TRIO OF EXCELLENCE

VALE

from the chairman DAVID OLSSON

Welcome to this edition of our regular Superstar magazine. 2017 is already slipping away and Easter fast approaches. I sincerely hope this year has been a happy one for you thus far. I am pleased to report that our Club trading results are pleasing in an economic environment which continues to be hard to predict. At this stage we are tracking to budget and our subsidiary businesses are also reasonably on track. Our debt levels are again better than projected, however we are about to embark on some hotel works which will slightly increase our debt for about twelve months. For all that we remain financially sound, more than meeting our debt targets. More on the hotel works shortly. Our new food outlets are all trading extremely well and the additional table spaces across the back of the Club are proving to be very popular – we even have an alfresco dining area for those who enjoy partaking of their meals outdoors. The whole look of the new areas is sensational. Kyūbi has hit the right note with food lovers and Embers Charcoal Kitchen has settled down with a growing clientele singing its praises. Even the Food Court is attracting larger numbers able to be accommodated in the expanded dining space. To bring all outlets up to our high standard we are currently looking into a refresh of Café Samba – more news on that as we progress. As mentioned above we are about to commence extensions to our hotel, including the addition of 50 odd rooms, the renovation of the hotel conference rooms and the addition of function space. Demand

for rooms at Rydges had reached a level whereby the numbers for expansion stacked up nicely. I am sure you will be very pleased with the new look which is scheduled to be completed by a little after Christmas this year. Meanwhile at the Golf Club the course is looking as good as it has for a long time and there have been plenty of favourable comments from members and social players alike. Congratulations to the Course Superintendent and his staff who have had to work in some extreme weather conditions of late. The dining experience in the Golf Club has reached a level where we are looking at ways to increase available seating options. Feedback has been consistently positive and our chef is attracting much praise from Club regulars and guests who are happy with the range and quality of food offerings. Having eaten there regularly myself I can highly recommend it to you. I have mentioned previously that the Board, as it strives for best practice levels of governance, has embarked on a process to establish a Board Charter. The intention here is to formalise a broad governance structure for the conduct of Board actions and indeed for the actions of Board members themselves. I can report that we have a final draft of our Charter and there only remains some fine tuning before formal adoption. The Charter covers such things as member behaviour, training requirements and meeting conduct and is another step in our goal of being a world class Corporate Governance enterprise. On a lighter note the new school year is well under way now and I wish all associated with our schools all the best for the year. This of course includes parents and the students themselves as well as teachers and administrators. As always our club will again strive to give our schools all the support we can. In closing, once again thank you to members for your loyal support and I trust you continue to enjoy the benefits provided by your King of Clubs. I’d like to wish all members all the best for the rest of the year and I sincerely hope we continue to prosper in the face of lingering challenges for the industry.

Club Reports

FROM tHE GENERAL MANAGER MICHAEL LAVORATO

A warm welcome to this Autumn/Winter edition of Superstar Magazine. It’s been a record summer when it comes to temperatures and I know the Club has been a haven of comfort for many patrons trying to escape the heat. 2017 is certainly well and truly with us as Easter and the cooler months of Autumn and Winter beckon. As always Club members have been enjoying a great variety of promotions, special events, membership offers and entertainment to suit all ages and in this edition of Superstar there is loads of information to keep you busy and satisfied, no matter what your taste. Regular patrons will no doubt have stumbled across our new food outlets Embers Charcoal Kitchen and Kyubi Modern Asian Dining. I am very pleased at the enthusiastic and positive feedback both of these outlets have created amongst our members as well as the wider food community. Kyubi Modern Asian Dining in particular seems to have met the market expectations for those looking for a unique take of Asian cuisine. The highly respected Dimmi website which tracks the feedback from verified reviewers has Kyubi at a score of 8.8 across Food, Service, Value and Ambiance. This score places Kyubi amongst the most popular and successful restaurants in Sydney – but can be experienced at significantly less expensive pricing. If you enjoy food and you haven’t yet tried Kyubi then I guarantee you are missing out on something very special. Elsewhere in this edition of Superstar you will enjoy reading a profile of Peter Sheppard who has recently been employed by the Club in a strategic role to further enhance the Club’s food offerings across all of our venues. I am sure you will enjoy reading about Peter and I am thrilled that we have Peter on board as part of the King of Clubs team. Shortly work will commence on the expansion of our Rydges Hotel. The spectacular success of the Hotel business has exceeded our expectations and the extremely high occupancy rates and the excellent patronage of the Otis Restaurant Bar and Grill has convinced the Board and Management to approve the addition of 38 rooms and an expansion of the meeting and conference space. On completion in June 2018 Rydges Campbelltown will undoubtedly be one of Sydney’s most successful and beautiful suburban Hotels. I am excited and looking forward to celebrating the Italian Culture in what promises to be one of our most exciting promotions “A Taste of Italy”. You will read more about it elsewhere in this edition. In the meantime I hope to see you soon at a show, at one of our great dining offerings at any of our venues, or just enjoying a quite drink in the Club. Until then Ciao for now.

FROM tHE WELFARE director ALAN SCOTT

We were saddened to learn that Foundation Director, Fred Borg passed away on 20 December 2016 after a short illness. R.I.P Fred. We extend our sincere sympathy to his wife, Maria, his children and all of his family. Fred was a Board Member from 1966-1970 and again from 1971-1976. He was a Life Member of the Club, holding badge number 73. Fred was a well known Campbelltown Councillor and was on many Charity Fundraising Committees, most significantly the 24 Hour Fight Against Cancer which he championed for many years. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of Valerie Meehan who passed away on 25 November 2016. Val was a well known Club Member and also a Foundation Member holding Badge 25. Norm Sharpless, a former Club Manager from 1972-1977, entered eternal life on 6 January this year. Norm was a long time local resident until moving down the South Coast where he passed away. A former long time employee, Ross Fitzpatrick, who greeted Members at the door for many years passed away in February at age 97. Ross was also involved in the Sports Council at the Club for many years. R.I.P Ross. Our thoughts and prayers are also with the families of Members who have passed away recently. ` The Vale list appears on page 46 of this edition of Superstar. May they rest in peace. On a happier note, congratulations and best wishes are extended to Kerry Hooton and Lorraine Brophy who announced their engagement on Christmas Day. Members Kevin and Barbara Nott celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary back in January and we congratulate them on this memorable achievement. Mrs Anne Sullivan celebrated a significant birthday on 9 February and we wish Anne a very Happy 90th Birthday. Club Member Robyn Walsh turned 70 on 2 February and celebrated her birthday with family at Rydges. Congratulations Robyn. We also have three very special staff Members who recently celebrated 30 Years’ service at the Club. Congratulations to Diana Lawrence, Kevin Young and Olive Lamond. These staff have witnessed and participated in the evolution of the Club over three decades. They have a vast amount of experience and stories to tell and some of these are shared elsewhere in this edition. Should any Member have an announcement or significant achievement they would like to share for the next edition of Superstar, please feel free to leave details at the Club Reception. As we approach the Easter Season, I wish all Members a safe, happy and blessed Easter and look forward to seeing you around the Club over the coming months.

We’re changing the way we do food INTRODUCING PETER SHEPPARD Campbelltown Catholic Club is changing the way it looks at food. Kyūbi and Embers are just the beginning of our journey, and award-winning master chef Peter Sheppard will be guiding our way. Peter has just joined the Club as Director of Culinary Development, with the aim of making our already great food outlets even better. Club CEO Michael Lavorato said in the era of reality TV food shows and more sophisticated dining options, the Club was meeting the challenge taste buds first. “We are very fortunate that Peter has joined our team in this strategic role, overseeing all our food venues across all of our outlets, including the Golf Club and Rydges Hotel, and elevating the food to meet the ever-increasing expectations of patrons,” he said. “We look forward to him guiding us over the next few years.” Peter came to the club via the celebrated Caveau and MoChi restaurants in Wollongong, the winner of many coveted Good Food Guide Chef Hats. We thought you might like to get to know him better with this Q&A session: How long have you been a chef and why did you decide to pursue this career? I entered my first cooking competition when I was 11 but I was a bit later coming to the industry than some. I actually did a couple of years of an engineering degree before deciding to follow my passion for fine food. My parents are foodies and we travelled a lot when I was a kid, so good food was always a part of my life. I’ve been a chef for 20 years now. Oooh travel sounds exciting! Where did your travels take you? I lived in England until I was 11, then we moved to Australia. But we also spent 6 months in the US, 6 months in France and a year in Japan. I was the only English speaking person in my Japanese school so it was a lonely year, but the food was great and to this day I love Japanese food and the modern fusion of Asian and Western cuisine. Can you explain your food philosophy? Great food doesn’t need smoke and mirrors or magic tricks. Quality ingredients, classic techniques, and a balance of textures and flavours are what makes a memorable dish. I don’t follow fads, don’t take short cuts and I like to put value on the plate. Good value doesn’t always mean the cheapest

– if you are using local produce that has been sourced ethically it will always cost a bit more than an inferior, frozen, imported product… But it is worth it. What is your favourite Kyubi dish? At the moment I am loving the king crab legs. They are a great product, really meaty and the blackbean sauce is great with them. I always recommend the tasting menu at Kyubi – it gives people a wide range of dishes to try, in just the right quantity for their table. What is the best part of your new job? I love the mentoring part of this job. I have always enjoyed teaching and in my last restaurant, Caveau, we held monthly cookery schools. I’m enjoying working with our chefs and service staff to enhance our customer’s experience, and I’d like to do some more cookery schools & cooking demonstrations here at the Club, and in some of our local schools… Stay tuned! Why should people try Kyūbi? The Club has gone to great lengths to bring this amazing venue to Campbelltown so I hope people will come and try it. The room itself is spectacular, the food is fantastic and so is the service. In Sydney & Melbourne people are literally queuing out the door to eat this style of food (at restaurants such as Golden Century, Mr Wong & Chin Chin) and at twice the price. What’s your next project? We have just launched the new menu at Aquafit and are currently reworking the menu at Café Samba, so our customers can look forward to exciting new changes soon! You’ve been working with high school students in Wollongong for years. Can we expect the same with local students? It’s definitely something I’m going to be looking into. Mentoring club staff is important and really rewarding, but talking to the next generation of chefs and diners is too. We’ve got to nurture that next generation of people and provide them with opportunities, and a vision of how they are going to get where they want to go. At what point in the kitchen do you think ‘I’m in over my head’. You can’t get over-confident. There is often a half hour period on a busy night where you think ‘Will we get through the night?’ A little bit of panic is good, it keeps you on your toes You have the title Director of culinary development for all venues. What will that mean to club patrons? Our aim is to provide great quality food and excellent value to club patrons. With so many venues we believe that there should be something to suit everyone’s taste and budget.

TIMES ARE A CHANGING If legendary author Ernest Hemingway came back to life and walked into a NSW bar, he’d probably order a ‘neat whisky’ - one of his favourite drinks. But even the great Hemingway would be refused. Like it or not, we now live in the era where Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) Legislation impacts on us all.

We are finding that many older patrons are not aware of RSA rules and regulations and the implications it holds for them. As an example if you are identified displaying signs of intoxication we are required by law to ask you to leave the premises. While that sounds perfectly reasonable the devil is in the detail.

RSA legislation and the initiatives that go with it are changing community expectations and how we enjoy our favourite beverage.

Signs of intoxication listed in the legislation are very broad and subjective. They include everything from being loud or boisterous, exuberant or over friendly.

Spirits such as Whiskey and Scotch aren’t served ‘neat’ anymore - only ‘on the rocks’, as the ice cubes slow down people’s alcohol intake.

In order to make an accurate assessment we have a dedicated security team who constantly engage and interact with patrons throughout the Club.

Shots and high alcohol volume cocktails are no longer served in most licenced venues.

They’re not there to ruin your night or cramp your style in fact it’s the complete opposite. Their role ensures all Members can continue to enjoy the Club facilities in a safe and friendly environment

While much of the RSA Legislation is targeted at addressing binge drinking amongst youth the laws apply to one and all.

The stakes for licenced premises who flirt RSA laws are extremely high and rightly so.

If you are found to have allowed intoxication on premises there are hefty fines, special conditions can be imposed and ultimately loss of your liquor licence. So next time you’re enjoying a night out at the Club and one of our team says hello don’t be taken aback. We’re all in this together.

WELCOME NEW DIRECTOR ANDREW STAPLETON The truth is, it’s hard to hold anything against Andrew because he’s a nice, easygoing bloke with a good sense of humour and we welcome him as the latest addition to Campbelltown Catholic Club’s Board of Directors. Not that Andrew is a newcomer. He’s been part of our Macarthur region for almost 30 years, active in community and sporting life. He is the Regional General Manager Commercial Banking, Metro South, with Westpac Banking Corporation. In fact, he was named 2016 Westpac CEO Commercial Banker of the Year.

Andrew Stapleton is a banker – but don’t hold that against him. He’s also a die-hard Parramatta Eels fan – but don’t hold that against him. And he was raised in Sutherland Shire – but don’t hold that against him.

16

But his down-to-earth manner doesn’t fit the aloof banker stereotype. As his company tells us, Andrew leads by example and sets out to walk in customers’ shoes. He would even personally deliver loan documents to ensure settlements took place on time. Andrew says he is thrilled to lend his experience to our Club.

Campbelltown Catholic Club kingofclubs.com.au

“I am keen to share my experience and knowledge to help make my local community stronger and safer for future generations,” he said. The Mount Annan man has been married to wife, Sue, for 26 years and is a sports tragic, particularly when it comes to cricket in summer and following his winter rugby league passion for the blue and golds. Andrew started working at the Bank of NSW Redfern branch 35 years ago, and has worked for Westpac ever since, in Australia and in Papua New Guinea. Probably the most telling thing about his recent banker of the year award was that he was nominated by his team, not his bosses. We wish Andrew well as part of our own team and we look forward to his contribution to Campbelltown Catholic Club.

A Trio of Excellence These three veteran Campbelltown Catholic Club staffers have clocked 90 combined years of service! Diana Lawrence, Olive Lamond and Kevin Young have been praised by Club CEO Michael Lavorato for their loyalty, hard work and big smiles. Each of the trio work in different sections of our club, yet tell surprisingly similar stories of fond memories, friendships and the sort of flexible working conditions that have made it worth staying so long. Diana Lawrence is now on the reception, a helpful face of the club to visitors, but in 1987 she started on “GPU” – glass pick up. Bit by bit, Diana was then trained in all aspects of club life, from bar work and functions to TAB and Keno. “When I started, I honestly didn’t think I could do any of the tasks I was given, even pouring a beer properly, but I grew proud of the way I learned each step along the way,” she said. “You got to know customers well, and I remember seeing some of the regulars come in and I’d have their drinks waiting for them as they walked up because I knew what they ordered.” “It used to be mainly local tradies as customers, but now it can often be international guests,” she said. Diana’s attention to detail has now made her part of the front desk team and she takes great pride in the way they help anyone and everyone, as a de facto information centre. “It might be someone coming in to ask us where the motor registry is,” she said. “It’s got nothing to do with the club, but we will go out of our way to get the information they need. I think it’s just about treating people the way you would like to be treated.

“I’ve made so many good friends on my wonderful journey. I even met my soul mate here,” she added, noting the day she met her husband-tobe in the Club foyer in 2002. For Olive Lamond, the Food Court has long been her realm, becoming a much-loved part of the club landscape since the 1980s. She found the hours excellent while raising her family and has watched the club grow “from very small to very big”, working with a smorgasbord of chefs and making lifetime friendships. What’s the most important lesson Olive has learned in 30 years? “Communication. That is the key to everything,” she smiled. “And just being kind and having patience makes a workplace a lot nicer place.” Kevin Young is today the night supervisor at Campbelltown Golf Club, but three decades ago he was carrying a tray at Catholic Club functions, after transferring from the Ashfield Catholic Club when he moved to Campbelltown with his family. His career has taken him in a variety of areas – from bar, gaming and cellar to being maître d’ at the Club’s former Governor’s Restaurant. “People come out to enjoy themselves, and I just reckon it’s great to be able to help them enjoy themselves, while working with really good people,” he said. “Over the years I think my job has taught me to be more confident. “The Board of Directors always has a professional approach, too, and I respect how the Club has developed Aquafit, the Rydges Hotel, THE CUBE, Golf Club, and different food outlets so it is less reliant on gaming.”

A Night of Glitz and Glamour to Celebrate our Club Entertainers We are excited to announce, the 19th Annual Australian Club Entertainment Awards (ACE) Awards will be held at THE CUBE, on Tuesday 11 April 2017. This star-studded, glamorous event is the one night of the year the Australian Club Industry comes together to celebrate and show gratitude for the relentless hard work, dedication and talent of our entertainers. We recognise the contribution variety entertainers make to Clubs, and we believe there is no better place for an event of this scale to be held than our purpose built entertainment and events facility, THE CUBE. Carlotta will host this year’s event, along with a mirage of celebrity presenters including Casey Donovan, Tom Burlinson, Johnny Ruffo, Craig Bennett and James Blundell. The ACE Awards is also a showcase of some of Australia’s most talented performers, and the line up this year promises to be possibly the biggest talent pool to ever be seen together in a Club show. Fusing young upcoming talent with seasoned artists, the ACE Awards aims to not only present the best in entertainment, but to open doors for young upcoming acts, by offering them the chance of a lifetime to be mentored and perform alongside their idols.

18

Campbelltown Catholic Club kingofclubs.com.au

Being a huge supporter if young talent in the Club Industry, the ACE Awards will also feature a segment performed by the Talent Development Project (TDP). This unique program was established as a means of cultivating the extraordinary talent being discovered at the Annual Schools Spectacular. It is now the most successful youth training and development program in the music and entertainment industry in Australia, with up to 50 public school students selected each year to participate. The many TDP success stories are testimony to the success of the project and opening doors for young Australian performers, who are debuting in the entertainment industry. Graduates include Paulini, The McClymonts, Anja Nissen and Human Nature, who won several talent quests in Clubs, including one at Campbelltown Catholic Club. With thanks to generous sponsorship from various Clubs and their suppliers, including major sponsors News Local, Lion and Robert Oatley Wines, ticket prices are just $110 (plus booking fee) and include a two course meal and beverages. Don’t miss the opportunity to attend this extravagant event to be held at THE CUBE on Tuesday 11 April 2017. Book now at www.thecube.net.au

READING FOR LIFE Program

Did you know that right now in Australia: •

10-16% of all children are affected by learning disabilities and difficulties

17.7% of all Australian children live in households of poverty

Learning disabilities and difficulties can impact multiple generations with a family, creating a cycle of disadvantage.

Learning Links vision is a community where disadvantage and difficulties learning are no longer a barrier to a fulfilling life. The ‘Reading For Life Program’ is an evidence based program designed to target children in years 3-5 who are struggling and falling behind in their literacy development. The program has been enormously successful with children making valuable gains in reading accuracy, fluency and comprehension. Most importantly, the confidence and enjoyment of reading in participating children has increased, influencing their self-esteem and motivation to learn. “The program outcomes for these kids can be life changing. Without reading and literacy skills these children are at a high risk of

disengaging from education altogether. It’s incredibly important that we can help these kids before they enter high school.” Campbelltown Catholic Club is proud to partner with Learning Links by providing program funding and reading buddy volunteers. We would like to acknowledge Catholic Club Staff members Nicole Reilly, Louise Molland, Jessica Ciccone, Lachlan Carter, Megan Dengate, Kayla Crawford, Ally Carter, Leanna Field, and Jessica Satara who have generously volunteered to participate in the 15 week program. The volunteers will work one on one with a child using a range of educational game based activities You don’t need to be a maths or literacy expert, you just need to have fun and engage with your child. Play games for 45 minutes each week and see a child improve their reading accuracy and confidence. To learn more about the Reading Life program and how you can provide benefit to children and families in your local area please contact: Kate Whitney on 0401 498 280.

WORLD’S GREATEST SHAVE We would like to recognise our security staff member Kathleen McCully for her bravery and commitment to take part in the World’s Greatest Shave. Whilst this edition of Superstar was in print, Kathleen’s shave took place in the Club foyer on Sunday 12 March, 3pm. From the board of directors, management, staff and community of Campbelltown Catholic Club, we would like to congratulate Kathleen on her efforts! You can still donate to Kathleen’s shave via the link below: my.leukaemiafoundation.org.au/kathleenmccully

1.

Did you know our Club has its own ‘Herb Garden’? Installed at the end of 2015, the garden has been thriving, creating a constant source of fresh produce for our Chefs to add to their dishes. Pictured are our Chefs having fun picking fresh herbs ready for the day’s trade.

2. Karen Foord has been a member of Campbelltown Catholic

Club for two decades...but had never, ever been to a Member’s Draw. Until Thursday, 8 September, that is. So, how did she go for a first-timer? She won - walking away with $20,000! The Raby resident was thrilled, and said it will probably go to a big family cruise through the Pacific islands. “Thank you so much to the Catholic Club, what a great surprise.”

3. Our friendly Security Team love to see patrons having a great

time at the Club, whilst ensuring the safety of all guests. Some of the team are pictured here with Tony Holmes, Operations Manager - Facilities, Security and Compliance. Please say hello if you see the team around the Club!

4. On Friday 10 March the Club held its first ever “restaurant

crawl”. Titled ‘The Foraging Pig’, the night was a resounding success, with avid diners delighting in foraging their way through a pork inspired degustation menu, hosted by four of our best restaurants – Kyubi, Embers, Samba and OTIS. Please stay tuned for more exciting dining events to come!

5. Team Aquafit took part in the 24 Hour Fight against Cancer

Charity Walk in October, with over 100 Members, Staff & Friends taking part over the day-long event. The team raised an amazing $17,251 for the cause!

6. On Wednesday 15 March we hosted over 2,000 mums, dads,

kids & babies for two sold-out shows at THE CUBE with The Wiggles as part of their ‘Wiggle Around Australia’ National Tour. A very wiggly time was enjoyed by all and we had lots of ‘Mini Emma Wiggles’ join us!

CHAT WITH OUR SECURITY TEAM This might come as a surprise to a (very small) number of our patrons, but there are human beings inside the uniforms of our security staff. And, more importantly, they’re just doing their jobs. With strict behavioural laws enforced by the state government, not to mention club standards to uphold, our security team form a front line – and sometimes feel the heat.

One of them is Amanda Miller, in her seventh year at Campbelltown Catholic Club, and she can’t speak highly enough of most of our club patrons. Many of them she happily chats with each shift, often smiling at their good-natured jokes. But there are often a handful of trouble-makers who can make her go home, some nights, wondering why she does the job she does. Amanda is a typical hard-working local mum, who has spent years raising a family. As someone who enjoys a challenge, she is part of a dozen or so security guards who have become familiar faces to many of us. “We’re not out to ruin anyone’s night,” she said. “We love seeing people have a great time, but it’s our job to enforce the rules.” “Some people can become very aggressive and abusive – it gets very hard for us, as some people are very rude and you have to develop a thick skin and try to be as professional as possible in the circumstances.” In saying that, Amanda suspects things are getting better. She also reckons the Catholic Club is the best place she’s worked in a decade and half of doing security work – which is perhaps why she still does the job she does.

Looking Back

LOOKING BACK

WITH JEFF MCGILL The Cube draws the biggest local shows – from Marina Prior to Kasey Chambers and from The Angels to The Wiggles. In fact, the idea of live local entertainment by big stars is almost expected. But it wasn’t always that way. When the stage at Campbelltown Catholic Club was opened for acts in the late 1960s, it was downright revolutionary. Campbelltown was still a big country town, with no nightclubs and no regular concert nights and the town’s only movie theatre, the Macquarie Cinema, had closed a few years earlier. The first act booked by the club was the three-piece Brass Barons, but before long the club attracted major stars of the day such as Little Patti, Johnny Farnham and John Williamson (pictured). Robert Penfold – now a well-known TV reporter on Channel Nine News – was then a young reporter on the Advertiser. He recalled: “I was there when Normie Rowe sung. He was the biggest star they’d ever had, although Bernie Slattery and some of the other senior club members thought the place was going to pot having that ‘hip’ character appear on stage. Kamahl was very accepted.” The earliest controversy came in 1970 when Barry Crocker performed to a packed house of 600 fans but very mildly swore, sparking a few complaints. But nothing to drama that happened when English comedian, Dickie Valentine, uttered the F-bomb. Club manager Leo Callaghan famously climbed onto the stage and ordered him off, making national headlines. But as far as publicity, nothing outdid the fuss over Winfred Attwell. This world-famous pianist arrived at the club in November 1970 and was treated like royalty. The people of Campbelltown loved her, and she loved them back. Although booked to do three shows, she stayed for eight and played for 2500 people. Not bad for a club with 900 members at the time. It, more than any other single event, put the club on the entertainment map. A young bloke called Steve Muter (who later became the club’s general manager) was serving beers in 1970 and remembered: “When Winifred Attwell came here, it was big time! Hey, we’re not only bringing in an international star, but we’re putting her on for weeks. Her husband, Lou, became a fixture at the bar. We progressed from that and got some good overseas acts.”

HOT SHOT WINNERS

Ella

Sarah

Cody

November 2016 Winner

October 2016 Winner

September 2016 Winner

Ella Wooldridge is one of those teenagers who uses the words “only” and “10k” in the same sentence. A rising talent of Macarthur’s triathlon scene, she is the latest recipient of Campbelltown Catholic Club’s monthly Sports Hot Shot prize.

A smashed finger has helped Sarah Jansz jump through the hoops to be named as the Campbelltown Catholic Club’s latest Junior Sports Hotshot winner. The 10 year old from Campbelltown loves her netball so much she has been hitting the courts as she recovers from a broken finger. Her mum, Gidget, explained Sarah played for Campbeltown East 10’s this year and got player of the week in her first game. “Then next training session the coach was throwing the ball to each girl but when she threw it to Sarah it hit her little finger,” Gidget said.

Cody Crane packs a punch as our latest Junior Sports Hot Shot winner. The 11-year-old from Appin has been so successful in using karate skills to overcome a major speech delay and other challenges that he has been rewarded with a $500 prize by Campbelltown Catholic Club.

The Elderslie High student was thrilled, and said the $500 cash that goes with the prize will help buy a set of $1000 wheels for her competition bike. Ella, 14, has her heart set on representing Australia in the 2024 Olympics and she hopes to follow in the footsteps of other homegrown stars such as Natalie Van Coevorden and Erin Densham. She is already well on the path.

Sarah shook off the pain and managed to play a game half court, but when she went home it was swelling so badly she had to go to hospital. “It was dislocated, broken and had a twist on the bone,”

“Cody has a sensory processing disorder which greatly affects his concentration, a major speech delay, hearing loss and low working memory,” explained his mum, Donna. “This has affected his ability to learn to read and write and remember things he has been taught.” But, after three years of martial arts effort at Toodokan Self-Defence Academy, Cody has absorbed lessons in patience, concentration, precision and self-discipline.

Sub Clubs AUSSI MASTERS SWIMMING CLUB We’re Australian endurance swimming champions! There, I’ve said it. Instead of some bland introductory paragraph about how well we did in 2016 - well, we didn’t do well - we did brilliantly! And not only did we win, we smashed the old national point score record, so we’re national champions (out of 152 clubs across the country) and also the national point score record holders. The National Endurance Swimming Program consists of 62 separate swims per person, from 400m to one hour, across all strokes (it even includes a total of 7.5km of butterfly – but that’s optional). Our plan for 2016 was to break the 600 average-points-per-swimmer barrier, something that had never been done. That ‘whooshing’ sound in late October was the magical 600 mark flying by as we marched on to 620 points, then 630 points – and on to an extraordinary 651 points! The concerted effort meant we recaptured the Australian Endurance Swimming Award, which we last won in 2012.

Nationals competitors at the home of Lindsay’s sister-in-law, Phyllis O’Brien. Then there was Gershwin and me at the Powerhouse, a Barangaroo reserve walk and a Big ‘0’ BBQ lunch for Heather Rouen. That’s only the first half… the Wharf Review at Wollongong, our annual Campbelltown Carnival, The Divine Miss Bette at Casula Powerhouse, Dream Lover at the Lyric Theatre, Elvis and JOK at the Powerhouse, our Club Christmas BBQ at Annie and Doug Cooke’s, Christmas Breakfast at Macarthur Tavern, plus the quarterly Ladies Lunches organised by Annie. And we still had time for swimming! We miss Steve and Chris Clough who moved up the coast to live – but we love that they still join us for some of our social gatherings and to officiate at our carnivals. Finally, thanks to some organisations – Campbelltown Amateur Swimming Club for their unwavering support whenever we host a swim meet and to Campbelltown Catholic Club for their continued sponsorship. Here’s to another record-breaking year in 2017!

As a relatively small club of 25 members, the total points score is out of our reach when competing with clubs with 100+ members but it’s the average-points-per-swimmer that we do so well at. So well in fact, that 2016 was the 17th year in succession that we have won in NSW. While everyone chipped in with extremely valuable contributions, it was Mark Thompson who set the bar high by attacking all the longest swims early in the year. Congratulations to Kay Hough and Ben Taylor, our newest club members to be Individual National Endurance Champions, and to Diane Baker and Hans Preiss for completing all swims. An indication of the commitment was one swim of Linda Beveridge – she had only ever swum 25m of breaststroke in her life, then on the very last day to score points she swam a 1 hour breaststroke – truly incredible team spirit. We’re a swimming club, of course, and it’s our weekly swims of a Sunday morning at Campbelltown pool that we all enjoy. We swim all distances from 25m in every stroke we can and it’s always very well contested, in a friendly sort of way. 2016 points have been tallied but we all have to wait for our annual presentation to find out the winner; money has been placed on Kay Hough to take out her first Club Championship but Jim Pelosa was finishing the year fast.

Club President Greg Jacques receiving the NSW Endurance Swimming Award

Eight Club Members travelled to Melbourne for the Australian Championships, held over four days in April. Team spirit was outstanding and lots of PB’s were set. Team spirit was on show again at the NSW Relay Meet at Homebush in July; again a wonderful display with Campbelltown teams winning 5 Golds – congratulations to Annie Cook, Helga Duncan, Kay Hough, Elly Ramon, Victor Libdy, Russell McLeod, Jim Pelosa, Lindsay Risk, Ben Taylor and Rod Young, and to all our team for their efforts. Our Club would not be as good and successful as it is without a lot of work behind the scenes, so a huge thank you to everyone who do things and hold positions; our Club runs remarkably smoothly thanks to all of you. Apart from swimming, a close second place is our social calendar, more than capably organised by Lesley and Mark Thompson. It’s a big list… Australia Day at Lesley and Mark’s, our Club Presentation hosted by Greg and Christine Jacques, Piano Man at Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre and a dinner party for the Melbourne 40

Sub Clubs CCC FISHING CLUB The Club has been quite busy with several social functions and fishing trips. We organised weekend trips to Greenwell Point (near Nowra) in July, August, September and December. Members look forward to these monthly trips and a good time is had by all. These trips returned a mixed bag of fish but most notably the magnificent 4.9kg snapper caught by young 8-year-old Shannon Kelsey (pictured), while fishing with his pop, Des Kelsey.

site and some social activities in Ulladulla and surrounding areas including some heading to the movies. Hopes were high for a fish on Friday. As forecast, Friday was a good day for fishing with the swell dropping and 10 Members heading out. Results again were excellent with Mark ‘Thommo’ Thompson catching the fish of the day, a lovely 2.45kg Snapper and in total 64 fish, mainly snapper, were caught for the day. Saturday was another lovely fishing day and John Portelli caught the fish of the day, a 2.94kg Snapper. In the afternoon, preparations were well underway for the annual Club BBQ and Presentation where the main results for the week were: Fisho of the Week – Wayne Harrison, Lady Fisho of the Week – Natalie Harrison (Keeping it in the family!), and Boat of the Week – John Portelli. Congratulations to all. A total of 159 fish were caught for the week (mainly Snapper) as the locals had predicted (126 total Snapper caught). All too soon, the week had again come to an end and planning for the 2017 trip was underway.

October saw our Club hold the annual 8-Day Ulladulla Fishing Trip. Accommodation was at the Ulladulla Headland Tourist Park. Most members have elected to utilise the excellent cabins rather than camp or take their own caravans, but the Club Marquee offers a communal place for gatherings. Saturday then turned into a social day with members taking the opportunity to catch up. Sunday was as forecast unfortunately, with the wind very strong, but it appeared the rain had moved on. Only one boat ventured out but was back within 10 minutes once they poked their nose around the headland and saw the large swell running from the south. Whilst the wind had abated during the night, Monday morning unfortunately saw the swell increased and was forecast to increase as the day progressed so the call was made to “watch and act”. Later during the morning, the wind picked up and all chances of fishing for the day were abandoned. Some Members took the opportunity to attempt some estuary fishing but even this was difficult due to the conditions. Tuesday saw Members up early with great anticipation. The seas were still lumpy with a 2 to 3 metre swell from the south, but the forecast was for this to abate as the day progressed. The results were very encouraging; with the day’s results being 25 Snapper caught with the largest being by Wayne ‘Spider’ Harrison of 2.02 kg. There were also other species caught including Morwong and Flathead. Wednesday saw excellent conditions and 16 people headed out. The boats were distributed around all points of the compass and radio chatter was guarded on whom was catching what where. The seas were if anything too smooth with no wind and no drift but results for the day were excellent with 47 nice Snapper being caught with the largest of the day 3.12kg by Johnny Ockers which was a lovely fish. There were several others over the two-kilogram size and all fish were of excellent quality. Thursday saw the wind and swell return, so the opportunity was taken to clean up around the camp

Joanne Van Heeswyk and our President, Mark ‘Thommo’ Thompson with their classic snapper catches

Following the success of our first trip to South West Rocks in 2016 and the thought of again getting into some Spanish and Spotted Mackerel, 5 Members of the CCC Fishing Club headed to South West Rocks on Sunday 19 February to enjoy four days fishing with the excellent charter operator Andrew at the Rock’s Fishing Charters (www.southwestrocksfishcharters.com.au) The fishing conditions for the week looked excellent and expectations were high for the week. Monday saw us catch 10 Snapper, 2 Flathead, 2 Pig Fish, 6 Morwong and a Gummy Shark. The Mackerel were not around and John Van hooked onto a Mac Tuna on the way out which made for some fresh bait. Tuesday was a very lean day and whilst conditions were again excellent, from the chatter on the radio, it appeared everyone was having a tough day. It was more a day of boating than catching. On Wednesday, the decision was made to head out to the Fish Aggregating Device (FAD) some 9km out to sea. Reports the previous day showed no Dolphin Fish or Mahi Mahi were around but we hoped the fish gods would smile on us. After about an hour, we had 28 Dolphin Fish and things were looking up. On the way into shallow grounds, a Black Marlin was also hooked up on the trawl and Frank Muscat was lucky (or unlucky enough depending on how you look at it) to be given the rod for what turned out to be a 40 plus minute battle to land the 40-odd kg fish on light tackle. It was Frank’s first Black Marlin and a rare one for our Club as we do not target these types of fish and he did very well to land the fish. The afternoon was spent cleaning, filleting and vacuum sealing the fish with some left out for a cook up on the BBQ along with some lovely local prawns. Thursday was

Sub Clubs again a lean day with Des Kelsey landing a Flathead as the only keeper fish for the day. The trip was a success under difficult and lean catch conditions and the absence of the Mackerel but the company, excellent charter & gear and accommodation made the trip one to remember. The CCC Fishing Club is a very social club and welcome families as well as singles who may be interested in spending some quality time on the water with likeminded people. We meet at the Catholic Club on the second Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm. Until next time, keep the rods bent and the lines tight!!

CCC SOCIAL GOLF CLUB We are well under way into the competition year with the championship rounds not too far away. Before then we still have the Max Berthon Shield and we will start our defence of the Association Shield against Lidcombe Catholic Club. Major trophies contested so far have been the Foursomes Event; the leaders after the first round were Alan & Mark Smith with a score of 74, closely followed by Wayne Golby & Peter Copus with a 74.5 score. The second round saw some much better scores with Garry McDonald & Paul Weidenhofer posting a 66, narrowly beating Brad Bailey and Matt Greene (Jnr Golfer) by countback, also on 66. The winners of this year’s Foursomes was Garry McDonald & Paul Weidenhofer with a combined total of 142.The Presidents Trophy was won by Peter King with a nice score of 40, and Runner-Up was Gary Emmett, also with 40 points. The Captains Trophy was won by Peter King with a good score of 42 points, followed by Rob Green on 38 points.

COLLEGIANS BRIDGE CLUB In a climate where many social and sporting clubs are facing declining membership it is very pleasing to report that our Bridge Club continues to flourish. This is due, in large measure, to the friendly atmosphere in our club, the input from an active organising committee and our efforts to welcome and support new players after completion of the beginner lessons conducted so ably by Christine Edge. We officially recognised our 2016 Club Championship winners at our end of year function in December. Each pair demonstrated consistently good play over the course of the whole year and it was pleasing to see a couple of ‘neck and neck’ finishes. We extend our congratulations to: Division 1

Renate & Richard Riedel

Division 2

Lucia Mendonca & Margaret Phippen

Division 3 Cheryl Dean & Judy Bjorklund Division 4

Eileen Nicholas & Sheila Fonseca

Division 5

Joseph Mascarenhas & Maurie Lazarus

Division 6

The Club Calendar for 2017 is full of interesting competitions and special events.

We managed to win the Association Shield against Lidcombe Catholic Club 4-1. Phill Wright won the Club Champion with a 79 Nett and Lidcombe took home the Paul Ryan. A good effort by all those involved. The annual Canberra match saw a closely fought out game with the Catholic Club coming out on top, nice to have the shield back where it belongs. The annual RSL challenge against Campbelltown RSL was a tightly fought contest with Campbelltown Catholic Club coming out on top and winning with 611 points and Campbelltown RSL on 592. Alan Smith (President) noted that it is good to see the trophy cabinet full. Our Cock of the Walk (match play) is still underway with Gary Billingham to play Rod Kennedy for the title – good luck to both golfers. We had 20 golfers attend our annual weekend away which was at Catalina at Batemans Bay. We had some great weather, good golf and camaraderie for an enjoyable weekend. This year we will be going back to Catalina at Batemans Bay and Members are encouraged to signal your intentions early as it is expected to book out. Our Club welcomes all players, in particular we would like to see ladies and juniors participate in the great social atmosphere that exists at this Club. The Committee and Members greatly appreciate the support received from The Catholic Club, which has been ongoing since our inception in 1969. Most games are played fortnightly early on a Sunday and those interested in joining can access our website www.cathogolfers.com.au or through the link on the Catholic Club website. Until next report, enjoy your golf and keep swinging!

Recently, we celebrated Australia Day, which fell on a Thursday, one of our regular playing sessions, by holding the Aussie Pairs Event. Many Members enthusiastically embraced the spirit by coming dressed in patriotic gear. Who said Bridge was a stuffy game? Congratulations to Lucia and Alex Mendonca and Richard and Renate Riedel on their win. If you have an interest in learning to play Bridge or joining our Club, we’d love to hear from you. Sub Clubs COLLEGIANS HOCKEY CLUB Campbelltown Collegians ‘Collies’ Hockey Club is looking forward to an exciting new year ahead. We are growing well but as always, are looking for new players from all ages and skill levels to join our very social and family-friendly club. If you are looking for a new sport to play, why not try your hand at hockey, for fun, fitness and to make great new friends! We train every Thursday night at Narellan Hockey Fields.

Training and games are both held at Narellan Hockey Fields so there is no travelling from field to field on game days. For our Under 7 and Under 9 Minky players we offer FREE Club Registration and a Hockey Starter Kit in their first year, supplied by Macarthur Hockey. Included in the starter kit is a stick, ball, shin guards and a bag. Reflecting on our successes from last year, some of the highlights would have to be our Under 11B team winning the Grand Final. In a nail biter they came away with the win, 2-1 in extra time. Well done team! Our Under 13’s Girls Ollies Team also won their Grand Final in a fantastic game. Congratulations to Collies superstar Rachael Downey on being awarded the MSW Best and Fairest for U13 Girls!

of this relationship and look forward to many exciting ventures in the future. Our All Abilities Cricket program once again was the shining light in a year of high achievements. This season we ran the program for 10 weeks from October till late December and had 31 junior children, 13 senior participants from Liverpool Share Care and up to 8 members of Macarthur Special Olympics. This meant that each Friday evening at St Gregory’s College we required many helpers; this need was met with great enthusiasm by players from our senior sides as well as parents and sponsors. We are very thankful for the passion shown by our volunteers every week. Alycia Cantrill, our co-ordinator, was very happy with the amount and involvement of all our volunteers. We would also like to thank the following organisations for their help throughout the program: Camden District Cricket Association, Ghosts Grade Cricket Club, Sydney University Grade Club and Camden Cricket Club. Because of the interest and greatness of this program Collegians have been nominated by the CDCA for a “Cricket Australia – A Sport for All” Cricket Award. In our Junior ranks we entered 5 sides with our Under 10s and Under 16/1 making the Grand Final. Congratulations to our Under 16/1 Blue side who went on to win. The senior Grand Finals will be held shortly and we have four sides out of the six entered in this weekends Grand Final. This is a great effort for our small but very exciting Club and we are hoping to see success here. Our AGM will be held in June and registrations will begin again in August. If you are interested in playing cricket next season please contact us on the addresses below.

A huge Congratulations goes to Ethan Pereira for getting MSW U15 Junior Best and Fairest!

Once again we thank the Campbelltown Catholic Club for its help and support that makes our job to support the cricket community of the region an easier one.

Our Club would welcome any new players in all grades from Under 7’s, Under 9’s, Under 11’s, Under 13’s, Under 15’s, Under 18’s, Ladies and Men’s teams. Beginners to advanced, all are welcome!

COLLEGIANS SOCCER CLUB (COLLIES FOOTBALL CLUB)

Finally, a huge thank you to our major sponsor Campbelltown Catholic Club, their continued support of ‘Collies’ is greatly appreciated.

COLLEGIANS CRICKET CLUB The2016/17 season is drawing to a close and what a season it has been. The new members of the Committee have worked hard to continue our standing in the local cricket community. We are known as the ‘Family Club’ and this has been a strong theme throughout the year. This year the Club was involved in Milo in2 Cricket, T20 Blast, Girls Only Cricket, Junior Cricket, Senior Cricket as well as our very successful All Abilities Cricket Program. This season the Collegians Cricket Club also began our new role as a Partner to Special Olympics Macarthur and provided support and facilities to this organisation. We are all very proud

At the time of writing we are finalising our teams for Winter Season 2017 which commences on the weekend of 1-2 April. We still have vacancies in some of our Junior Teams. Please contact our Secretary, Alison, on 0413 700 952 if you are interested in joining the “Collies Family”. Our fields are looking in top condition after the long awaited fences were erected at the beginning of 2016, plus a layer of soil spread over Field One at the end of the season. The lights upgrade also made it easier to see and we could utilise more of the grassed areas for training. Thank you to everyone who assisted in making the fences and lighting upgrade a reality – especially ex Liberal MP Brian Doyle and Campbelltown City Council. We invested in a new playing strip for 2016 and it was a pleasure to see all teams, coaches, managers and committee in the same style shirt. Secretary Alison said: “The teams are wearing identical shirts, (which) promotes a sense of unity within the Club”. Season 2016 saw three Premiership Teams – U12 Girls, AA Ladies Division 4 and our AA Men’s Division 6. Six of our nineteen teams made it to semis, with our U12 Girls and AA Men’s Division 6 teams Campbelltown Catholic Club kingofclubs.com.au

Sub Clubs becoming Champions. It was a pleasure to watch our U12 Girls develop into an all-round cohesive team, willing to learn and listen to Coach Matt. Consisting of three 9-year-olds, seven 10-year-olds and four 11/12-year-olds Matt said: “I saw something in these girls that gave me confidence and their attitude along with team comradery made them a force from an early stage”. During 2016 we recognised the following achievements: Five Years of Playing Service: Sophie Anderson, Brendan Hoey and Ryan Tonna Fifteen Years of Playing Service: Isaac Murray Five years of Club Service: Wayne Hosking, Alison Tonna and Richard Tonna Ten years of Club Service: Kevin Wafer Campbelltown Collegians Football Club plays at Rosemeadow Playing Fields in Dickens Avenue, Ambarvale. Our Club Meeting is held on the third Monday of each month, February to September, at the Campbelltown Catholic Club from 7.30pm. All players, team officials, supporters and interested persons are welcome to attend.

MOUNTAIN DEVILS BUSHWALKING AND SOCIAL CLUB Another six months have gone by with the Devils enjoying themselves out on the tracks and trails of Sydney and surrounds. Our Membership is steady at about 50 with plenty of room for more. Our Committee does a great job of organising walks for us to enjoy. Our website is available to keep anyone interested in walking up to date on our activities. Our Spring calendar saw us at some of our favourite places like The Curra Moors, looking down on spectacular harbour views. Manly to Spit walk which always pleases and makes you know you’re walking. As well the Boxvale Track, my first walk with the Devils and an old favourite. Time was also spent in the Heathcote National Park for a 15-17km walk, one of our longest treks. Most of the walks have been around the 10-12kms mark apart from social outings, which we all enjoy. October found us in Berrima followed by Darkes Forest and the most beautiful walk along the harbour foreshore from Taronga Zoo to Balmoral. Next week we were at Thornleigh walking to Hornsby and finished off the month in Hazelbrook looking at the Falls. November started with a city walk with Kev, around Rozelle and Balmain, followed by a Waterfall to Heathcote walk with Mike, back to the city for the Hen and Chicken Bay walk concluding at Cabarita with Lorraine. And the month continued with a more local walk at Marhneys Hole Circuit, Appin, led by Jenny and concluded at Wattamolla to Little Marley with Nena. Our Walk Leaders are kept busy and are appreciated by those not as navigationally blessed, who like to follow their leader. On to Summer and a very hot one it was which caused a few walks to be postponed for the health of the walkers. We still managed to get around after the Christmas break and enjoy our lovely Social Christmas Party on the Nepean Belle, which saw 30 Members enjoying the Nepean River, driving the boat and eating well. It was the Devils at their best, enjoying each other’s company. Some of the walks included the Wolli Creek Two Rivers walk, a gem hidden right next to the railway line. A more local walk to Frere’s Crossing 44

and beyond saw January rounded out. February was hot and we lost a few walks but managed Mermaids Pool and the Nepean River Circuit at Glenbrook. The climax for the month was the Car Camp at Coolendel, Nowra, held over three days and enjoyed by all for the walks, rafting, company, and the scenic place where wild animals roamed free amongst the campers. As can be seen, I seem to have emphasised the company we keep in the Mountain Devils in this report. They are a great bunch of people – friendly, outgoing, fit as fiddles and looking forward to getting new walkers interested in our Club, which has been going for 13 years. Be a Devil. Come Walk With Us! And remember: walk safely, walk with a registered Club. Our website is www. mountaindevils.org.au

The season starts March 25th and this season the Association have changed the time slots of a number of our Junior Grades. These details are available on our website. We are pleased to have some new coaches joining our ranks this season. As part of the CDNA regulations, all coaches need to attend a minimum level of at least the CDNA basic course. These qualifications need to be updated every three seasons. These courses were held on Saturday 18th and 25th February and from all reports were a great success. We thank all those who gave up their Saturday morning to ensure they were able to coach this season. We have a couple of new umpires to start the season and we have two of our younger girls joining the have-a-go umpire training. Hopefully they will graduate to proper games throughout the season. We hope all of our players, coaches, managers & umpires enjoy the season ahead no matter the results on the courts. Our Club would like to thank the Campbelltown Catholic Club for their continued support over many years. Our thanks also to Little Elves Child Care at Bargo, Sports2U Uniforms Leumeah, and Paul Wakeling Motor Group for their generous support. Finally for those who want to keep up to date with our Club we have many different social media platforms from ‘Facebook’ and ‘Twitter’ to ‘Team App’.
