Grounded in the principles of quality, flexibility and sustainability, Xeikon develops web-fed digital colour presses for label and packaging applications, document printing, and commercial printing. Xeikon, a division of Flint Group, is a technology-agnostic solutions provider with almost 30 years of experience in digital printing. Grounded in the principles of quality, flexibility and sustainability, Xeikon develops webfed digital colour presses for label and packaging applications, document printing, and commercial printing. With over 500 digital label presses installed worldwide, the company is one of the market leaders in the self-adhesive label market. Today, Xeikon has the broadest digital label printing offering in the market. Print Innovation Asia spoke with Bent Serritslev, managing director for Asia Pacific. In the last three years, he has led Xeikon’s business as head of the region. He brings with him over 32 years of sales and marketing for machines and supplies to the offset, flexo, gravure and digital business in the Asia Pacific. GROWTH STRATEGIES IN ASIA PACIFIC Please update us on the company’s position in the industry. Our key focus in APAC over the past three years have been to get a strong foot hold in professional label converting industry in the region within high quality electrophotostatic digital printing and gradually expand into the folding cartons and commercial print business.

We do not disclose market share, however, Xeikon is today the clear number two supplier of quality, label production presses in the region. Over the past three years, our share of the market has increased.

How has it been for the company over the last year? The past 12 months has been very busy indeed with massive strengthening of our infrastructure in APAC.

Bent Serritslev, managing director for Asia Pacific.

6 Just to mention a few, we have gone from a dealer distribution channel in Australia and New Zealand, to a full Xeikon set-up, complete with direct sales, service and support structure through the Flint Group to get closer the market. We have also gone direct sales and service in Taiwan, China, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and India.

Xeikon PX3000

We upgraded our dealer network and enhanced both the Japanese and the Malaysian Innovation Centers for customer demos and tests. On top of that, we invested in direct service teams, and more than doubled the number of field technicians and application specialists. For 2018, we are on target to further grow our service and applications team to support our customer and make them more successful, not just within the label space, but also in the increasing growing interest for our affordable folding carton solution and high volume commercial press range. The new year will also see us introducing our range of Panther inkjet presses to the label industry in the APAC region. With the new addition, Xeikon thus far has the largest digital label offering in the market. What is the company’s position on practicing sustainability? Xeikon is possibly one of the most environmental conscious provider of digital printing technology. Our dry toner technology does not use any chemistry, does not release VOC (violent organic compounds), and is fully recyclable. Xeikon has the only digital press that provides FDA (Food and Drug Administration)-compliant toner for direct, dry food contact. Furthermore, our presses are very low in power consumption - possibly the lowest - in terms of KwH per squaremeter of printing. What sets the company apart from the competition? Xeikon’s range of presses have total unique stand-out features in the market.

Our roll-fed technology with full rotary printing allows for no gap, no intermittent moving of web and no speed reduction irrespective of number of colors being printed. Our dry toner technology is FDA-compliant, and we have the strongest light fastness without using UV inks / coatings. Our presses adopt a modular structure, so speed and size upgrades can be done in printing plant without having to exchange the press. Additionally, the machines are easy to service, and has very high uptime production reliable technology. Finally, our X-800 front end is possibly the fastest RIP technology and workflow solution in the digital label industry, as we are able to RIP single labels and output many, even with variable contents. What are the company’s recent announcements?

At the recently-concluded Labelexpo Europe, we launched new digital label presses in both the UV inkjet and dry toner segments. New product announcements included the Xeikon CX500 wide web digital label press in the company’s Cheetah Series, which is the first press based on a new generation dry toner platform that is ready for Industry 4.0. The company also introduced the Xeikon Panther Series of UV inkjet digital label presses, including the highend Xeikon PX3000 and the newly announced entry-level Xeikon PX2000, both to be made available on a 4-colour and a 5-colour configuration. We have also announced that we have entered into a strategic partnership with EFI for its Jetrion label printing business. Under the partnership, Xeikon will service, support and supply the worldwide Jetrion customer base, and continue the direct sales of Jetrion

7 What are the company’s recent activities in Asia Pacific, and what can we look forward to? The digital label industry in APAC is still dominated by the EP (electrophotostatic) toner technology, as this process still provides top quality reproduction. IJ (inkjet) is however fast entering specific segments of the market and with the launch of our range of Panther presses, the PX 2000 and PX 3000, Xeikon now also offers IJ technology. The first Panther presses in APAC is scheduled to arrive in Q2 2018. Xeikon is the only digital provider to the label business with both technologies for the label industry to give customers a choice – we facilitate being application-driven rather than technology-driven. Customers are increasingly looking for digital printing solutions – not just for short run but more and more migrating to variable contents, new applications, security features and giving their choice between high cost conventional technology or a lower technology entry point.

digital label printing systems as part of our portfolio of digital dry toner and UV inkjet presses for the self-adhesive label market.

With the above announcements, we further extend our digital label printing portfolio, to make it the broadest in the industry.

We have also announced the dates for the fourth edition of our successful Xeikon Café Conference & Exhibit (www.xeikoncafe.com). The event will return on 20 to 23 March at our headquarters in Lier, Belgium.

Digital Print Industry Why is digital printing growing? I believe the drive is initiated largely by the print buyers and brand owners rather than the converters and the machine manufacturers. Until now, it has been largely driven by short run and shifting production from conventional presses to digital but it is increasingly shifting towards demand for new features such as variable contents, security contents and speed to market, which is hard to achieve with conventional printing processes. Xeikon fits this market well due to strong colour management, variable contents and very high reproduction quality using dry toner. What are your observations on the digital printing industry in Asia Pacific? The single highest growth potential in the label space for digital is APAC where many markets are still in the early adaptor phase and where growth in unit is seen to the tune of 15-20 pct

per annum. Everyone is talking digital but few converters are having a true business strategy for entering digital, which is a key factor to success. A “me-too” approach is often seen but not always turned into a success. What challenges do digital print adopters in Asia face? Having a clear mission or strategy on investment in digital, rather than a “metoo” approach. Selling digital production time – getting new business as short run require a lot more job entries than long run business. Gearing the finishing line towards shorter run, less waste and faster change owner. Getting the right operator who understands color management, prepress but also production printing. How can printers make the easier transition into digital print? By having a clear mission and strategy

of where digital fit their current and future business direction and deal with vendors who understands the label business not just the equipment and capabilities. Digital is simple if proper guidance, consultancy and initial hand holding is taken serious. Asia Pacific, while progressive in terms of technology, is still very much price-sensitive. Costing plays a big part in the final decision. What are your thoughts on this? I do not believe that Asia is more pricesensitive than the rest of the world. Investment level and cost to print are critical everywhere. At Xeikon, we normally recommend first time buyers to start their journey into the digital market with an entry level press and ensure that press can be upgraded to fulfill future growth demands without too heavy extra cost. Also, we do spend considerable efforts jointly with our customers to evaluate TCOP (total cost of production) to ensure that the investment is viable for the customer. What is the one thing that the digital print industry should do more of, or perhaps should do better in? Be honest with the customer as to what can be done and especially what cannot be done. Conventional print is not the answer to all your prayers; neither is digital, but it goes a long way.

Fuji Xerox Launches Production Press Equipped with the industry’s first single-pass, six-colour print engine, the new Iridesse™ Production Press is able to print specialty colours - including metallic

Fuji Xerox announced the launch of its new high-end, professional-use production printer, the Iridesse™ Production Press. The digital press was first released in Japan on 5th October, followed by sequential release in the rest of the Asia-Pacific region, including China. The Iridesse™ Production Press can produce images with 2,400 dots per inch fine resolution at the speed of 120 pages per minute. For the first time in the industry utilising xerography, this new production printer with a six-colour print engine is able to print different specialty colours including metallic with a single pass, by housing up to two additional specialty dry inks

of gold, silver, clear and white, in addition to the common cyan, magenta, yellow and black (CMYK). “Digital printing can increase efficiencies, reduce wastage, cost, and add value to printed materials. Enhancing the value of printed products with the use of digital presses, is critical for printing companies to grow their businesses. The Iridesse™ Production Press is newest Fuji Xerox product designed to deliver on industry standards and will open new opportunities with new application,” said Steve Ford, general manager, production sales & marketing, Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific. “As the industry leader, Fuji Xerox continues to enhance

its product line up to contribute to the growth of our customers’ businesses.” Specialty Colour Printing including Metallics The ‘Iridesse’ name was derived from the word ‘iridescence’ to signify the highly reflective metallic colours that the press is capable of producing. The ability to print metallic colours is also the main differentiating factor between the Iridesse™ Production Press and the other Fuji Xerox product portfolio. The Iridesse™ Production Press is able to produce the metallic colours by enabling underlay printing. A first for Fuji Xerox and the industry, Specialty Dry Ink can be printed under CMYK Dry Ink. Underlay printing gold or silver dry ink with CMYK inks can produce highly reflective metallic colours. Prior to this, such metallic shades can only be achieved via conventional methods like offset and foil stamping. Developed especially for the new press, the HD (High Definition) EA Dry Ink is the smallest particle size toner for Fuji Xerox. The HD EA Dry Ink is able to fuse six layers of dry ink on the substrate, while maintaining high productivity and image quality on a range of media. Being able to print metallic shades

Packaging Innovation Asia Issue 10 2017

11

Iridesse™ outside of Gold or Silver in a single pass will open up a wide range of high-value applications for printers. Metallic looks are an effective tool for premiumisation and to immediately evoke a sense of luxury. It is also highly popular for seasonal products which demand multiple SKUs, shorter run lengths and faster delivery times. On top of Fuji Xerox’s range of metallic colours, the press supports metallic colours found in colour catalogues such as Pantone+Metallic and Pantone+Premium Metallic. White dry ink will be added to the specialty dry ink lineup to accommodate printing on dark-coloured or other specialty papers. The newly launched print engine enables CMYK dry inks layers to be processed on top of the specialty dry ink layer. In addition, an overlay of another specialty dry ink can also be processed on top of CMYK dry ink layers. Developmental Firsts for Fuji Xerox The Iridesse™ Production Press is equipped with over 100 new patents.

One of which is the newly applied 1200 x 1200-dpi x 10-bit RIP rendering that can reproduce smooth texts, thin lines, and gradations of the source material without degrading the image quality. The new, expanded range of paper will help expand your business opportunities. The press can handle paper thickness of 52gsm to 400gsm. This is the widest media thickness range for Fuji Xerox product porfolio.

Additionally, the Iridesse™ Production Press can print banners up to 1,200 mm for 1-sided print – another first for Fuji Xerox range of presses. The Iridesse™ Production Press takes on a modular design. Printers can choose to connect to new finishing attachments by Fuji Xerox including the Finisher D6 with Booklet Maker, Crease/Two-sided Trimmer, and SquareFold Trimmer to automatically produce professional booklets and folded leaflets. These finishing options expand the possible printing applications by enabling to produce complex folded leaflets including accordion-fold and gate-fold.

Health & Beauty label printing?. This is how it's done By Filip Weymans, VP Global Marketing

Not one label is the same - different Applications require different digital technology, which is precisely why printing is such an exciting business. Whether it is for pharma, wine & spirits, durables, health & beauty, industrial chemicals or beverages, every label comes with its own aesthetic and functional requirements. Cosmetics, fragrances and makeup labels are mainly produced with synthetic substrates (white or clear, BoPP or PE). They must be resistant to humidity, contain sufficient levels of white opacity for the clear labels and look stunning on the shelf. Image quality drives the choice At Xeikon, we did an in-depth analysis of different digital label printing technologies and looked at the technical characteristics of each technology. Based on this report, Xeikon recommends two technologies for printing health & beauty labels: dry toner and UV inkjet. The choice ultimately comes down to the desired image quality the brand owner expects. Let’s take a closer look.

16 Substrates Two factors determine if a printing technology is suitable for a certain substrate: adhesion (if and how well the printed image stays fixed to the substrate) and pigment penetration (if and how well the ink or toner penetrates the substrate). For health & beauty labels, adhesion should be high, while pigment penetration should be avoided at all cost.

inkjet requires a corona treatment to ensure a high enough surface tension and proper spread of the UV inkjet ink. White opacity of cosmetic labels

Synthetic substrates are most common for cosmetic labels. Due to its chemical affinity dry toner is a great choice as it can be used without any coating or primer. UV-curable

For UV-curable inks used in single-pass high-frequency jetting systems, the pigment particle size should be small enough to avoid nozzle clogging. Also, the required viscosity of the inks does limit the maximum possible pigment load. However, inkjet inks are capable

For health & beauty labels, a sufficient level of white opacity is required. The opacity of a color is determined by the concentration of pigments and pigment particle size. Dry toner scores well on both accounts. White dry toner combines the highest pigment load with the largest particle size, offering white layers of an opacity that is generally higher than that of flexo white, in a single pass.

17 of achieving an opacity comparable to that of screen printing, provided the print head features a low native resolution, producing a large-sized droplet, which is a disadvantage for design elements other than solids, and at potentially lower printing speeds. Look and feel of cosmetic labels Dry toner gives a matte impression which, by applying a varnish, can give a glossy impression. When fine image details (offset look) are required this technology is preferred. UV inkjet gives a very high gloss and tactile impression, which can appeal to certain people. The image details are not as sharp as dry toner but this is not necessarily a requirement. The appearance of both technologies is not influenced when the labels get in touch with the water (condense) on the outside of the bottle.

Augmented Reality – Phoenix of Print?

Classic print producers have to make a greater effort the last years, because of the internet and all these new online technologies. But Augmented Reality has the potential to get the traditional print world ready for the future. Printed magazines, newspapers and the book industry have to make a greater effort since the internet makes information available 24/7 from nearly everywhere in the world. There are many voices saying that the classic print products will be gone in the future. But modern technology, especially digitalization, is not an enemy of print in general. New technologies and advances in printing had a massive effect on magazines and newspapers in the past. So why should it be an unstoppable cradle to the grave? Print Goes 21th Century Augmented Reality could be the answer to that question. During the last years AR has come up to nearly every aspect of modern media, and it is still evolving. There will be lots of new advances and usages of this technology for sure and print can benefit from it. An implementation of AR in classic

print could be a whole new thing and create a reborn of print. AR has the great advantage not to be bound to common physical limitations. There is no limit of word counts or layout space. You can even leave the twodimensionality of printed products. So AR could be a bridge between the classic prints and the digital sphere. Nevertheless, AR has its own borders – you need devices like a smartphone to use it. Therefore the content must have a minimum quality, furthermore there has to be a new standard of content, which will provide the user with a really outstanding experience. Storytelling is Everything Next to high-quality content there will be a need of innovative and effective motivation to use AR. The whole thing has to be so irresistible that the users find the more effort worth. Or in other words: The reader has to think, that the

storytelling is incomplete without the AR experience. In 2016, for example, the New Yorker provided its readers with a 3D subway tour through the city. All you had to do was to install an app and then scan the cover’s subway doors. AR has to create more than just the average amusement or information. It has to go deeper into the story and allow the reader to feel like becoming part of the plot. Videos in a novel, interview snippets in a long informational story, complex 3D explanations based on maps and charts – the possibilities are endless. Rise of The Phoenix? The print world has to evolve along with the digitally society. AR and other similar technologies, too, can be guides to create a new, modern print world, with all these fascinating experiences, digitalization offers publishers, advertisers, and printers alike.

Koenig and Bauer in Asia Pacific While Koenig & Bauer celebrated its 200th anniversary in September 2017, the Asia Pacific branch was congruently exhibiting at Pack Print International 2017 in Bangkok, Thailand. We spoke with Andreas Friedrich, managing director for KBA Asia Pacific, to gather his thoughts and catch up on the company’s regional activities. Congratulations on celebrating 200th anniversary! I started to work at KBA in 2001, right at our headquarters in Wuerzburg where practically all began in 1817 not far from the current location. The milestones of our history were for me pretty much evident on the way to the office and I always found it quite fascinating working for a company with such long tradition.

Andreas Friedrich, managing director for KBA Asia Pacific, Being with Koenig & Bauer since almost 2 decades, yes, it was very exciting and partly emotional when our company turned 200. Two centuries filled with inventions and achievements, not only from the technical point of

view. What a contribution it all had to the development of a society not only in Germany but worldwide is quite remarkable. Happy Birthday, Koenig & Bauer! A major announcement made was the unveiling of the company’s rebranding and new marketing appearance. KBA will now revert back to its original brand name: Koenig & Bauer. In line with the rebranding, what will we see come into effect immediately in the Asia Pacific region? Well, the rebranding refers to our name and also to our ways of advertising, communication and of course, to our future product design. It will take a bit time to do all those changes, also for the agencies worldwide. KBA Asia Pacific will undergo those changes step by step and it will also have influence to our name eventually, but not for this year.

developments for example in the area of folding carton digital printing with a new modern press concept in midsized format called the VariJET 106. With the VariJET 106 it will be very easy to configure a press according to our client’s needs for digital- but even conventional printing and finishing, all done in-line with its modular concept.

on the printing products our machines are producing, but also stands for the passion which we are bringing forward with our team to serve our clients all over the world. I will use this slogan in my coming routines for upcoming company meetings. What are some recent achievements in this region for Koenig & Bauer? Related to our business with new machines, this year we had good success in some major markets in Southeast Asia which is keeping us very busy towards the end and beginning of next year. Among some mid-sized formats we had again success with our large format sheetfed offset presses. Furthermore, we increased our focus on service with an enhanced service work force.

One major topic for us was, and will be, the service together with right training for our customers. Installing a press with excellent technology is one side of the story, showing our customers how to use it on expert level is even more important. We want to show our clients that it is so much worth to invest in decent technology with a little higher price but at the end, the cost per sheet are going down with the higher performance if the technology is understood. We started with this approach already in the middle of this year and the feedback from the market is amazing. What can customers look forward to from Koenig & Bauer? Koenig & Bauer continues to bring new products to our customers, especially for the packaging market. Just to mentioned a view, there will be new

In the course of next year we will also see more and more new printing solutions for the corrugated market: the CorruCUT, the CorruFlex and the digital version the CorruJet which all were just introduced at latest FEFCO event. Koenig & Bauer further continues its ambitions in the field of flexible packaging by promoting high quality and environmental friendly technologies for flexographic printing and lamination, something we will put our heart on also for this region. Besides of the hardware, we will further take one step more to introduce possibilities of network based production planning and control for printing enterprises on base of machine automation and MIS systems. This becomes very important if you want to stay ahead of your game in order to increase productivity of your entire factory. Any last messages? I would like to take the opportunity to thank our customers for their trust in our machines and services. We will constantly adapt to new market situations and are happy to serve our customers on a daily base. I also would like to thank the team of KBA Asia Pacific and our partners in Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines for their great support throughout the whole year. It is not only about the machines, it is also about our customers and our teams based in each country which make great things possible, thank you all for that!

200 Years of Growth

“Koenig & Bauer is well-positioned for the future,” highlighted BolzaSchünemann, who is the sixth generation in the family to lead the company. He opened the press conference presenting on the company’s milestones over the last 200 years, paying special attention to acquisitions the company made between 2002 to 2013. Traditionally analogue, the company previously targeted media-oriented markets such as newspaper, book, magazine and catalogue printing. Today, 90% of turnover from new press sales is accounted for by the growth markets digital and packaging printing and by securities printing. Koenig & Bauer currently holds more than 80% world market share in banknote printing, and a 63% share

in large format and package printing. Only 30% is in commercial web and newspaper printing. "From morning to evening, we meet printed products that were produced on Koenig & Bauer presses: from the directly printed perfume bottle in the bathroom in the morning, the newspaper at the breakfast table, banknotes, credit cards and a wide range of packaging when going shopping, to books or magazines in the evening. The best thing about this is that most of these print products cannot be replaced by online media or computer screens, and the demand is continuing to rise. This makes us optimistic for our future,” said Bolza-Schünemann. Asia to contribute largest growth in Packaging Koenig & Bauer is making ways to be the leading player in packaging printing; the company is already the market leader in the printing of cardboard, metal and glass bodies. Drivers within the packaging sector include the trend towards sophisticated packaging, growth of the world economy, world population, the number of singleperson households, and the rise of online commerce which has high returned-goods ratios.

This region will play a major role in the company’s packaging focus, as “80% of packaging is expected to come from Asia,” said Dr. Mathias Dähn, the company’s Chief Financial Officer. The company also has 80% world market share in metal décor, glass and hollow container printing through the acquisition of German company Kammann Maschinenbau. Koenig & Bauer launched the MetalDecojet, a digital press for metal decorating at MetPark 2017 in Essen, Germany. It announced its first sale of the first sale. The CS MetalCan, a 2-piece beverage can printing machine was also previewed. The CS MetalCan is expected to launch in 2018 following intensive field tests. Dähn added that the machine achieved a “very good initial reaction, and that the big can makers are interested.” Koenig & Bauer is also looking to improve its market share in flexible packaging printing, corrugated board printing and the marking & coding sector. New products including the VariJet 106 digital hybrid press as well as digital, flexo and offset presses for corrugated board, metal sheets and beverage cans are intended to contribute to this.

Within the industrial printing space, Koenig & Bauer introduced the RotaJET VL, which is up to 2.25 m wide and can serve applications such as decorative printing. In order to make up for the drop in demand for web offset presses for newspaper and commercial printing, the company company now plans to expand its services to cover older presses. New services have been offered within the framework of digital transformation. The service turnover for sheetfed and web presses has grown significantly, and is expected to rise to 30% of group turnover. The Zero Tolerance to Loss In 2016, Koenig & Bauer charted its best profitability, with an EBIT of 87.1 million euros. Dr. Dähn credited the increase in the share price from 10 euro at the beginning of 2015, to significantly over 60 Euro now, to Koenig & Bauer’s renewed strategy and development. He further emphasised the company’s “zero tolerance to loss” policy, when it terminated and successfully redesigned all loss-making businesses in 2014. The company also introduced strong corporate governance that enabled accountable management, and no cross-subsidies. "After a decade of declining sales, growth has become the central pillar of our corporate strategy. All business units should contribute to this and work profitably," said Dr Dähn. For 2017, Koenig & Bauer has set itself a goal with a group turnover of approximately 1.25 billion euro and an EBIT margin of around 6%. The planning for the period up to 2021 provides for a growth in sales of 4% p.a. and - depending on the

development of the world economy an annual EBIT margin between 4% and 9%. Jubilee Box Set For the company's birthday, Koenig & Bauer has produced a jubilee box set of commemorative publications entitled "People - Machines - Ideas". The almost 2 kg set consisted of a smallformat hardcover book, a collection of posters, and a magazine.

Presented by Koenig & Bauer’s marketing director, Klaus Schmidt, the three printed products differ greatly in terms of content and design, and are not a chronological enumeration of the events and achievements of the last 200 years. "Our unusual commemorative publication is a printed declaration of love for the past, present and future of print,” said Schmidt.

Fuzhou installs first Roland 700 Evolution machine Fuzhou Huacai Printing Co., Ltd. brings the first ROLAND 700 EVOLUTION four colour sheetfed offset to Fuzhou City. When a company is engaged in the field of education, it is important to use the best tools available for learning to stimulate the mind and facilitate the process of aquiring new knowledge. Such useful things include colourful, nicely printed books and educational materials, produced using a world-class press and cutting-edge technology. Fuzhou Huacai Printing Co., Ltd., based in Fujian Province, has been adequately providing this requirement for a long time now. "We firmly believe that only by relying on the world's most advancd printing technologies can we maintain our reputation for premium printing quality," said Chen Liangqing, general manager of Fuzhou Huacai. "We're very proud of the status and reputation we have been enjoying in the education publishing field for almost 40 years. The challenge is to mantain it, or, if possible, reinforce it."

Founded in 1980, Fuzhou Huacai Printing Co., Ltd. is a state-owned printing enterprise under the Fujian Education Press. Now attached to The Straits Publishing & Distributing Group, it specializes in printing teaching materials. As a key member factory of the Fujian Newspaper Printing Association, Fuzhou Huacai is responsible for printing various newspapers under central ministries, such as the Workers' Daily, Legal Daily and Guangming Daily. However, its business is not limited to those, Fuzhou Huacai also prints brochures, advertisements and leaflets. With more than 200 staff members, a 200-acre facility and fixed assets of over RMB 50 million, Fuzhou Huacai has been powered by advanced printing production equipment. Its annual production capacity: black and white printing 160,000 reams; colour printing 1.28 million colour reams.

Backed by leading printing technology and solid management, Fuzhou Huacai over the years has been providing customers with quality products, often even on short notice. Many of its products have been recognized in Fujian for their industry-wide excellence. Fuzhou Huacai also attaches great importance to green printing. In July 2013, it successfully passed the green printing certification. Fuzhou Huacai, which was established Chen Liangqing, general manager of Fuzhou Huacai

at the beginning of China's economic reforms, has witnessed the rapid growth of the mainland publishing industry. It has spared no effort to ride the momentum and help the industry move further forward. "Since the reform and opening up, as the government and people have paid more attention to the importance of education and knowledge, the education publishing printing has developed rapidly," added Chen. "However, at the same time, the customers' requirements on teaching materials are increasingly demanding. They don't only need excellent print quality, for example,

they also want stable and consistent colour quality - and they want their print orders finished quickly." So Fuzhou Huacai puts emphasis on high productivity and high-speed printing to cope with the customers' demands. On top of that, the company also wants to use green printing materials whenever possible. Manroland Sheetfed has been a reliable partner of Fuzhou Huacai for many years. It's no surprise that the company returned to Manroland Sheetfed when upgrading its printing facility, Fuzhou Huacai went at their goal in a big way:

they brought the first ROLAND 700 EVOLUTION four colour sheetfed offset to Fuzhou City and book and commercial printing in Fujian Province. Due to its wide range of applications, the ROLAND 700 EVOLUTION is suitable not only for packaging printing but also for commercial and publishing printing. "With the successful installation of the four-colour ROLAND 700 EVOLUTION, we are confident in performing our role in the Chinese education printing industry," Chen concluded.

New Color Printing Technique Inspired by Butterflies Researchers from the Technology University of Denmark took Morpho butterflies and peacock plumage as examples to invent a special method for creating structural colors.

nanoscopic pillars of plastic, which are only 60 nanometers thick – 1,500 times thinner than a human hair. Then, we coat it with a semiconductor called Germanium. Finally, a pulse of laser light melts the Germanium just enough to modify its shape and produce the desired color”, team member Anders Kristensen describes the process.

Have you already seen a Morpho butterfly? The sparkling blue of its wings are quite impressive, aren’t they? The mechanism behind this also makes peacock plumage such intense and might soon revolutionize the industry thanks to a new color printing technique invented by Danish scientists. Xiaolong Zhu and his co-workers from the Technology University of Denmark came up with a special method aiming to mass-produce what are known as structural colors. This means that the colors are produced by shapes absorbing and reflecting specific light wavelengths. New Color Printing Technique: A Color That Does Not Fade and Prevents Fraud It also allows for constructing more durable color images as – in contrast to pigments or dyes – structural colors do not fade. Another benefit is that the technology provides a high resolution of 127,000 dots per inch. This makes it possible to print security patterns or watermarks, invisible to the naked eye,

on passports or banknotes to prevent counterfeiting. In order to ensure these features the researchers laid Germanium over plastic pillars: “To paint the surface of objects like credit cards, pens or cars, first, we create

Nature Serving as a Model for the New Color Printing Technique Until now the printer cannot be released because the scientists still need to fix a major issue: In fact, it is not possible to produce green light in this way so far. But as soon as they overcome this hurdle, there is huge potential for the technique: “Its main application would be mass customization. People would buy the exact same car but the color palette of interior elements could be changed simply by firing lasers at it.”

José Maria Camacho, CEO of Rotocobrhi explains that this latest purchase of a Goss Sunday 5000 will better address the retail market. “Retail is a growing market and we have seen more of our business coming from this sector, where the product adds value to the customer experience as well as promoting their merchandise. CGS continues Asia growth with new appointment Eden Kim has been appointed as new Business Development Manager for the region. CGS Publishing Technologies International announced the appointment of Eden Kim as business development manager. Alongside CGS’ regional sales manager, Yan Wei Phin, Kim will be responsible for growing the ASEAN and South Korean region. Based in Singapore, the South Korean native brings with her 12 years of experience in the graphic communications industry. She had her start in the industry in North America as an Applications & Colour Specialist at Fujifilm Canada, before making the move to Asia Pacific in 2012. “My history with CGS began in 2009 when I’ve supported their product while I was at Fujifilm. I known many of the CGS members already and some are my good friends, so I’m very happy to join the team,” said Kim. “The first order of business is to get reacquainted with CGS’ range of solutions. I look forward to visiting our head office in Germany for a full product training so I can best work with our industry partners.” Kim joins CGS after honing her expertise working on various design and print projects with brand management agencies in Australia and Singapore. Most recently, she managed print production in packaging for brands under Procter & Gamble.

48 The Acuity LED 3200R LED UV inkjet printer was first announced in drupa 2016, and leverages on the versatility of the Acuity LED 1600 range of printers. Compared to the Acuity LED 1600, the 3200R printer comes with double the print width — 3.2 metres — and increased print speeds of up to 110 m2/hr. Similar to the 1600 series, the 3200R printer utilises LED UV technology that requires less power and produces less heat than conventional UV curing and other processes.

Typically, larger printing machines are required to produce the printed size that the 3200R printer delivers. Accordingly, the investments required for these machines are higher than that of our 3200R printer,” Sung added. “This high-productivity, yet value-formoney, large format printer will not only bring about significant savings in the long-run but also boost business productivity by reducing reliance on external parties.”

“Users are able to achieve maximum production efficiency by printing on two rolls at the same time; be it the same or different jobs, nested images, duplicates or tiled images. This upgraded printer offers higher productivity and speed at an attractive price tag for a quick return on investment for our customers,” said Selena Sung, Senior Marketing Manager, Fuji Xerox Singapore.

BOBST announced the launch of SPEEDPACK, an automatic packer for corrugated packaging that will allow users to realize the full potential of their BOBST folding-gluing lines. With the highest possible number of batches per hour and very short set-up times, it drastically increases productivity.

The 3200R printer features up to seven ink options as standard (CMYK + light Cyan, light Magenta and White) and uses specially formulated Uvijet inks to reproduce an incredibly wide range of colours with smooth gradations. It is able to print on a wide range of display materials, even on specialist materials like polyester textiles and heat-sensitive media, due to no heat exposure during the LED UV curing process. The instant-curing UV inks grant multi-layer printing with ease. In addition, the 3200R printer is accompanied with a high-density mode for backlit applications.

BOBST launches Speedpack

“SPEEDPACK is a revolutionary corrugated-box packer that gently picks up boxes as they exit the foldergluer and batches them up in exactly the right way – quickly and reliably, while preserving the quality of your

“The 3200R printer is able to deliver superior image quality because it utilises Uvijet LF inks made by Fujifilm. These instant-curing UV inks are a special formulation that easily achieves layer printing such as: whitecolour, colour-white-colour, colourwhite etc. that regular printers using latex inks cannot offer,” said Sung. Fuji Xerox is targeting the graphic communication companies that frequently produce exhibition displays, in-store displays signages particularly soft signages, backlit signs including fabrics, Point-Of-Purchase displays, window and floor graphics, standees and more.

boxes,” said Jacques Reymond, Head of Product Marketing of Business Unit Sheet-fed. “We have listened to what our clients say they most need to optimize their folding-gluing machines and SPEEDPACK delivers exactly that. We believe it sets a new benchmark in this space.” The packer has a fluid operation with minimal footprint and optimal ergonomics and accessibility, which render set up times for repeat orders negligible. This robust packer can process any type of box, while maintaining irreproachable levels of quality. The machine is also completely modular, making it a future-proof investment that can grow with your business. “The machine will help to reduce costs and optimize quality and line efficiencies, enabling a rapid return on investment,” said Emilio Corti, Head of Sales of Business Unit Sheet-fed. “As the most productive packer on the market, we believe SPEEDPACK will become the natural extension of your corrugated folder-gluer.”

50 Tonejet and Rockwell Automation win Innovative Partnership award at InPrint 2017 Tonejet, the only manufacturer of advanced electro-static drop-ondemand digital print engines and Rockwell Automation, the world’s leading company dedicated to industrial automation and information, have been announced as the winners in the ‘Innovative Partnership’ category at this year’s Innovation Awards at InPrint 2017 in Munich. The InPrint Innovation Awards, sponsored by Ricoh, acknowledge significant advances in the industrial print industry, awarding innovative and forward-thinking entrepreneurship in two categories: Innovative Partnerships and Extraordinary Products. The awards take into consideration several themes, including future-oriented partnerships, unusual products, sustainable printing technologies and challenging print surfaces. The Innovative Partnership prize was awarded for the integration between Tonejet and Rockwell Automation in the Tonejet Cyclone Digital 2-piece Can Decorator for direct to shape

metal can printing. The Tonejet Cyclone unites Tonejet’s unique digital print engine with the innovative iTRAK® intelligent transport system from Rockwell Automation. “Winning the Innovative Partnership Award honours the incredible work that has gone into developing the Tonejet Cyclone,” says Simon Edwards, VP of Sales and Marketing at Tonejet. “This system represents a huge leap forward in direct-to-shape metal can printing, with features that enhance quality and efficiency while radically reducing time to market. However, we’re very proud to have been given this award considering the quality of the finalists”. Conventional can printing production has traditionally been hindered by a lack of flexibility in transport and handling processes, meaning that the slowest process dictates the indexing time, and the largest operation dictates the overall size of the machine, which determines the throughput as well as the footprint of the machine. Combining linear and rotary motion, the iTRAK® system delivers a flexible, fully integrated solution that helps machine designers achieve a new paradigm in packaging

and handling efficiency with improved throughput. The Tonejet Cyclone utilises the iTRAK® system to accurately transport the cans during the print process, adjusting to the time and space required for each individual operation. This results in higher productivity than conventional processes allow, and ensures a highquality finish. Tonejet’s highly economical and efficient electro-static drop-ondemand digital print engine allows beverage packaging virtually limitless personalisation and customisation opportunities, without stopping production to change plates or inks. The Tonejet Cyclone with the integrated iTRAK system enables beverage packaging producers to respond quickly to customer demand for seasonal or regional trends, or produce highly diversified product ranges. Tonejet is a member of the Rockwell Automation Partner Network™ program as an OEM Program Participant, Partner Level. Members of the Rockwell Automation OEM Program demonstrate a commitment to offer high-quality, innovative machines and equipment that help manufacturers improve business agility, optimize automation and motion infrastructure, as well as effective interoperability with the safety system, other automation assets within the line and the enterprise solution at the plant.

The Tonejet Cyclone direct-to-can machine, uniting Tonejet’s unique digital print engine with Rockwell Automation’s innovative iTRAK intelligent transport system, has been announced as the winner of the ‘Innovative Partnership’ category at this year’s Innovation Awards at InPrint 2017.
