November 2015
Join us each week as we explore our wonderful state on KMOS Presents: Missouri Life. Page 12.
Since making changes to Contact last month, we have received many comments ranging from “love the grids!” and “what’s on during the day?” to “I miss the yummy bits that describe the shows.” We appreciate all of your feedback and will use it in the months to come as we continue to improve your member guide. Likewise, we welcome your comments on the programming changes. When you see the new schedule in the evenings and on weekends, please know that it is because we seek to find a balance in keeping with traditions while attracting new viewers and members to KMOS. We appreciate your feedback and patience during this process as well. Regarding Channel 6.3 - which changed when we switched program providers from MHz Worldview to the WORLD Channel. You may recall from previous issues of Contact that MHz Worldview planned to remove the international mysteries in July, which gave us time to reflect on the overall quality of the service, and our frustration over the fact that we are not allowed time to insert local shows or breaks in the program stream. When they announced a delay in their plan, we considered the fact that viewer comments overwhelmingly in favor of mysteries suggested that it was worth trying the new service in their absence. The jury remains out on this question, and we will share updates as they are available. Michael O’Keefe Program Director

General Manager’s Message Every Thanksgiving, I sit with my family and we talk about what we are thankful for in our lives. In my role at KMOS, I have something new to add this year. I am thankful for you. Over the past 35 years, Viewers Like You, and maybe even you yourself, have been very loyal to KMOS. You have supported us in making quality, thoughtful programming available to all citizens in Central Missouri. You have brought kids friends like Mr. Rogers, Ernie and Bert, Maya and Miguel, and now this month we add Nature Cat. You have helped Ken Burns document the history of jazz, baseball, WWII, the Civil War, the Roosevelts, and in 2016, the war in Vietnam. Phil Hoffman GM & Director You have made it possible for thousands of school children to receive phoffman@ucmo.edu free books through KMOS’ involvement in First Book. You have Twitter @kmosdrphil 660-543-4127 helped us work with public schools throughout our viewing area to support teachers and provide free curriculum resources. More recently, you have made possible our new “Your Thursday” lineup. This includes our new partnership with Missouri Life magazine that resulted in “KMOS Presents: Missouri Life.” And our partnership with KCPT in Kansas City that resulted in “Arts Upload.” All focused on our backyard, bringing new local programming to KMOS. And of course: Downton Abbey on Masterpiece Classic. You made that possible. The fact that KMOS still is vibrant and alive today is thanks to your support. So as you celebrate the month of November, just know that we here at KMOS want to say Thank You. We’re grateful for your continued support. We’ll do our best to continue making KMOS worthy of your support.
Why Become A Member of KMOS? Every time you come to KMOS you’re in for an extraordinary experience. It’s an experience that fulfills your need for learning, growth and joy … an experience that broadens your exposure to fascinating people, cultures and ideas … an experience that’s smart, distinctive and just for you. One day it’s an in-depth view of the life and legacy of Walt Disney in American Masters … another day is the breathtaking cinematography of Gorongosa Park on Nature … and sometimes it’s a truly inimitable character on Masterpiece or Mystery! that Nicole Hume strikes your fancy. And always, it’s the faces, voices, and stories of Membership/Major Gifts newsmakers, thinkers, and everyday people who have compelling hume@ucmo.edu stories to tell. 660-543-4010 It is a fact that KMOS provides you with programs that are ranked highly by viewers and educators - specifically the #1 educational media brand, and the most fair coverage when it comes to investigations and discussions of major issues. Viewers turn most frequently to KMOS for arts and cultural programming and nowhere else can you find the doors flung open to the world 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Visit a local factory that manufactures gun stocks made from walnut trees grown in the U.S.A, sit down for a meal at the Common Ground cafe in historic downtown Warsaw, and then travel back in time by train and steamboat at the 1850’s Village Museum. Take a musical detour to Cole Camp to celebrate German music with local and regional choirs at the Saengerfest, returning to Warsaw to meet James Mahlon White, publisher of the Benton County Enterprise.
Lebanon
Learn what is involved in raising alpacas at the Whirlwind Ranch, sit down for a bite at T’s Redneck Steakhouse, and travel through the backroads of history at the Route 66 Museum. With its proximity to Fort Leonard Wood, Lebanon is home to Wagons for Warriors, an event featuring Western-prepared food and vintage vehicles in support of local Wounded Warriors. We wrap up our visit in waders as we meet the founder of Jim Rogers Fly School.
Macon
Join in the fun of wine-making at the West Winery, sample the menu of a restaurant born of fire at AJ’s Eat and Drink. The Steakhouse, delve into the living history of Macon County, and see how the town supports the arts through the Boots and Black Tie event at Maples Repertory Theatre. Art is alive in the work of Nyle Douglas Gordon, who credits life on the farm for providing an environment for contemplation and creativity.

November 2015
Each program begins with a profile of a business that is recognized throughout the region or beyond, and ends with a reflective look at iconic views of the town. In-between, KMOS Presents: Missouri Life talks with notable citizens and community leaders. Together, we are proud to celebrate all that makes Missouri unique.
Hermann
Explore the vineyards and restaurants to meet the people who make, and who enjoy tasty wines at Stone Hill Winery and the award-winning meats at the Wurst Haus. Visit the historic Hermann Farm & Museum overlooking the Missouri River, celebrate spring with your friends at the 63rd annual Maifest and meet sculptor Joey Los in her shop.
Columbia
You’ll find Logboat Brewing Company, which takes its name from the historic mode of transportation in this riverrich region. The Wine Cellar and Bistro in downtown Columbia is known for its “seed-to-table” menu featuring local organic products. We recognize some of the many Missourians have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country at Memorial Union, and then experience tastes of central Missouri at the Columbia Farmers Market. Meet Paul Jackson, whose art can be seen at many public buildings and museums.
“We love the synergy that a magazine along with a television show can have.” - Danita Allen Wood Missouri Life Editor-in-Chief
Warrensburg
A team of experts at Quimby Pipe Organs, Inc. helps to lift the hearts and spirits of w orshippers and music lovers throughout the country - peek behind the pipes to see how organs are built and restored locally. Take a break at the award-winning Café Blackadder to enjoy fresh locallysourced food, then settle into a seat in the historic Johnson County Courthouse for a re-enactment of the Old Drum trial to learn why a dog is man’s best friend. Step outside for the annual Old Drum Days street festival, then meet Stormy Taylor who shares with us her passion for the community and work for the Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Johnson County.
Lexington
We wind up this delightful first season in Lexington where we meet the family and animals on the Fahrmeier Farm, where you can pick your own produce and take a hay ride. Immerse yourself in the Big Muddy without getting wet at a local ice cream shop. Lexington’s history includes a three-day battle during the Civil War, centered around the battle-scarred Anderson House. Through a historic reenactment of the battle, we get a sense of what the soldiers experienced in the shootout at Big River, and then end our journey with Lexington Mayor Jerry Brown. kmos.org

Around Town Who Needs Math? On October 3, KMOS-TV helped the City of Jefferson to celebrate our world of diversity at the Multicultural Fall Festival. We thank everyone who stopped by to visit, meet Maya and Miguel, engage in our “magnetizing” activities, and learn the benefits of writing at any age as we officially recognized one of the PBS Young Writers winners - Karsten, of Versailles. For two years in a row, his winning stories have placed in the national PBS competition, so it seemed only right to celebrate in the state’s capital. Making the presentation to Karsten was city mayor Carrie Tergin, along with PBS characters Maya and Miguel (left) and KMOS Education Coordinator Mary Clevenger (right). Karsten’s story “Who Needs Math?” follows the adventures of Matthew, who helps his father feed the animals at the zoo. He learns that everyone needs math, including young zookeepers.

Highlights
Reception Tips KMOS is broadcast over the air throughout central Missouri, and is watched by many viewers who use only an antenna, or who also subscribe to cable or satellite. Following these steps will give you the best chance to receive three channels of programming from KMOS. • An antenna can be used in conjunction with satellite receivers, either plugged in directly or with an A/B switch. • Use a large UHF antenna rated for long distances. • Ensure that none of the antenna elements, wires or connections are broken. • Mount it securely, as high as possible, on a pole or roof. • Use a coaxial cable, not a flat ribbon wire. A signal amplifier will enhance signal reception. • Point your antenna towards Syracuse, MO. Digital signals don’t have static, so as you aim the antenna you will either get a good picture, or no picture - there is really no in-between.
So during set-up, it is important to be patient. Each time you aim the antenna, give the receiver 30 seconds or so to register the signal before re-aiming it. Viewers who receive KMOS-TV via antenna have access to three channels of high-quality public television programming. For more tips, and links to online tools, visit www.kmos.org/dtv.
