Audrey Marie Mercado, 29, passed away suddenly January 30, 2013, at Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center in Globe. Audrey was born April 8, 1983, in Tucson, to Leonardo Mercado and Deana Mercado. Except for a few months living in New Mexico, she spent her entire lifetime in Arizona. She attended Ray Schools

and went on to receive her GED and a Medical Office Assistant certification through the JobCorp program in Tucson. She exceeded in her studies there and accomplished much in a short amount of time, with honors. She followed with a job at a neurologist’s office in Tucson before returning to her home town. Most recently she was a popular and dedicated waitress at Maria’s Restaurant in Hayden. She had just started a new job in Globe.
Audrey is survived by her father, Leonardo Mercado, and stepmother, Raven Mercado, of Grass Valley, California; her mother, Deana Mercado of Kearny; a sister, Alise Andrea Mercado of Kearny; three brothers, Aaron Daniel, Moses Antonio and David Quanah, all of Grass Valley, California. Kearny. Also surviving are her nana, Antonia Mercado of San Tan Valley; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends. She was preceded in death by her tata, Jacob Mercado; grandparents, Ray and Mary Russell; and an aunt, Belinda Dion. Audrey will be missed in so many lives. Her smile would lighten a room and her friendships were true. Life was not easy for her at times, but she always had the drive to bounce back and move forward. She will always be remembered by many people for that quality and for the three beautiful girls she has blessed us with. A Memorial Service
will be held at Griffith Mortuary in Kearny on Feb. 9, 2013 at 10 a.m. Pastor David Wade and David Marbain and Ruth Valdizon will speak on behalf of the family. There will be a pot luck luncheon/Family Blessing Service at the picnic area of the Boyce Thompson Arboretum in Superior after the Memorial for any who would like to attend. Attendees to the Arboretum gathering may check in at the Visitor Center and mention that they are a guest of the Mercado gathering and the $9 admission fee will be covered by the family. Please join us as this was one of Audrey’s favorite places to be.

John Edward Mitchell June 17, 1939 – January 29, 2013
John Edward Mitchell went to his eternal rest Jan. 29. He was born June 17, 1939 in Ada, Oklahoma to John and Lossie (Yarborough) Mitchell. As an infant, the family moved to Miami where he attended school. In the mid-50’s, they moved to Wheatfields. John graduated from Globe High School in 1957. In Dec. of the same year he went to work at Kennecott Copper Company in Hayden, where he was a Boilermaker. He retired from there in 2004. John married Wanda Shedd and they divorced after 23 years of marriage. He got remarried to Dena May Goodwin and resided in Dudleyville until her death 25 years later. John was also preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jerry (Jo Ann) Mitchell of Phoenix, Ronnie (Margie) Mitchell of Globe, Joe (Linda) Mitchell of Miami, Jesse (Karen) Mitchell of Globe (Safford); and two stepdaughters, Jessie and
Judy Blake of Tonto Basin. John is survived by his two sons, John Mitchell of Florence and Ronnie (Trish) Mitchell of Round Mountain, Nevada; three stepsons, Fred (Buster) Goodwin of Kearny, David Goodwin of Dudleyville, Larry (Sheri) Goodwin of Kearny; two stepdaughters, Norma Martinez of Globe, Sue Welch of Mesa; four natural grandchildren, Nanette Gilpin of New Mexico, William Arnold of Phoenix, Ronnie Mitchell of Florence and Megan Mitchell of Round Mountain Nevada; two step-grandchildren, Robert Smith of Globe and Ashley (Daniel) Curiel of Round Mountain, Nevada and numerous greatgrandchildren. pouring bullets for the black powder rifle. His hobbies included reloading and gunsmithing, for which he was very skilled. He was also known for his exceptional knifemaking. He gave one of his hand-crafted knives to an uncle, who said it was the only knife he had ever seen that could skin a moose without resharpening. Many friends and family were recipients of his talent. A special thank you goes out to his wonderful niece, Amie Olson, who was by his side, daily, with her ray-of-sunshine smile, as she tirelessly advocated for his care and well-being. Copper area school safety in the wake of Sandy Hook By Chase Kamp Copper Area News The fallout from the tragic Dec. 20 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut on resonated across the country. Eastern Pinal education leaders, parents and law enforcement are evaluating how to best prevent such an incident from occurring close to home. The most promising solution has been the implementation of school resource officers, or SROs: sworn law enforcement officials that not only serve as armed security, administrators say, but aid in reducing crime and drastically changing school culture through classes and training offered to students and faculty. However, SRO programs in the area, which are funded through grants from the state Department of Education, have been cut in the last few years due to statewide budget shortfalls and educating funding crunches. Pete Guzman, Superin-
tendent of Superior Unified School District, said his district was very fortunate to receive the services of PCSO deputy Paul Licano as an SRO a few years ago. The SRO served the local elementary school but was primarily stationed the JuniorSenior High School, where he proved very helpful in reducing behavioral incidents for older students. “[Having an SRO] does help the discipline and it did make a lot of difference,” Guzman said. Not only was the SRO highly visible on campus patrols and assisted with disciplinary actions, he explained, but he also taught a popular law enforcement class that counted as career and technical education credit. “I think he made a very positive impact on our kids,” Guzman said. Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu has joined a number of state leaders in proposing ideas to bolster school safety in the wake of Sandy Hook. He and state Senator Rich

Crandall (R-Mesa) announced on Jan. 15 a $30 million dollar plan that aims to put a school resource officer in a third of Arizona’s schools. The proposal would provide $30 million to add nearly 300 SROs, $4.5 million to improve mental health assessment to pro-actively identify threats and $1.5 million to expand school guidance counseling. The proposal is one of several recently announced by Arizona lawmakers and government leaders. Crandall argued his and Babeu’s proposal is the most politically and fiscally feasible. The plan proposes to redirect Clean Elections excess funding through a ballot referral in 2014. In 2002, the passing of ballot Prop 301 guaranteed $7.8 million annually for SROs, but the state swept additional funding for the program in 2009, forcing many districts like Superior to drop their officers. However, a controversial aspect of the proposal would
also allow schools the option of training and arming select numbers of administrators and teachers for security purposes. Crandall said the majority of superintendents he has spoken with do not like the idea of arming teachers or administrators, but that the voluntary option would be available for schools that were unable to hire SROs. “We have 2,200 schools in Arizona and as much as we’d

like, we simply can’t fund an SRO in every school,” Crandall said. “I don’t want to arm a couple of teachers in every school, but what is the alternative?” Babeu argued. “We need a permanent funding source, since the general fund may be eliminated, yet the threat to our schools remains.” Guzman is among those school leaders that does not like the idea of arming administrators. “Our job is to protect the kids—that’s our number one priority,” he said, “but does that mean allowing arms in schools? I don’t think so.” Guzman is also not convinced that proposed action at the Capitol will help his district. “Just because they say they’re going to pour more money into grants doesn’t mean it’s going to be helpful to the rural areas,” Guzman argued. State grants for SROs are
distributed based on crime and behavioral report statistics. Guzman said bigger schools and districts were prioritized over smaller ones. “It’s the same old story,” he said, “The rural areas just get left out all the time. So what if they have more kids? It’s one kid that gets hurt that counts. Just because they’re in bigger areas doesn’t mean they should get more services.” For the time being, Superior USD has increased teacher supervision in the playground, ordered security cameras and tightened visitor requirements. The district has reviewed its crisis plan and sent copies to emergency personnel, also making it available for parents to comment upon. The schools plan to soon run emergency drills. “We’re trying to be more careful in everything we do,” Guzman said.

Margaret Gaston Day set for Feb. 10 in Kearny By Sam Hosler Kearny – Margaret Gaston, who for 24 years was an employee of the Town of Kearny, retired from her position as Interim Town Manager on Jan. 30. A host of present and former town employees as well as Mayor Sam Hosler, and all available Town Council members, hosted a reception for Margaret in the council chambers at Town Hall and presented her with gifts, including a plaque and a sculpted

long resident of the Copper Basin area. She was born in Ray and has lived in Hayden as well as Kearny. She is a graduate of Ray High School and Northern Arizona University. heavy equipment, including several stints on the garbage collection truck. For 16 of those years she served as Town Clerk. Her duties for the town included supervising all elections. In addition, she also became a large community presence, being active in the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, church activities and town and chamber-sponsored events. She also became an active member of Volunteers in Policing (VIPs). An accomplished pianist, she played regularly for Kearny Baptist Church and The Church of the Good Shepherd, where she continues playing on this day. Perhaps one of her favorite roles has been being the
parade chairman of so many events over the years. Her organizing skills are prodigious, and her attention to detail benefited the many parade participants and onlookers. Margaret was asked by the Town Council to take on the role of Interim Town Manager last year after the resignation of long-time Town Manager, Gary Eide. She accepted the position and has overseen all town employees and town business during a difficult time, including the drought which affected Kearny so deeply this past year. She has been ardent in seeking a solution to Kearny’s water problems, and, with the assistance rendered by ASARCO, has enabled several avenues toward a solution
to the problems. As she herself points out, Margaret’s retirement is only from her role as Town Manager. She plans to spend more time with her family, especially her grandchildren, and intends to renew her skills as a horseback rider. She intends to continue her active role in Kearny and the Copper Basin, especially with the Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club and her church pianist position. The celebration of Margaret Gaston Day on Sun., Feb. 10, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Elks Lodge is for all citizens. The buffet meal will be available throughout the three hour period. Margaret and her family hope that this will be a joyous day for all.

Showing the love for our senior citizens: Hayden Senior Center to host Valentine Luncheon By Nina Crowder There are amazing things that go on in the Copper Corridor. One perfect example is a traditional Valentine’s Luncheon at the Town of Hayden Senior Center located at 520 N. Velasco Road in Hayden. This year the Valentine’s Day Celebration will be held on Friday, Feb. 8, 2013 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Entertainment will be provided by Tom Chestnut, who’s singing, dancing and interaction with the crowd is delightful. Annie Hinojos, director of the center, has been working for the Pinal-Gila Council for Senior Citizens (PGCSC) since 1982 and thoroughly enjoys her job. Annie grew up in Hayden and remembers people she met when she was two years old, running around with her hair in pigtails. Annie says many of the people she met back then are her clients now. Taking pride in the work she does, Annie is a very compassionate person who strives to provide the upmost, caring services for the Senior Citizens of the Copper Basin area. Annie is also on the Community Action Board (CAP) for Gila County and on the Board for the Town of Winkelman. One of Annie’s co-workers described Annie as going above and beyond the call of duty. Annie along with her Administrative Assistant, Paula Romero, the area Case Manager, Lisa Martinez and Mr. Gambell, her longest volunteer, work diligently to assure that a good time will be had by all. Annie is very complimentary of her staff. When she is putting on an event such as the Valentine’s Day Celebra-
tion, there are many steps including, the processing of paperwork, purchasing the meal items, meal preparation, decorations of the Senior Center, goodie bags, purchasing items for goodie bags, preparing the goodie bags, arranging transportation for people who need it, arranging the entertainment, just touches the start of the “todo” list. Annie has minimal help including one volunteer, Gambell. At one time Annie said she had between 70 and 75 volunteers, but now she is down to just one. She would appreciate having other volunteers, but said people are soured because of having to pass a background check and fingerprint clearance, which would be paid for by PGCSC. This event will be a great way to start off the Valentine’s Holiday. The fantastic staff of PGCSC will be providing a nourishing lunch that will consist of green chili burros, garden salad with tomato wedges, corn medley, pinto beans and orange wedges. There will be raffles, goodies, chocolates, laughs, music and fun for all those in attendance! Give it a try and you don’t have to be a Senior Citizen to attend, the more the merrier! The PGCSC has six different holiday events every year, consisting of a Halloween Party, Thanksgiving Celebration, Christmas Party (including Santa Claus), Valentine’s Day, Easter Party and Mothers/Fathers Day Celebration. is the Pinal-Gila Council for Senior Citizens (PGCSC)? In 1965 Congress passed the Older American Act (OAA) to address the lack of community social services for older persons. OAA provides funding and authorizes an array of services from nutrition, home care, Respite, home delivered meals, mobility management, behavioral health, legal services and recently added is the tax aide. If you would like more information or have questions here is some helpful contact information: www. aoa.gov email: info@pgcsc. org or www.pgcsc.org. You can reach PGCSC at 1-800293-9393. Not only do they hold the six different holiday events during the year, but on a daily basis the Senior Center is open for lunch, the meal menu is put together by a state dietician, meals are prepped, cooked and presented. Food is delivered to homes on a weekly basis to approximately 115 homebound clients. The clients are given a hot meal on the day of delivery and four frozen meals. There are exceptions available if additional meals are needed. The meals are well rounded and healthy. The meals are delivered by Annie and her staff. The service area they are responsible for is Eagle Crest, SaddleBrooke, Oracle Junction, Oracle, San Manuel, Redington, Mammoth, Dudleyville, Winkelman, Hayden, KearnySilver Springs, Superior and Dripping Springs. Lisa Martinez is the Case Manager for the Pinal-Gila Council. For five years now she has been the person who
evaluates the home situations and works closely with Annie to process the appropriate paperwork for the help that will be provided to the client. Client criteria consists of the clients to be at least 60 years of age and functionally impaired or disabled individuals 18 to 59 years of age who have a diagnosed disability that substantially limits an individual’s ability to perform activities of daily living. Once a client makes a call asking about the services available, Lisa will go out and assess the needs and make her suggestions. Meals can be provided as quickly as seven days once the paperwork is processed. The initial assessment takes about two hours; then a yearly assessment will occur along with reviews every three months. The personal care, attendant care, home meals, minor home repair, caregiver support, routine housekeeping, transportation, legal and tax help are just a few of the services available. The purpose of the PinalGila Council for Senior Citizens (PGCSC) is to assist people achieve and maintain self sufficiency with dignity and to offer choices of appropriate care by providing a wide range of community and home services. In my opinion this organization is a wealth of information and here to help! If you would like to donate any items for the goodie bags, you can take them to Annie at the Hayden Senior Center. recipient’s tax burden, and encourages employment. This year, taxpayers with dependents must have had less than $51,000 in 2012 income and with no dependents, less than $25,000 in 2012 income. The credit may be worth between $2 and $5,666 depending on the taxpayer’s individual circumstances. “The EITC is a valuable but somewhat complicated tax break for workers with modest incomes,” said Frances Ortez, VITA program manager at United Way of Pinal County. “Many people need, but can’t afford certified assistance to claim it. That is when free tax preparation assistance at VITA sites can be a tremendous saver.” Past IRS estimates were that twenty to twenty-five percent of qualifying taxpayers failed to claim this credit which helps struggling households catch up on utility bills, rent, and to afford car maintenance among other uses. This is especially true in rural communities, for taxpayers that are self-employed, and those who qualify without dependent children. Increased VITA awareness efforts which began in

Ray ‘Cats head into playoffs with 22-5 record Fans at Monday’s nonleague challenge between the Ray Bearcats and
the host Canyon State Academy Rams saw Ray’s basketball squad overcome
Canyon State Academy by a score of 67-59. With the victory, Ray improved its record to 20-5 on the campaign. The ‘Cats then turned around and nipped the host Fort Thomas Apaches 6054 in Thursday’s league test putting their record at 21-5. Ray scored 58 points and held the visiting San Manuel Miners to 46 in the Bearcats non-league
triumph on Friday. The team entertained the Seniors Night crowd with an exciting game including three dynamic dunks by senior Erik Goodwin. The Bearcats now sport a 22-5 record as they head into the playoffs. The team will open play in the first round of sectionals against San Miguel at Cienega at 7:30 p.m. this evening.

Church to host pancake supper Church of the Good Shepherd will hold its annual Pancake Supper at Ray Hall, at the bottom of School Hill. It will be held on Tuesday, February 12, from 5pm to 7pm. This year’s proceeds will go to “Imagine No Malaria”. The Pancake Supper is always a joyful event. It is held on Shrove Tuesday, which is also called Fat Tuesday. This is a traditional day for getting rid of fats and sugars from the home in preparation for the six weeks of Lent. Eating the rich foods gives the day a party-like atmosphere. The all-you-can-eat pancakes are well known for being light, fluffy and delicious. Combining the fund raiser with the pancakes makes a fun and filling way for the whole community to help eliminate malaria, which kills a person every minute.
