Sr., 52, San Manuel, was arrested at the San Manuel PCSO substation on a warrant for failure to appear.

He was transported and booked into the Pinal County Jail.

PCSO assisted Mammoth Police with a domestic violence call.

May 7 Thomas Joe Windham, 34, San Manuel, was arrested in the area of First Ave. and Second Ave., San Manuel, on a warrant for failure to appear. He was transported and booked into the Pinal County Jail.

Theft of prescription medication was reported to PCSO at the Oracle substation.

Forest Service seeking applicants for Advisory Council Tucson, AZ –The Forest Service is seeking candidates to serve on the Arizona National Scenic Trail Advisory Council.

The Council was established pursuant to the National Trails System Act (NTSA). The purpose of the council will be to provide recommendations to the Secretary of Agriculture, through the Chief of the Forest Service, about matters relating to the administration and management of the Arizona National Scenic Trail (Arizona Trail).

The Council will consist of not more than 13 members and provide a balanced and broad representation within each of the following interests: The Regional Forester of the Southwestern Region, Forest Service, or a designee; The State Director of the Arizona State Office of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), or designee; The Regional Director of the Intermountain Region, National Park Service (NPS), or designee; One representative of the State of Arizona, selected from recommendations by the Governor; Arizona State Parks; County or Municipal Parks & Recreation Departments; American Indian tribal interests; National Scenic Trail and non-motorized trail user organizations; Ranching industry; Conservation organizations; Gateway Communities; and Private landholders.

As Arizona’s only designated national scenic trail, the Arizona Trail is a primitive, longdistance, non-motorized route stretching over 800 miles across the state from Mexico to Utah. It connects deserts, mountains, forests, wilderness, canyons, historic sites and communities, and showcases Arizona’s diverse

vegetation, wildlife and scenery.

This will be the first year of the Arizona National Scenic Trail Advisory Council, and council members should commit to serving a full term of two years.

Interested candidates should have a desire to perpetuate and protect the characteristics and values for which the Trail was established while taking into consideration other pubic interests along the trail corridor.

Written nominations must be received within 60 days from the date of the Federal

Register publication of notice of intent to establish an advisory council and call for nominations.

Nominations must contain a completed application packet that includes the nominee’s name, resume, and completed form AD755 (Advisory Committee Membership Background

Governor honors Community Advisory Board with Statewide Volunteer Service Award FLORENCE, AZ – They represent business, farming, education, corrections, law enforcement, public health and other professions. They give tirelessly – each of the 12 logging in excess of 500 volunteer hours per year.

But Pinal County’s Juvenile Court Community Advisory Board just got a big statewide thank you from Governor Jan Brewer after they earned the Governor’s Volunteer Service Award in the Small Organization category.

The 12 members making up the Community Advisory Board, or CAB, hail from nine different communities and provide essential community support to the juvenile justice system in Pinal County. Their mission is to ensure that the county’s practices reflect

the best interest of youth, families, victims and the community. The CAB provides special services to youth on probation and in detention. An annual Youth Summit provided 80 probationers education on topics ranging from health and fitness to substance abuse and domestic violence prevention.

“This is a very involved group of volunteers, it’s not just a steering committee – these people are involved with the youth providing mentoring, support and enrichment,” Program Administrator Donna McBride said. “Youth on probation or in detention depend on the involvement of adults who can mentor them and be models of success. No matter how they arrived in the

as 200 middle school and high school students take over the courthouse. The students learn firsthand about the justice system by being part of it. This year’s event in March marked the 11th annual Mock Trial Competition.

Several of the CAB’s other high profile activities include: TALK! Visitors’ Mentoring Program, Probation and Youth Justice Center Incentive Program, Drug Court, Youth Summit and GED graduations.

Several years ago, 11 Arizona counties had CABs but many folded due to a lack of state funding.

Pinal’s CAB got together to discuss the funding plight.

St. Bartholomew’s to host Fiesta de la Primavera San Manuel, AZ – Come to Fiesta de la Primavera on May 1, at St. Bartholomew’s Church located on the corner of North Main Street and Park Avenue in San Manuel for all-day

wholesome family fun.

Mt. Vista athletes honored

By John Hernandez On Wednesday May 8, Mountain Vista School held their annual Athletic Banquet. The banquet honored the school’s athletes and coaches. Families of the athletes attended the dinner and watched the presentation of awards.

This year’s Athletes of the Year were Leticia Garcia and John Mechado. Millie Mercer was also honored for her outstanding performance at the CJHL Championship Track Meet where she won four medals.

Music lessons have been scientifically proven to help with knowledge retention, improve grades, promote self-discipline and self-confidence, to improve dyslexia and so much more. Unfortunately, music

and art programs have been removed from many schools, meaning that children can only access these benefits through private lessons, which often cost more than their family can afford. The OWN music scholarship was created to help financially

disadvantaged children to get the benefits associated with taking music lesson.

Donations to the OWN musical scholarship are welcome; especially electric keyboards.

Mammoth Seniors host monthly potluck at community center

By John Hernandez The Mammoth Seniors monthly potluck was held on Wednesday at the Mammoth Community Center. After lunch, Senior Circle Manager Joanie Johnson spoke about the benefits of joining the Senior Circle, a Northwest healthcare resource.

Northwest Medical Center and Oro Valley Hospital offer the Senior Circle benefits which include wellness programs and prescription drug discount cards. There is also special member pricing for blood screenings, mammograms, bone density scans, and

By John Hernandez The new Oracle Fire District Board is dealing with $50,000 in budget cuts which will impact the Oracle Fire Department this year. The Board has come up with a proposed budget that will avoid having to lay off anyone or raise taxes. The budget has no raises for staff this year and the elminations of a supplemental insurance plan.

The insurance provided a supplemental income for someone suffering a serious injury, and it was

found that no government agencies provided this type of insurance for their employees.

The Board said they met their three major goals when they worked on the budget: not raising taxes; maintaining personnel levels and providing the needed coverage for fire safety.

The regular OFD Board meeting began with a member of the CERT Team and others paying tribute to Charleen McCarley Tippy, who passed away Apr. 28.

The Fire Board interviewed four candidates for the permanent Fire Chief position. A decision on their selection will be forthcoming. A proposed expansion of the fire station will have to be put on hold due to budget cuts. Other ways of finding funding for the

construction project such as grants or fund raising activities will be pursued.

Top ten SMHS students honored at banquet

By John Hernandez The top ten academic students of the San Manuel High School 2013 senior class were honored at a banquet at the Oracle Inn on Wednesday, May 8.

The students posed for pictures with their parents and enjoyed a fine dinner.

Superintendent John Ryan recognized the students for their hard work and accomplishments and each was presented with a personalized Airflyte pen.

There were three Valedictorians selected this year: Max Duffy, Wyatt Fessenden and Wayne Newman. The other top students were Leticia Reidhead, Rosa Reyes, Kiana Estrada, Angel Esquivel, Aubrianne Estrada, Sarah Robles and Alexis Garibay. Most Inspirational Teacher award was presented to Ms. Linda Brooks.

Each student got to select the teacher that most inspired them. Each teacher received a trophy with “Most Inspirational Teacher” and the name of the student that selected them engraved on it.

Each student wrote how they were inspired by the teacher they selected.

The teacher chosen by Max Duffy was Mr. Miles.

Max said of Mr. Miles: “Mr. Miles inspired me because not only is he passionate about teaching, but also about learning.

He has such vast stores of knowledge because as every good scientist is, he is incredibly curious about the world of science and loves satisfying his curiosity. I wish that one day I will learn as much as him and then be able to share the knowledge with everyone as he has.”

Champs! Lady Miners capture the

By Frank Smith The San Manuel Lady Miners varsity softball team captured the Division IV State Softball Championship by defeating the North West Christian Crusaders 5 - 4 on May 11 at the Rose Mofford Softball Complex in Phoenix.

The Lady Miners entered the semi-finals as the #2 seed and first faced off against the #14 seed the Miami Lady Vandals on May 10 in the Semi-Finals and won 3 – 2 in a very close match-up to advance to the finals.

San Manuel had played Miami twice before during the regular season beating the Lady Vandals 5 – 3 and 11 – 5. But this time around the difference was a single run.

The Lady Miners scored late in the game, scoring two runs in the fifth inning and one run in the sixth inning; Lyana Waddell led the fifth inning with a walk; Mariah McBride followed with another walk; Nicole Encinas got out on base a sacrifice bunt moving runners to scoring position, and Mireya Tamayo then hit a single to drive in both runs.

In the sixth inning the Lady Miners scored with one out. Angelica Zuniga had drawn a walk and Waddell got hit by a pitch. McBride attempted a sacrifice bunt, but Miami was unable to handle it, making an error at first and allowing Zuniga to score.

Miami scored one run in the third inning when the eighth hitter in the lineup Garcia, got on with a single, and got to second on an error at short. She got to third on a passed ball. The number nine hitter struck out, but Johnson, who was the top of the line up, singled driving Garcia in to score. San Manuel held them until the top of the seventh when on two outs Johnson again singled and was followed by Mawson with a double driving Johnson in. The inning ended when

In the circle was Lyana Waddell with Felicia Medina catching. Waddell faced 30 batters in seven innings allowing two runs (earned) on eight hits, recording three strikeouts and one walk.

At the plate, Mireya Tamayo went 2 for 4 with two singles, and one RBI; Felicia Medina went 2 for 3 with two doubles; and Mariah McBride had one RBI. “This was a tough game for us. Miami came out ready to play and they gave us a great game. When you see the same team three times in one season, and you’ve

already beat them twice… that third game can be scary,” Head Coach Deanne Brewer said. “We went to the plate very aggressively, but we were swinging at the high ball. We really hurt ourselves by not being disciplined. We squeezed out four hits. That’s not a normal game for us. We went to the short game and Miami struggled with it. We worked very hard this season not only on the short game, but ball placement in the short game. Every bunt we put down was down the first base side. I believe that gave us the momentum we needed.”

In the Championship game, it was the #1 seed Northwest

Christian against the #2 seed San Manuel – the way brackets are destined to be, pitting the best against the best. This was a game for the ages … a true championship game.

The Lady Miners wore their mantra on the shirts that read, “More Hustle, More Heart, More Sweat, More Desire” and that could of not been “More True” as the young San Manuel team displayed the all of the above and then some to show the poise of a true an tested team to win it all.

Brewer said, “Intense. This game was intense. We scored one run in the second inning when Zuniga hit a solo homer.

We stayed up 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning when Northwest scored two runs on two outs.”

The Lady Miners came up to bat in the top of the first inning with Mireya Tamayo popping up to the first baseman. Felicia Gomez then grounded out to the third baseman, and Alyssa Cuellar struck out for the third out of the inning; San Manuel scored no runs on no hits with no errors and no runners left on base.

In the bottom half of the first inning, the first NW batter hit a ground ball to second base. The throw was mishandled at first base but

quickly recovered and thrown back to second. The runner was tagged out in an attempt for an extra base. The second batter hit a fly ball to right field for the second out of the inning. The next batter drew a walk and the next batter flied out to right field for the third out of the inning. Northwest scored no runs on no hits or errors, and left one on base for a score of 0 – 0.

In the second inning, Felicia Medina lined out to the short stop. Mackenzie Vindiola popped up to the short stop.

The Miners scored one run on one hit with no errors and no runners left on base. San Manuel took the lead 1 – 0.

NW’s first batter came to bat and got on base with a double to the gap between left and center field. The next batter popped up to the short stop.

The third batter hit a blooper just behind second base to move the runner over to third base. With the fourth batter at the plate, San Manuel’s catcher Medina threw the ball back to third base to pick off the runner at third for the second out of the inning.

NW’s next batter struck out to end the inning. The Lady Crusaders scored no runs on two hits with no errors and one runner left on base. The score was still 1 – 0.

In the third inning, SM’s McBride popped up to the short stop. Encinas got thrown out at third base after reaching base on a bunt and attempting to get an extra base on a steal.

Tamayo and Gomez got on base and then Cuellar flied out to center field for the third

out of the inning. The Lady Miners scored no runs on one hit with one error and two runners left one base. The score was still 1 – 0.

Northwest came to bat in the third. The first batter for the inning lined out to center field, the second batter got a single, the next batter drew a walk, the next batter flied out to left field, and the next batter grounded out to the short stop for the third out of the inning. Northwest scored no runs, on one hit with two runners left on base, leaving the score 1-0.

In the fourth inning, Medina flied out to left field, Vindiola popped up to the short stop, and Zuniga grounded out to second base; the Lady Miners had no runs on no hits with no errors and no runners left on base, the base was 1 – 0.

Northwest came to bat in the bottom half of the inning, the first batter popped up to short stop, the second batter struck out, the next batter hit a single and took second base on a passed ball, the next batter popped up to second base for the third out of the inning; North West scored no runs on

one hit with one error and one left on base, score was still 1 – 0 San Manuel.

In the fifth inning, Waddell drew a walk, McBride struck out, Encinas hustled for a single, Tamayo singled to centerfield to load the bases with Gomez coming up to bat – Gomez popped up to the short stop, Cuellar had the

bases loaded but she grounded out to the pitcher; San Manuel scored no runs on two hits with no errors and three runners left on base, with the score still 1 – 0.

The Lady Crusaders came up to bat with the first two batters grounded out for the first two outs and the third batter popped up to the second baseman to end the inning; no runs, no hits, no errors, and no one left on base.

In the sixth inning, Medina flied to center, Vindiola grounded out to the pitcher, and Zuniga grounded out to third base; no run, no hits,no and no errors with no one left on base, with no one left on base.

In the bottom half of the inning, the first batter grounded out to second base, the second batter popped up to the short stop for the second out of the inning, the third batter hit a double to left field, the next batter got on base with an error on the short stop, the fifth batter dropped a single over second base to score a run, the sixth batter hit a single into left field to score another run to take the lead 2 – 1, the seventh batter

grounded out to the short stop to end the inning; North West scored two runs on three hits, on one error and had two runners left on base, the score was now 2 – 1 in favor of Northwest.

But what happens when the pressure is on?

“We rally,” Brewer said.

“We have been that team all year. We are good when the pressure is on. We are great in a two out situation.”

In the top of the seventh inning, the Lady Miners battled back. Waddell came up to bat and drew a walk.

McBride struck out. Encinas grounded out to the third baseman.

“Here comes the rally,” Brewer said. “Tamayo singled to get herself on base.

Gomez drew a walk. I knew their pitcher was rattled and we had the meat of our lineup coming up. I told them to wait for their pitch. Look for one pitch and to keep the bat on their shoulder until they got that pitch. I knew the more pitches their pitcher had to throw the better opportunity we had to make something happen.”

“We had had loaded bases earlier in the game, but I knew the pressure was really on Northwest at that point,” Brewer said.

Cuellar came to the plate and she had been struggling to get her bat going for the past couple of at bats, Brewer explained. The coach called time out to talk to her and “settle her down. I told her she was in the driver seat and she needed to look for her pitch.”

Cuellar did. She drew a walk scoring Waddell and tying up the game.

Then Medina stepped to the plate. “Medina has been solid all season,” Brewer said. “I never doubt this kid. I knew she was going to make it happen and sure enough she did.”

With the bases still loaded Medina stepped to the plate and hit a single to right field scoring Tamayo and Gomez to score two runs. Vindiola came to bat and hit a shot into left field to score Cuellar to add to the lead. Zuniga came up to bat and grounded out to the short stop. When the dust settled, the Lady Miners scored four runs on three hits with no errors and two left on base. San Manuel now had the upper hand, 5-2, leaving Northwest Christian with last bats.

Northwest had the top of their line-up coming to the plate.

The coach told Waddell to keep the ball down so SM could get ground balls. “We didn’t want them on base,” Brewer said.

NW’s first batter hit a double into left field. The next batter hit another double into left field to move the runner from second base to third. The third batter hit a sacrifice fly to score the first batter who tagged up. The fourth batter hit a single that was bobbled Lady Miners, Page 12

Brewer’s thoughts were, “These two runs don’t matter.

We have to get outs.”

The next batter hit a short fly to Encinas in right field which she made a shoe-string catch and threw the ball to home in an effort to get the runner. The throw was high and she was safe. Runner was at third one out. The next batter Rodenkick hit a ball back to Waddell that she bobbled and couldn’t make a play on, scoring yet another run. Runner at first, one out.

Petlit hit a ball to short that McBride threw to Tamayo at second to get the second out.

And the praying begins… the next batter hits a ball to Waddell that she bobbles, recovers and throws the batter out at first. Miners win 5-4!

In the circle was Waddell with Medina catching, Waddell faced 33 batters allowing four runs (two earned) on nine hits, recorded one strikeout, two walks, two stolen bases, and one passed ball.

At the plate, Mireya Tamayo went 2 for 4 with a singles; Felicia Gomez went 1 for 3 with a single; Alyssa Cuellar went 0 for 3 with a walk, and one RBI; Felicia Medina went 1 for 4, with a single, and two RBIs; Mackenzie Vindiola went 1 for 4 with a single, and an RBI;Angelica Zuniga went 1 for 4 with a home run, and one RBI; and Nicole Encinas went 2 for 2 with singles, and a sacrifice.

“We had a great season,” Brewer said. “These girls came a long way. At the beginning of the season we were going to the batter’s box looking scared, by the end of the season we are pounding the ball. We improved by leaps and bounds when it came to executing the

The unity of these girls is unbelievable. They believed in themselves and their teammates, they trusted the coaches and did what was asked of them. The parents supported us the whole way.

I cannot thank the parents enough for their support of the program and my coaching.

They let us do our jobs. That made the difference.”

Brewer continued, “You know the saying, ‘Winning is contagious’? I believe we caught the bug in the Wickenburg tournament. We had lost almost every game we played to bigger schools.

We were in the consolation bracket and we had a team meeting. We decided we should take the consolation bracket. We did it and from then on (with the exception of the two losses to Empire and one to Hayden), we kept it together. During the Hayden tournament, they proved themselves and what they could do. We came back and won the tournament. It was awesome. We told them all the rest of the season to remember that feeling and capture it. It became who we were. I can’t tell you how many times we rallied with two outs. I am just so proud of my girls. They did it! We did it! Winning is fun!”

San Manuel had not been to

the Championship game since 1994 when the Lady Miners, under the direction of the late Coach Jeff Rupright, defeated Show Low 7 -1 in the then 3A Division to claim the title.

The Lady Miners softball program is rich in history with Coach Shelia Baize winning the Championship titles in

1977, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982 and taking RunnersUp titles in 1978, 1983, and 1984; Coach Jeff Rupright picked up the torch and brought home Runners-Up titles in 1986, 1987, 1991 and captured the Championship in 1990 by beating Show Low 7 – 6 in eight innings.

May 15, 2013 Current, 14-year Head Coach Deanne Brewer picked up the torch in 1999 and has been to several quarter-final and semi- finals. This was Brewer’s first trip to the finals and she did not falter - the torch that has been passed down to Brewer may have dimmed and flickered at times

throughout the years but the flame never went out and now with the young team that is set to return next year…the flame seems shine as bright as ever.

Newman brings home three individual titles at state track meet

By Frank Smith The Miner Track team sent six athletes to the state track and field championships to compete on May 10 and 11 at Mesa Community College in Mesa.

In the 110m Hurdle finals, Wayne Newman blew away the competition with a time of 14.52 defending his 2012 title.

He again took the 300m Hurdle title with a time of 38.41, he also placed fifth in the high jump and was champion in long jump with a jump of 22’8.25”.

“In both the prelims and finals, Wayne looked so strong against the competition,” head coach Maria Lopez said. “In each race there was plenty of daylight between Wayne and the rest of the field.

Miners fall to Phoenix Christian in state semi-finals

By Frank Smith The San Manuel Miners varsity baseball team fell 8 – 6 to the Phoenix Christian Cougars, in the Division IV State Semi-Finals on May 10 at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

The Miners had a another surprise run into the state playoffs as they entered the tournament as the no. 18 seed and worked their way into the top four teams of Division IV. The Cougars came into the tournament as the no.

3 seed and lost to Desert Christian from Tucson in the Championship game on Saturday.

San Manuel was evenly matched with Phoenix Christian and were presented a chance to come from behind to tie and possibly win. However, the Miners could not catch a lucky bounce late in the game, committing one too many errors that would ultimately cost them the game and a spot in the championship game.

The game was scoreless until the Cougars broke the silence, pushing two runs across the plate in the bottom of the third inning. San Manuel answered back with two runs of their own as the Baseball, Page 16

His times were such that he would have beat out all Division III and Division II competitors, and if running against Division I runners, would have placed in the top three.”

Newman will compete this Wednesday at Brophy Prep in the Meet of Champions.

On May 10, the results in the Girls Discus: Ani Robles had a throw of 74’4.50” and Maxi Lara had a throw of 77’8”.

In the 100m dash, Lizzette Campa posted a time of 14.24. In the 110m Hurdles, Wayne Newman posted a time of 14.37. In the 300m Hurdles, Wayne Newman posted a time 38.67 and Jared Gonzales posted a time of 49.77.

Former teacher passes torch to track star

By John Hernandez Casey Egan was at the Divisional Track meet in San Manuel earlier this month to congratulate San Manuel High School track star Wayne Newman.

Newman is undefeated in the high hurdles this year.

He has won every race he has competed in including the Willie Williams Track meet in Tucson.

At the Willie Williams meet, he competed against athletes from many of the larger schools in Tucson.

Wayne broke Casey Egan’s school record in the 110-meter high hurdles with a new time of 14.12 seconds. Casey had held the record since 1976 with a time of 14.5.

Casey congratulated Wayne and told him a finer kid couldn’t have been chosen to have broken his record. Casey was also Wayne’s 5th grade teacher at B Avenue Elementary School. Casey

also encouraged Wayne to go for his record in the intermediate hurdles.

Wayne Newman has qualified for the state meet. He will be attending

school at Lipscomb College on a partial track scholarship.

Mammoth Elementary STEM School

Visiting the Smallhouse Ranch in Redington Mrs. Formo’s Class went on a field trip to the Smallhouse Ranch. We started out on a hayride. We rode through the oat and alfalfa fields and saw a hawk’s nest way up in a dead cottonwood tree. Next we saw a big owl sitting in a mesquite tree. The cows were chasing us and trying to eat the alfalfa hay we were sitting on. There were some different colored cows; black, black and white, butter colored, and silver.

We walked up a big hill to see the green houses. Mr. Smallhouse showed us how they make compost to grow the saguaros. It is different than the way we make compost. It has sawdust, sand, and cow manure and ours has table scraps, paper, and leaves. We saw different sized saguaros growing. Some were about two inches and some were even bigger.

We returned to the trailer and headed back through the field.

Along the way, we stopped and collected soil samples so we can test to see how much nitrogen is in the soil where alfalfa is growing and where oats are growing. The alfalfa puts nitrogen into the soil and makes it richer. After we got back, we ate lunch beside the horse corrals. We were done and headed back up the San Pedro Valley to school. The Smallhouses took their time and showed us all these neat things and we appreciate their kindness.

One side note to this story: Johnny Smallhouse is a student in Mrs. Formo’s class.

He shared his knowledge of farming and life on a ranch with his classmates.

Desert Walks

By Alyssandra Alvarez and Mason Stewart Mrs. Faulkenberry’s first grade class and Mrs. Formo’s kindergarten class have been going on walks out into the

desert near the school. We went to go see with our eyes what the environment was like there. We saw flowers and we found a seed in a flower.

We also found a lot of cactus.

Mrs. Faulkenberry taught us about phenology which is the study of periodic plant and life cycles and how these are influenced by seasons and climate. All of us adopted a plant to observe throughout the year. We could pick a cactus, tree, or bush. There are creosote bushes, hedgehog cactus, saguaro cactus, palo verde trees, Christmas Tree cactus, Teddy Bear Cholla, and more. My friends picked out a cactus and they drew it. Some people picked the

same ones and others picked differently. We saw a gila monster on our last hike.

We saw him trying to find food and water. We saw a red bug on a plant and it was pollinating. We will continue to study our plants throughout the year as they grow and change.

Life cycle of a seed Students have been working very hard in Mrs. Maestas’ preschool classroom learning about the life cycle of a seed. Students can tell you the three things a seed needs in order to grow {sun, water, & soil}. Students have also learned the parts of a plant and how pollination occurs.

Students were able to watch as their own seeds grew roots, sprouted stems, grew leaves and turned into plants. Students then potted the plants they grew from seeds into pots they made themselves and will be giving them to their mom’s as one of their Mother’s Day gifts.

VBS 2013 Mountain Shadows Presbyterian Church, located at the corner of Oracle and Mountain Rd., will be holding a program, “Clean Water for All God’s Children,” for kids from K-12 years from July 22 -26, from, 9 am - noon. On Sun., July 28, there will be a special worship service featuring the children who will sing, offer Bible verses, and share their experiences.

Volunteers are sought to help with the program, especially a photographer and anyone who can sing (on or off key), “shepherds” to see that youngsters get from program to program, and “gophers” to find necessary items from nearby stores.

There will also be a pre-K program that needs adult support and a person who can lead the reflections at the end of the day is welcome.

Phoenix put together a big inning in the fourth as the Miners committed a few errors that allowed the Cougars to score five runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead 7 – 1.

The Miners would not go down quietly as they got things going to score three runs in the top of the fifth inning to cut into the lead at 5 – 7. Phoenix Christian

would score one more run in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead to 8 – 5.

In the sixth inning, the Miners were only able to push one more run across the plate to fall short 8 – 6 and take the loss to the Cougars as the Miners failed to score in the top of the seventh inning.

The Miners scored six runs on six hits and committed four errors while the Cougars scored eight runs on six hits and committed three runs.

On the mound for the Miners was Anthony Garcia (5 – 2) with T.J Brown

catching and Shane Kelly coming in for relieve Garcia.

Garcia allowed five hits, seven runs-four earned, struck out three batters and walked four.

Offensively, Demetrious Dietz went 1 for 3 with one run scored and one RBI, Anthony Garcia went 1 for 3 with one run scored and one RBI, Marty Rodriguez went 1 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, and Danny Quijada went 1 for 1 with a triple.

“I am very proud of all the guys how they never gave up during the game,” head coach Steve Elmore said.

“If a couple bounces go our way or a couple hits drop, we could have won the game.

It’s not the outcome that the seniors wanted, but I hope they are happy with finishing in the top four in the state.”

Elmore said it is a big accomplishment to do it once, but most of these guys have done it for two straight years. “Next year’s group will be looking to make it three straight years,” he added. “I just want to thank the players for letting me coach them this year, it was a lot of fun that I will not forget.”

“Our volunteers support the juveniles, provide educational value to schools and help initiate community service programs that allow youth in the justice system to repair the damage done by their crime. We hope this program can serve as a model for others.”

There are volunteer health care professionals, firemen, coaches for youth sports, tutors, teachers, food bank workers, grant writers and more. Just about every job skill available out in the community can be used by volunteer groups and organizations in our communities.

The San Manuel Miner will be starting a new regular feature that hopes to connect non-profit organizations, churches, schools and events with volunteers. EASTERN PINAL COUNTY, Ariz. – In one of the most communityoriented college graduations in the country, 11 students will receive degrees and certificates during Central Arizona College’s Aravaipa Campus commencement ceremony on Friday, May 17, at 6:30 p.m. in Eastern Pinal County.

The Aravaipa Campus is located at 80440 E. Aravaipa Road, just off of Arizona State Route 77 between Winkelman and Oracle.

Ten students will receive degrees, while an 11th will receive a certificate.

Each student will be wearing specific medallions, stoles and cords signifying the programs with which they are affiliated. Students wearing gold medallions are graduates of the honors program, while those wearing gold stoles are members of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society.

Students wearing blue cords are graduates of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) program, while those wearing red cords belong to CAC’s TRIO student success program and students donning silver stoles are members of CAC’s Student Leadership Organization.

Graduates also will wear

various tassels depending on the degrees that they are receiving. Those with white tassels are receiving associate of arts degrees, while those wearing gold tassels are earning an associate of science degree.

Associate of business degree recipients will sport drab tassels, associate of applied science will wear green, associate of general studies will wear gray, and those earning certificates will don blue tassels.

Serving as the commencement speaker for the ceremony is Joe Pyritz, a 1983 graduate of CAC and a native of San Manuel, Ariz. Pyritz is the communications and community relations administrator for Pinal County, a post he has held since 1999.

Prior to taking on his current role with the county, Pyritz could be seen on televisions across Tucson as a reporter and fill-in anchor for the city’s ABC affiliate KGUN-TV During his tenure as part of KGUN’s news team, Pyritz earned an award from the Associated Press, an accolade he is quick to recognize as a team award. He also was a bit of a trailblazer, becoming Tucson’s first multimedia journalist. This meant that he had to shoot, edit and report his own stories, which is not uncommon in today’s newsrooms but was

Upon leaving KGUN, Pyritz moved into his current role with the county. As Pinal’s communications and community relations administrator, he oversees the county’s government television station, Channel Pinal, and organizes special events throughout the

county, among his many other duties.

In 2012, Pyritz was inducted onto the CAC Wall of Success.

Born and raised in San Manuel, Pyritz attended the University of Arizona after completing his associate degree at CAC. At Arizona, he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science.
