T

he Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce has been a vital force in Durham’s business growth and development for more than 100 years, and it continues to foster an innovative and supportive environment that helps both small and large businesses thrive. Economic development is essential to Durham, and the Chamber works in close collaboration with Durham business leaders, elected officials, and regional partners to sustain a healthy economic climate. The Chamber provides its members with opportunities to build valuable relationships while learning new ways to increase efficiency and profitability.

Chamber Initiatives Green Plus The Durham Chamber is a founding partner of the Institute For Sustainable Development 8

and is one of the first chambers in the country to adopt Green Plus, a certification and education program that gives small businesses affordable, practical support in succeeding financially while adopting business practices that are good for the environment. The initiative was designed to enable businesses and academia to share sustainability knowledge.

Make It Durham A public/private partnership of the Chamber, Durham County, the City of Durham, and numerous private businesses, Make It Durham supports local economic development efforts by encouraging more company executives to make Durham their home. By increasing the number of new residents, the program impacts job creation, generates additional tax revenues, and helps foster business startups.

Public Policy The Public Policy division is the voice of business throughout Durham County. Working with the city and county’s elected and administrative leaders on key local and state issues that include transportation, economic development, and education, the Chamber takes an active role in fostering a competitive, job-growing economy that supports a high quality of life for all residents. Leadership Durham Through face-to-face meetings with local and state leaders and on-site visits to local institutions, agencies, and organizations, participants explore the major issues and unique challenges facing the Durham community. Interactive sessions include discussions on a wide range of topics, from the economy, marketing, and workforce issues to leadership development.
