STUDENT RUN FUNDRAISER FOR RAINBOW CHEER TEAM

A SALUTE TO THE POESTENKILL AMBULANCE SQUAD & VOLUNTEERS Letter to the Editor: It was with both sadness and great appreciation that I read Brian Teal’s letter stating that the Poestenkill Ambulance Squad and its members would no longer be providing services. What a loss to the community! That letter, however, gives my husband and me pause to think back to the multiple times that they were there when we needed them. In 1964 they rendered us assistance that today would be unimaginable! Only three months after we’d moved to Poestenkill, two members drove the ambulance to Idlewild Airport (now JFK) and picked up my father-in-law who was flying from Florida, essentially to die here with family. That was truly a service of dedication, commitment, and support! Squad members have provided life-saving assistance to my husband on more than one occasion; the most recent being when he broke his neck. At the time, we had no idea of the seriousness of his fall, and it was Mr. Teal, on call that evening, who took every precaution in moving him. We shall always be indebted to Brian and his crew for their actions! This occurred in the winter of 2011, the year of unrelenting snows storms! Because of road conditions and related safety issues, the ambulance transported my husband back home after his prolonged stay in the hospital. We were so grateful to the members of the squad who once again came to our rescue! There were three other occasions during which the ambulance transported members of our family during life and death situations. In addition, the squad loaned us medical equipment many times over the years—items ranging from a hospital bed (in the pre-Hospice era!) to a shower chair. For all that I have mentioned, as well as for thousands of other calls they have made, we salute the Poestenkill Ambulance Squad and all its volunteers for the services they have provided. It has always been with courtesy, concern, and professionalism that they have showed up at our door, and I’m sure many, many others would ditto this! Thus, sorrow that it will no longer be able to provide such services, but with gratefulness to all those who have been there for the community for so long! ~ Janice G. Nine Year old Mackenzie Anslow is a student at St. Jude’s School in Wynantskill. In her free time, she is a painter at LUV 2 PAINT in Wynantskill and a competitive dancer for CNY Storm Cheer and Dance in Albany. Competitive cheer can be costly with monthly tuition, competition fees and travel. One of the teams in her organization is the Rainbows. This team is made up of cheerleaders who have some type of special need. Because these athletes face challenges each day and many have excessive medical costs, the Rainbows Team is funded by donations. This team means so much to Mackenzie, as she says, “They work harder than anyone I know!” So this year Mackenzie is doing a fundraiser. She painted a beautiful painting and is raffling it off at the end of the month and ALL of the money raised will be donated to the special needs team. Tickets are $5.00 each or 3 for $10.00 Anyone who is interested in purchasing tickets may contact Mackenzie at kuhnslowpartyof7@gmail.com

BENEFIT BUFFET BREAKFAST FOR SETH KING

The Pastor’s Pen ~Rev. Dr. Robert Loesch Justice and Mercy and Faith During our bountiful summer season, I often reflect about plants growing in the Holy Land. One of my favorite sights in the Holy Land are the tall stands of cypress and cedar trees in many gardens of private homes as well as on public lands. The cypress, plane and pine trees were also bountiful in the mountains of Lebanon and were used in the building of King Solomon’s Temple in Jerusalem. (I Kings 9:11). Cypress wood is fragrant and durable. It was used by the Egyptians to make sarcophagi and by the Greeks for statues of their gods. Likewise, cedar has been prized for similar qualities, especially its fragrance. It was fitting that when Solomon built a great temple to honor God, he would choose woods known for their beauty, fragrance, and long lasting strength. Since ancient times, God’s creation has been seen as a reflection of God’s glory and majesty. The psalmist often used the works of nature to symbolize this glory. In Psalm 96:12, he wrote “...let the field exult, and everything in it. Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy before the Lord.” As I walked through the marketplace in the old city of Jerusalem, I could see many merchants selling the herbs and spices mentioned by Jesus: “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith.” (Matthew 23:23) Mint, dill and cummin still grow wild throughout the Holy Land. There the most common mint, horsemint, grows in damp settings, often alongside streams and bodies of water. Mint was used both as seasoning for food and as medicine with its refreshing aroma and taste. Dill was used as an herb, its seeds and leaves useful as seasoning and for medicinal purposes. Cummin is a member of the carrot family, with small white flowers and leaves similar to fennel. Although the Jews of Jesus’ time were not required to give a tithe of these herbs, Jesus complained that the scribes and Pharisees paid more attention to the minor details in their literal, strict observances than to the more important aspects of the law, such as justice and mercy and faith. Likewise, in our daily lives we often pay more attention to minor matters and neglect the more important and critical issues of our faith.

On Saturday, August 16th, from 8:00 - 11:00am the Carner, Etman, Smith V.F.W. Post 6340 and the Grafton Volunteer Fire Department and Ladies Auxiliary is having a fundraiser breakfast at the Grafton VFW - Fire Hall on South Road (County Route 85) Grafton, NY. He immediately entered the United States Air Force where he trained with the Security Forces. Seth’s first post was Elmendorf, Alaska, and his second post, Baltimore, Maryland at Bethesda. He served in Iraqi Freedom and is a member of the Carner, Etman, Smith V.F.W. Post 6340. Seth is an Eagle Scout from Brunswick Troop 537. After leaving the military, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2009 where he underwent chemotherapy. He was in remission for four years. In December of 2013 he went for a routine physical and the doctors confirmed the lymphoma had returned. He completed another round of chemotherapy; however it is not enough—he is also facing a bone marrow transplant. Although his medical insurance covers his treatments thanks to the Veterans Administration, he will be leaving for Seattle, WA August 13th for no less the 3 months of testing, treatment and the transplant. Seth’s family is facing additional travel and other unforeseen medical related expenses. Donations can be deposited at any Pioneer Bank branch payable to: Seth King Benefit Account or mailed to: Carner, Etman, Smith V.F.W. Post 6340, PO Box 361, Grafton, NY 12082.

LOCALS NAMED to SPRING 2014 DEAN’S LIST at the COLLEGE of SAINT ROSE

FUEL YOUR COMMUNITY IMPACTS THOUSANDS OF LIVES An 11-state partnership in June between the American Red Cross and energy provider Suburban Propane collected roughly 750 blood donations and will potentially impact thousands of lives. The dedication and passion of Suburban Propane is a shining example of support on which the Red Cross relies every day to accomplish its lifesaving mission. The “Fuel Your Community” campaign aimed to raise awareness among Suburban Propane employees, customers and the population as a whole about the need for donated blood, which is essential for patient care at area hospitals. The Red Cross is facing a looming blood shortage this summer, with fewer blood donors than expected. The Red Cross has an urgent need for all blood types and platelets to help prevent a shortage. Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs a blood transfusion, and every day the Red Cross must collect 15,000 donations to meet the needs of patients. To learn more about blood donation or find a blood donation opportunity, please call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org.

On August 26th, at 6 pm, Filmmaker Bruce Kennedy will show excerpts of his film about the 19th century farmer’s rebellion in Nassau and other rural areas of upstate New York. Kennedy will lead a discussion about how the “Anti-Rent War” of the 1840s holds lessons for today. The event is at 6:00 pm on Tues., Aug. 26, in the Parish Hall of St. Mary’s Church, Nassau, NY. Kennedy, born in Troy, is a descendant of the rebellion’s main leader, “Big Thunder.” In 2013, he showed rough-cut film versions of “Righteous Rebellion,” which led the filmmaker to conduct further research into several unanswered questions and to follow new research leads. He invites all with an interest in this topic to exploring local history at the discussion and film event in Nassau on August 26th at the Parish Hall of St. Mary’s Church, Nassau, NY. To reserve a seat, call 518-766-2715, or email, director@nassaufreelibrary.org. www.nassaufreelibrary.org.

GRAFTON LAKES STATE PARK TO HOLD DANCE IN THE PARK EDIBLE WEDDING FAVORS MAKE A FINE CHOICE A token of appreciation for guests is requisite at wedding receptions. Wedding favors enable attendees to walk away from the event with a memento and also a small thank you for their participation and celebration of this momentous event. Brides- and grooms-to-be have different ideas when it comes to wedding favors. Guests have their own opinions, too. As customs and trends change, so do the options in wedding favors. In the past, wedding favors were not much different from the items offered today, and not every guest was privy to a takehome trinket. In the 16th century, wedding favors were a sign of extravagance and showed off the family’s wealth to the guests. Only rich and prominent people during those times could afford and provide sophisticated gifts to their guests. Some favors symbolized luck, and sharing them with guests ensured good luck to all as well. Almonds were common favors because they symbolized fertility, health, happiness, wealth, and longevity. Bonbonnieres were once a popular wedding favor. A bonbonniere is a small, decorative box made of porcelain, crystal or gold. It is embellished with colorful and precious gems. Inside the box houses a sweet delicacy, often called a bonbon. In modern times, many couples are returning to the tradition of giving bonbonnieres or other edible favors as their wedding celebration thank-yous. Edible favors are often economical and guests tend to appreciate them. After all, guests have to find a nook in their homes in which to house an engraved ice cream scooper or yet another small statuette. Edible gifts can be as varied as a person desires. Candy-coated almonds are still popular, but many couples have expanded their choices and have created new trends in favors. For those couples seeking a unique edible favor for the wedding, here are some suggestions. * Cake or brownie pops: Food on a stick has long been a favorite of many, but the concept has been taken to new heights with the creation of cake pops. These are small balls of cake or brownie that are made from cake crumbs and frosting. The balls are covered in candy melts or chocolate and served on a stick. Chocolate artists can transform ordinary cake pops into works of art with intricate piping designs on the hard, outer shell. Clear cello bags and decorative ribbon may be all that’s necessary for a classic wrapping. * Cookies: Pastry arts continue to be popular favors for any occasion. Many bakeries offer intricately designed and decorated cookies that can pertain to any theme. Think about a wedding couple or a set of rings as the cookie of choice for a wedding favor. Most cookies last 2 to 3 weeks, so they can be purchased in advance. * Petit fours: These bite-sized pastries lend themselves well to wedding favors. They can easily be paired and put in small boxes as take-home treats. Some bakeries create petit fours on demand. If not, petit fours can be purchased through online vendors. * Chocolate: Gourmet chocolate remains a popular edible favor. Choose among truffles, caramels, chocolatecovered pretzels, or any favorite treat. Depending on the chocolatier, favors may come pre-boxed and wrapped. * Seasonal treats: If a wedding coincides with a particular season or holiday, favors can be coordinated as well. Think caramel-covered apples for fall parties, chocolate bunnies for spring events, spiced cake bars for the winter holidays or lemon tarts for summer weddings.

purrfect kitty

PLEASE ADOPT ME!

of the month I’m Zinnia, a sleek, all-black female kitty. According to our vet, I’m about 3 years old. I was a mom cat, but all my kittens got adopted so now it’s my turn to look for a home. I know mom cats and black cats aren’t as quick to get homes, but I’m young & hopeful, so please hear me out! I was not a social kitty when I came to the rescue, but they’ve been working on me. And I see how the other kitties like all the attention, so now I’ve started to enjoy being petted too. I’m quite social with other kitties & could be a good friend to a pet you already have. I would love a cozy spot in your house where I could retreat for awhile. You can probably tell from what I’ve said that I’m a bit tentative. I need a patient person to give me some time to come around. As with all Purrfect Companion kitties, Zinnia is up-to-date on routine shots, house trained and neutered or spayed. For more information on Zinnia, please contact the following Purrfect Companions’ representative: Maryann at 331-2221 or at kitties.purrfectcompanions@yahoo.com. Please use this phone number only for adoption purposes! Purrfect Companions is a non-profit, all volunteer rescue organization. Our adoption clinics are held 12:30-4:00 most Sundays and the second Saturday of the month at Pet Supplies Plus, 1235 Western Ave in University Plaza, Albany, NY.

Join us for a one-hour Volunteer Opportunities Information Session at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, August 25th, at Faith Lutheran Church, 50 Leversee Road, Troy. Call 274-8526 to reserve a space. There is also a need for math tutors and for tutors to work with incarcerated learners in Rensselaer County Jail. Literacy Volunteers welcomes all kinds of volunteers, from tutors to administrative helpers and event planners. As a volunteer, you can develop new skills, make friends, and see how your efforts make a difference in your community. BACK-TO-SCHOOL TAX BREAKS Alexandria, VA – Parents and students flock to stores and online this time of year as classrooms loom again. As you back-to-school shop and sort through bookbags, No. 2 pencils and laptops, also keep your tax situation in mind. Deductions for school supplies may be few and far between but the National Society of Accountants (NSA) reminds you that many financial aspects of education can still significantly cut your tax bill. Can I Deduct Protractors? Few back-to-school supplies qualify as deductions (which trim the amount of your income that’s subject to tax and generally cuts the tax you may have to pay). You can’t deduct the cost of school supplies for grades K-12, nor are there tax credits for back-toschool purchases. School uniforms aren’t deductible (even if required) and the cost of private or parochial school tuition isn’t deductible, either. If you can separate the educational costs from the child care component of private school tuition, those costs may be deductible for children up to the age of 13. Some good news: This time of year many states offer sales-tax holidays on school supplies, as well as on clothing, shoes and electronics. Visithttp://www.taxadmin.org/ to see when your state has its next sales-tax holiday and what items qualify. If you’re a teacher, you do likely qualify for a back-to-school Educator Expense Deduction, which allows you to take a $250 deduction for such classroom expenses as books, paper, crayons and printer ink.

Higher Ed Tax Breaks Though moving expenses for college aren’t deductible, either, the biggest deductions and credits go to those who pay for college. Student Loan Interest: You can deduct up to $2,500 for interest on a student loan used for higher education. The deduction gradually shrinks if your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI, or what you declare as income after standard deductions on your tax return) falls within a certain range. Tuition and Fees: This deduction can reduce your taxable income by up to $4,000 and applies to qualified expenses for higher education for an eligible student. You can’t claim this deduction if you file your return as Married Filing Separately or if another person can claim you as a dependent. Your MAGI also can’t exceed $80,000 ($160,000 if you file a joint return). (“Qualified expenses” are amounts you pay for tuition, fees and other costs directly related to enrollment or attendance at an eligible educational institution. Eligible expenses also include required student activity fees, among others, but do not include room and board, insurance, student health fees or transportation, among other expenses.) If you need help figuring education deductions or tax credits, you can find a qualified tax preparer in your area on the NSA website at www.nsacct.org. Click on “Find a Professional” or call 800-966-6679.

In August, we were a sponsor at the annual “Taste of Sand Lake” celebration at the beautiful Crooked Lake House held by the Sand Lake Center for the Arts. In September, the SLBA will host its 4th annual Sand Lake town-wide garage sale on Sept. 13th and 14th. It’s an opportunity to give back to the town by providing free advertising for town residents’ sales and a vendor corral for those who want to shop or sell. It also brings potential visitors from all over the Capital District to our beautiful town. On Tuesday, Oct. 21st, we welcome both current and potential members for a “Meet and Greet.” Join us for hors d’oeuvres upstairs at the Lakeview in Averill Park, as we hear about Rensselaer County plans.
