One issue still on the plate is the Eastern Livestock issue. I believe only the court system will get this problem worked out, with the oversight by those in the industry who have a vested interest.

I thank you, as members for your kind words of encouragement this year. It has been an exciting opportunity for me- one I will not soon forget. I look forward to working with Don Reynolds in 2013. KCA Convention to Offer an Educational & Entertaining Lineup James Comer

haring Our Success” is a good way to look at the 2013 Kentucky Cattlemen’s Association convention in Lexington. Kentucky beef producers will have the opportunity to compare notes with each other, hear from beef and forage experts, and visit the popular Ag Industry Trade Show.

This year, we are fortunate to have as our special guest Dr. Emil John Pollak, director of the USDA Meat Animal Research Center in Clay Center, Neb. Dr. Pollak is scheduled to speak during the opening session on Jan. 11. He will talk about the sustainability project being funded by the beef check off and some of the research being conducted at the MARC. Dr. Pollak has published or co-published numerous papers on livestock genetics, genomics, and reproduction. This is an outstanding opportunity for Kentucky producers to hear from a nationally known expert in his field.

Dr. Nevil Speer, professor of animal science at Western Kentucky University, will share the 2013 market outlook the afternoon of Jan. 11. At the Forages at KCA program, researchers will talk about pasture finishing beef, challenges and opportunities in forages, and the health advantages of beef. An exciting women’s program and educational activities for our juniors also are on the schedule.

Finally, we will have the opportunity to thank Mike Bach for his year of

service as KCA president and welcome the 2013 president, Don Reynolds.

Once again, we will welcome our friends from the Burley Tobacco Growers Cooperative Association, who will hold their annual meeting on the afternoon of Jan. 11.

The KCA and the BTGCA will co-host the trade show with dozens of vendors promoting a vast array of products and services. The Kentucky Department of Agriculture will have a booth featuring the state veterinarian’s office, our marketing office, and our forage testing program. Convention Kicks Off New Year Dave Maples

S

tarting a new year for me brings with it some emotions and excitement. My thoughts go back and reflect on the pass year, most generally events and more so, people. I think of the people that we have lost and reflect on their life, and I think of their families. Then my feelings turn to the new lives that our beef community has been blessed with. The major weather events are always life changers and this past year was no exception. The early March tornados hit Kentucky hard and I am so pleased with our cattlemen and the extension agents for stepping up and helping our fellow cattlemen that were

in need. Then we had the drought, what more can be said about the drought?

KCA’s New Year always starts off fast. Our Annual Convention starts on Thursday, January 10 and goes through Saturday, morning January 12th in Lexington. I hope you plan on attending; this is a great time to reconnect with fellow cattlemen and meet and make new friends. The convention has become a meeting of many smaller meetings. Groups like the Allied Industry Council, Kentucky Livestock Marketing Association, and the Kentucky Dairy Development Council, Kentucky Cattlemen’s Foundation, Burley Tobacco Growers Coop, the County Presidents and others will hold meetings. Last year just about every livestock marketing firm was in attendance. If you are a County President I would encourage you to attend the County Presidents dinner where you can meet other presidents and learn what they are doing in the different

counties.

The trade show is always fun and is a great place to see the new products that our farm supply companies have to offer.

The Friday morning breakfast in the trade show has become a big success and is a time to socialize and visit the different trade show booths.

On the education front our special guest this year is Dr. John Pollack with the Meat Animal Research Center in Clay Center, Nebraska. Dr. Pollack has a storied past from his work at Cornell University. Today he leads a group of the top beef cattle scientists in the world.

Our industry has come a long way from a technology stand point but it will really be exciting to hear just what work is under way now at the US Meat Animal Research Center. Dr. Pollack will be a very interesting speaker with cutting edge information.

Scott George, a dairyman from Cody, Wyoming will be the 2013 NCBA

President. Scott will be with us this year and he will bring a big smile and a unique humor to the position. I think you will enjoy getting to know Scott George.

Daren Williams will be on the agenda his topic will be about “telling your story”. Telling our story has become very important and we all have a story to tell.

Often we just need to be encouraged.

One program that Daren heads up is the Masters of Beef Advocacy (MBA).

This is an online program that I would encourage all beef producers to take. It is a program for beef producers and can be taken at home. It will take some time but is worth the effort. It is free and is very well organized and it will be worth your time.

The convention is very important to Kentucky’s Cattle industry as well as the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Association.

Kentucky’s cattle industry is a big industry and this is a great time to show case the activities, businesses and people that make our industry a great industry. I hope to see you in January.

Animal Safety Warnings and Precautions The product is likely to cause tissue damage at the site of injection, including possible granulomas and necrosis. These reactions have disappeared without treatment. Local tissue reaction may result in trim loss of edible tissue at slaughter.

Observe cattle for injection site reactions. If injection site reactions are suspected, consult your veterinarian. This product is not for intravenous or intramuscular use. Protect product from light.

LONGRANGE™ (eprinomectin) has been developed specifically for use in cattle only. This product should not be used in other animal species.

When to Treat Cattle with Grubs LONGRANGE effectively controls all stages of cattle grubs. However, proper timing of treatment is important. For the most effective results, cattle should be treated as soon as possible after the end of the heel fly (warble fly) season.

Environmental Hazards Not for use in cattle managed in feedlots or under intensive rotational grazing because the environmental impact has not been evaluated for these scenarios.

Other Warnings: Underdosing and/or subtherapeutic concentrations of extended-release anthelmintic products may encourage the development of parasite resistance. It is recommended that parasite resistance be monitored following the use of any anthelmintic with the use of a fecal egg count reduction test program.

TARGET ANIMAL SAFETY Clinical studies have demonstrated the wide margin of safety of LONGRANGE™ (eprinomectin). Overdosing at 3 to 5 times the recommended dose resulted in a statistically significant reduction in average weight gain when compared to the group tested at label dose. Treatment-related lesions observed in most cattle administered the product included swelling, hyperemia, or necrosis in the subcutaneous tissue of the skin. The administration of LONGRANGE at 3 times the recommended therapeutic dose had no adverse reproductive effects on beef cows at all stages of breeding or pregnancy or on their calves.

Not for use in bulls, as reproductive safety testing has not been conducted in males intended for breeding or actively breeding. Not for use in calves less than 3 months of age because safety testing has not been conducted in calves less than 3 months of age.

randpa Tommy was reminiscing, “It’s a shame everybody couldn’t go through the Great Depression.”

I know what he meant. I think. He didn’t mean it like “It’s a shame everybody hadn’t been in a concentration camp or had polio.” He was remarking that most of us Baby Boomers and younger are unable to appreciate how technology has pampered us. There was no safety net back then. Grandpa Tommy spent the Dirty 30’s in the depths of the Dust Bowl in Syracuse, Kansas. Then the first half of the 40’s he was on a Navy vessel in the Pacific.

He passed away without seeing our OsamaConomy. The hard times that today’s generations are suffering under, began on 9/11/2001. We sank to the bottom immediately. Unemployment in 2002 was 7.5%. We pulled ourselves out and by 2007 unemployment had fallen to 4.5%. Then we over-reached and crashed again in 2008, where we have wallowed for four years with 8-10% unemployment. But this whole series of events in the last 11 years began on 9/11/01.

During this OsamaConomy, a large percent of our population has had to tighten our belts, however a smaller 10% has suffered mightily. But, in Grandpa Tommy’s defense, just a very tiny percent of those of us caught in the vise of OsamaConomy have gone hungry or have no roof over their head.

Present-day technology has allowed the majority of the unemployed access to computers, cell phones, vehicles, televisions, emergency health care and school for their kids.

The safety net that is helping

these “victims” includes family, friends, churches, private giving and government programs financed by those still working and paying taxes. This safety net has prevented any mass migration of the unemployed seeking work. If there had been a mass migration, North Dakota and Wyoming would have doubled in population! The ten percent unemployed have been able to stay in familiar surroundings and are able to get temporary assistance to ride it out.

The Great Depression had 25% unemployment at its peak and lasted 9 – 10 years. Only the outbreak of World War II brought an end to it.

It is the prayer of all of us, that our foundering leaders will get their collective heads out of the mud, step out of the way and let America go back to work. It took us 5 years to recover after 9/11. In 2007 the federal government collected a record-high annual tax revenue from the private sector.

That money came from people working and paying taxes, from Bill Gates to the legal immigrant mowing his lawn.

We all breathed a sigh of relief when our soldiers finally sent Osama Bin Laden to hell. There seems to be a lot of blame thrown around about who should bear the burden of our toxic economy. I don’t have any doubt. It was him. Osama was this generation’s Hitler, Ho Chi Minh, Yamamoto and Small Pox. In 2005 I went to New Orleans after Katrina to muck out houses.

There were two kind of people that showed up; those who came to help and those who came to blame. In this OsamaConomy we’ve been barraged with ads and debates by those who come to blame. My head is ringing.

But I know we will get out of this mess. Not because I have faith in the government, but because I have faith in those who get up every day and come to work, like Grandpa Tommy did, just doin’ his part.

Census Gives Farmers a Voice in Their Future

K

entucky farm operators along with farm operators across America are about to participate in the nation’s largest, most detailed statistical portrait of U.S. agriculture--the 2012 Census of Agriculture. The census will provide a comprehensive picture of agriculture at the county, state and national levels. America’s farmers have the opportunity to make their voices heard and help shape the future of agriculture for years to come. The Kentucky Field Office of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) in Louisville will coordinate agricultural census activities for the Commonwealth.

“Many changes have occurred throughout Kentucky agriculture in the five years since the last Census of Agriculture was taken,” says Leland Brown, Director of NASS’ Kentucky Field Office. The need for reliable statistics about Kentucky’s farmers has never been greater. Conducting the agricultural census is the only way to get information to measure how successful many of the state initiatives and marketing assistance programs have been. The success

of these new programs and how fast and how much they have grown will be shown by what producers report on the 2012 Census of Agriculture.

According to Brown, the Agricultural Census shows a geographic picture of American and Kentucky agriculture: the changing crop and livestock patterns in agriculture, economic conditions and operating costs of farm operators, and the sources of marketing and income. The Census of Agriculture provides information that is not available anywhere else – information that benefits agricultural producers and their communities.

Another important piece of information compiled and published from the 2012 Census of Agriculture will be the count of farms by different categories: size, type, operator characteristics, and value of sales. This count is made for each county in Kentucky. Many of the extension programs administered in Kentucky receive funds for these projects based on the census farm counts by county.

NASS will mail out Census forms in late December, to collect data for the 2012 calendar year. Completed

forms are due by February 4, 2013.

Producers can fill out the Census online via a secure website, www. agcensus.usda.gov, or return their form by mail. Federal law requires all agricultural producers to participate in the Census and requires NASS to keep all individual information Agriculture census data serve as a foundation for agricultural statistics.

They are widely used by farm organizations, legislators, and those who provide goods and services to farmers and ranchers.

The census report form is detailed, but all information on individual farm operations is kept confidential by law (Title 7, U.S. Code).

Statistical results are aggregated and published only in geographical summaries to prevent identification of individual farms.

A farm, for census purposes, is any place from which at least $1,000 worth of agricultural products were produced and sold or could have been sold during the census year.

Because a key strength of the census is providing detailed facts about small farms, every response counts-whether from a large or very small

operation.

Completing the 2012 Census of Agriculture report form may be the best few minutes Kentucky farmers can invest in the future of the Commonwealth’s agriculture. By responding completely and accurately, Kentucky farmers can make the 2012 Census of Agriculture an effective tool to help chart the future of the Commonwealth’s top industry.

“We’re committed to making this Census the best count ever. It’s about the future of agriculture and rural communities in Kentucky,” Brown said. “Regardless of how large or small their operation is or what kinds of products they produce, Kentucky farmers will help themselves and their communities by filling out the Census of Agriculture and returning it promptly,” he added.

“We want farmers to know: the Census of Agriculture is their voice, their future and their responsibility.”

griculture Secretary Tom Vilsack made the following statement today about the 2012 farm income forecast from USDA’s Economic Research Service: “Today’s forecast is heartening.

It confirms that American farmers and ranchers remained impressively resilient in 2012, even with tough odds due to one of the worst droughts in more than a generation.

Thanks to its ability to remain com14

petitive through thick and thin, U.S. agriculture is stronger today than at any time in our nation’s history, supporting and creating good-paying American jobs for millions. While down slightly from the August forecast, today’s estimates for net farm income are the second-highest since the 1970s, while total farm household income is expected to rise. At the same time, the positive trend of falling debt ratios continue.

The forecast suggests that strong farm income should remain a pos-

itive factor in carrying farmers and ranchers into the 2013 growing season. But as one season comes to an end and another lies on the horizon, we must continue to stand with America’s farming families and rural communities, providing help and assistance to those who need it. This year, the farm safety net showed its mettle and merit, helping to deliver peace of mind to thousands of farmers and ranchers dealing with losses caused by natural disasters.

Farm Service Conservation Loans Available LEXINGTON, KY

U

SDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) State Executive Director John W. McCauley, announced that funds are now available for Guaranteed Conservation Loans. Conservation loans allow farmers and ranchers to implement conservation practices on their land that will help protect natural resources.

“Guaranteed Conservation Loans are a useful alternative to help opera-

tors implement any Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) approved conservation practice including, but not limited to, waste management systems, conservation structures or water conservation measures,” said McCauley.

Unlike other FSA guaranteed loan programs, Conservation Loans are not limited to family size farms. Operators who may not normally qualify for an FSA guaranteed farm operating or ownership loan could be eligible for a

Guaranteed Conservation Loan.

According to McCauley, the Guaranteed Conservation Loan limit is $1,302,000 and interest rates and terms will vary. The maximum guarantee FSA can issue is 75 percent.

A streamlined application process is available for applicants with a strong financial position. The streamlined process reduces paperwork requirements and eliminates the requirement to provide a cash flow statement and supplementary documentation.

Interested applicants who do not already have a conservation plan approved by NRCS should work with their local NRCS staff to develop a conservation plan. As with other guarantees, lenders can reduce risk, increase liquidity and offer lower rates by selling the guaranteed portion in the secondary market.

Then our group traveled to Hidden Valley in the Popular River area to J. J. Tucker’s Registered Angus and Polled Hereford herds. Showing some great bulls of both breeds then onto the wagons toured pastures and viewed some

great fall calving cows and calves. For dry weather pastures, I will not attempt to grade these cows, but I suspect they would be right at the very top of ratings.

We left Hidden Valley and traveled to the Breckinridge Extension office for lunch, special thanks to the ladies that are members who prepared lunch for us. After lunch, we traveled to the B&A Angus Farm owners who are Paul Beauchamp and Ona Alexander. We saw some great young bulls that had

been used on the Eden Shale Farm.

We lucked out and saw another great group of cows and calves. Paul shared with the group how Dr. Les Anderson was working with them on the same sex semen with some of their cows. After viewing a lot of cattle, Mr. Beauchamp showed the group some crossbreds they are working on, and “Wow what Bulls!”

Paul then guided us to a very high hill on their farm overlooking a very beautiful area, “close to the heaven maybe.” Leaving the B&A Angus Farm

we traveled across the county to Brad Chambliss Horned Hereford Farm.

Home of some very nice Hereford bulls just right for service with some great cows with fall calves. Brad has a beautiful farm and with a great working facilities.

I would like to thank all of the seed stock producers on our second tour.

a production sale for 109 consecutive years, a record in the business. That sale lasts for 12 hours and attracts over 1,700 people from around the world.

The ranch includes almost 8,000 acres with an annual rainfall of 13” of which half is snow. The problem is that the snow melts off before the ground thaws so much of that leaves the area.

They get only one cutting of alfalfa a year. Their excellent soils and native grasses produce cows known for their maternal abilities and performance.

They sell about 500 bulls a year and the herd average is an unbelievable 880lbs at the 205 days of age. All of this is accomplished with little to no supple-

he Franklin County Cattlemen decided to explore North & South Dakota for their Educational Tour this year. Between trying to accommodate everyone’s schedule, the tobacco harvest and before winter cattle feeding began we finally ended up going in late October. This turned out to be an interesting time to head north for several reasons.

The ranch and extension folks I talked to up there assured me that the weather was usually just a little colder up there than in Kentucky that time of year but it was drier so the threat of snow wasn’t an issue. They also informed me that it was the opening of pheasant hunting season, which we found out is a major celebration up there.

Twelve of us left out for Fargo packed for a broad range of conditions and ready for another cattlemen’s adventure. We arrived that evening and met Carl Dahlen, North Dakota Beef Cattle Specialist and his wife Roberta, a swine researcher at NDSU, who treated us to a visit to an intercollegiate rodeo on campus. Several local schools were competing and it was a lot of fun with our ringside seats. The new part for us was that women competed in the roping and tying events, and the tying involved goats. The next morning we met at The Shack for breakfast and discovered the Dakota’s love affair with warm sticky buns and why. They were big and tasted excellent.

Carl gave us an overview of the state, explaining that the Missouri river not only physically divides the state but in many other ways too. The eastern half is mostly farming while the western half considers themselves westerners and focuses on ranching. The state only has about 600,000 residents but 65,000 have recently arrived with the oil boom.

Boom towns have increased tenfold in only a few months and growing pains are evident. About 2/3rds of the agricultural income comes from cattle. The 18

Grain prices and weather patterns are causing corn production to creep west and north several hundred miles though into what was formerly only pasture or range.

We spent the rest of the morning touring the NDSU research facilities and getting vans stuck in the mud & muck. Apparently our arrival had signaled the end of the drought there, much to their relief. NDSU has a 200 head herd of shorthorn, Simmental and angus cross crows for their research which includes feeding studies. They calve in January which is brutal there so they have sheltered facilities for the newborns. One interesting tidbit

learned was that calves with frostbitten ears tend to do poor throughout life due to hidden foot problems from that same exposure.

We left our gracious hosts, the Dahlens, who had given up a Sunday morning for us and started our leisurely drive west. We passed through the hometown of writer Louis L’Amour and the world’s largest buffalo and then enjoyed miles of flat, treeless prairie, few travelers and even fewer farmsteads.

Mandan, nestled between the Missouri River and the Badlands, was to be our home for the night. The next morning we met up with Kelly Schaff of Schaff Angus Valley, a well know name in the Angus business.

The ranch was homesteaded by Kelly’s great grandfather in 1902 and has had

mental feeding. With new SAV caps in exchange for our local Kentucky gifts of appreciation and some fresh pictures of pheasant on the run we said our goodbyes and double backed north.

On the other side of Bismarck along the river is a feedlot that we had heard of and were very interested in finding out more about. Missouri River Feeders is a 10,000 head feedlot that finishes cattle on silage along with distillers grains and a few other commodities.

That’s nothing new to us but what we were interested in was their export operation. Alex Hays was kind enough to show us around and explain their USDA inspected quarantine herds that get shipped to Eastern Europe/Western Asia. It seems that Kazahkastan, while trying to survive the breakup of the for-

COUNTY NEWS mer U.S.S.R., consumed most of their breeding cattle in order to survive. Now they are importing groups of registered Hereford and Angus cows to start new herds there thanks to a subsidy offered by their government. MRFs sends several thousand head, 185-195 at a time on a plane out of Fargo for a 22 hour flight to their new home which is very similar to the Dakotas.

Leaving the feedlot we passed a smaller lot of PBR rodeo bulls which fled in fear when we stopped to look,

go figure. Our destination that night was west into the badlands of the Roosevelt National Park. We managed to get rooms in the town of Dickinson on the edge of the oil boom (I was warned early on that rooms would be at a premium due to the boom and pheasant hunting). This town seemed overwhelmed with drilling and pipeline construction trucks. That night you could see the flames where the wells were burning off methane gases from fracking operations. We were told

that a common hourly wage in the oil fields was $40 (the feedlot mentioned that they couldn’t keep help due to being siphoned off for the oil work), a truck driver straight out of high school could make six figures easily there. We saw the badlands at dusk and realized that though beautiful, they were aptly named. Erosion there is measured in inches per year.

The next morning broke rainy and cool – again, and we loaded up early for our long drive into South Dakota

and the Black Hills before heading east through the Badlands. We soon realized how easy it was going to be to rack up our 1,679 total miles as the country unfolded before us with miles of asphalt ahead and little to break up the monotony – or the wind. We passed through Belle Fourche, the town’s claim to fame is that it is currently the geographic center of the United states.

We stopped for lunch in Sturgis then hit the road again in order to visit with rancher Alan Bishop.

Mr. Bishop’s ranch of almost 5,000 acres was in sight of Mt. Rushmore. He took us out to a point on a rise to view the mountain and explain his operation near what he said was a “windbreak”, a lone tree about 300 yards away! At least the winds had calmed from the 60-70 mph sustained “breeze” they had the week before. He raises alfalfa and grazes brome grass with about 18” of rainfall on high selenium soils. He only has two water holes in the 1,000 acre field we drove through to view his herd.

He said his greatest challenge is trying to rotate pastures when half of the year the grasses are dormant.

This area in the foot of the Black Hills is what he calls the “banana belt” where they get a thaw for a few weeks in January. Another interesting feature is that the tree line is slowly creeping down from the mountains and onto the prairie. He overwinters with a Body Condition Score of 4-5 on about 15 acres per pair. We went back to his house to warm up and were greeted with fresh coffee and homemade cookies thanks to his mom. We found out he had a niece at UK and invited him to visit and we’d return the hospitality.

We left just in time to see Mt Rushmore at dusk where we joined a few other hardy souls who ventured out to see the rock. We hung out until after dark in the rain to see the monument which they lite up briefly every evening.

It was worth it although most of us thought it looked smaller than expected but still magnificent.

We spent the night in Custer in a 1950’s motel, The Rocket, a neat old motel that we settled into just as the snowflakes were starting. After a hardy breakfast with the locals we planned to visit Crazy Horse before a mad dash across the Badlands for our next stop late in the afternoon. He feels that this loss of diversity affects the land as well as the community. As a result, his natural resources are his highest priority for managing his 8,000 acres.

Mr. Faulstich starting using wildlife as his barometer to measure whether his ranching practices were effective or not.

The memorial, though not yet complete, was beautiful as the snow blanketed the evergreens.

We left before we were able to adequately tour the Native American Museum but we had a long way to go and a short time to get there. We made a pit stop at Walls Drug just to say we’d been there (and bought our required souvenirs). We also made the unfortunate stop for lunch at a family diner at one of the bigger “towns” on the way.

We stopped when they were closing after feeding a bunch of hunters with hangovers and they weren’t too happy to see us but fed us anyway.

We finally arrived at the Jorgensen Ranch, a family operation that was settled in 1909 by their great grandfather.

The ranch has evolved to encompass cattle, farming and hunting. They crop almost 20,000 acres of diversified grains and forage which lends itself to the habitat for hunting pheasant. They sell about 3,000 bulls a year. Many go to cooperators and are brought back as proven 2 and 3 year olds for final sale.

About 20 potloads of bulls go to the south east each year.

COUNTY NEWS using polywire and fence-weans his calves with the same hot wire system which he claims is less traumatic and results in healthier happier calves. He’s razing his cattle with no supplemental feed in a very harsh environment. His low elevation usually gets a first freeze in August and lasts until mid-May with temperature swings from a -90F windchill to 110F in the summer.

While in the area we stopped in to see David Fremark’s cow/calf and feedlot operation. He feeds around 6,000 head using distillers grains from ethanol production nearby but is finding that silage is cheaper now. With the increasing regulations for confined feeding operations he decided to hire a company to monitor his operation to help keep him in compliance. The manure is spread on a portion of their 15,000 acres of cropland which now includes soybeans, something he said was not even grown there 20 years ago.

His cowherd totals almost 2,000 head but they are broken down into groups of 3-500 and grazed behind hot

wires. This area is feed with artisanal springs which he uses to his advantage.

Not only does it flow freely from the ground but it comes out at around 80F. Of his 15-20 employees he still has cowboys to ride herd on horses but finds that he uses ATVs a lot more now.

Most every trip we try and visit a livestock auction just to see how they operate and gain a little insight into the market there. This year we stopped in on Hub City Livestock, the largest in South Dakota which also happens to be family owned and operated. Steve Hellwig gave us a tour of the facilities which can hold 8-9,000 head and typically sells 6,000 on sale days. They also still sell about 3-400 sheep a week but this is half of what it was 20 years ago.

They buy around 4,000 roll bales of hay a year since it usually takes producers several days to bring in a calf crop and they must be fed and watered until sale date. After a good lingering visit with some order buyers in the office we traded KCA caps for Hub City Livestock

caps and headed to the Bieber Red Angus ranch.

Two generations of the Biebers met us at their family operation. The ranch was started by Ron and Lois but is evolving into the hands of his son Craig and his wife Peggy. Craig lamented that he loved ranching but as they grew he had become more of a manager of people and did less and less hands-on work. We got a tour of their 800 cow operation which sells about 350 bulls a year. The cows were grazing recently harvested corn fields and were in great condition. Peggy had made arrangements for lunch at the café down the road which was appropriately named 10/45 due the road intersection. We had a long enjoyable meal of German based food in the company of an enjoyable ranch family.

Our last scheduled stop for our seven day trip had another Kentucky connection. Frank Moore, Director of Operations at Glacial Lakes Energy Ethanol Plant, spent many years in state government here and was excited

to meet our group and finally talk to someone without an “accent”. We got a great behind the scenes tour of how an ethanol plant worked and they patiently answered all our questions about the whole process. The plant uses 84 million bushels of corn a year and produces 240 million gallons of ethanol, most of which is exported. A byproduct is 900,000 tons of distillers grain which is consumed locally or shipped out by rail. The plant itself is mostly a “green” operation with its only discharge being excess steam. It takes only three days to turn corn kernels into liquid fuel there.

With our educational stops done, we had a leisurely drive back to catch our flight out of Fargo. With a little time to spare we allowed a little shopping excursion since the other requirement of eating well had already been met. While waiting for our connecting flight we discussed where our trip next year would take us. The only consensus was that it would not be north unless it was summertime!

he Kentucky Agricultural Development Board (KADB), chaired by Governor Steve Beshear, today approved $5,586,102 in 14 agricultural diversification projects across the Commonwealth during its December board meeting at the Capitol.

State and regional investments included: $1,863,900Â Â Â Â Â Statewide Dairy Marketing The Kentucky Dairy Development Council Inc. was approved for $1,863,900 in state funds to be disbursed over two years to continue educating and promoting Kentuckyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dairy producers and the dairy industry as a whole, including the Market Incentive Leadership for Kentucky (MILK) program.

$1,580,947Â Â Â Â Â Statewide Livestock Marketing Program The Kentucky Beef Network was approved for $1,580,947 in state funds to be disbursed over two years to continue training beef cattlemen to produce and market a quality product at a reasonable and sustainable profit through new programs such as Professional Cattlemen and Young Cattlemen/Farm Link, along with continuing programs like Marketing Communications, Master Cattleman and more. $1,325,000Â Â Â Â Â Horticultural Crop Production & Marketing The Kentucky Horticulture Council was approved for a total of $1,325,000 in state funds to be disbursed over two years to continue work in the expansion and profitability of horticulture crop producers through on-farm demonstrations,

consultations, development of marketing systems, market research and more. $33,850          Chia Feasibility Study Kentucky Specialty Grains LLC was approved for $33,850 in state funds to conduct a study on the market development and feasibility of processing chia for seed, oil, meal and flour.

The County Agricultural Investment Program (CAIP) is designed to provide farmers with incentives to allow them to improve and diversify their current production practices. CAIP covers a wide variety of agricultural enterprises in its 11 investment areas. Three CAIPs were approved by the board totaling $430,842 for Johnson, Madison and Ohio counties.

In addition to these new approvals, an additional $308,237 was approved to supplement existing CAIPs in the following

counties:Â Fayette, Franklin and Lewis.

The Deceased Farm Animal Removal Program serves as a measure to facilitate the coordination of environmentally sound and cost-effective disposal of deceased livestock for Kentucky producers. Two County Deceased Farm Animal Removal Programs were approved for Clark and Hart counties totaling $15,000.

The Shared-use Equipment Program is designed to benefit a high number of producers who cannot justify ownership expenses associated with certain equipment by helping them access technology necessary to improve their operations in an economical manner. Two Shared-use Equipment Programs were approved by the board in the amount of $28,326 for Clay and Franklin counties.

How Do You Feel About GMO’s?

W

ith the impact of the drought, corn and soybeans weren’t the only crops that suffered. I’m sure you’ve noticed the high priced apple crop, the nonexistent peach crop and of course there were no cherries to speak of this year, but apparently that’s not what matters—it’s all about Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) labeling.

I read on a social media site about a recent boycott of those food producing companies who did not support GMO labeling. While I expected it to be a list of companies that produce calorie laden, delectable treats like Little Debbies Snacks and Post cereals, I was quite surprised to see the list included companies that produced organic products like Kashi cereals and Silk, the milk alternative and Tropicana Organic orange juice and Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. Of course all these products are owned by food giants like Coca-Cola, Dean Foods, General Mills, Kellogg, Con Agra and Unilever—the very same companies that produce foods that contain GMOs. Are you totally confused now? I am.

This group of individuals was discussing their hatred for these companies and what GMO’s have done to negatively affect our population.

The discussion then turned to how to grow organic food without cross pollination with GMO crops. Some were saying “cross pollination is rampant” while others were saying “You can’t grow anything outside, it all has to be

in a greenhouse!”

Then the discussion tipped the unbelievable scale when someone said they don’t buy fruit anymore because the fruit you eat now is partially a living insect and when you eat them your cells get confused which equals cancer. Seriously? Did someone just make that up to be funny? Wow. I shudder to think what these folks eat on a day to day basis. They are narrowing their food pool down so far that pretty soon you’ll see them out munching on tree bark—well… as long as it was protected from cross pollination.

Some of these folks are seriously confused and uneducated but if you think I’m going to turn the corner and say we all need to keep telling our story and educating the consumer, you are dead wrong. Don’t get me wrong, I think farmers still need to reach out to consumers to fill the gap with truth and knowledge but I also believe that the “common consumer” is either looking at ways to eat healthy, regardless of GMO’s or they are filling themselves with foods they enjoy, regardless of nutritional content. I contend they don’t care about GMO’s, bST, LFTB or anything else.

Consumers want convenience, affordable and quick. Look at the continual boom of fast food, the drive thru’s and the hot and ready market—that’s what the people want.

Maybe we need to communicate a different message; efficiency. Maybe we should celebrate the diversity, the efficiency and the advancement of farming technologies. With the nation devoid of fiscal responsibility do you really think “Joe Consumer” is worried about non-GMO wheat flour being used in his pizza crust and nonGMO barley in his favorite beer as he watches the NFL playoffs?

Maybe. Maybe not.

Prepare NOW for More and Better Pastures in 2013 Dr. Garry Lacefield

P

asture/hay fields across Kentucky have been under many stresses over the past few years including multiple droughts, flooding, extreme temperatures, ice storms, overgrazed, etc. As a result, many have thinned, gotten weedy and much less productive than their potential.

Now is the time to plan for more and better pasture/hay in 2013. I hope your crystal ball is “clearer” than mine and you are able to predict the weather for 2013. I simply predict we will have weather but beyond that will remain optimistic this is going to be a good forage year.

Most of us do not have time and other resources to do all that is needed or we desire, so inventory and setting priorities is the place to start.

Inventory: What are the conditions of your fields including desirable grass stands, production potential, weeds, legumes, etc. Are your pastures subdivided so you control the grazing or if too large the cattle control and will make the decisions? Do you have some field capable of growing more/ better in July-August than cool season plants such as tall fescue, orchardgrass, white clover and finally can you make improvements in your hay/baleage quantity-quality and storage-feeding program. You already have the answers to much of the above so now simply set your highest priorities for selected improvements in 2013.

Fertility: The first and most important factor is to know the pH-P-K levels. This is extremely important on any field you plan to 24

renovate with legumes or reseed this spring.

pearl millet, sudex, sudangrass, and bermudagrass can improve summer production.

Producers who have some percentage of their total pasture (1525%) plants in this category can usually have grazing during the “summer slump” period.

Weed Control: For those fields that have sufficient grass but have many broadleaf weeds, you may want to spray to control before renovating with clovers.

Renovation: In Kentucky, pasture renovation simply means re-establish clovers in grass pasture/hay fields.

This represents a great need this year as many of our fields have lost most or all clovers. Many years of research and farmer experience has shown where clovers such as red clover is renovated into tall fescue yield and quality is improved. The legume “fix” needed nitrogen and improves summer production.

New Seedings: I expect an increase in alfalfa seedings this spring. Cash hay prices, availability of Roundup Ready varieties and the need for summer grazing are just three of the reasons I expect more seedings.

Rotational Grazing: Interest in improved pasture utilization through rotational grazing has shown increases across Kentucky and I fully expect that trend to continue. During last years’ drought producers who had set up rotational grazing programs were able to use spring and early summer pasture more efficiently and over a larger period of time before they run short of pasture.

Summer Pasture: We go through a “summer slump” in Kentucky each year as our cool season grasses show less production during July-August.

In drought years this period of time is longer and more severe. Using plants capable of growing more during summer such as red clover, alfalfa, lespedeza, warm season grasses such as, eastern gamagrass, switchgrass, bluestems,

Hay/baleage: Stored feed is expensive compared to pasture. For most Kentucky producers we still need to have some stored feed for those days during winter that we simply cannot graze. The number of days can certainly be reduced with planned grazing-forage programs. Areas to consider for improving would certainly include extending grazing programs, harvesting hay/baleage early for highest quality and reducing losses during haymaking, storing and feeding.

I’m sure each of you can think of other areas to consider as we plan to improve our pasture/hay program for 2013. I wish you the very best for 2013.

Investment Analysis of Auto Shutoff Precision-Agri Technology

BY GREG HALICH & CLINT HARDY here is currently a large volume of late model, high quality farm machinery available for small and mid-sized grain farms. The main reasons for this include the need for greater machinery capacity on large grain farms, record net farm incomes over the past few years that has encouraged the purchase of new equipment, and recent tax rules which have allowed producers to expense the total purchase of new equipment in one year. Most of this used machinery still has many useful years left and purchasers may find it worthwhile to invest in upgrades of modern technology features. This article focuses on investment analysis of two potential technology upgrades: 1) automatic row unit shutoff clutches on planters, and 2) automatic section controllers for sprayer booms.

Both of these technologies effectively shut off portions of these machines when they are not needed. These shutoffs will significantly reduce the amount of area would be overlapped without this technology.

This has two advantages. First, it saves on the product being applied (seed and herbicide). Second, it increases yield on the areas that would be overlapped.

Planter Analysis: We evaluated a 12-23 row planter with a total retrofit cost of $20,000 for the row unit shutoff clutches. It was assumed that the upgraded machine would be kept for 8 years and that 20% of the upgraded value would remain when sold. Table 1 details three scenarios for yield overlap decrease, and increase in corn/soybean yield in the previously overlapped areas for the retrofitted planter.

Sprayer Analysis: We evaluated a self-propelled sprayer with 60 foot boom and a total retrofit cost of $6,000 for the automatic section controllers and basic GPS receiver. It was also assumed that it would be kept for 8 years and that 20% of the upgraded value would remain when sold.

Table 2 details three scenarios for yield overlap decrease, and increase in corn/ soybean yield in the previously overlapped areas for the retrofitted sprayer.

Table 3 details other assumptions relevant to the analysis. Increased yield is valued by multiplying the area of previous overlap by the expected yield increase, and then multiplying this by the modified price per bushel for corn and soybeans.

The modified price takes the expected base price per bushel and subtracts additional costs incurred due to the additional yield (additional P and K removal, harvesting costs, trucking costs, drying costs). These

increased costs amounted to $.69/bu for corn, and $1.10/bu for soybeans.

Planter Results: The analysis was first conducted for a 1,000 acre farm in a 50-50 rotation of corn and soybeans. Seed

Tax Update and Implications for 2012

BY RUSH MIDKIFF here are two big tax code changes for business owners this year. First, in 2011 I.R.C. Section 179 (accelerated depreciation) was a maximum of either $500,000 or taxable income from all trades or businesses (including wages). The investment limit for beginning the phase-out of the deduction was $2,000,000. As of the writing of this article, the 2012 I.R.C.

savings ranged from $2,000 to $3,400 per year in the three scenarios. Increased net profit from the additional yield ranged from $2,200 to $7,200 per year. Total combined increased profit due to seed savings and yield increase ranged from $4,200 to $10,600 per year. This resulted in a payback period of 5 years using the most conservative assumptions (low scenario) and 2 years using the most optimistic assumptions (high scenario). The returns on investment were 15%, 32%, and 52% for the three scenarios. Thus this upgrade appears to be a very good investment even when using the most conservative assumptions for this sized farm.

Section 179 deduction is a maximum of either $139,000 or the taxable income from all trades or businesses (including wages). The investment limit for beginning the phase-out of the deduction in 2012 is $560,000.

The second big change is in bonus depreciation. In 2011, taxpayers could take a 100 percent deduction on all qualified brand new equipment and building purchases with a Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System (MACRS) life of 20 years or less. In 2012, the deduction

from $2,000 to $4,000 per year in the three scenarios.

Increased net profit from the additional yield ranged from $2,900 to $11,600 per year. Total combined increased profit due to seed savings and yield increase ranged from $4,900 to $15,600 per year. This resulted in a payback period of 1.2 years using the most conservative assumptions (scenario 1) and .4 years using the most optimistic assumptions (scenario 2). The returns on investment were 81%, 159%, and 260% for the three scenarios. These types of paybacks and expected returns are rarely seen in investment analysis; even the most conservative assumptions yielded incredible returns.

Sprayer Results: The same 1,000 acre farm was used as the base-size with the sprayer analysis. Herbicide savings ranged

There have been very few other changes to the tax code for the 2012 tax year. Maximum capital gains are still 15%. The income rates have remained unchanged although the brackets have been adjusted for inflation. However, in 2013 the Bush tax cuts will be expiring and the implications of the Health Care Act will go into effect. It is expectation that there will be many changes to our tax

size decreases, the benefits of the potential upgrades will decrease.

Thus it is important to evaluate a range of farm sizes and see how they impact the investments. Table 6 shows the planter analysis when the farm size ranges from 1,250 down to 250 acres. Again, it is assumed these farms employ a 50-50 rotation of corn and soybeans.

At 500 acres, it appears the investment would still be good with the middle and most optimistic assumptions.

With the most pessimistic assumptions, the farm size would need to be 750 acres for the investment to be

To compound the problem, a lot of farmers are likely to receive significant crop insurance payments for their 2012 crop losses. The result is likely to be a large amount of taxable income in many cases. Specialists are starting their fall visits this month and it is advised that all KFBM cooperators take a hard look at their tax position to avoid any surprises come tax time. favorable.

Table 7 shows the sprayer analysis when the farm sizes range from 1,000 down to 125 acres. At 125 acres, it appears the investment would still be good with the middle and most optimistic assumptions. With the most pessimistic assumptions, the farm size would need to be 250 acres for the investment to be favorable. Thus the potential for sprayer retrofits seems greater than planter retrofits on the smallest grain farms.

In summary, it appears that small and mid-sized grain farms have a great opportunity to retrofit high-quality used planters and sprayers with these two precision agricultural technologies at a fraction of the cost of new equipment.

It’s More Than a Will, It’s a Way

BY STEVE ISAACS n the past two years College of Ag faculty have been involved in four Farm Business Transition workshops that have been attended by more than six hundred participants ranging in age from their twenties through their eighties. With estimates that up to seventy percent of farm land will change hands by 2025, the average age of Kentucky farm operators being fifty-seven, and uncertainty around federal inheritance tax policy, the need and demand for farm transition planning is strong.

While the threat of inheritance taxes or the uncertainty of potential changes in tax law are often the driving force for developing a transition plan, it is family disputes, rather than tax obligations, that are more likely to threaten the future of the farm business. A recent informal

poll of farm management professionals with several hundred years of collective experience failed to discover a single farm business whose failure could be attributed to tax obligations. In contrast, each of the professionals knew of several cases of farms broken up because of unresolved family conflicts.

Disputes over the distribution of assets among siblings can be averted by the development and execution of a will, but the business is more than just a collection of assets. Successful transition and continuation of the business should also include provisions to transfer management, labor, and marketing responsibilities in a fair and orderly fashion. The transition should also accommodate the financial needs of all the families who depend on the sustained profitability of the farm… both the entering and the exiting

generations. The will is an important part of the transition, but is just a part of the total plan.

Few families can develop the plan without the assistance of professionals. Attorneys, accountants, lenders, financial planners, and farm management advisors are all resources that can, and should, be consulted in development of a transition plan. And clearly, all family members should be engaged in the transition process. We used to suggest that these conversations should take place around the kitchen table. That was probably never a very good idea and here’s why. It is NOT NEUTRAL territory. Much of the family history and a lot of the family emotion are gathered around that table.

office – somewhere off the farm, away from distractions, including cell phones. We’d also suggest in some cases that the business should hire a facilitator to help assemble the team, set an agenda, direct the meeting, take notes, and help produce the plan. The facilitator may be the one to raise the difficult questions and seek compromise solutions. One farm financial management advisor has observed that “if you haven’t fired your facilitator about three times, they’re not doing their job.”

According to the 2007 Ag Census there are over $44 billion dollars of agricultural assets in Kentucky. If seventy percent of those assets change hands by 2025, that’s a five million dollar a day opportunity…or problem if the transition is not planned in advance of the deaths of the owners.

PERC Announces the Propane Farm Incentive Program WASHINGTON (DEC. 17, 2012) he Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) announces the release of the Propane Farm Incentive Program, a nationwide research and demonstration initiative in which farmers can receive more than $4,000 toward the purchase of new propane-fueled irrigation engines.

Farmers who participate in the program will receive a $400 incentive per liter of engine displacement, up to 10.3 liters or $4,120, toward the purchase of a new propane-fueled irrigation engine.

Qualifying equipment must be new, original propane-fueled engines and equipment that have obtained the proper U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and/or California Air Resources Board Certification.

The program aims to support propane-fueled agricultural equipment as it emerges out of the research and

development pipeline. Feedback and performance data from the programâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s participants will be used to inform future product development. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This program gets at the core of the significant investments PERC has made in the agricultural industry,â&#x20AC;? said Mark Leitman, director of business development and marketing at PERC. â&#x20AC;&#x153;By offering incentives to farmers in exchange for performance data, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re establishing a mutually-beneficial relationship that will assist in developing new technology to support the industry.â&#x20AC;?

Research has shown that propane-fueled stationary irrigation engines can help producers improve their bottom line in several ways. Propane-fueled irrigation

engines cost up to 14 percent less to purchase and operate than diesel irrigation engines, and propane reduces deposits on engine components and decreases overall maintenance costs. Additionally, new generation propane-fueled engines produce fewer emissions than gasoline- and diesel-powered systems.

By working with OEMs, PERC has helped commercialize new equipment and propane-fueled irrigation engines that are fuel-efficient and cleaner burning than traditional models. â&#x20AC;&#x153;While itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s clear that propane offers a multitude of benefits for farmers, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re really seeking to improve and build upon our existing technology,â&#x20AC;? Leitman said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;With the feedback and performance data collected through the Propane Farm

Incentive Program, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re able to better develop equipment to meet the needs of those who use it the most: farmers.â&#x20AC;?

Currently, nearly 40 percent of farms in the U.S. use propane to run pumps and engines, heat buildings, and dry and process crops. As gasoline and diesel prices continue to rise in recent years, propane has remained an efficient and affordable fuel alternative on the farm.

Nearly 90 percent of U.S. propane supplies are produced in the United States, giving farmers the security of using an abundant, domestic energy source.

New Research in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Neonatal Calf Diarrhea

D

iarrhea in neonatal calves is one of the leading causes of morbidity (sickness) and mortality (death) in North America and Europe and continues to be a major cause of economic loss to the beef cattle industry. There are five major infectious causes of diarrhea in calves less than 21 days of age: E. coli K99, Rotavirus, Coronavirus, Cryptosporidia, and Salmonella.

Noninfectious factors such as insufficient or poor quality colostrum, poor sanitation, stress, and cold weather can cause or contribute to neonatal calf diarrhea as well. Regardless of the

cause, diarrhea results in increased loss of electrolytes and water in the feces of calves and decreases milk intake.

Ultimately, this process causes dehydration, metabolic acidosis (the blood is more acidic than it should be), electrolyte abnormalities including a deficiency of sodium, and a negative energy balance from the lost nutrients and lack of milk. Oral electrolyte solutions have typically been used to replace fluid losses, correct acid-base and electrolyte levels in the blood, and provide nutritional support with the added benefit of being relatively inexpensive and easy to administer.

Recent research has elicited better methods to assess and treat a calf with diarrhea as well as better guidelines for choosing an oral electrolyte solu-

tion. Faster and more accurate diagnostic tests have also been developed to uncover the underlying cause of the diarrhea. Rapid diagnosis is critical to develop the best treatment options and to prevent future outbreaks.

Accurate assessment of a calf with diarrhea is necessary to determine if oral fluid therapy is adequate or if intravenous (IV ) fluids are indicated.

The choice depends on the determination of two important factors: 1) the severity of the dehydration and 2) the severity of the metabolic acidosis or low pH of the blood. Dehydration is relatively easy to monitor by examination of the position of the eyeball and by skin elasticity or the â&#x20AC;&#x153;skin tentâ&#x20AC;? test. The degree of recession of the eyeball in the orbit (how far the eye

is â&#x20AC;&#x153;sunken inâ&#x20AC;?) can be estimated by gently pulling the lower eyelid down and measuring the distance between the eye and the socket. If the distance is greater than 0.2 inches, dehydration is considered to be more than 8% and IV fluids are needed. Likewise, if the skin is pinched on the side of the neck and rotated 90 degrees then released and the time for the skinfold to disappear is greater than 6 seconds, the calf is considered greater than 8% dehydrated and in need of intravenous fluids. Although these measurements are somewhat subjective and may occasionally be inaccurate, they are by far the most accurate clinical indicators of dehydration that can be easily measured in the field. FEATURE tus are not as good because they are based on a “depression” or “demeanor” score to predict the level of acidosis.

Calves often have other concurrent metabolic problems that cause depression so these scores may be incorrect in complicated cases. Two parameters are important to assess: 1) the ability to stand (strong, weak or wobbly, down or recumbent) and 2) the ability to suck (strong, weak or slow, or no suckle reflex). In general, a standing calf with a strong to moderate suckle reflex or that demonstrates a “chewing action” should be given oral fluids.

Any calf with a very weak or absent suckle reflex should be given IV fluid therapy because, if oral fluids are given to a calf with ileus (no gut motility), the fluid is not absorbed but instead pools in the rumen resulting in bloat and/or rumen acidosis. ANY calf that is severely depressed and unable to stand requires intravenous fluids.

The question often arises whether to allow a calf treated with oral elec-

trolytes to continue nursing. Some experts used to recommend a “rest the gut” approach, suggesting that continued milk feeding worsens diarrhea. However, research has shown that milk feeding does not prolong or worsen diarrhea, nor does it delay healing of the intestines. Calves should be maintained on their full milk diet (continue nursing) plus oral electrolytes when possible as long as they exhibit diarrhea. Damaged intestines need metabolic fuel to optimize repair and milk provides a readily available source of nutrition to facilitate that repair. In addition, milk is more energy dense than electrolytes so continued milk feeding minimizes weight loss associated with prolonged bouts of diarrhea. If calves are depressed and refuse to nurse, a hypertonic oral electrolyte product such as Calf-Lyte II HE or Enterolyte HE can be used but, if nursing is not resumed within 12 hours, blood glucose concentrations

will drop too low and the calves will get too weak to respond to oral treatment alone.

Calves with diarrhea, regardless of the cause, will usually have an overgrowth of the E. coli bacteria in the small intestine that can be absorbed into the bloodstream and cause systemic signs of illness including fever, loss of appetite, and lethargy.

Injectable antibiotics and injectable nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDs) such as Banamine® are recommended in calves showing these signs. Work with your veterinarian to choose the products that will work best in your herd. Currently there is no research evidence to support the use of corticosteroids, motility modifiers, immunostimulants, intestinal “protectants” or “absorbants”, or probiotics for treatment of calf diarrhea.

Improved diagnostics are now available to ascertain the cause of neonatal calf diarrhea. The UKVDL has recently developed a Calf Diarrhea

Multiplex PCR panel (cost of $50 plus a $10 accession fee) which tests for the major diarrhea pathogens in calves less than 21 days old including: E.coli K99, Rotavirus, Coronavirus, Salmonella spp., and Cryptosporidia from one fecal sample submitted early in the course of disease and before any treatment is instituted. It is highly accurate as it detects the DNA or “molecular fingerprint” of the various pathogens and results are available within 1-2 days. A culture of the bacteria is also recommended (an additional $15) in order to identify which antibiotics will work best against bacterial agents. At least 5 grams of feces must be submitted in a labeled, leakproof container maintained at a cold temperature during transport. Successful People Never Quit Learning

It wasn’t cattle, but pigs and knives that occupied Gordon Jones in his youthful days in and around Scottsville, Ky. Influenced by a high school teacher, he was into raising Hampshire pigs, performing so well he became the FFA Star Farmer for the state of Tennessee.

Seeing how education combined with ability could lead to great results would be a valuable lesson for his future.

He was only 10 when another kind of education came into his life.

While visiting relatives in Indianapolis, he was given a large quantity of knives.

It was the perfect gift to allow him to become a leading “businessman” at the knife and watch swaps held the second Monday of every month in downtown Scottsville.

r. Gordon F. Jones spent 42 years telling students that a career in agriculture has no boundaries.

Today, he spends much of his time checking fences.

The man born into farming in a humble home at the TennesseeKentucky border was a fixture on the campus of Western Kentucky University.

He was serving as professor of Animal Science when he retired on June 30, 2012, as one of the most honored teachers in the school’s agriculture department.

A resident of Bowling Green with his wife, Susan, who is retired from nursing at Vanderbilt University, Jones spends considerable time back on the family farm.

Working alongside son, Bart, the enterprising pair have seen their operations grow from 85 to hundreds of acres owned and leased at 14 different properties. The acreage is equally divided between Allen County, Kentucky, and Macon County, Tennessee.

Red Hill Farms is up to 350 cows after starting with just 50.

“Bart got into the purebred Red Angus business about 10 years ago, and we also have Simmentals. Plus he is growing 160 acres of burley,” says Dr. Jones, pointing out that more tobacco is grown in Macon County than anywhere else in the world.

An animal science and ag business major in college, Bart “never wanted to do anything but come back to the farm,” says his dad. He and Susan also have a daughter, Beth, 36, who is a medical doctor on the faculty at the University of Michigan.

“I’m thankful Bart came home to take over the farm. It gives me the chance to put into practice some of 32

Still filled with a high level of energy at age 68, Dr. Jones blends in well with the home folks who knew him as a “pig man” early in his career.

knives when it came to farming skills.

Recruited by different colleges, he woke up one morning to find four professors from the University of Tennessee at his house. They made a pitch for their school while sitting around the breakfast table.

“I was in a real quandary as to where to go, but UT put the pressure on me,” he says.

And Knoxville is where he wound up, spending the next four years residing in the hog barn.

“Working on the pig farm is how I got through college.”

He gave me the interest to do what I do.”

Knowledge gained at UT helped the Jones family establish an operation that saw them selling hogs into 28 states and five foreign countries.

Not only were sales made, but lifelong friendships developed.

Dr. Jones recalls a customer from Japan who had such respect for his ( Jones’s) father, he returned to visit the grave after his dad died in 2001.

Teachers are the catalyst for learning, and great teachers instill excitement and interest and stimulate effort, making the learning process fun and enjoyable.

“Dr. Gordon Jones was the best teacher I ever had, and, like many of you, I owe him a lot of my success.

“Dr. Jones taught in a way that didn’t just allow you to memorize it for some test, but to actually retain it for use later in life.

“As an advisor for the students headed to vet school, he was tireless in arranging a program that pushed and prepared them for success in graduate school. I have had the Auburn vet school people tell me they knew when a kid came from WKU because they were well prepared both academically and practically.”

After earning his PhD in Animal Science from UT in 1971, he was offered jobs there, at the University of Kentucky, and University of Iowa.

He was considering his options when faced with the need to transport an uncle to Bowling Green for medical treatment.

While in town, he took his first-ever walk onto the WKU campus and met Dr. Elmer Gray, who told him about an opening.

“I saw coming to Western as a chance to teach with less research required, and I knew teaching and advising were my first loves,” he says.

He may not have known it at the time, but coming to WKU would mean the young teacher would not only be able to pursue his dreams, but to instill his enthusiasm for agriculture in hundreds of appreciative students.

“Successful people never quit learning…they’re always seeking the latest information,” says Jones.

With that in mind, Jones recently placed a call to Maples, saying he wanted his assistance in starting a lectureship series.

The first one is set for January with retired Cornell professor Dr. John Pollack, a leader in developing the science of genetic evaluation in beef cattle, as presenter.

Putting what he has preached into practice, using science to help buyers make money on stock purchased, is very gratifying to the Jones family.

Grandson Ty is five, and represents the seventh generation of Joneses at Red Hill Farm.

Hopefully, if he elects to go into farming he’ll find it a labor of love, but not have to live in the pig barn when he goes off to college.

EPA Retains Dust Standard NCBA, WASHINGTON

T

he Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today announced that it would retain the coarse particulate matter (PM) National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS), eliciting a positive response from the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) on behalf of cattle producers across the country.

NCBA is pleased that EPA has decided to retain the current coarse PM standard and did not make a bad situation worse,” said NCBA Deputy Environmental Counsel Ashley McDonald. “Unfortunately, cattle producers did not get the permanent certainty they were seeking in the form of legislation and will again face a review of this standard within five years. But for today, NCBA is relieved that EPA listened to rural America and realized that further tightening the dust standard would have disastrous effects on America’s agricultural economy.”

The PM standard, commonly known as the dust standard, remains one of the most important environmental issues facing cattle producers. Under the Clean Air Act (CAA), EPA is required to review the dust standard every five years to evaluate its protection of public health. Despite the lack of any scientific evidence finding any harm to human health from rural dust at

ambient levels, agricultural operations in arid parts of the country have a difficult time attaining compliance with the dust standard at its current level, and must implement costly practices in order to mitigate dust.

Under the current review of the dust standard, EPA proposed in June of this year to retain the coarse PM standard, and NCBA, state cattlemen’s associations and members submitted comments encouraging EPA to make that proposal final.

McDonald made it clear that if the PM standard had been tightened, it would have been virtually impossible for current agricultural operations to demonstrate compliance, subjecting them to fines under the CAA of up to $37,500 per day.

“A stricter PM standard would have an impact that would cause most of cattle country, including the entire Midwest, West and Southwest, to be out of compliance or at the brink,” McDonald said. “For now, 15 mile– per-hour speed limits on dirt roads, paving dirt and gravel roads and a prohibition on harvesting or tilling during the day are not regulatory requirements in most states, but could easily become a reality if EPA continues to regulate farm dust.”

McDonald added that until legislation is passed by Congress giving cattle producers permanent relief from dust regulations, NCBA will continue to fight EPA’s dust standard.

Just Because You Have a Genetic Test Doesn’t Mean You Can Throw Away Your Tape Measure SUBMITTED BY THE CUP LAB™

“I

t’s not like we can take one DNA test and have it tell us everything and remain accurate forever,” says Dr. Alison Van Eenennaam, PhD. “We’re going to always need phenotypes to keep training [genomic] prediction equations. They’re not mutually exclusive things.”

Van Eenennaam is a Cooperative Extension Specialist in Animal Genomics and Biotechnology at University of California, Davis, specializing in the use of DNA-based biotechnologies in beef cattle production. She explains what it means to “retrain” genomic equations.

“DNA markers are developed using a large population of animals that have genotypes and phenotypes of whatever trait we’re interested in - a population of animals that has ultrasound and possibly carcass records – their own or their progeny’s. To predict marbling, for example, that large population of phenotypes is combined with the genotype information to tell you whether or not a particular genetic marker has a positive or negative association with marbling.”

Van Eenennaam continues. “Let’s say at one particular marker TT is

good for marbling and CC is bad for marbling. And if you do that throughout thousands of locations on the genome, you can start to get what’s called a prediction, based on an animal’s genotype, as to what its likely marbling phenotype is going to be. But, it’s based on that training, or discovery, population.

“And what the data seems to be showing is that yes, you can train and then you can predict an animal just based on its genotype with no phenotypic information, but every generation the accuracy of how well that prediction works tends to go down. And so, it seems continual retraining of the prediction equation every generation is required. So, there’s going to be a need to continue phenotyping.

According to Van Eenennaam, the data shows the accuracy of that genomic prediction equation decreases as much as 50 percent every generation.

“It’ll depend a little bit on the density of the markers, and whether you have a causative or associative marker,” she explains. “If you have a DNA marker that is actually causing the marbling, the accuracy wouldn’t change very much from generation to generation. But what has been found is that we’ve not actually got

the causative marker, but rather a marker that’s “linked to” the causative marker. It’s like a little flagpole saying, ‘it’s over here somewhere.’ As a result of recombination, there’s a possibility that it might not be associated with that particular causative marker in the next generation. And so, you tend to get a drop off in the accuracy of those equations over time, as the generations move away from the training population.”

There are thousands of genes associated with a complex trait like marbling, not one single marker that can be considered causative, as is the case with most carcass traits.

“To be honest, we haven’t found that many actual causative genes for complex traits,” says Van Eenennaam. “Despite all the work we’ve done there’s only really a handful where you can show that an animal that didn’t get a mutation, or genetic variant, had one particular phenotype and one that does have the variant has that phenotype.

Myostatin, or double muscling is an example. Van Eenennaam explains if a mutation is caused in that particular gene and that protein is not formed, the result will be a double-muscled phenotype. But it’s more complex with traits like marbling that are not controlled by a

single gene.

Different Breeds, Different Animals Currently the Angus breed leads the way in utilizing genetic markers. “DNA can be an indicator for economically important carcass traits,” says Bill Bowman, President of Angus Genetics, Inc. and Chief Operating Officer of the American Angus Association. “The AAA has made it a priority to utilize genetic selection tools to serve the breed and the industry.”

Hereford breeders are developing genomic tools for their breed, and others are following suit. But, as Van Eenennaam further explains, what works on one breed does not carry over to another.

“The data shows quite clearly that if you train on one breed using the 50,000 or 50K SNP chip, those predictions don’t work in another breed. The hope was that if we went up to a denser genotyping platform - an 800,000 SNP chip - the marker would be situated immediately adjacent to the causative allele, such that the relationship would be so tight that it would be in common between say Angus and Hereford.

At the current time there are insufficient data to determine whether this is actually the case. “It may

Hopefully that will be useful across breeds. And it typically will be, although not every breed is going to be whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s called polymorphic for that particular mutation. For example, if I get something thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s causing an increase in marbling in Angus it may be that particular mutation doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t exist in Herefords or maybe itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s already fixed to unity in Herefords so thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no genetic variation there to play with. So, letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just say, in one particular location, a â&#x20AC;&#x153;Tâ&#x20AC;? is a good thing, it may be thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no Herefords with a â&#x20AC;&#x153;Tâ&#x20AC;? at that location, or maybe all the Herefords have a â&#x20AC;&#x153;Tâ&#x20AC;? at that location and so thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not genetic variation to select

for. â&#x20AC;&#x153;At the moment the best approach seems to be to use multiple breeds in the training population. There are some data to suggest that can actually help obtain accurate predictions for all the included breeds.

Predicting Profit Van Eenennaam says genomic tests offer the most promise for traits that display low heritability.

Those with a high heritability, such as birth or weaning weight, are visually obvious and can be measured before the animal produces offspring, thus reducing the need for genomic prediction. But traits that donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t appear until later in life, such as carcass traits, are very well-suited to genomic selection because it gives an indicator of how that animalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to perform before selection decisions are made.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Now, having said that, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s exactly what ultrasound does,â&#x20AC;? says Van Eenennaam. â&#x20AC;&#x153;DNA tests give you a genetic merit estimate, and ultrasound gives you a phenotypic prediction as to the likely carcass quality attributes of a live animal.

And we need new phenotypes every generation to keep the genomic tests accurate.â&#x20AC;?

Bowman agrees the need for ultrasound generated phenotype data is ongoing. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We still need to look at the phenotypic evaluation,â&#x20AC;? he says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ultrasound is a valuable information source that enhances the accuracy of the breedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s EPDs. It continues to play an integral role in generating reliable predictions.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;And that way,â&#x20AC;? adds Van Eenennaam, â&#x20AC;&#x153;producers can make decisions based on the genetic merit of the animals in their herd with some level of accuracy.â&#x20AC;?

Sources of E. coli Are Not Always What They Seem

U

.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) scientists have identified sources of Escherichia coli bacteria that could help restore the reputation of local livestock. Studies by Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientist Mark Ibekwe suggest that in some parts of California, pathogens in local waterways are more often carried there via runoff from urban areas, not from animal production facilities.

ARS is USDA’s chief intramural scientific research agency, and this work supports the USDA priority of ensuring food safety.

Even though most strains of E. coli are non-pathogenic, the bacterium is monitored by public health officials as an indicator of water quality. Cows are often seen as the culprits when E. coli is found in local lakes, rivers and other bodies of water.

Ibekwe, who works at the ARS U.S. Salinity Laboratory in Riverside, Calif., and his colleagues collected 450 water and sediment samples from 20 sites throughout California’s middle Santa Ana River Watershed. The collection sites included urban areas, livestock feeding areas, parks, National Forest lands, and three wastewater treatment plants.

Then the scientists extracted E. coli bacteria from each sample and identified 600 different isolates of E. coli in their samples, many of which could be placed into six clonal populations. They found the greatest variety of different types of E. coli in runoff discharged from areas dominated by urban development or human activities.

Ibekwe also tested all the E. coli isolates for resistance to various antibiotics. He found that from 88 to 95 percent of the isolates were resistant to rifampicin, and that around 75

Tetracycline resistance was by far the most common type of resistance observed in E. coli isolates collected near wastewater treatment plants.

The scientists also found that 24 percent of E. coli collected in sediment samples associated with urban runoff—a total of 144 isolates—showed resistance to as many as seven antibiotics. Results from this work were published in PLOS ONE.

Dr. Lowell Catlett to Provide Keynote Address at NCBA’s Cattlemen’s College® DENVER (Dec. 17, 2012)

Making a Difference

W

e started the interview on a Saturday afternoon at the local Mexican Restaurant.

The only thing better than the BEEF fajita quesadilla, was that across the table from me sat our 2012 Kentucky Cattlemen’s Association President, Mike Bach and his wife, Mary. As we got lost in conversation, I learned that before Bach served as our Association President, he served our country as an officer in the U.S. Army. It was here that he gained the leadership qualities that helped him attain his position and fulfill his duties as President. “You can’t always be one of the crowd if you’re a leader. You have to be willing to set the example.”

Bach, along with wife, Mary and son, Steven run a 240 cow calf operation on a beautiful farm in Bath County. He says, “I wanted to become President so I could try to make a difference for my family and other cattle producers in the state.”

During his Presidency, he helped the Association work on things like getting the Eastern Livestock dilemma to Federal Court so that all producers affected could be in the same playing field.

Another one of Bach’s projects involved efforts to get ahead of a water crisis. “Between population expansion, EPA regulations and the Corp of Engineers, in the next 10 years, water will be the new oil.” Bach and his team have been working on getting ahead of the issue by coming up with plans for farmers to have the water they need to do their job. “Kentucky has about 47 inches of rainfall per year. We need to find ways to harness our water supply.

Building ponds, dams and lakes are all topics of conversation.”

Bach has also helped work on legislation to get the Beef Check-Off increased. “The cost of everything is going up and we need to raise the Check-Off to keep up with that. We’re also facing more issues today than ever 40

and we need the funds for promotion, research and education. People who are educated about where their Check-Off dollars are going agree that it would be money well spent especially in today’s industry.”

On that note, Bach added, “I think it’s very important that we are proactive with the animal rights movement.

We’re all for humane treatment.”

Bach says we need to get down to business with groups like HSUS by being involved with the Animal Care

Standards Board. If we can go ahead and establish reasonable rules that can suit everyone, we can have more of a voice in the matter. “And it’s not just about raising cattle anymore. We have to tell our story. We’re living in a world where many consumers think that food just comes from the grocery store and when the shelves run out, we get more from the back.” In such a small industry, Bach wants to encourage everyone to play their part to educate consumers about where their food comes from.

That’s something he’d like to see in the future of KCA- more people getting involved at the grass roots level.

Bach says he’s had the pleasure of visiting many county Cattlemen’s meetings and says that’s where we’re really going to make a difference. We can furnish information at the state level, and work on legislation, but it’s going to be the grillers, the people doing the meat case activities at grocery stores, the guys who let groups come visit their farms and the members who go out of their way to have conversations and make connections to promote beef cattle production, products and farmers in their own home towns that will really make a difference.

As we left the restaurant and headed to their beautiful colonial home, Bach explained, “We’ve always had a goal to reach 10,000 members. I think this is a great goal, but what I’d really like to see is 5,000 members who really get involved. Even if you just devote one day a year, it would make a huge difference in giving a voice to the industry.”

When we got to his house, he reached for his coveralls and said, “You don’t have to be anywhere anytime soon, do you?”

I smiled and replied, “No, sir” thanking God I always had farm clothes in the back of my truck. The highlight of my week was hands down hauling out hay with the KCA President! As we drove around the farm feeding and checking on “the girls” we continued talking.

“What’s the number one thing you want readers to know?” I asked before getting out to open a gate. When I got back in the tractor, he replied, “I want people to know that we’re watching their back. KCA does things that individual cattle farmers can’t do for themselves. Most people can’t just run to Frankfort once a week to handle things on a legal level. I’m not a big fish in the pond, but if I see problems at the grass roots level, I want to be apart of working through the system

to get things done where everyone benefits on the social and economical level. I just want to make a positive difference not only for myself but for others.”

When we got back to the house, Mary was holding their new (and first)

Stopping Flies Before They Mature

A

n insect growth regulator is one of the latest technologies U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) scientists are adding to their arsenal to help fight house flies that spread bacteria to food.

Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists at the agency’s Center for Medical, Agricultural, and Veterinary Entomology in Gainesville,

immature flies died in the pupal stage.

Geden also studied the dosages required, the potency needed, different formulations, and the amount a fly can transport to the larval habitat. Small dosages of pyriproxyfen were extremely effective against house flies, which were able to carry enough back to their breeding sites to prevent immature flies from becoming adults. New, more potent formulations are being tested to improve the delivery system.

When pyriproxyfen is applied to larval breeding sites such as manure, it mimics a hormone in the larvae, preventing the larvae from maturing.

According to ARS entomologist Chris Geden at the Gainesville center, the greatest potential use for pyriproxyfen may be via autodissemination, a process in which adult flies treated with the growth regulator carry it to egg-laying sites. In his experiments, flies were treated with a dust containing pyriproxyfen and then allowed to lay their eggs on a larval medium. All

being used to help control house flies.

Working with University of Florida scientists, ARS entomologist Jerry Hogsette at Gainesville has found that multiple traps may be needed at capture sites to effectively decrease fly populations. One reason is that house flies can use almost any moist surface as an egg-laying site. Flies also grow quickly, and can develop from an egg to an adult in less than seven days.

ARS is USDA’s principal intramural scientific research agency.

UK College of Agriculture Inducts Inaugural Hall of Distinguished Alumni

ive distinguished graduates of the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture are being inducted Dec. 14 into the inaugural class of the Hall of Distinguished Alumni. Fifteen posthumous recipients will also be named.

This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inductees are Louis J. Boyd, Maurice Cook, David Switzer, Harold Workman and Joe Wright. These honorees have had outstanding careers and continue to serve as important members of their fields and in their communities.

For nearly 150 years, extraordinary alumni from College of Agriculture have contributed substantially to their chosen fields, their communities and society. To pay homage to these and future distinguished graduates, the college initiated the Hall of Distinguished Alumni. This award is the

highest honor the college will bestow. He was instrumental in building the UGA alumni association and college development activities. Throughout his career, he was a mentor to students, student clubs and teams.

Cook, a world-renowned expert in soil and water conservation and a leader in the field of soil science, taught at North Carolina State University for more than 30 years before his retirement in 1992 at the rank of professor. He also served as the director of the North Carolina Division of Soil and Water where he initiated the firstin-the-nation soil and water conservation cost-share program for farmers. Cook also served as senior advisor for agricultural affairs for the state, representing the governor throughout the state and the world on

issues of better soil and water conservation management.

Switzer of Lexington is recognized worldwide for his extensive knowledge, experience and accomplishments relating to the horse breeding and racing industries. In addition, he is an acknowledged expert in the field of equine foundation bloodstock and insurance, having owned and operated a bloodstock agency for many years. He promotes the Kentucky Thoroughbred industries locally, nationally and internationally. He played a vital communications role during the Mare Reproductive Loss Syndrome crisis in 2001-2002 andled efforts to create an emergency response team from state government and the industry should another such event occur.

Shopping Smart

I

am writing this on â&#x20AC;&#x153;Black Friday,â&#x20AC;? opting to spend the day in my office rather than out among the Serious Bargain Shoppers. Perhaps Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m missing out â&#x20AC;&#x201C; I read one story about a man who claims to have gotten $10,000 worth of gifts for just $2,000 last year. But I guess my upbringing came through: I was struck more by the fact someone was actually spending that much on one shopping spree, rather than how good the pricing was. As my kids have heard me say more than once, you arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t actually saving any money unless you were going to buy it anyway!

Now, I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to come across as a Grinch â&#x20AC;&#x201C; I love getting presents for family and friends as much as

anyone. And if that perfect something can be purchased at a lower price somewhere, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;sprobably where Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be getting it. But whether shopping for gifts, for gadgets, or even for the cattle operation, we have expectations for our purchases. When we spend our money we are looking for a need to be met (or a desire fulfilled), and the things we buy must do what we want them to. If they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t, they werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t good buys . . no matter how cheap they appeared at the time.

I get a lot of calls that are triggered by someone being offered what looks like â&#x20AC;&#x153;a really good dealâ&#x20AC;? on something being positioned as a cowherd supplement. As critical as nutrition is to performance and the bottom line, this is not the place for impulse buying. Supplemental feeds need to be evaluated on their impact on the

net nutritional yield of the total diet.

In many cases, their influence on total dry matter intake and fiber digestion can have as much â&#x20AC;&#x201C; or more â&#x20AC;&#x201C; of an effect than their direct contribution of energy, protein, or other nutrients.

Intake Some years ago, Oklahoma State University published a set of general rules of thumb for estimating intakes of typical beef cow diets. Based on information from multiple research trials, they are still useful and informative guidelines. In the case of pregnant, nonâ&#x20AC;?lactating cows, expected intake of lowâ&#x20AC;?quality forages would be: â&#x20AC;˘ Unsupplemented, 1.5% of body weight

Digestibility Digestibility, which basically determines how much usable energy is released from what is eaten, is not a static value for a given feedstuff, especially in ruminant animals. The balance of available nutrients, the number and composition of rumen microbes, and ruminal conditions such as pH all help determine how thoroughly a feed is broken down,

Broadly speaking, when diets are based on low‐ to mid‐quality hays, crop residues, or dormant grass: • Supplementation to meet ruminal requirements for protein increases fiber digestion (research shows improvements ranging from 5 to 20%); • Moderate levels of starch supplementation lead to a shift in rumen bacterial species and conditions, causing a drop in fiber digestion (this reduction has ranged from 5 to nearly 50% in published research, but is often in the 10‐15% range); • Molasses and sugars have been shown to improve fiber digestion; • When fat content of the diet exceeds 5%, fiber digestion suffers (some recently conducted research puts this depression at 5‐10%).

Net Result The need to consider this information while making supplement purchase decisions becomes apparent when we actually calculate the net result of various feeding scenarios.

The following tables do just that, looking at the expected intake and digestibility of forage with different supplementation options.

Adjustments are based on the more conservative values from the research cited above. The numbers that matter to the cow, and to us, are in the final column – the expected total energy supply available to her for support of maintenance and pregnancy.

This certainly doesn’t represent all the potential types of feeding programs available to beef cow producers.

And because not every operation has the same goals in mind, there is not a single ‘best’ strategy to follow. But it should serve as a clear reminder that supplements are not all equal!

Purchase decisions need to look beyond price per ton – even when it looks like a “good deal” – to make sure the end result meets nutritional and performance expectations.

Environmental Compliance for Kentucky Dairies

airy producers all over the United States are facing a changing farming environment. In order to remain competitive and sustainable, producers are being challenged by economic factors and environmental regulations. In Kentucky, the first step toward environmental compliance for farms is the development of an Agriculture Water Quality Plan. By law, agricultural operations in Kentucky of 10 acres or more are required to develop and implement Agriculture Water Quality Plans and, in many cases, Nutrient Management Plans (NMPs).

These plans are designed to reduce pollution and to document practices that protect water quality.

The Agriculture Water Quality Act required that all farms with 10 acres or more create water quality plans and imple-

ment best management practices (BMPs), including nutrient management planning, by 2001, but many producers are still not aware of these requirements. To create more awareness, opportunities such as the County Agricultural Investment Program (CAIP) and state and federal cost share programs require a water quality plan to be eligible for funding. It is not enough to have a self-certification stating that a plan exists; producers need to provide a list of implemented BMPs. DAIRY NEWS could include planned grazing systems, filter or buffer strips, animal waste storage structures, stormwater management, nutrient management plans, and limited access to streams for livestock. In addition, water quality plans should include information about proper handling of chemicals used around the operation, as well as maintenance of septic systems and other farmstead elements.

The most important BMP for dairy operations is nutrient management, which allows farmers to use nutrients in manure (specifically nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) for optimal economic benefit while minimizing the impact on the environment. If managed correctly, the nutrients and organic matter in manure can be recycled to produce crops and save farmers money. On the other hand, if managed incorrectly, manure can contribute to pollution that threatens water quality.

Nutrient management planning involves monitoring and recording all aspects of soil fertility, manure sampling, and crop production so that air, soil, and water resources

are not compromised.

There are two types of documents that may be used for nutrient management planning: a nutrient management plan (NMP) or a comprehensive nutrient management plan (CNMP). In 2011, the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) modified their policy to require all producers requesting funding or technical assistance for any practice pertaining to manure management to have a CNMP. The requirement of the CNMP also applies for state cost share programs administered through the Division of Conservation, since it utilizes NRCS personnel for technical assistance. These policies provide a financial incentive for compliance with the Kentucky Agriculture Water Quality Act. Generally, a CNMP is written by a professional other than the producer, is very thorough and detailed, and accounts for all aspects of nutrients on the farm. A NMP is written by the producer and is a more basic, hands-on document. The concept behind each document is the same: know the sources of nutrients

on the farm, have a plan for efficiently utilizing the nutrients, and keep good records of land application. Regardless of the specific plan required or implemented, it is important for dairy producers to understand the concepts of nutrient management and to try to minimize nutrient pollution of valuable natural resources, such as surface and ground water.

In addition to these planning documents, dairy producers that use a liquid waste handling system are required to have a Kentucky No Discharge Operational Permit (KNDOP). Producers that have a KNDOP are strictly prohibited from discharging pollutants into the waters of the Commonwealth.

By implementing an Agriculture Water Quality Plan and a Nutrient Management Plan and obtaining a KNDOP if required, Kentucky dairy producers can help protect both surface and groundwater, remain in compliance, and maintain a sustainable operation that can be passed down to future generations.

your operation: • Write down the ongoing or planned activities on your property.

• Contact your local Conservation District or use the online tool provided by the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service and the Kentucky Division of Conservation (www.ca.uky. edu/awqa) to answer questions about your operation.

• Document the implementation of all BMPs and update the plan as operations change or maintenance is performed.

These water quality plans not only help protect the environment, but they also improve production and act as a safeguard for producers if environmental regulators visit the farm. Kentucky 2012 Farm Cash Receipts on Track to Break $5 Billion LOUISVILLE, KY., (DEC. 6, 2012)

P

reliminary U.S. Department of Agriculture reports indicate Kentucky agricultural cash receipts for January through September totaled $3.6 billion, 10 percent higher than 2011’s record level for the same period.

Despite weather impacts on yield and high feed costs, agricultural economists with the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture foresee 2012’s cash receipts in the state will total $5.3 billion.

Will Snell, Kenny Burdine, Cory Walters and Tim Woods, all from UK’s Department of Agricultural Economics, along with Kentucky Farm Business Management Program coordinator Jerry Pierce and JeffStringer from the UK Department of Forestry presented a 2013 Kentucky farm economic outlook and an overview of 2012 as part of the annual Kentucky Farm Bureau Federation conference in Louisville on Dec. 6.

Official USDA 2012 cash receipts for Kentucky won’t be released until summer 2013, but Snell said the UK economists are seeing high returns in corn, cattle and tobacco and improvement in the equine sector. The typical range for net farm income in Kentucky is between $1 billion and $1.5 billion.

“Boosted by significant crop insurance payments, net farm income for 2012 will be toward the high end of that range, but well below the $2.1 billion record high achieved in 2005 following the tobacco buyout,” he said.

In the midst of one of the nation’s worst droughts, the USDA is projecting U.S. net farm income for 2012 to remain near record levels at $114 billion, just 3 percent below the previous record set in 2011.

Snell noted that export value remained near record levels in 2012.

“Just as in 2011, high prices were very effective in offsetting lower volume, a slight appreciation of the U.S. dollar and weak global economic growth,” he said.

Despite significant yield losses, corn receipts for 2012 will continue to rival poultry as Kentucky’s top agricultural enterprise.

“Responding to higher prices, producers planted additional acres this year, which helped keep production from goinglower,” Walters said.

Walters said there would be fewer ending stocks, especially for corn and soybeans, approaching the upcoming plant-

ingseason, and prices will continue to be strong, providing incentive for growers to produce more.

“A normal or better growing season coupled with increased planted acreage will put heavy downward pressure on prices,” he said. “Alternatively, a poor growing season will result in a repeat of 2012 price action.”

In the poultry industry, broiler production declined slightly in 2012 after

hitting a peak in 2011, but exports hit a record high and accounted for more than 19 percent of production. Higher 2012 prices have partially offset increased feed costs, reducing the impact on overall production levels. The USDA predicts exports will remain at high levels, leaving less than 80 pounds of chicken per person on the domestic market, which is the lowest level in 10 years. UK agricultural economist Lee Meyer believes prices are likely to rise 5 to 10 percent in 2013.

Snell said this past year has been the most interesting season for burley tobacco during the post-buyout era.

“Based on the world burley supply/ demand balance entering 2012, it was apparent that tobacco companies were going to request that Kentucky burley farmers increase acreage. It was not clear, however, how farmers would respond,” he said.

Farmers responded by planting 14 percent more acres. Tobacco yielded fairly well, in spite of the drought, and curing conditions led to one of the better quality crops in recent years, Snell said.

The equine industry sales held steady this year, but prices were generally improved. Burdine expects total receipts todecrease slightly in 2012, but believes the equine market is showing signs of improvement, with improved prices and steady stud fees likely.

Spring 2012 cattle market set records through May, largely due to tight supplies and excellent spring weather, however feeder cattle prices fell sharply through the summer as the drought and heat caused a surge in corn prices. Heavy feeders regained some ground by fall, Burdine said, but calves remained well below their spring high.

“Tight supplies should provide solid underpinning for the 2013 feeder cattle market,” Burdine said. “Weather challenges and competition for ground have slowed much interest in expansion, even with improved prices.”

It’s been 10 years since Kentucky growers started to concentrate on diver-

Industry trends point toward 2012 gross sales amounting to $110 million to $120 million, slightly less than or equal to 2011.

Kentucky is the leading producer of hardwood saw and veneer logs in the South and in the top three nationally. A total of 596 million board feet were produced from Kentuckyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s forests in 2012.

The value of all delivered roundwood for

2012 is estimated at $182.9 million and reflects a reduction in cash receipts for woodland owners in 2012. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I believe that, in 2013, hardwood lumber production and its associated industries will halt the declines weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve seen over the past several years,â&#x20AC;? said Stringer. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Modest increases in housing starts may forecast an eventual uptick in hardwood lumber production next year, but donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t expect an increase in employment yet.

Even with the tough markets in 2012, Kentuckyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s forestry sector, including wood

and paper producers, was able to contribute an estimated $6.3 billion of direct revenue to the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s economy.â&#x20AC;?

On the whole, the UK agricultural economists were guardedly optimistic about 2013. They predict that relatively strong prices, increased crop acres and global demand will enable Kentucky agricultural cash receipts to continue to grow to between $5.4 to $5.6 billion. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our main concern is what will happen when approximately 15 to 20 percent of our current net farm income disappears

with the tobacco buyout payments ending in 2014 and the likely elimination of direct payments,â&#x20AC;? Snell said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Kentucky agriculture will have to make up approximately $200 million in losses in the marketplace, which will put more pressure on growth in local food markets and expansion in exports.â&#x20AC;?

Dealing With Calving Problems

ometimes a calf cannot be born because he’s not in a position that allows him to enter the birth canal. In other situations he may not be able to progress through the birth canal because he’s too large, or a limb is caught on the pelvic brim, or the head is turned back. Knowing what’s wrong and how to correct it can make a difference in whether you end up with a live calf.

Dr. James England (University of Idaho, Caine Center) says that probably less than 2 percent of births are actual malpresentations. “A calf coming back feet first is not a malpresentation, because it can be born,” he says. Roughly 5 percent of calves come backward.

FEATURE born, unless the tail is cocked up (and catching on the cow’s pelvis),” he says.

A breech calf, with buttocks aimed toward the birth canal and the hind feet up toward the front of the cow, cannot be born unless you can reach in and flex those legs and bring them into the birth canal.

“There are many combinations of improper positioning, such as legs back, head turned back, etc. What it boils down to is trying to determine what you can reach and what you can straighten out. One of the hardest things to deal with is twins,” he says.

This is especially challenging if they are trying to come through the birth canal at the same time and it’s difficult to sort out which leg belongs to which twin.

“My general recommendation is that if you can’t get something straightened out and coming properly within an hour’s time, you need to call your veterinarian for help or a C-section. Fortunately, proper selec-

tion of calving-ease bulls for heifers has minimized calving problems on many ranches. Many of the problems that do occur can be readily straightened out. I have not personally run into problems like schistosoma reflexus, where the intestines are outside the body of the fetus. Those usually have to be delivered by C-section or a fetotomy. They are all twisted up, with legs coming off in wrong places, and they can’t come through the birth canal,” says England. Other impossibilities for normal delivery include lupine calves that have deformed, fused joints--the legs cannot straighten nor flex.

“One thing I’ve discovered with dystocia, and what I tell students and ranchers, is that if you have a calf coming through the pelvis and you think it’s hung up, is that as long as you can push your hand between the calf ’s head (or shoulder, or hips) and the cow’s pelvis (without tearing your knuckle off ), he will fit through,” he

says. If you can put your hand over the calf ’s head, he’ll come through the pelvis.

“It’s also a good idea to feel all the way around the calf (not just the top of the head) to make sure there’s nothing abnormal with the pelvis—no protrusions the calf might hang up on. I’ve seen cases where backward calves were pulled and the bottom of the brim of the pelvis catches on the calf ’s ribcage and peels the breastplate back. Another rule of thumb is to never put two men on a chain or more than 2 women, or you may injure the calf. The main thing with a difficult birth is just taking your time and trying to straighten the calf to where it can be pulled,” he says. It also helps, once you have the calf coming properly, to try to turn him so his pelvis is coming through the cow’s pelvis at a 45-degree angle. There’s more room for the calf to come through that way, without his hips catching on the cow’s pelvis.

It helps to put lots of fluid/lubricant around the calf. “This makes it easier to get the calf to move and roll so you can reposition him, or pull a large calf. For delivering calves, whether it’s a normal or abnormal position, apply a lot of lubricant to your arms, and also to the calf if things are tight inside the cow,” he says. You can get a good obstetrical lubricant from your veterinarian.

“Most of the bovine products that you can buy by the gallon work well.

The lubrication gels are generally water-soluble and I just dilute some of this with water so I can pump it in or pour it into the uterus with a stomach tube. I want to get it all around the fetus, and I sometimes put in as much as 15 gallons,” he says. “One of the things I use, especially if I have a calf with a turnedback neck, is a tool I’ve made that’s a rod with a U on one end of it.

The way it’s curved, I can put that end in the corner of the mouth and hold the head up while I reach down with the other hand.” It’s like putting your fingers in the corner of the mouth to hold the head, but you don’t need to have your hand there, especially if it’s difficult for you to get two arms in the cow at the same time.

“A lot of these calves with a head back are hard to get because even when you pull the head up it just goes right back down again,” he says. You get the head and start pulling the calf, then discover the head is no longer entering the birth canal; it has slipped back down

below the pelvic brim again.

“This tool also works for trying to correct a breech calf when you have to push him back into the uterus far enough to straighten each hind leg and get it into the birth canal. I can place the straight end of it at the calf ’s rectum and push the calf forward enough to get in there and straighten the legs out,” he says.

“With some calves, the first important thing is to figure out whether you’ve got front or back legs. That’s basically just determining which way the joints flex— whether you have hocks or knees,” says England.

“The most common problem we see is that the calf is just too big.

This is more common than a calf that simply needs to be straightened,” he says. The latter situation can range from simple (one front leg turned back at the fetlock joint or knee) to complex (such as both

front legs back, a leg turned back at the shoulder, head back, or breech).

“This is where it helps if you have a way to push that calf back while you manipulate the leg or head.” It also helps if the cow is standing up, giving you more room to maneuver the calf and to have gravity in your favor when pushing him back down into the uterus. If the cow is lying down, all the pressure of her rumen and abdominal contents are against the calf and uterus and you don’t have as much room to manipulate the calf—especially if the head is turned back.

“If I have a calf with legs back or a breech, it helps if you approach the leg from the opposite side and reach across under the calf and grab and pull the leg crossways underneath. Then you can routinely turn it around safely. If you just go down the leg and double it back, you almost always get a toe hung up under the brim of the pelvis. If you

have a calf with a front leg back, do the same thing. Go in on the opposite side and reach across and twist it. There’s a lot more flex that way. You have to also make sure you don’t catch the umbilicus and pull it up, too, especially with a calf coming backward,” he says. If one of the legs brings the cord with it as it straightens out, the cord will be pulled apart as the calf comes through the birth canal, disrupting his lifeline before he can breathe.

You always have to be careful to cup the foot in your hand while you do any repositioning, so it won’t scrape the uterine lining or poke a hole in the uterus. Long-legged calves can often be challenging, and they tend to have more trouble getting straightened out on their own and headed into the birth canal.

Sometimes a long-bodied, longlegged calf is more prone to having a leg turned back.

This year KBC participated in the AHA’s HeartWalks, Go Red for Women events, Healthy Family Training Camp.

During the events, KBC staff talked to attendees about the recent research on Beef in an Optimal Lean Diet (BOLD) and showed them how to incorporate lean beef everyday with easy, delicious and nutritious beef dishes.

With this partnership, KBC was able to reach several thousand consumers and influencers directly and indirectly.

he CPH Report expands the analysis of CPH-45 sales by calculating the net added returns per head for all sales on all classes of cattle across the state. Each month, we examine the results from the previous monthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sales using actual prices and costs to determine profitability for those producers participating in CPH-45 sales. This report summarizes the CPH-45 sales held in Guthrie, Richmond, Lexington, Paris and Owensboro during the first week of December. Note that the Guthrie sale requires 60 day weaning and both Guthrie and Richmond were non PVP sales.

Column Descriptions Weaning Weight - represents the payweight of the cattle at the time of weaning.

Sex - sex of the calf.

Wean Avg. Price - the average price of calves in that weight category as reported on

the KDA Market Reports approximately 50 days prior to the CPH sale ($/cwt).

CPH Weight - the payweight at the CPH sale assuming an average daily gain of 2.6 lbs/ day.

CPH Price - the average price of calves in that weight range at the CPH sale held on the date listed ($/cwt).

State Avg. - the average price of calves in that weight category as reported on the KDA Market Reports the same week as the CPH sale ($/cwt).

CPH vs State Avg. Price-the difference in $/cwt between the CPH price and the state average price.

Cost of Gain - the cost of gain using average feed prices (bulk feed-3 ton minimum) for the dates listed. Rations are formulated for 2.8 lbs. of average daily gain. An additional 10% was added to calculate heifer cost of gain.

ecember always proves to be a busy month of holiday preparation, convention planning, and attending county meetings. At the beginning of December I attended the Young Producer’s Council planning meeting. They had a pot-luck dinner with a small group representing the five KCA membership regions.

Don Reynolds, KCA President-Elect addressed the group about his excitement for the group’s future and his willingness to help them in the upcom-

ing year. I spoke to the group about the convention events and their membership meeting agenda. Daren Williams, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association is speaking to them about “Engaging Consumers in the Beef Discussion.” The group appointed regional contacts and set their five meeting dates and locations for 2013 in each of the KCA membership regions. KBN has plans to host regional production practice field days in 2013 and 2014 to give young farmers an opportunity to learn new skills needed to manage their own operations or assist in a family operation.

ent review committee and Governor’s Office of Agricultural Policy (GOAP) staff to finalize the details of the KBN VII application in anticipation of the board’s final decision on December 14.

This process took meetings, phone calls, and numerous emails with the GOAP staff and committee members to discuss and answer questions they had about the application. I appreciate the time the committee members and staff took to go through our application and programs to gain a better understanding of their impact for Kentucky farmers.

The KADB and GOAP staff should be commended for their dedication toward the Kentucky Agricultural Development Fund making sure each applicant and program will somehow impact rural Kentucky agriculture. The board and staff show huge passion for the future of Kentucky agriculture. If you plan to attend the KCA Convention in January

please attend the Opening General Session to hear Joel Neaveill, Governor’s Office of Agricultural Policy Chief of Staff discuss the “Impact of Kentucky Agricultural Development Fund.”

The programs KBN VII will provide are a culmination of the UK/ KBN Beef Leadership Conference that took place this summer. New KBN programs: Master Marketer, Graze 300, Beef Production Efficiencies Conferences, Professional Cattlemen, Cattle Handling & Well Being, and Young farmer field days. Continuing KBN programs: Carcass Ultrasound, CPH-45, Age & Source Verification, Field Associate Support, Master Cattlemen, Master Stocker, BQA, MAG-60, and NYBLS. Please watch for more information about these programs in 2013!

ALLTECH BRINGS THE POWER OF GENETICS TO THE FARM LEXINGTON, KY

I

t is often said that we feed our livestock better than we feed ourselves. Those words may now ring a little truer on many farms across the United States. Alltech, a global leader in animal health and nutrition, recently launched a series of new species solution programs aimed at helping animals reach their full genetic potential.

“Yesterday, when we discussed animal nutrition, we talked about increasing performance through a stress pack,” said Dr. Kate Jacques, Alltech’s director of nutrition. “Today we are discussing the gene chip and how we can feed our animals to up regulate their genes, improve immune response, advance carcass quality and leave less stress on the environment. It’s a whole new ball game.”

This shift in industry focus chang-

es the priority from just getting more nutrients into the animal, to understanding the degree to which each nutrient affects animal production at the cell and tissue levels. Alltech utilizes the genechip, a DNA microarray, to measure gene expression and allow for scientists to analyze a very large number of genes at once. With this technology, scientists have found nutrients are “gene switches” that regulate bio-functions.

According to a recent survey conducted by Alltech across the United States, 33 percent of farmers said if they had unlimited resources, the first area of their operation they would seek to improve would be feed costs, followed by another 33 percent stating commodity prices. With these increased prices in mind as well as the additional costs associated with supplements and additives, Alltech’s new solution program combines several technologies to synergistically work to enhance performance, improve animal health and increase return on invest-

ment all while helping that individual animal reach its full genetic potential.

“Through our partnerships with these highly-respected institutions over the past several years, ASA has built an impressive database of genotypes with over 3,000 Simmental, SimAngus and Simbrah samples,” says Dr. Wade Shafer, director of performance programs.

Dr. Dorian Garrick, Iowa State University Lush Chair in animal breeding and genetics and NBCEC executive director, has led the project research and development. “We have been able to take advantage of the data collected from the 3,000 animals sampled through the ASA, which includes sires from other breeds that have been used in ASA member herds,” says Dr. Garrick. “The immediate benefit we have today is the improvement in the predictions of offspring when cattle producers are making important selection and mating decisions for the future.”

To order DNA testing kits, ASA members should contact ASA. The Association will mail testing kits directly to producers for DNA sample gathering.

Following collection, producers should mail the completed DNA samples to GeneSeek for processing. Results will be returned to ASA in a timely fashion for dissemination to the breeder and inclusion into the ASA database.

“Often, a Farm Credit MidAmerica scholarship is not just a scholarship,” said Sarah Ayer, a Western Kentucky University student and Farm Credit Scholarship recipient. “Although extra money to put toward my education was fantastic, I also quickly learned of the Farm Credit Internship Program. I applied for an intern position and the rest was history. The 12 weeks I spent with Farm Credit provided me with exposure to farming operations that were much different than what I was familiar with. The Farm Credit Scholarship partnered with my internship cultivated my interest in diverse farming operations – I no longer have a single definition for what farming is.”

In addition to the Farm Credit Scholarship, the cooperative also provides scholarships to 4-H, FFA and universities across the association’s four-state territory.

Take a break when needed. It’s better to take your rest breaks at opportune times than to have an “assembly line mentality”. If you are working cattle, for example, take a break between groups – not with cows in the chute.

But remember that tired workers make more mistakes or have more injuries.

Finally, in my opinion, you should take time to “re-charge your battery” and to evaluate what is really important in your life (like family). Manage your time so that you can accomplish everything that you have to and leave enough time for things that you want to do.

Take time to make good decisions and to think things through before acting on them. Or as the poet Omar Khayyam wrote a thousand years ago – “The moving finger writes and having writ moves on. Nor all your piety nor wit shall lure it back again to cancel half a line, nor all your tears wash out a word of it.”

Ultimately you are responsible for your own actions. Remember, as you work to maintain the family farm don’t forget to maintain the farm family!

Timely Tips for January Spring-Calving Cow Herd • Study the performance of last year’s calf crop and plan for improvement. Plan your breeding program and consider a better herd sire(s). Select herd sires which will allow you to meet your goals and be willing to pay for superior animals.

• Consider vaccinating the cows to help prevent calf scours.

• Start cows on the high magnesium mineral supplement soon. Consider protein supplementation if hay is less than 10% crude protein. If cows are thin, begin energy (grain) supplementation now.

• Get ready for calving season! See that all equipment and materials are ready, including obstetrical equipment, record forms or booklets, eartags, scales for obtaining birthweights, etc. Prepare

a calving area where assistance can be provided easily if needed. Purchase ear tags for calves and number them ahead of time if possible. Plan for enough labor to watch/assist during the calving period.

• Move early-calving heifers and cows to pastures that are relatively small and easily accessible to facilities in case calving assistance is needed. Keep them in good condition but don’t overfeed them at this time. Increase their nutrient intake after they calve.

• Keep replacement heifer calves gaining enough to reach their “target” breeding weight (65% mature weight) by spring.

Fall Calving Cow Herd • Provide clean windbreaks and shelter for young calves.

• Breeding season continues. Keep fall calving cows on accumulated pasture as long as possible, then start feeding hay/grain. Don’t let these cows get too thin.

• Remove bulls by the end of the month. That means that your 2013 fall calving season will end in early November.

• Catch up on castrating, dehorning and implanting.

General • Feed hay in areas where mud is less of a problem. Consider preparing a feeding area with gravel over geotextile fabric.

• Increase feed as the temperature drops, especially when the weather is extremely cold and damp. When temperature drops to 15°F, cattle need access to windbreaks.

• Provide water at all times. Cattle need 5 to 11 gallons per head daily even in the coldest weather. Be aware of frozen pond hazards. Keep ice “broken” so that cattle won’t walk out on the pond trying to get water.

•Consider renovating and improving pastures with legumes, especially if they have poor stands of grass or if they contain high levels of the fescue endophyte.
