T.J. Griffin

February 5, 1936 - November 28, 2013 T.J. Griffin, 76, passed on to the big fishing hole in the sky on Nov. 28, 2013.

He was born Feb. 5, 1936.

In his last days, T.J. could not talk much but he made the motion of casting and

reeling in, and told his loved ones he wanted to go fishing. “We cry at saying good-bye. We know his pain is no more. It is easier to just say, Dad’s gone fishing.”

Gilbert Salinas Carnighan, 80, passed away Nov. 29, 2013 in Fullerton, CA. He was born March 5, 1933 to John and Nasaria Carnighan in Tiger, AZ. He was raised in Mammoth and attended high school in Florence.

Gilbert served in the United States Army from Sept. 14, 1953 to Aug. 14, 1961. He served in the United States Navy from Aug. 31, 1967 to Feb. 29, 1980. Before and in between his service to the country, he worked for Magma Copper Company.

During the time of his service in the Navy, he met the love of his life, Lorna Bristow. They married and had three sons.

Gilbert was preceded in death by his wife, Lorna.

He is survived by his sons, Mark, Robin and Jerome Carnighan, all of

Gilbert Salinas Carnighan Fullerton, CA; sister, Dora Mendoza; five nieces; and many friends from the TriCommunity.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, Dec. 13, at 11 a.m. at the Valley View Cemetery in Mammoth, AZ.

Pinal County completes one year of success reducing prescription drug abuse; drug disposal box dedicated

Florence - In November, to celebrate the first year of the Arizona Prescription Drug Misuse and Abuse Initiative in Pinal County, the Arizona Criminal Justice Commission, Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu, Pinal County Attorney Lando Voyles, Arizona Substance Abuse Partnership and the Pinal County Substance Abuse Council met to share statistics regarding the success of the program.

Designed as a multi-agency collaborative approach to reduce drug abuse in Arizona, the Initiative operates in three pilot counties: Yavapai, Pinal and Graham/Greenlee. currently operates in three pilot counties – Yavapai, Pinal and Graham/Greenlee

- currently, and will be introduced into additional counties in the second phase of the Initiative.

ACJC credited experts from law enforcement, the prevention field and medical community, who participated in the development of the Initiative and creation of a set of data- and researchdriven strategies.

There are five key strategies which these counties strive to achieve: reducing acquisition and diversion of prescription medication, education of prescribers and pharmacists, enhancing prescription drug practice and policies in law enforcement, increasing public awareness about the risks of prescription drug misuse; and building a resilience in children and adults.

Most notably, the public may recognize this initiative as it relates to the prescription drug drop-off box program, which has deployed 16 boxes that are currently operational throughout the county including at the Kearny Police Department and the Pinal Rural Fire Rescue station in Mammoth, and has collected 1,800 pounds of prescription medications, so far, in six take-back events.

Other accomplishments include Casa Grande Regional Medical Center, Banner Ironwood and Florence Hospital at Anthem implementing Emergency Department Guidelines; over 350 prescribers receiving quarterly report cards; and 75 professionals having received comprehensive “Best Practice” training or door-to-door approach The Initiative reaches out to educate the public. 201 Law Enforcement Officers have received Rx Crimes

curriculum. 1,951 youth and 441 adults have received the Rx360 curriculum. 5,096 people have been reached via community events.

Over 175,749 people have been reached via public messaging and media methods Pinal County Attorney Lando Voyles said, “Nearly an entire ton of unused and unnecessary prescription pills no longer pose a danger for abuse in our county. The significance of the number of incidents of accidental overdose and with reports linking abuse of prescription medications to heroin use – one report from Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration stating those who abuse are 19 times more likely to use – provide insight as to the importance of the success of this initiative.

Pinal families benefit from knowing how to properly and safely store and dispose of unused prescriptions and doctors, pharmacists and law enforcement possess new tools and training to improve prevention and reduce abuse.”

Sheriff Paul Babeu said, “According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, deaths from drug overdose and abuse now exceed deaths from motor vehicle accidents in the United States. Elected officials and community leaders should be doing all we can to help address this national problem.

Unneeded and unwanted prescription drugs need to be kept out of the hands of our children. Having Prescription Drug DropOff Boxes conveniently available to citizens throughout the year will have a tremendous impact on this problem.”

Dec. 2 Daniel J. Stephenson, 57, Dudleyville, was

arrested in the 300 block of Alden Rd., Kearny, and was charged with residing within 1000 feet of a grade school and failing to register as a sex offender. He was transported and booked into the Pinal County Jail.

Dec. 4 Lawrence Eugene White, 21, Dudleyville, was arrested in the Dudleyville area and was charged with criminal damage. He was transported and booked into the Pinal County Jail.

represent off-road trail-riding enthusiasts of Southern Arizona. The club belongs to the Arizona Motorcycle Riders Association (AMRA) which is a non-profit, volunteer-run association made up of eight statewide off-road motorcycle clubs.

Like AMRA, TRS’ intent is to promote a positive off-road motorcycling experience. Each year the AMRA organizes Arizona’s premier off-road motorcycle championship series (which includes the San Manuel Copper Classic), intent on providing high quality, fun and safe off-road racing for Race, Page 12

Ray School District’s Christmas concert set for December 18, 7 pm

Kearny - On Wednesday, Dec. 18, at 7 p.m. the Ray Unified School District Band program will be holding its Winter Festival Concert in the auditorium, featuring age-old favorites by famous composers and a few giving honor to the American military.

The program starts with Ray Elementary School Fifth Grade Band performing Shoo Fly, Good King Wenceslas, Jolly Ol’ Saint Nicholas, and Jingle Bells.

Following, the Ray Elementary School Sixth Grade Band will play the Lone Star Waltz, Bavarian Folk Dance, Rocking Around the Christmas Tree, and Ode To Joy.

Then, the Ray Junior High School Concert Band will perform the Russian Sleigh Rock, Carol of the Bells, Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer, and Swingin’ Into Christmas.

Lastly, the Ray High School Wind Ensemble will perform You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch, Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!, Navy Hymn (Eternal Father Strong To Save), A Tribute to the men and women of the USS Arizona – December 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor, Hawai’i, Country Gardens, A Charlie Brown Celebration and Sleigh Ride.

Winter Wonderland a great success in spite of cold weather With Jack Frost nipping at everyone’s noses, parts of Kearny Saturday were transformed into a Winter Wonderland with games, music performances and a light parade that drove the dark from the night.

It also heralded the opening of the Christmas season for residents of the Copper Basin Area with the arrival of Mr. and Mrs. S. Claus with help from the pilots of Native Air and the volunteers of the Kearny Fire Department. Children of all ages were able to tell the famous couple all of their Christmas dreams and wishes.

Kids of all ages got to visit with the couple throughout the afternoon until it was time for the parade to start. With crafts, music and a Smurfs movie to watch, there was something for everyone.

Community Schools Flag Football comes to Hayden

By Nina Crowder Copper Basin News Community Schools Flag Football came to Hayden this past Saturday where over 20 football teams from Mammoth, San Manuel, Oracle, Hayden and Kearny along with their cheer squads met for an exciting day of flag football action. Age groups were kindergarten/ down, first/second grades, third/fourth grades and fifth/sixth grades. All teams were coached by volunteers of the communities and it has been an exciting season to date.

Delicious concessions were available at the games and proceeds benefited the program of that schools choice. There are two more opportunities to watch some fun filled flag football. On Thursday night in San Manuel games begin under the lights at 5 p.m. With the championships being held in San Manuel this Saturday starting at 9 a.m. This will be a single elimination tournament.

There are over 200 students involved in the flag football and cheer squad programs. Over 1,000 people attended the flag football event this past Saturday throughout the course of the day. These programs allow the youth in our communities to learn about teamwork, sportsmanship and responsibility at an early age. They also teach the youth to compete with each other in a skillful and supervised environment.

Thank you to everyone who has volunteered and participated this season!

Kearny Elks hold annual Hoop Shoot On Saturday, Dec. 07, 2013, the Kearny Elks Lodge hosted their 41st annual Local Hoop Shoot Contest. The first place winners will continue on to the district contest to be held at Ray High School Gym on Saturday, Jan. 4 beginning at 10 a.m.

In first place for the 8 and 9-year-old girls was Amariz Ochoa from Hayden/Winkelman schools, and in second place was Keyara O’Neil From Ray schools. In first place in the 8 and 9-year-old boys was Moreas Cruz from Hayden/Winkelman, and second place was Hunter Day from Ray. In the 10 and 11 girls first place was Brianna Goad from Ray, and Ahleah Arbizo in second from Hayden/Winkelman. In the 10 and 11-year-old boys first place went to Derek Figueroa from Ray, and in second place was Alexander Goad from Ray. First place girl in the 12 to 13-year-old division went to Myranda Figueroa from Ray, and in second place was Jaden Gonzales from Hayden. In the 12 and 13-year-old boys first place went to Anthony Lopez from Hayden/Winkelman, and second place was Tino Barragan also from Hayden/Winkelman.

Congratulations to all of the shooters. The Kearny Elks is very proud of the young people in our two communities and would like to thank the parents for supporting our program. The Elks would also like to extend a big thank you to both schools for helping us with this great youth program. And to Asarco for donating, backpacks, totes, basketball and T-shirts to all of the children that participated in the local shoot.

Consensus: Creche display – ‘do it again next year’

By John Hernandez San Manuel Miner The second annual crèche (nativity) display held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in San Manuel was wonderful and inspirational this year.

Dorothy Staggs and her volunteers did another excellent job.

More than 600 nativity scenes were on display along with paintings and

wall hangings featuring the birth of Christ. There was even a western theme wreath made from barbed wire and metal. Many of the crèches were from other countries and there was one nativity scene that was a family heirloom and over 100 years old.

On Saturday, western entertainer and poet Jon Richins performed during the day. He entertained groups with his western humor, sang a few

western Christmas songs, and read some cowboy Christmas poetry.

There was a musical celebration and a Christmas devotional on Sunday evening with refreshments served at the end of the evening.

A few of the comments written in the visitors’ log by people who viewed the display included: “Inspirational,” “Cool, Awesome,” “Amazing,” and “Do it again next year.”

So just what is a Hare Scramble race? Per the American Motorcyclist Association’s (AMA) rule book, a Hare Scramble is a race conducted on a closed course, using trails and paths over natural terrain.

The course can be between two and a half and 40 miles in length. In the Copper Classic’s case, the distance is typically around 25 miles.

Course markings are used to aid the riders in determining the proper route when the terrain does not clearly dictate direction. The racer’s objective is to navigate the race course as fast as possible for as many as three laps.

As in past years, the race will be staged out of the old middle school ball fields at the end of Erickson Street.

The mini rider’s race will begin after 8 a.m., with the big bike race starting around noon. The start and finish lines will be near the staging area and spectator viewing is strongly encouraged.

But the San Manuel Copper Classic is not just about racing. TRS hosts this event as a fundraiser for the local school board. After each race, TRS typically donates $500 to $1,000 to the school board to support extracurricular activities. An additional economic benefit of this race is the amount of business the racers and spectators bring to the shops and restaurants of San Manuel.

So mark your calendars today for the first of February 2014 for the San Manuel Copper Classic.

Lady ‘Cats cruise past Scottsdale Christian; drop three games

By Andrew Luberda Copper Basin News The Ray Bearcats’ girls’ basketball team jumped out to a 17-point first quarter lead on its way to 47 – 29 victory over Scottsdale Christian on December 5, 2013.

The ‘Cats were led by sophomore Savannah Willis and junior Sidney Chenoweth with 18 and 12 points scored, respectively. The 47 points scored by the Bearcats was their second highest scoring total of the season.

A total of eight players scored for the ‘Cats in game.

Ashley Meza, Breauna Hathaway, Elissa Rodriguez, Christina Correll, Destiny Guerena, and Allysa Setelo all tallied at least one point.
