David Lee Cox
Services for David Lee Cox, 21, of San Manuel, were held Saturday, May 12, at the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in San Manuel. David passed away on May 7, 2012. He is survived by his parents, Brian and Jennifer Cox; sister, Crystal Jean; brother, Cade Thomas; grandmother, Jeane Simons Reed; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends, all of whom loved him very much.
June 15, 1942 - May 11, 2012 Robert M. Lopez, 69, passed away May 11, 2012 at his home in Mammoth, reuniting with his wife, Alice V. Lopez. He was born June 15, 1942 in Harshaw, Arizona. He leaves behind his seven children, Adam, Diana, Alice, Robert, Jesus, Angel and Freddie; 31 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Robert’s family and all who knew him will miss him dearly.

Letter to the Editor: Volunteers clean up graffiti Editor, San Manuel Miner: This letter is in response to the thank you note from John and LaNorma Raaum. I also want to thank the Raaum’s for their kind words featured in the Miner on May 2. It is satisfying to know that our work is appreciated. When I say we, I’m speaking of the collaboration between our organization, Adelante Juntos Coalition (AJC), John Ryan and the SMUSD Board of Education, CopperTown Association, SunLife Family Health Clinic, Elks Lodge, Pinal County Attorney and Sheriff’s Office, ASARCO, Cenpatico, Mountain Health and Wellness, Knights of Columbus, American Legion and Lions Clubs; but mostly our concerned citizens. Many area residents still don’t fully understand AJC’s mission which is: “To mobilize communities to prevent substance abuse
among youth and provide education, information and resources that empower them to create safe, healthy, drug free communities.” We could never undertake this grand of a mission without the collaboration and cooperation of partners like these and the many private citizens who donate to keep our programming going. The key words in the mission are ‘mobilize communities’; when a problem or concern arises among our citizens, very often they call or come to our office. I have been fortunate enough to have worked with many great residents of the area during my tenure here at AJC and it is because of those partnerships that we are able to collaborate and resolve many of the problematic behavior and/or activities in our town. Indeed it was and continues to be AJC staff, program youth, volunteers
Mammoth Police Report The Mammoth Police Report is submitted by the department. According to state law, there are two methods by which police may arrest suspected offenders. The suspect may be physically taken into the department and booked into jail, or the arresting officer may write a citation and release the suspect to appear in court later. All suspects are

Any resident at any time can call our office to schedule graffiti clean up. In the graffiti case that you cited, MSMUSD Facilities and Maintenance Manager David Hogan notified AJC about the graffiti when he discovered it and as soon as I hung up the phone, project assistant Edna Boger took our ‘team’ on duty that day and they had the vandalism covered up within 30 minutes. This is the kind of cooperation and unity is what will help keep our community safe and a place that we are all proud to live in. The scope of our work here at AJC has grown tremendously to try to meet the needs of the people who call the Tri-Community home. Our move into the vacant Avenue B School will enable us to provide for more services to youth, families and our esteemed senior citizens. Of course our original and most important objective is to keep kids drug and alcohol free, but we will continue to do graffiti abatement (cover it

Letter to the Editor: Experiencing the Arizona State Republican Convention Editor, San Manuel Miner: On May 12, 2012 at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, the Arizona State Republican Convention was held. A month earlier I was elected as an Alternate Delegate at the Pinal County (Legislative District-23) Caucus. When the opportunity presented itself I was able to volunteer to work with the Credentialing Team for Pinal County at the State Republican Convention. As a part of the credentialing team under the Pinal County Chairman, I and another Ron Paul supporter was paired with two Romney supporters. It ended up that it was just me as the person who carpooled with me had to leave because of a family emergency. I woke up early the morning of the convention as I had to be at GCU at 6:45 a.m. for credentialing training. Going through the big double glass doors and meeting with the Pinal County Chairman and his wife inside. We eventually went in to the room off to the right for training. After the training and the packets for all of the delegates and alternates arrived we had to credential ourselves first. To get the box of credentials I had to show my state ID. Then the other two team
members and I went to the Pinal County Credentialing table outside. The procedure to checking credentials was that a delegate or alternate had to show a State ID/ Drivers license or a voter registration card. We were to double check the envelope that we handed them to make sure that the correct badge (white for Delegates and tan for Alternates) and that they only had one and the name was correct on the badge. When we got out at the table the Romney supporters started the process of credentialing. One of the problems with credentialing was that the leaf part of the envelope for the packets that folds over was not tucked inside the packets. Because of this the loose leafs encapsulated more that one packet making flipping through them difficult. Other than that everything went smoothly with credentialing. At the end of credentialing which I had the impression that it was to close at exactly 9 a.m. We were not too close until the Pinal County Chairman came out to officially announce that credentialing was closed. Some of the other County tables had already closed before this. At the end of credentialing Pinal County had 50 delegates and 13

alternates present at the convention. Some things to note as I worked the credentialing table is that were not allowed to wear or pass out any candidate or campaign specific swag or literature. This included shirts, sticker, buttons, literature like platform specific slates. As credentialing slowed down at the Pinal County table apparently one of the Romney supporters working with me was able to obtain their platform slate. This they said was their conservative slate. It was on orange paper that said “Platform Republican” at the top. At the bottom it read “Ron Paul supporters bring phony slates to Republican election meetings. This paper is the true and accurate Platform Republican slate.” I said OK and folded the paper up and put in my pocket. They apparently did not know I was a Ron Paul Supporter. Another thing that I noted while credentialing was the table next to us had a group of people congregating behind it. I was not sure that that was supposed to be happening as did the Romney supporters working with me. When I entered the doors again to the busy lobby I was immediately distracted

because I needed to find the restrooms and was stopped by a Romney supporter who was handing out yet another slate. This was on green paper and labelled at the top with “Official Unity Slate” and at the bottom “Paid for by Romney for President”. I was given a Romney sticker and told to wear it. Instead of wearing it I stuck it on the green slate and folded it up and placed it in my pocket with the orange slate. I knew that the alternates were above the floor where the delegates were seated but it took me a few moments of wondering around to find the sign that said “Alternates Only”. I was also supposed to find other Ron Paul supporters from my county who were alternates and sit with them. However I never could not find any. So I sat in the Alternate section by myself as the convention started with prayer and Pledge of Allegiance. I noticed the Pinal County Chairman’s wife on the delegate floor motioning for someone to come down. I was not sure if she was motioning for me or someone else to come down. When I looked behind me I noticed that the two Romney supporters I was working with at the credentialing table earlier were at the top of the stairs. So I got up and quickly followed them to where they were re-credentialing as delegates to be seated on the floor. The Supervisor District-Two Chairman was there and said he was looking for me. I managed to get re-
credentialed and seated as a delegate. The delegate floor was arranged by County. When I found my county I sat with many of the Ron Paul Supporters and was able to get the Ron Paul Slate and updates. The seating was a bit cramped. After the speeches and noise making it was time to divide up according to Congressional Districts and vote for “A” and “B” delegates. Because I am in CD1 we had to go upstairs to the right of the stage. When we got there was more cramped sitting arrangements with uncomfortable fold up chairs. We sat according to County within our Congregational District. Before we could get started in our CD caucus we were told we had to go back to the delegate floor because we were not supposed to leave until they adjourned the meeting. So as we got back down to the delegate floor and to our seats I noticed that to the left of the Pinal County seating was the CD8 caucus. They were apparently not told the same thing as we were. They were trying to block people from sitting in the delegate seating and getting to where they were supposed to be by pushing, shoving and taping the path off. They eventually figured out that they to were supposed to go back to their seating on the delegate floor like everyone else. Then after more speaking they finally officially adjourned the meeting and we went back to the Congregational District

caucuses to vote for “A” and “B” delegates. We first voted for the “A” delegate it was then someone pointed out that at the bottom of the ballot there was asterisk that said “endorsed by Romney” and certain people on the ballot had asterisks by their name which was coordinated by the green “Unity” slate. We were told we could vote for three people for the “A” and “B” delegates. However, our strategy was to vote for only one person to concentrate our vote. I voted for the Ron Paul candidate for the “A” delegate in Congressional District 1. Once the ballots were collected they were handed to the secretary, who was a Romney supporter (apparent by the sticker he was wearing). After waiting a while the results came back for the “A” delegate. The winner was declared as someone with just 15 votes. How could this be? We disputed this and it was asked how many voted only for the Ron Paul candidate in CD1. In response 40 to 50 people raised their hands. After this an investigation ensued and a Paul supporter was to accompany the secretary to the area below us where they were counting the vote. After a long time waiting it was determined that it was a ballot/programming error with the Diebold counting machines. The way the ballots work, it was explained, is that each name on the ballot has a numbered order associated with it. The Diebold machines count the number associated with the names on the ballots. It was discovered that a name that was supposed to be on the ballot was left off and this messed up the counting in the Diebold machines. From there on it was agreed that the Electronic count was to be followed by a hand counting of the ballots. After more waiting we finally got the results and it was confirmed that the Ron Paul candidate in CD1 won the “A” Delegate slot with well See Letter, Page 10

Mountain Vista School inducts 12 new members into National Junior Honor Society Twelve sixth and seventh grade students from Mountain Vista School in Oracle were inducted into membership of the National Junior Honor Society. The ceremony was held at the school on Tuesday, May 1, at 6:30 in the evening. The ceremony was attended by the new inductees, current NJHS members, parents, administrators and board members. The students conducted the ceremony. Paige Padilla, NJHS President, welcomed those in attendance. Latissia Garcia spoke to the new members about scholarship, Monique Navarro spoke about service, Marissa McRae spoke about leadership, Cody Bradley spoke about citizenship, and Jessica Vickery spoke about character. Emily Soulé led the new inductees in the NJHS pledge and the Mountain Vista Principal,
Mr. Dennis Blauser, conferred the certificates and welcomed the new members. The students inducted were Kayla Brown, Keefer Gagnon, Grethel Johnson, Jenna Martinez, Sam Muniz, Julia Tellez, Alexys Dietz, Angel Jennings, Gustavo Martinez, Kiera Myers, Matthew Peru, and Demi Nicholson. The new members were selected by a Faculty Council for meeting high standards of scholarship, service, leadership, citizenship, and character. Current members are Adriana Berumen, Barbara Bruno, Sammy Buckler, Breanna Chargualaf, Marissa McRae, Angela Navarro, Paige Padilla, Devan Parkhurst, McKenzie Vincent, Cody Bradley, Emily Soulé, Monique Navarro, Jessica Vickery, Latissia Garcia,

After the ceremony refreshments were served by the current NJHS members to the new members, their families, and friends. National Junior Honor Society members are chosen for and then expected to continue their exemplary contributions to the school and community. The Mountain Vista Middle School Chapter has been active since 2005. Mrs. Nannette Soulé is the NJHS sponsor. The National Junior Society ranks as one of the oldest and most prestigious national organizations for middle school students. Chapters exist in more than 60 percent of the nation’s

RC Track in San Manuel now open for racing so get your small motors running San Manuel and the Tri-Community have a new activity for all kids in the district and those adults who are kids at heart. All kids in the district will have free use of the track during normal track times. Loaner cars are also available for kids to use for a $3 donation for each battery pack to keep the loaners in good running condition. The Over the Top RC club officially opened the brand new track on Saturday. Vince Apuron, a club co-founder, said that the track in San Manuel is one of the largest ones open to the public. Regular track hours after the Grand Opening will be 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. while swim practice is going on. Saturday night is club meeting night and workshops are usually held at the track at 6 p.m., depending on how long the meeting last there may be time to run cars. Use of the track is available to all adult drivers for a minimal donation in the form of a car part for one of the car kits we are putting together for our Cars – 4 – Kids Program; a small cash donation works as well. Oracle Ridge Copper Project to be discussed during open house in Oracle The public is invited to learn about plans to resume operations at the Oracle Ridge Mine at upcoming open houses in Oracle and Summerhaven. Representatives from the mine will be available to introduce the planned project and answer
questions. Maps and displays will be available to help increase understanding of the project. The open house in Oracle will be held Wednesday, May 23, from 6-8 p.m. at the Oracle Community Center, 685 East American Avenue, Oracle.
The open house in Summerhaven will be held Thursday, May 24, from 6-8 p.m. at the Mt. Lemmon Community Center, 12949 North Sabino Canyon Parkway, Mt. Lemmon. The Oracle Ridge Mine is an inactive, small-scale underground copper mine
located on private property in the Santa Catalina Mountains. It is in the permitting and design detail stage for resuming operations using stateof-the-art best available demonstrated control technology. The proposed mine operation would
utilize as much as possible the same surface footprint as in previous operations. The existing reclaimed tailings facility, also located on private property, would be expanded to accommodate the current mine plan. As designed, the tailings facility would be a
state-of-the-art lined drystack facility. Before operations may resume, a number of environmental studies must be completed and permits obtained. More information is available at www. oracleridgecopper.com.
Numbers tell successful reopening of Oracle State Park By Mary Ann Pogany President, Friends of Oracle State Park The reopening this spring of Oracle State Park Center for Environmental Education, though limited to Saturdays only, was an unconditional success by all measures. During the 13 Saturdays of February, March, and April, more than 3,200 visitors of all ages enjoyed the park trails, vistas, ranch house, and scheduled activities; 513 school kids participated
in more than a dozen park environmental education programs; and $6,100 in revenue was collected including $1,200 in annual state park passes sold at the entrance gate. We expect to see the same or better numbers in the fall when the park reopens on Saturdays in September, October, and November. After being closed for more than two years due to the state budget crisis, the park reopened on February 4 with
a bang. A thousand people flocked through the gates, demonstrating the park’s importance to businesses in the local community, outdoor enthusiasts across the entire region, and area corporations. The celebration was the culmination of hard work and donated dollars. Friends of Oracle State Park, a non-profit organization, put on two big events, a golf outing at SaddleBrooke Ranch
and a Wine-Tasting and Cheese Party at the park. These events brought in nearly $6,000 to help offset the $10,500 which Friends provided to state parks as part of the $21,000 committed in a partnership agreement to get the park open. Throughout the three months, dozens of park volunteers gave thousands of hours putting together programs, presentations, and workshops; organizing
guided hikes and ranch house tours; taking classes to teach school programs; greeting visitors at the gatehouse, and putting together a spectacular line-up of Earth Day Saturday activities. On-site ranger, Jennifer Rinio, coordinated events while re-energizing school program participation. Friends of Oracle State Park is excited about these outstanding successes. It is gratifying that the hard work by all has paid off. With such
outstanding support, we have exceeded all expectations. There is no question that the public values our park. Now, we begin work on programs and fund-raising events for the fall season. Miner Track team competes at state level; Newman captures two firsts By Frank Smith The San Manuel Miner track team competed at the State Championships on May 11 and 12 in Phoenix, completing the season on a high note with Wayne Newman bringing home two individual state titles in the 110m High Hurdles and the 300m Intermediate Hurdles. Wayne blew away his competitors in both prelims and the finals. In the Boys competition,
the 4x400m relay finished in fourth place, only tenths of seconds separating third and fourth places. Results for the Miners: In the 110m Hurdles:finishing in firth place was Wayne Newman with a time of 14.80, in 11th place was Kyle Bowman with a time of 17.65, and in 17th place was Colten Smith with a time of 18.34. In the 100m: finishing in 15th place was Marcos
Sierra with a time of 11.81, and Jared I. Gonzales with a time of 13.52. In the 400m: finishing in seventh place was Marcos Sierra with a time of 51.80, and in12th place was Nathaniel Lopez with a time of 53.46. In the1600m: finishing in 22nd place was PJ Mortensen with a time of 5:00.12. In the 300m Hurdles: taking firth place was Wayne Newman with a time of 39.79, and
in ninth place was Kyle Bowman with a time of 45.35. In the Triple Jump: finishing in 18th place was Colten Smith with a distance of 37’1.75”. In the High Jump:
finishing in 22nd place was Ani Robles with a jump of 4’2”, and she finished in 23rd place in the Discus with at throw of 9.3”. In the 4x400m Relay: (Nathaniel Lopez, Wayne Newman, Kyle
Bowman, Marcos Sierra) placed fourth with a time of 3:31.49. Wayne Newman will compete at the Track Meet of Champions this Wednesday in Phoenix.
Safe Journey House in need of volunteers Soon, a Safe Journey House, an advocacy center for victims of domestic abuse, will be firmly established in San Manuel. There is just one thing holding it back. Unfortunately, that one thing is not a lack of potential clients. “We operate primarily with volunteers and are currently in desperate need for more volunteer advocate assistants,” said Linda Kadlecek.
An assistant would work under the supervision of a trained advocate, helping out as needed, with such tasks as making copies, answering the telephone, entertaining children, filing and research. The shifts are four hours each from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 1-5 p.m., Monday – Friday. Volunteers who can spare four hours per week, bi-weekly or even once a month are sought for each shift. A person on the JOBS pro-
gram or in need of community service work might find that they are the ideal applicant. What better way to help yourself, by honing job skills and gaining experience, than by helping others? Diamond Men out of Division IV Playoffs with loss to Tigers By Frank Smith The San Manuel Miners varsity baseball team ended their incredible run in the Division IV Playoffs after taking a 4-10 loss to eventual Champion St. David who won the State Title last Saturday by defeating Yuma Catholic 14 – 4 in six innings. San Manuel began its run into the playoffs by nabbing a #22 seed as only the top 24 teams in their respective division qualified for the playoffs. The Miners defeated #11 Ash Fork, then shocked #6 Desert Christian, and dominated #19 Valley Union to give San Manuel one of the top four spots in the state, setting up a showdown with #2 St. David in the semifinals. On Friday, May 11, the Miners traveled to Diablo Stadium in Tempe for the first game of the evening against the St. David Tigers with #1 Phoenix Christian and #4 Yuma Catholic slated to face off in the second game of the night; the winners would match up on Saturday. San Manuel was the designated visiting team and had first bats, in the top of
the first inning the Miners went scoreless with no runs, no hits, no errors, and left one runner on base; St. David came to bat in the bottom half of the first inning also going scoreless with no runs, on two hits, no errors, and left two runners on base. In the top of the second inning, the Miners did not push any runs across the plate, collecting two hits, no errors, and left two runners on base; the Tigers were held scoreless with no hits, no errors, and one runner left on base. San Manuel remained scoreless in the third inning producing one hit, no errors, and left one runner on base; St. David broke the silence scoring three runs on two hits, with no errors, and left three runners on base to take the lead 3 – 0. In the fourth inning, the Miners would not answer the call as they scored no runs, with one hit, no errors, and no runners left on base; the Tigers added to their lead scoring four runs on two hits, with two errors, and left two runners stranded for a 7 – 0 lead. The Miners still could not
push a run across in the fifth inning, with one hit, reaching base on one error, and left two runners on base; the Tigers scored two more runs on three hits, reached on one error, and left two runners on base to extend their lead 9 – 0. San Manuel battled back in the sixth inning scoring two runs on one hit, reached base on two errors, and left one runner on base to cut into the lead 2 – 9; St. David scored one more run on no hits, reached on one error, and left two runners on base for a 2 – 10 lead. The Miners would not go away quietly in the top of the seventh inning as they scored two more runs on three hits, with no errors, and left one runner on base to bring the final score to 4 – 10 in favor of the Tigers. The Miners scored two runs in the sixth inning and two runs in the seventh inning while the Tigers scored three runs in the third inning, four runs in the fourth, two runs in the fifth, and one run in the sixth inning. Marquez took the loss allowing nine hits-two for doubles, 10 runs-five earned, recorded eight strike outs, walked 10 batters, and had four wild pitches.
Offensively, John Ruiz went 2 for 3 with two runs scored, a double, one RBI, and one walk; Vinnie Valdez went 2 for 4 with one run scored, and one RBI; and T.J Brown went 3 for 3 with a double, and two RBIs. “The middle innings really hurt us, too many walks and errors. You can’t do that against a good team,” said
head coach Mike Sloan. “I am really proud of the boys and the way they finished the season. I want to thank the three seniors Alex Smith, Vinnie Valdez, and Nate Johnston for their leadership this year. The future looks bright with 22 out of 25 players returning next year.” Way to go, guys! Mammoth Library: Pushing the Limits By John Hernandez The Mammoth Public Library has been selected as one of 20 libraries in the United States to take part in the pilot program, “Pushing the Limits: Making Sense of Science: a reading, viewing and discussion series for rural libraries.” The Califa Group a California based library consortium is sponsoring the pilot program. The program will provide STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) programming for adults. The program brings the building blocks of science literacy to rural libraries and the adults in the communities they serve. Community members will be able to engage in science adven-
tures by exploring ideas through a discussion led by a STEM professional and your local librarian. There will also be feature film quality videos and recommended book reading. The theme for Pushing the Limits is “real people, real stories and real science.” Librarian Diana Stirling will be working with one of the universities and people such as scientist Dr. Linda Leigh to provide STEM professionals for discussion and learning programs. Diana and the Mammoth Library have been pushing the limit in other ways. The library continues to improve with the addition of computers, new DVDs and books (Spanish and English),
quality lectures by authors and guest speakers, educational programs for kids and adults, arts and craft classes, guitar lessons and entertainment such as the recent Craig Davis magic show. What is more amazing is that all of their events and programs are free to the public. Diana has been doing an excellent job to keep the library up to date and engage the community in library activities. In a town with a population of 1,645 residents (last census), there are 1,200 library card holders. Letter to the Editor: Sierra Oaks is a great alternative to home schooling, larger class sizes Editor, San Manuel Miner: Several years ago, I came to the realization that I would no longer be able to homeschool my daughter. Faced with this, I started looking for a school that would work best for her. The school year had already started and she had not been in a traditional school setting since preschool. I hoped to find a school that had small class sizes so that the change would be easier for her. At first, I thought I might have to drive her in to Tucson, every day. I was unaware that there would be a school in the Tri-Community that would fit my needs. One day, while I was in Oracle, I drove by a school called Sierra Oaks
and it got my attention. I made the decision to call them and find out more about their school. To my surprise, I found out that Sierra Oaks is a tuition free charter school accredited by the state. They offered to give me a tour. I was pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere and I knew this was where my daughter needed to go. She started in December 2009. At first she struggled and had a hard time adjusting. The teachers and staff worked with our family to help her. Now she is an Honor Roll student. As time went on, I became more active at the school. This school year, several of the parents and I started the PTO. We began to work with the teachers and staff

in order to improve our school. There have been many changes and in order for the school to continue to change and grow, we needed to start doing fundraisers. We started with small fundraisers, here and there. Then the decision was made to change the curriculum. As the fundraising coordinator, I was asked if I might know of a way to have a huge fundraiser. So, I brought up the idea of having a concert. Within a week, I had rock and metal bands contacting me for information about how they could help. Next thing I knew, my small concert idea had turned into a huge even for the Tri-Community and to help raise money for our school. On June 2, Sierra Oaks will be hosting the TriCommunity Palooza. There will be eight bands performing onstage in the San Manuel High School auditorium. I am honored that so many bands of this caliber were willing to donate their time and talent to play at this event. We will be featuring Dirtnap, Snakes in Love, Legion, Finding Clarity, D2D, Butcher, Newtronn 1 Project and Switching
Tides. All of this would still be a dream and not an event getting ready to take place, if it weren’t for the help of the following businesses: Aladdin Graphics, Dale’s Auto, Mammoth Lumber, New Moon Haven, Romo’s and San Pedro Pizza, just to name a few! We are still working with several local businesses and haven’t received final confirmation, yet. While the concert is going on in the auditorium, there will be plenty of activities to please everyone’s unique tastes such as raffles, a jumping castle, games and activities for the kids, vendors, food booths, a Shine ‘N’ Show Car Show, and even a junk car to be destroyed in the parking lot. The concert ticket price is $8, and each paying adult may bring up to two children, under the age of 10, for free. The ticket price includes access to all the music, games and good food to purchase that you can handle, for all day fun, starting at noon. Continued from Page 4 over 40 votes. We then proceeded with voting for the “B” Delegate. Again every one voting with the Ron Paul slate voted for their candidate in CD1. This time we placed the ballots in a box which then were ushered back down to be counted by the secretary accompanied by our Ron Paul person. Eventually we were told that if we felt that the vote for the “B” delegate was accurate we could return to the floor. We all decided to stay. After several more hours they decided that we needed to return the floor to continue with the convention and the results would be read while we were out there. As we
started to proceed to the floor at the very last minute the results of the “B” delegate vote came up. The Ron Paul candidate in CD1 won with a large portion of the vote. We finally got back down to the floor and sat in our county seating. After more speaking and announcements we proceeded to vote for the Delegates at large and National Committeeman/ woman. We first voted for the “A” delegates at large and then the “B” delegates at large. After finishing our votes we deposited the ballots into the plastic box to taken back and counted. The convention continued by taking nominations from the floor for the National Committeeman/woman. The Ron Paul slate voted for the former State Senator, Karen
Johnson and the Supervisor District-Two Chairman who were nominated from the floor. Once finished with that vote we deposited the ballots into the box again to be counted. Then the wait began again. They wanted to adjourn the convention and said that if they needed to do a re-vote for National Committeeman/woman it would be done by mail. Every one said no. Then the GOP leaders stood around for a long time discussing what to do. While we waited it felt like they turned off the air conditioning because it got considerably hot. They finally announced the winners for the National Committeeman/woman position. The former State Senator won by a landslide. However, the Supervisor
District-Two Chairman did not win allegedly. They still stated that they might still do the mail ballots as well. They never announced the results of the delegates and alternates at large. Then it was eventually announced by Tom Morressey and his gabble to adjourn the convention to the objection to the remaining delegates on the floor. The majority of Romney supporters had left leaving mostly Ron Paul supporters. The Arizona GOP did not want to do a new vote with the majority of Romney supporters gone. After Morressey quickly left the building after not properly adjourning the meeting another person took the microphone on the stage and started to speak. He was censored by the GCU

He eventually got away from them and everyone moved upfront to the stage to hear what he was saying. It was decided to continue with the convention without the GOP leadership of Tom Morressey. We then proceeded to elect a new chair who was the Legislative District-6 Chairman, a Ron Paul supporter. During this time they started lowering the lights and forced us into the parking lot. This is when we congregated around the RV that was the Ron Paul Precinct Committeeman booth in the church parking lot next door. The Legislative District-6 Chairman continued with his speech there. I helped with the tear down and packing away of the equipment for the PC booth as we were heckled by campus police. San Manuel High School makes ‘Best High Schools’ list San Manuel High School has made the U.S. News & World Report magazine’s Best High Schools 2012 list. The magazine evaluated nearly 22,000 public high schools in 49 states and the District of Columbia. This is an unsolicited award based solely on data. The schools were rated on state proficiency standards for math and reading, the preparation of students for college, and other factors such as how the schools least advantaged students (black, Hispanic and low income) were performing. U.S. News teamed up with the American Institute for Research to analyze the data on state assessments, test scores and college readiness methodology. The top rated schools were awarded medals. U.S. News awarded 4,850 gold, silver and bronze medals to the top rated schools. San Manuel High School was awarded a bronze medal. San Manuel made the previous Best High Schools rankings the last time U.S. News evaluated schools in 2009. Fiesta de la Primavera set for this Saturday in San Manuel From arts and crafts to drinks, food and games, from horse shoes and live
entertainment to crowning of a queen (see related story), St. Bartholomew’s Fiesta
de la Primavera offers a variety of entertainment and diversion this Saturday from 11 am until 10 pm
at St. Bartholomew’s Catholic church at the corner of Main and Park in San Manuel. There is no charge for the dance, starting at 7 p.m. in the parish hall. Local musicians, The Cardells, and folk singer John Huntington (Huntington Chiropractic, Oracle) will entertain along with Tucson’s
Mariachi Alma and Ballet Folklorico from Naco, Arizona. A blind draw horse shoe tournament, directed by Roberto Estrada (3854285), will start at 1 p.m. Cost is $15 per player. A group of Pinal County judges, led by Justice of the Peace Arnold Estrada, have donated trophies to the top four teams.
The Knights of Columbus will host their second annual co-ed softball tournament at the San Manuel softball field across the street from the fiesta. After the executive session, it was announced that David Garcia would be the town’s new Director of Public Works. Garcia lives in San Manuel with his wife, Elizabeth, daughter, Megan (15), and son, Michael (13).

Garcia enjoys living in the Tri-Community. “San Manuel is a great place to raise our kids,” Garcia said. “They receive a good education here and we give back by volunteering in the community.” Elizabeth volunteers at the San Manuel Library, works with the Boy Scouts and the Sea Lions swim team. Megan was recently inducted into the National Honor Society at San Manuel High School. She participates in sports and is a two-year letterman on the swim team. She also swims for the Sea Lions and hopes to be a lifeguard this summer. Michael competes on the Sea Lions swim team and competes in sports at San Manuel Junior High School. He is in the National Junior Honor Society and has participated in scouting since first grade. The Garcia family has lived in San Manuel for 10 years. Garcia has an Associates of Applied Science degree in Environmental Technology from Pima Community College. He has an Advanced Certificate for Waste Water Treatment Technology and Water Treatment technology. He has been certified by the Arizona Department of Environmental

David has more than 16 years experience in Public Works including working with water systems. He worked seven years for the City of Globe as a Waste Water Treatment Operator. He was employed by Pima County Waste Water Department for seven years. He supervised the Ina Road Waste Water Treatment Facility and supervised a five man crew of operators. He has also worked for the Town of Hayden. Garcia should be a welcome addition to the Town of Mammoth Public Works.
