the MaGIc oF cYclInG Retired architect and cyclist Gwyn Kennedy describes his thoughts every time he gets on his bike: “It feels absolutely magic.” The 67-year-old from Milngavie came late to cycling and can clearly recall his two-wheeled epiphany. He says: “It was after the kids had left home, maybe 20 years ago, and my wife Christine and I joined friends on a cycling holiday in France. I immediately loved it.

The new Milngavie Week 2016, starting on June 11, has come about after people who took part in Making the Most of Milngavie survey said they would like to see a special week of events each summer.

Ruth Blakey, of Milngavie Community Development Trust, is delighted by the commitment of local people to the new week. She says: “So many local organisations have volunteered to put on an event and this shows their commitment to the revival of Milngavie Week.”

The Week will start with the Bearsden & Milngavie Highland Games and will close on June 18 with Milngavie’s Classic Car Show. More than 20 different events for all ages have been lined up, including treasure hunts, a school debating competition, a primary school football tournament, shows for cats and dogs, a guided walk and a (plastic) duck race. BeneFits oF going rounD Circle Dancing is a style of dance done in a circle or semicircle to musical accompaniment. It is probably the oldest known dance formation and was part of community life from when people first started to dance.

CIRCLE TIME: Circle Dancing is a great way to keep active fi t and healthy as well as a great way of socialising.

Have you heard of Circle Dancing? Did you know it can benefit both physical and mental wellbeing? So, why not try it in Milngavie? At St Andrew’s Church hall, teacher Jenny Oswald is keen to welcome new members to her Circle Dancing for all sessions. The classes on Thursdays from 2pm to 4pm are open to men and women of any age and across all fitness levels. No partner is required. Jenny first discovered Circle Dancing 20 years ago and brought it to Milngavie eight

years ago. She says: “I was immediately taken by this form of movement and exercise when I first attended a class and I decided that I wanted to teach others about it. “It’s accessible to all kinds of people and requires no prior experience, yet it brings about a lot of happiness and joy as well as the fitness benefits of dancing and being active.”

Some of the dances at Circle Dancing For All are traditional while some are choreographed. The dances have a wide variety of form and mood, from slow and meditative to energetic and celebratory. Jenny says: “Everyone who comes along seems to enjoy this style of dancing a great deal. It’s always a happy and friendly class and many people make new friends. “Dancing is well known for its fitness benefits and circle dancing is good for the memory and co-ordination skills. It’s such a wonderful way to exercise with others and have fun.” You can join the Thursday sessions in Milngavie this month and then when they restart after the summer break in August. becoming “bored with road running and 10ks, he switched to trail runs and took part in his fi rst off-road ultra-distance race in 2014, the 69-mile Wall in Northumberland. He was immediately hooked.

At 1am on June 18, 200 runners will stand nervously on the start line of the annual - and epic - West Highland Way Race in Milngavie.

He says the appeal of the WHW Race is “wondering if I am capable of such a task. He adds: “I used to work in Milngavie opposite the start of the WHW and spoke with a few of the runners in 2014. This inspired me to enter in 2015 because the massive challenge, both physically and mentally, really appealed to me.

Ahead of them is 95.28 miles of Scotland’s famous longdistance trail, which finishes in Fort William, in the Scottish Highlands. The race is a huge test of endurance yet entries are over-subscribed and many runners return time and again to complete the ultra race. In the final weeks before the event, we talked to two local runners who will compete in the WHW Race 2016.

The second time, when he was 11, we did it in four days. “As an ultra marathon runner, it seemed like a natural challenge to run the race, especially as it’s on my doorstep. dog of the Month Rory the dog was brought in to Avalon Veterinary Clinic in Milngavie after he vomited the ear of a dog toy. While at the vets, he brought up more parts of toy, including the other ear. But the vet Anna was worried that Rory still had more parts of the toy in his stomach so he was sedated and X-rayed. This

confirmed Anna’s suspicion, The owners agreed that Rory should undergo a full general anaesthetic and exploratory surgery to remove the foreign body in his stomach and to check his intestines for any other foreign bodies. During the operation, Anna removed two toy squeakers from Rory’s stomach. Because Rory also suffers from chronic kidney disease, he needed to be hospitalised on intravenous fluids for a couple of days but he has since made a fantastic recovery Once Rory was allowed home he needed a further check up to ensure his wounds were healing and then to have his stitches removed. Rory has been chosen as pet of the month at Avalon for his bravery and because after all the treatment he was still happy to visit the vets.

Whilst his originals may be beyond the pocket of many, his beautifully presented range of limited edition giclee prints make for a more modest purchase. A selection of these framed prints can be found in the gallery in June along in addition to a wide selection of his original works. Alongside Burns’ paintings you can discover new impressionist style oils from James Somerville Lindsay and stunning pastels of Scottish landscapes by Margaret Evans. There’s new blood in the form of Helensburgh artist Thomas Cameron and Neoclassical sculpture from the town’s own Reginald MacDonald. Creative solution for garden fun When Jamie and Sarah Bruce Jones could not find the right garden play equipment for their children they decided to set up a company to manufacture their own. Some 16 years later and demand for Caledonia Play’s high quality wooden products is still growing. Based in Kinross, Perthshire, the company designs, makes, sells and installs an ever expanding range of playtime equipment including swings, climbing frames, slides, sandpits, playhouses, forts and castles. Customers can design bespoke products, according to space, needs and budget. They can add to, and adapt, modular and standalone setups as children grow. Sarah, a director at Caledonia Play, says: “What started as a frustration at not being able to find the right type of play equipment for our own children has become a successful business. “Our desire is that the products

with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: ANAPHYLACTIC SHOCK…

John and Anne Wyke will host their Open Garden Weekend on June 18 and 19 at 6 Ledcameroch Road, Bearsden, G61 4AA. People can visit between 2pm and 5pm each day. The aim of the event is to raise funds for local charity Yogability, which provides free yoga classes to children and adults with special needs, and the Paul O'Gorman Leukaemia Research Centre, based at Gartnavel Hospital. Ann says: “Both of these charities are very special and we hope to raise as much money as possible for them with our open garden event.” She adds: “The format of the open days will be for people to visit the garden, wander around

at their leisure with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. There will also be lots of cakes and cookies to indulge in. “Then, hopefully, everyone will make a donation so we can pass on the funds to the charities. “As well as the donations box we will have a plant stall with lots of interesting things for sale. Last year we had more than 1,000 pots!”

Last month a restaurant owner in England was jailed over the death of someone who had been given a meal made with peanuts, despite having a known peanut allergy. The victim had suffered anaphylactic shock and died as a result. Anaphylaxis is the most severe form of allergic reaction. It affects all the body systems, causing swelling of the tissues affecting the eyes, throat, lungs, gut and skin. This results in breathing and circulatory problems which if untreated results in dangerously low oxygen levels and occasionally death. Allergies have become increasingly common in the past 20 years. Fortunately people are quicker to

recognise these and affected people can be supplied with “Epipens”. These are pen shaped devices which anyone can use to inject Adrenaline when pressed against the skin, Adrenaline being the very effective antidote to anaphylaxis if given early. People who have suspected severe allergies can be referred to the Anaphylaxis clinic to help identify the cause and prevent repeated episodes. Sometimes antihistamines or steroid tablets can be taken to reduce the chance of future reactions although careful avoidance of known triggers is the best way. If you are concerned this may be an issue for you, then speak to your GP as early as possible to get the best advice!

Join JiMMie For WeirFest 2016 crowds arrive to enjoy the day’s action-packed programme. Organised as a major family fun day the festival will feature all the best ingredients of a summer gala day out, with everything from outdoor craft demonstrations to cookery demonstrations – not to mention a host of popular music acts. These will include veteran folkie Jimmie MacGregor, the Loch Lomond Ukulele Orchestra and Alastair MacDonald, among others.

WEIR'S WAY: If you remember the wonderful Tom Weir from Weir's Way then you're not alone.

June 18 is the date for the second annual Weirfest gathering, which will also include the Red Toorie Hat Festival – and it could easily attract thousands of Tom Weir fans. a much-photographed reminder of just how much he achieved during his eventful life as the

There will be outdoor displays, a Toorie Hat treasure hunt and all sorts of other entertainment – and if you don’t already own an iconic red toorie bunnet now is the ideal chance to acquire one, as these will be on sale too. And as well as free parking there’s a regular waterbus service on hand to ferry people over from Luss. Apart from acting as a focus

for the enormous reservoir of enthusiasm for Weir and what he stood for the special day has a strictly practical purpose, which is to raise funds for the Tom Weir memorial site – already one of the area’s top visitor attractions. A couple of months ago a mountain garden in honour of the famous broadcaster and his widow Rhona was opened on a perfect spot overlooking Balmaha Bay, a project which involved an outlay of £130,000. It includes a variety of typical mountain plants, as well as stones and rocks collected nearby, and encapsulates in one imaginative natural feature the hallmarks of everything Tom, as author and environmentalist, held most dear. It also acts as an excellent introduction to anyone who wants to see at a glance how important the flora and fauna really is – particularly youngsters discovering the countryside just miles from their urban homes. Ramblers and local supporters are marking completion of a planting initiative along the first phase of the West Highland Way with a special event.

Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB This month:

The West Highland Way Project Celebration takes place on June 18 with an official opening ceremony at 11am. Milngavie in Bloom is also delighted to announce that Scottish folk singer and broadcaster Jimmy Macgregor will be in attendance. The past two years have seen volunteers working hard to dig, clear, prune and plant to create a welcoming and more memorable start to the longdistance trail, the West Highland Way.

CONSUMING ALCOHOL IN PUBLIC

The recent spell of sunny weather has given us all high hopes for a great summer full of impromptu barbeques at the beach and picnics in the park. This idea generally goes hand in hand with an ice cold beer or a glass of something sparkling. Although this sounds extremely civilised, unfortunately, often people drinking alcohol in public areas can become anti-social and cause a nuisance to others. In order to tackle this problem and reduce alcohol related incidents of disorder, all local authorities in Scotland now have alcohol byelaws in place. There is no blanket

ban against drinking in Scotland. It is up to the council to decide where the byelaws are to be enforced and currently that is in around 480 towns and villages across the country. This is why you may hear of people being able to enjoy a few drinks in Edinburgh’s Princes Street Gardens but not Glasgow Green. If you have any doubt it would be best to check your council website. The penalty for consuming alcohol if you are in a public area can put more than a dampener on your afternoon of fun in the sun and could result in a fine of up to £500.

As we prepare for our 15th year at summer camp, we believe summer camp matters. In today’s world of instantaneous social media updates, technology overload and diminishing face-toface interactions, summer camp provides the perfect place to learn new skills, make strong friendships and have fun within a safe & structured environment. We founded Camp Indy because we truly love summer camp and we believe in the positive impact it can have on children’s development. Camp Indy is a unique American-style summer day camp returning to Glasgow this summer. Lead by positive young adult role models, we create a unique atmosphere where our campers sing

crazy songs in the dining hall, roast marshmallows on the campfire and dress up head to toe in red or blue to compete for their team in our Colour War – Vikings & Celts. Our campers have the opportunity to choose their own activities including action & adventure, creative superstar, art, performing arts, sports and football. Camp Indy is based at Kelvinside Academy in Glasgow’s west end. Our campers, aged 5 – 14 come from all over Glasgow. School Senior Savvy hosts with Suhail Rehman free BBQ This month: GARDEN TIME POLISHING

Castlehill Primary School is organising a free Summer Fayre and Barbecue this month. Funds raised will benefit all children in the school, including primary pupils and nursery children. The event takes place on Saturday June 4 from 11am until 2pm. Castlehill Fundraising Team Chair Heather Seymour says: “The annual Summer Fayre and Barbecue is always popular. “We hope, whether it’s rain or shine, it will be well attended again, especially as it’s the school’s 50th anniversary year.”

01436 679994 www.nightanddaycleaning.co.uk

The fayre includes fun fair side stalls, face painting, lucky dip, pocket money toys, a tombola, second-hand bookstall, home baking and much more fun for the whole family.

Warm days are finally upon us and gardening can be a great activity. It’s a fun way of staying active and getting fresh air. Age can make some tasks harder, but here are some tips which may help.

Build raised beds Raised beds make gardening easier if you struggle to stretch or bend down to the plants. They are much easier to weed and maintain as you can perch on the side and use a trowel to plant and weed.

Lightweight tools Older heavier steel tools should be replaced with lightweight hand tools with rubber handles and ergonomic designs that will be easier on your hands

and require less effort, and don’t forget a strong pair of cushioned gloves.

Pick plants carefully Choose plants that are easy to maintain and able to withstand a variety of conditions. Onions and shallots are very low maintenance. Other easy to grow crops are spring onions, broad beans and carrots. If your soil is poor try growing hardy crops such as rosemary, sage or thyme.

Try container gardening Containers provide a variety of fragrant and colourful flowers as well as delicious vegetables and they are far easier to manage than a garden.

HELPING YOU HAVE ‘FEET FOR LIFE’ E

very year the Society of Podiatrists and Chiropodists use June as the national “Feet for Life” Campaign. The aim of the month long initiative is to raise awareness of the profession as a whole. To celebrate, Foot Medic Podiatry & Orthotic Centre willl be available in the heart of Buchannan Galleries in the first week of June to offer FREE foot scanning and advice. Foot Medic Director and lead Podiatrist, Ciaran Canney explains, “As Glasgow’s only accredited clinic, we are a leader in Podiatry and we want to raise awareness of Podiatry and the true, life changing benefits it can have for patients. The public are already well aware of who to see when it comes to dental or eye problems but when its a foot or lower limb

problem, its not always clear who they should see. That’s why we want to demonstrate the advances in foot and limb health.” Foot problems are often one of the first signs of other diseases, and if you have a disease which is known to affect the extremities its particularly important to get professional advice from time to time. “It is so important to attend to foot problems early to prevent these developing into something more serious. Podiatrists can offer advice on foot wear, general foot care and nail care. In our clinic, we offer advanced therapies and imaging such as extracorporeal shock wave therapy and diagnostic ultrasound. Surgery for ingrowing nails, verucca and

some types of corns forms part of our normal service. We are the lower limb medicine experts”. We would urge everyone to pay us a visit in Buchanan galleries for the first week of June or why not pop in for

CASE STUDY Mr Price

WHAT IS THE SUCCESS RATE FOR RADIAL SHOCKWAVE THERAPY? Documented international results show an overall result rate of 77% of chronic conditions that have not been cured with other kinds of treatment. A review at 12 weeks is recommended following your final treatment. What are the advantages with Radial Shockwave Therapy? Radial Shockwave Therapy is applied without medication, for example Cortisone injections. The treatment stimulates and effectively supports the

body’s self healing mechanisms. It is usual to experience immediate pain relief following the treatment and hence improved movement. Reported side effects are minimal. If you have a chronic soft tissue condition ( longer than 3 months) why not speak to us today to see if shockwave therapy just might make the difference you’ve been waiting for and to take advantage of our block booking discount.

FOOT MEDIC PODIATRY & ORTHOTIC CENTRE

Mr Price had struggled with plantar fasciitis for 2 years. Some previous treatments had helped including stretching and insoles although none had resolved his condition. His work as a roofer was contributing to his condition, spending long hours on ladders. After the first session of radial shock wave therapy he reported a significant improvement in his symptoms. “I couldn’t believe it. The treatment was a bit uncomfortable but I was in so much pain before, I was willing to try anything. I am free of pain today, I’m so grateful” Mr price underwent a prescribed course of 3 weekly sessions. He reported significant improvement throughout the treatment and remains pain free 16 weeks following his initialtreatment.

FREE foot scanning for the remainder of June in our Bearsden clinic or make use of our FREE ‘find my foot pain’ web tool available through our website.

HOW DOES SHOCKWAVE THERAPY WORK? • The shockwave is delivered to the tissue via a compressed air impulse exerted by the hand piece. • The shockwave radiates out, extending to the entire area where pain occurs. • Usually no more than 3-4 sessions are needed. • Each treatment takes approximately 5-10 minutes to be delivered. • No anaesthetic is required and you can continue usual activities. (It is recommended to avoid pain provoking exercise for 48 hours following treatment.) • No surgery or other therapy is required and treatment can usually start straight away

InsPIrInG PeoPle: artist Mark niven While faced with a range of challenging disabilities, Mark Niven, of Milngavie, has found a way to cope through his love of art. As a child, Mark struggled with many school subjects, including maths and English. In early adulthood, he was diagnosed with learning difficulties, autism spectrum disorder, including Asperger’s, and severe dyslexia. More recently, his diagnosis has been extended to include Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI) and Developmental Coordination Disorder. Suffering from CVI means that Mark’s vision can be affected by the way he is positioned in relation to an object. Although his eyesight is good, it is the signals his eyes send to the brain that can

become confused. Yet throughout his life, Mark has enjoyed art and shown a great talent for painting. His silk artworks of urban landscapes and nature exude vibrancy, brilliant colour and observation. Mark explains how art makes him feel. He said: “At school, I couldn’t seem to do some subjects like other children in the class but art was easy. I could show people that I was good at something and it felt very freeing.”

WrIter Jan reveals Local journalist Jan Patience has revealed how she came to be coauthor of an important biography about Scottish artist George Wyllie.

The book has already received great praise. Scottish actor Alan Cumming said the book offers a “fascinating insight into the great, quixotic life of George Wyllie, and how he came to leave his indelible mark on the Scottish arts landscape.” Author and broadcaster Muriel Gray added: “This delightful book is the most wonderful explanation of who the artist and the man George Ralston Wyllie really was and where he came from.” The biography project first came about when a mutual friend originally from Bearsden, Fiona

Rosevale Cottage is a one bedroom semi detached cottage with terraced garden and views of Gareloch. Until August 2015 it had been left desperately needing some TLC so work commenced to bring the cottage back to life. The overgrown garden was cut back and landscaped and now a dining/seating area with BBQ awaits guests looking for ‘a get away from it all break’ in the peaceful surroundings of the ‘Green Isle’ (weather permitting of course!!!) Inside Rosevale Cottage alterations were made to create light, clean spacious rooms but with trying to keep some of the original features too which date back to approx 1926. Jan, of Bardowie, near Milngavie, wrote Arrivals and Sailings alongside the late artist’s daughter Louise.

Black, put Jan and Louise in touch with each other. The Wyllie family were keen to do something to celebrate George’s life and work and they hoped that Jan could help. Jan has been a journalist and editor for more than 25 years. She writes on visual art for the Herald, Homes and Interiors Scotland and the Daily Record, among others. Jan said: “From the outset I was very keen to be involved with any project that would remember the amazing life and work of George.

His most famous works, Straw Loco and Paper Boat, had made a big impression on me.” Sadly, George died in May 2012 but by then Jan had become the driving force of a new event, the Whysman Festival, which culminated in a retrospective of the sculptor’s life. After the festival, the idea for the book began to “ferment” in Jan’s mind. She said: “I was very taken by George’s story and I wanted to do more to remind people about the great artist’s life. “For example, I was fascinated

Declaring that it was “TIME FOR ART” in the 1960s, he immersed himself in the art world. Wyllie’s lifelong love of performance and his fascination with the absurd led him to create memorable and politically provocative public artworks, such as the life-sized Straw Locomotive, which hung from the Finnieston Crane in Glasgow, and the giant seaworthy Paper Boat, which was seen by millions on its voyage from Scotland to New York. Louise is delighted by the book. She said: “This is about an artistin-the making and offers an accurate account of my father’s life. It illustrates the influences that stimulated him into making and sharing accessible art.’ Jan added: “I hope the biography becomes text-book reading for all would-be artists.” Arrivals and Sailings: The Making of George Wyllie is published by Polygon priced £25.
