Halloween GAMES

COMMUNITY CONTACT MAGAZINE

Doughnuts on a string

Pumpkin Carving

Tie a delicious doughnut on a string and you have a popular game that is appropriate for all ages. You can even buy some wacky flavours to make the game even more exciting. What will you get when you take a bite ??

Carve out a pumpkin and make a scary face or create something most artists would be envious of. The old triangle-eyed pumpkin has its charm, but for a design unlike any other go online for templates and ideas and some Halloween inspiration.

Apple Bobbing

Pop Goes The Pumpkin

The classic game of bobbing for apples in a tub of water began as a way to predict a player’s fortune. In one version of the game, anyone who got an apple would marry. In another, a dime was put in one apple, a ring in a second, and a button in a third, predicting fortune, marriage, and “single blessedness,” respectively.

Looking to kick off Halloween with a bang, not a boo? This version of a classic carnival game also makes a festive wall decoration, and bursting the confetti-and-candy-filled balloons in this Halloween party game will make everyone explode with laughter.

The Sow & Pigs, Poundon Affectionately known as ‘The Pigs’, the pub has been here since the early 1800’s, when it was an ale house for the drovers passing through. Sitting on the borders of Buckinghamshire & Oxfordshire, The Pigs offers a selection of ales, lagers & wines. It has a large garden and is dog, child and horse friendly. Will and Ali have been running the pub for six years and have recently purchased it from the brewery. They have been busy renovating the building and decorating throughout. Since the arrival of chef James Elton, in 2014, it has also become the ‘Home of Swine Dining’. James runs the small kitchen on his own but has become recognised for turning out restaurant quality food at pub prices. His menu is varied and caters for vegetarians and those with special dietary needs. He even does piglet sized portions for children. Burger night on Mondays, Steak night on Thursdays and his Sunday roasts have become very popular. The ‘Pudding Post’ displays all the home-made desserts such as chocolate brownies, themed cheesecakes and other pub classics. He does barbecues for events, such as the Classic Car day held on August Bank Holiday weekend, and can prepare buffets for functions or celebrations. Christmas is a particularly busy time. The seasonal menu runs from 1st December up till Christmas Eve and a special Christmas dinner is served on the day itself starting at 3pm. Booking, of course, is essential!

BEAUTY by Kate Field Make-up Staying Power!

In an ideal world you’d be able to apply your make up in the morning and be able to head straight for dinner after work without having to reapply! At last beauty brands have recognised we need no-fuss cosmetics and have come up with ranges designed to be long lasting. PRIMERS Using a primer underneath your foundation and eyeshadow is a great way to ensure your make up stays put! Apply it over the face and eyelids before your usual makeup routine. Often foundations will have a recommended primer. A famous nonbudge range is EstÊe Lauder Double wear which has a range of primers that work together with the foundation for a lasting look. LIPS For longer lasting lipstick, outline the lip with liner and then colour the lip with the pencil before applying your lipstick. This give the lipstick a base to grip onto and will give you much more stay power through the day.

POWDER Sealing your makeup in place with a powder is a great method of setting your makeup. Be careful though, too much powder will sit in creases. Just a gentle brush will take any shine off of the makeup and lock it in place. Kate Field Tweak Beauty

Our Wedding Diary By the time you read this next installment I will be a married woman… A MARRIED WOMAN!

So since I last wrote my blog both Neil and I have been on our hen and stag parties! We had the BEST time with all of our best friends! My hen party was down in deepest darkest Devon with 15 other hens! We travelled down on the Friday and stopped for lunch at what could only be described as a muddy looking sea – somewhere near Bristol so it was actually an estuary! After lunch we headed off to join the other ladies who were waiting at the house with pimms and cake!

Perfect! I was far too excited to be able to eat anything though!

14

After the initial shock of seeing everyone I had presents to open (yes presents!) We carried on having drinks until it was time to get ready for our dinner. The girls had arranged for a French chef to come in and cook for us all!

The food was delicious and we drank bubbles, talked… a lot, and danced the night away until the early hours! It was so much fun! The next day we all woke up for a hearty breakfast, (trust me, we needed it!) Then next on the agenda was clay pigeon shooting! We all had to wear something tweed (I love tweed!) and get ready for 11am which was when the man was to come and collect us. Lucky for us the clay pigeon shooting was on the grounds of the

Please mention Community Contact when responding to adverts

cider press (our house). I have decided Clay Pigeon Shooting is SO much fun! I want to start up a girls gun club now! Who’s with me? I hit a few and it was such a great feeling! A few of the girls were fantastic *cough Lorraine Walters, Stephanie Partridge, Hannah Mackenzie! Later that afternoon some lovely beauticians came to massage me and give me a facial – it was so nice to be pampered! The other girls had treatments too as we lazed around drinking more champagne and spending girly time together in the sun until dinner. After dinner it was time to get ready for our girls night out! We basically had a girly house party listening to old songs from our youth (Spice Girls, Mariah Carey, All Saints, etc) as well as playing drinking games, and then headed out to Exeter for a few hours. It was perfect!

The next day was a lazy day, the last few nights had taken their toll! Later on we all headed to

Bideford for our last activity – driving a speedboat! Then the four of us who opted to go on the back of the speed boat on a doughnut went out. That was great fun and surprisingly the sea was really warm, 18 degrees in fact! We finished off the weekend with fish and chips by the sea. I can honestly say this was the best weekend with the best of friends and I would like to thank each and every one of you who made it so very special for me, so thank you! So until I am Mrs Massey!

Majorca Majorca is the largest island in the Balearics, and there really is so much more to do than lie on the beach – but of course, you have that option too! There are plenty of ways to enjoy both its coastline and the island it’s self – particularly in autumn and winter when the crowds have gone and the temperature is more suitable for outdoor activities.

The key to Majorca’s success as a destination has been its ability to adapt to new tastes. Whether you want unashamed luxury, a pretty port for your yacht, a quiet boutique hotel in the country, a second home or an adventure break, you’ll find it, alongside the cheap and cheerful two-star holidays that were mocked in the 1980s Heineken advert: “The water in Majorca don’t taste like it what it oughta.” Mallorca is both compact and varied. Its centre of gravity is in the south-west corner, around a huge bay – la Badia de Palma – which shelters the elegant capital, Palma, home to half of the island’s

24

800,000 population.

When to go Although the beach holiday season gets going in May and winds down in October, the islands are beautiful in early spring when the almond blossom is out. Outside the hottest months of July and August, all the Balearics are good for activity holidays, whether easy or more challenging, with plenty to see if you are interested in plants or birds. From late January and throughout February, the almond trees - about four million of them – are in flower in the valleys and across the plains of Majorca. This is traditionally low season, when accommodation and flights are cheapest, and while it may not be warm enough to lie on the beach, the temperature is usually just right for exploring the countryside in the sunshine.

If you can’t get there to see the almond blossom, go in late spring when the cherry

trees are flowering, or in the autumn to witness – or take part in – the grape and olive harvests. Then head to a hidden cove and plunge into the turquoise sea. Although most resorts close down in the winter months, Palma is great for a weekend break all year round and life goes on in the villages. If you want to do more than just lie on a beach, take advantage of the low rates in winter and get a taste of real life in the Balearics.

visit the town’s exceptional Can Prunera museum (00 34 971 638 973; canprunera. com; 10.30am-6.30pm; closed Mondays, October to March; €5). Housed in an elegant 1910 building at Carrer de la Luna 86, the collection includes a fine clutch of paintings by local artist Juli Ramis, as well as works by Picasso, Paul Klee and Man Ray.

Dining out While fish’n’chips, frankfurters and sangria still rule in many resorts, there’s no shortage of local fare. The traditional cuisine of the island is based on its fish and seafood or meat such as rabbit or lamb.

Where to go In summer, you might not want to move from the beach – whether that means snorkelling in a tiny rocky cove or sunbathing at one of the lively resorts. But there is always something to explore in Majorca, from honey-coloured villages to nature reserves. Getting around is easy by car or bus and there are some wonderful walking and cycling routes. Spend at least a couple of days seeing the magnificent architecture and museums in Palma – leaving plenty of time for shopping of course. Mallorca’s dramatic west coast is dominated by the Tramuntana mountains. The highest of them, Puig Major (1,445m), towers over the pleasant town of Sóller, which has become a centre for walking and hiking. For an authentically Mallorcan experience, take the 100-year-old narrowgauge train from Palma to Sóller and

Specialities include the chorizo-like sobrassada sausage, and ensaïmada, a kind of brioche made with lard. Palma’s coolest restaurant, Simply Fosh, at Carrer de la Missió, has turned a 17th-century convent refectory into a relaxed temple to Mediterranean fine dining (00 34 971 720 114; conventdelamissio.com; mains from €20).

Pet Care on Bonfire Night Animals have very acute hearing. Loud bangs and whistles may cause them actual pain in their ears. But by following • these simple guidelines your pet need not suffer. Small pets Rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, mice, ferrets and birds all need to be treated with special care when fireworks are being let off. These animals are easily frightened. The Blue Cross advises that owners of such types of small animal should follow these precautions: •

• •

Hutches/cages and enclosures should, if possible, be brought into a • quiet room indoors, or into a garage or shed. Give your pet extra bedding to burrow into so it feels safe. If you cannot bring your pet’s hutch • inside, you should turn its enclosure around so that it faces a wall orfence instead of the open garden. Cover any aviaries or hutches with thick blankets or a duvet to block out the sight of the fireworks and deaden • the sound of the bangs, but make sure there is enough ventilation.

Dogs & cats • Always keep dogs and cats inside when fireworks are being let off. • Make sure your dog is walked earlier in • the day before the fireworks start. • Close all windows and doors, and block off catflaps to stop pets escaping and to keep noise to a minimum. Draw the • curtains, and if the animals are used to the sounds of TV or radio, switch them on (but not too loudly) in order to block out some of the noise of the fireworks. • Ensure dogs are wearing some form of easily readable identification (ID) –

even in the house. They should have at least a collar and tag. Prepare a ‘den’ for your pet where it can feel safe and comfortable – perhaps under a bed with some of your old clothes. It may like to hide there when the fireworks start.

Let your pet pace around, whine, miaow and hide in a corner if it wants to. Do not try to coax it out – it’s just trying to find safety, and should not be disturbed. Try not to cuddle and comfort distressed pets as they will think you are worried too, and this may make the problem worse. Instead stay relaxed, act normally and praise calm behaviour. Avoid leaving your pet alone during such potentially upsetting events. If you do have to leave the house, don’t get angry with your pet if you find it has been destructive after being left on its own. Shouting at a frightened pet will only make it more stressed. Don’t tie your dog up outside while fireworks are being let off, ie outside a shop while you pop inside, or leave it in the garden or in your car. Never take your dog to a fireworks display. Even if it doesn’t bark or whimper at the noise, it doesn’t mean it is happy. Excessive panting and yawning can sometimes indicate that your dog is stressed. *Source Blue Cross*

Five different ways to eat your Jacket Potatoes this bonfire night Blue cheese and bacon Mix crumbled blue cheese with Greek-style natural yogurt and chopped spring onions. Spoon onto jacket potatoes with crispy bacon.

Sweet potatoes with barbecue beans Bake sweet potatoes in their jackets instead of ordinary potatoes. Serve with a mixture of fried onions, baked beans, mini sausages and a hefty glug of barbecue sauce.

Chilli roasted vegetables Roast a mixture of red onions, peppers, aubergine, courgettes and carrots. Stir in canned chilli beans and heat through. Spoon onto jacket potatoes and top with soured cream.

Pesto & spinach Blitz some baby spinach in a blender with pesto, freshly grated Parmesan and a drizzle of olive oil. Spoon over jacket potatoes with canned cannellini beans and some fresh basil leaves.

Croque Monsieur Mix chopped ham into a tub of fresh cheese sauce. Cut a cross in cooked jacket potatoes, place in a baking tin and top with spoonfuls of the sauce. Sprinkle over grated Gruyere cheese and bake in the oven 200C, Gas 6 for 15 mins.

Tips From The Jar • Instantly core a head of iceberg lettuce by slamming it down on a cutting board. • Pre-soak pasta and it will cook in about 60 seconds • Slice avocadoes right in the skin to make neat cubes. Then scoop out with a spoon.

• Put a dish towel or damp paper towel under your cutting board to keep it from slipping and wobbling. • Grate frozen butter straight into pastry dough for fast, even distribution. • Peel a whole head of garlic by shaking it really hard.

IN YOUR GARDEN

Topical advice from Buckingham Garden Centre’s, Chris Day

The autumn offers so much diverse colour and interest in the garden, however there’s still plenty to be done as we prepare the garden for the winter. So with spring bulbs, forks and rakes to hand, let’s get gardening!

PLANT Wallflowers, Forget-me-Nots,

Bellis, Primulas, Violas and winter Pansies and other spring bedding plants in prepared ground or pots. Continue to plant spring-flowering bulbs – Crocus, Daffodils, Tulips and iris. Don’t neglect hanging basket and container maintenance - a little deadheading, watering and feeding can keep them going until mid-autumn. Once they are past their best, re-plant with spring-

flowering bulbs in layers together (pictured) with hardy seasonal (bedding) plants. Raise patio containers on to bricks or purposemade pot feet to avoid them sitting in water during the winter.

Quick Fixes Check tree ties and stakes before winter

gales cause damage. Climbing roses should be pruned now if not done last month. Get your lawnmower, hedge trimmers, plus any other power tools not needed over the winter, serviced now in preparation for next year. Sow Sweet Peas in a cold frame or the greenhouse for early summer blooms next year. Sow other hardy annuals e.g. Calendula, Centaurea, Limnanthes and Poppies in situ.

You can harden your lawn up for

winter by applying an autumn lawn feed, which is high in potassium. Do this after scarifying (pictured) and aerating but before applying a top dressing. Do not give summer feeds that are high in nitrogen as this will only result in weak, soft growth, which will be prone to disease in the autumn weather. Toadstools and fairy rings appearing in the lawn may be a sign that scarification and autumn lawn care is necessary. The month of September is your last

chance to use lawn weedkillers to control perennial weeds such as daises and buttercups. This is an ideal time of year to create new lawns from turf or seed.

Clear dead leaves promptly once they

start to fall, as rotting leaves can be a source of disease in the garden. They are, however, useful on the compost heap and can be shredded first with a shredder or mulching mower, to help them break down quicker. Good garden hygiene helps to prevent disease, so it is vital to throw out or destroy infected leaves. Do not compost them or leave them lying, as this could spread the disease.

Gap-Filling

will need good support against autumn gales. To provide support, drive a stake in to the windward side and use a propriety tree tie to secure the plant to the stake. Smaller trees and shrubs can usually be adequately supported using a stout cane or two. Now is also the best time to plant out most trees, shrubs or herbaceous plants that you have been raising from seed.

Edibles

bird-proof netting to keep unwanted feathered guests hitting your crops.

We are entering a perfect time of the year for planting container-grown shrubs, because the ground is still warm after the summer, but also quite moist, which encourages early root growth and, therefore, quick establishment. Prepare the ground by incorporating well-rotted garden compost, Manure or humus, etc., and plant firmly. Trees and taller shrubs Apart from planting out a further batch of spring cabbage, the main focus needs to be on harvesting. Crops that will need your attention include apples, grapes, autumn Raspberries, nuts and pears. The last of the maincrop potatoes need to be lifted, and carefully dried for storage. Your Remaining leafy crops would benefit, if not already done so, from a cover of

Wow Moments... People often say to me ‘maintaining my weight is so hard’ and I have to say I completely agree.

feel like the fat one and before you know it you don’t want to go out and instead console yourself with the contents of your cupboard.

I am a slimmer myself and I have been conscious of my body size since I was about 10. Now 10 years old is actually quite young to be conscious of body size. I wonder what age you were when you first became aware of body image and size?

My time to change came when I embarked on my training to become a counsellor. It truly was

I also wonder if you know what it was that led you to become aware of your body size? Now with me, I have tried every diet going. You name it I have got the XXL t-shirt. It wasn’t until my late 20’s that I finally realised nothing was going to change unless I decided to make that change. I have gone from a size 20 down to a size 12 back up to a size 20 again and the reason why? Because I overate and didn’t do enough exercise? Or because of emotional eating maybe? Maybe abit of both? Now. It’s easy for people to say just eat less and move more but being overweight can be so limiting. Confidence can be an issue, you

a #WOWMoment for me. I learnt that I over ate not only because I was lacking in confidence but also because I was trapped in a cycle of sabotage and self doubt. It was such a vicious cycle and it’s easy to become a victim of your own body image. Now working in the weight loss industry, I want to help people understand that it doesn’t have to be that way. You don’t have to waste years of your life thinking about your weight (like I did). That’s why I created Slimspiration® support. Slimspiration® is a FREE online support service that helps slimmers look at their behaviour when it comes to eating, weight loss, weight gain and even weight management. The support offered

works with counselling techniques to help you gain an understanding into your thoughts, feelings and behaviours and look at how you can make changes that you feel comfortable with. Now when I say it’s a free service people often look at me as if ‘yeah right, what’s the catch?’ but it truly is free! You see I may not be walking in your shoes every day but I know when shoes don’t fit and if I can help at least 1 person have a #WOWMoment then I know I have paid it forward in someway. I just wish I had known how to

address my body issues when I was a teenager. I would’ve saved myself a lot of time, money and tears and wouldn’t have waited until my 30’s to become comfortable in my own skin. So sign up for our FREE Slimspiration® support today at www.slimspirationsupport.com

TIME TO TALK THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY BY SIR CURTLY AMBROSE Format: Hardback ISBN: 9781781314371 Price: £18.99 Available from Cole’s Books, Bicester Sir Curtly Ambrose is one of the most famous cricket players of all time. He is also notorious for his silence. Now, for the first time, Curtly will tell his story. One of the leading and most lethal - fast bowlers of all time, Curtly Ambrose played 98 Tests and 176 One Day Internationals for the West Indies, and for much of his career topped the ICC player rankings. He was an integral part of the iconic West Indies teams of the late 1980s and early 1990s whilst also bearing witness to their decline throughout the 1990s and beyond. A formidable sportsman, Curtly has unique insight into the extreme highs and debilitating lows of international cricket. But during his career Curtly Ambrose was notorious for his silence. He rarely spoke to the media and, if he did, it was usually to rebuff an interview, which earned him the infamous reputation of Curtly talks to no one! In this, his autobiography, Curtly will tell the story of his life with the West Indies team for the very first time. From his colourful upbringing in Antigua, through to the turbulent politics of both nation and dressing room, the book takes you behind the scenes to give a fascinating insight into the career of an iconic sportsman. With his customary honesty, Curtly will discuss his relationship with both the game and his teammates and competitors, and will talk in depth about key moments in his career, including his extraordinary spell against Australia in 1992, taking 7-1. From the culture of West Indian cricket to experiencing post-Apartheid cricket in South Africa, as well as touching on his relationship with cricket mogul and notorious financier Allen Stanford, the book will speak to fans of works such as C.L.R. James Beyond a Boundary, as well as fans of cricket and sports biography. It also includes forewords from legendary cricket commentator Richie Benaud and Steve Waugh.

The New Ford Fiesta Performance There are plenty of engines to choose from, but the 99bhp Ecoboost petrol is the pick of the range. It pulls strongly from just above idle and revs smoothly and eagerly; in fact, it’s so strong that there’s little point upgrading to the 123bhp Ecoboost. The optional Powershift automatic gearbox is a tad pricey, but it works well with the Ecoboost engine.

the infotainment systems aren’t very easy to use compared with those in most rivals.

Ride & Handling The Fiesta changes direction with an immediacy that many an exotic sports car would be proud of. Factor in minimal roll in corners and plenty of confidence-inspiring grip, and you don’t have to drive very far to realise that the Fiesta is the sweetest-handling supermini you can buy. It also rides more smoothly than most rivals.

Quality & Reliability Ford has put plenty of effort into making the Fiesta’s interior as distinctive as its exterior. Ford has a good record in our reliability surveys, though, and the Fiesta was rated above average for mechanical reliability in the latest JD Power customer satisfaction study.

Behind The Wheel The big-car refinement of the Fiesta is matched by big-car comforts in the front of the cabin. There’s two-way steering wheel adjustment, loads of seat travel and plenty of support for your back, so almost everyone should be able to find the ideal driving position. Unfortunately,

Buying & Owning The Fiesta is economical and cheap to insure, and there are massive discounts available. Low CO2 emissions from the Ecoboost petrols and Econetic diesels also make the Fiesta a surprisingly cheap company car.

Safety & Security All Fiestas come with stability control and seven airbags, including full-length curtain ’bags and a driver’s knee ’bag. The car also received the maximum five-star rating in its Euro NCAP crash test. Deadlocks and a visible vehicle identification number help to make life difficult for thieves.

The Ford Fiesta is superb to drive: it rides comfortably and handles with real panache. It’s stylish inside and out, and there are some big discounts available. The Ford Fiesta is a brilliant supermini that excels in all the important areas. The details of this review are from whatcar.com
