As I sit here with my hot chocolate in hand (did I say a shot of Rumchata), I relish in the beauty of winter with the sun dancing on the snow. Finding beauty even in the dead of winter is a perfect example of the fact that sometimes it takes extra effort to find the positive. When the snow is still blowing against the window-pane, my thoughts turn to spring when the first robin appears and the crocus peeks out of the ground. The wait for spring is hard, so I try to busy myself with “I’ll get to it later” projects. I’ve cleaned closets and drawers, mended apparel, and thought about regrouting my bath. Then I begin to think about all the upcoming holidays. You all know I love to celebrate. First comes Mardi Gras which falls on February 13; what a great excuse to start your day with a beignet and end your day drinking green beer. I hope the green beer puts me in the mood for love because the next day is Valentine’s Day. I read some good advice that experts say you should just do you, whatever makes you feel good. Be sure to read to read the LOVE IS LOVE, RIGHT? article in this issue. BTW, this year Ash Wednesday falls on February 14, Valentine’s Day; also, a prank or two could infiltrate Easter egg hunts as Easter falls on April 1, otherwise known as April Fools’ Day. Be sure to make time for yourself and settle down with this issue of FLAIR. Our advertisers serve as a go-to for information. We hope that you will enjoy reading FLAIR magazine online and in print.

Even if you have the most awesome partner in the world, having a best friend is absolutely essential too. Show that friend some love and honor the amazing relationship you have with him or her. Laughter, loyalty, and honestly rank high on everyone’s list of what we need from our friends. If you’ve got someone in your life who’s always there with these qualities for you, do something special to celebrate that relationship.

is LOVE, Right?

TRY OUT SOME OF THESE SUGGESTIONS WITH YOUR VALENTINE’S BFF

1. A new workout craze (Kickboxing or Zumba) 2. Paint & Wine classes can be fun 3. Couples’ Yoga — some poses require a partner and a fair amount of trust — who can you trust more than a good friend, right? 4. Accompany your friend to his or her favorite workout class as a guest, if it’s not where you normally go. Don’t workout, yourself? Well, that’s all the more reason to show up and it certainly will show your friend how much you care! 5. Day-trips on a Sunday can be easier in terms of traffic, but Saturdays might be better in terms of restaurants or shops that you find open. So, choose a date and go adventuring into the unknown! Make a plan to drive 2 hours North, East, South, or West and see where you end up! (With GPS and cellphones, you’ll know where you are once you arrive, but don’t spoil the fun unless there’s a potential emergency!) 6. Binge on Netflix and your favorite snacks 7. Create a serious “Thelma & Louise” adventure – whether you choose skydiving, a meditation retreat, private yoga lesson, hike, or a day/weekend trip to NYC, San Francisco, Seattle, or some other great destination for the day. Do something with a friend that you’ve both always wanted to do, but don’t have the courage to do on your own.

Boutique Unique is a quaint little “unique” shop in Glasgow run by the mother and daughter duo, Deb Alexander and Jessica Gilbert. What makes this store different from the rest? “We feature only quality, hand-crafted items made in Kentucky,” said Jessica. “Plus, we do furniture and kitchen cabinet transformations.” If your kitchen is looking a bit tired, you don’t have to spend a fortune to give it a new “unique” look. Let Deb and Jessica bring new life to your cabinets. They help choose what color will go well in your house, what goes with your walls, flooring, and countertops. Deb says, “We always try to understand what they [the customers] picture their unfinished kitchen looking like.” A standard kitchen usually takes four to five days, with larger ones taking up to two weeks. Deb and Jess start with the prep and cleaning; remove all hardware and doors; prime; paint; distress and/or glaze; and then finish with protectant. Then they rehang the doors and hardware. They try to leave the kitchen as usable as possible each afternoon when they leave. The store sells and uses exclusively General Finishes products for their furniture and cabinet transformations and recently entered some of their furniture and cabinets into the company’s Design Challenge Contest. “We were absolutely stunned and thrilled to have one of our kitchen cabinet transformations to be selected second in the nation from a long list of very talented and gorgeous entries,” said Jess. “We just feel so honored to be recognized for all of our hard work and efforts and to know that the hours and hours of training and classes have been beneficial,” she added. Boutique Unique offers custom furniture and cabinet makeovers, along with a sweet farmhousetype store featuring items hand-crafted in Kentucky. The ladies encourage customers to drop in at 302 Happy Valley Road in Glasgow or to call 270-579-8647 if they are interested in a furniture or cabinet estimate.

Stories f rom the

3 34383$5 6 3 ( — by Ellen Danford

Most people prefer to not venture outside of their homes in the cold winter months that often fall shortly after Christmas in Kentucky. A trip to the shops on the square seems odd in the face of such biting cold, but the warmth found inside local stores makes the trip worth it, even in the face of rough weather. Candles are easily paired with thoughts of winter and the cold, and Candle Makers on the Square does not disappoint in this regard. As soon as you walk in the door, an exquisite smell wafts over you, and the shop immediately feels cozy. Even better, every candle is made in the store, including one that captures the very smell of the shop itself. The open layout exudes warmth, as do the employees who greet you with a warm welcome. It may seem a far jump from candles to chocolate, but it’s only just a short hop down the street. Mary Jane’s Chocolates boasts not only delicious assortments to satisfy your chocolate cravings, but also family ties that sweeten the deal. The chocolate is made by Mary Jane, and the shop is run by her and her daughter. The whole shop and its people create a warm atmosphere to fight the cold outdoors. Turning back towards the fountain, you will run into Reclaimed, a thrift store that is giving more than goods a second chance. The store is run by Hope House of Bowling Green, and all proceeds are given to people in order to pay grants, debts, and other projects of goodwill. The store seeks to glorify God and help people with its sales, and asking employees what makes the warmly-lit shop special will give a beautiful picture of the spread of kindness. Though these three businesses don’t take up the whole square, they do represent the magnificent mix of stories and quirks that forms one of Bowling Green’s most picturesque areas. Each store, and every person in it, is another story. Throughout the winter, and even into the spring as everything thaws, know that there is warmth in talking to others and looking for beauty in the picturesque square of downtown Bowling Green.

Ellen is a freshman at Western Kentucky University. She enjoys exploring Bowling Green and reading and playing in ensembles at the school. Though the future remains uncertain, she is excited to discover how it will unfold.

Ladies of the Garden Superstition, Good Fortune And Pest Eating Machines –— Yvonne McQuitty, The Plant Lady Did you know lady beetles or ladybugs can be good luck? Back in Victorian times, people actually believed they would receive something new if a ladybug landed on their bodies. Or have you heard that if you Oak Scale-destroying Lady Beetle kill a ladybug, you would have bad luck? That one must have come from an old farmer who tried to scare a bunch of boys who were killing his helpful, pest eating, little beetles. In modern times, we see ladybugs as cute creatures that are the subject of toddler outfits and nursery rhymes Striped Lady Beetle (“Ladybird, ladybird, fly away home, your house is on fire and your children are gone”). There are about 450 varieties of lady beetles in America and they are not considered really true bugs. The spots Twice-stabbed Cactus Lady Beetle on their bodies and the different shades of orange indicate the species of the ladybug, but they all have one thing in common —they are a beneficial insect. They’re often found around soft leaf plants of the vegetable garden and Myzia interrupts the new growth of vines and roses. This is where the pests are. The ladybug feeds on a variety of slow-moving insects including Aphids, Moth eggs, Mites, Scale, Thrips, Leaf Hoppers, Mealybugs, Chinch Bugs, Asparagus Beetle larvae, Whiteflies and a host of other garden pests.

Life Cycle ) g u b y d llidae (La Coccine

As a garden consultant, my experience is that most gardeners don’t know how to identify all the stages of the ladybug and often kill them before they become the recognizable hard-shelled beetle Convergent Lady Beetle Parenthesis Lady Beetle we’ve all come to love. Another thing about ladybugs which is an unlucky experience is the terrible odor they create when attacked. I have accidently crushed a few in my day while gardening. Sometimes with my glove, many times in the pockets of my garden Seven-spotted Lady Beetle Mexican Bean Beetle apron, I find the yellow stains they leave behind are nasty. The really bright colored ladybugs are the ones most toxic if eaten. So pay attention to your pet’s sleeping area, for these little gals will Ashy-Gray Lady Beetle Nine-spotted Lady Beetle make them sick. Most of the time, their bright colors and foul odor keep their predators away. So, if you’re into gardening and not into pests, may I suggest plantng some Cilantro, Dill, Fennel, Yarrow and Sweet Alyssum, and you might Spotted Lady Beetle Hippodamia specials attract some ladybugs to your garden and maybe bring yourself some good luck...if you believe in such superstition.

••••••••••••••••••••••••• HERE’S THE LADY BEETLES’ CYCLE:

• THE EGG STAGE: You will often find the eggs of the ladybug on the under leaves of your garden plants. • THE PUPA STAGE: Here the ladybug is a soft, plump of orange with little black spots down each side. • THE LARVAE STAGE: In this stage, the ladybug is long, black-orange with spikes on its back. She’s not in the cute lady beetle outfit yet, but in this stage, she is a aphid eating machine - known to eat up to 50 Aphids per day.

My first exposure to quilt piecing was by my grandmother, fondly known as “Ma Harper.” She was very particular and hand pieced everything with tiny, perfect stitches. I tried to follow in her footsteps, but, unfortunately, I was too impatient to hand piece and quickly changed to machine piecing using as many time-saving techniques as possible. My first quilts consisted of small, simple wall hangings. From there, I graduated to larger quilts. Designing the quilt is what I enjoy most: deciding what to do, what colors to use, and thinking outside the box. There are many types of quilts, such as scrap, memory, applique, crazy quilt, and paper pieced, to name a few. I would like to share my experiences with memory quilts. You can get your creative juices flowing and find that there is no limit to what type of quilt you can make. You can make one for any occasion, such as a celebration of life, retirement, anniversary, or genealogy. The memory quilt that I have made most often is the t-shirt quilt, but I have also made variations of it, including clothing from relatives (shirts, sweatshirts, blouses, etc.) or photography. The first memory quilt I made was a t-shirt quilt for my husband. He is a motorcycle enthusiast and had many t-shirts that were his favorites and were well-worn, to “Quilt top that my beloved put it nicely. I put several of them Grandmother Mazie pieced. in this quilt, used denim fabric to Mazie lived to the ripe old age bind the t-shirt squares, and sewed of 98 and was called Ma Harper patches that he had collected on by all of her Grandchildren.” the bindings. You can customize the quilt to different needs or wants, which is the beauty of it; it all depends on the person you are making it for and what his or her interests are. Another memory quilt was for my son using his team shirts from the age of three through high school for whatever sports he was playing. I tried to use the back of the shirt that had his name on it and the front with the team name. Also, I scanned his team pictures, printed them on muslin, and incorporated them into the outer border. I have used a regular quilt pattern as a wedding gift for a close friend. There was blank space in the middle of the quilt block for a personal message for the bride and groom, plus a signature. It was a hit at the reception and hopefully has provided many good memories. Pictures could also be added to the center of the blocks as an option. It takes a little planning and gathering of articles to be used in your quilt, whether it’s t-shirts, pictures, or clothing, but the reward is so worth it! 14 • Flair • 2018 • January/February/March

So many folks have asked, “How did a massage therapist get involved in writing a cookbook?” Well, there is always a story; here’s the super short version. In 2015, after being laid off from multiple jobs, I decided to put an undergraduate degree on hold to pursue the goal of becoming a licensed massage therapist. Like most adults who have ever decided to go back to school know, education is costly and life’s expenses do not get put on hold, so one must be creative in their ambitions. I loved cooking with the products from Stuarto’s so much, that I took a part-time job there while going to school. Customers would suggest that I write a cookbook after chatting with them and offering up suggestions. Being the foodies that we are, my fiancé and I decided to go for it. After many long hours, late meals, and personal sacrifices, I am now a licensed massage therapist opening up my first brick and mortar location, and we are both cookbook authors. The cookbook is titled An Ancient Appetite and is available at your local Stuarto’s Olive Oil Company store, or by searching Facebook for “An Ancient Appetite.” While you are at Stuarto’s, pick up a few of the items listed in bold font within the cookbook to try one of the recipes for yourself. Thank you to each and every one of you for supporting us! We look forward to seeing you soon & much peace. — Justin Bowling Green folks and neighbors, visit Stuarto’s in Buckhead Square - 760 Campbell Lane (270904-5948) - Tuesday thru Sunday, and let the staff help you with what you need for these recipes!

If green beer isn’t your thing, you’re not out of luck...

Five Unique Ways to Celebrate S t . P a t r i c k ’s D a y There was a time when guzzling green beer in a crowded bar seemed like an excellent way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, or perhaps you preferred rubbing elbows with other revelers at a Leprauchan-filled party while wearing your prized “Kiss Me I’m Irish” t-shirt (regardless of your heritage). Whether you’ve outgrown those traditions or just want to make some new ones, here are five fresh ways to go green this March 17th.

1 Go Beyond Bangers

Invite your boyfriend or husband to take an Irish cooking class at a local culinary school or a literature class at the local university. You’ll bond over your new knowledge of lesserknown Dublin delicacies and works by Jonathan Swift, James Joyce, and Oscar Wilde. If you can’t escape to a kitchen or classroom, order a copy of The Irish Pub Cookbook, which features modern takes on Irish pub grub, like salmon cakes with dill sauce.

2 Run a 5K for Fun

Shamrock Scrambles and Leprechaun Leaps are taking a cue from Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trots and bringing a healthy activity to a traditionally booze-laden event. Many cities are hosting holiday 5Ks. Join one, and you’ll feel guiltfree when you sit down to a post-race Irish stew and stout.

3 Dance an Irish Jig

with Your Sweetheart

Irish music gets the heart going, and there is nothing like seeing (and hearing) it live. Grab your dancing partner and head to a live show. Ring your local pubs and ask about any traditional tunes they have lined up.

by Amy Levin-Epstein

4 Give to a Green Cause Concern Worldwide is one of the largest international

charities based in Ireland. Go to ConcernGifts.org and donate for people in need worldwide. If you’d like to add another cookbook to your growing collection, buy Zest!, which features dozens of Irish chefs’ best dishes, with proceeds going to hospice care.

5 Perk Up Your Irish Coffee Skills

If you’re not a green beer girl, Irish coffee makes a tasty and festive cocktail. Try this recipe for Irish Coffee. The recipe has a healthy amount of Irish whiskey to keep you toasty, so savor it slowly and realize you can toast the holiday without getting one drop of green beer spilled on your shirt.

TRADITIONAL IRISH COFFEE

Place 2 ounces Irish whiskey and 1 tablespoon sugar in a warm coffee mug. Stir the mixture until the sugar is dissolved. Pour hot coffee into the mug and layer a dollop of soft whipped cream on top. You can then adjust the amount of sugar to your liking. (To make soft whipped cream yourself, take heavy cream and whip it just until it thickens, not until it forms peaks.)

Introducing FLAIR’S NEWEST Intern...

E L L E N DANFORD ELLEN DANFORD

For as long as I can remember, I have loved writing. When I was five, I could often be found making up stories. Nothing was beyond the scope of my imagination, and my parents encouraged me to be creative. One day, my mom found an old electric typewriter in the attic and set it up for me. Soon thereafter, the Daddy Daily was born. Every day before my dad got home from work, I wrote a home “newspaper” with jokes, weather, and a story from the day. It was during these summer days I fell in love with writing. I went to elementary school in Lexington, Kentucky, and viewed myself as a language arts person. Writing came easily to me throughout all of elementary school, and I was rarely critiqued. This created the illusion that my writing didn’t need to be changed. In my mind, first drafts were also final drafts. Towards the beginning of my fifth-grade year, my mom suggested that my dad edit the assignments I was writing for school. Originally, I was excited to work with my dad. I soon realized, however, that the job of an editor is not to love what is written but to change it. He began reading my work, and when the adulation I expected did not come, I was indignant. I watched my dad scan the pages and make comments. The yellow highlighter began to swim before my eyes, suggestions taking over more and more of my writing. Though my mom hated to hear us fight, she continued to encourage me to let my dad edit my work. If not for my parents wisely pushing me to continue, I may have given up writing altogether. I cannot identify when my mindset shifted, but one day as my father added suggestions to my writing, I began to pay attention. I started to listen and agree with the changes he suggested. Change didn’t come immediately, but I slowly grew more receptive to his wisdom. This led to the realization that good feedback is essential to growth. This revelation settled, and I grew to understand what my dad had been doing for me all those years. He wasn’t trying to hurt my fragile writer’s ego but rather improve my writing I learned to love English, the process of writing, and changing the written word. This helped me through the fear of being inadequate and the frustration of editing. Without this initially negative (but constructive) experience, I would not be an English major today. I want to share the gift my dad imparted in me with others. Through this WKU internship at FLAIR magazine, I will achieve a familiarity with my first publishing company. Publishing, especially editing, is a hard world to break into. As a fresh face in the industry, I worry about being able to distinguish myself. Overall, I hope this internship will better my resume, bolster my ability to work, and increase my value in the job market.
