Hicks wins Cumberland spelling bee

Farm Bureau expanding scholarship program

Robbie Hicks, a seventh grade student at Cumberland Middle School, won the Cumberland County Public Schools Spelling Bee, which was held on Feb. 6. He is the son of Shirley Hicks. He competed against other grade level winners from grades 2 through 8 and successfully spelled “imperious” to win. Runner-up was Dylan Myers, a fourth grader. His parents are Roger and Misty Myers. Other grade level winners included Natalie Sullivan, first grade; Daniel Murrill, second grade; Corey Frye, third Hicks grade; Mya JohnsonTaylor, fifth grade; Annabelle Williamson, sixth grade; and Kavon Foster, eighth grade. Superintendent Amy Griffin noted, “We are very proud of all the participants!” Robbie received a MerriamWebster’s dictionary, courtesy of Scripps National Spelling Bee and the Richmond Times-Dispatch. He advanced to the regional competition, which was held on March 8 at the Library of Virginia. The winner of the Regional Spelling Bee received a $1,500 scholarship and an allexpenses-paid family trip to the 2014 Scripps National Spelling Bee. The Scripps National Spelling Bee is the nation’s largest and longest-running educational promotion and is sponsored by the E.W. Scripps Company. see Spelling bee > 3

ince 2003, the Cumberland County Farm Bureau has budgeted funds for a Scholarship Program, which stemmed from the organization’s acknowledgement of the need for continued education and technical training in the agricultural community. Funds originally were directed only to students and individuals interested in furthering their education or skills in agriculture. During the past 12 years, about
