Welcome to the 2010 Cortona Sessions for New Music!

We are so pleased to have the opportunity to come together for ten days of creation and performance in this beautiful setting. Cortona is a magical place which should provide wonderful inspiration for all of us in our continued pursuit of art and beauty. From the radiant glows of Tuscan sunflowers, to the inimitable sounds of Cortona’s bells, to the magic of Tuscany’s food and wine, to the simple joy of passagiata, we hope that all of you are able to absorb some of this dolce vita, and that your experience here not only influences your art, but your entire way of life.

About the Cortona Sessions 2010 marks the inaugural year for the Cortona Sessions for New Music. Founded by the members of DuoSolo, Mary Fukushima and Michael Kirkendoll, and produced under the auspices of the DuoSolo Foundation, the Cortona Sessions offers flutists, pianists, and composers the opportunity to collaborate in ten days of world-premiere performances and contemporary music study. The Cortona Sessions take place in the charming Hotel Oasi Neumann, a converted 13th Century monastery, just below the magical village of Cortona; one of Tuscany’s most endearing hill towns.

During the festival, participants will attend lectures and discussions, perform in masterclasses and recitals, as well as study in private lessons with the Cortona Sessions renowned faculty. There is also the opportunity to visit the Tuscan capital of Florence and embark on a day-long Tuscan wine tour. Composers will compete in the first Iron Composer Competition (a musical version of the Iron Chef challenges), writing short works and having them realized in performance within hours.

Through the Cortona Sessions, we hope to foster lasting relationships between performers and composers, and encourage the participants to further creation and performance of new music. We believe strongly in contemporary music’s power to relate to the world we live in, and hope the Cortona Sessions will instill this belief in everyone involved.

Cortona Sessions Faculty Mary Fukushima | flute A flutist for the twenty-first century, Mary Fukushima has established herself as a leading performer of contemporary music. Her 2006 Carnegie Hall Debut was praised as a “powerhouse performance” by critics from New York Concert Review, and led to performances in Italy, Singapore, and return engagements in New York. Her devotion to expanding the flute repertoire has resulted in over a dozen world premiere performances in the past three years, including several works by Pulitzer-Prize nominated composer David Rakowski. This devotion has also led Mary to compose a collection of études on contemporary techniques. In 2008, Mary and her duo partner Michael Kirkendoll formed the DuoSolo Foundation, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the creation and performance of new music. In 2010, DuoSolo will present the first Cortona Sessions for New Music in Cortona, Italy, bringing performers and composers together for 10 days of performance, study, and collaboration.

While devoted to the music of living composers, Mary is equally at home in the classical flute repertoire and has been a featured soloist with numerous orchestras, including a performance of Mozart’s D Major Concerto, K. 314 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In addition to her solo career, Mary has also performed with a number of New York ensembles including the Manhattan Sinfonietta, Gotham City Orchestra, and with the Los Angeles Master Chorale in the New York premiere of Steve Reich’s You Are Variations in Alice Tully Hall. She has also performed with the Kansas City and Tulsa Symphonies.

A passionate educator, Mary has created an interactive class on contemporary flute techniques, designed to introduce new techniques to students of all levels. The class has been presented to elementary and junior high students in Kansas as well as to students at major universities around the U.S. She is currently co-founder and director of the Kansas and Stillwater Summer Flute Festival for junior high and high school students, and previously founded and directed the Maui World Music Workshop (HI) and Brooklyn Band Academy (NY).

Mary is currently Lecturer of Flute at Pittsburg State University (KS). She holds degrees from the University of Kansas (DMA), Manhattan School of Music (MM), and Long Island University (BFA). Her major teachers include David Fedele, Linda Chesis, Bradley Garner, Sheridon Stokes, and David Shostac. Mary enjoys running trails with her dogs (Kona and Sam), sharing Italian wine with her husband, and golfing, snowboarding, and surfing whenever she gets a chance!

Michael Kirkendoll | piano Bridging the gaps between old and new, Michael Kirkendoll is a not your everyday pianist. Equally at home in the worlds of Beethoven and Haydn as in those of Frederic Rzewski and John Cage, Michaelʼs concerts are unique musical experiences leaving audiences eager for the next performance. His performances in the U.S., Europe, and Southeast Asia have garnered great praise by audiences and critics alike. Michaelʼs recent appearances as a finalist in the American Pianists Association Classical Fellowship Awards were lauded as “inspired” showcasing “extraordinary” technical gifts and “superior intelligence.” His performance of John Coriglianoʼs Piano Concerto with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra “dazzled from the moment he sat down at the keyboard” and his collaboration with the Parker String Quartet in the Shostakovich Piano Quintet “had you hanging on every phrase.” Michaelʼs 1999 tour of Franceʼs Loire Valley featuring music by Chopin, Beethoven, and Ravel was heralded as “astonishing, regal, and eloquent” (La République, Orléans). Similar praise came after Michael substituted on 36 hours notice for a performance of Beethovenʼs Fourth Piano Concerto in Merkin Hall, New York City.

In recent years, Michael has become a dedicated advocate for the music of the 20th and 21st centuries. His talents for this music extend far beyond the typical pianistic arsenal of octaves and arpeggios. Michael possesses a deep and powerful voice and a lack of inhibition allowing him to perform with great skill some of the 20th-21st centuries most avant-garde works for theatrical pianist, including Frederic Rzewskiʼs De Profundis and Jerome Kitzkeʼs Sunflower Sutra. Michaelʼs work with Frederic Rzewski led to the 2007 premiere of the Nanosonatas, Book 1. Since 2006, Michael has premiered dozens of new works as either a soloist or collaborator. In addition to the music of Rzewski and Kitzke, his programs feature a diverse range of contemporary styles, with music by such composers as David Rakowski, Charles Ives, Bruno Mantovani, Jacob Ter Veldhuis, Olivier Messiaen, and David Lang.

Michaelʼs programming philosophy is to create concert experiences filled with emotional hills and valleys of laughter, nervousness, and passion, keeping both himself and his audiences connected and involved throughout the program. With a repertoire spanning the centuries, Michael is dedicated to educating and finding new audiences, wherever he goes. Seeking out interesting venues from museums to jazz clubs and lecture halls, he always introduces his music in an informed and personal way, making concerts a shared experience for both performer and listener.

Michael is currently Assistant Professor of Piano at Oklahoma State University. He has earned degrees from the University of Kansas (DMA, BM) and the Manhattan School of Music (MM). When not at the piano, Michael can be found enjoying fine wine, cooking, golfing, or playing with his dogs, Sam and Kona. Gabriela Lena Frank | composition Identity has always been at the center of Gabriela Lena Frank's music. Born in Berkeley, California, to a mother of mixed Peruvian/Chinese ancestry and a father of Lithuanian/Jewish descent, Frank explores her multicultural heritage most ardently through her compositions. Inspired by the works of Bela Bartók and Alberto Ginastera, Frank is something of a musical anthropologist. She has traveled extensively throughout South America and her pieces reflect and refract her studies of Latin-American folklore, incorporating poetry, mythology, and native musical styles into a western classical framework that is uniquely her own. She writes challenging idiomatic parts for solo instrumentalists, vocalists, chamber ensembles, and orchestras.

Moreover, she writes, "There's usually a story line behind my music; a scenario or character." While the enjoyment of her works can be obtained solely from her music, the composer's program notes enhance the listener's experience, for they describe how a piano part mimics a marimba or pan-pipes, or how a movement is based on a particular type of folk song, where the singer is mockingly crying. Even a brief glance at her titles evokes specific imagery: Leyendas: An Andean Walkabout; Cuatro Canciones Andinas; and Ríos Profundos. Frank's compositions also reflect her virtuosity as a pianist when not composing, she is a sought-after performer, specializing in contemporary repertoire.

Recent premieres include New Andean Songs for the Los Angeles Philharmonic's Green Umbrella new music series; Inca Dance for guitarist Manuel Barrueco and the Cuarteto Latinoamericano; Peregrinos for the Indianapolis Symphony; and additional works for guitarist Sharon Isbin, the Chiara Quartet, the Concertante sextet, American Portraits for the Modesto Symphony, and Two Mountain Songs for a consortium comprising of the Young People's Chorus of New York, the San Francisco Girl's Choir, and the Glen Ellyn Children's Choir.

Having collaborated with a broad range of artists, Frank's other works include Quijotadas (2007) by the Brentano String Quartet; Jalapeño Blues (2006) for Chanticleer based on the Spanglish poetry of renowned Chicano poet Trinidad Sánchez; Compadrazgo (2007), a double concerto for David Finckel and Wu Han with the ProMusica Orchestra; La Llorona: Tone Poem for Viola and Orchestra (2007) for the Houston Symphony with principal Wayne Brooks under the baton of Hans Graf; Dos Canciones de Cifar (2007) for baritone and piano commissioned by the Marilyn Horne Foundation with Carnegie Hall; Ritmos Anchinos (2006) for the Silk Road Project; Cinco Danzas de Chambi (2006) for viola and piano commissioned by the Aspen Summer Music Festival; Canto de Harawi (2006) for the Da Camera Society of Houston; Manchay Tiempo (2005) for the Seattle Symphony under the baton of Jun Märkl; Inkarrí (2005) for the Kronos Quartet; Illapa: Tone Poem for Flute and Orchestra (2004) for flautist Leone Buyse and the Shepherd Symphony Orchestra; and Three Latin-American Dances (2004) for the Utah Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Keith Lockhart.

Frank attended Rice University in Houston, Texas, where she earned both a BA (1994) and MA (1996). She studied composition with Paul Cooper, Ellsworth Milburn, and Sam Jones, and piano with Jeanne Kierman Fischer. Frank credits Fischer with introducing her to the music of Ginastera, Bartók, and other composers who utilized folk elements in their work. At the University of Michigan, from which she received a DMA in composition in 2001, Frank studied composition with William Albright, William Bolcom, Leslie Bassett, and Michael Daugherty, and piano with Logan Skelton.

Forrest Pierce | composition Forrest Pierce composes genre-defying music steeped in Sufi mysticism and contemporary virtuosity. Sincere, often triadic, and blatantly tuneful, it draws on both non-western and rock-era traditions to depict an authentic world of sacred unity and natural beauty. His works have been performed in sacred and concert settings around the world, on noteworthy concert series and by diverse ensembles such as Brave New Works, the Chamber Players of the Society of New Music/ISCM, the BMOP chamber series, DuoSolo, the Chamber Orchestras of Portland and Kansas City, the Indianapolis and Walla Walla Symphonies, the Concord Ensemble, the Seattle New Music Ensemble, the Oregon and Northwest Repertory Singers, the Boston Choral Ensemble, the Dublin and Canadian International Organ Competitions, Songfest, and by numerous distinguished soloists in North America and abroad. Pierce is the past resident composer of the Seattle New Music Ensemble and the founding artistic director of Portland's Friends of Rain Contemporary Ensemble. His catalog is led by over 50 works for voices, including operatic, choral, and solo vocal forces.

Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Forrest Pierce was raised in the empty Columbia Plateau region of eastern Washington State, the grandson of Dust Bowl emigrants. A pianist and cellist in his youth, Pierce began composing at an early age. In the days before the Internet, contemporary art music was hard to come by in the small towns of the West, so it was on a steady stream of top-40 radio, record-store punk, new wave, and common-practice music from the local NPR station that Pierceʼs compositional voice developed. Pierceʼs private piano teacher was, by some lucky stroke, an expatriate New Yorker with a taste for Bartók and Schoenberg, and her exhortations for creativity over convention resulted in Pierceʼs experimental 10-year old work being disqualified from a local competition due to its use of gestural notation and lack of barlines. Pierce attended the University of Puget Sound, where he avoided practicing for four years, sinking all available time into composing, roaming beaches and mountains, and reading the classics of world religion. He graduated from the Honors Program in the Classics in 1994 summa cum laude, having won a Watson Fellowship to study the traditional music of Madagascar.

A Doctorate at Indiana University, where he was awarded the Deanʼs Prize, completed Pierceʼs formal training, with the help of teacher Don Freund. Since that time, Pierce has enjoyed teaching positions at the University of Texas-Austin, at Lewis & Clark College, and at Kansas University.

In recent years, Pierceʼs textural conception has become primarily heterophonic, largely derived from Rock root-position progression and florid Qawwali music. Likewise, his rhythmic language has become an alternation and collision between freely improvisatory meditative landscapes and consistently pulsed motoric dance rhythms.

Major recent works include: The All-Night Vigil of Rabiʼa al-Adawiyya, an oratorio for womensʼ chorus with amplified cello on the poetry of the Sufi saint of the same name; Picnic, an opera in three acts based on the play by William Inge; The Twelve Kisses, a symphony for coloratura and chamber orchestra; Need-Fire, an hour-long saga for soprano and piano; and Faces of Sorrow, a meta-sonata of mystery sonatas written for organist Michael Bauer.

Flute Extended Techniques Class

This class is intended for both composers and performers as a demonstration and description of the

multitude of contemporary techniques in the modern flute repertoire. Included will be a no-nonsense

description of how and why each technique works, proper notation, and execution.

Composition Symposiums

The composition symposiums are open to all participants and will be focused discussions on matters

pertaining to contemporary composition. Included will be specific study of works by participants,

experiential discussions, compositional technique, and aspects relating to the business of composing.

Yoga with Mary

Mary Fukushima will lead an optional yoga practice every morning in the garden.

Iron Composer Competition Inspired by the television culinary competition Iron Chef, the first Cortona Sessions Iron Composer Competition will be held on Monday, June 28. Beginning at 2pm, each composer will be given a topic on which they will have 1 hour to composer a one-minute piece for solo flute. Each flutist in attendance will then learn the completed works in 1.5 hours and perform them. Four works will be chosen anonymously as semi-finalists. The semi-finalists will then receive a new topic and have 30 minutes to compose a second one-minute work, also for solo flute. Flutists will have 30 minutes to learn and perform these works which will also be judged anonymously. Two finalists will be chosen, and each will have 30 minutes to compose a one-minute work for solo piano. These will be learned over the course of the next 30 minutes and performed. The winning composer will receive a small prize and immense bragging rights!

Excursions Florence All Cortona Sessions faculty and participants will receive a round-trip train ticket to Florence for a day-trip on Thursday, June 24. Everyone is on their own to explore this magical city.

Tuscan Wine Tour Interested participants can join Michael and Mary on a Tuscan Wine Tour where they will enjoy some of the finest wines in all of Italy. Traveling by coach, we will first visit Montalcino and the prestigious winery of Casse Basse di Soldera for a tour of the cellars and gardens, as well as a barrel tasting of their famous Brunello di Montalcino. We will then visit Terralsole Winery for an extended tour including tastings of their Brunello and a Tuscan lunch.

Following the winery visits, the coach will take everyone to the charming hill town of Montepulciano to enjoy passagiata and take in the beauty of this Tuscan marvel, which is also the home for the delicious Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.

Cortona Sessions Participants Stephen BACHICHA | composition Stephen Bachicha was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1980.

He attended high school in Eden Prairie, Minnesota and graduated in 1998. Stephen received his Bachelors degree from the Setnor School of Music at Syracuse University studying composition with Nicolas Scherzinger. He also studied with Daniel Godfrey and Liu Zhang. Upon graduating, Stephen moved to Boston, Massachussetts. He worked for the Boston Symphony Orchestra for three years. Stephen then moved to Las Vegas to continue his studies at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. He received his Master's degree in December of 2008. While attending UNLV, Stephen studied composition with Virko Baley and Jorge Villavicencio-Grossmann and conducting with Taras Krysa and Tad Suzuki. Stephen also studied with James Mobberly, Chen Yi, and Zhou Long at the Conservatory of Music and Dance at the University of Missouri, Kansas City.

After receiving a Bachelor’s degree in Latin American Studies at Occidental College, Mr. Barabba studied music composition at the University of Chicago, University of California at Irvine, and UCLA. His composition teachers have included Andrew Imbrie, John Eaton, David Lefkowitz, Richard Grayson, Christopher Dobrian and Alan Terricciano. He lives and works in Los Angeles.

Recordings of Barabba’s music have been commercially released on the Yarlung Records, MMC Recordings and Navona Records labels.

Elizabeth Kennedy BAYER | composition

Stephen has received many commissions for his new music and has been privileged to have his music performed by such wonderful performers as: Julianne Sabol, Greg Wood, Andrew Smith, Megan Lanz, Alissa Fleming, Heidi Booth, Thomas Kmiecik, Rik Noyce and Gina Bombola. He has also had choral works performed by the Eden Prairie High School Concert Choir and the UNLV Chamber Chorale.

He has attended the SoundSCAPE international music festival in Pavia, Italy.

Currently, Stephen is pursing his doctoral studies at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University.

Elizabeth Kennedy Bayer writes for voice, choir, small chamber ensembles, medium chamber ensembles, jazz band, orchestra, string quartet, percussion ensembles… and the like. She writes most of her own text and draws much of her inspiration from poetry, dreams and indie pop song lyrics. She has a Masters of Music Theory and Composition from Arizona State University and a Bachelors of Music Composition from Baylor University.

Elizabeth has studied voice with Dr. Robert Best (Baylor University), flute with Helen Ann Shanley (Baylor University), and composition with Scott McAllister (Baylor University), Roshanne Etezady (ASU), Rodney Rogers (ASU) and Glen Hackbarth (ASU). Her music has been performed across the United States and is currently being performed in Cortona and Pavia, Italy.

Jason BARABBA | composition

Patrick BROWN | composition/piano

Composer Jason V. Barabba’s participation in this event is supported [in part] through Subito, the quick advancement grant program of the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of the American Composers Forum. His work has been called “deeply meditative” by Fanfare magazine and has been performed by such diverse musicians as the Janaki String Trio, clarinetist Richard Stoltzman, the California E.A.R. Unit and Chicago’s Quintet Attacca, in addition to academic institutions across the country. His chamber orchestra work The Abandonment of Pluto was premiered in England at the University of Bristol in 2008 and his String Trio was broadcast on WNYC radio in New York in 2009.

Mr. Barabba has frequently drawn on his love of literature for inspiration. His opera `dentity Crisis, based on the play by Christopher Durang, was called an “astounding work of the highest artistry” by fellow composer Bernard Gilmore. He has created several works using texts by author Ursula K. Le Guin, including Say I Am Not Far Enough, and “The Scarcity of Rhinos” on the television which set poems from her book Sixty Odd. His Three Meditations for Clarinet and Piano draws inspiration from her version of the Tao Te Ching. Le Guin has said of Mr. Barabba’s work, “Some composers use words as raw material. Like Schubert or Vaughan-Williams, he collaborates

Patrick Brown recieved a Bachelor of Music in Composition cum laude in 2004 from Southwest Missouri State University and Masters in 2007 from Missouri State University under John Prescott and Michael Murray. While in Springfield, MO, he worked closely with the Springfield Symphony Orchestra orchestrating children's compositions for their Annual Youth Concert Series from 2000-2007. Patrick studied piano with Peter Collins, Shun-Lin Chou, Ciann-Yi Liao, and Wei-Han Su at SMSU and MSU.

Patrick has taught private lessons in voice and piano at Pellegrino's School of Music as well as college theory, world music, and performance media for Ozarks Technical Community College and Missouri State University and the University of Kansas. Currently, several of his works are being published by Indie Classical. Patrick is working towards his Doctorate of Musical Arts in Composition at KU with James Barnes, Forrest Pierece, and Kip Haaheim. He makes his home in Lawrence, KS with his wife April and two year old son Keelan.

participants, cont’d Breanna ELLISON | piano Breanna Ellison began her music studies at the age of seven, learning piano from a local teacher. She soon expanded her musical abilities by also taking up the violin at the age of eight, later switching to viola. At last, at the age of nine, she began her studies on French horn with Renetta Dawson. Ellison went on to win principle horn at KMEA in 2009 and now studies French horn performance at the University of Kansas under the tutelage of Paul Stevens.

In addition to her French horn endeavors, Ellison is also a piano major at the University of Kansas, studying with Jack Winerock.

In 2007, she received honorable mention at the FHSU piano competition. In summer of 2008, Ellison was accepted to the New England Conservatory Piano Institute, focusing on works of Frédéric Chopin. In addition to being a freelance accompanist, you may also find her busking with accordion on the streets of Lawrence.

Gilbert GALINDO | composition A native of west Texas, Gilbert Galindo’s music has been heard at diverse venues such as The Green Mill in Chicago, Cornelia Street Café in New York, The Hideout, Symphony Space, among others, as well as across Europe in France, Germany, and Scotland. Galindo’s music has also been featured on programs at the American Composers Alliance Festival of American Music, the Brevard Music Festival, the Etchings Festival of Contemporary Music, Make Music New York, and the Sonic Fusion Festival. He has also been commissioned by the Chicago Fine Arts Society, Duo Petrarca, and the Lone Star Brass with additional premieres and performances from the East Coast Contemporary Ensemble, ai ensemble, Bard Institute Orchestra, Dal Niente, the Midland Odessa Symphony, Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra as well as pianist Mabel Kwan, clarinetist Thomas Piercy, and tenor Ulises Solano. Later this year, Gilbert will have several new works premiered the ai ensemble, Chicago Violinist Austin Wulliman, and bassoonist Maria Wildhaber. Gilbert is also co-founder of NYsoundCircuit, a multimedia salon music and art series based in New York.

Anne GUZZO | composition

Composer Anne M. Guzzo’s music was recently heard at the American Composers’ Forum New Music Salon in Minneapolis, Minnesota and at the Art Point festival near Frankfurt Germany.

Her music has also been heard at the International Cello Festival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and the Oregon Bach Festival Composers’ Symposium (OBFCS) performed by New York new music ensemble, Fireworks, and her works have been played by the Adzel Duo, the San Francisco Bay Area group, the Empyrean Ensemble; trombonist John Kenny; Boulder, Colorado’s Telling Stories; UnStaged Orchestra in Denver, Colorado; Third Angle Ensemble from Portland, Oregon; and the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra in Wyoming. Guzzo performs with and composes for the new music quartet, SPaNK along with soprano, Maureen Sorensson, flutist Nicole Riner, and pianist, Theresa Bogard.

Guzzo teaches theory and composition at the University of Wyoming and is the director of New Frontiers, a yearly festival of new music at UW. She earned her Ph.D. in theory-composition from the University of California, Davis, where she studied with Ross Bauer and Pablo Ortiz, and she holds a Master of Arts degree in 20th Century music from the University of California, Santa Cruz and Bachelor’s in Clarinet Performance from the University of New Mexico.

Leo HURLEY | composition Leo Hurley, 20, a senior at the University of the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA has gained recognition with commissions and performances in California at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, in Venice at the La Biennale Festival with Alonzo King's Lines Ballet, at Maya Angelou's 80th Birthday Celebration, at the North Carolina State Senate, by Grammy Award winner Pharoah Sanders, and the Winston-Salem Symphony. Leo is getting ready for a performance of a new work with choreographer Kate Jablonski and her Beyond Words Dance Company at A New World’s Theater in Manhattan later this summer. This year he won the Winston-Salem Symphony composition competition having his work for orchestra, Mirror, Mirror Overture, performed. This is the second time he has won this competition; the first time being back in 2008 with Echoes of Red. In 2009 he was awarded the ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer's Award for Zydeco, a saxophone quartet. He is currently working on commissions with the Winston-Salem Youth Orchestra and with choreographers Hernan Justo and the Carolina Ballet Theater, UNCSA Alumna Emery LeCrone, and Jamie Parrish. Leo has participated in masterclasses with Frank Tichelli, David Maslanka, and Frank Wildhorn. Laura MARSH | flute Laura holds two degrees from the University of Kansas in flute performance. At the school she held the position of principal flute in both the orchestra and wind ensemble from 2006-2009.

Other ensembles she participated in were the Helianthus Contemporary Ensemble, Alternative Energy Wind Quintet, and Jazz I Ensemble. She performed as a Collage Concert soloist in addition to performing a solo concerto with the KU Camerata. In her free time Laura enjoys taking her dog Bruce to the park and playing ultimate frisbee.

Nicholas OMICCIOLI | composition Nicholas S. Omiccioli (b. 1982) has received degrees from Heidelberg University and the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

He is the assistant director of Musica Nova at UMKC under the direction of Zhou Long and the Composers in the Schools (CITS) coordinator. Mr. Omiccioli currently studies composition with James Mobberley and Chen Yi and has received many awards including a commission for the 2010 Wellesley Composers' Conference, winner and judge's choice in the 2007, 2008, and

In addition to composition, Mr. Omiccioli studies guitar with Douglas Niedt and teaches at the UMKC Academy of Music and Dance and Kansas City School of Music.

Marcílio ONOFRE | composition Born on February 7, 1982, in João Pessoa - Brazil, Marcilio Onofre is a composer, pianist and researcher. He graduated in piano from the Federal University of Paraíba - UFPB and obtained his Masters in Composition at the same institution under the guidance of composer Eli-Eri Moura. Presently, he works at the UFPB Department of Music as a lecturer at the Music Graduate Program. He is also coordinator of the Laboratory of Musical Composition - COMPOMUS/UFPB, an institution that develops several projects related to the composition and dissemination of contemporary Brazilian music.

His musical production includes pieces for solo instruments, chamber ensembles, orchestras, and also incidental music for the theater. His work has been performed in various festivals like the XVI Biennial of Contemporary Brazilian Music (Rio de Janeiro, 2005) and Biennale of Contemporary Music in Mato Grosso (2006, 2008). His work Prelude VII won the First Prize in the 2010 DuoSolo Emerging Composer Competition contest in the US. In 2006 he received honorable mention at the 7th Concorso Internazionale di Strumenti per Composizione Soloist in Italy. In that same year, he was finalist at the ICC International Composition Competition "PIANO 2006" in Tokyo.

He participated as a Fellow at the International Winter Festival of Campos do Jordão (Sao Paulo - Brazil) in the following years: 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2010, on which occasion he had the opportunity to take lessons from Almeida Prado, Jocy de Oliveira, Stefano Gervasoni and Claude Ledoux. In 2009, he took part in a workshop on computer-assisted composition which was promoted by the New Music Festival (São Paulo - Brazil) in partnership with the Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique - IRCAM and the international workshop on trumpet and percussion techniques for composers sponsored by the Goethe Institut in city of Córdoba (Argentina) with Heinhold Friederich and Robyn Schulkowsky. He has just been awarded the First Prize at the 6th SCCM New Composition (China).

Julie PENNER | flute

Julie Penner is currently a sophomore, Music Education Major at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas. In 2010 she received the Outstanding Woodwind Student award at Pittsburg State and currently receives a Presidential Honors College Scholarship. In March of 2010 she performed as a guest soloist

with the Pittsburg State University Choir at the Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin, Ireland. Julie is currently the principal flutist in the Pittsburg State Chamber Winds and the Southeast Kansas Symphony Orchestra. She has performed in masterclasses with David Fedele and Dr. Mary Posses. She has studied flute with Dr. James Hall and is currently studying with Dr. Mary Fukushima.

Christopher PROSSER | composition Christopher Prosser (b. 1978, San Francisco, CA) is a composer and aspiring conductor of contemporary music. His output is diverse and includes works for orchestra, the theater, various chamber ensembles, chorus, art songs and solo pieces. His music has been featured in a variety of venues which include the Oregon Vanguard Series, the Oregon Bach Festival Composer’s Symposium, Portland State University’s Theater Arts program, the Brevard Music Center, and NACUSA. Christopher’s music has been performed by the ITCH Ensemble, the Eugene Contemporary Chamber Ensemble, the Sospiro New Music Vocal Ensemble, the University of Oregon Women’s Choir, the Oregon Bach Festival’s American Creators Ensemble, the Louisiana Sinfonietta, and the LSU Men’s Choir. He has participated in readings with NYC’s Fireworks Ensemble and Beta Collide. Recently, his piece Suite for Solo Flute, was selected as a finalist in the DuoSolo Emerging Composers Competition and will receive its European premiere at the Cortona Sessions for New Music in Cortona, Italy. Christopher is currently pursing a Master’s of Music degree from the University of Oregon where he studied composition under composers David Crumb and Robert Kyr. He holds a B. Mus from Louisiana State University (2007), where he studied with Dinos Constantinides, Stephen David Beck, and Liduino Pitombiera.

He has also studied with composers Robert Livingston Aldridge and Donald Freund at the Brevard Summer Music Festival (2006, 2007), and participated in master classes with composers Frank Ticheli, Steven Stuckey, Mark Applebaum, Jennifer Higdon, Sven-David Sandstrom, Roberto Sierra, James Mobberley, conductor Hirvo Surva, and vocalist Lucy Shelton. Currently, he is the director of the Sospiro New Music Vocal Ensemble at the University of Oregon.

Jessica RUDMAN | composition Connecticut-based composer Jessica Rudman has written music for the concert hall, dance, and film, which has been performed across the United States and abroad. She has participated in festivals such as the Wintergreen Summer Music Festival, the Electro-Acoustic Juke Joint, the European American Musical Alliance, Nevada Encounters of New Music, and the Bard Conductor’s Institute. Recent honors include winning first prize in the Con/un/drum Percussion Competition, being selected for the 2008 Omaha Symphony New Music Symposium, receiving a WELFund Grant from the University of Hartford, and presenting at the New England Conference of Music Theorists, the West Coast Conference of Music Theory and Analysis, and the SCI Region V conference.

Julia SNELL | flute Flutist Julia Snell is a junior Flute Performance major at the University of Kansas where she studies with David Fedele. She has performed with multiple ensembles including the KU Wind Ensemble, the KU Symphony Orchestra, the KU Flute Choir and the Helianthus Contemporary Ensemble under the direction of Forrest Pierce. Ms. Snell has appeared as soloist with the Salina Symphony as the winner of the 2007 Salina Symphony Young Artist Concerto Competition. In 2008, she was the Kansas state woodwind division winner of the Music Teacher’s National Association Competition. Ms. Snell was invited to perform at the 2008 Julius Baker Masterclass in Durham, Connecticut. She has performed in the masterclasses of Mary Karen Clardy, Brad Garner, Susan Hoeppner and Trudy Kane. Ms. Snell performed with the KU Flute Choir at the 2008 National Flute Association convention in Kansas City, MO, premiering three newly commissioned works written for the group. In 2008, she recorded Wild Nights! with the KU Wind Ensemble on the Naxos recording label. Ms. Snell is a recipient of the Melvin H. Geist Memorial Scholarship and the White Music Scholarship and is the Vice President of the KU Chapter of the Mu Phi Epsilon Music Fraternity. Ms. Snell is a native of McPherson, KS.

Hainu TAN | composition

Tan Hainu, winner of the ICA/SF 2009 International Composition Competition, the 2009 Earplay Donald Aird Memorial International Composers Competition, the SCI/ ASCAP 2010 Student Commission Competition region I, and the 23rd Annual CSU statewide research competition, graduate student of the New England Conservatory of Music (NEC) in Boston, is an accomplished and innovative composer, performer, educator, and cultural emissary whose works and charm have drawn respect and attention across continents: her master compositions have already been performed in China, Europe and throughout the United States. She obtained her BA in music composition at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and has taught at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and California State University, Los Angeles. Tan Hainu was a composition fellow in many excellent international music festivals and conferences such as Accent10, BIMF, CSM, CSNM (Italy), FUBiS (Germany), ICA/SF, NACUSA, N.E.O.N., and SCI. In the summer of 2006, 2008, 2009, and 2010, Tan Hainu was privileged to have studied at the Bowdoin International Music Festival and the Freie Universität Berlin under Professor Samuel Adler of The Juilliard School. She is affiliated with the American Composers Forum, American

Music Center, the Society of Composers Inc., and the National Association of Composers/USA.

Sophia TEGART | flute Sophia Tegart, flute, is an active soloist, chamber and orchestral musician, and teacher in the Kansas-City area.

Recently, she advanced to participate in the National Flute Association Young Artist Competition, as well as the Ladies Musical Club of Seattle Competition. She placed second in the collegiate woodwind division, and third in the collegiate chamber music division of the Music Teachers National Association National Competition. As a soloist, Sophia has performed concertos with Spokane Symphony, Kansas City Civic Orchestra, Washington-Idaho Symphony, University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory Orchestra, and the Gonzaga Symphony Orchestra. She held positions with the Washington-Idaho and Walla Walla Symphonies, and most recently the Oregon Mozart Players.

She has acted as substitute flute in Spokane Symphony, Eugene Symphony, Northwest Bach Festival, and currently subs with Kansas City Symphony. Sophia holds a B.M. in performance and a B.A. in history from Washington State University, and an M.M. in performance and an M.A. in music history from the University of Oregon.

Currently, she is working on her D.M.A. in performance at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where she studies with Mary Posses. She has studied with Ann Marie Yasinitsky, Nancy Andrew, Louise Di Tullio, Bruce Bodden, and Molly Barth. Sophia has performed in master classes with Carol Wincenc, Jeffrey Khaner, Alexa Still, Mary Karen Clardy, Keith Underwood and Mathias Ziegler.

Jeanette WONG | composition Jeanette Wong is a classically trained composer with a wide range of musical influences. Her interest in multimedia has led to musical collaborations in film, dance, and theater in addition to her more traditional chamber works. She had works performed by the likes of CityWinds, the Del Sol String Quartet, the Brentano String Quartet and Earplay.

Jeanette was born and raised in San Francisco and began her musical studies in piano and flute performance. While attending the San Francisco School of the Arts, she was selected to participate in the American Composers Forum’s Composers in the Schools program. In 2001, Jeanette moved to New York to pursue a B.M. in Music Theory & Composition at New York University. Upon graduation, she was honored with the New Music Consortium’s Undergraduate Award.

Jeanette has also gained a great deal of experience in the world of arts administration. She has held positions at MTV Networks, Michael Stockler Productions, and the League of American Orchestras in addition to serving as a freelance consultant on various musical projects. Jeanette is currently the Education Programs Coordinator for the San Francisco Symphony.

To these ends, the DuoSolo Foundation has created and sponsored the DuoSolo Emerging Composer Competition and the Cortona Sessions for New Music. Upcoming DuoSolo Foundation projects include Music for Greensburg (a concert of new music benefiting the “green” rebuilding of Greensburg, Kansas which was devastated by an EF5 tornado in 2007), and the recording of DuoSolo’s debut CD featuring music premiered by DuoSolo.
