September 15, 1943 - November 6, 2013

Gloria Jauregui, 70, entered into eternal rest on Nov. 6, 2013 in California.

She was born Sept. 15, 1943 in Arizona.

She leaves behind her husband, Joe Jauregui; an aunt and uncle, Luz and Jacob Kame; and many cousins in the local area.

Services for Mrs. Jauregui were held Wednesday, Nov. 13 at the Little Country Chapel, Pierce Brothers Valhalla, California. Interment followed at Pierce Brothers Valhalla Memorial Park, California.

Vondell Constant passed away Friday, Dec. 6, 2013.

Services were held at Kearny Church of Christ on Sunday, Dec. 15, at 2 pm.

Visitation and graveside services were held Monday, Dec. 16, at Mountain View Funeral Home and Cemetery, 7900 E Main Street, Mesa, Arizona.

She will be missed by all her family and friends.

Kearny Police Report According to state law, there are two methods by which police may arrest suspected offenders. The suspect may be physically taken into the department and booked into jail, or the arresting officer may write a citation and release the suspect to appear in court later.

Georgie Digs ... A Creekside Story –

By Georgiana Wood Special to Copper Area News Kearny - I am really looking forward to what I hope is the last revision of my manuscript “A Creekside Story”; but, at this time, I want to make the following available to those ranchers and farmers who might be interested.

From its original 40 acres of land, deeded in 1921, my husband, Clifford Wood’s family, had developed their ranch that had, eventually, become the larger Wood Brothers

by Clifford, his brother Fred, and their wives, and whose headquarters was located along the western end of Aravaipa Creek in Pinal County, not far downstream of that area of Aravaipa Canyon that, in 1966, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) wanted to set aside as a National Scenic Recreation Area, and what became the Aravaipa Canyon Primitive Area in Jan. of 1969.

Of course, this greatly affected us because of the many people who first came

through our property to enter the inner canyon, the “Box”, although we hadn’t allowed any vehicular traffic going upstream. We really felt that all we needed was good health, good rains, decent cattle prices, not going broke, and certainly not being pressured by those who wanted to change everything!

We had the chance to sell the ranch to a developer, who wanted to subdivide it, which we didn’t want; so, in 1970, we sold the ranch to The Nature Conservancy (TNC). It wasn’t long before TNC’s mortgage was assumed by the Defenders of Wildlife (DOW), who appointed Edward Abbey as “coordinating custodian” on that property where the Clifford and Fred Wood families were still living

for a while, with certain stipulations. Edward Abbey has been described as an American author and essayist noted for his advocacy of environmental issues, criticism of public land policies, and anarchist political views. We also met Abbey’s friend, Douglas Peacock, who has been described as an American naturalist, outdoorsman, and author. In 1974, the DOW property was named “The George Whittell Wildlife Preserve” in memory of the man whose money made the Preserve and the acquirement of other properties possible, and eventually there were no cattle left on the Panorama Ranch range and the windmills stood still. In August of 1984, the Aravaipa Canyon Primitive

Area became the Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness Area, on on May 22, 1986, Edward Abbey wrote the following in a letter to me and Cliff, who had been living downstream since 1973. : “I hear from Douglas that you people were offended, maybe even hurt, by some of the things I said in that article about the beef industry that was reprinted in the Arizona Star. Well, I can’t blame you and I’m not surprised. I was attacking the beef industry (and the wool growers); I really would like to see the domestic livestock eventually removed from our public lands -- especially the national parks, national forests, and national (BLM) rangelands -- where other uses, such as hunting, fishing, human

recreation, and habitat for wildlife-- seem to me more important and in conflict with the traditional grazing business.

But the beef industry tends to hide behind the great American love affair with the cowboy; therefore I could not resist the temptation to poke a little fun at the Marlboro Man and the old cowboy image. My notion of “fun”, I suppose, looks like ridicule to some, and I can understand why some of my friends (not ex-friends, I hope) were annoyed by my remarks.

It would do no good to apologize for what I said about cowboys and ranchers. Too late to take it all back or eat my words.

Florence Copper is not a traditional

By Mila Besich Lira Copper Area News Arizona’s economy was founded on the five C’s, climate, cattle, citrus, cotton and copper, and it is very true that the community of Florence has contributed at least four of the five C’s over the past 101 years of statehood.

Sitting right in the Town of Florence is a copper mine, the fifth C in Arizona’s economy.

Mining isn’t necessarily foreign to Florence, the community has several sand, rock, gravel and granite mines in the area however the community’s economic roots and history lie in government, corrections and ranching.

When one thinks of a copper mine, many may think to the mines of the past, slag piles, tailings and black smoke flowing into the sky from a smelter. Someone may envision huge dump trucks and massive holes in the ground, or maybe think of dark caverns where miners work in extreme heat in the depths of the earth. The copper mine is Florence is not your

traditional copper mine, it isn’t even a mine of the future, in fact the operation does not fall under the Mine Safety Health Administrations regulations for a mine. The in-situ mine is monitored by the same environmental agencies such as the Federal Environmental Protection Agency and the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality as a traditional mine but is classified as a water treatment facility because the surface of the Earth is never broken. The Occupational Health and Safety Administration monitors the working conditions of the operation, because it not considered a mine.

The process of mining copper via the in-situ method is somewhat of a simple process, the company will use a series of wells to inject a water based solution into the ground to break up the minerals and extract the copper. The solution injected into the ore body is 99.5 percent water and .5 percent sulfuric acid. “It is the strength of household vinegar,” explained

Loren Locher the communications director for Florence Copper. The solution breaks up the mineral and allows it be pumped to the surface through a continuous loop system. The in-situ method can be used for this particular mine due to the geology of the rock, it does not need to be blasted or crushed to retrieve the ore.

The continuous loop system also aids in the re-use of water and the wells will be constructed to protect the aquifers in the area to ensure there is no contamination of the water supply. “This project gives me no environmental heartburn,” Locher said. The company will be required to follow very strict guidelines and monitoring to ensure that environment and water supply will be protected. Unlike traditional mines, this type of in-situ mining operation will be reclaimed as the ore body is mined. Once the areas are completely mined the wells will be closed and the land will be revegetated to its native appearance. Traditional mines are required to reclaim their operations upon closure, leaving the areas blighted until mining no longer

exists.

applied for their environmental permits to operate their test facility. Florence Copper officials reported earlier this month that they are one permit shy from operating the test facility on their property. That permit is the Underground Injection Control Permit which is approved by the Environmental Protection Agency. The company expects for the permit to be approved in early 2014. This final permit will allow the company to begin operating their phase one test facility for nine years on the 160 acres of State Trust Land that Florence Copper has the mineral rights to.

A recent economic study conducted by the L. William Seidman Research Institute at Arizona State University reported that the project will create 2.2 billion dollars in economic activity in the State of Arizona over the next 28 years. The project is expected to create 170 direct jobs in Florence with another 681 jobs being created throughout Arizona. Recently the company has joined Central Arizona Regional Economic Development Foundation and Arizona Forward, both groups have a

mission of developing sustainable economic development. “We believe that our vision for the future is closely aligned with the missions of both Arizona Forward and CAREDF, and we are looking forward to being actively involved with these groups as they continue to grow and improve the Pinal County region,” explained Locher.

One of the only typical characteristics that Florence Copper has with a new or traditional mine is its ability to attract some kind of opposition. The Florence Copper Project has received opposition. Residents in the local area fear water contamination. They also fear that the project will have adverse affects on home values. The Florence Town Council voted to affect eminent domain on the property that is owned by Curis in the town limits. The town reports that they need access to that property to Copper, Page 16

Scholarships awarded

On Dec. 13, the Pinal Mountain Foundation for Higher Education awarded 14 scholarships totaling $6,400 to students attending Gila Community College’s Gila Pueblo Campus in Globe and San Carlos Campus for the spring 2014 which starts Jan. 8.

The scholarships awarded include funds from Pinal Mountain Foundation for Higher Education Scholarship Fund, Elder Quality of Life Scholarship Fund, the Freeport McMoRan Scholarship Fund, the Shawn Boxell Memorial Scholarship Fund, the Scott Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund, Walmart Scholarship Fund, and the Native American Book Fund.

Hayden Senior Center holds successful

13, 2013. Annie Hinojos, director of Pinal-Gila Council for Senior Citizens (PGCSC), spoke with the seniors in attendance and thanked everyone for coming out and

helping make this event successful. Entertainment was provided by Tom Chestnut, who’s singing, dancing and interaction with the crowd was truly an inspiration! Tom

Annie grew up in Hayden and remembers people she met when she was two years old, running around with her hair in pig-tails. Annie says many of the people she met back then are her clients now.

Taking pride in the work she does, Annie is a very compassionate person who strives to provide the upmost, caring services for the Senior Citizens of the Copper Basin area. Annie along with her Administrative Assistant, Paula Romero, the area Case Manager, Lisa Martinez and a few others work diligently to assure that a good time is had by all. Annie is involved in many areas of the community and looks forward to her continued efforts for the Copper Basin areas.

Bearcats win big at Superior, lose heartbreaker to Duncan

By Richard Bravo Copper Basin News The Ray High School boy’s basketball team split games this week posting a win on Wednesday against the Superior Panthers and losing a thriller against the Duncan Wildkats on Saturday.

The Bearcats won the Wednesday contest against Superior, 62-41. The Bearcats were led by shooting guard Quentin Camacho who scored a game high 27 points. Dominic Bravo added 18 points to help the Bearcats cruise to a 21-point victory.

In the second game of the week, the Bearcats traveled to Duncan to take on the Wildkats who have two of the top scoring guards in Division IV, Daniel Corona and Cale Merrel. Head coach Jeff Cude relied on shooting guards Camacho and Bravo to slow the duo down. They both succeeded

holding the Wildkats leading scorers to season lows in points.

The game was an exciting one from opening tip-off with both teams trading baskets in the first two periods. The Wildkats had a slim 34-30 lead at the half. The game became more intense in the last two periods as both teams came out of the locker room determined to win.

Both teams scored a total of 20 points in the third period with the Wildkats holding on to a 54-50 lead headed into the final period of play.

In the final period of play the Bearcats stayed close with big baskets coming from Camacho and Bravo, but it would be free throws that kept them in the game. With just two minutes to play Joe Rudy Lorona hit a pair of free throws to tie the game at 62 a piece. Point guard Eli Cude helped the Bearcats take their first lead of the half

when he stole the ball and found Camacho under the basket for an assist. This gave the Bearcats a 64-62 lead with a minute left. After a missed shot and an offensive rebound by the Wildkats Corona was fouled by Bravo sending their best free throw shooter to the line. Corona sunk both shots to tie it up with 12 seconds left on the clock. Point guard Cude then took the inbound pass down the court and was fouled on his way to the basket with just 3 seconds on the clock. With the crowd screaming at the top of their lungs point guard Cude calmly sank both free throws.

These free throws seemed to seal the game for the Bearcats, but with 3 seconds remaining Corona took the inbound pass and drove just passed halfway court and threw up a desperation shot. The shot banked off the glass and went in before the buzzer sounded shocking the Bearcats

69-66.

The Bearcats were led by Camacho who had a team high 34 points going 6 for 6 from the line. Bravo added 18 points and Cude chipped in with 10 points.

The Bearcats traveled to Cibecue on Tuesday scores will be updated in next week’s paper.

Lady Bearcats end losing streak with win against Panthers

By Andrew Luberda Copper Basin News The Ray Bearcats girls’ basketball team ended its four-game losing streak by beating the Superior Panthers, 35 – 26. It was the ‘Cats third victory of the

year.

The Bearcats trailed the Panthers by three points at the half and the teams were tied, 21 – 21, at the end of three quarters. The ‘Cats took control in the fourth quarter by outscoring the

Panthers 14 – 5 to earn the win.

Sophomore Stormee Galka remained sidelined from injury and did not play, leaving the rest of the team to pick up the slack in her absence. Sidney Chenoweth continued her solid play and

led the ‘Cats with 11 points while senior Breauna Hathaway added nine points.

Sophomore Savannah Willis finished with eight points.

The Bearcats will next play at Cibecue on December 17, 2013 at 5:30.

Pinal County Cinderella Pageant planned Every young lady dreams of becoming “Cinderella”, and for one night her dreams can come true. Now is the time for any young lady who resides in Pinal County to enter the “NUMBER ONE” youth development program of its kind in the world. The first annual preliminary is scheduled for Feb. 8, 2014, and will be held at the Ray District Auditorium in Kearny, AZ. The Cinderella Scholarship Program is divided into five

age divisions: Cinderella Tot (3-6 years); Miniature Miss (7-9 years); Cinderella Miss (10-12 years); Cinderella Teen (13-17 years) and Cinderella Woman (18-26). Participants all age divisions are judged on poise and personality, while modeling sportswear and party wear. The older four divisions are also judged on talent presentations.

Cinderella Tots are judged on an on stage interview called “Tot Personality”. The judges, who will have an

opportunity to evaluate their poise, confidence, grooming, and communicative skills up close, also interview all age divisions.

Overall Cinderella winners, Cinderella Girls, Talent/Tot Personality and Photogenic winners receive their $80 entry fee returned as a scholarship by the local pageant, to attend the 2014 Arizona State Finals in Tucson, AZ in June. They also all win crowns, banners, trophies and awards.

Cinderella is the #1 program of its kind. Arizona Overall Cinderella’s receive a $1000 cash scholarship, $500 college award, educational trip, Disneyland vacation, luggage and many other prizes during their reigning year. This dream can come true for any girl, big or small.

All girls who enter received participation awards and invitations to attend the State Finals. Cinderella is a youth development program focusing on building self-

esteem, confidence and pride in the young ladies who come and “Dare to Dream”.

By Santa Claus Special to Copper Area News North Pole - It’s that time of year, again, when I receive letters from young people, who write to me from every land on the planet, sharing their good wishes and hopes for special presents. As you know, I have a special place in my heart for the children in the Copper Corridor and greatly enjoy their letters. They are so special, that I want to share them with their friends and family.

On Dec. 3, Florence Copper Inc. filed a Notice of Claim arising from the Town of Florence’s eminent domain action from earlier this year.

The Notice of Claim values Florence Copper at $403 million, based on thirdparty valuation completed

by Deloitte LLP, one of the world’s largest and most respected accounting and financial advisory firms.

State law requires parties that have been damaged by a government’s action to file a claim within 180 days of the harmful act. The Florence Town Council passed an ordinance last spring seeking to take nearly 1,200 acres of Florence Copper Inc.’s private land for “public facilities” including a proposed wastewater treatment facility.

In October, the town filed a lawsuit in Pinal County to initiate the attempted taking of Florence Copper’s private property.

The Town of Florence remains committed to its opposition of the project in a recent press release. Jess Knudson, Florence assistant town manager, dismissed the notice of claim as grandstanding: “The whole point of the existing lawsuit is to determine whether Curis has any right to compensation, and, if so, in what amount.

The only reason to file a $403 million notice of claim saying you have a right to compensation in that amount is to grab headlines.”

“We would like to continue to work diligently to develop a relationship with the Town of Florence, have a meaningful conversation, create a development agreement and go forward,” explained Locher “But, we cant get a dialog.”

After learning about PGCSC and the Older American Act, the services that are available are wonderful, and all of the work that Annie Hinojos, Paula Romero and Lisa Martinez provide are simply amazing. Not only do they hold the six different holiday events during the year, but on a daily basis the senior center is open for lunch. The meal menu is put together by a state dietician, meals are prepped, cooked and presented. Food is delivered to homes on a weekly basis to approximately 115 homebound clients. The meals are delivered by Annie and her staff. The service area they are responsible for is Eagle Crest, SaddleBrooke, Oracle Junction, Oracle, San Manuel, Redington, Mammoth, Dudleyville, Winkelthrough its fields. It is so very sad to see.

I certainly wish the best for all hard-working and dedicated ranchers and farmers, who are good stewards on their lands, as we were, despite having so much to put up with.
