ON THE COVER Celebrate 125 years of live music at the Ryman Auditorium in this recreation of the 1991 concert.

In this new concert, Harris and the Nash Ramblers perform many of the songs that appeared on At the Ryman, released in January 1992, just nine days before Harris became an official member of the Opry. Read more about this concert on page 11, where you will learn about the new Texas Tenors concert. This month we present other music specials including: 60s Pop, Rock & Soul, Folk Legends: Isn’t This a Time? and a new family music special Generations of Music. It features 16-year-old singer, songwriter, pianist and composer Ethan Bortnick. With guests Peter Yarrow , singer Bethany Yarrow and cellist Rufus Cappadocia, he performs music that you can share with your kids or grandkids, parents or grandparents. Why not make music on your own time? Play the Ukulele with the Atomic Sharks is your chance to try your hands at this amazing little instrument. It is not too late to learn to play an instrument for the first time, or to pick up a new skill that can provide entertainment in your home. By the end of this program, you can be up and strumming Happy Birthday, Somewhere Over The Rainbow, and Jimmy Buffett’s Changes in Latitude

Contact is published monthly for the benefit of KMOS-TV members and viewers. Every effort is made to ensure the schedule is accurate at press time, but some changes may be required to accommodate timely programs, producer changes or technical difficulties.

Member News and Updates In late June representatives from KMOS met children from Early Head Start and Head Start and watched them open and receive books that came directly as a result of KMOS viewers. KMOS and Central Missouri Community Action collaborated to deliver hundreds of books to children in the central Missouri area. This partnership was made possible in part due to contributors during the December pledge drive – we thank all who renewed or established new memberships at that time. Nicole Hume Membership/Major Gifts Also in late June, we held the first of three public screening events for the upcoming series on the Vietnam War. It coincided with the hume@ucmo.edu recent stop of The Wall that Heals exhibit at UCM. We thank all who attended the screening and the wide-ranging discussion by our panel comprised of (left to right in photo) moderator Jeff Huffman, UCM Veteran & Director Military & Veteran Services; Ron Pierce - Veteran & Senior Director, PBS Veterans Initiative; Jack E. Rogers, Ph.D - Director of Forensics, Speech & Debate. Jackie Chagnon - Civilian Aid Worker; Russell “Buddy” Cusick - Vietnam War Veteran; Sam Raber Vietnam War Veteran. We also owe a special Thank You to all of our brave service men and women. This month we will present two new screening events, followed by panel discussions. We are proud to join Lincoln University for the first of these events - at the Pawley Theater on August 23. Then on August 24 we join with Columbia College at a venue to be announced on our website. Each night the doors will open at 6 p.m. for a 6:30 start time. The panel discussion will follow shortly afterwards. Please ensure that your seats for this limited sneak preview are reserved by contacting Karen O’Keefe at 800-753-3436 or kokeefe@ucmo.edu. The 10-part, 18-hour documentary will begin on September 17, so you will be getting a VIP pass into the first look at one of the episodes! This month we present new and favorite specials as part of our regular August pledge drive. Included is a new look at America’s Storyteller, Ken Burns! We also present great music from The Texas Tenors (who will perform in concert in Arrow Rock this December), and awardwinning Emmylou Harris along with returning favorites with the Highwaymen and a Peter, Paul and Mary retrospective. So much good music is in store, along with travel ideas and financial tips from Rick Steves and Suze Orman respectively! We are very excited to announce that the KMOS Development Team will spend time at the Missouri State Fair, so look for us on Thursday, August 17 in the Mohler Assembly Hall. We will be near our friends with Missouri Tourism. We will have some fun things for your little kids to do and watch so be sure to stop by and say Hello! Don’t forget that if you have donated $60 or more to KMOS then you can get FULL access to Passport for one year! Passport is a viewing portal that allows you to watch PBS 24 hours of each day, on your TV, computer or mobile device! Watch up to 1,000 programs (with more added daily). Simply visit kmos.org and click the Passport link - be sure to provide an email address. For more information, contact Karen O’Keefe at 800-753-3436 or kokeefe@ucmo.edu.

From Nashville to Galveston

Emmylou Harris / Texas Tenors.

Emmylou Harris at the Ryman

August 5 at 8 p.m. & August 10 at 7 p.m. Credit: Courtesy of Steve Lowry/Ryman Archives

Twenty-six years ago Emmylou Harris and her acoustic band the Nash Ramblers performed a three-night stint at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium. Those performances, which were live recording sessions for their Grammy Award-winning album At the Ryman, helped spearhead efforts to refurbish the centuryold former home of the Grand Ole Opry. In May 2017, Harris and the Nash Ramblers returned to the venue for a sold-out show, celebrating the 125th anniversary of the Ryman.

In this new concert, they perform many of the songs that appeared on At the Ryman, released in January 1992, just nine days before Harris became an official member of the Opry. The songlist includes “Guitar Town,” “Half as Much,” “Mansion on the Hill,” “Hard Times,” “Lodi” and more. The Nash Ramblers is comprised of mandolin and fiddle player Sam Bush, Jon Randall on guitar, Al Perkins on dobro and Larry Atamanuik on drums and bassist Byron House performing in place of Roy Huskey, Jr., who died in 1997.

The Texas Tenors: Rise

Recorded at the beautiful Grand 1894 Opera House in Galveston, Texas, this concert follows their Emmy Award-winning PBS special You Should Dream, this time with a live orchestra and choir performing classic rock favorites, pop, country and Broadway. It includes a tribute to the musical Les Misérables. Tenors Marcus, JC and John treat you to favorites from their new upcoming album, including orchestral arrangements of “Amazing Grace,” “Lovin’ Feelin,” “Country Roads, Take Me Home,” and “God Bless America.” kmos.org

NOVA KMOS presents two programs capturing the spectacular event and the science behind our understanding of how the sun affects life on earth. This extraordinary cosmic spectacle will pass through 13 states, and everyone in the continental U.S. will have the opportunity to see at least a partial eclipse, making it the most widely viewable eclipse of all time. Commencing at 12:15 p.m. CDT, a lunar shadow 73 miles wide will take one hour and 33 minutes to travel from Oregon on the west coast to South Carolina on the east, allowing continuous observation for 90 minutes.

NOVA Eclipse Over America August 21 at 8 p.m. & August 23 at 7 p.m. Hours after the event, you can see how America experienced this unique phenomenon. PBS and NOVA’s digital teams will engage audiences online with a cross-country Facebook Live event highlighting real-time footage of the solar eclipse and the people and communities experiencing it. Additionally, NOVA will produce a web video chronicling the excitement surrounding the event. Total Solar Eclipse Live August 21 at 1:30 p.m.& 9 p.m. Live from Columbia, South Carolina, SCETV host Beryl Dakers and guests will follow the “path of totality.” Patrick McMillan will report from the SC Botanical Gardens at Clemson University to report about the impact of the eclipse on plants and wildlife.

The Farthest: Voyager In Space August 23 at 8 p.m.

Review NASA’s historic Voyager mission to explore our solar system and beyond, as they celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first Voyager launch. The special tells captivating tales of one of humanity’s greatest achievements in exploration. From supermarket aluminum foil added at the last minute to protect the craft from radiation; to the near disasters at launch; to the emergency maneuvers to fix a crucial frozen instrument platform, viewers get a sense of how difficult - and rewarding - space exploration can be. Featuring a soundtrack of evocative period music including songs from Pink Floyd, stunning cinematography, vivid CGI animations of Voyager traversing the solar system, and original groundbreaking photographs taken by the twin spacecraft, the film tells the story of one of humanity’s most ambitious scientific endeavors. Voyager revolutionized planetary science, resolved key questions about the outer planets and raised intriguing new ones about the evolution of our solar system. Originally approved to travel only to Saturn and Jupiter, the spacecraft used gravityassisted slingshot trajectories to take advantage of a once-in-176-year planetary alignment to extend their missions, with Voyager 2 also extending its mission to visit Uranus and Neptune.

Endeavour Season 4 Sundays at 8 p.m.

Credit: Courtesy of MASTERPIECE

It’s the summer of 1967, and the effects of the Cold War and sixties counterculture are being felt in Oxford. It has barely been two weeks since the events depicted in the season three finale, and we find Oxford’s finest picking up the pieces of their personal and professional lives. Endeavour waits to hear the result of his Sergeant’s Exam, and self-medicates to numb his heartache over Joan, but whisky and Tännhauser will only get a man so far. Meanwhile, Thursday and Win deal with their own sense of grief. Their home is empty, Sam gone to the Army and Joan… who knows where?

Wolf Hall Masterpiece Marathon August 20 beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Mark Rylance is Thomas Cromwell, a brutal blacksmith’s son who rises from the ashes of personal disaster, and deftly picks his way through a court where ‘man is wolf to man.’ Damian Lewis is King Henry VIII, haunted by his brother’s premature death and obsessed with protecting the Tudor dynasty by securing his succession with a male heir to the throne. Told from Cromwell’s perspective, Wolf Hall follows the complex machinations and back room dealings of this pragmatic and accomplished power broker – from humble beginnings and with an enigmatic past – who must serve king and country while dealing with deadly political intrigue, Henry VIII’s tempestuous relationship with Anne Boleyn and the religious upheavals of the Protestant reformation. A historical drama for a modern audience, this unromanticized re-telling lifts the veil on the Tudor middle class and the internal struggles England faced on the brink of Reformation. At the center of it all is Cromwell, navigating the moral complexities that accompany the exercise of power, trapped between his desire to do what is right and his instinct to survive. The cast also includes Claire Foy as the future queen Anne Boleyn, Bernard Hill as the king’s military commander the Duke of Norfolk, Anton Lesser as Thomas More, Mark Gatiss as Cromwell’s rival advisor Stephen Gardiner, Joanne Whalley as Henry’s spurned first wife, Katherine of Aragon, and Jonathan Pryce as Cardinal Wolsey, the powerful Lord Chancellor who first recognized Cromwell’s potential. kmos.org
