Modern Monotony by Heather L. Premo In this day, there isn’t a shortage of things to do in all actuality. In truth, if we think about it, there is so much to do that we should never be bored, ever. So why do we find ourselves feeling bored? Going through the same old, same old? My belief is that the use of electronic devices and advancements in technology have made things spoiled, in a matter of speaking. I don’t think that anything electronic will ever replace the need for basic positive human interaction. The kind of interaction that also includes getting to know yourself and being comfortable with who you are as a person. Watching the television constantly, I pods, cellphones, and laptops have made it easy for you to hide, not allowing yourself to face yourself and making a life of Modern Monotony. I have a fun cure for this ongoing issue. Not that I am not an expert of any kind, but I have had some experience in this area like most, and so I will share with you what has worked for me. Everyone loves music of some style, wouldn’t you agree? Jammin is what some of us do best at some point in time, anyway. One of the best cures for the common same old is to take an evening by yourself. Figure out something you might like to cook for dinner, if you cook. Make it something you have been meaning to try or just feel like making. You can make it a fine dining experience for yourself if you want, why not? Just before you start to do your cooking, crank up the oldies on your stereo. When was the last time you got funky? A great oldies station is 95.7. What? Did you actually think you had to be at a bar to jam? Prepare your meal while listening to some loud music you haven’t heard in a while. Have fun with yourself. Dance by yourself. I do it with pretty much anything that I do when I am alone now. I crank up the tunes, while cleaning the house, cooking, showering,

just about anything I do; and I do it all while dancing and singing and acting like a total fruitcake; all by myself. It’s a great way to relief stress, pass the time, get over painful circumstances, and get to know yourself. When was the last time you were outside, without your cellphone? When did you go and just hangout checking out the scenery anywhere? Another great way to help cure the monotony is going for a walk. I love to do this with a radio or without. I like to dance down the street sometimes. I check out the flowers, houses, people, dogs, different little things that are there every day, but never really pay too much attention to. Sometimes taking a step back and appreciate something to what normally may seem dumb, helps the soul. Yeh, dumb things can be appreciated too. While you are out, smile, wave, and say hello to someone outside doing whatever; or help someone out that may be need a little assistance. Just for the heck of it. Strike up a conversation with someone you meet and compliment them on their yard, their house, or that you noticed something different. Especially with the older generation. Sometimes I have come across someone working in their yard and they have lived there forever, and compliment them on the beautiful job they’ve done. You be surprised at some of the incredible stories that can be heard by someone sweet. You might even make a new friend. Rummage sales, antique stores, and old book stores can be so fantastic! I may be a weirdo, but I love the smell of old stuff. When was the last time that you bought an actual book? Not for a class, not on a Kindle or a manual, a fun old book! Even a children’s book, one that you remember reading when you were a child, buy it. Usually you can find them just

about anywhere, and for a cost that won’t even empty out the change in your pocket. Find the smelliest book possible and reminisce in something old and exquisite. Have you ever gone a road trip just for the pure amusement of getting away from everything the same and everyone who irritated you that day? I cannot be the only one that in one day it seems like every moron came crawling out of the woodwork just to step in my view, earshot, or hover over me just so I can grumble. So the solution to that; get the heck outta there! Even a bus trip to the next town or on the other side of town is sometimes easy and different and away. Once I am there, where-ever there may be, I decide that irritating people don’t exist. Then I wave to people, be overly polite, goofy, REALLY GOOFY! I can be so goofy that I make myself laugh to myself. Sometimes the expressions and reactions that you get from people you don’t know are truly priceless. No lie, sometimes the reactions are freaking hilarious, but warning; you might get the bird. Just smile anyway and move on. Some people just don’t know what to do about your goofy tail; some may just ignore you completely, and some will welcome your silliness and go right along with you. I have done this on road-trips when I am the passenger and in passing on the freeway, anyone on my right-hand side is in for it. Sometimes I even have made silly faces. Almost everyone has smiled and/ or laughed; especially when I press my face against the window and keep still while waving and passing on

by. On purpose stupidity is just so much fun in a safe manner of course and the best part is that you probably just made someone’s day. Lastly, do you remember a movie that you totally loved when you were a kid? Everyone has got to have at least one. I have a lot of them. I love Disney movies; they are the bomb man! Seriously, there are some movies that we saw when we were a kid that we laughed at hysterically, or a movie that touched our heart in some way, or a movie that just was so dang cute that you just want to hug it. Go to the movie store somewhere, anywhere. Buy it, rent it, whatever; then go get your favorite junk-food. Go home and lay out all the crap food and indulge in it while watching your totally fun and awesome childhood movie. Personally, I have to have at least one thing from every junk-food group. YES! There is a junk-food grouping; they just forgot to tell you. Chewy, chocolaty, salty, greasy, and ice-cream. Sometimes you can hit a couple of groups with one item; it helps the pocket-book. In all seriousness, if you really have an aversion to the junk-food for any various reason, understood. Then just go with what you like. That is what it is all about. Getting away from the same old, relaxing, saying the heck with the stuff that drove you nuts, and get to know yourself. You may be surprised at what you may find out about yourself and about the fantastic goodies out there. CN — Heather L. Premo

Preacher Gets Religion; Is Overcome by Tolerance By Tom Attea

THE REVEREND GREGORY GIRD, preacher at a thriving megachurch with 5,000 devoted members, caused quite a stir and lost 1,000 adherents when he gave a sermon in which he came right out and defended tolerance. There were early warning signs that he might advocate the now intolerable virtue. When asked repeatedly by members to announce that he was against all the things right-thinking people are supposed to abhor, such as gay divorce, abortion for recreational purposes, and Democrats in general, he repeatedly demurred. Apparently, he finally could no longer restrain himself from divulging his true thoughts. He preached, not only one, but six sermons in which he actually advocated the separation of church and state, cautioned members against the superimposition of their own guidelines on sexual inclinations, advised them to stop referring to America as a Christian nation, and encouraged them to make a place in their hearts for that radical document, The Bill Of Rights. Most calamitously of all, he dared to advise them that having Christ in their hearts meant they should love everybody, even people who don’t agree with them. While he himself is a conservative with much the same beliefs as his attendees, he still felt that the role of religious people is to conduct themselves with reliably religious principles, such as the controversial triumvirate of “Faith, hope, and charity,” instead of losing their laudable fellow-feeling in intolerant social advocacies. In his alarming sermon, he said that the role of Christians is not to attempt to gain “power over” others though politics but “winning people’s hearts” by sacrificing for those in need. He went so far as to say, “America wasn’t founded as a theocracy.” Even more upsetting to many in attendance, he went on to say that America was

actually founded by people trying to escape theocracies and there has never been a Christian theocracy that wasn’t bloody and barbaric. That’s why the Constitution wisely included separation of church and state. Many members of his congregation walked out right in the midst of his sermon, but afterward numerous others congratulated him for his Christ-like compassion for the much maligned and his courage to come out of the pulpit for his beliefs. One dissenter stated, “When we joined years ago, Greg was a conservative speaker. But we totally disagreed with him on this. You can’t be a Christian and ignore actions that you feel are wrong, like what other people think and do much too often.” On the other hand, a supporter stated, Minister Gird’s sermon “was liberating to me. Now I can have tea with my agnostic neighbor again.” Minister Gird remained convinced he had done the right thing, saying, “I don’t think there’s a particular angle Christians have on society that others lack. All good, decent people want good and order and justice. Just don’t slap the label ‘Christian’ on it.” Apparently, he came to realize that all generalization are, by definition, intolerant of individual rights and that the best answer is often a question, from Socrates right on down to now. He also seemed to be approaching the ethic that may be even more challenging than love, which is kindness, a virtue that is not quite so malleable to turns of convenience. CN

Bigots In The Republican Party SO WHY IS THERE SO MUCH MISUNderstanding, bitterness and confusion in the public dialog over politics? In my opinion, it stems from those who misunderstand what it means to be conservative. There are many prominent pundits (those who speak or write in an authoritative manner) who declare themselves to be conservative, but are in fact something else. Remember, by definition a conservative is someone who is inclined to maintain things as they are. It is not the opposite of being liberal at all. What word found in the dictionary is used in reference to someone who is “obstinately and unreasonably wedded to a particular religious creed, opinion or practice; a person blindly attached to any opinion, system or party, and bitterly intolerant of those who believe differently”? That is the definition of a “bigot”. Unfortunately, we have a number of bigots running loose in the public media. They label themselves as conservative, but that is not in fact what they are. I believe that the majority of people have conservative tendencies, but they are also liberal. All that means is, they have an inclination to maintain existing customs and institutions, but they are open-minded enough to listen to alternatives. The bigots among us have been declaring themselves conservative in an attempt to recruit that majority to be supportive of their agenda and they have perverted the public dialog. They loudly and brazenly declare that their opinions, beliefs and practices are superior in every way and in fact ordained and sanctioned by the creator of the universe. They even believe their genetic makeup is superior and that anyone not of their genetic heritage is less than human, or in the current vernacular “not a real American”. They aggressively advocate for change, but not “progressive” change, which implies forward moving change. The changes that they loudly proclaim must be made are changes that take us back to conditions that used to exist in the past, conditions that were not consistent with personal freedoms or a free market. They long to regain control of “our country”, where conditions

meant less than equal opportunities for women, ethnic minorities and those not born into economic advantage. Bigoted individuals have been around for as long as there has been a United States of America, and they have periodically managed to wield power when they confuse enough other citizens into believing their delusions of fear, paranoia and hatred. Currently, they are working under the banner of “conservatism”, the very mention of which tugs at the heart strings of most Americans, but it isn’t the ideals of The Constitution that they hope to conserve. Ideals such as “all men are create equal”, and “the pursuit of happiness”. We know, of course, the “men” refers to all mankind, not simply adult males. And we know that the right to pursue happiness does not mean the right to happiness through exploitation or abuse of fellow citizens. That is not the creator’s intent. The bigots will tell you that anyone who disagrees with them hates America, hates God and actively seeks to aid our enemies. They will tell you that they themselves serve God, love America and oppose our enemies. But their words ring hollow because they serve only their own selfish interests and are almost never found serving in the military that they claim to hold in great esteem and will do business with whoever shows them a profit, even our sworn enemies. They have always opposed government programs that provide some measure of security for the less fortunate, scorning them as lazy and parasitic. They will claim to ask “what would Jesus do?” when they should be asking what did Jesus do? The answer, of course, is he aided and loved the sick, the unfortunate and the outcasts of society, not judging and punishing them, but offering encouragement and hope. A good question to ask is, what would they do with Jesus were he alive today. Inasmuch as Jesus was a dramatic departure from the leaders of his day, they would no doubt treat him as they do those whom they portray as radical now. They would heap scorn and derision on him, arrest him, persecute him and likely murder him. CN — James Green

Public Authority: Do You Respect It? by Heather L. Premo

MANY POLICE OFFICERS ALONG with state and public officials don’t seem to get the respect that I believe that they deserve. I have seen most commonly when I am out doing my daily routine of running to the grocery store or applying for a job, I overheard some younger adults having a conversation about what they do not like about the police. Usually the conversation is accompanied by profanity and some type of disrespectful nuance to what they believe an officer of the law should be called. The comment usually being one of the 4 legged chubby variety. However, the younger generation is not the only people that have disrespect; people of all ages are disrespectful to authority and authority figures. My question is why? Why do people feel that police and other entities of authority are so terrible? Is it because they feel they can do what they want when they want? Then when you are caught committing a crime, you want to blame everyone else but yourself. I do believe this is one reason and a major one. Guess what people, if you foul up and get caught, how can you blame anyone but yourself? You knew it was wrong from the get-go when you said, “F—k the Police!” An expression I have heard a lot. I even saw it written on a gosh darn lamp post. I guess writing “God is great,” wasn’t on the agenda for that sharpie. So in short, take responsibility for your own stupidity. Another reason why I believe there is lack of respect for the fine police officers is many of the wee little ones are exposed to this sort of attitude every single day. If the parents, grandparents, cousins, and other family members are out running around

committing crimes and have the attitude that the police are a bunch of hogwash, the children are going to learn that same crappy attitude. It is funny to me though, when the statement of, “F—k the police,” was written on that lamp post, I bet that person didn’t think about the fact of who was going to be there saving their “sorry ass” if they had gotten shot, stabbed, or ran over by a car, maybe a drunk driver. Betcha when writing that or saying that, they don’t think about who is going to be holding their hand while bleeding to death on the pavement until EMTs gets there. Then police try to find evidence of who hurt you so they could put them in jail to face charges. I BET YOU DIDN’T THINK WHEN YOU MADE THE COMMENT, “F—K THE POLICE,” THAT THEY TOOK AN OATH TO PROTECT YOU EVEN IF YOU ARE SCREWING UP INCLUDING TAKING A BULLET TO PROTECT YOU!! I feel sorry for those of you who don’t respect authority. You are selling yourselves short. I realize that there are some shady cops; I know there are some bad ones. I know there are some that have an ego bigger than my backside, however, that being said, they are still a cop, and they can still handcuff you and throw you in the clink if you choose to be a horse’s ass. So wise up. If you feel you have been unfairly treated, there are better ways of dealing with it. Filing a complaint and going through the proper channels to handle it is the best way if you want results that are fair. Getting up in an officer’s face with the cussing and swearing is only going to get you a charge, but if you are really lucky, you get to look

Just a Reminder: police are human too. They deal with some terrible heartbreaking crimes each day. They have emotions, weaknesses, and strengths just like you and I. like a total numbnuts on camera. Maybe we will see you in the next “World’s Dumbest” episode. In truth, if you want to be pissed off about something, be pissed off at something in your life that you have the power to change and stop driving everyone crazy with your crap. If you have babies, you need to know that they learn what you learn and do what you do. Is it your wish for your children to grow up smart and have a better life than the one you have? Think about it. Stop making negative comments around your children about authority figures. Someday, they may need to rely on an officer to save them or to help them in some desperate way. It is unfortunate, but bad things happen to everyone, everywhere. If your child has a negative view or a misunderstood view of what a police officer can do for them, then how will they get through something traumatic? Some of you people really need to think before you speak. Unless you are a cop, have a family member who is one and gives you some sort of insight of what they do every day and what they have to deal with and how incredibly difficult being an officer truly is, DO NOT sit in judgment of something you know

nothing about. You may believe that they just sit around doing nothing, trust me, there are procedures, policies, and rules that they have to abide by for your protection and everyone involved when a crime is committed. So don’t think that you know. Most likely you do not know. They may not tell you some things for good reason unknown to yourself. There is a method to everything they do. Just a reminder as well to you know-it-all types, police are human too. They deal with some terrible heartbreaking crimes each day. They have emotions, weakness, and strengths just like you and I. So please have some more respect for them. I beg you! If the sh-t hittith the fanneth, you will want them on your side! For the police officers: One; you are so very welcome. Two; if you are doing something against the law or does not coincide with the ethics of the department, QUIT IT! If you wish to have respect from the public and wish for your job to be a bit smoother on scene, respect them by not being a jerkoff. Respect won’t come in a bottle at the dollar store, you have to give it. CN — Heather L. Premo

The Racine Black & White Series

what happened to the cruise inn? JULY 3, 2006 RACINE POLICE ARE called to an incident at the Cruise Inn Bar 1423 State St., Racine, WI. From the Police reports an ex-husband and his ex wife began to argue in the bar. The Ex husband took out a knife, box cutter or bottle cap, and used it to put a 4 inch laceration across his ex-wife’s throat (Not life-threatening). Jose and Maria Maldonado, the owners of the Cruise Inn were requested to appear in front of the City of Racine Public License and Safety Committee August 7, 2006. Prior to the meeting a Special License Premise Report was generated by the Racine Police Department and made available to the committee members. The report was critical of Maria Maldonado for not assisting the victim and having her exit the bar without assistance. A news article dated August 5, 2006 was printed in the daily paper explaining what happened the night of July 3, 2006 at the Cruise Inn 1423 State St.. At the August 7, 2006 Public License Safety meeting, Richard Anderson stated he witnessed the victim going outside and holding her throat. He was asked by the patrons to call the police and he stated he did, and he even gave his name to the dispatcher. Alderman Helding motioned the matter to a due process hearing. Alderman Shakoor, Alderman Helding , Alderman Hermes and Alderman Kaplan voted in favor. On August 15, 2006 the Racine Common Council voted unanimously to take the Cruise Inn to a due process hearing for revocation of their liquor license.

CRUISE INN Continued From Page 6

On December 6, 2006 the hearing for the revocation of the liquor license was to be held. On December 5, 2006 one day earlier Jose and Maria Maldonado listed their property for sale at $225,000 with Image Reality. On December 8, 2006 Alderman David Maack the Chairman of the Public Safety and Licensing Committee said, “the city avoided the hearing and accepted the bar owners offer.” On December 23, 2006 the Racine City Council, in a special Thursday night session, enters into an agreement to purchase 1423 State St.(Cruise Inn bar) and 1402 Liberty St. (Adjacent Lot) for a combined purchase price of $260,000. On January 3, 2007, Director of City Development Brian O’Connell addresses the Redevelopment Authority of the City of Racine, explained the properties and asked the Redevelopment Authority to acquire the properties under Wisconsin statutes 66. 1333(5). The motion passed on January 12, 2007 the City of Racine Redevelopment Authority purchased 1423 State St.(Cruise Inn bar) and 1402 Liberty St.(Adjacent Lot) for $260,000. As we begin to break down the actions of the City of Racine and the actions of the Racine Redevelopment Authority, we must first explain the two parcels of property. The Cruise Inn Bar(1423 State St.) was Racine’s first “Post Office,” built in 1906. In a news article dated February 2, 2007 after the purchase of the properties by the Redevelopment Authority, historian Keith Kohlmann stated “before a reliable system of intercity roads were built, nearly all mail in the US was moved by train”. “This office was located in a prime spot next to the train station to conveniently handle most of Racine’s mail.” The second parcel the Redevelopment Authority purchased was 1402 Liberty St. This parcel was to the rear of the Cruise Inn Bar and consisted of the West

COMMUNICATOR NEWS platform and canopy of the current train station including the baggage building. Richard Ammann, archivist at the Racine Heritage Museum called the Racine Train Depot a “landmark station”. In 2006 the area around the Maldonado’s property was being developed with a new Walgreens to the west of their property, a new shopping center across the street, and a new transit center directly to their East. During this time there was much anticipation for a commuter rail to connect Milwaukee to Chicago with a stop at the State Street Station in Racine. The Maldonado’s two parcels of property was prime real estate. Before the July 3, 2006 incident where the Public License and Safety Committee took the Maldonado’s to a due process hearing to revoke their liquor license, the bar had very few incidents per the City of Racine Police Reports. One of the more interesting aspects of the process was the Special License Premise Report that was generated for the Public License and Safety Committee. The report states “The victim personally knows there are more instances where the bar owner has pushed other crime victims out of the bar without getting assistance for them .” And the investigator believed Maria was not fully cooperative with the investigation, and felt Maria was very guarded in her answers. The daily paper wrote an article on August 5th 2006 about the incident that happened July 3rd 2006,

a month after it happened but two days before the Public License Safety meeting. At the meeting Richard Anderson stated he called the police and stated he gave his name to the dispatcher. Was his statement ever verified? Were the claims on the License Premise Report ever substantiated? Was the history of police calls to the bar ever take into account? Was there ever a “side agreement” ever offered to the Maldonado’s? Was a motion to temporarily defer to examine the evidence ever considered? Who was aware of the significance of the Maldonado’s property? Was the daily paper contacted to write a story a month after the incident happened? Why were the safeguards Racine Redevelopment Authority given by the state statute not used? During the time after the call for due process (August 2006 )by Alderman Helding, and before the selling of their property to the City of Racine Redevelopment Authority(December 2006), the Mayor of Racine Gary Becker, and other City officials would walk and visit the property numerous times. Jose Maldonado stated” the Mayor would tell me to sell my property to the city because my license is going to be taken away and the property will be worthless.” “He also called me on my cell phone telling me my wife was in trouble.” “I started to get many fines from the city about my weeds and paint no matter what I did I kept getting fines.” “People from the city who spoke

7 Spanish would come to the bar and talk to my wife in Spanish and tell her she’s in deep trouble.” The Maldonado’s son Fabian stated, “My mom didn’t want to come out of the house anymore. She was afraid. My dad was driving truck and my brother and I were too young to bartend, so my dad finally gave up.” Wisconsin statute 66 – 1333 referring to the redevelopment authority places specific guidelines on how to acquire a property in a redevelopment zone. Some of the guidelines include the purchasing of property, relocation of business and tenants. Richard Anderson who lived in an apartment above the Cruise Inn stated, “The City just told us to leave, I had like a week to get out, and I didn’t have any place to go.” Jose Maldonado stated, “They wanted us out real fast, I could not take any of the bar or restaurant equipment, nothing, not even the liquor.” Since the sale of the property to the City of Racine, the west side of the train station platform and baggage building have been completely renovated. The bar ‘s exterior has been painted and windows have been screened. Looking through the windows of the bar the interior is the same as the day the Maldonado’s sold the property. The kitchen equipment, pool table and bar stools all neatly lined up .”The only thing missing is the liquor.” The City people took that” said Maldonado. CN

What Hapened To City Hall Lounge In 2006? OCTOBER 4, 2006 21 PEOPLE WERE arrested for underage drinking at 835 Washington Ave., Racine, WI. Captain Carl Pavilonis of the Racine Police Department stated “Officers found a 9 mm handgun in the trash can in the men’s bathroom, another 9 mm handgun in the speaker in the bar area and a 22 caliber pistol found behind a video game, all were loaded.” Lenny Hand, the owner of City Hall Lounge attributes the problem to inadequate door security. Alderman Helding stated, “This is ridiculous, the fact is 21 of his customers were underage.” On October 23, 2006 Hand appeared before the Public Safety and Licensing Committee. At the meeting he apologized to the committee and the police department and stated it will never happen again. Ald. Helding made a motion to refer to a due process hearing. Alderman Maack requested a five-minute recess. Upon returning, Alderman Helbing withdrew his motion for due process and deferred the item to the next meeting so the City Attorney and the license holder (Hand) could make an agreement. November 13, 2006 a proposed agreement which was submitted to Attorney Weber stating

“Officers found a 9 mm handgun in the trash can in the men’s bathroom, another 9 mm handgun in the speaker in the bar area and a 22 caliber pistol found behind a video game, all were loaded.”

he would be giving $1000 to United Way. Alderman Kaplan suggested the matter be deferred for two weeks where parties could meet and try to bring an agreement closer together. Alderman Shakoor made a motion for due process hearing, the motion passed, Alderman Shakoor, Helding, Hermes and Kaplan voted in favor of the motion. The due process complaint against City Hall Lounge alleges a disorderly or riotous, improper house, neighborhood problems, firearms, and 21 underage drinking citations. An incident on March 2, 2006

was also added to the complaint, a gun was found in the tavern and later was discharged in the parking lot. Alderman Helding stated “The hearing will bring all the facts to light while protecting Mr. Hand’s rights.” January 31, 2007 a due process hearing was held. A “settlement” was reached and recommended to the Public Safety and Licensing committee for approval. The settlement approval was given on February 12, 2007 by the Public Safety and Licensing Committee. The Racine Common Coun-

cil approved the final settlement February 21 of 2007. Sources say the settlement consisted of $1,000 to a local charity, and closing every Thursday for 14 weeks. [The local paper stated in November of 2006 the Public Safety and Licensing Committee must set a date for due process hearings for Shockers Club on Douglas Ave, Cruise Inn on State Street and 262 Lounge on Mead Street. THE QUESTION OFTEN COMES UP, why don’t we have a third-party in the race for president? The real question is, why don’t we have a second party running for president? The two-party system has evolved into the same party; greed, war, abuse of civil liberties. Both parties support the TSA, the Patriot Act, the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), the constant state of military intervention around the world. Drone attacks in Yemen, Pakistan and Afghanistan hailed by both parties as advancements in war technology. George Bush started the drone attacks shortly after 9/11, and President Obama has intensified the attacks during his presidency.

The Republican Party The Republican Party in the 1960s was the party of non-intervention in world affairs, troop withdrawal in the Vietnam War, fiscal conservatism, right to life. Today the Republican Party cannot find any part of war they find distasteful, or the intervention into countries to spread democracy at the end of a gun barrel. Taking out old propped up dictators who no longer support the corporate takeover of their country and installing new propped up dictators who bow to the friends and crony capitalists of the United States Government. The Republican platform on right to life, may be the only difference between the Republicans and the Democrats, only so far as pre-born.
