PITTSBURGH

CULTURAL

TRUST The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust (the Cultural Trust) was established in 1984 to help revitalize the Pittsburgh region through the creation and ongoing development of the Downtown Pittsburgh Cultural District. The Cultural Trust is: • a performing arts presenter • a theater/galleries owner/operator • a catalyst for Cultural District development • a visual arts exhibitor • an arts collaborator

WELCOME

THANKS TO THE MANY THOUSANDS OF SUPPORTERS,

2011 was another great year in the Cultural District. Your generous contributions were revealed in many ways— crowds entering a District theater, casually strolling at a Gallery Crawl, welcoming summer at Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival and ushering in a new year at Highmark First Night®. Throughout the year, your patronage and support created lasting impressions in the Cultural District.

J. Kevin McMahon, President and CEO, Pittsburgh Cultural Trust

The Cultural Trust extends its gratitude to the Allegheny Regional Asset District, The Benter Foundation, Citizens Bank, Cohen & Grigsby, Colcom Foundation, Dollar Bank, Eden Hall Foundation, First Commonwealth, Giant Eagle, The Heinz Endowments, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, Laurel Foundation, The Legal Society, Richard King Mellon Foundation, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, PNC Foundation and an Anonymous Donor, among many others, for their generous financial support. It was a momentous year for Cultural Trust programming. Pittsburgh International Children’s Festival celebrated 25 years of presenting exceptional theater and visual arts for the cultural enrichment of families. The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra returned to Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival for an outstanding free performance before 15,000 festival attendees. Pittsburgh Dance Council partnered with the August Wilson Center to present Heidi Latsky’s GIMP Project in celebration of the FISA Foundation’s Centennial. The Cultural Trust launched the Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival with 50 live performances at 28 venues throughout the District. Our public art installation Cell Phone Disco was

recognized by Public Art Network’s prestigious Year in Review and took first place in the Art+Tech Category of the Pittsburgh Technology Council’s DATA Awards. The Cultural Trust is energized by the strong show of support in 2011. Our organization raised $8.7 million, including an annual giving increase of 11% compared to 2010. We received one of the largest gifts in the Cultural Trust’s history— $5 million from Dietrich Charitable Trusts in honor of the late businessman, scholar, philanthropist and longtime advisor, William S. Dietrich II. Twenty-two major area law firms joined together to form The Legal Society to raise substantive funds for the Cultural Trust. The 10,000-Member Initiative, towards which the Cultural Trust gained more than 3,000 members in 2011, contributed to a 34% increase in Cultural Trust memberships. We launched TrustArts.org to make it easier to find Cultural Trust events of interest, purchase tickets and plan for a pleasurable experience in the Cultural District. Visitors can view seating in relation to the stage before purchasing tickets and also print tickets when and where it is most convenient. The next time you visit the Cultural District or TrustArts.org, look around and take pride in knowing that your support and patronage make everything we do in the Cultural District possible. Thank you,

J. Kevin McMahon President and CEO Pittsburgh Cultural Trust

Pittsburgh Dance Council partners with the August Wilson Center to present Heidi Latsky’s GIMP Project in celebration of the FISA Foundation’s Centennial. The Cultural Trust’s inaugural Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival fills the Cultural District with 50 live performances and 150 musicians at 28 venues. Cell Phone Disco is nationally recognized in the Public Art Network’s prestigious Year in Review and takes first place in the Art+Tech Category of the Pittsburgh Techlology Council’s 2011 DATA Awards. Wood Street Galleries showcases the best in contemporary Icelandic art with the exhibit Long Are The Days, Short Are The Nights.

DEVELOPMENT

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust receives $5 million from Dietrich Charitable Trusts, one of the most significant gifts in the Cultural Trust’s history. The gift establishes The Dietrich Family Performance & Visual Art Fund in honor of the late businessman, scholar, philanthropist and longtime Cultural Trust volunteer advisor, Mr. William S. Dietrich II.

In support of the Cultural Trust’s programming and operations, the Cultural Trust raises $8.7 million, a significant annual fund increase of nearly $700,000 (or 11%) over 2010.

REAL ESTATE

The launch of the 10,000Member Initiative increases Trust memberships by 34% in 2011. Special thanks to the Richard King Mellon Foundation for providing a dollar for dollar match for all new/increased support.

Several new businesses open in the Cultural District, including Hobo Thrift Store at 951 Liberty Avenue, Awesome Books at 929 Liberty Avenue, Go Pretzel at 807 Liberty Avenue, Taste of Dahntahn at 535 Liberty Avenue, Fraley’s Robot Repair at 210 Sixth Street and Burgheoisie at 208 Sixth Street.

The Cultural Trust announces the Legal Society, a collective of major area law firms whose goal is to raise $1,200,000 in support of the Cultural Trust over a five-year period. Highmark First Night® Pittsburgh is the best attended to date thanks to increased support from Presenting Sponsor Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield. The Arts Day of Giving, sponsored by the Pittsburgh Foundation, raises $117,000 for the Cultural Trust. A record 93% of the Cultural Trust’s staff contributed to the annual staff campaign.

The gastropub Meat & Potatoes opens in Theater Square and quickly establishes itself as a Cultural District hot spot for great food, artisan cocktails and the place to be seen.

Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre moves into new Cultural District performance space at the Cultural Trust’s 937 Liberty Avenue property, alongside of the innovative performance arts company Bricolage. ToonSeum, one of the nation’s only museums dedicated to the art of cartooning, expands its Cultural Trust exhibit, events and office space at 945 Liberty Avenue. The Cultural Trust demolishes its 801 Penn Avenue property to clear the way for future development in the Cultural District. In the interim, the lot creates eight additional parking spaces and a small green space.

The Cultural Trust unveils a sustainability framework to guide real estate planning, development and management in the Cultural District. The expansion of Blush, a downtown adult entertainment complex, is denied due to the joint efforts of the Cultural Trust and Pittsburgh Public Schools.

The Cultural Trust is active with the Performing Arts Centers Conference (PACC), an industry consortium representing leading performing arts centers in the U.S., U.K., Canada and Australia. The Cultural Trust hosts PACC’s marketing consortium during the 2011 Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival.

A.

MARKETING SHARED SERVICES

The Cultural Trust receives a Smart Solution Spotlight Award from the International Transportation Society of America for its ParkPGH program, the nation’s first real-time parking application to predict the availability of future garage parking. ParkPGH is also voted Pittsburgh Magazine’s “Best App” by its readers. To increase awareness of its programs and mission, the Cultural Trust redesigns and launches the robust TrustArts.org. In coordination with a Cultural District-wide web initiative, TrustArts.org provides select-your-own seat, seat views, and printat-home ticket technology.

A department of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust formed in 2000, Shared Services has realized cumulative savings and cost avoidance for the seven Cultural District resident organizations in excess of $8.6 million.
