically search online for similar business names, product names, etc, to keep yourself informed on what is happening in the marketplace and if there are any new businesses with names, products, etc similar to yours.

3. Keep good records of your products, when you created them, and your creative process. 4. If you find someone has either copied your work or is using your work without your permission, take a screenshot as proof of the infringement.

A BLISSFUL

NEST

REBEKAH DEMPSEY TAKES US

INSIDE HER BEAUTIFUL HOME I have always loved the feel of a well lived in home and that means kids running around and lots of chaos! My home is filled with the love of celebrating every day’s joys and time spent with family in a signature style of old pieces with a touch of modern flare. My style is definitely influenced by worn objects that are upcycled and mixed with more industrial pieces. There is something to be said for having a piece from your great grandparents and mixing it with something new. I have always had an obsession with textiles and paper pretties. Coming from an interior design background, it was a natural transition for me to start designing a modern luxury brand of stationery and home accessories that reflected this. I love mixing patterns and colors in unexpected combinations that my clients love but would have never thought to mix together. I believe every woman should have a signature style not only in their home but reflected in their daily life. I love creating signature paper and accessory suites to make a seamless transition of the two - just like our grandma’s did with that signature perfume and lipstick along with her monogrammed stationery! I want my daughter to grow up with this confidence in herself of her unique style and always see the beauty in every day. I want to inspire people to live a truly “blissful” life with signature style.

CREATING OUR HAPPY PLACE KIM FLORES PHOTOGRAPHY

Casi Densmore-Koon takes us inside her happy place; the master bedroom inside her home designed by interior designer, Danielle Oakly. Casi shares just how you can get the look and why it’s her favorite place in the house.

Simplify the Nightstand:

I always have a few of my favorite books on my nightstand. Jenny Cookies is one that never leaves my side. Notepads fill my top drawer as my best thoughts come when my head hits the pillow. I love how the dressers make for added storage but are the perfect nightstands. I love waking up seeing my home town framed as well as a pretty little floral arrangement. It’s the little things!

Dress-Up The Dressers:

For the dressers turned nightstands I wanted to dress-up the look so I purchased these 3-drawer dressers from Ikea and changed out the hardware to these gold knobs I found on Amazon. It immediately makes them look way more sophisticated.

Reading Nook:

Cozy corners are my favorite. After a long-day, sometimes I catchup on email or even a good book in my favorite spot. It’s a great place to find five-minutes peace when I’m lucky. EDITORS NOTE: While I’m on the East Coast and Danielle’s on the West Coast, she was able to create the perfect space for my family all online. Danielle offers e-design services that are beyond amazing. You’ll want to take advantage of them as soon as you stop reading. Danielle decorated this space from the ground up. This has become the prettiest room in the house and she created such a beautiful space that we enjoy daily. It is comfortable and functional and ‘just right’. Her work exceeded our expectations and she is beyond talented. I couldn’t have made this space come to life without her expertise and excellent taste. Visit her online at Danielle Oakley Interiors to see more of her work.

PRETTY IN PINK a shared space for two sisters is sure to make you swoon KIM FLORES PHOTOGRAPHY

cupcakeMAG Founder & Editor, Casi Densmore-Koon takes us inside her youngest girls happy place. Casi is sharing just how you can get the look too.

1. Bright-Colored Beds

Newport Cottages creates the most amazing, timeless pieces. We decided to place their Raspberry Bunk Beds side-by-side. They are the focal point of this room and we wanted to make them standout. Choosing a fun color really brings a lot of personality to a space!

2. Lasting Bedding

White, simple bedding is classic. Beddys Chic White bedding gave us the shabby chic look we wanted while still keeping the look modern yet cozy. Placing a quilt or throw at the bottom really completes the look. I absolutely love these adorable Flamingo Quilts from Madly Wish to place at the bottom of the beds for a pop of color against the white bedding.

3. Gallery Wall

Creating a gallery wall filled with inspiring quotes and pretty pictures is just perfect for a little girls space. It can grow with them too! This gallery was inspired a DIY Love canvas made by my girls & our amazing nanny, Kylie. I wanted to keep something sentimental on the wall so I choose to design the wall around the hand-painted canvas.

4. Under-the-Bed Storage

Make it pretty! Hid all the clutter in under-the-bed storage so your kids can easily pull it out and clean it up.

ALL THE HUES KIM FLORES PHOTOGRAPHY

Pops of color throughout our editor, Casi Densmore-Koon’s living room make this house a cozy home. But, she can’t take all the credit; Interior designer, Danielle Oakley helped create the space of her dreams.

STEAL THIS STYLE

1. Accessorize the Coffee Table: From your favorite books to the latest magazine, fill your coffee table with things you love. Cozy up your space with fresh flowers and a candle. Switch out decor pieces with each season for a change of style. 2. Utilize the Furniture: Create extra spacing with benches

close to the coffee table to create a multi-functional place for pretty things as well as extra seating. You’ll kids will love to pull them up to the table to color.

3. Extra Storage: Choose pieces that will work for your family.

A media cabinet that works for ample amount of hidden toy storage is the best bet when you have kids constantly playing in your living room.

4. Oh, The Bar Cart: It doesn’t have to be for cocktails. It works great to store those extra blankets you’ll need when it comes time to Sundays on the couch. 5. Forget Matchy-Matchy: Find pieces you love and make it work. It doesn’t all need to match. it doesn’t all need to be the same print, color, or pattern. You just need to love it! Look for pieces that show-off your personality so you’ll love spending time in your home.
