FOUNDATION 2013 ANNUAL REPORT

The Hospital Foundation was established in 1985 to serve the Hospital by encouraging gift support from individuals and organizations. Today, the Foundation conducts annual and capital campaigns, accepts memorial and planned gifts, coordinates grant applications on behalf of the Hospital to government and private funders, and offers named gift recognition for major donors. The Foundation also oversees invested funds to ensure the long-term future of the Hospital.

esides listing our generous donors, our goal for the Foundation’s Annual Report is to put a human face on our Hospital, and to shine a light on who we are, and what we do, from multiple perspectives. In past years we have focused on our Center for Cancer Care, multiple generations involved with our Hospital, “behind the scenes” staff most patients and visitors never get to meet, and our community connections. This year’s report features a Board member, a volunteer, an employee, a patient, and two physicians. While each story is unique, what connects them is our Hospital’s focus on primary care and chronic disease management; and our beautiful new facility at 49 Lawrence Avenue in Potsdam, which this year was named in memory of Helen Snell Cheel, our largest benefactor ever. Thank you for your interest in, and support of, our Hospital Foundation. We hope you enjoy reading this as much as we enjoyed creating it!

T

hroughout 2013, much of the local media’s attention was focused on Canton-Potsdam Hospital’s efforts to establish a new health care system in our County, through the creation of the Gouverneur Hospital and the St. Lawrence Health System. This project took countless hours of work by people associated with both hospitals, United Helpers, and the Community Health Center of the North Country.

Our Board members, Foundation Board Members, and Guild Members - all local community volunteers - have guided and led our Hospital each step of the way. And our donors, drawn from across our local communities, have helped ensure the Hospital’s financial stability and strength, even as many other Hospitals in New York State are struggling. In 2013 938 donors contributed $671,325 to our Hospital Foundation. We are honored to be a part of this incredibly generous community, and we deeply appreciate the trust and resources you invest with us. On behalf of all of us who work at Canton-Potsdam Hospital, and on behalf of each patient we serve - I thank you.

At the same time, Canton-Potsdam Hospital moved ahead aggressively with a major addition at our Lawrence Avenue facility in Potsdam, which was named for Helen Snell Cheel, our most generous benefactor. Many new physicians and providers were recruited to join our team, and our partnership with the PA training program at Clarkson University was enhanced. We purchased and installed a new CT scanner, renovated our medical/surgical units, and maintained our Hospital-wide focus on quality, safety, and service.

David B. Acker, FACHE

What the media did not report is that none of this would have been possible without tremendous community support.

atients may have noticed the “D.O.” designation after the names of Doctors Kris and Alecia VanWagner (and several other CPH physicians, as well.) D.O. stands for “Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine.” D.O.’s follow the same basic medical school curriculum and are held to the same accreditation standards as MD’s, but the emphasis is more holistic, and the focus is often on primary care and practice in rural or under-served areas. That makes them a perfect fit for Canton-Potsdam Hospital.

student loans to be repaid by the National Health Services Corp. But those very small, very rural areas did not have enough patients to maintain an Ophthalmology practice for Kris. For four years, they lived in Cranberry Lake, while Kris worked here at CPH, and Alecia worked at Clifton-Fine Hospital in Star Lake.

P

Now that Alecia’s four-year obligation is complete, the VanWagners have officially relocated to Potsdam. Contributions to the CPH Foundation helped to finance the purchase, renovation, and expansion of the Helen Snell Cheel Medical Campus on Lawrence Avenue, where they (and many other physicians) now practice; and Foundation donations also purchased the specialized ophthalmologic surgical equipment Kris uses in our OR. “We’re so grateful for all the Hospital did to help us start our practices here,” Kris says. In fact, the VanWagners are generous donors themselves.

The VanWagners knew each other growing up in Sherburne, NY, and started dating while in high school. They married during Alecia’s first and Kris’ second year of medical school. They both worked very hard in medical school, and were selected for truly top-notch residencies in Syracuse. Alecia completed her Family Medicine residency at St. Joseph’s, and Kris was the first D.O. to go through the SUNY Upstate Medical University’s Ophthalmology program.

Their commute is shorter now, but with two fulltime medical practices, a daughter in second grade, and a son in in kindergarten, life can be pretty hectic. Maybe “D.O.” stands for “Definitely Organized.” Or maybe “Doctors, Outstanding.”

“Our roots are in Central New York,” Kris noted. “We definitely wanted to have rural practices.” Alecia needed to work at a location officially designated as “under-served” in order for her

Spencer Thew 10

W

Shortly after joining the Board in 2008, Spence worked with Hospital leaders to select a firm and complete a Master Facility Plan. Since then, it’s been pretty much non-stop, with the Hospital purchasing, renovating, expanding, or constructing buildings. “I volunteered as much as 20 hours per week, while the Cheel Medical Campus was being built. We had a very tight time frame, which meant we had to design ‘on the fly,’ and have total trust and transparency with our contractors. I’ve never been involved in a project like that. There was so much trust and teamwork between the contractors, architects, hospital staff, and me. It was really rewarding, and lots of fun to get my boots muddy and work with the contractor’s staff.”

e knew Hospital Board Member Spencer Thew was willing to go the extra mile for things he cares about. After all, he’d run a dog team more than 1,100 miles in the Iditarod. “I just really like challenging myself,” he tells me. “But I did not know that being a Hospital Board member would also give me the chance to take on big challenges! An engineer by training, Spencer has served 47 years as faculty or adjunct at Clarkson University. At the same time, he founded and managed Atlantic Testing Laboratories, Ltd; his own very successful business. Six years ago he sold the business to his staff of 280 employees, to focus more on his kennel, where he breeds and trains sled dogs, doing presentations and motivational speaking, a private engineering consulting business, and running a “Modern Adirondack Great Camp” lodge at his home in South Colton.

That project may be over, but Spencer is not slowing down. This winter he’ll mush 12 of his 28 dogs in a 300 mile race in Michigan, which should take “about 70 hours to run, with maybe 3-5 hours of sleep.”

It’s not like he had a lot of spare time on his hands, but the Hospital was seeking Board members with engineering and project management experience, and Spencer felt it was time he “gave something back” to the community.

We’re so grateful to Spence, and all our volunteer Board members, for running on our CPH team.

ince her retirement in 2011, and the death of her husband a few months later, Pat Davis has “two new knees, and a new relationship.” What’s not new is her devotion to Canton-Potsdam Hospital.

in the chest. “We were working so hard to control the bleeding, when the heart monitor indicated an arrhythmia, followed by a flat line. The patient’s heart had stopped beating. It was my job to reach inside the chest cavity and begin cardiac massage. I will never forget the feel of that heart, literally in my hand.”

Pat began nursing school in the 1970’s, once her six kids were all in school themselves. In 1976, she accepted a position at Potsdam Hospital, where she worked her entire 37-year career. She spent about half that time taking care of inpatients on a surgical floor, and then transitioned to working in the OR.

A big reason Pat retired was to take care of her husband, who had Alzheimer’s Disease. When he passed away, she felt “lost and useless. I kept thinking, ‘now what will I do?” One day, after being at the hospital with a family member, she decided to volunteer here. Now she works one morning a week on our Ambulatory Surgery Unit, and one morning a week at our Cheel Medical Campus. “I didn’t really know that I was depressed, but after I started volunteering, it was like the clouds lifting, she tells me. “I absolutely love it.”

She’s certainly seen a lot of changes over the years. “When I began working it was around the time Canton and Potsdam were merging, and the hospital’s reputation wasn’t very good. I remember hearing a woman I knew say “I wouldn’t take anybody to Potsdam Hospital,” and then, about 20 years later, hearing that same woman say “I wouldn’t go anywhere else.” We’ve come a long way, and I feel really proud to have been a part of that change.”

And we absolutely love our volunteers like Pat.

The most memorable moment of Pat’s nursing career occurred late one night, while she and our surgical team were working on a patient who had been shot

Karissa Castanier 18

arissa Castanier is a patient registration clerk who really understands what it’s like to be a patient. At just 22 years old, she’s already undergone six brain surgeries.

K

records, and patient registration for primary care, orthopedics, ophthalmology, and OB/GYN. Her coworkers in billing even held a benefit to help her pay off medical bills and travel expenses.

At age 13, Karissa was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer more commonly seen in older men. She’d been experiencing terrible headaches, nausea, dizziness, and “some pretty strange behavior issues.” That diagnosis led to multiple surgeries – to extract the tumor, remove scar tissue, place a shunt, and then handle subsequent complications. She spent a lot of time traveling back and forth to Burlington and then to Syracuse for the neurosurgery specialists not available here.

“Things are much better now. I’m officially in remission,” she smiles. “No surgeries in the past two years!” She works full time and also helps care for a woman with Alzheimer’s disease. Along the way she married her high school sweetheart, and purchased a house. “I’m just normal,” she says, “no special treatment, though I do still have bad headaches. I just try to keep smiling, and keep going.” Karissa’s goal is to become a nurse. “My nurses were so awesome. I would really love to do that, though it’s hard for me to commit to the time and expense of nursing school right now, after all I’ve been through. There’s still a lot of uncertainty about my future.”

At the same time, she tells me, it felt like she had “the whole Canton-Potsdam Hospital family” pulling for her here at home. Karissa’s Mom and another family member work at the hospital, and several different physicians, PA’s, and Nurse Practitioners were all directly involved in her care.

One thing is not uncertain. Karissa’s brain, and heart, are definitely in the right place.

Two days before her 18th birthday, Karissa applied to become a hospital employee herself. Since then, she’s worked in billing, medical

The Linda Richards Society L

inda Richards, America’s first nurse, was born in West Potsdam in 1841. She was one of five students enrolled in the first nurse-training program at New England Hospital for Women and Children. They worked 16 hours a day, and slept in the wards along with their patients. Pay was $1 per week, with 3 hours time off every 14 days. Linda was the only student to complete the program, and in 1873 she received the first nursing diploma issued in the United States. Miss Richards went on to devote her life to serving others, as a nurse and nursing teacher. In her honor, our Foundation created the Linda Richards Society, which recognizes those who help others through their annual gifts to our Hospital.

The Foster and French Society B

equests from Henry Foster and Gilbert French created in our Hospital in 1920, and today bequests continue to help us move forward. In 2013 we were honored to receive a bequest from long-time Russell resident, friend, and donor Irene Jenne. In 2013 we were also pleased to dedicate the Helen Snell Cheel Medical Campus, in recognition of the largest bequest in our Hospital’s history. Bequests are added to our Hospital’s long-term investments, where they help secure the future of our Hospital and the health of our community. Our goal is to protect the original bequests, and never spend those gifts. Meanwhile, earnings from the investments help cover our Foundation’s operating expenses, and the funds themselves have been used as collateral for financing recent major projects. A bequest is truly the “last, best way” to demonstrate your values. We invite you to contact the Foundation for more information about including the Foundation in your own will or estate plan. 20

Ways to Give

Where the Money Goes

Outright Gifts:

W

The Annual Fund

If a donor places restrictions on their gift, for specific departments or services within the Hospital, it goes directly to the Hospital for budget items that fit the donor restrictions - like new equipment, technology, or physical renovations. For example, a gift restricted for our Obstetrics Unit might be used toward purchase a new infant warmer, while a gift restricted for our inpatient medical/surgical floors might purchase new patient beds.

e do not use contributions to cover the Hospital’s dayto-day operating expenses.

Cash, check, stock, credit card, or online gifts are gratefully accepted. These gifts immediately “go to work” for the Hospital. (also called the Linda Richards Society) supports the purchase of new equipment and the expansion of programs and services. Members of the Linda Richards Society are included in this annual report and on a donor list near the main entrance to the Hospital.

Memorial Gifts

are a unique way you can honor the memory of a special person. Those for whom we have received more than $100 in memorial donations are permanently listed in a display near the main entrance to the Hospital.

Gifts of Gratitude are a special way to say “thank you” to a physician, nurse, or other health care provider, for taking care of you or a loved one. We’ll be sure to let the honoree know about your thoughtful donation!

If a donor makes an unrestricted gift, 75% of the gift is used for whatever capital budget items (equipment or projects) are most needed by the Hospital. The remaining 25% is added to the Foundation’s long-term investments, which now total about $13 million.

Many companies match charitable gifts made by employees, retirees, and directors. We encourage you to enquire whether your company matches gifts.

Bequests and other “planned gifts” are also added to our long-term investments. Invested prudently, and managed carefully, our investment funds provide substantial, consistent, and permanent funds to the Hospital, without ever becoming depleted. Our policy and practice is to hold those gifts in perpetuity; meaning the principal remains intact, while a very small percentage is used to cover the Foundation’s expenses.

Special Gifts: Individuals making their first gift of $2,000 or more may choose to have an engraved brick added to our healing garden. Gifts of $25,000 or more may be recognized by naming a specific hospital room, department, or service, as appropriate.

Planned Gifts:

Any gift that you decide to give now, but that we do not actually receive until some time in the future, is a “planned gift.” The simplest to make, and by far the most common, is a bequest in your will.

In recent years we have “put our invested funds to work” by using them as collateral on major projects – including renovations at EJ Noble in Canton, and the purchase, renovation, and addition to the former St. Mary’s School building in Potsdam, now named the Cheel Medical Campus.

Other types of planned or deferred gifts may give you special income and/or tax advantages. They can play a valuable role in strengthening your own long-term financial health, while enabling you to leave a lasting legacy that would perhaps not otherwise be affordable. We would be happy to work with you and your attorney or financial advisor on a gift from your IRA, a charitable gift annuity, trust, or gift of life insurance. 21

Max Fobare 22

s the owner of Fobare’s Ambulette Service, Max Fobare spent 30 years transporting countless patients for medical tests, appointments, and treatments. He was not, however, so great about taking care of his own health.

A

provided me with a free blood pressure monitor and a scale to take home. I didn’t know a hospital would do that! All the people at CPH were wonderful: the nurses, housekeepers, kitchen staff, everyone. I even thought the food was excellent.”

“I didn’t feel very good for a while,” he tells me. “Actually, it was four or five years. But you know how men are: we do not like going to the doctor.” Finally, he did go see a physician (not affiliated with CantonPotsdam Hospital) near his home in Moira. “He put me on prednisone and I had quite a reaction to it. I gained 26 pounds of fluid in two weeks. He told me to go to the Emergency Room, and that’s when I decided it was time to come to Canton-Potsdam Hospital.”

For the past two months, Max’s CPH case manager has been checking in with him periodically. Max reports that he hasn’t felt this good in years. He’s taking new medications, sleeping better, and has lost 35 pounds since his hospitalization. His energy is back, which is important, because he’s busy playing percussion and pedal steel guitar in a local band. “Being a percussionist is like being a graduate of the Dale Carnegie course,” he tells me. “It builds confidence, draws a lot of attention, and it’s a great way to win friends and influence people.”

Max was admitted, and spent a few days in the hospital. He was severely anemic, and had a massive blood transfusion. He also went through a battery of tests and was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure.

Max has three grown children – all accomplished musicians themselves. And he has a wide circle of friends from his church and his band. “God has blessed me richly,” he tells me. “And now it’s like I have a whole new start. I’m just so grateful to CPH for helping me to feel like myself again.”

Because of that diagnosis, Max was enrolled in the hospital’s Chronic Disease Management Program. He met with a case manager, and got set up to see a physician for follow-up after his discharge. “They

Our Guilds

W

e are “doubly fortunate” to have two Hospital Guilds working on our behalf: the Potsdam Hospital Guild, which was established in the 1930’s, and the Edward John Noble Guild, which was established in Canton in the 1950’s. From the earliest days, when Guild members sewed bed linens and bandages, they have been an integral part of our organization.

E.J. Noble Guild volunteers devoted hundreds of hours to the creation of a beautiful butterfly garden at the E.J. Noble Building In Canton.

Each Guild conducts its own fund-raising and community outreach – ranging from soup lunches and holiday bazaars, to running the Hospital Gift Shop. The two Guilds work together on an annual golf tournament. Together, the two Hospital Guilds contribute more than $100,000 per year to our Hospital Foundation. Their contributions are used to purchase medical equipment and add services to benefit our patients, with special emphasis on projects that serve women and children. In recent years the Guilds have funded digital mammography, neonatal monitors and infant warmers, and numerous other projects, including sizeable gifts for our Center for Cancer Care, and the addition at the EJ Noble Building in Canton.

Congratulations to Eileen Horton, Volunteer Extraordinaire, for receiving the President's Call to Service Award for her over 4,000 hours of lifetime service to the Potsdam Guild Gift Shop.
